Let's talk about home networking, and the absolute frustration I am currently experiencing with the disparity between consumer networking equipment, and the speed of storage in most modern computers.
I'm an outlier, and I understand that. But let's highlight my current situation, and why I'm baffled at how we've remained at a now piddly gigabit speed for in-home wired networking for such a long time.
Almost 15 years ago, in May of 2009, we got SATA in its current form. This is that weird little connector on every motherboard that has a long L running down it.

This allowed for the transfer of data between storage devices in your computer (at the time, hard drives) and the rest of the system. SATA-III, the current specification, allows for speeds of up to 6.0Gbit/s, or ~600MB/s. At the time of its release, hard drives on the market could read/write at ~100MB/s. I'm generalising, but this is largely true for consumer hard disks of 2009/2010. Now, that's definitely not 600MB/s, you might think. And you'd be right! I won't go too deep into the reason for why SATA-III seems overkill here to avoid derailing the original topic.
Also by this point, gigabit Ethernet was ubiquitous. If you had a home computer, and were part of the wave of people starting to take the internet seriously in the mid-late 2000s, it's not unlikely you were wired up. The family computer was still a strong component of most homes, and wi-fi was slow and unreliable. Most ISP provided cable modems at this time would have also included at least one gigabit port to connect a router or network switch to. And to that end, NETGEAR has been selling the same little GS105 gigabit network switch for more than 20 years now.
So, if you had network attached storage in this era, then it was almost certainly working to the best of its ability. You were pretty much going to get that max throughput from your network and the connected drives without being concerned about a bottleneck on either end.
But then we move to the early 2010s. SSDs have entered the market and they're coming down in price quickly. Originally designed to use the SATA interface, these suckers could write quick, and a single one of them could easily max out SATA's 6Gbps, writing or reading at around 550MB/s. We've officially crossed the threshold now, and if you wanted a couple of these in a network attached storage device, you would be sacrificing some speed. A few more years, and not only have SSDs gotten cheaper, but clever engineers over at Intel and a consortium of other companies had introduced a newer, better standard than SATA: NVMe.

With this, we were looking at speeds in the GB/s range, not MB/s. By 2020, these had become standard in almost every desktop and laptop you could buy.
So now, three years after that, and many after this disparity between gigabit networking and storage transfer speeds showed up, why does home networking still insist on remaining terrible?
Well, as it turns out, I'm just a weirdo. About the same time that our storage speeds got better, people started needing less of it, and the way people used computers has changed drastically. These days, people don't really user ethernet the way they used to. Wi-fi has gotten better, data plans have gotten better. Most of the devices we use on a regular basis now don't have a means to plug them in. Everyone streams content, stores documents and photos in the cloud, or browses light content on their phone.
Routers/modems of today prioritize wireless speeds over wired ones. Wi-fi 6e and the upcoming Wi-fi 7 standard boast multi-gigabit speeds in ideal environments. Gigabit ethernet adapters are cheap to manufacture, and there's little demand for anything better. For that, you end up in a the "prosumer" market where you deal with equipment that isn't much more than a rebadged, feature locked enterprise product for niche enthusiasts like myself.
I just want a cheap, unmanaged 2.5+ gbit network switch from a reputable brand. Is that too much to ask?

Future 6G networks will find applications in areas like smart factories, intelligent mines, low-latency and high-bandwidth services for metaverses and virtual reality, high-bandwidth access for high-speed transportation such as trains and airplanes, high-density and large-scale device connectivity for the IoT, and ubiquitous interconnection for aviation, aerospace, maritime, and land domains.

Both Wi-Fi 7 and 5G support larger bandwidth, more connected devices, and lower latency. They enhance performance through MIMO technology and wider spectrum bandwidth. Therefore, there is indeed some competition between them. Firstly, Wi-Fi devices divert mobile data traffic away from 5G networks by connecting to fixed networks through wireless routers. Secondly, there is a conflict in spectrum resources. Similar to Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7 utilizes the unlicensed 6GHz (5.925GHz-7.125GHz) frequency band, enabling it to achieve a continuous bandwidth of 320 MHz. The problem is that not only the WiFi Alliance wants to use 6 GHz to enhance the performance of next-generation WiFi technology, MNOs are also eyeing this piece of "pie". (Europe, America, and some Asian countries have already opened up some or all of this frequency band for Wi-Fi 6E usage. China has allocated the 6GHz to 5G/6G. )
Wi-Fi 7 and 5G/6G are promising wireless technologies for the future, each with its advantages and disadvantages depending on the application scenario. In simple terms, if you require long-range coverage, high speeds, and seamless mobility, 5G/6G is the best choice. If you need high download speeds and lower power consumption within small spaces like offices or homes, Wi-Fi 7 may be more suitable. So some people think Wi-Fi will never replace 5G. Instead, these technologies will coexist and complement each other based on different scenarios.
While others think that in certain industry applications, due to the high speed and low latency of Wi-Fi 7, coupled with its low cost, it may partially replace some private 5G networks. What's your opinion?

Mesh Wi-Fi (also known as Whole Home Wi-Fi) systems are home networking solutions that opt for a more decentralized approach to the problem of local connectivity. Rather than force every device in your home to wirelessly connect to the internet through the same router, Mesh Wi-Fi systems rely on multiple Wi-Fi nodes. They start from a place of accepting that your regular router probably isn’t located in the perfect spot to serve every connected device in your house and work forward from there. Ideally, your Wi-Fi should be up and running within 15 minutes after unboxing. How many mesh Wi-Fi systems are out there? These days, there are plenty of options in the mesh networking space to choose from. Most traditional networking brands like Netgear, Linksys, TP-Link and D-Link incorporate mesh Wi-Fi systems into their wider product portfolio in one way or another. In 2023 we’re seeing new releases from these brands featuring upgrades, the biggest of which is Wi-Fi 6E functionality. Wi-Fi 6E not only delivers faster Internet, but it also allows more Wi-Fi devices to connect to your router without affecting your Wi-Fi connectivity. However, Wi-Fi 6E capable mesh systems are quite expensive compared to Wi-Fi 6 mesh systems. Mesh Wi-Fi smart devices Brands like Amazon and Google are also making in-roads into the mesh Wi-Fi space. These companies are less interested in power users and more interested in customers who want their mesh home networking experience to integrate into a wider smart ecosystem. A while back, we were introduced to Google Nest, a mesh Wi-Fi device that provides Wi-Fi to your whole house but also incorporates a smart speaker that allows you to play music, manage your Wi-Fi network, and control other connected devices simply by using your voice. Similar devices are growing in popularity, with other companies producing products that link into the smart ecosystems these companies have created. A number of products on market like TP-Link’s Deco M9 already include some kind of connectivity technology that allows them to communicate with smart home products. Late last year TP-Link also released a new product the Deco X50, which is a mesh Wi-Fi product with Amazon Alexa functionality built-in. Deco X50 allows users to do things like turn the lights on and off and play music with simple voice commands. However, they may not be ideal for gaming. For example, in our review of the Nest Wi-Fi, we said that “Google’s latest foray into home networking is likely a natural fit that’ll make smart and easy Wi-Fi seem effortless. Whether it performs at a high enough level to sate the needs of gamers is another question entirely.” “Regardless of whether you’ve got a Google Home or not, the Nest Wi-Fi system excels at delivering a clean and painless mesh networking experience.”
Mesh Wi-Fi Vs Wi-Fi Routers: Which is better? If you’re living in a home with multiple occupants, there are clear advantages to going with Mesh Wi-Fi systems like the Amazon Eero, Netgear Orbi and TP-Link Deco XE75. They’re simple to set up, convenient to use and easy to expand. Multi-scenario PoE Mesh Wi-Fi systems like the TP-Link Deco X50 can also cover up to 6,500 square feet, so they’re perfect for large homes with up to six rooms. However, if you’re living on your own or care a lot about gaming or 4K content streaming and want the fastest speeds possible, there are still good reasons to consider a traditional network router instead. These routers tend to offer higher speeds and offer more heavy-duty specs than mesh systems do. If you’re the kind of power user in need of that extra grunt, it’s easy to make the case for them being the better option. Other Wi-Fi options While we’ve mainly been discussing the differences between mesh Wi-Fi and traditional router Wi-Fi, there is now another option that blurs the lines between these two categories. A number of suppliers have technologies that allow you to convert multiple routers into a mesh-like Wi-Fi system. Asus’ conversion technology is called AiMesh, while most of TP-Link’s new routers include software called OneMesh that allows users to create a mesh-like system with the help of a range extender and a firmware update. “There’s a little bit more configuration involved than a true mesh system, but it can be a good option if you’ve gone and bought routers and want the benefit of mesh without losing any of the performance benefits,” says Sean Fletcher, marketing manager for TP-Link Australia. However, if you decide on going down this route, there’s a caveat: “With OneMesh Wi-Fi performance tends to be better if you have your router in the center of the house and extenders at the ends, whereas with a traditional mesh you can put one router at one end of the house and then daisy chain the others throughout the home and it’ll always talk to that closest connection.
