This request is literally 10 days old, which, to some, might not seem as a long time. For me however, it is. I'm sorry, but as I've described, I'm just trying to balance writing and school right now, so I'll be writing a little less than before.

I knock on the door, waiting for Beth to open up. We’d planned a movie night while her parents were gone, and Hannah was at Sam’s. Josh was still home, but she told me he wouldn’t be a bother, and would probably stay in his room the whole night. 

I have met him many times before, and would even call us friends. Though at the same time, I often wonder if he looks at me like another baby sister, despite only being one year apart. He often gives me a hard time, teasing me and joking around, but most times, I don’t mind. I usually also hope that he never means anything with his small occasional comments, because nothing will happen either way. My best friend’s brother? That would be a problem just waiting to happen. 

Josh and I have been drunk together, partied together and been on get togethers together, though I’m not familiar with everyone in their group yet. 

I stand outside, my patience running low in the cold weather, wishing I brought a scarf. I hear footsteps coming from inside. Finally. The door unlocks, and a broad, tan Josh in a thin rolled up sweater and some sweatpants stands there, arm against the doorframe. He gives a small smile, looking me over. 

“Well, look who decided to come while the parents are out” he coos, a small whistling sound coming out of his lips. 

“Well, hello Joshua, care to let me in?” 

He smiles, contemplating whether to make this difficult or not. I look around, sighing and waiting for an answer, thinking about shouting Beth’s name and telling her that her brother is being a prick. Luckily, he opens the door further, making space for me to walk inside. “Thank you” I say, trying to hide my smile a bit. I’ve been here many times before, so I immediately know where to hang my coat and leave everything else. Josh keeps standing there, watching me. 

“Beth is out, said something about getting snacks for your movie night” He explains, and I nod. The store is not far from here, so she will probably be back soon. 

“Well then, do you know which movie she’s got planned?”

“Of course I do, I’m the one who helps pick them out”

I give him a curious and sceptical look, not having heard this before. He keeps his gaze locked on my gaze, a small smirk playing on his lips. 

“Have you?” 

“Every time” 

My mouth opens a little. Beth is always talking about her great taste in movies, never having mentioned this before. 

“No, are you serious? Beth has never given you any credit”

“Little sisters… what do you expect?” 

I hum, not knowing how to respond to that. I walk inside, him following closely as I sit myself by the kitchen counter. 

“So, what movie have you chosen then?” I ask, looking up at him again. Instead of sitting, he just leans against the counter with one arm, body turned my way. I can’t help my gaze, looking over his revealed forearms. 

“Something a bit different than usual…” he smirks, eyes following my gaze down to his arms. I break free, leaning forward a bit. 

“Okay, what movie?” 

“A scary one” 

“No”

“Oh yes” 

I whine, leaning back again. I hate scary movies, I hate jumpscares and gore. Why can’t people just like normal, funny, cozy stuff? 

“Josh, are you serious?”

“And there we go, you’re starting to use my nickname” 

“Joshua! Are you serious?”

“Well, that lasted for long”

I sigh, rolling my eyes. This is not how I want to spend my night, and considering that the walk home will be dark and scary, this movie will definitely fuel my fears. 

“Hey, calm down, it’s a good movie, maybe you just haven’t seen a good scary movie yet, this one might change your mind about the whole genre” He smiles, a hand going to my arm. I can't help the small blush coming from the touch, his fingers warm and comforting. I don’t want to do this, but I really can’t object when Beth is the one getting everything ready, and I just need to show up and have a good time. Or pretend I’m having a good time. 

The door opens, and his hand is immediately removed as Beth comes in, a big bag in her hands. She doesn’t notice me at first. 

“Beth!” I exclaim, and she lifts her head, nose a little red from the cold outside. 

“Hey, oh sorry, I didn’t have time to go earlier today” 

“That’s completely fine, here, let me take it” I state, walking over and taking the bag from her hands as she starts undressing. 

“My brother didn’t bother you?” 

I look over at him, and he just gives a small laugh, shaking his head and putting his hands up defensively. 

“No, he was fine” 

“Good, now, let's go” She smiles, leading me away from him, into their living room. She finds a couple of bowls, letting me distribute the snack in them as she works on getting the movie going. 

“Okay, so I know you’re not a scary movie-person, but I know this one is really good, so please, keep an open mind” 

I laugh a little, thinking back on the fact that Josh is the one who actually picked this out. 

“I’ll keep an open mind then” 

“Great” 

The movie starts, and we both sit down, a blanket over us as the lights dim. At first, the movie seems fine, the occasional jump scare, which scares me much more than it does Beth. Still, I keep watching, body tense and uncomfortable, but I can’t take my eyes off it. We’re in the middle when someone gets violently cut up, and the camera doesn’t bother to show us anything else than the blood and flesh flying everywhere, the gore not stopping. I take a breath, pulling my eyes from the screen and standing up. 

“I just need to use the bathroom”

“Gonna puke?”

I laugh a little, the tension in my shoulders easing as she talks. 

“No, but if there’s no important information in this sequence, please feel free to skip it, I'll be quick” I say, already making my way to the yellow-lighted hallway. It's light, in contrast to the room I was just in, and that makes me ease up a little more. Gosh, if this was to keep going, I wouldn’t dare walking home tonight. 

Suddenly, I hear a click, and the light goes away, leaving me in the dark hallway. I stop, looking around, unsure about what just happened. Another breath escapes my lips, reminding me that I can’t keep holding my breath everytime something startling happens. The hallway looks empty both ways, so I continue further, crossing my fingers that the light in the bathroom at least works. 

Before I can react, a couple of strong arms grab me from behind, caging me. I’m about to yell out, but as if anticipating it, the hand goes over my mouth, muffling my screams. I’m slammed into the wall, not too hard, luckily, but I close my eyes before the impact arrives. As I open them again, a smiling Josh is standing in front of me, biting his lips to hold in his laugh. My heart is still beating fast, breaths coming in and out in a rapid manner. I grab his hand roughly, dragging it off my mouth. 

“Joshua Washington! Are you fucking insane??” 

He bursts out laughing, arms against the wall beside me, holding himself up as he leans over. I shake my head, mouth still a little open in shock, whilst he can’t stop laughing. 

“Maybe, but you should’ve seen your face!” He chuckles, one of his hands going to his stomach to compose himself. It’s probably hurting right now from all the laughter. 

“Joshua! What the hell is wrong with you!?” 

“Okay, okay, calm down, just a little prank on my part” He smiles, finally calming down. 

“I have been watching a fucking horror movie, and you pull this shit?”

He bites his lip again, tilting his head a bit to examine me. 

“Oh, come on now, you’re totally thinking it’s funny” 

“No, I’m not” 

“Or you’re into it or something…”

“Wait, what, no I’m not, what kind of sick-”

Before I can process what’s happening, his lips are on me. I feel his breath, his body close, soft lips moving ove mine. My heart is still beating rapidly, but oddly enough, it calms with the way he’s touching me. Tender and carefully, not like himself at all. His hand goes to my waist, body pressing mine into the wall, opening his mouth a little. I hear a little groan leaving his throat. He pulls away, faces close as his eyes go over me, looking up and down. I almost think he looks a little vulnerable, but his signature smirk finds its way to his lips again. 

“Well then, calmer now?” 

I look at him, confused, conflicted. I scoff, shaking my head a bit. 

“No, I think I need a little more help” I state, hand going to the back of his neck, pulling him into me again. Capturing his lips on mine, already opening my mouth. He does the same, one hand on my hips, pulling me into him. 

“Hey, finished in the bathroom soon? I’ve paused the movie, the gore is over!” Beth shouts from the living room. We both pull away from each other and look over to the living room, luckily not seeing her there. I look back at him, seeing his chest heaving, hot breaths coming from his mouth. He turns, looking into my eyes. 

“Guess we better finish calming you down later” He smiles, pushing himself off me and the wall, walking back to his room.

Until Dawn Remake all totems

Ranking all the characters from Until Dawn based on how many unique totems each of them can find along with also all the visions they provide.

1) ℳ𝒾𝓀ℯ 𝓂𝓊𝓃𝓇ℴℯ

We can find while playing as him a total of 12 totems. Earning him the first place. He can find:

Danger 1: a herd of deer.

Fortune 1: an injured Jessica waking up on a collapsed elevator shaft.

Loss 2: Jessica falling down the elevator shaft with her jaw ripped off.

Hunger 1: Hannah weakly crawling towards a makeshift grave in the mines.

Fortune 3: Matt recovering in the mines with a flare gun shell near him.

Guidance 3: Mike and Sam climbing up out of water.

Hunger 2: Hannah wandering in the mines, then collapsing in pain as her vision shifts from human to a Wendigo's.

Danger 2: Sam entering the lodge basement as an unknown man follows her.

Guidance 5: Chris holding a gun to his own head and about to shoot.

Loss 4: a wendigo smashing Matt’s face in.

Hunger 4: Hannah, now transformed into a Wendigo, chasing a deer before pouncing on it.

Death 3: Mike reluctantly striking his lighter, starting the explosion and sacrificing himself.

Between all of this, Guidance 5 is the best one. Top 2 best totem in the game hands down as this one will help you save Chris from one of his most common deaths.

Loss 2 is another helpful one since it helps the player figure out that Jessica is in deep trouble and they need to act fast while playing as Mike.

Fortune 1 is also helpful since it will tell you that Jessica is alive despite the elevator collapsing with her on top.

Fortune 3 can also be somewhat useful since, if you pay close attention, you will see the flare gun right next to Matt. There is, however, another totem much better at helping the player save Matt.

Finally, death totem 3 can also be helpful for Mike since it will tell the player that he is willing to sacrifice himself so they will act more wisely in the decisions they make.

2) ℰ𝓂𝒾𝓁𝓎 𝒟𝒶𝓋𝒾𝓈

Despite not having a lot of playtime as her, she can find 6 totems in total. All of hers are unique and not shared with any other character. In particular, she can find:

Danger 3: Jessica painfully falling next to Matt in the mines.

Loss 3: the stranger gets killed as Chris watches in the distance.

Loss 5: Mike burning to death in an explosion.

Death 5: Emily getting shot in the eye.

Fortune 4: Mike about to shoot someone, but ultimately refuses.

Danger 6: Emily squeezing into the gap with the flare.

A decent amount of options for her. Definitely inferior to Mike but she still has some good ones.

Danger 3 will make the player tense in the segment with Matt and Jessica.

Death 5 will definitely help the player understand that the gun will kill Emily and it won’t be like it happened with Chris.

Fortune 4 can be helpful at making the right decision and helping the player understand that not shooting Emily is the right thing to do.

3) 𝒮𝒶𝓂 𝒢𝒾𝒹𝒹𝒾𝓃𝔤𝔰

She can find a total of 6 totems as well, but three are shared with other characters so I’ll put her in third place. In particular she can find:

Guidance 1: a bird landing on a stump. (Shared with Chris).

Guidance 2: Sam running up to the elevator shaft. (Shared with chris)

Death 6: Sam grabbed by a Wendigo as she is impaled through the stomach.

Hunger 5 : Hannah, now transformed into a Wendigo, dragging Jessica through the snow as she tries to escape.

Danger 5: a Wendigo leaping inside the lodge and chasing the survivors. (Shared with Josh)

Hunger 6: Hannah, now transformed into a Wendigo, grabbing and lifting Josh by the neck as he resists.

Honestly, hers aren’t very good unfortunately. The only somewhat useful one is death 6 but it’s very clear to figure out that failing any of the “don’t move” segments will result in her death.

The hunger totems are really cool and they show the player Hannah’s story after falling down the mines but, gameplay wise, they don’t offer any help.

Guidance 1 is a tutorial totem and even the game tells you the right thing to do.

Guidance 2 is helpful at not getting Sam caught but it’s not a big deal at the end.

Danger 5 is one of the worst totems since it’s misleading. If you close the door it will take more time for the wendigos to come upstairs and the first “don’t move” will be longer, putting Mike’s life in danger for more time.

4) 𝒞𝒽𝓇𝒾𝓈 ℋ𝒶𝓇𝓉𝓁ℯ𝓎

In total, he can find 6 totems but, despite all the moments we get to play as him, he only has 2 unique totems in total. All the totems he can find being:

Guidance 1: a bird landing on a stump. (Shared with Sam).

Guidance 2: Sam running up to the elevator shaft. (Shared with Sam).

Loss 1: Emily screaming as she burns to death in an explosion.

Guidance 4: Mike petting a wolf. (shared with Ashley)

Death 4: Chris getting grabbed and killed from the ceiling in the mines.

Fortune 2: Matt outside the mine, cautiously looking back at the banging door. (Shared with Ashley).

His options are really weak.

Guidance 1 is a tutorial totem and even the game tells you the right thing to do.

Guidance 2 is helpful at not getting Sam caught but it’s not a big deal at the end.

Guidance 4 will help you understand that Wolfie isn’t a threat.

His death totem is too hard to understand and figure out where he is. If it hadn’t been classified as a death totem (which shows the death of the character who finds it), I wouldn’t have even understood who was shown in the vision.

Fortune 2 kinda breaks the rules because it’s something that can happen only if Jessica is dead or has been abandoned by Matt.

5) ℳ𝒶𝓉𝓉 𝒯𝒶𝓎𝓁ℴ𝓇

Matt can find 4 totems in total, one of which is shared with another character. He can find:

Death 2: Matt falling to his death off a cliff.

Danger 4: Emily trying unsuccessfully to reach for Matt's hand.

Guidance 6: Mike barricading the door with a locker.

Fortune 6: a Wendigo inching closer to Sam as she stays still. (Shared with Jessica).

His totems are honestly some of the best options between all characters.

Danger 4 is the best totem in the game as it will help you save Matt from his most common death.

Guidance 6 will help you save Wolfie while controlling Mike.

Fortune 6, if you pay really close attention, you can see Mike in the back. This can help the player understand that choosing the option of saving Mike will not result in Sam sacrificing herself.

So yeah, the last two aren’t really easy to understand but just for the danger totem alone, i’ll say that Matt has some of the best options totem wise.

6) 𝒜𝓈𝒽𝓁ℯ𝓎 ℬ𝓇ℴ𝓌𝓃

Ashley can also find in total 4 totems but two of those are shared with Chris, so she also has two unique totems. This being:

Guidance 4: Mike petting a wolf. (Shared with Chris)

Hunger 3: Hannah, now transformed into a Wendigo, heading toward the mine exit.

Fortune 2: Matt outside the mine, cautiously looking back at the banging door. (Shared with Chris)

loss 6: Josh's head about to be crushed by a Wendigo.

I think hers are the worst ones.

The only useful being guidance 4 since it will help you understand that Wolfie isn’t a threat.

Fortune 2 kinda breaks the rules because it’s something that can happen only if Jessica is dead or has been abandoned by Matt.

Loss 6 doesn’t help you in any way at saving Joss.

7) 𝒥ℴ𝓈𝒽 𝒲𝒶𝓈𝒽𝒾𝓃𝔤𝔱𝔬𝔫

Josh can only find 2 totem in chapter 10 when we get control of him for the first and only time. One of this is also shared with another character.

Fortune 5: the survivors looking back at the burning lodge.

Danger 5: a Wendigo leaping inside the lodge and chasing the survivors. (Shared with Sam)

Danger 5 is one of the worst totems since it’s misleading. If you close the door it will take more time for the wendigos to come upstairs and the first “don’t move” will be longer, putting Mike’s life in danger for more time.

Fortune 5 doesn’t help the player in any way, unfortunately.

Just like how i said for Matt, if you pay really close attention, you can see Mike in the back. This can help the player understand that choosing the option of saving Mike will not result in Sam sacrificing herself.

You've made it clear that you're not dependable when it comes to caring for the one thing Sam is most passionate about, so now she'll do the job for you. It's in your best interest to let yourself be taken care of. Sam never gives up.

- Chris worships you too much to question your judgement on anything. Who is he to tell you how to live your life? He's lucky you allow him to breathe the same air as you, frankly. Still, he hates the way you treat yourself. You're everything that's wonderful and perfect in the world but you neglect all your daily needs. You don't eat. You miss sleep! You overwork yourself. - Emily is angered by the way you treat yourself. As if you're nothing. The fact that you're hers should be enough reason to take care of yourself alone. Still, you seem to relish self-neglect and abuse. She takes care of you, but lets you know the entire time that you should be doing it yourself. Not because she's unwilling to do it, or dislikes doing it, but because she worries. What would happen if she wasn't around? How far would this habit of neglect go? With the spiteful way she speaks, you'd never guess it was love fueling her actions and not irritation.

- Mike as a person can be separated into two distinct people: Mike before you and Mike after you. He's a much better person after he becomes obsessed with you. You bring out the selfless caretaker in him. In a lot of ways, he thinks you're helpless. Truly, you may not even be all that bad at caring for yourself. But Mike worships you in his own way: you deserve the best and anything less being provided for you irritates him. It's unlikely you'll ever meet Mike's standards when it comes to self-care. That's no real issue though, Mike will happily do it for you. In fact, he insists. Make it easier on yourself and let him pamper you. At least this way being taken care of is still "your" choice.

- Beth, despite being the youngest Washington sibling, is truly the most responsible. Taking care of others is nothing foreign to her. She'll rise easily to the occasion of being your caretaker, but will never make you feel as if you're a burden. She takes care of you quietly. Sometimes it'll be easy to forget she's doing it at all. That's the way Beth cares for everyone. For you, she'd go to the moon and back without so much as a grunt.

- Jessica is a little at a loss. She's used to people taking care of her, not the other way around. Still, she loves you and you worry her. So she tries to step up and be mature for once in her life. She'll actually communicate with you, unlike the other yanderes. She wants to know what you think you need help with. That's where she'll start, with instructions. From there she'll branch out into helping you fix the other aspects of self-care that you neglect. This is new territory for Jessica, but for you she'd learn to do handstands on water if you needed her to do it.

- Matt has been dutifully helping you with self-care long before he was your boyfriend. The only thing that's changed is that he was more afraid to push you when he was just your friend. Now, as your boyfriend, he's a little more brave when it comes to doing what needs to be done. "I really think you should eat just a little more, honey." / "Could we go to bed? It's pretty late... you have class in the morning." / "You just got home from work, let me do that." / The longer you're together the braver he'll be about taking care of you. While he wants you to be happy, he knows deep down that you being healthy is more important. So even if it irritates you, even if you snap at him sometimes, he'll push himself to take care of you. For a people pleaser like Matt, it's a big step.

What would be every UD characters love language? Like, the type they like that their partner do and what they do to their partner?

Ohhh, I really like this one, and I have thought of it before. These are just personal opinions, but I'll try to explain some of them. This also features Hannah and Beth!

Matt: I definitely think Matt’s love language is words of affirmation. He seems like the guy who’s secretly very insecure, and therefore needs the extra reassurance. Tell him how you feel about him by saying how you love his kindness and generosity, he’ll melt like putty in your arms. This guy will get so incredibly flustered if you give him a genuine compliment. 

Mike: I think many people believe that his love language is touch, but I don’t agree. I believe it’s acts of service. He’ll do small things here and there. Get you a drink or  food when you didn’t even ask, carry you up the mountain if you’re tired, and drape a blanket over you when you sleep. He loves doing things, feeling useful and wanted. If he just gets over his commitment issues, he’ll do every small or big thing for you. 

Josh: I feel like this one is kinda obvious, but I definitely think touch is his love language. I’m not just talking about being sexually intimate, but also the small touches. Holding hands, carrying you, resting his arm somewhere on you at all times. It grounds him, reminding him that you’re real and not a figment of his imagination. This also applies to small pecks and kisses throughout the day. 

Chris: I find this one very difficult, and want to say both quality time and touch (always the small ones), but I settled on acts of service for this man too. He loves doing things for you, again, feeling useful and needed. He gets reassurance that you need him when he does these things for you. He always makes you a cup of tea, and loves to help you with different chores throughout the day. 

Sam: This one was quite obvious (I think), but I settled quickly on quality time. She wants to do stuff with you all the time, and often physical activities like hiking and climbing. That’s not to say that she likes the less physical activities as well, such as cooking dinner together or watching a movie together. When you’re apart, she’s always eager to send you pictures of what she’s doing and telling you how she wishes you were with her. 

Ashley: I’m a bit stumped on this, but I think it’s physical touch. Holding hands, cuddling and kissing is the way to her heart. She likes when you two do different things together, like reading separate books while entangled on the couch. She likes going hand in hand on late night walks and is definitely a hugger at heart. 

Emily: This one is gift-giving. She loves giving them, as well as getting them. She gifts from the heart, remembering that one time weeks ago when you said you liked a necklace. She adores when she gets the classic romantics like flowers, chocolates and teddy bears. I promise you that she also bought matching bracelets with your names engraved with them. Even better, they go with absolutely everything. 

Jess: I stand firm on this one, and that is words of affirmation. She has always felt like a piece of ass, like an object or just something beautiful for the eyes. She needs to feel like she’s more than that, that you love all her other sides, including her personality. She would melt if you told her how kind her soul is, how passionate and loving you find her. 

Hannah: She also loves gift-giving. It’s never necessarily things bought, but rather small projects and crafts. She gives small loving notes, occasionally writes a poem, telling you how you light up the darkness etc. She also loves getting small gifts like hand-picked flowers and a cute notebook. She’ll display the book on the bookshelf and dry the flowers to make a forever bouquet or small trinkets. 

Beth: This woman is an acts of service person. She’ll drape the blanket over you when you sleep, help you with your eyeliner and give you one of her sweaters when you’re cold. She loves prepping breakfast, making snacks for a movie night and surprising you with a picnic date.

tuesday, 7:56 pm.

both you and josh had been planning this night for what felt like weeks—a movie night. to be frank, neither of you are very coordinated when planning hangouts, but when you stepped inside and saw nothing laid out—blankets, snacks, drinks—or even a recorded movie ready—you knew this was going to be a mess, a small frown tugging at the corners of your lips.

sometimes things are better done spur of the moment! josh sheepishly let you in, insisting he forgot, but you knew he didn't—he couldn't have. texts back and forth every day talking about how excited you were proved that—not to mention hannah and beth were trying to tidy things up in the living room, waving at you with smiles on their faces. "i'm sorry—really—i'll get popcorn going," he rushed out, shaking his head softly as he made his way into the kitchen. you could've sworn he was blushing. from embarrassment. obviously. you didn't mind in the long run. you were here, and now the party was really going to get started. "it's alright, josh."

you sat criss-cross on the washington’s couch, remote in hand as you scrolled absentmindedly through the channels. josh, on the other hand, was in the kitchen whipping up popcorn. you were supposed to be looking for movies… but nothing seemed to be on tonight. nothing interesting, at least. it bored you to the point you were lost in thought while clicking the down button. their house was one you'd been in many times, and honestly you treated it like your own—albeit a bit better since you wanted to make a good impression. every time you arrived you just felt an immense sense of comfort, like you were wrapped in a warm blanket the second your foot hit the hardwood floor. but i guess that's just the effect the washington's have. on everything, really. whenever you get texts from them you're unable to hide the smile from your face.

the subtle pops and snaps of the kernels filled your ears, as well as the overwhelming smell of butter. it was a nice contrast to the frustration you were feeling... just seeing the same shit as you switched channels—almost to the point where you just wanted to take that dumb, plastic remote and throw it at the screen. deep breaths, you said. just take a deep breath.

click after click, channel after channel, nothing. the only things coming up were reality tv, animal planet—hell, judge judy. honestly, you could've settled for something dumb like 'ridiculousness' or 'the impractical jokers', but you desperately wanted to find a horror movie. you know. that cliché movie scene where the girl clings to the guys arm helplessly as she pretends to be scared—nuzzling her face into his shoulder to 'hide' from the absolute terror on screen. and then the boy consoles her, telling her that there's nothing to be afraid of, but deep down the girl just wanted an excuse to be by him. -

“aye, ya find anything?” he walked up behind you, a dopey grin on his face. his hands rested just behind your head, leaning on the couch. his voice broke you out of your small fantasy... unfortunately. you glanced behind yourself, thumb still auto-pressing like a zombie. “nope. no luck,” you sigh, scrolling so far you reached static.

“mm, well, i'm pretty sure i have dvds lying around somewhere,” he shrugged, patting your shoulder gently as he stepped back.

“now that's more like it.” you smiled with relief, setting the remote down by your side as your hands came to rub your face. "any idea where they are?"

you stood up from the couch, circling it as you followed him back into the kitchen. josh hummed softly, trying to think whilst pouring the popcorn into a medium sized tin bowl.

“they’re either in my room or my sisters, i’d assume,” he concluded, shooting you a knowing look. “we’re all movie people.”

you nodded, walking over to the fridge as you grabbed two bottles of water. “i can go check with hannah and beth,” you smiled.

hannah and beth. they had left the living room in silence the second they were done organizing—no hello or hug like usual. it was a bit strange, but you chose not to question it. i mean, they were only helping him, you know.

your hand lingered on the fridge handle for a moment, closing it quietly as you walked back to the couch. the cold of the water bottles were beginning to burn your hand—a sensation you never enjoyed. quickly, you set them down on coasters on the coffee table, wiping the condensation on your pants.

“so you don’t want to come to my room with me?” he teased, following after you as he brought the popcorn out.

“ew, josh,” a slight scoff escaped your lips, faint blush dusting your cheeks. “i’d much rather talk to your sisters.”

you feigned annoyance, but the smile creeping up on your face clearly said otherwise. it was incredibly hard to hide the fact his little comment made your heart race and all of your blood rush to your face.

silence fell between the two of you—a tension filled silence. your heartbeat echoed in your ears, trying to steady your breathing. his eyes scanned over your face, and suddenly the world seemed to stop. the glow of the tv seemed to illuminate his face perfectly—accentuating all his features. it was like he was luring you in. a sort of magnetic pull that just had you absolutely captivated.

conflicting feelings arose in your mind. it was a known fact that you liked josh—but should you act on them? your heart wanted you to walk forward and close the distance, but your mind was unsure. you were good friends, sure, but it was far-fetched to say he felt the same. he was unobtainable in your book.

“suit yourself,” he grinned, shrugging nonchalantly.

the second time you were broken out of your thoughts.

his voice was smooth—the way he replied igniting a spark within yourself. he turned around almost as soon as he spoke, disappearing into the hallway that led to his room. as his footsteps slowly dissipated, you finally exhaled. honestly, you didn’t even know you were holding your breath.

but, did he always look at you like that?

- the walls of their home were decorated in a plethora of family photos, some of just them individually. there weren't many of josh, but the ones they did have up were cute, mostly him as a little boy with a goofy grin on his face. excited about his first day of kindergarten—catching his first fish—all his milestones. you couldn't help but look at all of them as you wandered around in attempt to find hannah or beth. you envied the washington's a bit—a well off family with a big house that just so happened to own an entire fucking mountain, not to mention the lodge and other buildings on that property. (dare i say nepo-children?). no matter how many times you were in that house, you only seemed to remember where hannah's room was, aside from the living room. your footsteps were quiet as you navigated, walking up the staircase with your left hand on the railing. as you reached the top of the steps, you b-lined it to hannah's room, knocking on her door gently. you could the muffled sounds of laughter, followed by soft steps as the door swung open—beth greeted you with a tight hug. hannah was sitting on the floor in front of a line-up of nail polishes. fun! "hey," she grinned as your name fell from her lips, "long time no see! i thought you and josh were supposed to be watching a movie?" she let her hands fall to your sides, holding your arms as she gently shook your body back and forth. "yeah, we were going to—" you smiled, laughing a bit as she took your hand and brought you into the room, "i came to ask if you guys had any dvds. he said they might be in here." the twins shared knowing glances, and they both nodded as they looked back at you—almost in sync. it was scary. were you first hand experiencing twin telepathy? they had a full-on conversation with their eyes alone. "they're in my room, i'll take you." beth took your hand in hers again, leading you out of hannah's room almost as soon as you arrived. you quickly waved to hannah, mouthing 'bye' as you were practically dragged through the endless hallway. a couple turns away and you were in front of her door. a small, mischievous smile tugged at the corner of her lips, glancing between you and the door as she opened it. "can i tell you something?" it came off as a question, but you knew she was going to say it anyway. beth walked straight to her bedside, picking up a stack of movie cases. you stood in the doorway, leaning on the doorframe with you arms crossed. a bit skeptical, you nodded, "of course." she almost seemed giddy at your reply, walking calmly over to you to hand you the tapes. there was an expression you couldn't quite read on her face. it was like she was excited—but also like she wanted to hide it at the same time. your arms opened to take the dvds, holding them to your chest as you read the titles from the top down, slipping the case to the bottom of the stack once you were done. "i'm pretty sure josh has a thing for you," beth started, tucking her bottom lip in between her teeth. she was trying to shut herself up, but honestly she couldn't keep it in any longer. your eyes flicked between the names of the movies and her face, your brows furrowing. she knew something you didn't. "what do you mean?" curiosity laced your voice but your eyes never met. you avoided her gaze. she leaned on the wall beside you, watching as you were suddenly so focused on reading all of the movie titles. "well, for starters, you are the only girl he's ever invited over to the house," beth nodded, sticking out a hand to count how many things she was listing off. she stuck her thumb out. "the only time he ever sees sam and the others are when we go to the lodge or hang out as a group." you hummed a small 'mhm', wanting her to continue. to say you were intrigued would be an understatement—you wanted to hear more, needed to hear more. just a half hour ago you were trying to convince yourself it was too good to be true, and now you weren't so sure. "and, he keeps asking han and i what kind of things you're into." she stuck out her pointer finger.

resting her head on the wall behind her as she looked up at the ceiling, she continued: "he's been listening to a lot of fleetwood mac ever since we mentioned it to him."

a small laugh managed to escape you as you listened to her, followed by a gentle nudge on her part. "i'm serious, i've never heard someone listen to gold dust woman so much!"

“maybe he’s just being a good friend—y’know, i always try to get into—“ beth placed her pointer finger to your lips, a quick and silly way to silence you.

“can you just trust me on this one?” her voice was desperate but playfull, her hand dropping to her hip.

a beat of silence fell between you two. it wasn’t awkward, just giving you time to think about it all. and then it dawned on you.

he’d been flirting with you the entire time.

stolen glances, the way his hand brushed against your own, little presents here and there—everything began to make sense. and you looked like a fool. blush instantly rushed to your cheeks, shaking your head as your eyes met beth’s.

“and you’ve known this for how long?”

“about 4 months. he begged us to not say anything—i swore on my life.”

another beat of silence.

“does josh know that i—“ you began, cut off by beth once more, this time by her words.

“nope, not to my knowledge. unless han said something, he is also oblivious.” she reassured, placing a hand on your shoulder.

“is it as painful as watching chris and ashley dance around the topic?” you questioned, tilting your head slightly with a bashful smile on your face.

“worse, actually, way worse. you guys are always so close to making a move, and then you chicken out.”

you shook your head once more, then glanced back down at the movies. they were all comedy except for one—‘the shining’. you’ve already seen it, quite a few times actually, but it wouldn’t hurt to play it. you politely handed the other movies back to beth, tucking the horror case underneath your arm.

her palm fell from your shoulder, taking the movies into her hands as she returned them to her bedside, then right back to the spot she was standing at.

“okay, but, that still doesn’t explain why he ‘forgot’,” you put air quotes up, “about our hangout today. is something up?”

“well,” she sighed, glancing to the floor before she met your eyes again. “i honestly don’t know. i think you just make him nervous, he was kind of just sitting around fidgeting all day.”

you nodded, butterflies swirling in your stomach. you made josh nervous? hell, he made you nervous. palms all sweaty any time you got too close—your body naturally heating up—not to mention how you always get red in the face when he stares at you for too long.

“promise you won’t say anything.”

“i won’t.”

eventually, you had made your way back to the living room, this time ignoring the family photos and instead trying to figure out if you were going to say something to josh. each step you took matched your heart beat, nice and steady. that was until you spotted josh on the couch, eyes closed.

your heart fluttered a bit just seeing him. despite only being apart for a couple minutes, you couldn’t help but miss him. it was a familiar feeling, unfortunately, it came with the burden of having a crush on him.

as if he felt your presence (undoubtedly heard your steps), his eyes opened as he turned his head to look in your direction—immediately sitting up straight with a small smile.

“there she is,” he stood up, walking over to meet you in the middle, “i’m guessing they had the movies?”

“mhm,” you nod, handing him the case. “you’ve seen ‘the shining’ before, right?”

he shook his head, taking the dvd into his hand, examining it. his eyes glanced between you and the writing on the case. "horror?" he questioned, sauntering over to the tv—you followed after. "would you rather watch 'pretty woman' or 'ferris bueller's day off' again?" you teased, leaving him to put the movie in while you sat on the couch, sneaking a few pieces of popcorn. josh chuckled gingerly, popping the disc from the holder straight into the dvd player. you changed the hdmi until it displayed the previews for other movies, signifying that you were on the right one. he strolled back over to you, sitting on the other side of the couch. comfortable silence fell between you two as he skipped the previews, immediately turning the movie on. he seemed invested—which was good—but you were starting to get bored. it was a great movie, don't get me wrong, but having seen it a few times... it just wasn't something that sparked your interest. compared to the other movies, this was the best bet. "scared?" you turned your head to look at him, a small smirk on your face. "need someone to hold onto?" "yes, definitely," he retorted, a dramatic flare grazing his voice. josh almost immediately moved closer to you, your knees touching as his arm hung on the spine of the couch—behind your body, of course. "what would i do without you?" you rolled your eyes, graciously accepting the newfound warmth that spread through your body. yes, from the proximity, but also because your heart was racing once more. he seemed so eager to be beside you. which is a good thing. - minutes passed and you found yourself watching josh's face more than the movie. he was completely entranced—hyper-focused on the screen in front of him, oblivious to your fond eyes examining his every expression. and over that time, your positions had changed. his arm was now resting around your shoulders, pulling you (basically) as close as possible, with your legs touching, both of you glued to each other. you could feel each time he was startled—his body tensing—then relaxing. eventually you decided to watch the movie, your eyes returning to the bloody horror that was being displayed. your head rested on his chest, and you wrapped your arms around his abdomen—a lazy hug, but also because it was more comfortable this way. you swore you could feel his heart rate pick up. "scared?" he mocked, glancing down at you. you scoffed, shaking your head gently against his body. “if anyone’s scared it’s you,” you retorted, looking up at him through your eyelashes.

josh looked back down at you, this time holding the eye contact. both of your eyes simultaneously flicked between the others eyes and lips—the two of you thinking the same thing.

your lips parted almost instinctively, both of you leaning in—

“am i interrupting something?”

hannah’s voice cut through the tension like a knife—neither of you even heard her coming. you sat up quickly, blush evident on your cheeks.

“not at all,” josh replied, his arm still around hour shoulders—he seemed rather calm—but his body was tense against yours.

you didn’t want to admit it, but it was so excruciatingly obvious she interrupted something. with the way she was grinning, she had to have known it too.

a small smile fell on your lips, looking at her, that same mischievous smile that her sister wore was now on her face.

beth was right. you and josh dance around the topic too much—at this point, you need to come up with your own choreography for it. the fact you two almost kissed—faces so close—yet so far.
