I’m still going through photos from our Zodiac boat adventure in Victoria, but here are the first few shots! There were 8 or so Biggs orcas (transients) during our whale watching excursion, and they hunted a harbor porpoise right in front of us. It was spectacular! Even a 🦅 (not pictured, unfortunately) swooped in and snapped up some entrails. Nature for the win! Via @marinewildlifetourism Credit © 📷 ✅ @yourtofino Transient killer whales in the waters of the Pacific Northwest are often referred to as the 'Bigg's Killer Whales'. They were named after Dr Michael Bigg who has fundamentally shaped modern killer whale research. The photo ID techniques we apply today, looking at dorsal fin and saddle patch to tell individuals part, were developed by Bigg and his team in the 1970s which was pretty much revolutionary. He also initiated the first orca census which, during that time, was quite unique since this hasn't been done with any other wild animal before. Unfortunately Bigg passed long before his time, but his legacy still remains which is reflected in the animals he studied as well as scholarships and a nature reserve that is world-famous for it's pebble beaches where orcas frequently gather to get a good rub. Credit to @gary_j27 with Caption 2017 is quickly coming to a close and the end of the year is always a good time for me to reflect on all the amazing encounters I was so fortunate to have this year. It was really hard to narrow it down to nine but here are some of my favourites from this year in the Pacific Northwest. Being home in Ontario for the holidays this year has reminded me of when I used to live here over a decade ago when all I had was a dream of watching whales for a living. I'm so glad I made the decision to leave everything behind and move out west to chase that dream. Credit to @gary_j27 Meet T019B "Galiano". This big boy and his family are one of the most common matrilines we see here in the Salish Sea. He's infamous for his massive dorsal fin, which is so big it bends over a bit as you can see in the top left photo. This bull was born in 1995 and travels with his mother (T019), younger brother (T019C) and presumed grandmother (T018). I saved my favorite set of photos for last. :) These were taken on the whale watching tour out of Victoria, BC, Canada, that Craig and I took last month with @princeofwhaleswhalewatching. The tour was via Zodiac boat, so we were much closer to the water than on other tours we’ve been on. The ride was rough but oh-so-much fun! There were 8-10 Biggs (transient) orcas that worked together like a pack of (sea) wolves to trap and kill a harbor porpoise. Craig has video he’ll share in the coming months of the hunt. It was absolutely amazing. As a reminder, please boycott #SeaWorld.
