♢ history: Dominik Carstens was the firstborn son of Eric and Mary Carstens, a preacher and a housewife with old money. They were conservative and very Christian, and he was never exactly a model son. From the time he was a child, he could see ghosts. His best friend when he was four years old was the dead girl who'd been murdered in the woods behind their home, and his parents went rapidly from finding his imaginary friends "charming and creative" to worrying their son was delusional and possibly dangerous. What started with therapy and medication ended in a short bout of institutionalization, until he finally realized he should stop talking about them. He pretends he doesn't even remember that part of his life, and he never spoke about them again.

But they didn't go away, and neither did the memory of how, when his parents were supposed to be listening to and helping him, they'd tried to send him away and cover it up. It led to all manner of acting out as he grew up, from drinking and dabbling in drugs to sleeping with people twice his age and wrecking the family car. His younger sister, Emma, was the only bright spot. She was two years younger, and even though they bickered like siblings, there was no one he was more loyal to. He chose MIT for college, in part to maintain the distance between him and his parents and in part to stay near Emma. He'd always been a tinkerer, taking things apart and putting them back together, and mechanical engineering felt like a calling.

After graduation, Emma wanted to travel overseas with some friends, and Dom fought hard with their parents to make it happen. He had a summer internship and couldn't join her, but she was eighteen. It was old enough to start living her own life, and he knew how much she wanted out from under their parents' thumbs. Except she didn't come home. Working with the U.S. Embassy and local authorities was a nightmare, and the case gradually went cold. He was barely on speaking terms with his parents at that point, and he blew off his last year of college and used the tuition money to hire a private investigator while he traveled and did his own digging, seeking out the living and the dead alike for any clues to her whereabouts. He's convinced that if she was dead, her spirit would have found him by now, and he can't bring himself to give up. He would find her, or he would die trying.
