Bridges Crockett can’t burn

Singer’s been everywhere but blends Texas country and blues in ‘Visions of Dallas’

Name a city — any city — and Charley Crockett has probably been there.

Born near the southern tip of Texas, the singer spent his early childhood in a trailer park with his single mom near Brownsville.

In his late teens and 20s, he “hoboed” around the world, playing in subways and on street corners and crashing wherever he could in Spain, New Orleans, Copenhagen, New York City, Paris and Morocco.

He lived in Northern California, where he worked on a marijuana farm and got busted for selling the harvest.

Since 2017, he’s settled in Austin, although his roots there are still loose, since he’s on the road half the time.

But of all the places he’s been, perhaps the key spot in the picaresque story of Charley Crockett is Dallas, which is why he named his latest album after Big D.

The singer, 40, released Visions of Dallas on Monday, a companion album to his 3-month-old $10 Cowboy and featuring songs from the same recording sessions.

Visions of Dallas is classic Crockett, an uncompromising blend of Texas country and blues marked by the singer’s unique phrasing and smooth-as-scotch baritone.

“I’d be lying to you if I said it hadn’t been suggested to me before,” he says with a laugh, when asked about the Dallas title.

He’s speaking by phone before a show in Cleveland, where he’s about to do a VIP meet-and-greet — a long way from his days playing for spare change on the grimy streets of Deep Ellum.

He admits putting Dallas in the title was a repeated suggestion of his fiancée, Taylor Grace, a Houston-born singer-songwriter whom Crockett calls “the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Grace co-wrote the title track to Visions of Dallas .

“She really loves the city,” Crockett says. “She was staying at the Fairmont Hotel downtown, looking for wedding dresses with her mama and looking out on the Dallas skyline from her hotel room, and she just wrote a song off the top of her head, thinking about my life. [The rest of the song] just jumped out of my guitar when I heard it, and we came up with a melody together.”

Visions of Dallas is an eclectic album, with six original songs mixed with covers by the late Fort Worth native Townes Van Zandt (“Loretta”), Bob Dylan (a retooled version of his 1973 outtake “Goodbye Holly”) and Hoyt Axton’s “Trouble and Misery,” a tune about escaping hard times in Laredo and moving to Dallas.

“I think all the songs on the record are tying back to Dallas,” Crockett says. “Dallas-Fort Worth is real important to me.”

And for good reason. Crockett lived in North Texas longer than in any other area.

Arriving in Irving with his mother when he was 9, he went to Irving public schools until he dropped out and hit the road with the pawnshop guitar his mom had bought for him.

After brushes with the law and an ill-fated contract with a New York music biz exec, he returned to Dallas in the early 2010s and re-launched his career out of Deep Ellum with a pair of self-released albums that earned rave reviews from Rolling Stone and NPR.

Seven years and an armload of albums later, he’s a star, though one who still flies under the radar of mainstream popularity.

His 2022 masterwork The Man From Waco finally earned him a spot on the Billboard 200 — but just barely, scratching the surface at 199. $10 Cowboy upped the ante by a few nickels, making it to 168.

Yet Crockett has emerged as a big deal among lovers of American roots music.

This summer, he’s headlining major venues such as the 9,000-seat Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside Denver and the Ryman Auditorium, the “mother church of country music,” in Nashville.

His last Dallas show, at the Longhorn Ballroom in May, sold out well in advance.

He sings about his former home in “Avoiding Mirrors,” a song from Visions of Dallas about being haunted by lost love and sinking deep into depression.

In the lyrics, Crockett tips his Stetson to Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s “Dallas,” Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth, the Trinity River, and Pegasus, the iconic flying red horse that’s been sitting atop the Magnolia Building since 1934.

The song is a follow-up of sorts to “Trinity River,” his 2015 tale of heartbreak where he dreams of his corpse floating downstream.

Still, he admits that singing the blues on Visions of Dallas is his way of coming to grips with various memories — painful and otherwise — of his days spent in North Texas, just as past songs were about his poverty-filled childhood in South Texas.

“I don’t care who you are. You could travel this whole world over and you will never outrun it,” he says. “You’ll never get away from it. You just keep ending up there.”

About six years ago, I meandered around the tiny Colorado Christian University Campus, waiting for my older sister to get out of class. It was early on in her first semester at school so she couldn’t exactly ditch class to host me. As I walked around, I remember seeing crosses everywhere. As a non-Christian consistently surrounded by Christians, I was worn out by the thought of ever attending CCU, even with the hefty sibling scholarship. Geese fluttering about the sidewalks, I stood along the path, looking at the rather dismal, though flowing pond in the middle of campus and told myself (and God) that I would never go here.

So I graduate from Colorado Christian University this Saturday…

I am not sure how many times in my life I need to relearn this lesson- that the more I tell God my plans, the more He laughs at my pretend amounts of control. Every time I don’t understand what’s happening in my life, or I want things to be different so I go through the motions of making it so, God has a plot twist for me and I end up exactly where I started- lost.

I prefer to be in the driver seat of my life (although I much prefer my husband to take the driver's seat in the car). My way seems to make sense a lot of the time, especially to myself. But that is never the way things end up happening.

Four years ago, I was anything but the driver of my life. Raising money for this crazy gap year I still didn’t understand, seemed completely out of my control. The first three months of gap year, as most of my readers know by now, I lived in a co-ed house in downtown Denver on Colfax and Downing. My internships were incredible, my new friends, Haley and Kaitlyn, were incredible, the anticipation of going overseas was incredible. For the first time in my life, I was out of my own way. I had done the work I needed to do to get where I was, so all I had to do then was live. I did not know how fun life could be before living in Denver, with all its quirks and things to do. I was not in charge of anything except for the group dinner on Wednesday nights. My primary responsibility was going to my internship three days a week and attending classes the other two days. I soaked all of it up. I loved it, yet I had no control over it.

When I became a Christian after the Kilimanjaro incident, I decided Denver truly was where I wanted to be. I wanted to feel as alive as I did when we were there for those three months. After doing some research, I hesitantly realized that CCU really was the best decision. They took so many of my credits from high school, allowing me to double major, and then, instead of double majoring later down the line, to graduate early. I did not really think about it much. I knew CCU was where I was going to go, even if I could hardly explain why at the time.

Freshman year, I moved into my dorm early and accidentally woke my brand new roommate from sleep, something I learned to never do again. Cydne had no idea I was coming and all the sudden there I was, an intruder on the lucky space she thought she had to herself. Cydne and I were fast friends despite the weird beginning, and while our friendship was not planned, it ended up being an amazing thing. As a bridesmaid in my wedding last year, I hope she remains in my life for a good long time!

Meeting JC that first semester, second day of school was also more than ideal. As our friendship developed and turned into the marriage that it is now, I did not really have to think about it. I just knew he was who I wanted to marry and who I hoped to spend the rest of my life with. While I may have given him some not-so-subtle hints at the beginning, no one can truly control a relationship and expect it to be successful. Our relationship just worked and was, and is, a beautiful, life-altering thing.

The two and a half years spent at CCU, with one bizarre semester spent studying abroad in Ireland,  went nothing as I had planned. I intended to graduate with both a music and a business degree. I intended to live on campus all “four” years. I intended to have a healthy brain and unwavering spirit. But I got in my own way. I worked four jobs one summer while memorizing Matthew to pay for school. I drove myself crazy doing things I thought I had to do to be impressive. And while life threw all sorts of curve balls, the challenges made this experience all the more worth it and I would not change what I have now for anything!!

I am pleased to say my goal for college never changed. Not that I expected it to but I am pleased to announce JC and I are hoping to own and operate a social enterprise event venue to employ and empower disenfranchised individuals needing a second chance. That has always been the dream and now I have a fellow dreamer by my side! This business degree with an emphasis in hospitality is just one of the steps along the way toward making that dream a reality.

And it all started with something unplanned.

So many things happen in our lives that are unplanned. And God wants it that way. He wants us to need Him, and we don’t need Him if we have everything under control. Of course, there are some of us that He has to smack down more than others! Some of us just can’t take a hint. He has known what He was doing with me and my life from the very beginning and it’s about time that I enjoy the ride. I hesitate to say “sit back and enjoy the ride” because no part of me naturally “sits back.” But God knows why this year went the way it did and what I am supposed to do next, even if I don’t. There have been talks of moving and even plans made, but of course, none of that is turning out the way we expected. So JC and I are learning to love the ride and to wait patiently, or at least try to, on His guidance and will.

But as we near graduation, I am reminded once again that He really has the most beautiful hands with the most beautiful aspirations for our lives. Through the love of people like JC, Cydne, Bekah, Rachel, Haley, Kaitlyn, Isaac, Katja, Justin, Jamie, Bekah, Mom, Dad, Gramy, Gramps, Katie and Jason, Dominick, Johnathan, Joyce, Stuart, Matt and Rose Zuschlag, Professor Miller, Professor Durough, Professor Rex, Professor McTavish, Christian, Jaime, Kylie, Becca, Alexis, Michelle, Professor Clary, Kendall, my dog Piper and Jesus, I have gotten where I am today and I truly don’t think I could have done it without all of you!

hi all! i’m finally back in boston from my recent travels & would be VERY happy to stay put for a while! to have time to clean my house, do laundry & have access to my full wardrobe sounds so good to me, haha!

as mentioned, i wanted to post about denver separately as i had never visited the mile high city before & even though i spent a short time there, i really want to share the experience! we stayed at the hyatt place in the glendale/cherry creek area of denver as it was near our friends’ house & wedding venue. to be honest, i wish we had asked for a room on the top floor so we would have better views of the mountains, but i was happy enough to wake up every morning, throw open the curtains & gaze upon the rockies as they were :) reminded me of where we stayed in sydney & i essentially said hi to the sydney opera house every time i looked out our window, haha!

no time for lazing about though, there was a whole city to explore & only 51 hours to do it :) before MDH & i got to denver, we had already done on our research on the places we wanted to eat! big surprise :) we actually use tripadvisor a lot for stuff like that instead of yelp. we luckily were able to hit up the following places:

1. denver biscuit co.: awesome breakfast place for good ol’ southern fare. according to reviews, there was only one dish to order…the franklin - the perfect sized fried chicken, bacon, cheese & fried egg (it says it’s optional, but we all know, if you’re offered a fried egg, you GET the fried egg!) biscuit sandwich covered with peppery sausage gravy. yummmmmm!

2. voodoo doughnut mile high: those of you in the know, this is a portland, oregon based chain, but the denver location does not disappoint. i got my staples, the portland cream & bacon maple bar (other favorites are *of course* the famed voodoo doughnut), but i also liked the colfax cream, which is just like the portland cream doughnut, only with the maple frosting. soooo good!

3. habit doughnut dispensary: more doughnuts…but with the option of liquor-filled pipette injections! yup, whiskey & doughnuts. two great things i didn’t know go great together :)

4. sushi den: this place was high up on tripadvisor’s best restaurant list, but i have to admit that i wasn’t all that thrilled with the sushi. its claim to fame is having daily fresh fish shipped in. i did enjoy the fact i was eating sushi from places like japan, hawaii & croatia, but i’ve had better sushi right here in the greater boston area. i have to say sushi den did challenge me however. i’m a pretty adventurous sushi eater, but even the firefly squid below made me a little afraid, haha!

the quirkiness of denver for sure had to be the juxtaposition of the feel of a major city, yet the proximity of the wilderness. you would watch a porsche speed up to a red light & stop next to essentially one of those monster trucks covered in mud, ha! also, *of course* the dispensaries everywhere were a constant reminder you weren’t in kansas anymore. i really wanted to go into one, but i’m sure they have plenty of tourists who come in just to gawk & didn’t want to be *that* kind of jerk :)

i have to say though that my most favorite thing about denver was again reminding me of one of my favorite cities in australia, melbourne, with all the street art & even pedestrian bridges. having not an artistic bone in my body (not counting the martial arts, hahaha), i super appreciate & love street murals…especially when they’re big & beautiful. there’s nothing like walking down the street, looking down & seeing a colorful alleyway & feeling compelled to walk down it & explore :) hopefully, the next time i’m in denver, i’ll have more than 51 hours to be able to visit other neighborhoods & eat more doughnuts!

The gorge is a refuge for the rare Cretan goat kri-kri, which lives only in the park and a small island off the shore of Agia Marina.
