Calling out Bustamente is important, but it would be nice, if it was paired with some self reflection and soul searching on some fans part, because those tweets weren't written by her and she wasn't the only one who liked them, or expressed similar sentiments.
Like it's great that everyone is a Lance Warrior now and deeply cares about ableism, but the sentiment rings hollow and hypocratical, when I know, quite a few of those people, who are incredibly loud about how this wasn't the first time Bustamente has liked hateful tweets about Lance, demanded Stroll's head after the Qatar Quali Incident or regularly talk about how he is a piece of shit pay driver, that any random junior driver would easily beat in the same car, just like those tweets said. Also some of these fans have easily forgiven similar mistakes for their faves and don't seem to have any qualms about using discriminatory language towards drivers they hate, which makes me question, if their outrage is genuine or just about being bored during the winter break and finally having an opportunity to have a go at a driver.
Don't get me wrong this is not me excusing Bianca's ableism or trying to shift the blame, I just wish some people would look in the mirror sometimes and practice what they preach, rather than do this weird posturing, whenever a driver fucks up.

The first F1 Academy race was great! My only complaint is that they need to enforce black and white flags sooner. If Bianca continously cutting corners is distracting for us as viewers, imagine how it is for those racing against her. Sad for Lia DNF'ing because she was doing so well. And congrats to Doriane for the win! Also a special shout out to Abbi because she also kept up with Doriane, those two pulled off a 2 second gap to the rest of the grid.

F1 Academy - History Is Made In Valencia
FP1 + FP2 Valencia is where we open the weekend, going into the second round of the inaugural F1 Academy season. Campos Racing’s Nerea Martí topped the timing sheets in FP1 ahead of Rodin Carlin’s Abbi Pulling and ART Grand Prix’s Léna Bülher. A change in the top 3 was to come in FP2 starting with Marta García going to the top, almost a second ahead of her Prema Racing teammate, Bianca…

I dislike Sophia Floersch almost as much as I dislike Danica Patrick. While Danica suffers from basic ignorance, Sophia Floersch suffers from foot in mouth disease. Whatever good points she may have are overcome by her need to center herself in every conversation in the most condescending way possible. She doesn't want the advancement of women as a whole in single seater racing, she wants her singular advancement.
Case in point, Marta García will unfortunately not be able to continue racing in single seaters. She doesn't have the funds, and we are all well aware of the lack of funding in the junior series, especially for women who have few and far opportunities in between. This is tragic, but instead of framing the conversation about the lack of support for women, she does the facebook equivalent of a retweet and goes on a condescending rant and argues with randoms in the comments. She rants about how visibility doesn't help fund women which is fundamentally untrue, Bianca Bustamente is highly visible and is getting her checks accordingly. Visibility doesnt help Sophia because she may be loud but shes not marketable. No sponsor wants to touch her because of her social media presence. Visibility works not only to gain funds but to inspire younger girls to enter the sport as well.
She goes on to attack the F1 Academy. F1 Academy is not perfect and can use a lot of work, but it isn't very feminist of you to tear down the same women you claim to want to build up. It makes her seem bitter and like she's hating from outside the club. It's especially egregious when you aren't offering solutions. The current F1 pipeline doesn't work for women, but it doesn't even really work for men either. There are plenty of male junior drivers with stalled careers due to the expense of the junior series or the lack of f1 spots to advance even after they win. Shoving women into the F1 pipeline without addressing how fundamentally broken it is, isn't any better, its just more expensive.
Moreover, she simply could have sent a private message of encouragement and any resources she could spare over to Marta rather than centering herself in the conversation. All female racers have it hard Sophia, you're just the only one being particularly obnoxious about it. Sophia may make it to the top, but at what cost, if she's a crappy representative for women?

i read through a lot of your posts while procrastinating on an essay tonight - i really appreciated your insights ❤️ i’ve been thinking about ~women in motorsport~ lately and i’m honestly furious that ferrari is *demoting* maya because f1a is cheaper and it’ll be good PR, after she kicked ass in one of the shittiest freca teams, when they could’ve funded a better team for her in the first place, only for the end goal to be going back to freca in 2025?! it honestly feels like sabotaging her career, the opposite of what f1 academy says it wants to achieve.
i’m tentatively hopeful for doriane, because she’s already proved herself racing against men, and she has an existing relationship with prema. but man do i know how cruel and unforgiving motorsport is for young drivers and especially women with the weight of an entire gender on their shoulders - one bad season and immediately every female driver is complete shit.
do you have any thoughts on all the bianca bustamente discourse? because the last few days have been exhausting - i’m annoyed as hell at her liking the tweet & the non-apology but i know sooo many people cackling with glee over the opportunity to tear apart a woman in motorsports and it’ll stick with her forever, unlike many problematic men in the paddock 🫠
honestly? I don't think this is a Bianca problem.
Bianca is a teenager whose first language isn't English. I am autistic and I absolutely understand how hurtful people using it as a derogatory term can be; I had to moderate comments through the Max Verstappen vs Mongolia incident and honestly, probably some percentage of why I am so mad still.
Bianca liked a tweet that was supportive of her, in denial of her being overrated. she probably didn't even read all of it. she's not the issue here.
the issue here is F1 twitter. F1 social media at large. I guarantee every little horror show who's been wringing their hands and crying and howling about this - an opportunity to demand a young woman of colour gets fired from their hated papaya team - has sent shit to, for instance, LastLapLucy or me or anyone else who's openly autistic. I guarantee all of them have said worse.
no one in this discourse actually cares what an F4 driver likes. why are they looking at that? because she's pretty and successful and Filipina. because people want to tear her a new one for existing. none of this is about Bianca or Stroll, it's about two things:
-that's an F1 Twitter tweet. Bianca didn't write it, the shitty minds that brought you "hounding Matt Bishop off Twitter with homophobic abuse" did - they are the problem and frankly were probably just trying to bait Bianca into liking something they could cancel her for
-the sheer gross eagerness to tear apart a teenage girl because people hate that she is pretty and learning her craft as a racing driver.

Not to make everything about #HIM but this Bianca Bustamente incident shows once again how Lewis has almost flawlessly shouldered such a massive burden of perfectly representing an underrepresented community since he started racing. What Bianca did is wrong and her actions will unfortunately damage the image of both women racers and se asians. It is very unfair that one person's misstep can affect the image of their communities and ruin their future chances. This is exactly why what Lewis has endured for years and his ability to take accountability is so significant. Such heavy burden was placed on him since he was a baby, one misstep from him could've permanently ruined the future of black drivers in all of motorsport, not only F1. But his positive image has ensured that future black racers will have a good role model.
this ask just made me sad. lewis (or bianca or any poc/minority for that matter) shouldn't be burdened with the task of being a model citizen or "role model" for an entire group of people. but it's the reality that we cannot escape. not saying they should get a pass to be horrible people but ykwim? unfair. it's just incredibly sad because now people are comparing her to juri vips.
and not her using 'my brother has autism' like racists use 'i have black friends' i mean wtf? apparently it's a pattern with her too like she has some one sided beef going on with lance in particular, while literally every other driver is a pay driver (plus apparently she comes from money herself). whatever the issue is there's no excuse to encouraging ableist terms

Now that I think about it, there are women in motorsport who have accomplished so much more than Bianca, but don't get nearly enough attention. Like there are women who finished higher than her in F1 academy but don't even have a seat yet (or at least I'm not aware of them having one). And I'm not buying the "she's young / doesn't have social media training excuse" either. When I was 18, I wasn't being an asshole and liking ableist tweets about people I don't know personally
I'm just very irritated like going through her likes ruined my morning. Support women who aren't ableists
