Researching Hacking Cases
Raphael Gray
What was this case about?
Raphael Gray is a computer hacker who, at the age of 19, hacked computer systems around the world over a period of six weeks between January and February 1999 as part of a multi-million pound credit card mission. He then proceeded to publish credit card details of over 6,500 cards as an example of weak security in the growing number of consumer websites.
Who were the protagonists and parties involved?
There were no protagonists involved. He was just relying on his 800 computer he brought in his home. He broke the security systems of credit cards and published. The parties involved were the law enforcers which he insulted and then arrested him and his tracker Chris Davis.
Did any prosecutions result?
There were no results done by prosecutors.
If so, what were their outcomes?
Raphael was arrested at his home on the 23 March 2000. Police and FBI agents arrived in the early hours of the morning. It was alleged that he had intruded into nine e-commerce websites in Britain, America, Canada, Thailand and Japan and taken details of some 26,000 credit card numbers and disclosed some of the credit card information on the Internet.
What ethical issues are raised by this case?
The ethical issue of this case was Raphael intention was to make the users of the e-commerce site to be aware that credit card or personal information that they entered in that site is vulnerable of hacking, and can be used with anyone who has a bad intention. However, through this, Raphael Gray also violated the UK Computer Misuse acts, when he exposed this credit card numbers and information in the public. At first place, Raphael's intention was good but to the owner of the e-commerce sites and the owner of those credit cards would say that his act is unethical because he make an unauthorized access to this information.

Master of Deception
What was this case about?
Masters of Deception (MOD) hacked majority of the telephone lines of RBOC’s and X.25 networks. MOD’s initial membership grew from meetings on Loop-Around Test Lines that led to legendary collaborations to hack RBOC phone switches and the various minicomputers and mainframes used to administer the telephone network. They successfully remained underground using alternative handles to hide even their true hacker identities.
Who were the protagonists and parties involved?
The original Masters of Deception included: Mark Abene ("Phiber Optik"), Paul Stira ("Scorpion"), Eli Ladopoulos ("Acid Phreak"), HAC, John Lee("Corrupt" a.k.a. "Netw1z") and Julio Fernandez ("Outlaw"). Additional members whose real names are unknown include: Supernigger (also of DPAK), Wing, Nynex Phreak, Billy_The_Kid, Crazy Eddie, The Plague, ZOD, Seeker, Red Knight (who was also a member of Cult of the Dead Cow), Lord Micro, n00gie and peaboy (aka, MCI Sprinter).
Did any prosecutions result? If so, what were their outcomes?
As a result of a major nationwide investigation by a joint FBI/Secret Service task force, five of MOD's members were indicted in 1992 in federal court. The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stephen Fishbein and Geoffrey S. Berman. Within the next six months (in 1993), all five pleaded guilty and were sentenced to either probation or prison. After the sentencing of Abene, 2600: The Hacker Quarterly, Winter 1993-94, had on its cover a rag doll labeled "BERMAN" stabbed by a dagger.
What ethical issues are raised by this case?
The ethical issues in this case involves every issue in hacking. You cannot deny that you are the hacker. And you cannot avoid the war between the two groups of hacker. Although The Hacker Manifesto states that, “The only crime a hacker commits is the crime of curiosity.” Hacking is a serious crime, It is more the “unauthorized access and modification of the data there in” which is regulated by laws rather than the act of ‘hacking’ which in short , means “writing the code in an unauthorized way”.

Masters of Deception (MOD)
Tumblr media
MOD  to those who don’t know or heard of it is one of the legendary hacking cases of the 20th century.
What was this case about?
Based on SlideShare, “they are a New York-based group of hackers, most widely known in media for their exploits of telephone company infrastructure and later prosecution, as well as being the subject of the book “Masters of Deception: The Gang That Ruled Cyberspace”. MODs initial membership grew from meetings on Loop-Around Test Lines that led to legendary collaborations to hack RBOC phone switches and the various minicomputers and mainframes used to administer the telephone network. Furthermore, they successfully remained underground using alternative handles to hide even their true hacker identities”.
“Generally, Acid Phreak founded the Masters of Deception with Scorpion and HAC. The name itself was, among other things, a mockery of LoD, as M is one letter up in the alphabet from L, although the name originally was a flexible acronym that could be used to identify membership in situations where anonymity would be the best course of action. It could stand for "Millions of Dollars" just as easily as "Masters of Deception"”
“It is claimed that the mockery of the LOD name was a statement to the underground that LOD had lost its direction. Several LOD members were close friends of MOD who had been raided and indicted by the government, causing the majority of those who remained to drop out of the underground for safety reasons. In their absence, LOD largely fell into disarray causing the disagreement and disillusionment that led Phiber Optik to align himself with MOD in an effort to restore the direction of the spirit of underground hacking.”
The conflict between the (MOD), Masters of Deception and (LOD), Legion of Doom was marked as the Great Hacker War during the year 1990 - 1992.  On the other hand, the identities of these hackers are listed below.
Who were the protagonists and parties involved?
The original Masters of Deception:
Mark Abene ("Phiber Optik")  Paul Stira ("Scorpion")  Eli Ladopoulos ("Acid Phreak"),  HAC John Lee("Corrupt" a.k.a. "Netw1z")  Julio Fernandez ("Outlaw")
Nonetheless, the additional members whose real names are unknown include:
Supernigger (also of DPAK), Wing, Nynex Phreak, Billy_The_Kid, Crazy Eddie, The Plague, ZOD, Seeker, Red Knight (who was also a member of Cult of the Dead Cow), Lord Micro, n00gie and peaboy (aka, MCI Sprinter)

Did any prosecutions result? If so, what were their outcomes?
Yes it did. With their identities revealed, as a result of a major nation wide investigation by a joint FBI/Secret Service task force, five of MOD’s members were indicted in 1992 in federal court. Within the next six months (in 1993), all five pleaded guilty and were sentenced to either probation or prison.
What ethical issues are raised by this case?
The ethical issues in this case involves every issue in hacking. First, you cannot deny that you are the hacker and that you cannot avoid the war between the two hacking groups. Second, although the Hacker Manifesto states that, “The only crime a hacker commits is the crime of curiosity.” Hacking by all means is a serious crime and who whoever does this kind of activity is punishable by the law. Lastly, it is more like the “unauthorized access and modification of the data there in” which is regulated by the law rather than the act of “hacking” which in simple words, means “writing the code in an unauthorized way”.
