Hi, you seem very good at research.

If this is interesting to you, could you help me find some differential diagnoses / explanations for autistic catatonia? It seems to fit me as a mild version but this is a necessary part of my research process and there's not a ton of information about it so now I have to do networking /lh.

Why I'm looking into this: what I had labeled as a shutdown usually includes being completely unable to move at all, even looking around. This only happens when I'm very upset, but I can also get into a less intense version where I have to intentionally do every small movement and only 1 limb at a time. I get stuck in thresholds like doorways or stairs. I also appear to be getting to a higher support needs level. I can't speak full sentences for whole days now or can't talk at all more often. making myself do tasks is much harder than it used to be, to where I can't go anywhere alone or into stores at all and I barely ever do hygiene beyond wearing deodorant or art projects and I only feed myself fruit.

I’ve never heard of autistic Catatonia. So I went to search around. I found some information about it from the National Autistic Society that states.

Catatonia is a complex neuro-psychological disorder which refers to a cluster of abnormalities in movement, volition, speech and behaviour. Historically, the term catatonia has been associated with schizophrenia and psychoses, but it is now recognised that it can occur with a range of conditions.

Catatonia in varying degrees can occur in autistic children and adults. Studies suggest that between 12-18% of autistic people may present with varying levels of catatonia (Wing & Shah, 2000; Billstedt et al. 2005; Ghaziuddin et al, 2012). However, actual prevalence is likely to be higher as there are probably a lot more people with autism and catatonia who do not have a diagnosis and are not known to services.

In particular, catatonia-like breakdown should be considered as a possible diagnosis for any autistic individual who shows a marked and obvious deterioration in:

movement

volition

level of activity

speech

a regression in self-care, practical skills and independence compared to previous levels.

Specific indicators of an onset of catatonia type breakdown may include any of the following:

increased slowness

freezing during actions

increase in repetitive movements and hesitations

difficulty in crossing thresholds and completing movements

marked reduction in speech or complete mutism

difficulty in initiating and inhibition of actions

increased reliance on physical or verbal prompts for functioning

increase in repetitive and ritualistic behaviours

getting locked in postures
