How to build paragraphs in IELTS
Introduction
In the IELTS writing test Task - 2, you're expected to write down an essay in about 250 words, in response to a particular point of view, a problem, or an argument. The duration to complete the writing task is 40 minutes.
First, allow us to understand what an essay is for the aim of the IELTS writing test Task - 2. Just read the blog on this topic by Best IELTS Institute in Chandigarh, EDUCOVE. An essay could be a piece of nonfiction writing that's designed to present a thought, develop an argument, express some extent of view, and so on. As you're aware, most pieces of writing require quite one paragraph. Needless to mention, the division into paragraphs aids readability and prevents monotony because it provides a physical break on the page. it's important to recollect if you are not having appropriate paragraphing within the essay, you're penalized.
A paragraph is unified by a central, controlling idea or theme. This concept or theme is termed the subject of the paragraph and may be expressed at someplace within the paragraph by one (or two sentences), by the subject sentence. you'll be able to write the subject sentence as a press release, a problem, or maybe a matter. If one could be a proficient writer, there might not be an overt sentence in any respect, it's going to be implied within the paragraph. However, most topic sentences are found at the start of a paragraph.
Discuss both views and provide your opinion.
Sample 1– Many parents in full-time employment like better to leave their children with grandparents once they are at work because they feel their child is going to be safer with someone from within the second balcony. In other words, they do not trust a stranger to look after their child and feel confident that no harm will come to the kid whilst being taken care of by grandma or grandpa. As an example, a 2013 study from Cambridge University showed that 62% of working mothers prefer a member of the immediate family to supply care once they are at work.
Sample 2– Grandparents are the most effective people to seem after children for very obvious reasons. Grandparents really love their grandchildren and would never harm them. Also, the kids really love their grandparents and feel comfortable with them. Finally, grandparents have plenty of experience taking care of kids because they're old and sorted children for several years themselves.
Can you tell which one is better?
Sample 1 has one main argument- parents prefer grandparents because they trust them. they need stated this very clearly within the first sentence then explained why this is often, within the second sentence. This is often exactly what the examiner wants.
Sample 2 has many various arguments and most of them are very general. they need not be extended with explanations and lack examples. This is often exactly what the examiner doesn't want.
How to Write a subject SentenceThe very first sentence in your supporting paragraph should be the subject sentence. Each paragraph should have one main idea only and therefore the sentence tells the reader what this concept is. This makes your paragraph and therefore the whole essay clearer and easier to read. you'll gain marks for coherence within the IELTS writing test if you are doing this. consider them as signposts that direct the reader to where you would like to travel.
We think of topic sentences in an argument essay by thinking of ideas why we support one side or the opposite.
Let’s take a look at another question:
Most high-level positions in companies are filled by men while the workforce in many developed countries is over 50% feminine. Companies should be required to allocate a specific percentage of those positions to women. Does one agree?
So we've got to consider reasons for and against allocating a specific percentage of positions within the workforce to women.
For:
Fairness
Equality
Prevent discrimination
Women outperform men in many roles
Women outperform men in many faculties and university subjects
Against:
Should be supported merit, not gender
A few jobs, like construction, are better suited to males
I support the ‘for’ category so I'm visiting to pick two of these reasons and write topic sentences for them. you ought to always pick the ideas you recognize most about, or in other words, can explain and support with examples.
Topic Sentence 1: Women should be allocated a specific percentage of roles because to not do so, discriminates against them due to their gender.
Topic Sentence 2: Females should tend an even bigger share of jobs because women currently outperform males in most university subjects.
As you'll see, all I've got to do is just introduce my ideas in a very, very clear way. There's no need to use very advanced language to try and do this, stating your position in simple language is all you would like to try and do.
Task: Try taking a number of the opposite ideas above and writing a subject sentence.
Explaining Our Ideas
Explaining ideas may be a problem for many students, not because they can’t have it away, but because they don’t see the purpose in doing it. They think that the examiner must be an informed person and explaining simple ideas to them is wasting their time.
You should never assume this and instead, I tell my students to assume that the reader has no knowledge of this subject in the slightest degree and you wish to elucidate what you mean so as for them to grasp.
There are certain phrases we are able to use to clarify our ideas such as:
That is to say…. (linking)
In other words… (linking)
This is because… (giving reasons)
The reason is…. (giving reasons)
As a result…. (describing result)
As a consequence…. (describing result)
Therefore…. (describing result)
Use one in every of these phrases to elucidate what your sentence means, the rationale why, or the results of your sentence. You don’t have to do all three, just one. confirm that anyone with no knowledge of the topic can understand what your main point is.

Since there are four components of the IELTS (International English language Testing System) exam—Listening, Writing, Reading, and Speaking—the IELTS band score is calculated by doing away with a median of the individual scores awarded in these four sections. This score is then rounded off to the closest half or whole band with equal weightage for the section scores. As an example, Aspirant X gets 6.5, 6.5, 5.0 and 7.0 within the four sections, then his/her average of those four scores are 6.25 and also the band scores are rounded off to the closest half i.e., 6.5.
In the same manner, suppose another Aspirant Y gets 4.0, 3.5, 4.0, and 4.0 for these sections, his/her average score is going to be 3.875, and also the band score is going to be 4.0. Someone getting 6.5, 6.5, 5.5, and 6.0 in these portions will have a median score of 6.125 and a band score of 6.0. If the typical is ending at the .25 mark, then the general score is rounded off to the closest half band, which can be .50. And if it ends at .75, then it'll be rounded to the subsequent whole band.
What are the Speaking band descriptors ?
The Speaking band descriptors are a collection of assessment criteria that the examiner uses to assess your speaking performance. The band descriptors are identical for both IELTS Speaking tests (Academic and General Training). The assessment criteria are broken into four categories across 9 bands:
Fluency and coherence
Lexical resource
Grammatical range and accuracy
