Got to use the BikeHub at Union Station and it was a great idea to ride the train and have less stress. I hate driving and have chosen to stop driving all together. I am a passenger princess 👸 now and my husband drives us. I am a bad driver with road rage issues and I don’t wanna get shot. I live in a city and ride a bike so I am not reliant on a car to get around. I plan on riding the Metrolink to visit homies and cousin and their families. The catch is I would have to stay overnight cuz I am not biking home through DTLA on a Saturday night oh HELLLLL NOOOOOOOOOOO I only ride at night with groups. I enjoy riding the train. :) I will plan this out to visit family when the months cool down. Hopefully late September I have dinner with my fam.

My sister as also in town and we had lunch together. August was awesome cuz I got to see my sister and cousins yay!

1-7 Littletown

Gisterenavond op de boot van het buffet gegeten, een redelijke keus en niet slecht klaargemaakt. Daarna me eens over de route voor morgen gebogen, wat is dat gidsje toch onduidelijk. In elk geval is de bestemming Durham en daar iets voorbij moet een camping zijn. Het zou de eerste camping zijn vanaf Newcastle, maar dat lijkt me sterk. Morgen maar even op internet zoeken. Een uurtje Wifi hier aan boord kost 4 euro en dan voel ik toch een bepaalde drempel.

Ik slaap vlak bij een autodek en elke keer dat het schip een stevige beweging maakt gaat er een auto alarm af. Ik hoop dat het steeds dezelfde auto is en dat ze morgenochtend met een lege accu staan, waarna ze tegen ferrytarieven van de boot gesleept moeten worden. In elk geval hoor ik het alarm niet meer als ik ga slapen.

Bij het opstaan zie ik dat ik gisteren toch meer verbrand ben dan ik dacht. Dat gaat nog wat worden de komende anderhalve week als ik de hele dag buiten ben. Het nadeel van de antibiotica is niet alleen dat je overgevoelig wordt voor zonlicht, maar ook dat je darmflora aangetast wordt. Dat leidt dan weer tot het wegvallen van de comfortabele regelmaat van een toiletbezoek per dag. Een plasje langs de weg kan altijd, maar this is a different matter (letterlijk en figuurlijk). Enfin we gaan het zien vandaag.

Om 7 uur gaat het ontbijtbuffet open. Ik begin met drie bruine broodjes, dan een bord yoghurt met muesli en tot slot meloen en ananas. Zo kan ik er een paar uur tegen.

Na de douanecontrole (wilt u uw bril even afzetten) fiets ik vrij hoog op de Tyneoever naar Newcastle. Aan het begin van de stad is een Bike Hub, dat wil zeggen een werkplaats, koffiebar met gratis wifi en WC’s.

De koffie is er nog erger dan die aan boord. Op de boot is een Starbucks koffiecorner, maar wat ze daar maken, lijkt in niets op de Amsterdamse Starbucks! In de bikehub hebben ze een indrukwekkende espressomachine, maar het smaakt toch echt naar oploskoffie. De scone daarentegen smaakt me uitstekend.

Toen werd het een 20 kilometer lange klim naar Consett over een oude spoorlijn die aan de monding van de Derwent begint, een zijrivier van de Tyne. Ongeveer drie uur lang door een prachtige omgeving met groene valleien en oude spoorbruggen. Het is best doortrappen over de gravel terwijl je voortdurend moet afremmen voor mensen met loslopende honden en kinderen. Een keertje verkijk ik me op de steilte van de helling en voor ik kan afstappen, val ik om en lig ik op mijn rug naast mijn fiets.

Maar tegen twee uur ben ik toch in Consett. Ik eet een boterhammen met kaas in het park bij gebrek aan een pub. Daarna komt de beloning, 20 kilometer omlaag naar Durham.

Durham is een prachtige oude stad, maar wat een verkeerschaos. Eerst dacht ik daar te kamperen, maar de camping is alleen voor caravans. Ik doe een belrondje langs de campings in de omgeving, maar ik krijg alleen maar antwoordapparaten. Dan maar een bed and breakfast voor een keertje, want ik ga niet al die campings affietsen in de hoop dat toch open zijn maar te lui waren om de telefoon op te nemen.

Dus nu heb ik een hele mooie kamer in York House in Littletown voor de prijs van ongeveer tien nachten kamperen.

Gelukkig was het niet zo warm vandaag en meest bewolkt, dus kon ik met lange broek en trui fietsen en is de verbranding beperkt gebleven. Alleen de ruggen van mijn handen waar de gaten van mijn fietshandschoen zitten en mijn neus zijn rood.
