You've heard of people hating Lucas, but now I raise you: Why do people like Robbe?"(Not that I do NOT like him, I just want to read your response)

Hello! I am so glad you asked! I think Robbe tends to get overshadowed by Sander’s character (not that Sander doesn’t deserve all this attention because he does) but Robbe himself is a very unique take on the Isak character and, in my view, is one of the most likable  Isaks for reasons I’ll get into in a second. So I’d love to explain his appeal and even why people might NOT like him (for totally valid reasons).

As always, all of this is is based on my own opinions and perceptions. Some issues with his character will be brought up that have warranted criticism from the LGBTQ+ community (which I am apart of) and should not be dismissed as a matter of inconsequential opinion. Listen to queer voices. Anyways.

I’m just gonna say the most prominent thing I think about when it comes to Robbe: he’s the nicest Isak. We all joked that he must not have been based on the same character as everyone else BECAUSE he was so nice. He does his homework, does his chores, is very apologetic (to a fault), easily forgiving (also to a fault), and just has an overall very sweet demeanor that differs from the usual trademark Isak grumpiness seen in characters such as Isak, Lucas, Matteo, and a bit of Martino. He does do that Isak thing of being defensive and snapping at people when he’s stressed or tired but he doesn’t do it often and it normally immediately followed by an apology. He’s just so damn nice. Britt was awful to him. Awful. And he still promised to keep her updated on the search for Sander and thanked her for her help in that. He dealt with the worst heartbreak and still provided Zoe a shoulder to cry on when she needed it. He broke things off with Sander because, yes, he suffered from horrible internalized homophobia, but also because he felt terrible about what he did to Noor. Noor just told him off for a sort of small thing and he really sat there at the bar wallowing because he argued back his own feelings in their relationship. Also. Only Isak to actually break up with the Emma character after the first kiss. He lied about the reason but he tried okay. He has the closest relationship to his mother (besides Martino) and was sad for her rather than frustrated by her. This, coupled with his behavior at the hotel, OHN, and Dinsdag 07:27, illustrates quite a gentle disposition for a teenage boy.

He does have an uglier side in comparison to the other Isaks. When he lashes out, he lashes out. He says stupid shit that he doesn’t mean using language he’s surrounded by on a daily basis that he has in his head that is okay or is harsh enough to work. It isn’t okay. It was never okay. People were angry and forgave him and some were angry and stopped watching and are still angry and all those people are valid. I’m queer and him snapping at Sander made me sick to my stomach but I was more angry at how he felt rather than what he did if that makes sense? Like he felt so ashamed of himself he felt the need to do something…like that…. just made me feel terrible about the whole thing. He is learning though and I’m glad Milan was there to help him learn from his mistakes. He could be careless with feelings. His own, Noor’s, Milan’s, Sander’s, etc. I think one of his biggest changes was him learning to be more cautious with his own feelings in terms of what limits he’s willing to push himself to and what is acceptable to say and not.

I love him because I ache for him. Before a conversation I had with Cas (who would probably be more than willing to explain in more detail) about Robbe vs Lucas and a scale of being miserable, Robbe was the saddest Isak to me (spoiler alert: I ended up tying them). Shitty friends, no parents, severe IH, a boy he thought was playing him, the homophobic attack, and then he has all these people telling him that the one good thing in his life meant nothing. The Isak character believes the Sonja character because they all have this inkling of insecurity in their relationship- this idea that Even’s feelings for them cannot possibly be real. It was apparent to me that Robbe had the most insecurity in his relationship out of all the Isaks, due to all that mess with Sander and idk just the shitty luck in his life, making him more vulnerable to believing Britt when she said that he was a delusion of Sander’s (gag). I say all this in a way that might sound critical of Robbe and, in a way, it is— because to everyone watching it was so painfully obvious that Sander loved him more than anything in the entire world. And yet I could still relate to Robbe terribly. Despite all evidence suggesting otherwise, your brain clings to one piece of reality that voices even the smallest of fears. Insecurity is not logical. It blows everything out of proportion. I wanted to shake Robbe for breaking up with Sander in Ep9 but I also knew I would probably feel the same way.

He has this sort of down-to-earth relatability that maybe isn’t as sad as Matteo’s but is endearing. He fixes his hair before answering a facetime call, he curls into a ball because he’s overwhelmed by his own crush (THAT REALLY GOT ME I DO THE SAME THING WHEN I’M HAPPY), he listens to loud music when he’s stressed, he deals through life with a “this might as well happen” attitude (seen esp with his relationship with Noor) and has the really large capacity for love yet no outlet until he meets Sander. Tbh, the fact that he and Sander fit so well together that it’s downright soulmate shit would have probably made me suspicious too. I think in his relationship with Sander, a lot of people liked how good he was to him (that one cursed clip notwithstanding). He’s very attentive and really takes interest in Sander when he’s talking or getting into his own interests. He laughs at his jokes and listens to his Bowie playlists and puts up a fight to stay with him during Sander’s manic episode. Robbe needed a break from his own misery and Sander needed a soft place to land and I think many people really enjoyed how the Isak character was put into a very caring position. He’s clingy (in the cute sense of the term) and genuinely enjoys Sander’s presence but he’s also capable of being a reassuring and calming presence to someone who needed it.

Bonus reasons: he’s a silly billy, kind of dorky, really smart (like really smart wtf), always down to have a good time, very patient, and he probably gives really good hugs and forehead kisses I just Know It.

My Salon Doll

So I’m not gonna do like a full review, but you can find a pretty good one here if you’d like to see all of the specs like the body type and some close-ups of the micro-rooted head, clothing compatibility etc.  Everything is below the cut!

Lemme talk about the doll first, and then I’ll rant about everything else when I’m done lol. 

I knew there were some inconsistencies with the hair length from doll-to-doll, so prior to making my purchase I sent them a DM and they gave me a list of which characters had the longest hair for the current batch, and luckily one of them was on my list of faves (Olivia) so I got her.  I only have pics from after I removed her from the box (the box is hideous and makes the doll look cheap) and redressed (her outfit was pretty tacky but not the worst). A hairnet would have been better. The hair felt...dusty and dry, which is to be expected since dolls can’t exactly produce the oils necessary to protect and hydrate the natural hair that’s been rooted into their heads. Along with that, she also has these short little hairs everywhere- this is also, probably, a result of the hair being real, but I kinda wish they’d have brushed out those shorter hairs prior to rooting- they stick up all over the parting in particular and it’s not the cutest look. I think these dolls are really poorly presented both by the brand and the way they’re packaged, but I’ll get to that later lol.    Her layering is also longer on the right than the left, which is annoying because I’m not sure I can taper the ends enough to match the rest of her hair if I decide to even it out.  Here’s a (crappy) photo I took after I changed her outfit and gave her some quick curls with my curling wand:

I want to note that my bedroom is not a great place for this doll- her skintone has a slight olive undertone, and her hair is also a bit ashy, so she doesn’t look the best in my 100% grey and black bedroom with dim lighting. Her hair definitely looked that dry irl tho lol She also has like...shine spots on her face? I saw this on a few other dolls too, but mostly on played-with, used dolls so I assumed it was a result of product usage and play. But no, my doll is presumably brand new and she has some shiny spots on her forehead and nose. The body is kind of a weird sculpt (you can see this in the review I linked above) and it’s a weird size, too- I’m sure I can find something to fit her in, but she’s much skinner than an American Girl so clothes kinda hang weirdly on her. Her torso is a strange shape, the legs are pretty short and so is her neck. I think a big issue is also that none of the clothes I have for her, are particularly flattering on her body type so I’ll need to find something that works lol I decided to wash and heavily condition her hair to add some life to it, which REALLY helped (and got rid of some of the shine on her face thankfully- the rest will probably need to be buffed out with a magic eraser)

Also gave her a far-far side part like I do my own hair lol  The wash and condition really helped, but her hair was still frizzing up a little while it air dried, so I just went ahead and gave her a full blowout and some very very subtle waves with my curling wand (she’s wearing an AG outfit from Etsy which is P loose):

I’m probably going to wash and condition it again tonight and leave it to air dry- but this time I’m gonna leave her hair soaking in the conditioner for an hour or so, just to really hydrate and compensate for the lack of scalp oils in her hair lol  My overall thoughts are that the doll is pretty; she has a beautiful face sculpt, with subtle paint and and a nice, serene expression, and I think her micro-rooted, human hair is a fascinating concept and a pretty fun experience. Her hair is kind of an adjustment for me, because you can’t work with it in the same way as synthetic hair- it lays differently, reacts differently to heat and product, requires a different kind of care and I’m simply not accustomed to it, but I still absolutely love playing with her and her hair.   My biggest qualm is that everything-everything- about the branding, aside from the actual dolls, themselves, is just..bad. Like to the point where I’ve known about this line for almost a decade and hadn’t purchased one until now because the website, branding, even the outfits and the HORRIBLE unflattering stock photos are so bad that they literally deterred me from buying one lmfao, and even now I was only convinced by seeing other people’s photos of the dolls, like the amazing ones from this user and this photo of Olivia (which is what made me pick her lol) The dolls have such subtle features and neutral hair colors, which should both be the focal points of the line along with the human hair obv, but they drown it all in tacky kiddy MSPaint branding. Like this is the only mass-produced doll line to ever have micro-rooted human hair, and despite being around for almost a decade there is SO little information about them when it comes to reviews and IRL pictures and it has to be because of how poorly the dolls are presented by the brand itself.

Anyway despite the branding issues, I’m gonna buy another one lmfao. I want Brynn or Sydni, but they both have similar qualities to Olivia so I might go with Jade instead. Plus her hair looks shiny and gorgeous in every photo I’ve seen of her lol.  But first I need to find clothes that fit them. I think slim 18′’ dolls like Magic Attic and Kidz n Cats might be compatible. All of the AG clothes are too low on the waist line, so they really drag her down and make her look really stubby.

Their reaction to betrayal: She’s pretty used to it, tbh, seeing as her trust has been betrayed quite a lot, and so I’d say the biggest long term reaction is that she has severe trust and abandonment issues. (due to both family stuff, and friend/relationship stuff). Short term: she gets irrationally angry and upset at the person, destroys any reminder of them, and tries to avoid them as much as possible. I’m thinking specifically of her breakup with Leigh, in which she definitely felt betrayed, but she has in other instances as well.

random headcanons.

describe how they would spend a stormy, overcast/rainy day.

depends on his mood, and the temperature. if the day is cold, he’ll probably spend it inside, finding different ways to amuse himself considering he can never focus on one thing for too long. chances are he’ll be lounging about on twitter, watching the telly, playing games, working on his music, or even finger painting should the fancy strike him. he’ll also be wreaking immense havoc as well, considering how messy he can be when left to his own devices. if someone’s around to distract him, that helps. if the day is warm, though, he might actually go out and splash around in the puddles. c: he doesn’t like thunder and lightning – that frightens him, and he’ll undoubtedly be hiding under his bed.

what is the character afraid of?

so many things. so, so many things. mostly of being alone. seems a bit cliche, but he’s always so like… vibrant, so loud, so bright; one of his biggest strengths is his ability to draw people in, his charisma, and how good he is in a crowd/how much he loves being surrounded by others. there’s more to it than that, though, i suppose — more to it than just his tendency to gravitate towards crowded places, or big groups of people. he doesn’t want to be alone emotionally, either. he doesn’t want to fuck up so badly (as he always tends to) that everyone just like…decides he isn’t worth dealing with anymore/wasting their time on. he isn’t a “grown up” and he doesn’t want to be, but he isn’t a child either, and he’s afraid that it’s not something that anyone will cope with.

he’s also afraid of the dark. like, don’t laugh at him, but he’s afraid of just…perpetual, impregnable darkness. he’s not worried when the lights are out, as long as there’s street lamps shining in from outside, or the moon, or just something to break it, but if it’s pitch black? no thank you, not going to happen.

the thing that he’s probably most afraid of is becoming his parents, though, with sort of correlates with internalizing a fear and making it more about his own actions than anything. he doesn’t want to abandon everyone he loves. he doesn’t want to be his cold mother, who cares more about her own ambitions than she does about her family. he doesn’t want to be selfish, and he doesn’t want to be a manipulated push-over like his father. he doesn’t want anyone to tell him how to live his life, but he doesn’t know how to live it on his own either. so far he’s done a shit job of not being just like them, but he still fights. he still fights because that is probably the worst possible outcome.

how do they deal with bad memories?

he ignores them, doesn’t talk about them, refuses to let anyone uncover them. if kai ever tells you about his past, then you are one of the very few people that he trusts more than anything tbh. it’s just easier to ignore that bad things have happened in his life, easier to sweep it under the rug in his mind and pretend it never happened than it is to address them and make them real. even when he feelsl ike they’re crushing him. even when someone asks.

what is their role in a horror movie?

the comic relief, obviously. only issue with that is the fact that he would undoubtedly be one of the first few to bite it, because he’s too busy laughing at his own jokes to care about the axe-wielding murderer.

how do they hide their secrets?

behind smiles, laughter, and generally acting as if he’s fine when in all reality he’s probably one of the furthest people from it. it’s easy for kai to marginalize his own issues and pretend that they aren’t happening/didn’t happen, and it’s easy to fool people into believing it’s the truth. he’s a great actor, really — an amazing actor. to the point of it being a fault.

which of the seven deadly sins do they relate to the most?

wrath. kai is quick to anger, and though he’s even quicker under normal circumstances to be okay again, there are some cases in which he will never forgive you. take his parents, for instance — he loves them, yes, but he also hates them. like he doesn’t know how it works, holding two such feuding emotions inside of him all the time, but he can’t pretend that anything they’ve ever done is okay with him. there are a few other people in his world that have provoked that kind of anger, and it isn’t as uncommon as it might seem.

would they ever wish on a falling star? if so, what would they wish?

as kai would say, “wishes get lost” and stars falling is only beautiful on account of the fact that he believes it’s because they don’t want to be alone anymore. if they hit earth and they don’t shatter, then they won’t be, and he’s glad for that. glad enough to smile, and glad enough to not feel like he needs to make a wish on someone else’s happiness. in short, he thinks it’d be selfish. it’s the star that’s important here, not him

what do they refuse to budge on? what are they stubborn about?

is ‘everything’ an appropriate answer? because that’s pretty much the truth. kai can be incredibly, incredibly stubborn, for no other reason than he hates to admit when he’s wrong. generally speaking, it can happen over even the most petty of things, and with that stubbornness comes his temper. it’s almost better when he’s angry, because there’s a good chance that his feelings will make him see the light a lot faster than he would otherwise. there aren’t any specific things that immediately come to mind that he’s particularly stubborn about (other than the fact that marshmallows are evil and ninja turtles really do live in the sewers), but as a general rule, expect him to argue. a lot.

tapping his feet or effectively ‘twiddling his thumbs.’ kai is in a near constant state of motion, and it can be extremely irritating when one is exposed to it for extended periods of time. he also tends to pick at his clothes and sometimes his skin, and his hair is always being touched/played with, which makes him seem unkempt and/or jittery. another habit of his is rarely to never thinking before he speaks, which tends to get him into a lot more trouble than he would be in if he just took the time to consider what he was saying before he let it come out of his mouth. he always leaves the toothpaste uncapped, and when he’s in the kitchen and getting things out of the fridge, he tends to allow the door to hang open for obnoxiously long periods of time.

any addictions? ( food, sex, power/control, etc )

um, not really on the food front. he eats a lot, but i wouldn’t say there’s anything he’s particularly addicted to, unless you count animal crackers (his favourite snack). sex…sex is a tricky topic, because kai is an extremely sexual person, but i don’t know that it could be classified as an actual addiction? like, if he can avoid it, he won’t go without, but he probably wouldn’t completely come apart if he didn’t have it (don’t quote me on this because he’s never actually gone without for very long, even in situations when he probably should have lmfao, so. idk). i would definitely say he needs to be in control/have the power in most, if not all, situations; if he feels like he’s at a disadvantage, or like someone else is holding the reins, he gets a bit reckless. like, he really, really hates not being in control. that’s the only true addiction i’ve noticed in him, aside from the extra af sex habits.

cotton. lemon. some expensive perfume that he wouldn’t know where to begin to describe even if someone asked him to. it reminds him of his mother, and of the time before work became more important than their family; before his parents were gone more than they were home, and before kai felt so very left behind, even though he didn’t understand the emotion at the time (he still doesn’t). there isn’t necessarily a specific memory so much as a myriad of them, and believe it or not, his mum actually used to tell him that she loves him when she hugged him. talk about nostalgia.

how do they sleep?

kai usually sleeps on his side curled up into a little ball when he’s on his own, though when he falls asleep he’s actually sprawled out to cover as much space as possible. it isn’t until he’s actually asleep that he changes positions without realizing it (this is different when he’s with a partner; if he’s with a partner, he likes to be the big spoon okay). when he’s in a deep enough sleep, like REALLY deep (which happens rarely), he’ll make little noises and sometimes actually say the names of people who are really important to him/he loves a lot. it’s quiet, but it has been known to be heard. he occasionally has “puppy dreams” during which he’ll twitch or kick his feet, and he sleeps so lightly he wakes himself up.

what are their pyjamas like?

kai usually only sleeps in his underwear tbh. or naked, depending on the situation. idk. as little clothes as possible basically. he isn’t opposed to sleeping in sweats, but he avoids it if possible.

what do they dream about usually?

confusing things. kai honestly dreams strangely, more in colors, feelings, sounds — a lot of piano notes, perhaps not so weirdly. most of the time he barely remembers what he dreamt of, but occasionally he’ll have one that’s quite vivid. nightmares, should he have them, will fuck him up for days, and those have been happening more and more; a few times a week, if he’s unlucky.

how neat/tidy is the character?

he isn’t. an absolute mess, really. he isn’t like dirty, but he’s super cluttered and scatterbrained, and the hamper could be directly beside him and he’d still toss his clothes on the floor. he’s terribly disorganized, and while he can usually make it to the kitchen, don’t ever ask him to wash dishes. it’s a miracle he’s even capable of taking care of himself sometimes.

how affectionate is the character?

extremely. like i mean extremely. if he’s with someone that he’s comfortable showing affection to, he’ll probably want to be touching them almost all the time. that doesn’t mean he will be, it just means he’ll probably at least be thinking about it, and everything else is a testament to his self-control. not only that, but he likes to be touched himself, and he will do anything he can to get pets from people. platonic touches on his tummy or his arms or his back help to soothe him, whether it be from distress, or just from his perpetual over-energized state that is constantly hanging over him. want kai to hold even remotely still for you? show him affection. pet him. or, alternatively, accept the affection he’s probably trying to give.
