We had a promising start to the day but then this happened... It doesn't look like much, but this fray in a tiny rubbery belt means that the laser cutter won't work properly. Which means I can't continue with orders. It can also mean that the cutter continues burning without movement and can, and has in the past, started fires within the machine which can spread in seconds. I've learnt from my mistakes and I've been lucky with each one that I've learnt quickly and with little damage. I NEVER move away from the machine while it's on. Luckily I caught this as soon as it happened, and we always have a spare in because it does happen from time to time. It's taken a chunk of the morning but it's fixed and we're back to making orders. But it just shows how on the ball I have to be with this delicate, scary equipment. This is gonna be a reach to make this a “writing specific” post, but let’s see what I can do... One of these magnificent beasts is my dog (the tiny 130 pound one), the other is my friend Nadine’s Newfy. Nadine lives in Malibu is currently waiting word to find out if her home is still standing... think about that. Your entire house, with all your memories and worldly possessions in real jeopardy. Almost unfathomable to think about, but yet it’s happening in California right now. So my husband and I started talking about what we would save if we had to evacuate (where we live we are totally safe from fires, this is just speculation....) And I realized the back up system for my laptop is in the house... and a scenario where I lose my laptop and my back up drive isn’t too hard to imagine.... If I lost my laptop and the back up I’d be BEYOND devastated.... i have all my work from my very first book in 2000. Every draft, every rejected story, bad idea, shitty script, sooooo many projects that have sold and way more that haven’t. Gone! Yeah, did I just order a fireproof lockbox on Amazon?! Yeah! Make a plan, people... life can be an incredible fun adventure because of all the unknowns, but tragedy lies in wait for everyone. (Sorry to be so dark, but trust me... I’ve been there.) You can’t really prepare for the worst case scenario (though I have a helluva urban survivalist kit going— my husband has veto’ed the battle axe I wanted to buy)... but you can make sure you have a plan for your most valuable possessions. 100 Days of DIY's Day 3 : Door/ Porch Sign Today's #diy is a #welcome #sign for my #frontporch . It's been raining all day so I didn't want to go outside and get soaked for a photo, but you get the idea. I'll hang it on the door or lean it in the corner or something. I dunno, just need a little something to spruce our front porch area up a bit. I'll also be putting a nice #nosoliciting sign out there as well. Unfortunately, not everyone is welcome in our home..lately, creepy 'door to door' salesman / solicitors have been targeting local neighborhoods and trying to gain entry into homes of poor unsuspecting women with children. It hit us close to home when our friends were harassed by a shady character recently. Luckily, the cops were called and precautions have been set into place. Just a simple warning to all my hospitable friends, family, and fellow DIY'ers... be kind but cautious, don't open the door for strangers, and watch out for your neighbors as well.
