Ikea woos India’s rising consumer class, tapping new markets

HYDERABAD, India — In Hyderabad’s bustling Nampally furniture market, customers explore a crowded, dusty labyrinth of shops, haggle over prices and work with carpenters to design made-to-order housewares.

This is the competition Swedish giant Ikea faces in tackling the $40 billion Indian market for home furnishings, which is growing quickly along with the country’s consumer class.

India is a test case for whether Ikea should keep shifting resources toward emerging economies, including Latin America and China, given the saturation of markets in Europe and the United States — and the possibility of another global recession.

“India is an extremely important market for Ikea,” said its Mumbai-based marketing manager Per Hornell. As one of Ikea’s biggest markets, India will be key to its overall expansion plans, he said.

Six months after Ikea opened its first store in Hyderabad, the 400,000-square-foot cornucopia of furniture, linens, kitchenware and other goodies is drawing between 10,000 and 30,000 visitors per day, Hornell said.

The store sits within Hyderabad’s Hitec City, a cluster of global tech companies in the city of 6.7 million that includes Amazon, Google and Microsoft and employs hundreds of thousands of people. High-rise apartment buildings are sprouting up to house the city’s new migrants.

Just 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Hyderabad’s Ikea, Nampally remains a beehive of activity — demand for India’s traditional custom-built furniture remains high. But Ikea already is adding to pressure on Indian furniture sellers’ profits and could eventually take a bigger bite of the market.

Mohammed Naoman, 37, bargained hard for a better deal on a dining table, agreeing to the sale only after securing 15 per cent off the original asking price.

The “customer has become a little bit more pushy in bargaining,” said K. Madhav Shetty, one of hundreds of shopkeepers in Nampally, which with its heat and the din of making and repairing wooden furniture is a world away from Ikea’s massive, clean and air-conditioned big-box store.

Apart from the novelty and comfort of its vast showrooms, Ikea’s offerings appeal to younger buyers not ready to invest in India’s traditional heavy wood furniture.

But it’s not clear whether all that foot traffic is translating to sales.

“People here are out to enjoy. They are here more for entertainment than shopping for furniture,” said Ranjitha Kumari, a software techie who brought her two kids one recent weekend. “It is just not a furniture shop, it is an experience which I think is difficult for others to recreate.”

The Hyderabad Ikea boasts the usual life-sized drawings and fully kitted-out living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and offices to give customers a realistic feel. But the hottest sellers are the 1,000-odd items priced below 300 rupees ($4.18).

Sunil Munot, a textile businessman from Bhilwada in Rajasthan who is building a new home, travelled more than 1,500 kilometres (932 miles) to the store with his architect to have a look.

“At present for a customer like me who lives far off, delivery is a big issue. I am here only to pick up smaller home furnishing items. The bigger furniture for my new bungalow will be designed and made by local people,” he said.

Ikea declined to break out India revenues, but Forrester Researcher analyst Satish Meena said that within five years the company hopes to capture $4 billion annually — or 10 per cent of India’s furniture and home goods market.

The long-term plans are more ambitious.

Ikea plans to open its second India story in Mumbai, the financial capital, in 2019, followed by Bengaluru, India’s Silicon Valley, and the New Delhi national capital region.

By the time it’s built out its planned 20 stores across India, it hopes to cover between 50 and 60 per cent of the market.

“Two things that favour Ikea now: India’s young population that is aspirational in nature and willing to experiment with brands outside India, and the price point which is accessible to a wider segment of customers,” Meena said.

Ikea’s Hornell said the company will emphasize online sales and offer to dispatch assembly teams, like India’s online-only competitors Urban Ladder and Pepperfry, rather than ask customers to wrestle with its often challenging DIY assembly.

“More and more Indian consumers are going digital and put a premium on accessibility and convenience, reflecting their typical hectic life situation,” Hornell said.

India’s massive and increasingly prosperous middle class is luring other big foreign names, like Dnube, Dubai’s top furniture brand, which opened its first shop in India in Hyderabad in November.

Ikea also is competing with Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart.

And like other retailers, it faces a new 18 per cent goods and services tax.

“More than the big posh showrooms or malls it is the burden of government taxes which is making our business difficult,” said Syed Nayeemuddin, another shop owner.

In India’s highly fragmented and disorganized home goods market, there are few norms for customer and after-sales service, so Ikea and other foreign brands could help the industry as a whole by introducing standards, said Shafique Porbanderwala, president of India’s Association of Furniture Manufacturers and Retailers.

But Ikea and others may struggle with the idiosyncrasies of the local market, said Surinder Bantia, the managing director of Bantia Furniture, one of Hyderabad’s biggest brands.

“Local players know the pulse of the local customer and will be willing to go extra mile to meet their needs. Leave alone meeting the needs, the foreign companies would not know what is a ‘shadi-khana’ set and what is ‘maile-daani,” he said, referring to a furniture dowry given to newlyweds and a clothes hamper.

IKEA strives to keep prices low as it opens first store in India

HYDERABAD (Reuters) – IKEA will set some prices even lower in India than elsewhere when it opens its first store in the country on Thursday, as it woos cost-conscious shoppers unaccustomed to DIY furniture.

Over a decade since floating the idea of Indian expansion, the Swedish retailer will finally mark its entry with a 400,000 square foot (37,160 square metre) store in the southern city of Hyderabad, where 1,000 of the items, including some cutlery and stuffed toys, will be priced at less than 200 rupees ($2.91).

IKEA is pushing into Asia and South America as growth slows in Europe and North America. It is betting on India with its growing middle class, but mindful of the relatively high pricing that hit sales when entering China and Australia.

The company has said it could take years to reach major profits in India. Raising the proportion of locally sourced goods will help in mitigating high import costs.

Known for its giant out-of-town warehouse stores, IKEA is in the early stages globally of moving towards smaller inner-city showrooms as it adapts to the rise of online retailing. While the initial plan in India was for 25 traditional stores by 2025, the country will now get some of the smaller outlets.

IKEA India finance chief Preet Dhupar told Reuters that in Mumbai, where the next traditional store is planned for summer 2019, a city-centre format could open in the same year. And in third-out town Bangalore, the first traditional store, planned for 2020, could even be preceded by a city-centre format.

Regulation dictates IKEA must source at least 30 percent of materials locally within five years of starting operation. It already sources about a fifth of its global supplies from India.

Group Chief Executive Jesper Brodin, at a news conference on Wednesday, said India would become one of IKEA’s biggest sourcing markets in the future. At present, its top suppliers are China, Poland and Italy.

Per Hornell, IKEA’s market manager for the Indian state of Maharashtra, said a big opportunity laid in establishing large-scale production in the country of board-on-frame, a recent and lighter alternative to particle board, to stop having to import it from Europe and China.

“Board-on-frame is used to make bookshelves or wardrobes. That is a component to make most of our furniture range,” Hornell told Reuters.

IKEA India boss Peter Betzel said products and materials that IKEA was currently looking to source more of locally were textile, metal and wood such as bamboo and acacia.

IKEA’s newly launched Indian website showed popular products at lower prices than in the United States. The white variation of its best-selling Billy bookcase is cheaper by a fifth and the dark-grey Ektorp sofa is priced 30 percent lower.

Nevertheless, analyst Sowmya Adiraju at researcher Euromonitor International said the target audience for many current IKEA products, especially big-ticket items, seemed to be the wealthier end of India’s middle class.

“It would be interesting to see how IKEA does justice to its vision of ‘furniture for all’,” she said.

NAMASTE INDIA!

IKEA will not only have to win over tastes in India, but also change a culture. Driving to a shop for do-it-yourself (DIY) interior goods is a novel concept in India, where made-to-order furniture is delivered to the customer fully assembled.

IKEA has therefore taken the unusual step of setting up a 150-member in-house task force to help with assembly. Overall, the Hyderabad store will directly employ 950 people and another 1,500 indirectly for various services, it said on Wednesday.

So far, IKEA has spent half the 105 billion rupees ($1.5 billion) earmarked for investment in the country, and plans to spend 10 billion rupees setting up each store.

Competition in India includes startups Pepperfry and UrbanLadder, which offer free delivery and furniture assembled on site at no extra cost. The overall market, however, is dominated by a multitude of vendors selling ready-made or made-to-order furniture.

“Even though winning customers in the highly fragmented, untapped and unorganised Indian market will not be easy for the Swedish home furniture giant, it will surely accelerate a shift to organised space (market),” market researcher GlobalData said in a note.

GlobalData forecast a compound annual growth rate of nearly 11 percent over 2016-2021 in India’s furniture and home-improvement market, reaching 4,979.3 billion rupees.

With assembly team and samosas, IKEA lays ground for India debut

MUMBAI/STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – IKEA is set to open its first store in India next month, and the world’s biggest furniture retailer is localizing its offering – from the food menu to its “do-it-yourself” (DIY) assembly model – to ensure success in the country.

IKEA, which aims to soon open a 400,000 square feet (37,160 square meter) store in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, is setting up its first ever in-house assembly team and offering local delicacies such as samosas to woo shoppers, at a time when growth in some of its more established markets is slowing.

“The entry point has been that the identity was going to be the same,” said IKEA’s finance head Juvencio Maeztu.

“But, for example, Indians like firm mattresses so you need to adapt the mattress offering. And we are developing a mattress that has a coconut layer because it is cooler for the summer,” said Maeztu, adding such customization would be seen in items ranging from cutlery to showroom layouts.

India’s furniture market is largely dominated by unorganized retail and local vendors, and consumers are used to enjoying the comfort of made-to-order or fully assembled furniture delivered to their doorsteps.

The “do-it-for-me” culture is very prevalent in India, said Sowmya Adiraju, an analyst at research firm Euromonitor, adding IKEA would have to look into delivery and assembly needs to woo Indians.

While IKEA’s popular DIY furniture is well known, it is also sometimes parodied as shoppers are at times overwhelmed by the task of assembling intricate units.

The Swedish retailer is setting up a 150-member team to help assemble furniture and is also partnering with UrbanClap, an app-based service that connects people with everyone from tutors to carpenters.

The IKEA in-house assembly team will be more a little more expensive than UrbanClap’s services, said Patrik Antoni, IKEA’s deputy head in India.

The companies both declined to reveal pricing details, but currently UrbanClap charges customers about 250 rupees ($3.73) for a 30-minute carpentry job, such as installing IKEA’s popular Billy bookcase. In comparison, TaskRabbit, the services platform acquired by IKEA in 2017, charges U.S. shoppers a minimum of $36 for any installation job.

LOCAL TASTES

IKEA has visited more than 800 homes in India to see how people live across the country, said Maeztu, who led IKEA’s India team before moving to take on his new global role earlier this year.

While the Hyderabad store will have spacious room designs, its Mumbai store will pack a lot more product into a smaller space to reflect the city’s apartment sizes.

“You need to understand what life’s about and then the range is presented to give solutions to the needs and frustrations,” Maeztu said.

Like many international restaurant chains in India, IKEA is also changing parts of its menu to suit local palates.

To cater to Hindu sensitivities it will not sell its beef meatballs in the country, but serve chicken and veggie balls instead, while also offering shoppers biryani, samosas and veggie hotdogs, said IKEA’s Antoni.

One winning formula that IKEA plans to stick with is low price points, by offering 1,000 products priced under 200 rupees ($2.97), said IKEA Group CEO Jesper Brodin, adding it was keen to avoid missteps made in Australia and China, where its initially higher pricing discouraged potential customers.

Although IKEA plans to gradually ramp-up local sourcing, one challenge to keeping prices low will be taxes, said Brodin. “I’d say the biggest challenge for us is (import) duties. That’s not something we can do something about.”

BIG BET, BIGGER RISKS

The foray into India comes at a time when IKEA’s growth has slowed in some of its established markets, pushing it to enter new markets such as Chile and India, while developing its digital offering and smaller city center store formats.

IKEA Group’s company-owned stores in 2017 grew retail sales by 4 percent. In comparison sales in India’s homeware and home furnishing stores grew some 9 percent, according to Euromonitor.

Still, IKEA, which has already sunk about $670 million into India, will face stiff competition in the Indian market from a slew of online furniture start-ups such as Pepperfry, UrbanLadder and FabFurnish, so success will come at a price.

IKEA’s Antoni said the company, which had initially expected to invest $1.56 billion to set up 25 traditional stores by 2025, was already looking to spend more than originally planned and eyeing experimenting with non-traditional formats too.

CFO Maeztu said some of the initially planned 25 stores would likely be in new formats. The first four would however be the classic giant out-of-town warehouse stores to cement the image.

The company, which has bought land in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai and Gurugram is also looking to expand into five other markets – Surat, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chennai and Pune, said Brodin.

“This is our next really big market,” said Brodin, while warning it would take years for the company to see major profits from the market.
