Treatment for Uro-Oncology in India
Tumblr media
Uro-oncology, also known as urologic oncology, is a medical discipline that deals with cancers and / or tumours of the urinary organs. Uro-oncologists treat a variety of malignancies that mostly include:
Bladder Cancer
Testicular Cancer
Adrenal Cancer
Kidney Cancer
Penile Cancer
Prostate Cancer
Pelvis Cancer
While different types of cancers come with their own unique treatment / cure strategies, here we will be discussing the kinds of surgeries and treatments involved in Prostate Cancer, Kidney Cancer, and Bladder Cancer. A uro-oncologist has to work in close concord with the healthcare team to ensure that the treatments are customized to one’s condition, and help bring down the risks of side effects. Uro-oncology treatment in India, in most cases, requires surgery unless the cancer has metastasized, in which case, chemo/ radiation therapy will be recommended. Advancements in technology and increasing medical knowledge drastically reduce the chances of post-operative pain. Radiation trauma, while heightening the chances of a successful treatment, in certain cases, may cause delayed diagnosis, making it difficult to always achieve the desired results.
What Are the Various Options Available for Kidney Cancer Treatment?
The following methods can be considered for kidney cancer treatment -
Radical nephrectomy: This procedure enables the removal of the entire kidney that’s affected. The adrenal gland may also have to be removed if the tumour has affected it or is very close to it.
Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy (LRN): This surgery involves multiple small incisions instead of one large incision. One of the incisions will be larger than the others to facilitate the transfer of the affected kidneys. LRN requires lesser recovery time and also leads to reduced bleeding and pain.
Partial nephrectomy: This approach selectively eliminates the part of the kidney that is affected by the cancer. This procedure is beneficial, especially for those with one kidney, or with abnormal kidney function so as to ensure that some part of the kidney is still functional.
What Are the Various Options for Prostate Cancer Treatment?
Below are the options for prostate cancer treatment -
Prostatectomy: This procedure involves the complete removal of the prostate. The most used surgical method for this is the Da Vinci Surgical system which is a robotic system designed for smaller invasions and extremely precise cuts.
Biopsy: This is normally used to diagnose prostate cancer. While in certain cases, a biopsy might require an endoscopy, it, most of the time, will rely heavily on image guidance.
What Are the Various Options for Bladder Cancer Treatment?
The following treatment methods could be deployed to treat bladder cancer -
Transurethral resection: This procedure is most commonly used for early stage cancers and / or those with superficial bladder wall layer.
Cystectomy: This is a surgical procedure and is mostly used to remove the entire bladder or selective portions of it. Laparoscopy is one of the methods employed.
Cystectomies are performed in two ways: a) Partial Cystectomy b) Radical Cystectomy
Reconstructive surgery: Reconstructive surgery  is performed when the bladder cancer is at an advanced stage and cannot be removed with surgery.
As with most types of cancer, even kidney cancers, if detected at an early stage, can be curable with the right treatment / surgery / therapy.
