Especially this performance of Fuck You (An Ode To No One) goes so far beyond epic that my mind still has not returned with it after all these years. I'm regurlarly coming back, but my mind is not. So raw, brutal, possessed.

Jimmy Chamberlin is a monster on drums, so understated in his performance, so powerful in his impact, with James Iha laying down the coolness, as always, his mastery commanding discipline even in the most heated moments. Melissa Auf Der Maur, a goddess standing tall amidst the tempest, grounding their energies. And Billy Corgan celebrating this amazing song, elevating it to new heights with new highlights and nuances. Like a manic stagecoach driver urging his horses along steep clffs and through forests and moors, the reigns seemingly flapping losely in his hands but never a doubt about the tight grip he really has on them, bringing them all home safely.

breaking my no commentary rule real quick to say, i love that odysseus became every monster he fought except for calypso. he asked penelope if she would fall in love with him again. he waited for her response. he was willing to accept a rejection. even when she provoked him, he was accepting the rejection but not the destruction of the symbol of their past love.

And she validates his monstrosity, his survivalism, by emphasizing how she waited and essentially reached a similar inhumanity. Because those years were war for her too. To fight for her husband, to fight for the father of her son, to fight for the future where they're all alive and her entitled suitors don't stain the earth unless it's because they're corpses, it's war. Sparta, and women from Sparta, much less princesses, know war. War took her husband from her, and war is what it'll take to make sure that when he comes back, he's not leaving again.
