Without discovery we’d be existentially nowhere. So when I see this crazy Hubble Telescope image of the Necklace Nebula, described as “a diamond necklace of cosmic proportions”. I get giddy. This shit is 15,000 light-years away in the distant constellation of Sagitta(What?! Does She-ra live there?). The Necklace Nebula consists of tightly packed masses of gas that receive ultraviolet light from nearby stars, giving the appearance of diamonds in a necklace. Bijules client and icon, @badgalriri sings and smokes this gem quest that leads to further understanding the unknown and how to harness it. As a non-traditional self-taught jewelry designer, I indulge in the artisanal aspects of the materials. There is beauty and value to applying these ancient techniques and raw sources to create a timeless artifact and to create it with the spirit of collaboration. One clear approach I use to imagine a romantic jewelry collaboration uses the GEM FIRST. Family gems or favorite whiplash stones fuel the design and fabrication process. Racism lies at the root of hate violence. It will take all of us fighting racism TOGETHER to stop hate crimes. By the time a hate crime happens the harm has been done. We need to treat the root cause, which is PREJUDICE and RACISM; the belief that in order for some to prosper, others should suffer. This is a society problem that urgently needs fixing. Let’s move public resources from punishment to prevention, including a strong and inclusive education system that teaches TOLERANCE as a first principle of citizenship. Strength comes from unity, not division. We need local and state government leaders to fight racism through concrete policies that prioritize compassion, wellness, and the needs of people first, NOT profit. People are what make our economy and communities strong. Racism divides us and makes us weak. We can and should do more with our resources to care for our elders, who are especially vulnerable both to the virus and to racial violence. Incidents of anti-Asian discrimination, harassment, and violence have been on the rise since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. More recently, assaults against Asians in San Francisco, Oakland, and New York, as well as in communities across the country, have escalated, resulting in severe injury and death. These events are not isolated incidents but represent an alarming surge of anti-Asian sentiment, the results of scapegoating and the racist and xenophobic rhetoric in politics and media. The collective health and safety of our diverse communities of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at risk when ignorance, misheld beliefs, hate, and violence are perpetuated. As the “model minority,” we will no longer remain quiet! We entreat you to join us in the campaign to raise awareness of anti-AAPI discrimination and hate. To disregard our names and identities is to erase our existence. I’ll let my Korean dad’s words on his family’s immigration reinforce our collective struggle against racism. “The late Dr. Kim brought his family to University of Wisconsin Madison on September 1, 1964, which was my 15th birthday. To augment my brave daughter’s quest for justice against the tide of misplaced mob mentality, my father Dr. Thomas H. Kim, first brought from Europe the vaccine against tuberculosis BCG to Korea and test inoculated his first daughter successfully. My sister is a retired doctor/professor of dietetics.
