Oh, it hadn't quite dawned on her how much she missed people cowering in fear at just the sight of her, and it warmed something in her cold heart as she watched this young man shudder before her. A brow flicking briefly upward at his stutter was the only outward appearance of her amusement, satisfaction at his almost painful pressing into the table at his side hinted at as well as she stepped past him. "As you should be." The words were spoken not with any sort of hardness, just the sort of tonal flatness that one spoke facts with.
Hitting the little bell on the counter with such a sharp tap that the tone of it's ring lingered in the quiet space around them, followed by an impatient second tap before she turned back to her present company. "A piece of advice from me to you... don't neglect small pleasures. You never know when you won't have the chance again." Work, hm? Whispers around were that one of the new men was a scientist, and if this was him, what could his work be? Interesting, and maybe information that would be not only useful... but valuable.
"Work, hm?" Despite her commanding exterior, a slightly more easy going expression slipped over her mask, not enough to be a jarring change but something more subtle. "Work hm? Must be important to be still working on it with everything going on..." Pausing to greet Charlie who appeared from the back, she asked for a coffee and then returned her attention to her target, leaning on the counter as she waited. "Still best to keep your wits about your surroundings. From what I've heard, things can go bad fast around here."
he blinks wide brown eyes up at her almost dubiously , mouth forming a small ‘o’ ; for a moment , sev looks far more like a quivering rabbit frozen at the mercy of a particularly cunning fox , one that seemed to have no particular qualm with toying with its prey before sinking its fangs in , than a boy interrupted. something about this woman is both startlingly imposing and particularly commanding ; sev’s seen people like her before , the kind of person who could wield authority like a weapon. “ a-ah , right … “ he curses himself for the awkward stutter that catches on his words , brows pinching together and his lips wobbling into a small frown. he stares down into his coffee , watching the ripple working its way through the surface of the deep , brown liquid ; maybe if he keeps his head bowed she won’t scruff him by the neck and toss him to the crawlers.
“ i wasn’t trying to be in your way , sorry …” he scoots his thin frame to the side in hopes of giving this stranger the leeway to fetch her own mug of coffee , his own hands curling a bit more protectively around his cup. sev holds it closer to his chest , allowing the warmth of his beverage to leach through his sweater and into the skin of his chest. it’s enough to keep him grounded , enough to give him just enough confidence to lift his head enough to peer up at the woman. sev chews the inside of his cheek in thought , head tilting ever so slightly to the side. “ the coffee is pretty good , yeah , “ he agrees meekly. “ though , i guess if i’m being honest , i was barely even thinking about how it tastes … “ he looks almost sheepish as he totes the mug into one hand , his free one now lifting to rub at the back of his neck. “ i needed a little caffeine boost to get through some of the work i have left to do … “

CLOSED ft. @biohqzards | #901 , their penthouse | early december , late in the night
dark hues swept of the open shared space of their new apartment , giving a healthy once over to approve all of the cleaning that he'd been doing over the last several days. it hadn't been filthy by any means , but the dust that builds up in an unoccupied space is something no one can help , & he'd been a little fuckin' manic about making the space meet his standard of livable. though , sev hadn't seemed to give one damn. had set up his suitcase laptop & all his science shit all over what was meant to be a dining room table without a care for any mess or balled up pieces of trash that might have found their way onto it's surface. kang wasn't bothered by it , it's not like the'd be sitting to have a proper meal any time in the forseeable future , so what did he care ? as long as yeon was able to do his thing , he was content. he crossed the room to sit in one of the two chairs by the table , freshly scrubbed down & no longer slightly sticky against his the skin that stuck out of the muscle shirt he wore. his tone was curious , blonde locks shifting as he tilted his head at the numbers on the screen , " what ya workin' on ? i know when we left camp you were still tryin' ta... " he pauses , trying to remember the gargin , " isolate ? some parts of the virus sequence ? did ya finish that or nah ? " he didn't really understand it , & didn't to pretend to - but he at least tried to show that he'd been listening. their new relationship was tense at best , & awkward when neither of them could figure out what to say. a lifetime of memories put to the side while they navigated whatever... this thing that they were all but forced into was. kang tried to sigh in that moment , & instead just put his energy into looking interested , showing sev that he was engaged & ready for him to info dump his science shit onto his military grunt built brain.

👄 + Sev
@biohqzards
"I don't know Sev that well yet, we only talked once. But if everything I've learned is true, then I believe there is hope for us all, and I'm not just talking about research. There are many smart people out there but the optimism and kindness I sensed when I talked to Sev... Now that's something you can't fake or learn. That's the true strength."

Though the diner was open twenty four hours these days, most of which Charlie found herself spending here, she still took a few hours to sleep when the diner was watched by a night owl volunteer. But, after so many years of the same routine, her body woke itself at four am nearly on the dot as it did every day. With a shower both brief and cold, she'd pulled on her uniform and prepared for her day in a manner starkly similar now as it had been before the world outside the building had fallen apart. Standing there, staring at herself in the mirror as she fixed her hair into a simple twist and fastened it in place with a large clip, it stuck once more just how absurdly little the change in the cities circumstances had affected her daily routine. That only brought flashes of those moments when reality had forced it's way in, and in the end she'd pushed it all away as she was so practiced at doing and just... continued with her day.
Last years large warm yellow travel mug with it's silicone lid and matching reusable straw, held in one hand, and her fluffy matching sweater over her uniform made it feel like any other day. Until it wasn't. There, standing in the middle of her second home was a new face, and considering the hub that the place had become, being out of the loop caught her off guard. Jumping when he did, just as surprised as he found him, she offered him a smile both apologetic and relieved. "Oh no it's okay. I'm Charlie, I work here." Setting down her bag and her mug, she reached over to yank some napkins from the holder to bring over in an attempt to help blot away any coffee before it stained. "I'm so sorry I scared you. To be honest, you gave me a little jump scare of my own, are you sure you're alright. That looked hot."

the diner is quiet , only the subtle hum of the lights running overhead on the back-up generator’s power filling the sill air ; witching hours always held a fragile beauty to them despite the fact that so few sane humans willingly chose to stay awake through them – and though sev’s running on three hours of sleep ( if he’s being generous ) , he finds himself puttering about the empty diner with his hands cupping a large mug of piping-hot coffee. the oversized-sleeves of his sweaters cover his hands , providing him his palms with an extra layer of protection from the scalding heat leaching through the porcelain of his mug. he sighs , raising it to his lips before quietly nestling himself into one of the booths towards the back , head bowed and the rim of his cup resting at his lower lip. he takes a slow sip , savoring the bitter flavor as it settles over his tongue. the instant coffee he had managed to scrounge from the wexley wasn’t necessarily good by any means – but desperate times called for desperate measures. he’s lost in his thoughts , brows pinched and lips twisted into a wobbly frown , as he slowly nurses the watery , overly-caffeinated beverage. sev mumbles under his breath , a string of non-cohesive figures and disjointed musings , when the sensation of a hand tapping at his shoulder forces him to jolt. he exhales an undignified sound caught somewhere between a yelp and a squeak , hands shaking enough that some of the coffee in his mug sloshes past the rip. he winces , the hot liquid seeping through his sweater-paws and burning the skin on his spindly fingers – but he pays no mind , gingerly setting the cup onto the table with a sour expression. “ ack – sorry , i didn’t hear you … i didn’t realize anyone else was awake at this hour ! "

After gladly sleeping her quarantine time away, Sada was finally making her way down to the diner for a fresh cup of hot coffee, not even having a pot in her own suite as she'd never made her own. Before it was for lack of resources, but over time it was from a lack of need. The best coffee in the city was served right there in The Wexley, a point of pride for her, though she had nothing do with it but living there. The long trek down to The Atrium from the tenth floor was welcome, letting her stretch long shapely legs as her brain kicked fully on and she could mull over the little catch up report one of her paid 'spies' had slipped beneath her door after learning of her return. It was good to see that some people were still holding onto the value of money. Seemed hope in the world returning to as it once was held strong in some people. Probably the Rose girl, for sure.
Pausing at the entrance to the lobby when she spotted an unfamiliar face that could only be one of their newest arrivals, Sada studied him for a moment as he made his way around the space. Realizing he was lost in his own Beautiful Mind world of mumbling to himself, she made her way over to gentle tap at his shoulder, her amusement at his reaction hidden by a well placed and maintained mask of unaffected boredom. "It's fine. I'm sure these days people don't care much about time of day." Besides to come to the diner for the scheduled rationed meals three times a day. "I was trying to say that you're blocking the path to the counter. Unlike yourself, I'm not quite fortunate enough to have a cup of coffee in my hand. You, though, found the good luck of finding shelter where there's not only coffee, but easily the best coffee in New York even more it fell."
