Movie Review | Sister, Sister (Condon, 1987)
Tumblr media
This review contains spoilers.
This is worth watching for some nice, swampy Southern Gothic mood and for the compellingly realized relationship between the titular sisters Jennifer Jason Leigh and Judith Ivey (helped in large part by the excellent performances from both actresses). But at the same time, it does feel like the "lite" version of a better movie with the same premise and the same raw materials. The milieu carries a certain atmosphere but never feels as decayed as one would hope. There are definite slasher movie influences, from some of the murder sequences and use of ambiguous POV camerawork, as well as some last minute scares, but the movie seems to keep them at arm's length.
The casting of Leigh and Ivey is interesting because, aside from the strength of their acting, they resemble each other a fair bit, and in particular, Ivey looks older, like she could be Leigh's mother. This figures into their relationship dynamics at a certain level, but never feels fully followed through on. I can imagine a version of this movie having been made by an Italian giallo director that would deliver on the perverse, violent possibilities of the material like this never does. It in fact does feel like Bill Condon was influenced by giallo, particularly in the way it tries to dissolve the barriers between the characters' headspace and the literal narrative, but again, his heart isn't in it.
I was also chewing over the casting of Eric Stoltz over the course of the movie and have mixed feelings. On one hand, he's clearly meant to be a softer, more affectionate alternative to the more forceful, base masculinity of Benjamin Mouton, so that we understand why Leigh might go for him. But at the same time, he's too bland, too lacking in presence to be the destabilizing force in the sisters' relationship that the movie needs him to be. It's hard to imagine Ivey wanting to protect Leigh from him because it's hard to imagine Ivey perceiving him as a threat. Which I suppose is somewhat intentional, because it is a bit of a surprise when he's revealed to be the killer and avenging past wrongs. But even then, I do not see the necessary derangement, the necessary hatefulness in his eyes.
I do think recasting the part would improve the movie a fair bit. As for whom, I'm open to suggestions. The obvious answer is James Spader, but he's been in too many of these kinds of things so let's put him aside. I was initially thinking someone along the lines of Mickey Rourke or Michael Rooker, both of whom have enough masculine presence to prove attractive to the heroine, but perhaps their capacity for violence would not be much of a surprise. On the other hand, somebody like Kyle Maclachlan would be white bread enough to not telegraph his intentions, but also with enough of an edge to keep you on your toes. Or maybe '80s Nicolas Cage, before the memeification, someone who could play a romantic lead but with enough of an instability to balance the different sides of the performance. Let's go with Cage, it's not like he'd turn it down.

A team of engineers prepares to integrate TRIDENT – short for The Regolith Ice Drill for Exploring New Terrain – into the belly of NASA’s first robotic Moon rover, VIPER – short for the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover. NASA/Bill Stafford A team of engineers prepares to integrate TRIDENT – short for The Regolith Ice Drill for Exploring New Terrain – into the belly of NASA’s first robotic Moon rover, VIPER (Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover).  TRIDENT, designed and developed by engineers at Honeybee Robotics in Altadena, California, is the fourth and final science instrument to be installed into VIPER. NASA engineers have already successfully integrated VIPER’s three other science instruments into the rover. These include: the MSOLO (Mass Spectrometer Observing Lunar Operations), NIRVSS (Near-Infrared Volatiles Spectrometer System), and NSS (Neutron Spectrometer System).  Shortly after TRIDENT was integrated in the clean room at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, the team also successfully tested its ability to power on, release the locks that hold the drill in place during launch, extend to its full depth of more than three feet (one meter), perform percussive drilling, and return to its stowed position inside the rover. TRIDENT will dig up soil from below the lunar surface using a rotary percussive drill – meaning it both spins to cut into the ground and hammers to fragment hard material for more energy-efficient drilling. In addition to being able to measure the strength and compactedness of the lunar soil, the drill also carries a temperature sensor to take readings below the surface. VIPER will launch to the Moon aboard Astrobotic’s Griffin lunar lander on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket as part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative. It will reach its destination at Mons Mouton near the Moon’s South Pole. Scientists will work with these four instruments to better understand the origin of water and other resources on the Moon, which could support human exploration as part of NASA’s Artemis campaign.

Catawiki Auction site offers items from archivist Chris Mouton, British comic art and more
The latest weekly Catawiki International Comic Art Auction feels a bit like “Groundhog Day” in terms of British comic art on offer, but they should definitely interest Modesty Blaise and, of course, Robot Archie fans. Of wider interest to collectors, and well worth checking out, and not just in this auction on the site, are items from the Chris Mouton (1965-2020), whose art and comic collection

French words of Gaulish origin
Gaulish was a continental Celtic language spoken in Gaul until its extinction around the 6th century AD. However, many words of Gaulish origin survive in French!
BĂ©ret (m) – Beret Originally borrowed from Occitan berret itself descended from the Latin birrus (a cloak with a hood), which was derived from Gaulish birrus (a short cloak). The word ultimately traces back to Proto-Celtic *birros meaning short (cognate with Welsh byr and Breton & Cornish berr). BĂ©ret is a diminutive of the Latinsed Gaulish word.
Gober – To swallow whole Borrowed from Gaulish *gobbos which descended from Proto-Celtic *gobbos (snout, beak). Cognate with Irish & Scottish Gaelic gob (beak, bill) and English gob (slang for mouth). This is one of my favourites because any speaker of an English variety which uses the word gob can immediately make the connection here. I love how many cognates there are between French and English which descend either from Proto-Celtic or Proto-Germanic.
Mouton (m) – Sheep / mutton From Old French mouton, from Vulgar Latin moltƍ, which was derived from Gaulish *multon (sheep), ultimately from Proto-Celtic *moltos (sheep). Cognate with English mutton (meat of a sheep), Welsh mollt (ram, mutton), Breton maout (ram) and Galician motóa (sheep).
Ruche (f) – Beehive From Middle French rusche, from Medieval Latin rusca (tree bark, Fr. Ă©corce (f)) which was derived from Gaulish *ruskā from Proto-Celtic *rĆ«skos (bark, beehive). Cognate with Catalan rusc (beehive), Irish rĂșsc (bark) and Welsh rhisgl (bark). I think it’s interesting how this word came to mean beehive in French and Catalan which are both Romance languages, but remained as bark in the Celtic languages. The connection between the two meanings appears to be that due to bees making their hives in hollow, elevated trees, bark was closely associated with bee dwellings/beehives.

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.... That's not a flatline, that's me swearing at this film. Flatliners (1990) #Review
Tumblr media
Nineties with a capital 9, stripped of the rose-coloured shroud of nostalgia, Joel Schumacher’s morbid thriller emphasises the ‘flat’ in “Flatliners”. Inspired by the near-death experiences of patients, a  group of brilliant, ambitious medical students decide to probe beyond the veil to establish empirically what happens when you die. But as each of them become haunted by what they saw, they must

Let’s Talk
Relationship: Charlie and Neville
Rating: Teen and Up
Wordcount: A hair over 1k
Summary: In which Charlie and Neville bond together over tea.
Where else to find it: AO3
The dinner that Molly had made had already been put away into the fridge. The last of the Weasleys had gone outside to take a walk. Neville’s stomach was full but he sat at the dinner table drinking the last bit of tea that Molly had made for all of them. The tea had run cold though it was still good. Only a candle lit his way through the book. His eyes scanning the page for any more information that he hadn’t already absorbed. The door swung shut behind Neville’s back. Neville jolted up and turned back to face the figure standing in the doorway.
“Hey,” Charlie greeted as he brought himself over to the table. He poured himself a cup of tea with a smile and settled into his own routine at the table.
“Couldn’t stand the cold?” Neville didn’t even look up from his book when Charlie first came in but felt obligated now to look up at the man who now sat across from him. “Or just wanted some peace and quiet.”
“Little bit of both.” Charlie sipped a bit of tea. “I got so used to the roar of dragons but I can’t even handle my own family for more than a few hours.”
“I’m not even used to how loud this all is.” Neville laughed.
“I envy that.”
“Envy what?” Neville finally decided to close his book and pay attention to the man. Charlie’s eyes darted down to the book and scanned the spine before they snapped back up to Neville.
“The fact that you’re an only child.” Charlie smiled. “I love all of my siblings but I never had a moment of peace
ever.”
“Maybe that’s why you got really into dragons.”
“I don’t think that was the man reason I got into dragons.” Charlie took another sip of his tea before spitting it out into his cup. “I think I’m going to make another pot. How long has this been sitting here?”
Neville shrugged as he checked his watch for the time. The sun had gone down what seemed like half an hour ago but that didn’t seem right. “At least since supper ended.”
“And that was like an hour or two before we went outside.” Charlie shook his head. “You know you could’ve warmed it up
or used a spell to keep it warm.”
“I wasn’t about to do that.” Neville waved a dismissive hand in the general direction of Charlie. “I got too wrapped up in my book.”
“Haven’t you already finished that one?” Charlie noted as he looked back at Neville. The teapot back on the stove though Neville hadn’t seen Charlie dump out the old water and replace it with new water.
“Yes,” Neville shrugged once more. “I love it. It’s a really good book.”
“So you must really love plants then?” Charlie checked on the pot before he turned back to Neville.
“Yes, I do. I already have a job lined up at Hogwarts once they finish repairs.”
“That’s awesome. I would’ve loved to swing the Care of Magical Creatures job but I don’t think that anyone can replace Hagrid.”
“You think that he will ever retire?” Neville asked as the teapot began to sing.
“No,” Charlie smiled. “I think he’ll stay there forever.”
Charlie poured himself a cup of tea before extending the pot to Neville who made his own cup. The pot sat inbetween the two of them before they fell silent. The two men sipping on their own tea for a few minutes. The voices of the rest of the Weasley family carrying on the wind and through the open windows. The cool air soon aired out most of the house and into the dining room.
“How are the dragons doing?” Neville set his cup down.
“They’re doing amazing.” Charlie set his own cup down onto the table as well. “There are some weird cross species being made by taking some dragons from Romania and Egypt. Bill wants to help oversee that project.”
“That’s awesome. But I think we’re pretty close to getting some new plants in the Herbology department soon. Professor Sprout and I are working on some gillyweed hybrids for out of water uses like for fires and climbing mountains.”
“I wouldn’t mind using some of those for heading up to meet some of the dragons in the moutons too high for us to reach.”
“I could give you some of the prototypes that we’ve been working on if you want. We do need to test them out soon. See if we’re going in the right direction.”
“I would love that!” Charlie beamed as he leaned over and looked out of the window. “Damn, my family must really have needed that walk.”
“I know, the twins took a lot of walks before feasts at school.”
“Smoking the devil’s lettuce I see. Probably broke off as soon as I left to go smoke some more before they go to sleep.” Charlie smiled as he looked over his shoulder at the clock that hung on the wall. It still showed that they were out of the house and on the walk but neither of them could glean where they were. “I’m sure they’re out there somewhere doing something illegal.”
“They’ll never get caught as long as the two of them are together. I’m sure of it.” Charlie let out a small laugh before taking another sip of his tea. “We’re also thinking of harassing the dragon’s fire for personal defense use.”
“So like
just normal fire?”
“Much more hot than normal fire,” Charlie explained as he set down his cup. “And can go a lot longer than normal fire without much oxygen and wood. Not like we’re going to need that kind of stuff for weapons use now. But just in case. Along with just using it for fires.”
Neville nodded, “Especially up in the mountains where there is little to no oxygen.”
“Yes, which is why we need the hybrid gillyweed.”
“Of course, I’ll send an owl to Professor Sprout tonight.”
“Thank you. That would be great.”

Careful
The Bentley is – inasmuch as an inanimate object is able to possess an opinion – terribly besotted with the angel Aziraphale.
Belonging to a demon for nigh-on a century means the Bentley has inherited some of Crowley’s traits – his powers, his thoughts, his feelings.  And now, careening down Oxford Street at a comfortable eighty-seven miles per hour, the Bentley’s engine grumbles, much in the way a heart will skip or flip or perform any other anatomically-improbable acrobatics.
Aziraphale’s grip on the ceiling bar is warm and strong and terrified.  It sends a rush of fondness right down to the combustion chamber and the Bentley puts on an extra burst of speed.  Perhaps, the car thinks, the angel and demon are long-overdue for a little automotive intervention.
“Careful!” Aziraphale cries.  “Pedestrian ahead!  Fourteen-hundred hours!”
The Bentley swerves to avoid said pedestrian – a tiny old woman tottering across the street – and Crowley rolls his eyes, belying the fond rumble of the car engine. “Think you’d be used to this by now,” he remarks.
“Don’t stop me now,” the Bentley chimes in. “Don’t stop me, cause I’m having a good time, having a good time
”
Aziraphale blinks.  “Does it—does it usually do that?”
“Do what?” Crowley asks, snaking past a cluster of tourists.
“Agree with you—”  Aziraphale begins, only to break off in a gasp as they streak past a pair of men bickering on a street corner.  “You could have hit them!”
“Could have.  Didn’t.”
“Really!” the angel huffs.  “If you keep swerving around, I may actually lose my lunch.”
Crowley scoffs.  “You know nausea is just an option for us, angel.”
Aziraphale subsides, lips pursed.  “Well.  My point still stands.”
“You’d never risk the Chñteau Mouton, anyway.”
Aziraphale’s façade of annoyance crumbles under a blissful smile.  “That was quite exquisite.  Very generous of you.”
Crowley grunts.  “Don’t go blabbing.”
“I will pay the bill,” the Bentley chimes in, “you taste the wine.  Driving back in style, in my saloon will do quite nicely.”
The pair fall silent, eyebrows rising in unison.  Then Crowley says, “Huh.  Doesn’t usually do that.”
“Just take me back to yours, that will be fine,” the Bentley adds, helpfully.
Aziraphale frowns, cheeks pinking.  The Bentley feels his fingers dig into the upholstery of the passenger seat. “What—”
“Come on and get it!”
“Crowley,” Aziraphale says, reaching a shaking hand toward the dash, “I believe your car’s record player has been possessed.”
“It’s a radio, and don’t you dare lay a finger on it.”  Crowley peels one hand off the steering wheel to clamp his fingers around the angel’s, arresting his progress.  “You’ll bless it useless.  Gunk up the works.”
Aziraphale fumbles for words, eyes darting from the dash to Crowley’s hand and back.  When the demon releases him, he turns his gaze to his lap, fingers tightly interlaced.
“Thought we’d go back to mine,” Crowley says, his voice a masterclass of composure.  “There’s more where that Bordeaux came from.  Well, there will be.  It’s currently the quality of sewer runoff, but I expect it’ll age well by the time we get there.”
“Yes—yes,” Aziraphale mumbles.  “That sounds
 lovely.”
Crowley makes a noncommittal noise, but the Bentley can sense the pleasure behind it – a soul-deep purr, as smooth and sonorous as a well-tended engine. The car takes control, veering toward a pothole in reprimand.  The angel and demon lurch in their seats.
Aziraphale gives a strained chuckle.  “Goodness.  This contraption really has a mind of its own, doesn’t it?”
Crowley narrows his eyes.  A snarl of suspicion coils through him and into the Bentley, purged in a belch of exhaust. “Nah.  Mindless machine, that’s all it is.”
“The machine of a dream,” the Bentley corrects.
Crowley scowls, then dismisses the comment with a grunt as he turns into the car park by his flat.  Guiding the Bentley into a restricted spot, he kills the engine with a palpable sense of expectation.  The Bentley soldiers on.  It belongs to Crowley, after all.  They are in accord, even if the demon denies it with his last unnecessary breath.
“I can serenade and gently play on your heart strings,” it croons to Aziraphale. “Be a Valentino, just for you.”
Aziraphale splutters, wide-eyed and scarlet.  “Crowley—”
“What in heaven?” Crowley’s pretense at poise begins to splinter.  He snatches at the door handle and boggles when the locks snap down, prisoning them inside.  “What?”
The Bentley decides the time for romance and subtlety has passed.  Six millennia of Crowley’s pent-up longing and frustration flood its receiver, shivering through electrons to warp tune and words to the language the car knows best.  “Let me feel your heartbeat grow faster, faster.”
Aziraphale grips Crowley’s shoulder.  “Can’t you make it stop?”
“Ooh, can you feel my love heat?” the Bentley demands, relentlessly.  “Come and sit on my hot-seat of love.”
Crowley slams a fist against the dash, which has absolutely no effect.  “Knock it off!”
The Bentley will not be bullied.  It switches tracks with a pop of static and a slippery squeal of notes sliding one into another.  “With the pistons a pumpin’, and—”  The words stagger, skip, “With my hand on your grease gun, mmm, it’s like a disease, son.”
Aziraphale groans and covers his face with his hands.  “Oh, God."
“Angel, I—”
“Get a grip on my boy racer roll bar—”
“Will you shut the heaven up!” Crowley says in a strangled scream.  He turns to Aziraphale, eyes frantic and pleading behind the sunglasses.  “Angel, I’m so—don’t be upset, it’sïżœïżœit’s a cocked-up transmission, or—”
“Oh, for pity’s sake,” Aziraphale chokes out, and reaches a hand into the air to pluck down a dose of ethereal power so potent it shudders through the infernal vehicle.  Crowley winces – the Bentley winces – and the angel snaps his fingers, obliterating the entire world in a blaze of holy light.
Seconds later, Crowley blinks past the radiance stamped across the backs of his eyelids.  He rubs his brow, grimacing.  “What blessed bloody miracle did you just
”
He trails off as the scenery out the window comes into focus.  They are parked on a grassy hillside, the steel and concrete monoliths of London supplanted by lush, sun-dappled canopies of oak trees.  A sea of long grass outside ripples under a summer breeze.
Crowley turns to gawk at Aziraphale.  “Where are we?”
Aziraphale looks at him, eyes determined, chin set—and mouth gone suddenly soft, unsure.  “Away. Alone.”
Crowley has scarcely a moment to think before the angel is leaning in close, hands on his cheek, the nape of his neck.  Their lips brush: once, so gently. So carefully.  Crowley licks his lips, tastes redcurrant and cinnamon.  Aziraphale draws back and exhales in a rush.  “Too fast?”
Crowley is furious and thrilled by turns.  “No, get back here, you utter—”  And his words vanish, miracled away by the angel’s hands, the angel’s lips, the angel’s sighs and gasps and wine-stained moans.
“Tonight,” the Bentley sings,“I’m gonna have myself a real good time
And the world, I'll turn it inside out, yeah... I'm floating around in ecstasy...”
