A jeweller was allegedly thrashed to death by three youths following a minor road accident on Ranakotha-Jagannathpur road in Bhograi block of Odisha’s Balasore district yesterday.According to reports, Harishchandra Kamila, the deceased, of Pathareswar village under Basta police limits in the district was residing at Ranakotha village for the last 25 years and working there at his jewellery shop.Last evening, Kamila was carrying a woman of the village to hospital in his van as she was ill. His vehicle got shoved against a motorcycle on which three youths were travelling in a inebriated state.Though no one was injured in the incident, the trio attacked Kamila leaving him grievously injured. He was rescued by locals and admitted to Jaleswar hospital.The victim was later shifted to the Balasore district headquarters hospital (DHH) but succumbed to his injuries on the way to the medical.Investigating into the incident, police have arrested one of the three accused, identified as Mrityunjaya Daricha. A gate constructed on the Odisha-West Bengal border has irked residents of Balasore who claim that the gate has encroached into the state. The construction has come up on a road connecting Odisha’s Sahabajipur  and Udayapur sea beach in Bengal.Locals of Sahabajipur under Bhogarai block in Balasore alleged that the gate has intruded at least 10 feet into the state. The villagers threatened to pull down the gate if the issue is not resolved immediately.“We are giving them (West Bengal government) an ultimatum of seven days and if they still fail to resolve the matter, we will dismantle the gate,” said Sarpanch of the village, Tapan Panda “The neighbouring state has been continuously bullying us. We will tolerate no more,” Panda fumed.Bhogarai legislator, Ananta Das stated that the State government will not tolerate the encroachment.“Whatever the West Bengal government has done is illegal. I have already talked to the Home Secretary, Collector and SP in connection with this. Some officials of the district administration have already visited the spot. Appropriate action will be taken at the earliest,” Das stated.Assuring immediate action, Additional Collector, Manas Padhi said, “We will write to the West Bengal government and request them to take necessary step.”  The Odisha TV : 18th. Residents of Mahisamunda village under Bhograi block of Odisha’s Balasore district today thrashed a Junior Engineer (JE) of North Eastern Electricity Supply Company of Odisha Limited (NESCO) and a policeman over their cultivated land being damaged after fire emerged out of a transformer. According to reports, JE Madan Mohan Sahu had visited the village for inspecting power supply to an irrigation point in the area. In the meantime, locals gheraoed Sahu and thrashed him unitedly. A policemen, who tried to rescue the JE, was also reportedly beaten and manhandled by them. Protesting the damage to the land, the villagers also set it on fire. The Odisha Suntimes Bureau : 9th. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik once again had a narrow escape as shoes were thrown at him while he was campaigning for Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidate for the ensuing Bijepur bypoll. Patnaik was campaigning at Kumbhari under Barpali block while he was attacked. However, one of his alert personal security officers (PSOs) blocked the incoming objects. Soon after, the BJD supremo was whisked away from the spot. The security personnel swooped on the attacker and took him under their custody. The youth, who was sitting in the front row, has been detained at the local police station, sources said. The detained youth, identified as Kartik Meher from Padmapur area, is believed to be a worker of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a party flag and cards were found from his pocket, said Inspector-In-Charge of Barpali Police Station Subrat Behera. He, however, denied to speak on the youth’s political affiliation to any particular party. Confessing to his crime, the youth, showing no regret for his act, said: ” I did it (throwing shoes) after three people inspired me to do so without naming the three persons.” Terming the attack a pre-planned one, BJD alleged the youth is a BJP worker. ” The BJP did it after knowing that it will not be able to win in Bijepur. It shows their (BJP) low mentality, frustration and goondaism.” However, the BJP refuted the allegation. “I condemn the attack on the Chief Minister. This is not an act of the BJP. The youth is yet to be identified and the investigation into the matter is yet to be started. But the ruling party has started blaming us. It shows their desperation due to imminent defeat in the by-poll,” said state BJP president Basant Panda. The Congress too condemned the incident. ” Violence has no place in a democracy,” said senior Congress leader Niranjan Pattnaik. Meanwhile, Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
