Getting up to speed with Multiversus

For those of you who haven't heard, Multiversus will be officially released on the 28th of May 2024; about a month from now.

Multiversus is a Smash-like fighting game featuring fighters from various Warner Bros. properties, including Finn and Jake from Adventure Time. A public beta was released in 2022. The full release has been rewritten in Unreal Engine 5, and yesterday the developers published an article revealing some of the new fighting mechanics, namely parries and dash attacks. The full release will be free to play, just like the public beta.

Finn and Jake will receive new animations for dash attacks and parries. Finn might also be receiving a new costume featuring his bionic arm and the Night Sword. The Night Sword model has already been found in the game via data mining, and his bionic arm was seen in a couple of recent promotional videos.

Fern and Cake are also playable, as costumes of Finn and Jake. I wonder if more Adventure Time costumes will be added in the future, or perhaps even a new fighter. Who would you most like to see added?

Here’s an interesting thought experiment. I was reading your post about the Commando app Beta 2.1 vs 3.1 debate and whether there was an Alpha app or a Beta 1.1. What if there was an Alpha app and Douglas tried it with Adam, the original bionic but it didn’t work right and caused some brain damage which is why Adam is like that? Douglas then realized that if he was going to put the Commando app in a bionic’s head that he needed to completely rewire their brain to be able to handle actually having information downloaded like a computer. By the time he realized this Bree was too far along so he turned his attention to the next subject. He made Chase more computer like and did a bunch of stuff that would allow Chase to handle actual changes to his brain from outside influences. It’s why Chase has the Commando and override app. The other two can’t have actual apps in their heads like that because they weren’t created to handle things like that.

And this is such an interesting thought that I love!! These are all great connecting ideas too, the idea that Chase has these apps because he has a computer in his mind to process and handle it all unlike his siblings and not just because his main ability is super intelligence. After all, he does have more room for upgrades than his siblings. I love this idea!

I do wonder though if after Douglas were to hypothetically do this he went and gave Adam and Bree some from of compatibility to their chips since Chase can connect to them essentially through bluetooth. But him having the computer not only for his intelligence but also for his apps and to process the use and control of these apps alongside his normal brain is really something to think about. Not only that, but he does have a bunch of wiring inside his head and a bunch of different scanners from his bionic eyes that are also linked to his computer system too (identifying people, fingerprint scanning, etc.)

And with the Commando App, we see that in both versions, especially the first one we see in 1x03, that there is a bunch of coding that appears during the activation and deactivation of the app. This almost seems to imply too that the app truly is still not 100% complete, which matches with the Beta version we see.

We also see that the Commando App has an entire targeting system connected to Spike's vision. In the first version this comes in the form of Spike scanning the threat's face before completely locking onto the target as an "imminent threat."

In the second version, this just comes in the form of a literal target being in Spike's vision. He also has a gauge that measures his aggression level, which obviously varies for him. Not only that, but on the right side of Spike's vision he has gauges to measure speed and visibility presumably of his target, which is kind of scary lol.

A mystery however is why does the chip interrupter not only not work on the Commando App, but instead makes Spike more aggressive? It most likely has something to do with affecting the computer system in Chase. Maybe it doesn't work because Spike is an app and is potentially more linked to the computer in Chase than his chip? Is it just a glitch in general? Is Spike's aggression increase also a glitch or is it a defense mechanism against an outside influence? Who knows!

One last thing to note is the fact that after Spike takes a hard hit from Perry, it actually causes an error in Chase's computer system and glitches the Commando App out and forces it to disengage. Maybe this is something that would "naturally" happen or this is another example of the incomplete app being unstable (because one would imagine that this caliber of app and its purpose of fighting shouldn't be able to glitch out and shut down after a hard hit)

Another intriguing thought is that a few of Chase's abilities are apps but are considered "abilities" like the Commado App or his Magnetism App, if that makes sense. Some of his "abilities" are directly related to his computer system as apps compared to his normal "abilities" like his laser bo or forcefield. I just thought that that was interesting to point out because I never really realized that until now!

There's a lot to think about with this, and since we were never meant to dive this deep into because it's a Disney XD show, there's a lot to play around with!

In the morning you find yourself in the kitchen, talking to Wanda who's making pancakes for breakfast.

"So, it seems someone had an interesting night. Want to talk about it?" Wanda asks as she flips a pancake.

An interesting night? More like an amazing night... you chuckle to yourself. "How do you know? Did you see it in my mind or something?"

"I don't do that unless other people's lives depend on it. You're just easy to read. I can feel your excitement," she winks at you before sliding a couple of pancakes in your plate.

"Oh," you think back on the late-night chat you had with Bucky, at how amazing the kiss was between the two of you. "Bucky and I kissed..." you grin at her.

"Yes! Finally, something good happened in the tower for once. How was it?" She leans over the kitchen nook, staring at you intently.

"It was amazing Wanda. He was so incredibly sweet and considerate, asking me how he could make me comfortable. He didn't grab me, didn't push me into anything... Honestly, it was just perfect. And the kiss - I swear I saw stars when our lips met," you whisper eyes lighting up at the memory.

"Awe, you two are adorable. Natasha's going to be so jealous when she finds out she missed this! I told her it was bound to happen. Even I can see there's something between the two of you." Walking back to the pancakes, she continues to heap more onto a separate plate. When you woke up this morning, you found out Natasha had been assigned to an unexpected mission and had left at sunrise.

"Yeah, Bucky's just different, you know? Never in my wildest dreams would I think I'd be ready for someone new, but I guess life has its plans."

"Well, it makes sense that you two are good together. You both have had some crappy things happen to you in the past, maybe you two found each other so you could help each other. Make each other better..."

"Yeah, maybe. Jeeze, I'm getting ahead of myself, we haven't even been on a date yet." You take a bite of your pancake and hum in delight. "You make a mean pancake Wanda."

"Thanks, hon. Here let me add a couple more before the guys get here and eat everything." She quickly adds to your plate, making you wonder how you will ever be able to finish so much food. "Steve and Bucky went on their morning run. Sam decided to join them today so be prepared for a lot of complaining from him. He hates it when they run circles around him. They should be back any minute now."

Just as she's finished talking, you both hear loud voices coming towards the kitchen. "You two are going to kill me! I'm not a super soldier that can run super fast and has endurance for days! I'm just a normal man!"

"Sam, we told you to take your time. You didn't have to try and keep up with us." Steve says as the three of them enter the kitchen, making Wanda roll her eyes at them.

"I could have kept up if the Bionic Man over here wasn't running around like a puppy on a sugar rush!"

"Sorry Sam," Bucky says as he grins at you. "I had a good night."

"Yeah, I'd say," Wanda says under her breath, your eyes widening at her comment.

You know Steve must have heard her comment but, being the gentleman he is, he doesn't say anything and just smiles at you. Wanda hands each of the men a plate with pancakes, Bucky and Steve's plates piled high. Steve and Sam keep Wanda occupied at the counter while Bucky slowly walks to you. "May I?" He indicates to the empty seat next to you.

"Of course, have a seat."

He sets his plate down and then turns towards you, rubbing his jaw. "So, I have to ask. When you agreed to go on a date with me, was it just something you agreed to late at night, or do you really want to go on a date with me?"

"Yes, I really want to go out on a date with you," you softly touch his jaw, "can we go out tonight? Or are you Avengers busy tonight?"

He leans into your touch, smiling at you. "I don't care if we're busy or not. I'll pick you up at seven?"

"Perfect," you whisper to him as you both lean in for a quick kiss.

Just before seven he pulls up and finds you waiting for him. When he steps out of the car, he eyes you up and down, giving you a lopsided grin. "Doll, you look exquisite. But you didn't have to wait for me, I could have come in and walked you out."

"I didn't want Martha to give you trouble and convince you I'm not worth the effort." You bite your lip, nervous now that he's here. When was the last time you went out on a date?

"Hey, look at me." Your eyes shoot up to his. "I'm not afraid of that old broad, you are worth everything. I'm still astounded that you want to go out with me."

"You're so sweet Bucky." He opens the car door for you as you walk closer. Holding onto the door, he asks, "Can I get a kiss for being so sweet?"

He's grinning down at you, but the look in his eyes shows you how eager he is to be close to you once again. With your heels on, it's easier to reach up and slowly clasp your hands behind his neck and pull him closer, kissing him and showing him how much you missed him.

"Come on doll. Let's get out of the street before I get other ideas. I hope you are ok with Chinese. Heard from a birdie it's one of your favourites," he says as he helps you into the car. He quickly runs over to his seat.

"I love it! I'm betting Wanda is your informant right? Since Nat left early this morning?"

The corner of his mouth lifts. "Afraid not, doll. Natasha and I go way back, so she gave me the inside scoop first thing this morning."

"Yeah, she's a good friend. Wait - what do you mean you two go way back? I thought the team only found you a couple of months ago?"

Bucky's mouth sets in a hard line, his brows knitted. "Um, guess you don't know. He - I - I mean we met when we both were still in Hydra. The Winter Soldier taught a lot of the young Widows, Nat included. Took me a while to remember but she helped fill in the blanks." He glances at you, worried about how you would take the information.

"So I don't have to worry about competing with the Black Widow for your affection?" You pout playfully, making Bucky chuckle in surprise, once again relaxing his shoulders.

"No doll, I'm all yours."

When you arrive at the restaurant, Bucky charmingly opens the door for you, helping you out of the car and into the venue.

"I hear they have the best steamed pork buns here." His deep voice calls out as you glance down at the menu.

"Ooh! They're my favourite! Can we get some? I know they're expensive but they're so yummy!"

"Of course. We can get anything we want. If you decide you want everything on the menu we can get that too. Tony gave me this fancy credit card with a huge salary for going on missions. Want to help me make a dent in it?"

Eyes beaming with happiness, you and Bucky go over the whole menu, deciding on what you would like to order and share.

"I think we have enough food to feed a small army," you giggle. "Or a normal woman and a beefy super soldier, with some leftovers perhaps."

"Since you know me, I'm not going to pretend to be a gentleman and not eat everything on this table. But we'll definitely order more, just so we have leftovers. Everybody knows Chinese food tastes amazing the next day too..."

"Exactly! Bucky Barnes, you just might be the perfect man..." you both laugh, drinking your wine and eating when the food arrives.

"So, why were you up so late last night or rather this morning?" You question.

"Honestly, I don't sleep a lot. I... I still have a lot of nightmares, about being him again, about all the bad things I've done... I dream about being their puppet and going on missions again, about being back in that chair," his eyes are distant as he tells you, the memories never leaving his mind.

"Is Hydra - were they involved in your metal arm?"

"Uh, mostly yes. We, the Howling Commandos, were on a train high up on a mountain cliff, trying to stop Hydra. They had this advanced weaponry, and one blast opened the train wall. I fell off the train, into the icy snow, most likely hitting my arm on the way down. I thought I would die there from the cold. When I heard voices, I thought Steve had found me. But, as you can guess, it was Hydra. According to the files, by that time my arm was so damaged that they had to amputate it and decided to give me this," he wiggles his metal arm.

"I'm so sorry, Bucky. That- I can't even imagine what the past seventy years must have been like for you."

"Thanks, doll. I'm afraid to ask, but I'm pretty sure you can understand a little bit what it's been like. Your life hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows either. That's why you couldn't sleep last night, right?"

"A big part of it, yes. Last night I just remembered that my ex wouldn't let me have friends, he wanted me for himself. He would have done everything he could to remove people like Natasha and Wanda from my life. Definitely wouldn't have even allowed me to meet someone like you. Someone who could take him on and probably win."

"You didn't have any friends? For how long?"

You shake your head, "Nope, no friends. For as long as I was with him. The one friend who dared to reach out, who went to visit me to help me leave him, she didn't make it. He broke her jaw and when she was in ICU there was a mistake and they gave her penicillin, which she was allergic to. She died in the hospital. After that, he got a lot more violent until I got out..."

You look down and see a crack in his wine glass, his knuckles white with how hard he was trying to control himself.

"It's ok, Bucky. I got out..." you gently touch his fist, trying to calm him down.

His eyes darken, his expression is serious and somber. "Doll, you can't ever tell me his name. If I... If I can find him, I'll fucking kill him. And no one will ever discover his rotting corpse." He gently takes your hand, the cool metal an amazing contrast to your warm hand.

"I know Bucky. I know..." You both lean in for a short kiss, taking strength from each other's presence.

Your first date with Bucky turned out to last more than three hours, the conversation flowing between the two of you. You talked about all the serious things, like Bucky's mother and sister who had passed away while he had been Hydra's captive. You told him about the evening your ex forced you to say such awful things to your family, making sure you could never go to them for help, the disgust in yourself evident in your voice. But you also discussed trivial things like music and movies, your favourite colours and your favourite seasons.

Driving back to the shelter, you hold his right arm, playing with the veins popping out of his hand, your mind and stomach content at the amazing night the two of you had. "I had a great time tonight, thanks Bucky."

"I should be the one thanking you, doll. I'm honoured that such a beautiful woman would be willing to go out with an ancient man like me."

You giggle as he winks at you. "Guess I have a thing for older men," you can't help but tease him.

"Phew, that's a good thing. Think you can let this old man take you on a second date tomorrow?"

Pulling to a stop, he helps you out of the car once more. "Can I kiss you again, doll?" He slowly inches closer to you, his hands back in his pockets.

"I'd love to Bucky." You feel like your heart is going to burst out of your chest with how happy you are.

Instead of answering, you bridge the gap between the two of you and lean into him, running your fingers over his sculpted jaw before standing on your toes to kiss him, grasping onto his shirt to pull him closer.

His tongue strokes yours, deepening the kiss, pouring all the passion and desire you have for each other into it. You want to be as close as possible to him, you want to never let him go, you want him to... Breaking the kiss, you look up at him. His eyes are dark with desire, and only a small bit of blue can be seen.

"Hold me, Bucky. Please. I'm not afraid of you," he sees the trust in your eyes and slowly complies to your request. His metal hand grasps your waist, while his flesh hand cups your cheek as he kisses you again. Goosebumps form on your skin at his touch, his big hand grasping you from your ear to the back of your neck, pulling you impossibly closer. Breathing heavily, you both pour everything into the kiss, tasting each other.

At the hoot of a horn, you two pull apart, Bucky glaring at the cabbie cheering you on as he drives past. "You make me crazy, doll." His mouth curves into a smile, eyes twinkling with delight.

"Let me walk you-" you look up at him, wondering why he's quiet all of a sudden. He studies the shelter, seemingly sniffing the air and cocking his head to the side to listen. Before you even realise he's moved, he's already reached into the car's glove compartment and pulled out a gun.

Your heart is beating a thousand miles an hour. "No, I'm not leaving you Bucky." When he starts to reply, you interrupt him and repeat your answer. "I feel safer with you. And I need to know what's happening."

He says your name as he stares down at you making sure you are listening. "Something is wrong in there. I need you to climb in the car and drive to the tower, ok?"

He stares at you, making you worry he will press the issue. His metal hand rubs his forehead as he sighs. "Ok, but you do exactly what I say. Understood?" His voice is that of a Sergeant's, full of command.

"I understand," you reply instantly.

"I'll lead and you stay behind me. Grab onto my belt and don't let go. You got me?" he asks as he lifts your chin so your eyes meet his.

"Got it."

You grab onto his belt as he holds the gun firmly in his right hand, cupping it with his left. With darkness around you, the two of you step into the building, the doors wide open. Not a single lock in place. Slowly the two of you check every room, before starting to walk to the kitchen and dining area. You hear Bucky sniff once more. Reaching into his pocket with his left hand, he grasps his cell phone and hands it back to you.

"I need you to call Steve for me, Y/N. It's the same as yours, speed dial one. Tell him to get here now, I smell blood."

With a trembling hand, you do as he says. Steve answers on the second ring as you slowly advance behind Bucky on your way to the dining room.

"Hey, Buck -" Steve starts to say but you interrupt him.

"Steve, it's me Y/N. There's something wrong at the shelter. Bucky has his gun out and he says he smells blood. You need to get here right away."

You expect him to ask more questions but you can already hear Steve move around. "I'm on my way. Stay on the line with me, ok?" you agree as you hear him shout to Sam to go with him.

You can't stop your loud scream when you and Bucky finally enter the large dining room, your hand slipping from his belt. The first thing you see is all the blood on the floor, the bodies of the other women you live with lying stiff on the ground. Blood is spattered on the walls, some even on the ceiling. Bucky spins around and grasps you to him, pulling you into his chest, and blocking the rest of the room from you.

Nausea hounds you as you hear Steve shouting on the phone, your mind miles away. Bucky softly takes the phone from you, speaking to Steve. "Steve, you're going to need the police and ambulance too. And they need to bring body bags - a lot of them. I need to get Y/N out of here. I'm bringing her to the tower. "

"Come on Y/N," Bucky softly grabs your shoulders and turns you around. "We need to leave, now. You don't need to see the rest of it."

The rest of what? You thought you had seen everything... Everything except for what was behind Bucky's large back...

Bucky didn't expect you to turn around, so you take him by surprise as you run past him into the dining room once more.

"Doll!" He calls after you, running to your side. He pulls you into his chest when sobs shake your whole body, the words written in blood printed in your mind permanently.

He won't be able to stop me Y/N. I'm coming for you, my pet.

Ok, so I just read your Q'tskraal post and I know it was was literally posted yesterday, but I have a question. What if a child was disabled enough that they literally could not complete Q'tskraal? Also, how would the Galra in general react to a disabled child? What about a child that was seriously injured by an adult? And finally, do the Galra have an equivalent of neurodivergence, such as autism or adhd?

So because I'm not sure whether you meant to ask this in terms of physical or mental disability, I'm going to address both while still attempting to keep this answer as short as possible (which, because it's me, is still not especially short rip).

What with the Empire's emphasis on strength as a core cultural value, they've naturally invested a great deal of time and energy into prosthetics, something we see plenty of evidence of in canon—bionic arms for Shiro / Sendak / the Beta Traz Warden, a bionic leg for Ezor (s07), bionic eyes for Sendak (again) / Branko / Ranveig / Janka, and what is seemingly some sort of respiratory apparatus for the Archivist—and considering that this technology is so apparently commonplace in Imperial circles, I imagine that any and all of the Empire's physically disabled children would be offered whatever aids they required long before their Q'tskraal. As I said in my post on albinism/melanism, "Imperial medical science is excellent, and their prosthetics are often superior to the biological counterpart," meaning that there's little reason any child with a disability of this nature would be unable to participate. As for less obviously visible but still physical disabilities, such as chronic pain, I would be inclined to say that the galra, with all their millennia of scientific advancement and quintessence experimentation, have likely found a way to mitigate these conditions if not cure them entirely.

Mental disabilities, however, are quite often more complex and nuanced than their physical counterparts.

In imperial circles, mental health is almost entirely destigmatised; as with everything, there are always exceptions to the rule, but broadly speaking the galra don’t think of poor mental health as any more a show of weakness than, say, a broken limb… it’s simply a medical issue that needs professional treatment and support so that the affected individual may be as happy and healthy as they are able. [...] For things such as PTSD / anxiety / depression / OCD / bipolar / schizophrenia, psychiatric service animals (such as Laika!) are quite common throughout the Empire, and the support and companionship that they provide to their assigned individuals is considered invaluable.

So disabilities of this nature would be taken into account by the organisers of any given Q'tskraal during the planning stage. Said organisers do, of course, ensure they are intimately familiar with which members of the community will be eligible to participate when the time comes, as this ceremony is such an important one, and all pains are taken to ensure that any and all necessary accommodations can be made for all those that might require them (such as designing a Q'tskraal that avoids any individual participant's notable triggers).

Neurodivergence as a whole would, I think, exist in most (if not all) sentient beings across the universe, because brain chemistry is so varied and complex that I fail to see how it could not? To use your examples, the galra likely wouldn't know autsim or adhd by the same names that human do, but I've no doubt they'd have an equivalent! Just as with physical disabilities, every effort would be made to best accommodate any neurodivergent participant's needs as illustrated in the previous paragraph, so that they too may participate on equal footing with the rest of their peers. That being said, these things do exist on a spectrum, and this brings us to the most severe of intellectual disabilities / developmental delays, which I am,,, wary of addressing incorrectly, because I know that infantilisaion is a huge issue faced by the disabled community, so I //obviously// do not wish to add to that in any way. That being said, the purpose of a Q'tskraal is to serve as a marked transition "from the role of protected to protector" which, if an individual's condition were exceedingly severe (ie. the person in question will never mentally progress beyond a certain age, or be able to function independently in any way) is not a role they would be called upon to fulfill. Such a person would instead become known as ghijmiitah—translated from zaalkh to mean "frozen youth" and thought by those who believe in reincarnation to be souls newly born of Sa—remaining a very much loved and cared for dependent throughout their entire lives, and being attended to by the local community as a whole.

As for how imperial citizens would react to a disabled child, I've addressed almost this exact query before—

By virtue of being galra, any given individual would be considered a beloved child of Sa, and there is an inherent and entirely unmatched value in that; the true glory of the Empire is, after all, only as brilliant as the kindness and dignity with which its most vulnerable members are treated.

—and so whether the disability in question is mental or physical, it wouldn't matter! Children are immeasurably precious to the galra, so any half-decent member of the Empire would be nothing less than unfailingly gracious and compassionate, as to do otherwise would be widely viewed as a disgusting breach of etiquette and quite the indictment on the individual's character. To answer your final question, any adult who (deliberately) harmed a child would not only be tried to the fullest extent of the law, but as such a thing goes against the very core values of Imperial culture, they'd also become a social pariah and likely be disowned by their blood-family for their unthinkable actions.

Exoprimal has an open beta going this weekend, so I got the chance to play a couple matches, and I hate that I am getting the exact same vibes from it that I got from Bionic Commando '09's multiplayer. It's really fun, but there's no way it's not dead on arrival.

Barring anything about the game itself- my biggest gripe with that is that the PvEvP setup of matches is just bizarre- charging $60 for a game that's primarily multiplayer and has a "story" where cutscenes will roll after playing x many online matches feels bad, and then having a battle pass to extrinsically motivate people to keep playing feels bad, especially since I know I'm not going to fill it out because there's too many other goddamn games this year. So if I don't feel it's worth the price of entry, and I'm going to be afflicted with FOMO because I can't make it My Forever Game, why bother buying it in the first place?

C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will.

Aloy/Tilda - This should work because I usually like villain ships (Reylo says heylo). I think my problem is with Tilda. I don't like her motivation to take Aloy away, and don't see much story potential in running off to live alone with her former lovers clone. If you're going to like a villain you need to at least see the appeal of their wants.

A - Ships that you currently like a lot. (They don’t have to be OTPs because not everyone has OTPs.) Friendships, pairings, threesomes, etc. are allowed.

Aloy/Alva - This is fast becoming my headcanon ship for Aloy. I love science pairings (shout out to Pacific Rim) and just found them to have really good chemistry in the game, and lots of narrative potentials. Yes, I know about Alva and Federa. No I don't care. Until we meet Federa in the game she's too nebulous to build anything around (though I do like that she and Alva are rivals to lovers, big fan of that).

Aloy/Talanah - A classic ship that I would be happy to see canonized.

Beta/Milu - I once said that Beta/Milu is what happens when Talanah visits Aloy and they don't leave their room for 3 days. I think they'd be a cute pairing of inexperienced blorbos.

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending? 

Quite a few here.

Aloy and Beta are the same age - The game never gives us a firm answer, but in my view they are twins in all respects. Same age, same maturity level. I don't like stories that write her as younger (14-17).

Petra Forgewoman is gay - Not canonized in the game, but canon to me.

Apex Machines have purple eyes - A minor one, but I like it. It shows their direct control by Hephaestus (as opposed to regular machines that went aggressive) and helps distinguish them more form their regular counterparts.

Now for a few Warhammer 40k ones

Space Marines stand separate from humanity - Space Marines should always be emphasized in their otherness. In this way they are like Stormcast from Age of Sigmar, elevated above humanity to fight the wars and monsters that humanity cannot. What does that do to their perception of themselves and those they defend? Do they resent them? Pity them? Look down on them? Lots of narrative threads.

Skitarii are human first - Skitarii (the foot soldiers of the Adeptus Mechanicus) are not mindless robots to be controlled. They are human first and foremost. They have relationships with each other, love, laugh and joke, they smoke and play cards in their downtime. Their bionics make them more than human with things like direct communications with their commanders and networked information, but they still have personalities and wants.

Here are more of my notes and personal thoughts on the Commando App because I find it very intriguing and I am insane

(Note: In 2x09 and 3x18 there's a slight font error and the period between "2.1" in the "APP v2.1 BETA" in the corner missing. It doesn't appear until 4x10 when the numbers are spaced out and slightly resized)

So, we see throughout the show in the bottom right corner on the Commando App's engagement screen that Chase's Commando App is the 2.1 Beta version. Kate on the other hand has the 3.1 Beta version of it

Something worth noting is that Chase is the original owner of the Commando App, and up until Kate was introduced, he was the only one to have it and after 4x10 he is back to being the only one to have it

So, why does Chase have the 2.1 Beta version and not the 2.0 Beta version? Even more so, why isn't he even the Beta 0.1-1.9 version of the Commando App if he's the first person to have it installed on his chip?

And on top of that, if what we see of the Commando App in the show is the Beta version, then what was the Alpha version and when did it exist?

The Alpha version had to have come before the Beta version, that's the whole point of the Beta version existing since it's the second phase of an app after Alpha

Hypothetically, the Alpha version was what was originally on Chase's chip before it was implanted into him, or right after it was implanted into him

What I mean by that is when Douglas made their chips he obviously had the Commando App in mind to give to Chase because of his main bionic ability not being an offensive or defensive power and with Chase being physically smaller, but since this was new and experimental technology he had to make the Alpha version first to put onto the chip

I could imagine four potential (and completely hypothetical) things out of this idea:

The Alpha version only existed before the chip was inserted into Chase. Douglas created the app and programmed it into the chip and then did some tests and fixed some bugs on the app before turning it over into the Beta phase and then inserting the chip into Chase

The Alpha version existed on the chip as it was inserted into Chase, and then since the chip was essentially "live" and activated inside of Chase Douglas then observed possible faults and glitches in the program where he fixed it and then progressed it into the Beta phase, left at the 2.1 version, where he probably would have continued to update it further before Chase was taken by Donald

Once Donald took the bionic sibs, he had been updating the Commando App as he was still navigating their bionics and their apps. I don't see this as very likely though considering if he says the Commando App is glitchy then he would have done something to the app to try to get rid of the bugs in the programming

The Alpha version was supposed to go on Adam or Bree's chip, or even all three siblings, but Douglas ultimately decided to give it to Chase considering his size and main bionic ability. This is where the Alpha version turned into the Beta version as it was given to Chase

Circling back to Chase's Commando App being the 2.1 Beta version, the number could also simply mean that Douglas just started off numbering the Beta version at 2.1 since Chase is the original. Why not at least 2.0? Who knows! He also could have just skipped over the Alpha version and started off naming it right at the Beta 2.1 version

We see that Kate's Commando App is 3.1, not 2.2 or even 3.0. Considering the Beta numbering of Kate's Commando App compared to Chase's leads me to believe that there was a 1.1 Beta version at some point or even that the 1.1 could have been the Alpha version

Whether or not the Beta version 1.1 existed is just something to think about, and if it did then I think it's safe to assume that is was on Chase's chip at some point before potentially being upgraded to the 2.1 version

I think if we got to see Bree's Commando App activation screen in 4x10 then it could have potentially given us more information on the numbering system for the app. Bree's Commando App was temporary though, so I wonder if her Beta version would have been 3.2 or if it would have been 4.1 or even just 3.1 like Kate's

Ultimately just comparing the numbering of Chase's and Kate's apps means that the Commando App doesn't seemingly take "baby steps" in being upgraded, like having a Beta 2.1.1 version and whatnot. Maybe even the numbering is based off of the activation trigger for each Commando App. Spike activates when Chase is nervous, scared, or angry (a reminder that he's a form of Chase's fight-or-flight instinct but without the flight) and Spikette activates when Kate sees someone (or even just Chase for some reason?) getting hurt and becomes a rampaging momma bear

We could also throw away most of these ideas for Kate's Commando App and the relation to Chase's considering Krane gave her the app so he could have numbered it 3.1 instead of 2.2 but this is getting ridiculously hypothetical so I'm going to just dive away from this thought

Basically what I'm trying to get at is that Kate's 3.1 version most likely isn't an upgraded version of the Commando App, it's just numbered 3.1 because it's just another version of the app installed into a different person

Lastly, it's a great detail that the Commando App is programmed as a Beta app considering the nature of the app itself. Not only that, but it is quite literally new and experimental technology as it's an app on a chip inserted into bionic human beings!

It's referred to as a glitchy app and it even appears glitchy, which is what a Beta version is of an app/program. The Beta version is meant as like a semi-testing version of the app, a step up from the Alpha version, and has more work to be done before the app/program gets more finalized. It's going to have bugs, it's going to be glitchy, it's going to have plenty of issues but it's also operational and better than the Alpha version. So having the Commando App listed as "Beta" is a perfect and neat detail!

I actually don't think that there's anything wrong with the Commando App at all, or at least not Spike. I think contrary to what the characters say about it, it's not glitchy, at least not Spike. Sure there's maybe just one or two parts I could see as a "glitch" but I also could see it as normal operation. The bionic disruptor enhancing his bionic aggression instead of deactivating the Commando App is super interesting

It certainly doesn't help that Spike's behavior and personality is inconsistent so it's hard to judge this, or the fact that he only appears four times in the entirety of the show. On the other hand I think Spikette is different though and that she might have a few glitches, especially if we consider Krane gave it to her so it might be unstable but honestly who knows. This "glitch" talk is something for me to discuss at another time though.....

This is what we see out of the Commando App. The owner of the program cannot control the engagement or disengagement of the app, nor can they control themselves when the app is engaged. It's also described as a dangerous app due to this, especially since the owner loses control and their rampaging alter ego takes over.

And maybe this was how the Commando App was always meant to be, a defense mechanism that shuts out its owner in order to protect them, or at least that's Spike's purpose and not Spikette's. This would make sense since it's essentially their fight-or-flight system and meant to protect the owner of the app, they're not meant to be the ones in control of their own fight-or-flight system. They're supposed to take their enemy off guard by seemingly fighting a weaker appearing opponent that suddenly turns into a highly aggressive brute that will tear them apart

Or like Chase was wanting to find out in 4x10, maybe the Commando App could become controllable. Could this have been a potential future software update further into the Beta version or even into a more finalized version of the app? Was it obtainable at the versions Chase and Kate had? Was the Commando App meant to be controllable in the first place? Who knows!

So really all of this is just hypothetical. Was there an Alpha version of the Commando App? I think we can assume so, and further more it either existed before it was inserted into Chase or right when it was inserted into Chase before being upgraded. Maybe there wasn't an Alpha version and it started off as the 2.1 Beta version in Chase, but I still believe there was a 1.1 version somewhere, whether it was an Alpha or Beta. Maybe the Commando App was never meant to be finalized and was always meant to stay as a Beta version

No matter what, it's a great concept that I wish was utilized more in the show. I also wish we were given more general information about it. It had more potential, especially Spike (*cough cough* S4 Spike was disappointing though *cough cough*) to be developed further. I wish we heard more about Chase's thoughts on having the Commando App and practically being deemed weak at birth to have this monstrous alter ego inserted into him that he didn't ask for

Ultimately, I just think it's neat!
