Up-Close & Personal is a signal contribution to understanding that drawn-out conflict from a soldier's point of view, informed by knowledge gained from being "up-close" at the basic, ground-pounding or river-patrolling combat level. The author pulls no punches. Detail is uncompromising, hard, often excruciating. All this amid the tumult of politicized youth on the home front shouting "Make love not War" and "Tune in drop out.
Review: I tend not to give 5 stars to books, as I like to reserve that for books that have a profound effect on me. This book qualifies and let me explain why. It's not a perfect book by any means. There are little errors here and there with spelling and such, plus the story isn't that captivating/page turning thrilling. It can even be a slog at times. So why 5 stars? Because Bogison does what few others can - he really conveys the emotional aspect of his thoughts, his feelings, his mental state, his wrestling with what to do, how to do it, what is right and what is wrong... in big decisions and small. He doesn't just tell the good, but also the bad, he explains the stuff he wrestles with and not everything gets wrapped up nice and clean and with a little bow. When I grabbed this book, I was expecting a story about a Military Police in Vietnam. I was expecting a lot of bar fights, investigations of murder and accidents, regular law enforcement stuff. By the title, I also expected discussion of the Chieu Hoi Program/Force 66 - Luc Luong 66. - Let me be clear, this book has 0 of that... none.. nada... zip zilch... NO. Instead it's a book about an MP who is assigned to correctional facilities in the US (Ft. Riley) and Vietnam (LBJ) and ends up in a very special unit of MP's that is called an Ambush and Recon unit made up of MP's instead of infantryman! Because of the location in the Delta, they also have a joint unit with PBR's and skimmers that he finds himself leading as well. It was fascinating to read, the people, the stories, the bureaucracy, and more was captivating and it left me really thinking about the choices he made and how his personality affected his life's course. His temperament is always to attack, to challenge, to push - even against those who are trying to help him. He either sits quietly or attacks ferociously even when confronted with cooler heads to learn from and imitate - he does neither. Whether it was the helicopter crash, the tug boat incident, or a handful of other stories included, one can't help but really feel what the author felt as he just did his best, and all too often memoirs like this one are more about snippets of stories, or tell you what happened but forget the human element. This one has a consistent narrative and does well to really put you in his boots, and look through his eyes.

Here’s a guide to some of the best experiences you won’t want to miss.
Explore the Bustling Streets of Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, is a bustling metropolis that combines the old and the new. Begin your journey at the iconic Ben Thanh Market, where you can immerse yourself in local culture and shop for souvenirs. Don’t forget to try some street food; the pho and banh mi are must-tries!
For history enthusiasts, a visit to the War Remnants Museum offers a poignant look at Vietnam’s turbulent past. Afterward, unwind at the picturesque Saigon River, where you can take a leisurely boat cruise and enjoy the city skyline.
Discover the Timeless Beauty of Hanoi
The capital city of Hanoi is a blend of French colonial architecture and Vietnamese traditions. Stroll through the Old Quarter, where narrow streets are lined with shops selling handicrafts and delicious street food. The Hoan Kiem Lake is a serene escape in the city, perfect for a relaxing walk or a photo op.
Be sure to visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the One Pillar Pagoda, which are steeped in history and cultural significance. If time permits, consider a day trip to Ninh Binh, often referred to as “Ha Long Bay on land,” where you can take a boat ride through stunning limestone landscapes.
Experience the Natural Wonders of Ha Long Bay
One of the top things to do in Vietnam is visiting Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its emerald waters and thousands of towering limestone islands topped with rainforests. A cruise in Ha Long Bay is an unforgettable experience, allowing you to explore hidden caves and floating fishing villages. Many tour companies offer overnight cruises, providing the chance to kayak, swim, and enjoy fresh seafood while taking in the breathtaking scenery.
Venture into the Central Highlands
For those looking to escape the hustle and bustle, the Central Highlands of Vietnam offer tranquil landscapes and indigenous cultures. The town of Da Lat is known for its cool climate, beautiful gardens, and stunning waterfalls. Don’t miss a visit to the Crazy House, a whimsical architectural wonder that is a favorite among tourists.
The region is also home to the Coffee Plantations, where you can learn about Vietnam’s coffee production and enjoy a cup of the famous Vietnamese iced coffee.
Unwind on the Beaches of Da Nang and Hoi An
The coastal cities of Da Nang and Hoi An are among the best places for relaxation and exploration. My Khe Beach in Da Nang is perfect for sunbathing and water sports. Just a short drive away is Hoi An, a charming town known for its well-preserved Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Here, you can take a cooking class, where you’ll learn how to make traditional Vietnamese dishes, or rent a bicycle to explore the surrounding rice paddies and rural villages. The evening lantern festival in Hoi An is a magical experience, illuminating the streets with colorful lights.
Visit the Historic Sites of Hue
Hue, the former imperial capital of Vietnam, is rich in history and culture. The Imperial City, a vast complex with palaces and temples, is a must-visit. Take a leisurely boat ride on the Perfume River to see the ancient Thien Mu Pagoda and the royal tombs of the Nguyen Dynasty.
Engage with Local Culture
One of the most enriching things to do in Vietnam is engaging with the local culture. Around The Northwest 6 Days
Remote and mountainous Son La province stretches along Vietnam's south-western border with Laos and is bisected by the Song Da river which flows down through the province eventually emptying into the large reservoir in Hoa Binh province. Characterised by a rugged, yet breathtaking, mountainous landscape, the steep slopes of Son La's valleys are layered in hundreds of stepped rice terraces, while the lush valley bases are home to small and often very isolated farming villages. With a substantial population of minority groups, you'll not need to look far to find people living a very traditional lifestyle well away from the hustle and bustle of Vietnam's larger, more urbanised centres. For the vast majority of visitors, Son La is but a series of slow vistas taken out of a minibus window as they make their long winding trip from Hanoi to Dien Bien Phuand while the same-named provincial capital holds little of touristic value, it's a classic the pleasure is all in the getting there type destination. There are far less spectacular provinces in which to lose a day or two than Son La, and, if you're travelling under their own steam, particularly by motorbike, Son La holds terrific potential with ample side-roads and off-the-main-road villages and valleys you can explore.

How Can Investors Seize Vietnam’s Wind Power Potential? - PC1 EPC
The region has a coastline and islands with a length of about 700 km and a marine exclusive economic zone of up to 360,000 km2. For example, Soc Trang province holds great potential for wind power development with a long coastline of 72 km and constant strong winds. To date, the government has approved 20 wind power projects to be installed in Soc Trang in 2022 and 2023. Most recently, Orsted, one of the largest offshore wind farm companies, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop several offshore wind projects in Binh Thuan and Ninh Thuan provinces. In 2021, in Ninh Thuan, Vietnam’s largest wind power plant, spanning 900 hectares with a total capacity of 151.95 MW and total capital investment of US$173.4 million (VND 4 trillion), began operation. This adds to the province’s leading position with 32 solar power projects with a total capacity of 2,257 MW, and three wind power projects with an a - shj4wveovt

The last list of wild boar subspecies. As I mentioned in previous post, this is a large subspecies with 16 validated. Although, there are some debates since some other studies recognise up to 32 subspecies.
Ussuri boar, Korean Boar, Amur Boar, Manchurian Boar It is the largest subspecies of all. Can be found in Eastern China, Ussuri and Amur bay.
Formosan Wild boar, Taiwan Wild Boar When winter comes the Formosan wild boar migrates into lower elevetaion areas. They don’t posses sweat glands therefore roll themselves into muddy wetlands to keep them cool and get rid of parasites. It’s population remain stable.
Trans-Baikal boar, Siberian Wild Boar Can be found in the Lake Baikal region, Transbaikalia, northern and northeastern Mongolia.
Ryukyu boar Can be found in the Ryukyu Islands, in Japan.
Northern Chinese boar, Chinese boar It’s have been found significant variations within this subspecies, which make possible that there are actually four subspecies involved:
- North Vietnamese wild pigs are raised in Ba Vi , Hanoi - Phu Yen boar is raised at the rare animal farm in Hoa Khanh and Khanh Hoa - Cat Tien boars are raised on farms in Can Giuoc , Long An and Dong Nai - Binh Phuoc wild boar in the Southeast region
Banded Pig, Indonesian Wild Boar It is the most basal subspecies having the smallest relative brain size, more primitive dentition, and unspecialised cranial structure.Recently, in the context of the taxonomic revision of the Sus scrofa species , some scholars have questioned its alleged close relationship with the wild boar, to the point of considering its classification as a separate species within the genus Sus ( Sus vittatus ) more correct.
Japanese Boar, White-moustached Pig, Inoshishi, Yama Kujira In Japanese culture it is widely seen as a fearsome and reckless animal. Several words in Japanese referring to recklessness include references to boars. Among hunters in Japan, the boar is a source of admiration, and rural people commonly name their sons after the animal.

Top 10 beautiful of flowerhorn fish King kamfa in the world
Review 10 beautiful of flowerhorn fish King kamfa in the world
Although it is the next generation of red snapper, the sea bass soon received the attention and love of many players because of its unique humpback head and profound spiritual value. The following collection of the world's most beautiful sea buckthorn will be the most comprehensive picture to help you better understand the features and how to distinguish between species. Collection of the world's most beautiful sea bass 1 Fish drought is one of the beautiful fish and brings good luck to the homeowner
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish
The most beautiful drought in the world
1. Diamond fish In the family of fish, the diamond is also known as Phuc Loc Tho Diamond Arowana by famous artist Huynh An in the village. Vietnamese aquarium fish were successfully bred with the combination of the parent fish, Chau Kim Cuong and the mother fish, the Blue Dragon. Therefore, this breed almost has inherited what a sea buckthorn should have. This is considered the most beautiful sea buckthorn in Vietnam today.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquarium
The outstanding feature of the diamond la drought is its round body, impressive strength, the words running from the gill to the bottom of the tail clearly on the blue background. The swollen head held forward, adorned with tilde-shaped rows, seemed to provoke opponents. Spotted and tilde-shaped pearls are drawn down to the cheeks, fins, necks and breasts. The fish's eyes are red, the cheeks turn yellow.
Collection of the world's most beautiful sea buckthorn 2 Phuc Loc Tho diamond is a fish that is bred in Viet Nam
2. Fish drought Flowerhorn fish has the English name Flowerhorn. They were mixed between large cichlids but mainly the 3-dot cichlid - Trimac. This fish appeared in the years 1994-1997 in Malaysia and then gradually spread to other countries. The early arowanas stood out with two main features, the head and the "flower" (which in us is called "word"). Arowana has very little or almost no baubles, the large bulging heads are still quite rare, most of the fish are usually bone shaped, only slightly stretched. They have a red belly, red and convex eyes, lower lip protruding, dorsal and anal fins pointing away from the tail, a rounded or oblong tail, and relatively small compared to the body, when old fish the tail often collapses.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flowerhorn_cichlid
3. King kamfa fish King kamfa, also known as Kim Hoa, was bred mainly in Thailand and has overcome the disadvantages such as pouty lips, pouty tail, and their face looks more aggressive. A more special feature is that the pearls on King kamfa have the form of large, sticky fibers called baubles. The full body pearls are extremely rare five-color kamfa.
King kamfa's head rate is very low and all males are infertile. The King kamfa lines in Vietnam are often crossed by the male La Han with the female King kamfa, then select the individuals with the most characteristics of King kamfa to be crossed or crossed with the mother. However, the rate of malformations is quite high due to the same bloodline so many people breed them with different King kamfa females.
Collection of the world's most beautiful sea bass species 4 King kamfa is a very popular fish today
4. Pearl drought Pearl Pearl Flowerhorn "Pearl Flowerhorn" is the English name. This line of fish still maintains the characteristics of the early arowana but has many iridescent scales of green, blue or silver covering the body. This is the most popular strain to this day. Pearl Dermatology Pearl also has many names on the market but basically can be classified into two categories based on the main color background: green background and red background. Besides, fish can also be classified into different types of continents including pearl ball and string string. The ones that spread up to the top are called "head wrap".
Collection of the world's most beautiful sea buckthorn 5 The Pearl Dermatology is similar to the original, but has more scales
5. Yellow sea fish The Yellow Scallop is also known as the Golden based. Hoàng Kims are full-bodied mules. The pigment defect or "peeling" gene that always exists in purebred cichlids is thought to be the "material" for breeding the drought. The peeling gene is a recessive gene, it controls the formation of melanin (black) and iridophore (iridescent or "pearl") pigments, the corresponding skin color ranges from red, orange, yellow to white.
Hoang Kim is the first peeling la Han, usually with a yellow body and a red belly. All lineages such as Pearl, Kamalau or kamfa have the potential to molt if the parents both carry this recessive gene. The stripped lines later look slightly different from Hoang Kim with patches of white flower filaments on a red, orange or yellow background, so they are collectively referred to as "golden based". According to general tastes, Hoang Kim and the "golden background" are underestimated than the La Han often because of the lack of "Chau" - an important factor for Arhat.
Goldfish with a brilliant golden color on the body
6. Fish drought Tuyet Dieu, Bach Ngoc Tuyet Dieu or Bach Ngoc is the name of the white whole body or albino type Arhat. When the pigment defect gene controls the formation of all pigments, the color we see is the whiteness of the dermis, and if the phenomenon spreads throughout the body, the fish becomes pure white. In fact, fish with a white body color is very rare; usually the tip of the fin or the head is still slightly colored. Although in theory it is possible, but no one breeds the white arhat because like Hoang Kim, the White Arhat does not have a "continent".
White jade ambergris is a rare species of albino drought
7. Flame phoenix fish The fire phoenix has the English name "Fiery / Fire Phoenix" or "Red Phoenix". From this name shows that this strain has a red body. In fact, the Fire Phoenix is the full-body red kamfa and the red color will be very stable, not unstable like the Super red. Information about this fish is very limited, possibly due to the difficulty of breeding red full-bodied kamfa.
8. Kim Binh Fruit la drought This is considered the most unique fish in the sea bass family. They have the English name "golden apple". Kim Binh Qua was born by Ah Soon and Ah Wee bred and traded at A1 Aquarium Company. This fish line won first prize in the monochromatic arhat category at Aquarama 2003, Singapore. As the name suggests, the fish has an apple-like rounded appearance, short body, ultra-wide version, iridescent green-yellow color and deep eyes. While not a common species, they look very impressive.
Collection of the world's most beautiful sea bass species 9 Kim Binh Qua fish with a cute round body
9. Kim Ma Luu fish drought Kim Ma Luu is also known as kamalau or golden monkey (golden monkey). Kamalau originates from the first line of sea bass with a pale background like gray and emerald green, not from Pearl. The Mermaid Company that bred this line also bred the kamfa at the same time, so the fins and pearls of the kamalau were greatly improved and almost identical to the kamfa. The body is also wide and the mouth is less plump than it is. Kamalau has almost no "word" on its head and body.
Collection of the world's most beautiful sea buckthorn 10 Kim Ma Luu fish with a broad body and less pouty lips than the common drought
10. Red Shock (RS), Super Red (SR), Super Red Synspilus (SRS), Red Monkey (RM) These are the generations of pure red aquarium fish , fully exploited the gene stripped by a Thai breed. Although the name is Super Red Synsphilus (SRS), the "red" fish is often long-hit, narrow (unlike kamfa also crosses from Synspilus but has a wide version), low head rate and extremely flexible. Although referred to as red fish, their true color is pink and only red when in an excited state. Females have a more stable color than males. To maintain a permanent red color, the fish should be given a feed containing a Carophyll dye.
Collection of the world's most beautiful sea bass species 11 Drought-borne fish are mainly bred by Thai people
The world of the world's most beautiful Arowanas is not only a handbook on the history of the drought, but also helps you to choose the species you like and most suitable for. If you still find it difficult, come to Phuc Long aquarium - the official representative of AZOO in Vietnam as soon as possible!

The Flow of Korean FDI into The Central Region and Highlands of Vietnam
According to the Foreign Investment Agency (Ministry of Planning and Investment), nearly 4.4 billion USD has been invested by Korean businesses in the Central Region and Highlands so far.
In mid-December 2020, LG Electronics (Korea) put LG VS Research Center into operation at DITP building – Trung Nam Land (Da Nang). This is the third center in Vietnam that LG has established, after the centers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Law Firm in Vietnam
According to Vice Chairman of Da Nang City People’s Committee, recently, the city has received the attention of Korean businesses and investors. The most recent is the ICT Vina II medical equipment factory project of ICT Vina Company in Da Nang Hi-Tech Park, with a total investment of 60 million USD. This is one of the typical foreign direct investment (FDI) projects of Korean investors in the Central Region – Highlands of Vietnam.
According to the director of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (Kotra) in Da Nang, in previous years, Korean businesses were interested in investing in the tourism sector in Da Nang, but in recent years, they pay much attention to the field of processing, manufacturing and outsourcing technology.
In Da Nang, as of November 2020, Korea is the foreign investor with the most number of projects, with 232 projects, total registered capital of 376 million USD, focusing in the fields of services, real estate, industrial production and information technology.
In fact, in terms of FDI inflows from Korea in the Central Region, it must be mentioned the appearance of the Doosan Vina brand in Dung Quat Economic Zone (Quang Ngai). This is the first FDI enterprise, also the most successful enterprise today in the heavy industry sector in Quang Ngai.
With the estimated revenue of 200 million USD/year, Doosan Vina makes a great contribution to the budget revenue and enhances the export value of Quang Ngai. Doosan Vina is creating jobs for about 2,000 employees, of which over 85% are Quang Ngai citizen.
Binh Dinh is also a locality that has been interested by Korean businesses recently. According to the Center for Investment Promotion of Binh Dinh Province, the projects coming from Korean investors are the 70 million USD solar power projects invested by QN Korea Energy Company; Project of high-tech pork farm of New Hop Livestock Company Limited, invested nearly 5 million USD; Wesbrook Vietnam wood processing factory project, invested USD 2.5 million…
In the Central Region – Highlands of Vietnam, in the first 9 months of 2020, Korea is the leading partner in terms of total registered capital in the region, reaching 79.41 million USD with 23 new projects, focusing on processing sectors, manufacturing, technological expertise, accommodation and catering services.
Accumulated to date, Korea is second only to Singapore in this area. Korean enterprises are present in most of the strong sectors and fields of localities such as heavy industry, real estate, tourism, textiles, manufacturing, processing and investment in industrial zone infrastructure.
With the potentials of strategic location, natural resources, abundant human resources, an increasingly complete infrastructure system, the advantage of developing tourism real estate with a series of cultural heritages, long and beautiful coastlines… Combined with new strengths such as trade and investment agreements, breakthrough investment incentive mechanisms and policies, many provinces in the Central Region – Highlands are becoming trust and safety investment destinations of foreign investors, especially Korean businesses.

Soulmates with Soulmarks throughout time
Just random stuff of, what if soulmarks were a thing throughout history? What pairings would be considered normal due to that? XD also bored, also pretty clothes. Just grabbed suitable images off of pinterest if they are yours let me know and I’ll credit you or take them down. ^_^
Lady Adelaide and Miss Isabelle, sharing an afternoon stroll together after meeting in the park and discovering their bond. Lady Adelaide is delighted to tell all about their fortune, while the more retiring Miss Isabelle blushes in happiness. I’ll add a story if I can think of one. ^_^
Noted dandy Miss Alexandra and Mademoiselle Victoire - These to Mademoiselles met at a gala hosted by Victoire’s uncle, the French Ambassador to England. Pictured here to commemorate the discovery of their bond.
Binh and Hoa - the young ladies met at a market, and their first words were part of an argument over oranges. ^_^
Emanuel and Gladys Tailor - Met at a bookclub luncheon, both had nearly given up on finding their soulmate and were quite surprised and delighted to find one another at long last.
Imani and Clarence McLaughlin - Imani and Clarence met onboard a steamship, as both were traveling to find their soulmate, on the way to Scotland, as Imani;s soulmark included the word lassie, and Clarence, who’s family came from scotland but he himself had never been, but was going because his soulmate was in Gaelic (which Imani had learned do to her soulmark) and he assumed his soulmate might be a highlander. Clarence could barely speak any Gaelic, having a poor ear for language, but Imani made certain all eight of their children were fluent as well as in English and her own native language.
Colette and Alphonse Aubertin - they met when they were quite young when Colette’s family came over from France and built a farm four miles away from the orphanage Alphonse grew up in. He was taken in and raised with the family, and he and Colette married at 20 and 21 respectively. Alphonse chose to take on the last name of the family who raised him, having no attachment to his birth surname.
Eustace and Rudolph Williams-Lance
Met when they both applied for the same position. Mrs. Edith Tau, the one doing the hiring was at a loss as to what to do, since both were well qualified for the job, and she didn’t want to ruin their happiness, and so hired both with a shrug.
Janine, Eleanor, and Eudora Finch - these three ladies met while out shopping, and apparently there was a confusion about gloves.
Edward and Robert Lane - met at a horse-race when Edward apologized for his Robert in the head with his elbow.

thfc 2-1 tbd: đinh tiến thành was in the starting lineup AND scored the decisive goal so i guess he’s okay after all. bình định thua thì mình hơi ngạc nhiên vì vía vủng sân khách đang tốt thôi, chứ đá chán thấy mẹ nội đoạn cuối bị dẫn bàn tràn lên tấn công mà đíu thấy mảng miếng nào.
overall

Ninh Binh
Every good story starts with a guy accidentally ordering a kilo of fish. It's a fact of life and why should this one be any different?
Via quite a circuitous route back to Hanoi from Ha Long bay, plus an obligatory wait for 2 hours in Highlands coffee (at this point if you stuck me I'd bleed Vietnamese black coffee out of my track marks), we made our way to the van taking us to Ninh Binh.
This was pretty routine. Turn up, sit in an empty room with big pictures of vietnamese tourist attractions up around you while some guy sits with his feet up in a chair, kind of watching you, kinda doing his own thing. He might be the van driver, he might be his brother. All you know really is that you're in the place the ticket guy told you to go to and eventually someone might tap you on the shoulder and tell you to get in a van, but in a consenting way.
When they decided they were ready (stuff doesn't run 'on time') they packed us up into the "limousine", aptly described given the pimped out disco light ceiling & leather recliners. The driver then seemed to remember he hadn't locked his door, or took some methamphetamines because boy did he tear into the accelrator for the next 45 minutes. Google Maps thought the trip should be 1 hour 30. This guy almost halved that. If we hadn't been watching Clarkson's Farm & had actually looked out the window, chances are we would have neem asking God for forgiveness for our sins, but you know, we got some time back and Vietnam only has 10x the fatal traffic incidents the UK does, so who's worried? Not me.
When we got to Ninh Binh city, we discovered a place less multi cultural than Hanoi or Ha Long bay and less easily navigated by the two bumbling foreigners who don't speak Vietnamese. We rocked up to the nearest place Google told us was half decent before looking through a cryptic menu that gave no clue to anything and had strange sub-clauses to every price.
I attempted ordering a beer, a specific guy even came over to accept my beer order. I then told another girl I thought was taking our food order. No beer appeared. I began to wonder if we'd ordered anything. Turned out, when speaking to a third person, no, no we had not. What she could also confirm to us, via the medium of speaking into our phone on translate, was that what we had tried to order, was unusual.
"You have chosen an entire chicken a kilo or grouperfish and 2 kilos of rice. Are you sure?" - we were not sure. It became apparent that this particular restaurant only serves food by weight, or in entire animal form. Essentially you couldn't order less than a kilo of anything. We thanked the kind lady, cancelled the chicken and stuck to our fish kilo. It arrived with its own ceramic warming station complete with tealight candles. A tasty soy gnger and soy marinaded grouper, it went perfectly with the simple steamed rice and the whole meal was pretty pleasant once we got past the confusion. Google Translate team, we owe you.
After that, we took a taxi to a place "near" where we were staying (but wasn't) before finally arriving at the Banana Tree after some map reading. The slick looking guy behind the desk greeted us, schmoozed, keenly made sure we had put down or deposits for everything and tried to sell us a private driver for the next day (checking Grab... we could halve the price he was quoting) we hit up the bar for the night because there's a pretty fun one attached to the Banana Tree.
We were greeted again by a cavalcade of Spanish voices. Mariola, dragged us over to the table where 9 girls & guys from all corners of her homeland were, brought together by the We Road app. A service that pairs random strangers together into big group tour excursions, a way to adventure and meet people. Pretty cool find if you want to join a big group & they were a pretty interesting crowd, among them was even a travelling magician (despite asking, no tricks performed that night.. lame..). After a few drinks, people started to drift off, so so did we.
Day broke and we were ready to head to Trang An, the sublimely picturesque waterway traversing through caves, islands and pagodas in the carved out rugged landscape of Vietnam's north. You have to wait for a boat of 4 to go anywhere, so we were paired up with a couple of Vietnamese girls. We were pleasantly surprised that here, we were kinda in the minority. There were a bucketload of Vietnamese tourists here all enjoying their own scenery and doing their own thing, and it was really refreshing. We didn't just hear European tongues wafting back and forth, we really liked it.
Our Kind Vietnamese boat companions for the day had umbrellas ready at the slightest hint of a photon. They really did not want to see sunlight with vampiric passion. Nothing was going to spoil that pristine skin with a tan. This might seem weird to western points of view, who want that bronzed look above all else, but is fairly normal in East Asia, where a pale complexion is a sign of elegance and status. A tan is a sign you're a farm worker.
Now you might think when I mention sun, that means it was a pleasant day. A bit of time on a boat in the sunshine? Wow, sounds wonderful. Well if you were to get a boat down the river styx and enter the hellmouth past Cerberus' maw it would likely reach similar temperatures. If Dante's inferno has less than 82% humidity in 40 degree heat, he's missing a trick. It was oppressive.
Accuweather, as we slowly began to asphyxiate from lack of air, said it was only "quite hot"... I'd now like to go to the Accuweather offices. I'd like to lock their thermostat to 40 degrees. I'd like to close all the windows and perhaps leave a lot of wet towels on their radiators. To see how many of their employees describe the environment as just ' quite hot' while they dissolve into pools.
We serenely continued down these waterways, propelled masterfully by our old Vietnamese lady captain (who had arms like tree trunks). We sailed past the movie set for Kong: Skull island, and we stopped so the two vietnamese girls could take a scenic photo with.... Mariola (turns out tall Western girls are more interesting than nature). After this we had the obligatory run in with the Spanish girls and rounded the trip off, serenly spotting out deer and pagodas as we cruised back.
Trang An is wonderful. It was amazing coming out of Ha Long bay that we didn't get inertia to this kind of beauty. The landscape was phenomenal, you just can't find this somewhere else. The beauty of paddling through soaring cliffs with pagoda left and right is breathtaking. I've never seen a place like this before. Everything is green, the water, the cliffs, even the sky has a green blue hue. It's a world away from the blues & greys of Scandinavia or the UK you might get from kayaking. It's stunning.
After a shower (you need to average at least two a day here, the sweat is maddening) we wolfed down some Nem Lui lemongrass, outrageously fresh pork skewers served on lemongrass & overheard and called out some bullshit from the group of possibly 7000 Irish lads claiming that the "Basque Leader" had decided to invent the famous drink Calimocho because he'd ordered too much bad wine. This is, a literal red rag to a bull to a hot blooded Spaniard like Mariola, only too quick to want to tell him NO YOU ARE WRONG, THAT IS NOT CORRECT (here is the correct story for those interested) But later on, we were fuelled to scale the Mua Cave walk. A "reasonable" climb to a breathtaking viewpoint surrounded by a natural caves system. However when a 'reasonable' climb combs in 80% humidity, it is like attempting that 'reasonable climb' while being waterboarded with a kettle.
Even cool names like Tiger Cave couldn't distract you on the way up. At least not until the distinct lack of health and safety at the top sharpened you into survival mode as you were invited to straddle, duck and weave around and hop over a stone dragon perched precariously on top of a mountain. Most of the dragon was spikes and it was lain on top of a particularly sharp rock formation. But what's the nanny state ever done to protect anyone really? When we were 5 we all split our skulls on mountain dragons and we turned out just fine!
Obligatorily meeting the Spanish girls on the way up, and down it was time for dinner. We went to a little place a bit away from the main strip and tucked into some cashed chicken and goat soup with burned rice as we watched an increasingly drunk Vietnamese friend group push the boundaries of how many times the drunk boyfriend can playkick his girlfriend before she smashed his brains in, then time for bed. At least I would have liked to have gone to bed, I was distracted by the odd new smell that two English girls had brought with them into the room. A weird odour, as if their two mountain warehouse backpacks had been stuffed with sweating ham.. I thought it was just me until every other dorm bed was talking about this ham smell come morning... girls.. please leave the ham at home.
Our final day in Ninh Binh started with the hypnotic ritual of watching our vietnamese drip coffee ooze delicious nectar into the sweet condensed milk below, while we watched the rain come down... as finally the heat had broken and the rains came... It meant we could break out the card games at last as we whiled down the hours to our 11pm train to Hue.
As well as killing time, they were a nice distraction from those last minute travel stresses, me ripping my swim shorts on the door... which REALLY pissed me off. Mariola losing her airpods and then arguing tooth and nail with the hostel housekeeping staff. She adamantly knew she had left them in the bed and that they would be in the laundry pile & do not argue with this girl when she's assured. Two members of staff and a lot of ignoring later, they were rescued with a flourish and a death stare. We needed some card games.. Hell it got to the point where mariola just threw in the towel, found a woman in the street and hopped on the back of a motorbike to get a massage. Stress does terrible things.
As we sat down for dinner before the end of our downtime day, I was helpfully greeted with the message "Oh I think that's where the duck that gave me food poisoning was" as we were halfway through our roast duck... Hoping to survive the night, we headed out to the train station, only the two hours early... into a completely empty train station that we were only convinced wasn't closed because of three helpful staff members who said, yup... you're just super early. We facetimed our friends whose honeymoon is going to be in Vietnam, waited out the 2 hours and then hit up the night train... next stop... Hue!

#latepost for Tet party for South Vietnam operations. The second time we had all unit business combined party; in total about 1,200 employees. I have got approval from my boss to skip this party because I signed up for VTM Moc Chau but it got postponed so I went to Saigon for this and for audit closing meeting. We have bigger operations in Saigon and more Indonesians too, but no newcomer for this year. My favourite parts from this Tet party are DJ Mie and her boyfriend Hong Thanh and the dance performance from Production team in Binh Thuan Feedmill (see the video; I can’t dance, stiff as bamboo stick, so it’s always amazed me when I see people who can dance!! I mean how?!). Typical Tet party is speech from BOD (board of directors), lucky draws for employees (managers are not eligible for this), and one by one they will come to your table to toast (get ready to drink a lot if you happen to share the table with BOD), and of course enjoying the performances from many unit businesses. I’m happy to see that many farm employees dress up to come to this party; it’s like proper make up and hairdo. I’m glad that they have chance not to wear the farm uniforms at least once for this party and as usual I can’t recognise them 😍😍 the last photo was with the new head of south operations; a smart guy coming from Financial controller and now into full operations. I like to listen to him when he’s sharing his experiences and knowledge as long as he’s not asking me “when are you going to settle down?” 😜 yep, this kinda question is not only coming from your aunties or uncles back in Jakarta!!!
