Milestone Monday
On this day, September 25, we celebrate the birthday of acclaimed American author William Faulkner (1897-1962). Faulkner was born and spent most of his life in Mississippi. Influenced by his family history and the region of the American South where he resided, Faulkner began writing at a young age and published his first novel, Soldiers’ Pay, by his 29th birthday. Faulkner went on to become a prolific and well-received writer, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1954 and 1962, and has been called “the greatest artist the South has produced.”
Among our many Faulkner materials, we are excited to share this facsimile of Faulkner’s unpublished one-act play The Marionettes. The play has been described as a symbolist drama that poetically explores themes of desire, sexuality, growing old, life, and love. Faulkner wrote The Marionettes in 1920 during his association with the drama group at the University of Mississippi. The play was handwritten, illustrated, and bound by Faulkner and is considered a showy display of a young man early in his career.
Our facsimile of the original manuscript was published by the Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia in 1975 and printed in a limited edition of 126 copies at the Garamond Press in Baltimore, Maryland. It was created in memory of Linton R. Massey who was a figurehead of the Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia and assembled and donated much of the University of Virginia’s Faulkner Collection through his personal friendship with William Faulkner.

the environmental storytelling of my university's instructions for submitting your thesis to the thesis/dissertation repository is kind of hilarious. every step is like here's what you enter in this box. AND HERE'S WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES ENTER IN THIS BOX
#“enter your name here. DO NOT enter your supervisor's name”#“bibliographic citation is for if you've published part of the thesis before. DO NOT enter your bibliography here”#you just know some poor admin person is suffering every day from people who have managed to get a master's degree or phd#but nevertheless Cannot follow instructions

Whatever your preferences for referencing, I think we have to agree that the book I am currently reading has the worst system:
E-book with limited downloads (e.g. you can only have a certain number of pages) broken into individual chapters/essays
References and notes are endnotes (including commentary, not just refs!), at the end of the entire book, not the individual chapters that you would download individually, so you need to download the Notes section separately which uses up 28 of your allotted pages
The end notes are in author-date format, so you also need to download the Works Cited section, using up a further 30 of your permitted pages, otherwise they mean nothing
Yes this means you need to have three separate PDFs open to check one reference
Why
#gradblr#academia#endnotes need to die#put the bibliographical information in the same document that you're citing it in. is that so much to ask

please tell me I have some writing studies followers who will find this as funny as I do
#okay the CONTEXT is that i'm currently drafting some stuff for my honors thesis which is about plagiarism#and one specific form of plagiarism is patchwriting which basically means#“changing it enough to avoid plagiarism detection software but not truly rephrasing it in your own words”#there's a more specific definition but generally speaking it's problematic less cuz of ethical issues#and more because it shows a student may not fully grasp what the source they're citing is saying#anyway. the reason why this is funny is cuz rebecca moore howard COINED THE TERM#it's okay tho she'd love and appreciate me and recognize that patchwriting can be an important developmental milestone#she's LITERALLY my mom#rambles#(also to be clear the reason why i don't want a more wordy description - or just a quote - is cuz this is for research not the report)#(part of a survey I want to conduct. so i can't assume that the people taking the survey will know what it is.)#(and i don't want to bore them. cuz even though i'm Literally surveying professors. they still might get bored.)#also to be clear part of the humor of this is that this comment is for my advisor#who i probably wouldnt say this to if not for the fact that she found the least formal annotation ive ever done in an annotated bibliograph#fucking HILARIOUS

when Taylor Swift said;
you were the king of my heart, and now I can’t find the pulse
I used to step into the daylight, now I just sit in the dark
mending all my gashes, but that’s the kind of heartbreak time could never mend
I hoped it’ll never end, but I’ve seen this film before
now you’ve lost me, when I’d hoped I’d never lose you
and when she said;
for you, I’d never walk Cornelia Street again

I was supposed to work this morning, instead I began another OS for the young Newt series...
And what was supposed to be a short introduction (as the series is centered around Newt and his grandparents, not his parents) is already up to 2K... But I love baby Newt 🤷 (Yes, this is my only defense)
Unfortunately, her husband was right, and Evalyn began seeking Newt, who, of course, didn’t suspect that with the return of summer weather came the inescapable social events. As often always, the showering process turned out to be challenging, and accompanied with disapproval.
“Don’t want a shower Mum… It hurts.”
“Foal, we have to. Your father’s reception begins in one hour. We don’t have time for a bath.” Newt pouted, a sound midway between a grinding and a moan coming out of his throat.
“Love, what about … let me think … we add some aquatic glow-worms to the water ?” asked Evalyn.
She took her wand to gush a few of them, imprisoned in little drops of water. In an instant, the young wizard’s focus redirected to the droplets whose shape changed with the moves of the creatures inside. The latter gleamed with a golden-brown light, which sometimes flickered. The child, flabbergasted, looked at them with his head tilted, as if he wanted to memorize them forever. Fascinated, he raised his hand to one of the magical bulbs made of water, which silently blew to pieces, resulting in a myriad of sparkling particles which deposited on his body, splashing him in the process. In the dimness of the room, only lit up by a few candles, the fragments became flecks, glistening like the bioluminescent phytoplankton described in one of his grandparents' books. If he first pulled his hand back as if he had burnt himself, he began after that to explode several water bubbles in a row.
#fantastic beasts#newt scamander#fantastic beasts and where to find them#a blue woolen ocean#young newt#autistic newt#I went to too many bibliographical references for this one already#also I read FBAWTFT again yesterday#I had forgotten that it was explicitly written that his mother strongly encouraged him#so there we are#writting this is sensory therapy#oupsi#I became crazy again

Today's exam was a disaster, I'm just fucking done with everything
#and like I have studied#the entire fucking semester#but the professor said one day that there will be a task where we will have to search for books in two catalogs#and we were like#well okay we will do that sure#but the professor didn't say that we will have to search for our own examples of books for certain bibliographic descriptions#and you know#we had 15 minutes for each task#but when you don't have magazines or book series at home#you're just fucked#ready to cry because you'll spend your precious time on searching for something you don't have a clue about#and like I had this difficulty to search for one book from a book series#because I have some at home#but they weren't signed as series in the catalogs#for some fucking reason#and I had to search for something that IS a series#not to mention that it was a online exam#sure at home great#but I hate writing exams on pc#I really hate it#am I done with the rant in the tags?#NO I'm only starting#because even if I feel tired I feel kind of calm about what I have written there#only wondering if I put the sizes of books in the right places#but this is the worst exam I have written so far#I have flashbacks to historic morphology#and this subject with online exam was horrible#but then again#I have another exam online in the upcoming week which will be even more awful#talking corner

mla vs chicago vs apa citations is a pointless debate bc everyone can just agree that the worst citation style is saa. non-anthropology majors will never know
#i hate it so much#you can't say et al unless you have more than TEN AUTHORS#and these archaeology papers often have at least four authors so the citations are so long#and the bibliographical entries are so complicated to format#and the in text citations look stupid bc they're longer than mla in text citations#soapbox

Me: Dear Professor, do you happen to have the article you recommended for me, so you could share it with me since I unfortunately don't have any way to access it otherwise
Professor: Yes, of course, here's the link where you can freely access it :)
The link: your institution does not have access to this content :) you can give us 58 dollars though, then it's all yours :)
#he#literally#sent me the link to the journal#does he think i didn't find the journal website and just went straight to asking him??#I'm crying lmao#he gets a gold star for effort though#even messaged his friend [colleague who co authored the article] to ask her for the link#i can't#babe please#i sent you the entire bibliographic information for that article#do you Really think i hadn't thought about visiting the journal website just once??#anyway#I'll let him know it doesn't work so that's why i won't include it in my thesis but that i don't mind#i just think it's hilarious#good estimate of my average intelligence though#academic misery
