September 2020. Not to be confused with the Nicola Griffith sci-fi novel, the Francis Lee film AMMONITE is a slow-moving, grey drama, positing a romantic and sexual relationship between paleontologist Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) and Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan), who later became a noted geologist. (They were friends in real life, although the movie's depiction of their relationship is speculative.)
Like the very similar PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE, the story wants to make a feminist statement about the social and professional marginalization of women (Anning is frustrated that the members of the Royal Geological Society — which she isn't eligible to join — are getting great mileage out of her work without compensation or credit, as she lives hand to mouth selling fossils and shells in a little shop), but it's also determined to separate its feminist thesis from socioeconomic class in a way that ultimately feels very uneasy.
Winslet is quite good, but the script doesn't ever really get into Anning's head, so her two main modes are prickliness and repressed wlw "I am, regrettably, attracted to you, so I must ask that you immediately go far away and never speak of this again." A subplot about Anning having previously had a fling with an older woman (Fiona Shaw) feels underdeveloped, and while the film centers on a particularly vivid sex scene, its version of the Anning-Murchison relationship isn't really convincing. It also ends on an odd note that doesn't seem to jibe with the fact that the real women remained friends for most of their lives, if more in correspondence than in person. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Indeed. VERDICT: If you're not just watching for that scene, it's typical underwhelming bourgeoisie art house filmmaking.

Wym about Ammonite being a joke? Never saw it but it's been recommended to me before so I'd love to know the tea
Honestly, Ammonite is a pretty transparent ripoff of Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
PoaLoF is a movie written and directed by a lesbian, Céline Sciamma, to deliberately transgress typical romantic tropes; it's made to look sensitively and meaningfully at female experience, to "celebrate the sexiness of consent" as Sciamma put it, and even if it doesn't have a happy ending, to show the possibility of connection and active desire even for a brief time between women. It's designed to challenge traditional female roles and to display female interiority even within the confines of patriarchal worlds and the patriarchal parts women play to/around each other. It is a lesbian film with lesbian interests at its core; she specifically rejects how popular media elides the word "lesbian" and insists on the movie's lesbian identity. In classic dyke fashion she also cast her ex as one of the main characters, that being Adèle Haenel, who recently left the film industry, rejecting it as a prop for "a capitalist, patriarchal, racist, sexist world of structural inequality." Haenel also famously walked out of the César Awards after Roman Polanski won Best Director in 2020.
Ammonite is a movie, written and directed by a man, that in some shots and beats is almost 1:1 with PoaLoF. The extremely visible similarity actually disgusted me when I first watched it. It stars two straight women, Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan, in an apparent sort of "biopic" about Mary Anning, about whose sexuality very little was actually known; as my friend @naiadpress has let me know (just today we were talking about this, actually) there's no historical basis for the lesbian romance--which, don't get me wrong, I'm soooooo down to pretend historical women were gay/bi when they weren't; but it's a cherry on top of the male prerogatives taken in the movie that a random woman for whom no evidence of a gay history exists would be grabbed out of the history books and subjected to a dramatization that doesn't have parallels in her actual life. The only actual lesbian involved in the production is Fiona Shaw, who can do nothing wrong in my eyes. It's just a kind of... Embarrassing attention-grab attempt by a man, done to capitalize on the hegemony English-language movies and famous English-speaking actresses have in the awards sphere.
Watch PoaLoF, then watch Ammonite right after and you'll see what I mean. Ammonite is just such a disappointment, through and through. And sorry, but the sex scene is ATROCIOUS. Brutally unsexy and unerotic and not a pit or pussy hair in sight. Saddest thing I've ever seen.

Ammonite
Ammonite is not a love story. And yet it has all the trappings of one: romantic beach strolls; longing looks; feverish spontaneous sex; and a quiet atmosphere that really allows you to get to know the characters through their facial expressions.
This is perhaps why the film was immediately compared to the critically-acclaimed French film Portrait of a Lady on Fire. But unlike that film, Ammonite is not a tale of great love. The film, written and directed by Francis Lee, tells the story of real-life paleontologist Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) who came to prominence in the early 1800s for her prehistoric findings. Anning was a scientific pioneer, with intelligence much more advanced than her male peers at the time.
Her quiet life, working and living with her mother (Gemma Jones), is suddenly disrupted by the arrival of geologist Roderick Murchison (James McArdle) and his troubled young wife Charlotte (Saoirse Ronan). What begins as a simple apprenticeship quickly morphs into something more complex when Roderick abruptly departs and leaves Charlotte behind. While Mary is initially resistant to Charlotte, their relationship eventually becomes sexual and they begin an affair.
Their bond is built on mutual loneliness. Mary’s work and living situation keep her far from others while Charlotte’s general air of melancholy and an inattentive husband leaves her frustrated and isolated. Together, they are a mismatched couple, whose emotional alignment is heightened by the gulf of experience and emotional maturity between the two.

Winslet plays Mary with all the seriousness and precision of a no-nonsense professional. She rarely smiles during the film, keeping her brows down and her eyes focused on the seaside where she procures her artifacts. She has little care for her physical appearance or being traditionally ladylike. This is illustrated by a scene where she casually urinates on the beach near the rocks before quickly returning to her work.
Ronan takes on the more traditionally feminine role, with all the adoring looks and romantic overtures that come with it. But Mary’s first love is her work, and eventually, that creates a wedge between the two. There are hints that Mary’s emotional coldness is due in part to a failed relationship with an older woman (Fiona Shaw), but the film does not delve deeply into that part of the story.
Lee, best-known for his debut feature God’s Own Country, is not interested in romance in the traditional sense. This film focuses more on the atmospheric parts of real-life: cleaning; putting on and removing clothes; the crash of the waves onto the shore; eating meals; and the long silences between speech. Ammonite emphasises the sounds of life: the dragging of feet and fabric across the floor; the tightening laces of a corset; the clank of silverware during meals.
These small things seem to provide the most comfort to Mary, more than passion or sex. In Ammonite, Lee shows us the world from Mary’s point of view. Charlotte is the disturbing force in her quiet life, pushing her to choose between her independence and her work. But from the first moments of the film, it’s clear what she will choose.

ANTICIPATION. Not sure if this film will bring anything new to the table. 3
ENJOYMENT. The way the film moves builds a level of intrigue. So many meticulous moments catch the eye. 4
IN RETROSPECT. There’s something so “complete” about Ammonite, with a resonant ending that is poetic in its refusal to give us what we want. 4
Directed by Francis Lee
Starring Kate Winslet, Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Jones

Ammonite
[3.5 stars]
With her latest film, Francis Lee delivers the second part of a diptych with her previous  God’s Own Country. That is certainly an over-simplification, and nearly a false equivalency, but the comparison is unavoidable when you look at the plots and issues. In both stories, the characters are confronted with their own desires and sense of self when a stranger comes into their lives.
Also, as with her previous film, Lee never lets you forget that movies are a visual medium, where the camera can become simply an observer. She creates a deeply emotional film that is more moments of quietly intense reaction than dialogue, much like the recent Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Kate Winslet (The Mountain Between Us) and Saoirse Ronan (Little Women) are a beautifully paired set of actors, each  intense in different ways and neither afraid of silences or contemplation. Every moment is full of tension.
From the sidelines, Gemma Jones (Rocketman) and Fiona Shaw (Enola Holmes) fill in the gaps and catalyse the story. Lee’s script isn’t perfect, but her ebb and flow of the evolution of the characters is inexorable and she isn’t afraid to leave them on a precipice up to the very end.
Definitely see this movie. In part to see Lee’s efforts and growth, in part to see some truly wonderful performances, but also to see what film can be when you trust the medium.
