Dear Hearts and Gentle People 16
Summary: While out exploring and scavenging the wasteland, you come across an old world object in remarkable condition. You go to Cooper and find out exactly what it really is.
Pairings: The Ghoul | Cooper Howard x Female Reader
Warnings: Smut. Sex toys. Vibrator. Rope play. Edging. Cooper is a menace. Body worship.
Masterlist
You frown down at the pale pink object that you'd found in a drawer beside the bed. You and Cooper were inside an old apartment building in the "rich side of town" as Cooper had put it when they two of you had arrived in Hollywood. The building was sturdy despite the time and the damage done from the atomic bombs, and you had made the decision to bunk down inside for the evening since it was relatively safe.
The object gets shoved in your back pocket, and you go about raiding the rest of the bedroom before going to find your ghoul. He is kicked back on the couch in the living room, feet propped up on the table and watching a static laced cartoon. You tip toe forward, but the ghoul hears something crunch under your feet and turns around to smirk at you, his ruined brow twitching up.
"Gotta do better than that to try and get me, Baby."
You scrunch your nose at him, then round the couch to stand by his legs. Cooper drops them to the ground, and you step between them, a grin on your face as you move to straddle his lap. His hands land on your waist, pull you forward, and your knees his the back of the couch. The seat of your pants is flush with his own, and you can already feel his cock hardening under you.
Cooper grins, "Comfy Sugar?"
He rocks under you, and you nod as you bite your lip to keep the sigh of pleasure from falling. The ghoul smooths his hands up your sides, roughly digging his fingers in, before slipping to your back to grab your ass, only to come in contact with the object you'd shoved in your back pocket earlier. Coop's brow furrows and he grabs it.
"I wanted to ask you about that," you begin and look at the faded pink object, brows furrowed when you notice the excited gleam lingering in Cooper’s golden gaze, "What is it?"
The ghoul recognizes the toy immediately, shaped vaugly like a microphone with three buttons on the side and covered in a soft silicone. The company who made the vibratior assured their buyers that the product was "guaranteed to last forever." Cooper wanted to find out if that was true or not.
"This," He says with a mischievous grin, "Is a sex toy."
Your eyes go wide, and you reach for it, turning it this way and that as you examine the object. You find one of the buttons and press down, jumping when the toy comes to life and vibrates violently in your palm.
Cooper feels his cock swell, and he takes it away from you, eyes half-lidded as plans swirl into reality, "Get undressed, Sugar. I'll show you what it can do."
~~~
A ragged moan rips from your throat, and you thrash in your bindings. Cooper has strung you up on the bed. Wrists lashed together and tied at the headboard while your ankles remain free, for now at least. Your stomach clenches again when Cooper presses the head of the vibrator against your clit, and curses tumble into the air. The rope burns against your flesh, but the minor pain just turns you on even more.
It feels like it's been hours since Cooper ordered you to undress and then tied you to the bed. The ghoul sits between your legs, one hand keeping the toy pressed to your swollen clit, his other hand plays with your soaked folds, gently swiping them back and forth. His middle finger ghosts over your fluttering hole, and you grit your teeth, hips jerking.
"Ah, uh," Cooper admonished, "You don't get to come until I say you do, Sugar."
He leans down to press sweet kisses to your inner thighs, smirking at the way they tremble and twitch. Your body is like a live wire, sensitive to every touch and press of his lips. Up he goes, worshipping you to his hearts content, and his fingers flex against your cunt. You groan when one finally slides inside of you, the stretch making you see stars.
You can feel the crest coming, heat pooling down, and you're so close until you suddenly aren't. Cooper stalls his gentle thrusts of his hand and takes away the toy, and you glare at him through your sweaty bangs. He grins meanly right back, and you drop your head back down to the pillow with a sigh.
"Are you not havin' fun, Sweetheart?" Cooper coos below you and leans down to presses against your hip, peaking up at you with mischievous golden eyes, "Can't take it anymore?"
He loves having you like this, all strung up and open just for him. Your thighs shake against his face, and he nips your sensitive flesh. You look beautiful, skin flushed, and covered in a fine layer of sweat from the pleasurable torture that he's put you through. Your cunt flutters and twitches, and Cooper can't help but lean down and kiss your lower lips.
You moan when his tongue sweeps across your folds, gathering slick and slurping it down with a sigh of content. He stays there, drinking straight from the source like a man who'd wandered the desert for days. You jerk against your bonds, and the rope burns, leaving behind red marks that Cooper would sooth later on.
"Cooper," you grunt and flex your stomach, looking for that crest again and finding far away. You want to come so badly it hurts, "Cooper, please finish me."
The ghoul ignores you for a moment, content with his fun, before he stops with a soft sigh and raises up, his face coated with your slick. You watch him lick his lips and grin down at you.
"Beg a lil sweeter, honey," He drawls, "I know you can do it."
You blush and roll your eyes at his demands, but you know an order when you hear one.
"Will you please let me come, Cooper? It hurts," you plead and send him your best pitiful, woe is me look, "You're the only one who makes me feel this way."
Cooper hums lowly, appeased with your begging, "Mhm. That's a good girl."
A shout rips through your throat when he presses the vibrator back to your clit, and the powerful sensation explodes through your body. Your legs jerk, and you bite you lip hard enough to draw blood. His fingers pump again, and you bare your teeth in a silent snarl when his longest finger brushes up against that spongy spot hidden inside your cunt.
"There it is," Cooper rumbles, and focus on that spot, the tips of his fingers massaging harshly, and you throw back your head, hips jerking as the crest gets closer and closer. However, there is another feeling gathering in your lower stomach, a pressure near your bladder that makes panic zing through you.
"Relax, baby. Let it happen," Cooper orders, and you struggle to do so, that pressure building with pleasure until you break. Tears stream down your face when your pussy clenches tight around his fingers, gushing around him and soaking the bed below you.
Your body feels rung out and exhausted when you come back to yourself. Cooper has already stowed away the toy and untied your wrists. He kisses the burns left behind and slips onto the bed with you, tugging you close and curling an arm around your waist. You snuggle into his side, eyes slipping closed before a thought comes to mind.
"...we're keeping that thing, right?"
Linenspa mattresses have gained popularity in recent years due to their affordable prices and promising features. However, if you have heard rumors about fiberglass being present in Linenspa mattresses, it is important to separate fact from fiction. In this article, we will examine the evidence surrounding this claim and provide you with a clear understanding of the truth. Analyzing Product Composition And Materials Before delving into the presence of fiberglass in Linenspa mattresses, it is crucial to analyze the product composition and materials. Linenspa mattresses are known for their hybrid design, which combines layers of foam and innerspring coils to offer both comfort and support. The specific components used in the construction of these mattresses are carefully selected to meet industry standards and ensure customer satisfaction. According to Linenspa's official website, the outer cover of their mattresses is made from a polyester fabric blend. This fabric is chosen for its softness, durability, and ability to regulate temperature. As for the inner layers, Linenspa incorporates memory foam, gel-infused memory foam, and high-density support foam. These materials work together to provide pressure relief and promote a restful sleep experience. Testing Methodologies And Results When it comes to testing the safety and quality of mattresses, various reputable organizations employ rigorous methodologies to assess their properties. In the case of Linenspa mattresses, independent testing has been conducted to determine if fiberglass is present in the product. One such test is the "cigarette resistance test," where a burning cigarette is brought into contact with the mattress cover. If the mattress contains fiberglass, it will melt and produce smoke or emit a distinct odor. However, the results of multiple tests conducted on Linenspa mattresses have consistently shown no evidence of fiberglass presence, ensuring peace of mind for consumers. Expert Opinions Additionally, it is essential to consider the opinions of experts in the field when evaluating claims about fiberglass in Linenspa mattresses. Industry experts, including mattress reviewers and orthopedic specialists, have extensively examined the construction and materials used in Linenspa mattresses. In conclusion, the evidence clearly suggests that Linenspa mattresses do not have fiberglass in their composition. Through a thorough analysis of the product's composition, independent testing results, and expert opinions, it is evident that these mattresses are free from any hazardous materials. Therefore, if you have been considering purchasing a Linenspa mattress, you can rest assured knowing that fiberglass is not something you need to worry about.
Ensuring Safety And Transparency
Regulations And Standards For Mattress Safety When it comes to purchasing a new mattress, safety should always be a top priority. It's important to understand the regulations and standards that govern mattress safety in order to make an informed decision. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has set guidelines and regulations that all mattresses must comply with to ensure consumer safety. These regulations include requirements for flammability, chemical emissions, and labeling. When it comes to flammability, mattresses must meet the Federal Flammability Standard (16 CFR Part 1633), which sets out the testing procedures and performance requirements that mattresses must meet. This standard aims to reduce the risk of fire and related injuries resulting from mattresses catching fire. In addition to flammability, mattresses are also subject to regulations regarding chemical emissions. The CPSC, in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has developed the Voluntary Product Standard (16 CFR Part 1303) for chemical emissions from mattresses. This standard limits the amount of potentially harmful chemicals that can be released from the mattress into the air, ensuring a healthier sleeping environment. Labeling is also an important aspect of mattress safety. Manufacturers are required to provide clear and accurate labeling on their mattresses to help consumers make informed decisions. This includes information such as the type of materials used, compliance with safety standards, and warranty details. Transparency In Mattress Labeling And Disclosures Transparency is crucial when it comes to mattress labeling and disclosures. Consumers have the right to know exactly what they are purchasing and what materials are used in the construction of their mattresses. With the rise of online shopping, it's become even more important for mattress manufacturers to provide clear and accurate information about their products. One way manufacturers can ensure transparency is by providing detailed product descriptions on their websites. This should include information about the materials used, certifications obtained, and compliance with safety standards. It's also important for manufacturers to disclose if their mattresses contain any potential allergens or hazardous materials. In addition to product descriptions, manufacturers should also provide independent third-party certifications to validate their claims. Certifications such as CertiPUR-US® and GREENGUARD Gold can provide reassurance that the mattress has been tested and meets certain safety and environmental standards. Best Practices For Consumer Awareness Consumer awareness is key to making an informed decision when purchasing a mattress. By following some best practices, consumers can ensure they are choosing a safe and transparent product. One of the first steps is to research and compare different mattress brands and models. Look for reliable sources of information such as independent reviews, industry publications, and consumer advocacy websites. These sources can provide valuable insights into the safety and quality of different mattresses. When researching, pay close attention to the materials used in the mattresses. Look for certifications and disclosures that validate the safety and transparency of the product. Avoid mattresses that have questionable or vague labeling. Finally, don't be afraid to reach out to the manufacturer directly if you have any questions or concerns. Reputable companies will be transparent and responsive to consumer inquiries. Remember, your safety and satisfaction are paramount when shopping for a new mattress.
Call center workers pay for the privilege
If you only learn one technical term from labor economics, make it "chickenization" - Christopher Leonard's term for the way that the Big Three poultry processors have structured the chicken-farming industry (I learned it from Zephyr Teachout). https://pluralistic.net/2020/07/29/break-em-up/#break-em-up Here's chickenization: you're a chicken farmer. There is only one company that can buy your birds, thanks to market concentration. They tell you how to design and maintain your coop. They sell you the chicks. They tell you which feed to use, how much and when. They tell you when the lights go on and when they go off. They tell you how which vet to use, and which medicines they can use. They bind you to secrecy through nondisclosure and strip you of the right to sue through arbitration. They experiment on you. Your barn is filled with sensors that they monitor, and they tell you to vary feed, lighting, medicine and other variables to see if your birds get bigger. They are the only buyer in your region, so they know how each farmer's birds are thriving. But if the "independent" farmers ever tried to compare notes, they'd be violating their nondisclosure agreements and could be sued. Farmers who complain to regulators are barred from the market. Once your birds are grown, you bring them to the processor, who exploits their information asymmetry to figure out how to pay you JUST ENOUGH to go back to things, but not enough to get ahead. Since chickenization, poultry farmers have faced a wave of suicides. Once you know about chickenization, you see it everywhere: crop farmers are chickenized by seed companies, and Uber drivers are chickenized by their apps. The contours of chickenization are impossible to miss: it's a shifting of all the risk from the employer's side of the balance sheet to the workers', using the fiction of independent contractorship, the data-gathering capabilities of digital work, and monopolies. Today, I learned about the worst chickenization scheme I've ever encountered: a giant, global company that has chickenized a vast workforce, but maintains total secrecy, even as it services massive blue-chip companies from Airbnb to Disney. That company is Arise, and Propublica and Planet Money just blew the roof off its ghastly charnel house of a chicken farm by, as Ken Armstrong, Justin Elliott and Ariana Tobin reported out leaks, arbitration reports, and whistleblower accounts. https://www.propublica.org/article/meet-the-customer-service-reps-for-disney-and-airbnb-who-have-to-pay-to-talk-to-you#1001065 Here's chickenization, Arise style: the company is a outsource phone support system. Workers have to pay to work for Arise (they're "independent contractors"): buy a dedicated PC, internet connection and other equipment. They have to do weeks of unpaid "training" just to get started, and then they have to pay more to get specific training for every one of Arise's giant corporate clients, from AT&T to Carnival Cruises to Comcast to Disney to Airbnb to Intuit to Barnes and Noble to Ebay. After passing random, invasive, in-home inspections, after shelling out thousands of dollars and doing weeks - if not months - of unpaid training, they are finally eligible to sign up for shifts. These shifts come in 30 minute slices, widely spaced, and turning them down gets you blacklisted. It's impossible to hold down another job while you're an Arise chicken-farmer. But you don't get paid for 30-minute shifts. You just get paid for the time that you're talking to customers. The whole time you talk to a customer, an algorithm is ready to penalize you: i.e., if it takes too long to deal with queries, or if there're too many pauses. Meanwhile, the client's outsource managers randomly (or not-randomly) listen in on your calls, and they can penalize you too. The main penalty is being "deskilled" - barred from working for that client, after paying (in cash and time) to get trained to be their phone rep. Workers are barred from hanging up on abusive customers. Women report high levels of sexual harassment, which they have to patiently endure, because they risk getting fired if they hang up on their abusers. And all workers are expected to tolerate unlimited abuse from callers. 64% of Arise's workers are people of color. 89% of them are women. Arise's recruiting ads target Black women in particular. There *is* a way to get ahead in Arise: recruit other workers. Because, in addition to everything else, it's a pyramid scheme, and the business is riddled with people who've been previously convicted of wire fraud. Nearly every person in the Arise structure is chickenized:. The following jobs are all performed by "independent contractors":
Client Support Professionals
Quality Assurance Performance Facilitators
Chat Performance Facilitators
Escalation Performance Facilitators
Not only do you have to pay to work for Arise - you have to pay (a "contract termination fee") to stop working for them. Arise binds workers to arbitration, meaning they can't sue. The right of workers to join class actions in spite of arbitration waivers went to the Supreme Court in '18, where the illegitimate justice Neal Gorsuch wrote the majority opinion, ruling against workers. Arise honors Juneteenth with a day off for all employees. But all those Black women it has chickenized are independent businesses and are still expected to show up for work. Arise's founder is Richard Cherry, a Canadian "serial entrepreneur" who started off writing scammy get-rich-quick and lose-weight-quick books before moving to Florida and getting heavily involved with the Home Shopping Network. Today, the company is a division of a giant private equity fund, Warburg Pincus.
Planet Earth is Blue- 2
One
AO3
Logan had been a member of the Silver Serpent for a good three years now, three years being counted in earth time with the calendar app on Logan’s phone (which somehow still worked, despite there not being any internet service in space. Logan had yet to figure out why he could still watch YouTube or access anything with WiFi, really).
During his three years, Logan learned quite a lot. In addition to learning a few words in Janus’s language (‘hello,’ ‘help,’ and ‘My name is Logan,’ the only phrases Janus said would really be useful), Logan also learned how to commit crimes in space. It sounded much more exciting than it actually was, of course, since most of the crime Janus and the crew committed was the smuggling of slightly illegal goods. The most valuable thing Logan had learned, however, was how to hack alien technology.
He had always been good with computers, but now with access to technology more advanced than anyone on earth could dream of? He was almost unstoppable. He single-handedly erased all warrants for Virgil’s arrest in three different galaxies, as well as cleaning up Janus’s record.
There had been several close calls over the years, though Janus handled most of them nonviolently. There had only been one occasion where a space cop had gone mysteriously missing out of the airlock. Being aboard a ship with crewmates that had a various amount of arrest warrants on different planets wasn’t perfect, but it sure beat earth. Logan would take aliens over transphobia any day of the week.
The Silver Serpent’s current load was a cargo hold full of Volatum, something Logan didn’t want anything to do with, as it was almost like a narcotic for the Umutu, the species native to Trappist-E and H, as well as a few weapons, all hidden under what they were legally delivering, a plant native to Kepler-62 called ibiryo.
The journey between planets was low-stress, as the only thing they really had to worry about was raiders- Logan had never met them, and hoped that he wouldn’t. But the entry to Trappist-E where they were to drop off the Volatum? The entire process was extremely stressful. First, permission to dock was needed- Janus took care of that part, as captain. Once permission was given, glorified border patrol guards would inspect the ship for illegal substances. This was the part that always made Logan nervous. What would happen if the Volatum and weapons were found?
Logan stood in the hallway with the rest of the crew, as per instructed, and watched the guards look around. Virgil glared at them as one opened the door to his room. It was only Patton putting a webbed hand on Virgil’s back that stopped him from hissing. Roman and Remus looked at each other, giggling at something only they heard.
Janus put a hand on Logan's shoulder and gave a small squeeze. During his time on the ship, Logan found that while Janus wasn’t one to hold long conversations, he instead communicated via physical touch.
“It’ll be fine,” Janus whispered so only Logan could hear. “I’m confident in my abilities.”
Logan gave a subtle nod.
It took an achingly long time, but the three guards that had boarded eventually come back out.
“You’re free to land, Silver Serpent,” one of them waved as they stepped out of the ship.
“Thank you,” Janus nodded, gesturing for the crew to follow him to navigation where they strapped into their seats in preparation for reentering an atmosphere. Going back into the pull of gravity was… an experience, to say the least. It reminded Logan of when he had been on a plane that had to land in the rain- bumpy, jarring, and overall making his insides feel like they had been turned upside down and then crushed with a weight. The first time Logan had reentered, he had been sick to his stomach. But now, after hundreds of trips to different planets, reentry was much more bearable, though still not at all pleasant.
Logan closed his eyes and focused on his breathing, something he found helped. He only opened his eyes once Janus announced, “Gentlemen, we have landed!”
Patton was the first to unbuckle, and he immediately lay down on the floor with his arms and legs spread out.
“I really don’t like that,” Patton mumbled.
“Neither do I,” Logan stretched his arms above his head.
“Alas, it is necessary. Now, we don’t have time to lounge around quite yet. We have to deliver,” Janus helped Patton up. “The ibiryo buyers will be here soon.”
“When will the second customer be dropping by?” Virgil asked.
Janus just shrugged by moving his top set of arms. “Soon. But let’s get to work unloading.”
He ushered them to the cargo hold, where it was Logan and Patton’s job to hand boxes of ibiryo to Janus, Remus, Roman, and Virgil, who brought the boxes out to the dock to be picked up by the buyers.
When the ibiryo was finally unloaded, Logan sat with the rest of the crew outside, his muscles aching. Roman and Remus’s words were muffled by their breathing apparatuses, which they had to use to breath in the oxygen-rich atmosphere of Trappist-E, as they needed nitrogen, not oxygen.
The sunset of Trappist-E was close to that of earth’s sunsets, albeit dimmer, as the sun that the planet orbited didn’t give off nearly as much energy as earth’s sun. The air was thinner, making it a little difficult for Logan to breathe, especially when he was still wearing his binder, but it wasn;t nearly as bad as it had been on Trappist-H, where Logan hard to borrow one of the breathing devices and stop binding.
Janus suddenly stood up next to him and raised one of his arms in greeting to a figure walking towards the now-empty docking area and began to walk towards them.
“Is that them?” Logan whispered to Virgil, who sat next to him.
“Yup,” Virgil replied. “I don’t know who they are, but I’m pretty sure they’re some kind of gang leader. You could probably find out with your fancy computer skills, Teach.”
“Probably,” Logan agreed. “Though it would likely take a lot of sorting through criminal records on this planet.”
Janus and the newcomer walked back to the ship. “Roman, Remus, go get the gifts for my friend here.”
The twins nodded and stood up, hurrying into the ship to bring out the Volatum. The newcomer left their hood up when they spoke to Janus, but Logan could tell they were Umutu- the coarse black fur around their hands gave it away. “I take it that my gift is in good condition?” they asked.
“Of course. Nothing but the best from my crew,” Janus replied.
“Very nice. Still the price we agreed on?”
“Correct. Who would I be if I changed the price upon delivery? A government agent?”
Janus and the Umutu buyer laughed. “Ah, here it is,” Janus took the boxes from Roman and Remus.
“Thirty pounds of Volatum. Twelve guns, twelve cases of ammunition,” the buyer inspected. “It seems to be in order. Let me transfer the payment and I’ll be on my way.”
Janus nodded and waved Logan over to wire the transfer. Logan held out a tablet and typed out a code that would allow the funds to be untraceably deposited into an account Logan had set up for himself- most of the funds were used by Janus without Logan’s complaint, as he didn’t really have a need for the money, though he did purchase a small souvenir for himself after every planet he visited.
Each trinket was put carefully in the drawer of his nightstand, though to anyone else it would look like a drawer full of clutter- a ball of yarn made from a cotton like plant from Roman and Remus’s native planet, Wolf-1061-C. A branch from a tree-like organism from Gliese-667-Cc. It was also comforting to know that the type of shirts that proclaimed “I went to New York and all I got was this t-shirt” we’re not confined to earth’s tourism culture- he had several of those, each from a different planet.
The Umutu took the tablet, typed in a code, and handed it back to Logan with a nod.
“Crew of the Silver Serpent, I salute you,” they said.
“Pissing off authority is what we strive to do,” Janus grinned.
“A noble cause. Now, I will be on my way.”
The buyer left the docks, leaving the crew alone.
“Well,” Logan announced. “I’m going to go to my room and sleep. If you see something interesting in the market, buy it for me?”
“Of course!” Roman replied.
“Definitely,” Janus nodded. “Well be taking off in a few hours, so now would be your chance to go shopping if you want to.”
“Thank you, but I’m exhausted,” Logan walked back into the ship, where he tugged off his binder and pulled on a sleeping shirt before crawling under his exceptionally warm and light blankets on his small bed and falling asleep almost immediately.
He woke to shouting.
Stumbling out of his bedroom, he put his glasses in just in time to see Virgil running past him from the engine room to the front navigation, screaming some untranslatable words at the top of his lungs (untranslatable because there was no English equivalent, not because the translator device refused to translate unpleasant words. He had heard plenty of those streaming from Virgil’s mouth when there was an engine malfunction).
Logan took a moment to realize what was happening before chasing after Virgil.
“Who’s chasing us this time!?” Logan shouted over the clanking of the engines and the scuttle of Virgil’s spidery legs against the cold metal floor.
“The cops!” Virgil shouted over his shoulder.
“Those motherfuckers!” Logan cracked his knuckles as he ran after Virgil.
Logan slid into a seat and began typing at a tablet. “What’s their ship name? I’m going to slow them down! Wait- are you kidding me? They’re using an unsecured network… hold on. Patton, look out the window and tell me what’s happening.”
“They’re still shooting at us! Wait! They’ve stopped! And now- now they’re… flying in circles?” Patton hopped out of his seat to the thick glass panes that served as windows to report what was going on as Logan typed commands into the tablet.
“Perfect! This won't be able to last forever, so get out of here!” Logan told Janus and Virgil.
“Virgil, can we warp?” Janus shouted over the engine.
“Once! Now go go go! Now do it now!” Virgil shouted back.
With a flip of a switch, the crew of the Silver Serpent successfully evaded the law once again, and with shouts of “ACAB, BITCHES!”, they arrived in the Fireworks Galaxy.
Had Logan been on the spaceship equivalent of a cap car, he would have heard the confused shouts of the space-cops as they tried to figure out what had caused the sudden malfunctions in the steering mechanisms and the reason only the left engine was working. But Logan was not on the space-cop car- he was with the crew of Janus’s ship, with the different species he had learned to call his friends, his family, shouting obscenities at the space-cops, as all upstanding citizens did.
“Well,” Remus announced. “Fuck the police! Jan, where are we going next?”
Janus shrugged. “Wherever we want, Remus. Wherever we want. Logan, you pick.”
Logan froze for a moment, not used to the spotlight being on him. He looked out the window at the galaxy, at the nebulae and planets and countless stars, at the infinity that was the universe. He had seen things like this before, of course, but he could never get over the sheer vastness of space.
“Let’s go to that one,” he pointed at a random planet.
“That one it is,” Janus gave Logan a six-armed hug from behind.
In addition to learning how to hack spaceships, Logan also learned that Patton’s and Janus’s hugs were quite possibly the best in the entire universe. Janus’s multiple arms made hugging all that better, and Logan leaned into the taller humanoid (Logan still wasn’t quite sure what descriptor, exactly, that he was supposed to use. Janus wasn’t a figure, as those were shapes in fog or darkness. He wasn’t a man, which was made obvious by the four extra arms and shimmering golden scales. Janus wasn’t just a friend, either. Logan considered them all family, but he did occasionally wish there could be something… more with Janus. So Janus was simply the taller humanoid, as not even Logan had the proper vocabulary to describe him).
Logan watched the galaxy pass by, still in Janus’s protective hug, as the Silver Serpent flew to the planet and had pointed to.
Life was good. Life was happy, even!
Those were words Logan had never thought he would have been able to truthfully say, not when he was back on earth. But now? Now, in space- which had seemed like a far off dream- Logan could truly say he was happy.
What is etrm Pre-Market - A Brief Overview ?
What is etrm Pre-Market - A Brief Overview ?
ERM stands for Enterprise Resource Planning and is a financial tool that helps businesses track their costs and performance as well as prepare an ERM model for planning and execution. Large corporations can reap rewards from such tools, since they help them measure their business processes, identify bottlenecks, and set relevant goals. They also help companies save money through increased productivity, reduction of waste, and by helping businesses reduce their dependence on external resources. Smaller companies can also reap benefits from ERM software by saving costs by avoiding over investment in purchasing additional products and services and improving their profit margins through increased customer satisfaction. Many find that these benefits outweigh the price of purchasing ERM software.
Smaller businesses must carefully consider which market players to partner with before investing in ERM software. The list of potential market players is long and includes almost every business type and size from fast food franchises to engineering firms. Often, the first step is to determine what type of ERM system best suits the target market. This involves identifying what type of product or service the company provides, what its major components are, and how its management plans to utilize the ERM software. Many factors go into this analysis; however, the three most critical factors include market size, sector size, and competitive advantage.
Market size is the size of the market in terms of square footage. This value is calculated based on current sales and net revenue. To calculate market size, a company divides the gross revenues it earns per year by the total number of sales it reports each quarter. For instance, if a company earns $500 million in revenue in a quarter and reports five hundred thousand dollars of sales per quarter, it would calculate its etrm pre-market share size at six percent.
Sector size refers to the specific type of business a firm operates. Small firms typically have smaller sales volume while mid-size and large firms have larger sales volume. In addition, there are specialized firms such as finance or real estate. Real estate firms typically operate in one geographic location while finance firms tend to have offices and branches in several countries. Allocating appropriate shares between these different types of firms is important in determining market size and equity value.
Competitiveness refers to the level of competition for any particular share between the various share sellers. The greater the level of competition, the more valuable a share may be. Determining the level of competitiveness requires an assessment of all of the suppliers available to buyers. Some firms specialize in particular areas such as manufacturing while others focus on distribution and logistics. Allocating shares between these different companies will help to ensure that buyers get the best possible price for the shares they purchase.
There are many other factors which affect the etrm the market process. The process only works when firms are willing to enter into a binding agreement to buy and sell stock. If a buyer cannot locate a suitable firm to buy their shares, the whole process of etrm the market can be abandoned.
Mutual Modeling of Futures
I think a lot of the work that human beings are up to is basically about self-representing future states. Schelling talks about what strategy is in The Strategy of Conflict: basically, it’s mutual anticipation. Because your actions (and your future actions) are going to change the environment in which my own decisions and actions exist. That means that if I want to optimize my own future, then I need to anticipate yours.
He calls tacit bargaining a situation where two sides with some conflicting and some mutual interests are playing a variable sum game and they act on the basis of what they think the other party is going to do, which is in turn influenced by what the other party does, and so on recursively. A classic example is Rock-Paper-Scissors:
I played rock last move, so they know I know I’m not going to play rock again, because I lost last turn. So they know not to use paper. They’re going to play either rock or scissors. And then, obviously, if that’s a common pattern, I’m going to think about how you might be thinking that’s the strategy I’ll take, etc.
This is commonplace in everyday strategy games, it’s basically just predictive processing meets theory of mind.
Say person A and person B are walking down the sidewalk in opposite directions, approaching each other on a narrow path. They’re definitely going run into each other soon if they keep walking forward. One strategy is to “perform obliviousness”, as Kenneth Liberman calls it. (We might also think of it as "performing dominance" or expressing a strong preference for non-adjustment.) You basically act as if you don’t know or care I’m there, you’re not changing course. If person A is performing obliviousness, then person B can say “You know what, I know what your path is. Let me just slip to the side and then we’re both fine, we won’t run into each other.” But as soon as you get into the more recursive modeling, e.g. Person A looks at Person B while they’re still thinking and thinks: “Wait, is Person B also performing obliviousness?” and decides to be more reactive, then you end-up in this weird side-to-side shuffle. For instance, you’re ten yards apart, you’re both going back and forth horizontally, getting in each others’ way. It’s in both your interests to get out of each others’s way, but it’s in each of your interest to not move or to move the least. Lot’s of reasons that might be—laziness, energy expenditure minimization, or even status games.
What this comes down to is that Person A, who’s performing obliviousness, is broadcasting a self-representation of a future state. Doing this allows other agents to organize around them, to coordinate more effectively.
A similar example is playing “Chicken”. Let’s say you’re driving towards another car, betting on who’s going to turn away first. If you throw your steering wheel out the window or spray paint over your windshield in advance, there is no way to steer or react in time, respectively. You’ve self-bound to a course of action. Your opponent no longer has a choice, if they don’t turn away, the two cars will crash. You know that your opponent is a rational agent, or at least rational enough to want to live. So you’ve won. Your opponent has to get out of the way, because they know for a fact that you won’t. It’s better for them to lose face then run into you and die. You’ve established a single Schelling point, a single outcome the system will coordinate to if no further communication or changes can take place.
I create this self-representation, I broadcast it, and then we optimize around a shared future reality that I’ve created. Problems emerge because humans can represent one way and act another way. There’s nothing inherently binding about language. I think that’s really interesting—it’s what optikratics and self-deception is all about.
When you throw your steering wheel out the window, you’ve self-bound. There’s a physical limitation on what you can do now. If the other person driving towards you can see that self-binding of futures then they know you just can’t make another decision, even if it would rational, even if it would be better for you to get out of the way at the very last second. You can’t make the decision anymore. You’ve said: I win or bust.
You’re essentially making a tradeoff: I’m going to sacrifice some still good, but not quite optimal futures, like veering away first in the game of Chicken. I’m going to throw my steering wheel out the window and sacrifice these not-bad futures, for the most optimal future: the one where I win and don’t die. You can put all your eggs in one basket, put all your resources into achieving the optimal outcome. But problems emerge: you can represent things one way, but act in another. Consider the theatrical effect of throwing out a dummy steering wheel and making sure the real one wasn’t visible through a heavily tinted windshield.
Schelling talks about how different it would be if you had a society where you could linguistically invoke an oath, e.g. to God. Imagine a society full of perfectly rational, hell-fearing individuals. Invoking an oath to God is perfectly binding because nothing is worse than an eternity of damnation. In such a society there’d be no such thing as boring. I’d say “I swear to God, I won’t pay more than $16k for this car.” Now the salesman can take it or leave it. Normally, there’s a whole range. Let’s say the car costs the salesman $12k wholesale. Let’s say it’s worth $20k to me. So any sale between $12k and $20k is going to be mutually beneficial—kind of like getting out of the way in Chicken. It’s a positive sum game, so it’s better to negotiate than stalemate. A stalemate here would mean the seller doesn’t make any money and I don’t get a car.
Schelling talks about how conflict is not just about conflicting interests, they have a whole base of mutual interests and then some conflicting interests. Other than wars of total annihilation, there’s no such thing as pure conflict. In this case it’s clear: the seller wants money and the buyer (me), wants a car. For anything between $12k and $20k there’s mutual interest, but the settling point of the negotiation has a lot to do with bargaining power. If one party considers the other rational, then they have to somehow convince the other party that they won’t go lower or higher. If the seller thinks they’re dealing with a rational buyer, who’s interest it is to buy at $12k, then the seller has to somehow convince the buyer that he won’t go that low. The buyer has to show that he won’t buy at $20k even though it’s still in his interests, in order to get the best deal possible. In essence, you’re approximating the swear-on-God technology that would allow you demonstrate you won’t buy at a given price.
This makes me think about Blockchain, because Blockchain smart contracts are a form of self-binding. Without Blockchain, though, I can still go to a 3rd-party and say “Hey, if I pay more than $16k for the car, then I’m going to owe you $10k.” and sign a formal legal document to this effect. You bring a copy of your little legal agreement to the car seller, with the proper documentation to confirm its legal authority. Now the seller has to basically take $16k or leave it. (Note that we’re assuming there aren’t any other buyers in this ideal situation.) Basically, the seller is going to take the $16k unless he’s got more than $16k worth of spite, because he has perfect evidence that you’re not going to go higher than that. (If he’s got more than $16k worth of spite he’ll tell you to fuck-off with your fancy third-party leveraging strategies.)
I think a lot of human behavior comes down to this self-legibilizing process. The way you dress, the way you behave, the patterns of conversation you engage in all assert this. We think of manipulation as distorting someone’s priors so they’ll act a certain way. You could also distort their values, but values are harder to budge than priors in general. Values often exist independent of facts and are usually ingrained. It’s much easier to say “You thought these guys were the good guys, but they screwed you over, and I’m going to exploit your already-existing belief in Justice.” The general background notion of justice we often lay-claim to is likely just biological priors that were selected for certain kinds of cooperation.
A lot of manipulation happens by distorting someone’s impression of you. An impression is just a sense of how someone is going to behave. If you have a sense of how someone else is going to behave, then you can say, “You know what, I can behave this way, which has consequence X for the other party, because I know they’re not going to get too mad at me. Or they’re not going to burn the bridge. Or they’re going to be fair about it if I present them with this problem.” For example, if you know how mad a landlord will get with you for a breaking a certain rule, that influences if (or how often) you might choose to break it.
We constantly want to do things that rely on predicting the behaviors of others. I want to know that you’re going to wire me back this money, because you really are an exotic prince who just happens to be in a really bad situation. That’s a dramatic example, but the world is full of examples where manipulation matters: our sidewalk example from earlier, negotiating salaries, or even micro-behaviors like doing the dishes. You do the dishes because you think it’ll strain the relationship between you and your roommate if you don’t. If your roommate gets upset regularly then their actions create a model in your head of how they’re going to act that can be strategically deployed. Knowing that in the future your roommate is going to get mad if you don’t do the dishes means it’s now in your interest to do the dishes, or that you can use them as payback if revenge is what you’re after.
Human beings communicate & coordinate by self-legibilizing. The self-representation of properties that are predictive of the future is key to stabilizing this dynamic (and often recursive) mutual-modeling process, which is the essence of social dynamics.
Examining The Evidence
When it comes to purchasing a mattress, it is only natural to want the best quality and value for your money. Linenspa mattresses have gained popularity in recent years due to their affordable prices and promising features. However, if you have heard rumors about fiberglass being present in Linenspa mattresses, it is important to separate fact from fiction. In this article, we will examine the evidence surrounding this claim and provide you with a clear understanding of the truth. Analyzing Product Composition And Materials Before delving into the presence of fiberglass in Linenspa mattresses, it is crucial to analyze the product composition and materials. Linenspa mattresses are known for their hybrid design, which combines layers of foam and innerspring coils to offer both comfort and support. The specific components used in the construction of these mattresses are carefully selected to meet industry standards and ensure customer satisfaction. According to Linenspa's official website, the outer cover of their mattresses is made from a polyester fabric blend. This fabric is chosen for its softness, durability, and ability to regulate temperature. As for the inner layers, Linenspa incorporates memory foam, gel-infused memory foam, and high-density support foam. These materials work together to provide pressure relief and promote a restful sleep experience. Testing Methodologies And Results When it comes to testing the safety and quality of mattresses, various reputable organizations employ rigorous methodologies to assess their properties. In the case of Linenspa mattresses, independent testing has been conducted to determine if fiberglass is present in the product. One such test is the "cigarette resistance test," where a burning cigarette is brought into contact with the mattress cover. If the mattress contains fiberglass, it will melt and produce smoke or emit a distinct odor. However, the results of multiple tests conducted on Linenspa mattresses have consistently shown no evidence of fiberglass presence, ensuring peace of mind for consumers. Expert Opinions Additionally, it is essential to consider the opinions of experts in the field when evaluating claims about fiberglass in Linenspa mattresses. Industry experts, including mattress reviewers and orthopedic specialists, have extensively examined the construction and materials used in Linenspa mattresses. Based on their expertise and analysis, these professionals have affirmed that Linenspa mattresses do not contain fiberglass in either the cover or the inner layers. Their evaluations provide further reassurance to potential buyers that Linenspa mattresses are a safe and reliable option. In conclusion, the evidence clearly suggests that Linenspa mattresses do not have fiberglass in their composition. Through a thorough analysis of the product's composition, independent testing results, and expert opinions, it is evident that these mattresses are free from any hazardous materials. Therefore, if you have been considering purchasing a Linenspa mattress, you can rest assured knowing that fiberglass is not something you need to worry about.
Ensuring Safety And Transparency
Regulations And Standards For Mattress Safety When it comes to purchasing a new mattress, safety should always be a top priority. It's important to understand the regulations and standards that govern mattress safety in order to make an informed decision. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has set guidelines and regulations that all mattresses must comply with to ensure consumer safety. These regulations include requirements for flammability, chemical emissions, and labeling. When it comes to flammability, mattresses must meet the Federal Flammability Standard (16 CFR Part 1633), which sets out the testing procedures and performance requirements that mattresses must meet. This standard aims to reduce the risk of fire and related injuries resulting from mattresses catching fire. In addition to flammability, mattresses are also subject to regulations regarding chemical emissions. The CPSC, in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has developed the Voluntary Product Standard (16 CFR Part 1303) for chemical emissions from mattresses. This standard limits the amount of potentially harmful chemicals that can be released from the mattress into the air, ensuring a healthier sleeping environment. Labeling is also an important aspect of mattress safety. Manufacturers are required to provide clear and accurate labeling on their mattresses to help consumers make informed decisions. This includes information such as the type of materials used, compliance with safety standards, and warranty details. Transparency In Mattress Labeling And Disclosures Transparency is crucial when it comes to mattress labeling and disclosures. Consumers have the right to know exactly what they are purchasing and what materials are used in the construction of their mattresses. With the rise of online shopping, it's become even more important for mattress manufacturers to provide clear and accurate information about their products. One way manufacturers can ensure transparency is by providing detailed product descriptions on their websites. This should include information about the materials used, certifications obtained, and compliance with safety standards. It's also important for manufacturers to disclose if their mattresses contain any potential allergens or hazardous materials. In addition to product descriptions, manufacturers should also provide independent third-party certifications to validate their claims. Certifications such as CertiPUR-US® and GREENGUARD Gold can provide reassurance that the mattress has been tested and meets certain safety and environmental standards. Best Practices For Consumer Awareness Consumer awareness is key to making an informed decision when purchasing a mattress. By following some best practices, consumers can ensure they are choosing a safe and transparent product. One of the first steps is to research and compare different mattress brands and models. Look for reliable sources of information such as independent reviews, industry publications, and consumer advocacy websites. These sources can provide valuable insights into the safety and quality of different mattresses. When researching, pay close attention to the materials used in the mattresses. Look for certifications and disclosures that validate the safety and transparency of the product. Avoid mattresses that have questionable or vague labeling. Finally, don't be afraid to reach out to the manufacturer directly if you have any questions or concerns. Reputable companies will be transparent and responsive to consumer inquiries. Remember, your safety and satisfaction are paramount when shopping for a new mattress.
Safety Tips While You Rent Your Products
1. DECIDING RENT
The first step is to decide the correct rent amount. It is crucial because in such a competitive market you can't ask for more than the market rate. Doing so will put off potential. However, if your products are better maintained and in good condition than that of others, you can charge premium rent from the buyer.
2. PREPARE AGREEMENT
The most important thing after the customer is interested in your product, is to make an agreement. An agreement is a legal document that binds the seller and the buyer to comply with the mutually-agreed conditions. It is the most important document in case of a dispute between the two related to the product. Utmost care should be taken in drafting the document. It should state all terms and conditions clearly to avoid any dispute in the future. One can take the help of a legal expert to draft the agreement.
The following points shall be taken into consideration while preparing agreement:
A] ALL THE PERSONAL INFORMATION OF SELLER AND BUYER SHOULD BE MENTIONED
1. Full name of the person involved in the agreement.
2. Address details.
3. Adhaar card no. for verification.
4. Sellers full information is must
B] RENT AMOUNT AND DATE SHOULD BE MENTIONED CLEARLY.
1. Rent amount
2. Starting date of purchase
3. Ending date of purchase
4. The periods of purchase ( eg. 2 days, 2 weeks,2 months,6 months, etc)
C] MODE OF PAYMENT IS IMPORTANT.
1. Cash
2. Cheque
3. An online transaction like Google pay, Paytm, Amazon pay, etc.
D] SECURITY DEPOSIT
While you are purchasing a product that is huge and has a huge transaction amount the buyer will surely ask for a security deposit. After all, he is renting his product so even he needs to be assured that it is going in right hands or no, sometimes the buyers can also bluff the seller so security deposit is a must.
The security deposit must be standardized, it should be paid via credit card or any online transaction where you have each and every detail to who you have paid. If in case of cheating or bluff you can claim your money back if you have some payment details.
3. USE A SAFE LOCATION TO MEET SELLER
If you are taking on rent any product which has a huge transaction then its better to have one meeting before you decide anything, where you can be sure of the seller and even the product.
A] Skip the shipping, stick to local deals, and meet in person.
B] Meet in a busy, public place like a cafe or bank lobby during the day and
C] Take someone with you before you make a deal
4. BEWARE OF UNREALISTIC OFFERS
If you see huge discounts and offers on big products be sure about that seller, first verify that seller is trustworthy or not, and if you feel it can be trusted then go-ahead for making a deal. Sometimes this unrealistic offers and discounts are spam where they ask you for money transactions, in that case, do make full money transfer, or ask for cash on delivery method.
5. STAY PRIVATE
Please, don’t share any sensitive and personal information that isn’t related to the sale or to the item you’re buying. And most important when you’re buying, always check out the item and make sure everything’s just as you expected.
If it’s electronic like a computer, phone, turn it on to make sure it works. If it’s furniture like sofa, beds, and wardrobes check it that it doesn’t contain and stain or breakage. When you’re selling, take a moment to count and inspect the money. (Accept cash, don’t accept gift cards, wire transfers, or personal cheques.
Next, I began to check the walls for hidden panels or the like. The walls of the parlor, sitting room, and kitchen were smooth with elaborate flocked paper. The wainscots were all of solid, if elaborate, woodwork. That left the study, dining room, and library. I set eagerly to work. The paneled walls of the study proved depressingly solid.
I was delighted when I finally found the basement stair in the library. A bookcase camouflaged a hidden door with the spring catch concealed as one of the few knots visible anywhere in the wood of the house.
Flashlight in hand, I ventured down the short flight of stairs. The basement proved to be small and bare. It had mortared stone walls and a cement floor. There were no hiding places, even the space under the stairs was empty, no rats, no dust, and no cobwebs … Slowly I went back up the stairs to the library.
I put away my flashlight and went to the study to look at the land records again. The papers revealed that the house’s first buyer was George Oates. His brother and sole heir sold the house seven years later. His name was Harold.
As I am something of a bibliophile, I decided to give the house’s library a detailed look. I was more than pleasantly surprised. Not one book was published later than 1866. Many were far older. Some of the books went back to the 1400’s. Mr. Wickes was apparently somewhat dishonest, intellectually. He had signed and dated the flyleaf of each book, for example, “Hiram Wickes, acquir’d 1565.” Some of the dates went back to 1540 in books published from 1483 to 1497. He would have to have been over 300 years old, if the inscriptions were true.
Hiram was heavily into the occult. There was little that did not pertain to the various occult ‘sciences.’ Even the books in foreign tongues, and there were many, had illustrations that indicated that they belonged to this awesome collection of lore. The impression was that Hiram had read all or most of this collection. His marginal notes were in a wide range of languages, often not the language of the book in question. From scanning the shelves, I deduced that there were over twenty five hundred books in the library.
My near drenching of the day before had taught me that it was wise to take my car into town. Mrs. Alderman greeted me at the slightly shabby old counter that served the library for a check-out desk. “My goodness, young man, how did you get on when the power went out? I have a gas range, ‘cause you never can tell when, hereabouts, the power might go.”
“I’ve got gas where I’m staying, too,” I told her, “I made out okay.”
“Well,” she said knowingly, “the radio says it’ll be another two-three hours before we got power again. Why don’t you go sit by that window? It’ll give you light all morning.”
I thanked her and turned at once to the death certificates. Bingo! George Oates, his wife Wilfreda, daughters - Caroline and Charity, and son Harold (named for George’s brother in Boston), had all been declared legally dead, seven years having passed since their disappearance, and all reasonable attempts at contact having failed. Now, the reason for that malevolent plaque came into focus.
Turning to the letters, I started with the earliest. The Post Office had saved Hiram’s mail in the hope that it would yield some clue to his whereabouts. This practice was followed in the disappearance of all subsequent owners of the house. Hiram’s mail was of considerable interest to any who might know a bit of the occult and something of rare books, as I did. The first letter follows:
My Dear Hiram:
It is with the utmost concern that I read your last communication. You were always my most talented pupil and are a valued associate. I pray you, please, reconsider the rash course that you are now contemplating.
Remember, your copy of Alhazarad is not a good one. The edition of 1784 contains many minor lacunae. Before you attempt anything, consult also the Pnakotic Manuscripts and collate what you learn there with Von Junst.
I know that reading the Pnakotic Manuscripts is a difficult and time-consuming task. Never forget that the source of your present wealth and mine lies in those ancient pages. There is much wisdom there for those with the courage to seek. Everything must be checked against other knowledge.
To call upon Him Whose Name Must NOT be Uttered for so trivial a task is a sure way to serious mishap. Remember, your Alhazarad is incomplete!
In concern for your welfare,
I remain, Richten
At Darkhouse, Arkham, Mass.
Unfortunately, the authorities were unable to trace the mysterious Richten or his address. Arkham, Mass. is, of course well known to all scholars and bibliophiles as the home of Miskatonic University, with its astounding collection of rare books of occult lore.
I had never heard of the Pnakotic Manuscripts but the other items mentioned in the letter were familiar to me. Alhazarad could be none other than the author of the infamous Necronomicon. The 1784 edition survives only as a fragmentary copy in the vaults of Miskatonic University. Von Junst could only be the almost as infamous Black Book. This book also survives in only a few priceless copies. Two of the best ones lurked in the vaults of the rare book collection at Miskatonic. They were separate editions, published a century apart.
Another letter, about a week later than the first, was a bit more specific. Richten started in much the same vein as before but went on:
Calling so mighty a being for so trivial a task is absolutely insane. I know that you enjoy tidiness. Who does not? Yet He Whose Name Must NOT be Uttered is not a mere servant and can be disastrously literal, even when all else is done perfectly.
Binding Him, as you have, cannot please Him. What you have learned from the Necronomicon and the Pnakotic Manuscripts has enabled you to compel Him to bring you gold. The first time that He did was almost fatal. Remember, being able to compel is not the same as being master.
For your own safety, Do Not Do This!!!
Wishing you the best,
Your friend and former Master,
Richten
At Darkhouse, Arkham, Mass.
There were also, unfortunately, not translated, letters from Korea, China, India, the 0ttoman Empire, Germany, France, Morocco, and several places in South America. Apparently our Mr. Wickes had been something of a polyglot and did in fact read all of the languages of the books in his library.
It appeared that a careful search of the house, attic to basement, was in order. If there were any chance that I might find a copy of either the Necronomicon or the Black Book, I could turn a fine profit. Either book in almost any condition, was worth in far in excess of mere $45,000.00 that I had paid for the house.
Turning to the newspaper clippings, I found mostly stories of the disappearances of people who had bought the Wickes place. The George Oates family was only the first. They were not alone. The clippings gave some flesh to the legal death declarations. There was another detail to add to my list. No trace was ever found of the possessions of any person who vanished.
Electric wiring had been installed. Several times. It too had vanished without a trace. After each disappearance, the house was exactly as it had been when Hiram Wickes vanished. Even if the furniture and books were sold or even burned, everything always came back.
The Reverend Orville Olson piled all of Hiram’s books and furniture on the lawn and burned it all. He then exorcised the whole place of the “evil ghost of Hiram Wickes.” To prove that the evil was gone, he spent the night in the house. The burn scar on the lawn and the Reverend Olson both vanished. The furniture and books returned.
I made careful tracings of the strange gold coin in the file and made longhand copies of such of the letters as I could and included all of the oddments that I knew of Hiram Wickes and the Wickes house, and prepared the lot for mailing. I addressed it to Professor Gordon Wetherbee at Miskatonic University.
He was a sort ‘uncle’ to me. He and my father had been close friends since long before my birth. That friendship had been extended to me as I grew and was largely responsible for my love of books and learning. I did not know all or even a fraction of what ‘uncle’ Gordon knew or did but I trusted him absolutely.
I did know that his research had taken him all over the world. He knew more of the occult than any other man of my acquaintance.
One set of clippings caught my eye. “BOY GOES MAD!!” Curiosity piqued, I read on. In essence, the story was this:
It was a fine day in April, 1896. Willie Asphel, age 10, was in the mood to get into trouble. He sneaked off to the Wickes place to break windows. Apparently he missed the house with the first stone, as there was no crash of glass or thump of stone on board. He took precise aim and watched carefully where the stone went. Ever after, his hair was stark white, his eyes crossed, and even after he stopped raving, his mind was never fully normal. He demonstrated a talent for seeing into closed containers and the like.
He died of a brain hemorrhage at the age of fifteen.
The power which had failed last night, came back at 3:30 p.m. I felt a need to digest the tale of Reverend Olson and young Willie Asphel, so I left the library. I walked up the street in the sunlight. Cobbles could be seen here and there through old cracks and holes in the paving. Stepping around the occasional weed, I followed the sidewalk to the Post Office. There I mailed my letter to uncle Gordon.
Thoughtfully, I retraced my steps. My car awaited me. No sooner had I got into it than a gust of wind slammed the door. The impact caused the glove box door to fall open. Inside were five gold coins exactly like the one in the file
To say that I was stunned by this occurrence would have been an understatement. A breeze plucked at my right hand, almost as if it were guiding me to the gold. The moment that I took the gold in my hand, the breeze died away. Only then did I notice that my car windows were closed.
My first response was to say, “Thank you, whoever or whatever you may be.” I drove home slowly, mulling over the day’s events. The clouds roiled overhead like fighting dogs.
Once home, I got my flashlight and went straight to the attic. At the stairs, my light would not shine. Somehow, I must have left it on when I last put it away. Irritating.
I had lots of candles down in the kitchen. For a prize like the Necronomicon or the Black Book, I could search by candlelight. An obsession to find those books seized my spirit.
I hurried down to the kitchen and set up a candlestick, which I took back to the attic. The soft glow of the candlelight revealed the same boxes and trunks that I had seen before. There were still no dust or spider webs to be seen. I heard what sounded like a hundred rats on the floor below. A glance out an attic window showed that night had fallen. The ‘spectral brigade’ never started before dark.
The boxes and trunks contained the curios, mementos and journals of travels on six of the seven continents (only Antarctica was not represented.) Glancing through the journals revealed that although Hiram was meticulous at recording detail and observations, he was also quite secretive about the object of his searches and research. It was both fascinating and frustrating.
Some of the boxes contained disturbingly carved stones and other artifacts. Many of these were only disquieting to look at but a few were truly mind twisting. A number of the journals contained finely drawn sketches in ink of architecture that Escher would have loved, had it not caused actual nausea when studied too closely. Many of the drawings were of ruins but they still retained their otherworldly power. Their geometry was subtly skewed from any earthly construction. There was little else, aside from literally thousands of the above mentioned journals. Valuable to the right collector perhaps but not the precious books that I was seeking.
I tried the second floor next. Both bedrooms, the bath, and the large room that I had dubbed ‘the work room’ all proved to have no secret hiding places. If there were any hidden doors or concealed panels they defied me.
The ground floor was next. I started with the kitchen. The parlor got a once-over walls and ceiling. (I had done the floor when I searched for the basement.) The same was done with the dining room, sitting room, and study. Then it was the library’s turn.
Looking at the wall to wall, knee to ceiling, cases of books with their sliding ladders, I despaired of finishing my search that night. There were over twenty five hundred volumes on those shelves.
I stared at the sea of brown leather backs, some stamped with gold, and decided to start at the right of the door and work my way around the room. Each book had to be inspected to be sure that it was not concealing another book in innocent appearing binding. Many of them were valuable in their own right but none could compare with the Necronomicon or the Black Book.
I did not get far before I was too tired to continue. The books that I was seeking had waited for century and a third. They could wait until morning.
The next day, my inspection of the library resumed. Here, at least, Hiram had achieved order. The books were shelved by subject and author, regardless of language. There was precious little of outright fiction though many were obvious foolishness in the light of modern knowledge. At ten in the morning, I stopped, arms aching and eyes swimming. I was less than a quarter of the way through the herculean task.
