The Heart of London: Things to do in Westminster
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8281dcb89e3f9d2fc7a39c35da8d1eef/46810fe779e0fa6d-5b/s540x810/ee7c78d79a06eb67f4d3408c5f80a7a4997cdddb.jpg)
When people say they are going to London, they do not always realise just how many places that could mean. From London Heathrow Hotel in the west to the centrally located hotels near Lancaster Gate, these two places offer very different experiences of the capital. Technically, the City of Westminster is both a city and borough, and is now a core part of Central London - it was only recognised as a part of London in 1965 when the concept of Greater London was developed. Here are four things to do in this historical epicenter.
Park Grand Accommodation
A large portion of Park Grand accommodation can be found within the City of Westminster, including the Park Grand Hotel London, Hyde Park International, Park Grand London Paddington and more. Whether you make the most of the hotel’s dining facilities such as The Craven Lounge at Park Grand London Lancaster Gate, or enjoy these hotels’ proximity to the rest of the amazing tourist attractions on this list, a stay in the Park Grand plays a vital role in the City of Westminster experience.
Buckingham Palace and The Changing of the Guards
You can’t stay in the same borough as Queen Elizabeth II and not stop by, right? This royal palace has been visited since it was built in 1703 and remains a top London attraction for first-time visitors to the city. Part of the appeal of the palace is the tradition and ceremony, which is best captured in the Changing of the Guards ceremony, which takes place in front of the palace. Watch and admire as the Queen’s guards perform a traditional ceremony in their red coats and bearskin hats, featuring triumphant bands and plenty of marching.
Shopping
If you have traveled to London for a bit of retail therapy, then the City of Westminster is the area you want to visit. Here, you will find Oxford Street, Regent’s Street, Carnaby Street, Liberty London, Bond Street, Savile Row… Basically, all the internationally recognized shopping outlets your heart could possibly desire. Selfidges on Oxford Street is an upscale department store which is jam-packed with all the latest designer collections, toys, gifts and more. You can visit designer flagships all around the area, including Prada, Gucci, Cartier and DOLCE & GABBANA on Old Bond Street. Not to be missed is the world-famous Hamleys on Regent’s Street for those with kids!
Royal parks
There are three royal parks which fall inside the City of Westminster: Hyde Park, St James’s Park and Regent’s Park. All three of these will satiate any hunger you have for nature, given that there is about 324 hectares of it between the three of them! Between Hyde Park Rose Garden and The Japanese Garden Island in Regent’s Park, you would struggle to run out of beauty to admire. Be sure to check each park’s schedules online to see whether there are any events lined up. For instance, Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is a yuletide treat, and Taste of London in the Summertime is perfect for food-lovers.

Benefits
Rivals blurb: 2.8k word
Request: y/n & harry go to a bar and someone from harrys office flirts with her and he gets jealous
__
Work parties were never very exciting, so when Y/n and Harry had a combined company benefit party at one of the upscale lounges in London she was hardly excited. Her publicist had decided it would be good to do it together to get more hype and press on it by proving even though their companies split years prior there was ‘no bad blood’. She only agreed because some of the profits were going to different charities and that gave her the stamina to stick out a work event, and well free booze was a plus.
She had just enough time to make a pitstop home to change into a formal appropriate cocktail dress, pumps and fixed her hair before making her way towards the bar. Upon arrival she could already hear Harry’s distinct fake laugh, her eyes rolling automatically knowing he was cheesing up to some rich beneficiary to milk as much cash out of them as he could. She headed straight to the bar, ordering a vodka soda with lime deciding she’d need a little help getting through the night If she’d be trapped with that prick in such an enclosed space.
After two vodka sodas she was feeling a good buzz, good enough that her uptight nature seemed to unravel enough for her to entertain the gentlemen who decided to start talking to her, joining her at the bar. He wasn’t too bad looking, typical business man look with a crisp suit and hair styled with some sort of product that made it stiff. He was well groomed and she had recognized him as one of Harry’s employees. Mark was his name, and as long as he kept her drinks coming, she was more than willing to keep chatting with the man. Seemed like a good trade to her, booze for flirting- a win-win for both parties.
“How old are yeh doll?” the man was giving her the typical flirty eyes, she’d typically cringe at how thick this guy was laying it on already but she was too tipsy to care. “ ‘m 23, you?” the man had a sly smirk on his face at that, rubbing his chin slightly before taking a sip of his whiskey. “I’m 46, props to you fo’ havin’ such a big company at your age. I was just getting’ coffee for asshole bosses when I was your age. A business woman is sexy you know? You like older men hun?” his game was truly weak, almost embarrassingly so for someone of his age. She questioned if he could be a 40-year-old virgin, or he was just a terrible flirt. Yet she answered truthfully, not caring much since she’d likely never see this bloke again. “Depends, been with ‘em before but it’s not a preference or anything.”
His eyes flicked over the expanse of her body, his smirk not dropping at her answer as he licked over his lips. “Oldest you’ve been with?” his question made her roll her eyes starting to get a little tired of him now, knowing full well he just wanted to bang her which wasn’t going to happen. “I don’t kiss and tell Marcus.”
The pair weren’t aware of the irritated glare that was watching their every move, reading their lips from across the room as they talked. Harry was the peeping tom in question, staring the two adults down with a strange feeling in his gut and a tingle in his palms- like he wanted to punch his employee but- why? It’s not like he had any real reason to, but still a flare of…jealousy crawled up his spine and burrowed inside the ripples of his brain. He had been in this position before, when him and the girl were younger and he’d see her makeout with another guy or her boyfriend of the time or when he’d hear them fucking in a neighboring room while a young Harry grew overly irritated at the fact someone else was feeling what he’d felt before. He was being immature he knew that, but he didn’t care as he marched over to the pair acting casual despite his mood when he leaned against the dark wood of the polished bar.
Harry rubbed his pointer finger over the wood, collecting a small amount of dust on the digit before tapping his knuckles on the wood getting the attention of the bar tender and the pair he’d been practically stalking since he noticed them together. “Gin and tonic please, love and another one of whatever Y/n had. Put it on my tab, thank yeh” he was always a polite guy, his mother truly raised him well in that aspect and it was refreshing for Y/n to hear the man talking to someone kindly instead of the usual bickering they partake in.
Y/n turned to him on her swiveling barstool, giving him a tipsy soft smile and nod in acknowledgement not noticing the side eye he was giving the man on the other side of her. “Hello Harold” she greeted him using the name she knew got on his nerves, his name was simply Harry yet everyone assumed it was a shortened version of the rather old-fashioned name typically tied to it. Yet, he didn’t bother getting irritated or retorting with something annoying no- his focus was more on the man he had an itch to fire at the moment. He managed to keep his professional nature regardless, “Evening love, hello Marcus what are you lot talkin’ about?” Y/n was more confused on the pet name he’d used towards her than about the harsh gaze he was sending toward the man on her left.
Mark seemed to sense the animosity, knowing his bosses irritated look very well. He opted to respond to his employer with an awkward chuckle a shrug added to it, “Nothin’ much, business and such. Was admiring how she’s runnin’ a company so young just like you. Would be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit jealous.” His free hand went up to scratch the back of his neck, sipping his drink to have a way to cover his nervous lips whilst Harry stared him down. Y/n was honestly a bit amused at the situation at hand, wishing she had some popcorn to go with her fifth vodka soda to enjoy the little testosterone standoff happening. She’s seen Harry get like this a couple times, so she shamelessly added fuel to the fire.
“Yea, and askin’ me if I like older men then following that up with askin’ the oldest man I’ve slept with. It’s been a very professional conversation H, no need to worry.” She knew exactly what she was doing, and she got the reaction she wanted when Mark nervously fiddled with his tie and Harry’s jaw clenched, the action still noticeable in the dim lighting. Y/n was tempted to laugh at the surge of tension she had just created, opting instead to sip her drink as she waited for what was to come next.
Harry straightened himself up, turning to look at the man with a raised eyebrow. “Oh really? That hardly seems appropriate for a work event.” Harry was trying his best not to show the possessive feelings he was having, rather opting for a reprimanding boss act to fit the occasion. “erm…uh was just some casual banter Mister Styles. Might have had one too many, wasn’t using my best judgement…I apologize Y/n” he was rushing his words, obviously anxious to escape the confrontation which Y/n found even funnier. Harry gave the man a curt dismissal with a request to see him in his office on Monday, and in true Y/n fashion she decided to add a second dose of fuel to the fire- calling out to the fleeing man- “The oldest was 54 by the way!” this of course made Mark scurry away faster and Harry lower his gaze to the woman before him with a irritated yet quizzical look.
“54?” his tongue darted out to lick over his lips, a sting of gin hitting the tip of his tongue from the drop lingering on his bottom lip. Y/n shrugged, crunching a rouge ice cube between her back molars while she nodded. “Vegas, tequila, he had major sugar daddy vibes and 19-year-old me was into it.” Y/n was always rather shameless when it came to sex, she’s been sexually active for the majority of her life so the shyness of talking about it left her long ago. Harry snorted slightly, shaking his head with an amused grin at the girl. “Naughty! you’re somethin’ else Y/n. I’m gonna tell your dad.”
“I don’t think his heart could take it, he did an awful lot of blow back in the day so I’d appreciate it if yeh didn’t do that sir.” She rolled her eyes, taking a subtle jab at her less than respectable antics of her filthy rich father. “Seems like you were doing an awful lot of a different version of blow to me.” the man smirked at his own joke getting a light slap on his bicep in return. “Shut up, I haven’t forgotten when you got gonorrhea when you were 18. You’re just as bad as me.” Y/n poked his ribs making Harry groan at the memory, “I got that treated you asshole. I’ve learned to wrap it before I tap it since then and be selective with what I put my dick in now. For the record, all my std tests have come back clean since so fuck you.”
Y/n gave him an innocent smile back, resting her cheek on her fist. “Is that an offer?”
The response wasn’t one Harry was expecting. Not by a long shot, he hasn’t been inside her in a little over a year so her response to his jab took him by surprise. His eyes immediately met hers, finding a curious glance coming from her orbs. Setting down his glass the man turned towards her, facing her completely before responding.
“If you want it to be.”
Y/n smiled at him, standing up from her stool to get closer to the man pulling him down by his collar to talk in his ear. “Your place or mine?”
__
After a painful ten-minute taxi ride, they’d made it to Harrys home. They were well aware of looming neighbors and press so they kept it professional till they were inside the four walls of the mansion- rushing up to his bedroom like two teenagers scared of getting caught. Anxious rushing of feet up the stairs hands struggling to stay to themselves on the way to the king-sized bed waiting for them.
After what seemed like forever, the pair burst into Harry’s bedroom the door hitting the wall with a loud bang as the man lurched forward to smash his lips against hers. It was frantic, sloppy and rough- it was fucking hot.
“you drive me up the fuckin’ wall you know that?” His voice was gruff, heavy with lust and jealous rage. Shoving the woman onto his bed with little care, he knew she liked it rough. A fact confirmed to him after he’d seen the rather violent bdsm porn she had saved to her computer and the various sex toys-including restraints, collars and clamps in a box in her closet 2 years ago when she moved into her current home and forced him to help her put everything away.
Y/n let out a small gasp when her body flew onto the mattress, kicking her heels off after she had settled with a smirk painted on her pretty lips. “Do i?” her tone way teasing, hands moving to unzip her dress while the man moved to stand before her yanking the fabric down her body to leave her in only a silk bra and matching thong, his eyes shamelessly taking in the sight of her body- intimate parts only covered with think sections of emerald green silk fabric.
“Ya know I didn’t appreciate you tellin’ that bloke about other men fuckin’ you, was rather impolite y/n.” Harry gave her a stone cold glare whilst tugging his belt out of the loops of his dress pants, tossing it carelessly behind him as the woman dove forward to work the button and zipper of his trousers undone. “Why? You jealous? Are you jealous because I let other men and women fuck me? Are you mad that you never get to taste me, fuck me and cum with me like they do?”
Y/n’s comments were soon cut off by a ring clad hand wrapped itself around her neck with enough pressure to stall her speech. “You never know when to shut the fuck up huh? We both know full well, no one can fuck yeh the way I do. Now, are you gonna quit your blabbering so I can fuck yeh or do I have to shove this skimpy excuse for underwear down that gabby throat? Hmm? Because I like to hear your dirty moans but I’m not a fan of this snarky mouth baby. Are you going to behave or shall I go have a wank instead?”
The pitiful whine accompanied by a pout coming from the woman made Harry’s cock twitch, she was so desperate for it and he had her right where he wanted her. He soon felt her hands pawing at his crotch, tugging the material of his tight dress pants down his legs before returning to pull his cock from the flap in the front of his boxers. It had been entirely too long since he’d held her small soft hands on his prick, watching with baited breath as her right hand moved to rid herself of the sorry excuse for undergarments she had on.
“Want it in, H please”
He obviously couldn’t say no to that, not when she was giving him those eyes and leaning back to show the web of wetness dripping from her slit onto the sheets below her snapping when she swiped her finger through it to rub on his already leaking tip. She had his head swimming, chest heaving and balls pulsing with every move she made.
The man tossed her body further up the bed, getting between her legs giving her no warning as he sunk completely in. The pressure and harshness of the thrust took her breath away, an overwhelming fullness almost uncomfortable as he gave her no time to adjust before driving into her beautiful body. The sound of her wetness clicking when coming in contact with his hips and filthy groans of pleasure filled the space, the slapping of skin harsh in their ears with every nailing of his pelvis into hers.
“This what yeh needed? No one else fucks yeh so good you can’t breathe do they? Got your face goin’ almost purple, feel my cock in your chest don’t you baby?”
His words were filthy, yet held truth. He pulled halfway out to give her a chance to take a few breaths, the dark redness of her oxygen starved face starting to fade to a flustered pink before he continued his rough ramming. Her nails pierced the skin of his tattooed arms, screams of pleasure rawing her throat when she felt her orgasm about to reach it’s peak.
“Holy fuck!”
Her exclamation was loud, filthy and drenched in sultry bliss as the knot in her stomach unraveled. She tried desperately to climb away from his hammering hips, the stimulation making her entire body feel like it was screaming yet his hands kept her pinned to the bed fucking her relentlessly through her orgasm.
“Fuckin’ hell! Cummin’ hard huh? No one else can make you cum like this, say it. Tell me baby, admit it”
His teeth were clenched painfully tight as he spoke, Y/n struggling to get her words out with the surge of feeling rushing through her nerves managing to ramble out the words almost incoherently.
“That’s fuckin’ right doll, only I can do this to yeh.”
Even with his body on fire, he held his cocky persona pounding into her a few more times until he jerked his hips out just in time to spill his seed onto her heaving stomach. Watching the ribbons of thick white cum paint her flushed sweaty skin, her body trembling from her orgasm violently while being painted with her ‘enemies’ hot cum.
The bed shook when Harry dropped down beside her, breathless and worn out. a proud smirk painted on his sweaty red face when he turned to the woman who was looking at him already struggling to remember how to breathe. Placing a smacking kiss to her swollen lips, a strong arm tugging her into his sticky side.
For the first time in a long time, they felt content in each other’s grasp. Making them both silently wonder if these feelings weren’t just lust, but something else entirely.

i just want some possessive draco fluff 😍
The first time they went clubbing together...
Draco knew rebellion wasn’t a foreign concept for Astoria Greengrass. She might not be the type to flaunt her darker nature like her sister, but Astoria had been rebelling against the system from within since long before the Grffindoors of his age made it look cool.
He hadn’t been surprised to learn Daphne’s sister had dropped out of Hogwarts after the grand battle with intentions of more or less home-school herself with the best private tutors her inheritance could buy, until she was eligible for an apprenticeship in Gringotts. The castle held too many memories, and Astoria liked to pretend she wasn’t broken. Too much false bravado, Draco could relate.
What HAD surprised him was her new choice of lodgings, not that Astoria would ever live somewhere unworthy of the daughter of a pureblood house but the luxury suite she’d rented for the foreseeable future in the upscale muggle London hotel was almost too on the nose for his taste. She was becoming a walking cliche, walking out of her family home and disapearing into the nightlife of the muggle world to party her guilty conscience away.
Everyone knew this rebellious phase of hers would eventually pass. Astoria wasn’t actually angry inside. Just tired and lost, which was why nobody was worried about her, nobody but Draco.
“Oh come on you’ll love it, please, wear a costume” Astoria laughed adjusting her Flapper girl headband “What’s the point in visiting me in my den of iniquity if you wont join me at the club”
Draco rolled his eyes taking her in “This isn’t a den of iniquity Astoria, it’s a toy playhouse and you know it, I don’t see the appeal those muggles have for you”
“Oh posh you sound like mother, well, have it your way, I’m going to the club costume part and I’m..I’m going to kiss many boys” Astoria was displeased at his grumpy attitude, she was having so much fun forgetting about the war with the muggles before he arrived to make her feel things again, what a killjoy. Muggle boys were much more simple than purebloods, they only cared that Astoria was pretty.
“No you wont” Draco snarled and changed into a dark suit, following her out the door.
He knew he wouldn’t be here if he didn’t like her, she’d been there when he was going down the darkest path he could travel and he’d never forgotten her tears. When he asked her to run for her life (and she’d listened, she always listened to him). And now, as her saw her tethering in the edge, he had to do something to keep her from slipping away from the magic world (like so many were doing after Voldemort’s defeat)
“I assume you are here to tell me this is all a phase and blah blah blah” Astoria raised an eyebrow at his dark suit and impeccable tie “Because I know for a fact you hate muggle entertainment” but still she made him apparate her into the nightclub district and dragged him past a burly bouncer into a place called ‘Scandal’ because apparently all that he was good for lately was to do ‘big’ magic for her while she still remained under the trace.
“Is it so strange of me to want to see where the most beautiful girl I know has disapeared to?” It had only been a few months since the war, but he’d come looking for her, if only because Astoria, even in her party girl phase, made him feel safe “I want to know what’s so attractive about these things”
“Oblivion” was all she answered, like if she were revealing a big secret “Come dance with me Malfoy, pick up your feet, move to the music”
“I don’t dance in-front of muggles” he spat with unnecessary annoyance “ the music in this place is too loud”
“That’s the idea Mr horntail, people don’t exactly come to these places to talk” she was smiling that secretive smile of hers, only now it looked more beguiling, and he briefly noted how he’d never seen her wear lipstick that red before “but have it your way, keep our table in the VIP section, I’m going to wear off these high heels”
The costume party was already in full swing by the time he settled into the large lounge chair and ordered some muggle thing that wouldn’t do anything to his firewhiskey touched system. And as he watched Astoria dance, he knew he wasn’t going to leave unless she came back with him.
Astoria Greengrass in her usual ladylike clothes was beautiful, Astoria Greengrass in a blue flapper dress, wearing red lipstick and high heels was stunning. And the men around her could see it.
She was delicate, but determined as she moved to the beat of the music, her innocence was something that barely escaped the horrors of Voldemort, so her movements, while perfectly classic to the tune of a 20′s song, were tinged with an edge of seduction she wasn’t aware she was projecting. A muggle man dressed as a gladiator asked her to dance rapidly and Draco had to suffer watching her sway and twirl in the arms of that magic-less idiot for ten whole minutes.
She truly was the most beautiful girl in the club, and Draco had the almost animalistic urge to pull her from the dance-floor and sit her in his lap, announcing wordlessly how ‘his’ that girl was. Except that she wasn’t. Draco didn’t even know what he felt for her, or where that feeling of pure hatred against that idiot dancing with Astoria came from, but it made him want to bare his teeth and tell him to back off and move away from little Greengrass.
The man leaned in and put his arm around her waist whispering something in her ear that made her giggle, which had Draco reaching for his wand and instinctively wondering how to hex the idiot into a painful death.
By the time the muggle pulled away and began the rhythmic sequence that the song demanded, Draco was already out of his seat.
Astoria in the meantime was making sure Draco enjoyed the view and paid for not dancing with her when he had the chance. She danced with the grace of a girl who lived for the moment. Tyler, the guy dancing with her currently, seems to agree to everything she said over the music.
“And who are you supposed to be?” She asked looking at his gladiator costume “Spartacus?”
“Mark Anthony” he leaned in a bit to whisper to her ear again, in what was supposed to be a well practiced move but only served to annoy Astoria “What do you say girlie, want to be my Cleopatra if the night ends well?”
“Well, I did say I would find a cute boy to kiss tonight” She said very, very loudly.
“And I did say, No you wont” came a menacing growl behind her, pulling her away from her new friend “I changed my mind about the dance Little Greengrass”
“Hey! she was with me mate” The muggle gladiator protested “It’s a club and if a lady says she wants to...” the rest of the words died in his mouth when Draco stepped a little closer and glared down at him. The tall menacing looking young man next to the little flapper exuded wealth and privilege, the kind that has enough money to get away with murder and knows it.
“You were saying?” Draco raised an eyebrow bringing Astoria closer to him
“That I didn’t know she had a boyfriend already” The muggle gladiator grumbled under his breath “Figures, a flapper in these parties is never too far away from her mobster, just my luck”
Neither Draco nor Astoria commented on his erroneous assumption, instead Astoria put her arms around Draco’s neck and smiled “That was rude”
“He was undressing you with his eyes” they began to dance slowly, but seductively with each other, each movement bringing them closer together.
“So are you” Astoria breathed into his neck as he pulled her flush against his body in an expert movement “In fact the way your hands feel right now, it looks like it’s not only the eyes planning on doing the undressing”
“Maybe I’m coming to realize that dancing in muggle clubs does have its merits” his hands continued exploring her back, tracing the seam of her undergarments with lazy confidence, making her feel every inch of him pressed as she was to his chest as some obscure singer droned in the background about love and romance “is this what you say brings you oblivion?”
“No” she whispered “Oblivion means forgetting, dancing with you is nothing like that, I want to remember every part of this”
Draco grinned “Good, because I plan to do this all night” Now that he knew how good it felt, he was going to make sure that Astoria was never tempted to seek out another dance partner...Now or ever.
He might not know what he felt about her, but he didn’t want to let her go. At least not in the foreseeable future.

I Travel Troubled Oceans: Chapter 19 - In Which Jack and Charles Secure Planning Permission and Max Micromanages
Mary had liked several of Charles's photographs of Jack and the workroom and the half-finished fashions enough to post them to Instagram. And she'd liked the photograph of Charles all decked out in silk and countless jewels enough to use it as the title page for a more formal press announcement of the upcoming fashion show. The word “DECADENCE” is emblazoned across a glossy version of the picture in a stark, masculine font.
And then, in slightly smaller font underneath: Jack Rackham – Fall/Winter 2009.
His name. His name. Not quite in lights, but there, for everyone to see. For everyone to know that he is the one who did this. That these accomplishments are his.
Not that he did it all himself, of course. Mary's role is obvious. Christine is indispensable. And it's Charles's face on the cover of his press release.
The may have called Charles his muse as a joke. It seems like the sort of thing a flamboyant fashion designer would call his favorite booty call. Just the right side of pretentiously obfuscating for the older guard who might not be ready for the party boy persona they've both adopted.
But the honest truth is that Jack's come to rely on Charles in a way he hadn't quite expected for this con.
It's not exactly in Chaz's wheelhouse, is the thing. But he's worked hard to learn skills outside bashing skulls, just as Anne has.
Not that he doesn't do plenty of that as well. And gotten some good information out of it. But he's more than the street thug he'd been for so long. And Jack can't say he misses those days – not when the days they have now are so much easier.
So much less full of fear and strife and poverty.
It's almost like an extended holiday, the way they live now. All getting to pretend they're rich and soft and genteel. Getting to walk among the special, the exalted, the beautiful people. The ones with titles and money and pedigree. The ones with names that mean something.
Well now Jack's name means something too.
And not through an accident of birth. Through cleverness and planning. Through luck, of course, but also through plain hard work. Something those gilded, pampered elite would never understand.
--
Charles has been given a slight reprieve in lugging armoires around. The old Hennessy house has been emptied of all the furniture, finally, and Mary's light rigs have all been installed. All the walls repainted and all the pictures of grand empty rooms taken.
But then Max sees the reaction the upper crust have to those pictures. All the ruined grandeur on display, just to be knocked over to make way for progress, for new ways of making money – they fucking love it, the rich brainless investment fuckers.
So now Max wants to take advantage of that greed she's awoken in the elitist twits in thousand pound suites. That desire for wealth, for faded grandeur, for a past of riches and glory and conquest. But brought into the future. Brought into the now. So they can pretend England isn't just some pretentious backwater with delusions of grandeur, with visions of glory (that was never all that glorious) long past.
So Mary decides, yeah, it would be a fucking great idea to do a little promotional photo shoot of all the models for Jack's fashion show in the house, before it gets demolished. Jewel bright clothes, sparkling gems, enough gold to sink a fucking warship, all juxtaposed – that'd been the word she'd used - all fucking juxtaposed against the backdrop of the ruined townhouse.
So Jack'd worked like a fiend to get the clothes ready. And Charles's break is over.
Now he gets to lug around garment bags and makeup trunks and jewelry chests and even more light rigs – all to be placed precisely where Mary dictates, and moved with the changing light or her changing whims. All that shit's fucking heavy. And Anne's no help this time because she's been set to wrangling all the models and making sure they're properly primped and preened and posed for the photos. All under Max and Mary's watchful eyes.
Cuz Max has apparently decided that she wants to have her hand in things personally.
Not that she hadn't kept things well in hand with Jack's other fashion show – finding the models, organizing the behind the scenes contracts. Setting Idelle up with Featherstone.
But now she's actually telling Mary how she wants the pictures to look. Or more specifically, that she wants some big fancy painting in all the shots. Not the whole paining, though. Just pieces of it. Enough to tantalize, to excite, but not to show the goods.
There's even a picture where the models are holding it at the front of the shot, but it's covered by a lacy black cloth, all except for one corner, which pokes out like a whore's ankle in some repressed 1700s pin up.
Charles thinks the whole thing's fucking unnecessary. Who gives a shit if there's a painting showing too much or too little in the shot? Why does he have to be the one to move it over and over again – sometimes millimeter by fucking millimeter – until Max deems it just right? He's got other things to do with his day, thank you very fucking much.
Like pretending to be Jack's ditsy muscular boytoy, and all the hours in the gym and gossiping by the pool that takes to maintain. He better get another fucking break when all this shit is over.
--
With investors sniffing at Max's skirts like rabid jackals, ready to rip each other apart for a chance at the Hennessy townhouse, Jack broaches the topic of planning permission to Councilor Featherstone. And he does it over dinner in a private room at a restaurant where the esteemed councilor could never have gotten a reservation – and especially not on such short notice. Because for all that he has power. For all that he attends all the right clubs – the same clubs Jack himself attends. Well, the councilor's a bit of a social outcast. A bit of a dud in the personality department.
Whereas Jack is all glib charm and meaningless flirtation. Jack knows how to play the sort of high society games that result in the private table on nearly no notice that the councilor is currently enjoying.
What is it they say? Always come to the negotiating table with the outcome already certain? Well, Jack's doing his damnedest to stack the deck in his favor. And if a little show of how well connected he is, how much more he belongs in this world of high-society fops and casual displays of obscene wealth, is what it takes to get Max her planning permission, then Jack will wine and dine Featherstone at the goddamn Ritz if he has to.
Although the slightly less-upscale, though no less entrenched in British upper-class hegemony, restaurant he's chosen for tonight seems to be doing the trick well enough. Councilor Featherstone is looking around with ill disguised awe.
If he were slightly more uncouth, Jack imagines his jaw would be actually agape at all the gilt and velvet and fine linens and sparkling crystal. As it is, it's more than obvious Jack has introduced him to a style of dining out that he's never experienced before. Perfect.
The entire point of this little excursion is to underline to Councilor Featherstone what a... fruitful... relationship they can have. All Jack's connections and wealth at the councilor's fingertips – and all he needs to do is pass the occasional planning permission for a project that otherwise may have languished in limbo for years. And to that end, Charles is doing his considerable best to bring the conversation around to where Jack needs it to go, namely planning permission for the Hennessy house.
A conversation that demonstrates that Charles has become considerably more subtle than Jack ever believed him capable of.
And perhaps that is an oversight on Jack's own part. Him never deigning to look past Charles's rough and unpolished exterior to hidden – really very well hidden – depths. Known for a straightforward style of smash and grab, Charles has really developed a mind for strategy of late. And something of a silver tongue, though it doesn't come close to rivaling Jack's own.
At any rate, Jack appreciates his efforts. Lord Hamilton may have been willing to come right out and ask for little favors, so assured of his power and his place in the London hierarchy he would eschew subtlety entirely - but there's such a thing as being too forward.
Jack finds that method rather gauche. And the last thing he wishes to be is gauche.
Plus, Jack would rather have the councilor's regard – his friendship, even if it is a tad one-sided – than his fear purchased compliance. Because fear may breed deference in the short term, but it leads to chafing at the yoke in the long run. And Councilor Featherstone didn't get to where he is today by being a complete pushover.
So Charles is sitting in this opulent private dining room, as the councilor sips champagne and enjoys expensive hors d'oeuvres, chatting to Idelle about a spa he went to with some of his “friends” from the health club. Which isn't even a lie. Charles had in fact attended a quote girls day unquote at an upscale spa courtesy of one of the women who lounges poolside and looks over her designer sunglasses at the tanned skin Charles is so very unconcerned with putting on display.
The fact that it was a nude spa may have had something to do with Charles being invited. But it sounds as if Charles had a nice enough time. Or at least he's talking it up to Idelle, who makes suitable sounds of impressed jealousy as the story unfolds. Commenting that she'd rather like to be taken to something like that – perhaps on a date?
Personally, Jack would pay enormous amounts of money to not see Featherstone in the alltogether – but Idelle is a consummate professional and lets no sign of displeasure at the idea show. Maybe Max ought to consider giving her a raise. Jack resolves to raise the issue once planning permission has been secured. Speaking of -
“The only thing,” Charles says, voice measured to ensure that Councilor Featherstone is paying the utmost attention. “The only thing I didn't particularly care for was how crowded the spa was.”
“Indeed,” Jack butts in, “that hardly sounds relaxing. Being surrounded by all the teeming masses.”
“Oh, the actual spa part was lovely. So relaxing after a long, hectic week...”
Jack can see Councilor Featherstone's scoffing disbelief that Charles could have anything resembling a hectic week – his schedule filled with nothing more than lounging in various decorous poses on various expensive surfaces, as far as the councilor is aware. But he has some long, hectic weeks at work...
“But as soon as you're back in the more public areas, all that work at relaxing and destressing – gone!”
“Oh, how terrible!” Idelle exclaims with just the right amount of dramatic disbelief.
“And it was supposed to be one of the more exclusive spa packages as well. You think money would go a bit further nowadays, is all,” Charles finishes. And now all that's left to do is set up the pitch...
Right on cue, Idelle chimes in with, “Too bad there isn't a more private spa. Someplace intimate.” The last is directed at Featherstone, who's blushing and looks primed for the sell.
“Funny you should mention that,” Jack says causally – but not too casually. That's the key. They have to think you're playing them a little so they won't look too deeply at how you're actually playing them. “I happen to have a friend who's looking to start up a little boutique hotel spa. You know where the Hennessy townhouse is?”
The councilor nods, although Jack doubts he was ever actually invited there.
“Well, my friend got it for a song. They were looking to move to warmer climes, you know. And she got an excellent deal for the whole package – house and furniture and everything. Which turned out to be a good thing! The whole place was falling apart, if you can believe. Just completely structurally unsound.” Jack says the last part as if it's the most boring thing in the world.
“So anyway, she's looking to rebuild. Plenty of investors already lined up around the block, of course. And there's mixed zoning, you know. And she doesn't exactly need yet another house to sit empty and eat up heating costs. Plus the cleaning service – you know how much they'll gauge you.”
Pretending that the councilor has a maid service – when Jack knows for certain he doesn't, which is why he doesn't entertain at home much – is another stab at just how different he is from the upper crust.
“Yes, of course,” Councilor Featherstone responds. “They'll take an arm and a leg.”
“So she came on the idea of the hotel and spa. For the country set, or celebrities, or whoever wants a little privacy when visiting the city.” Rich men with mistresses. Government officials with less than acceptable girlfriends. Whoever.
“That sounds lovely,” Idelle chimes in. “Perhaps we might do a spa day there sometime, dear.”
“Oh. Oh I don't know,” the councilor responds, obviously thinking of the enormous price tag attached to something like that.
“We could do a double date,” Charles gushes. “Oh, Idelle! What an excellent idea!”
“Oh, I'm certain I could arrange something like that,” Jack is quick to assure the increasingly panicked looking councilor. “Given that the proposal comes from a close personal friend. I imagine I can talk her into pulling a few strings with whoever purchases the building so we get first crack at it.”
A delicate pause. Calculated to be just enough to let the councilor experience euphoric relief that his problem has been solved - that Jack has been the one to solve it – before bringing it all crashing down.
“Of course, that's assuming the project moves forward any time in the next decade. You of all people know what London real estate is like.”
“You said the lot was zoned for mixed use?” Featherstone asks desperately. He's so close to giving Idelle her heart's desire of the current moment and he can see it slipping away.
Jack nods.
He's not even lying. There are several businesses on that street dating to just after the Great London Fire that necessitate the designation. Plus one unbearably posh cupcake bakery charging upwards of a tenner for a single cupcake.
“Well, then it should be no problem. I can even take a look at everything personally - just to make sure it's all in order, of course.”
“Oh, darling!” Idelle exclaims rapturously. “Would you?”
“Of course, dear. Anything for you.”
Perfect.
Charles grins at Jack, wolflike. And then steers the conversation to other idle gossip about the rich and famous.
Best not to let the councilor dwell too long on what just happened.

The Dancer-Epilogue

Epilogue
Jamie spent every evening with Claire and Brian, enjoying family dinners, outings as the weather warmed up, and he held Claire in his arms before he went home. Try as he might, his upbringing prevented him from sleeping with Claire, at least to Brian’s knowledge, before they were married. Most nights they would make passionate love while Brian slept and came close to being caught only once in the first three months.
Several deals were struck after the fateful day at the bookstore. Those included a timeout for discussing what had come to pass during their separation. A date was set like a business meeting eight weeks in the future. On that day they met at the bookstore and shut themselves away from the world until all the facts had been heard and all questions answered.
Jamie started with the events after Claire left his home, heartbroken, and drove back to Edinburgh. He described his despair at seeing the photos of Jenny’s beating, arriving at the hospital in such a state he was tased, handcuffed, and arrested, twice. He was kept in jail for three days each time. The third time he went to the hospital he remained calm and learned she had been moved to an undisclosed place. He spoke about disinheriting his sister and having no contact before or after her trial. She was still in prison but would have a parole hearing in the coming year that he would not participate in. Lallybroch was boarded up and Jenny’s animals sold. She would live there upon her release unless she violated the rules of the court.
Jamie was promoted to Germany, as he expected and functioned at a low level for two years trying to find his joy again. On a trip to Edinburgh, he met Geneva Dunsany. After a long-distance relationship, she demanded marriage or else. He just felt dead inside. A letter was given to John at the Edinburgh store to be forwarded to Jamie. John could only say the pretty woman had red hair. The letter stated that Geneva was one of the drunk friends who participated in death threats against Claire the night of the beating, showing her support for Jenny. Geneva was put on the next flight to Edinburgh and never seen again.
Just before he lost his mind completely, he resigned his position that he had worked so hard for, endured so many lonely years for.
“I hired a private detective to find ye but ye just vanished. I knew ye were alive, somewhere, because I would feel the difference in the world if ye were not. I bought a used bookstore, renamed it and put the classics room in first thing so I could see yer name on the outside and the inside every day. I thought ye might come back to London someday and wanted to put the stores everywhere so ye would see one and go inside. It felt like ye were workin with me, seein yer name every day. It made me feel better. I brought John back to London and put him in charge of the new stores once they were up and running. So, now I am CEO of a growin chain of upscale used bookstores because of you. On yer birthday, every year, I spent the day in the classics room, my Sassenach’s heart, and I read until the store closed, always with..." Jamie's head dropped and he took a deep breath, "a fresh bouquet in yer honor love.”
Claire sat on his lap and hugged him, hearing his tears for his heartbroken existence.
“Thank you, Jamie.”
They kissed for a bit and Jamie held her arms panting. “It’s yer turn lass.”
Claire explained she was in Egypt before she knew what was happening. Her friends Madu and Kamilah were from wealthy families in Cairo and Jadda, Madu’s father, arranged everything. Madu later told her the surgeon that removed her spleen told him about the pregnancy, but they expected she would lose the baby. In Cairo, she didn’t eat or awaken for many months so she was fed by a stomach tube. Madu forced her to listen and wake up, telling her about the baby that had continued to grow while she slept month after month. She explained the painful journey back to the living and how Madu’s family was always there to encourage her. Jaddati, Madu’s mother, started calling her abnataya, the Egyptian word for daughter. When Brian was born the whole family was eager to care for him and his Jadda and Jaddati fell in love with him, as did Madu.
“It was a special time for me, being held into a family because I never had one. Madu, Brian, and I were inseparable. I tried so hard to love him romantically and my failure to do so was as painful for me as it was for him. Without warning, Madu dropped to the floor one night when an aneurysm ruptured. He was dead before anyone could reach for a phone to call emergency. He was my best friend, my savior, and my family. I miss him every day."
Jamie lifted Claire to her feet and pulled her into his lap where he held her while she cried for her amazing friend. He realized Brian was too young to remember, but he knew all about Madu and felt sadness at his passing.
“Yer an incredible person Sassenach. Madu will live on in Brian’s heart because ye shared yer memory of this special man.”
Claire sat down in her chair again, ready to continue. She told Jamie about Geillis and how devoted to each other they had been. How they cried when Claire called after two years and were now besties again with regular visits to London.
”The house we live in was arranged by Jadda, I think he bought it so we would have a decent place to live. Right after we moved in I couldn’t find Brian and I panicked until I opened the front door and there he was, standing near the curb of our street. He told me Habbi, told him to stand there and wait for me. Habbi is Madu. I had Brian baptized when we returned to London, Geillis is his Godmother and Madu his spirit Godfather. I hope you don’t mind.”
“I canna think of two better people in the entire world love.”
“It’s your turn,” she whispered.
Jamie realized that Claire was spent emotionally. He led her to his office and turned out the lights before pulling her into his arms to lay next to him on the couch. She could hear his Gaelic speech through his chest and found great comfort there.
They hugged in silence for a while until Jamie gave her every reason to change course and draw that line between them again.
“Sassenach, love, will ye marry me?”
Claire’s head lifted abruptly to look at him and her mouth slowly smiled as he watched the answer play across her face.
“C’mon lass, dinna say no to yer soulmate," he teased. "I figure you will be my partner in the bookstores and bring yer magic to the enterprise. We can open a new store each year and Brian will see the world living short term in each location. When he starts school, we take off for cities near and far in the summer, like a three-month vacation every year. Do ye know anythin about a website?”
“Whoa Sassenach, tears? Dinna break my heart love.”
“I have a new job at the cultural center, one Sunday each month, we dance exhibition and I am the lead belly dancer. It’s in Madu’s memory I want to dance Jamie. How do you feel about that?”
She watched his eyes and saw him go into his head, still smiling, she waited and worried. When he looked at her several minutes later his skin had a rosy glow and his eyes sparkled.
“This means I get to keep both of ye Sassenach.”
“I suppose it does” she giggled.
************************** “Ma'am?”
Claire pushed her sunglasses up her nose and handed Geillis her drink. She thanked the waiter and handed him a tip before laying back on her lounge. The girls were treated to a spa day compliments of Jamie and it was a slice of heaven for both of them.
“Mmm, what a fantastic buzz and a beautiful spa. Remind me to thank Jamie. What is up with your weird drinks Claire? That looks like bubbles in water for Christ's sake.”
“It is club soda, on the rocks. Why you ask? Because I can’t have alcohol for the next year. I’ll have to give up belly dancing before long also.”
Geillis rolled her head toward Claire and pulled her sunglasses down. “What?”
Geillis’s eyes grew wide and she sat up looking at her best friend. “Are ye sayin ye got a bairn in there again?”
“Almost positive. That’s what happens when the love of your life shows up and you’re not on birth control. Please, not a word at home. I am telling Jamie tonight right after Brian goes to bed and before he goes home of course.”
“Thank heavens he can stay at yer house after tomorrow.”
Claire was on pins and needles through dinner while Geillis chatted on and on with Jamie and Brian. She needed to calm down and excused herself from dinner. Sitting alone on her bed, she remembered a sadness so deep and a country so foreign, it stole her reason to live. Now her life was so full of blessings it was hard to feel connected to that person anymore.
When Jamie came in, he pulled her into his arms and just hugged her.
“What is it, love? Are ye havin second thoughts?”
She shook her head and pulled him down to the bed to lay next to her. They could hear Brian and Geillis laughing in the kitchen and felt no need to rush.
Jamie watched her face, waiting. He felt his heart rate shoot up as her eyes locked on his.
“The three of us won’t be going to Florida next month. We are actually a family of four now.”
She pulled his hand to her abdomen as the tears were squeezing out the side of her eyes. She watched Jamie’s face go from confused to enlightened and his Adam’s apple bobbed in his throat as he tried to swallow.
“Is there …a bairn… comin …lass?” His voice was a croaked whisper like he was afraid to say it out loud.
Claire nodded her head and Jamie exhaled the breath he was holding as his smile grew. He kissed her long and hard followed by dozens of kisses on her face with I love you’s in between until Claire was panting for breath and laughing.
Jamie kissed his bride after a civil ceremony with Geillis standing for Claire and Brian standing as Jamie’s best man. He pressed his forehead against hers and felt she had gifted him with a second chance at life. He was so grateful for her strength to survive, her heart to forgive, and the joy they made together.
Five hundred and thirty-five miles north a prisoner held court while her underlings brought her food and cigarettes. Jenny smiled at her hard-won position in the unit and daydreamed about returning home after so many years.
But that is another story.
It is my privilege to write for this fandom. I love you guys for the encouraging comments and for reading.
