The Best self-care is Skin-care!
Beyond the Basics
So you’ve gotten the basics down. You’re washing your face twice a day, taking off your makeup at night and wearing sunscreen. You’re now ready for something a bit fancier. Let us go over a few options!
Sheet masks are a great option to add to your routine. And thanks to the popularity of korean skin care, they are everywhere and a million of them. They are filled with serum, and the cloth-like masks keeps it close to the skin, allowing for extended absorption. I love them. I have a drawer of them. I keep telling myself “no more masks until I finish the ones I have.” aaaand, then I buy more at the salon cause its a korean brand I’ve never seen in person before. Or because its a set that works out to about a dollar each.
Tumblr media
I bet you thought I was joking
Luckily they do come in every price range, from about a dollar at the drugstore, to the fancy ones at sephora that can go for $30. Best results come from using them regularly, they aren't going to do miracles overnight. Wash and tone your skin, then sheet mask, pat in the leftover serum and moisturize to seal all the goodness in.
Mud masks are great for absorbing and cleansing, so use them after you wash your face, but before your regular routine. They can make your face a bit dry, so start off slow if you are in the dry skin category, or just apply to the oily parts of your face.
Peeling masks…. Ehh, I’m not that sold on them. They are good for occasional use, to take out blackheads if you’re prone to them. But they can be irritating, I’d rather use a liquid peel.
Sleep masks, also sold as sleep packs, are thick creams to be put on last before for you go to bed. This allows the thicker product to penetrate deeper and provide long-lasting moisture and repair.
Toners! Probably the most confusing section of the skin care aisle. Salicylic acids, pore-refining, witch hazel… its the second step after cleansing your skin. In america, it tends to be a more astringent product, to take off extra oils, to apply an acne product, or to tighten the skin. Ideally, it should prepare the skin for the rest of your routine. Avoid ones with alcohol, or any that burn or make you feel too dried out. I’m very fond of the rose-based face mists (which are good any time of the day to give you a bit of moisture or refreshment when you’re hot and sweaty) and using them as toners.
Serums, essences and ampules: if you have been reading about korean skincare, you’ve probably heard about these. These are the nutrition-delivering, skin-correcting steps to your face care. (they may also be labeled as lotions or toners. We’ll go over the k-beauty method in detail in a later article.) They are applied in layers from thinnest to thickest, to allow for the best penetration. The nice thing is you can use several different products to address different issues you may have, or just one if you feel like it. It's very customizable.
Essences tend to be the lightest, serums a bit thicker and in smaller bottles, and ampules are very concentrated, sometimes coming in a week’s worth of tiny containers. (and if you have dry sheet masks, you can diy a mask treatment with your bottle of serum!)
To apply, put a few drops on your fingers, rub your hands together to spread, and press into your skin. Don’t rub, it absorbs better when you press. Allow a minute or two to absorb before adding another layer. Don’t forget to apply to your neck and decollete (the fancy word for the skin of your upper chest. The skin here is thin, often exposed to the sun, and needs love too!)  A bit of a dewy glow afterwards is a good thing! Allow yourself to experiment here, try different things and see what you like!
This all should be fun, not work. If you’re dry one day because of the weather or the electric heat in your house, add more moisture. If you’re greasy because the AC has died or you’re hormonal, thinner products that day. This is you time. You taking care of you.
Please like or reblog this article! Next week we’ll go over common ingredients and what they do! Stay glowing!

8 Korean Skincare Brands You Need To Know About
Tumblr media
Korean skincare routines are some of the most widely followed and renowned around the world.
That’s because of their effective, closely-researched, naturally-derived ingredients, and secrets to fresh, dewy skin that has been used for centuries, originating from Jeju Island, South Korea’s ultimate skincare hub.
With these products, you’ll nourish your skin from the inside out, and might even want to stop wearing makeup due to your natural radiance.
Here are eight must-try K-Beauty brands for 2018.
Innisfree
This brand most recently launched its color clay mask series, which we’re obsessed with and is less than ten bucks. Innisfree creates products with all-natural powerhouse bases such as volcanic ash sourced from Jeju Island’s soil, green tea, tangerine and lava seawater.
Products are effective yet gentle, and the price point makes us want to buy the whole store. Try starting with their pore-clearing clay mousse mask, which soared in popularity last year for being an overnight acne treatment that absorbs impurities.
Etude House
Etude House’s signature style is a little more femme – it’s known for its pink and girly themes, from their website to packaging, but don’t let the marketing fool you. These products really work and don’t sacrifice quality for affordability.
Their must-have award-winning product is Moistfull collagen cream, which is a lightweight floral pre-makeup moisturizer with water particles that have a cooling effect on the skin. Complete your moisturizing game by pairing with its matching eye cream.
Klairs Cosmetics
Klairs Cosmetics is the ultimate for sensitive skin; it’s fragrance-free and doesn’t contain colorants, alcohol or parabens. Klairs prides itself on simplicity.
Their sunscreen is a fantastic alternative to pore-clogging drugstore brands, and most notable items are their “blue” products (fans rave about their midnight blue calming cream) as well as the vitamin-infused ones such as the freshly juiced vitamin E mask.
They carry a hydrating range for all skin types, and seasons, making Klairs your go-to year-round line.
Tony Moly
Cheeky brand Tony Moly is known for its vast range of masks that merits a “Mask Bar” dropdown and is all-around $5. Choose between patches, wash off masks, sleeping masks, or sheet masks, mixing and matching to your heart’s desire.
But Tony Moly isn’t a one-trick pony. They also offer cleansing products, serums, lotions, eye care, and lip treatments.
Their Tako pore sets are by far our favorite. Within these adorable containers lies a powerful blend of marine plant extract, black mud, and peat water, all of which help rid your skin of impurities.
Dr. Jart
Dr. Jart has international success in 15 countries across four continents, and there’s a reason for that. This brand prides its success based on dedication to research and science; they work with 15 dermatologists from 15 different clinics, who are all doing groundbreaking work in their respective fields.
Best of all, you can find their products on Sephora’s website, where you can choose from a range of options like weird but innovative rubber face masks, as well as their Cicapair line which is highly soothing and moisturizing due to Tiger Grass, a century-old healing ingredient that has been used in Asia in the wild by tigers to heal wounds and infections.
Mizon
A lot of Asian beauty treatments are notorious for containing snail slime, and Mizon’s regenerative snail repair cream solves a variety of skin issues is definitive proof of that, with a 92% snail secretion filtrate and the addition of plant extracts.
Results are outstanding, immediate, and non-irritating. Their pore-refining deep cleansing foam and super-hydrating gel cream are also Mizon bestsellers, but we suggest starting with the snail cream, as it’s the most raved-about item they offer and has a high amount of snail secretion as opposed to other pricier options on the market.
Secret Key
If you’re looking to glow up, Secret Key’s starting treatment essence products have Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, a powerful brightening agent for skin. The formula is free of nasty chemicals, instead of soothing skin with chamomile, hazel and green tea extracts.
Many of their fermentation essences soften and hydrate the skin while providing that unbeatable glow, and also has proven anti-aging results.
Their AC control mist powered with bee venom nips bacteria in the bud acts as a toner and quickly soothes skin. Secret Key is one of the top brands at the forefront of “nature-beauty-science,” as they put it.
Blossom Jeju
You can’t get closer to Jeju Island than the Blossom Jeju skincare line. Here, your skin’s BFF and the signature ingredient in many products is Jeju Camellia Oil, which leaves skin dewy and supple.
The winter-blooming flower Camellia, harvested for centuries, was famous for giving the women who harvested it radiant skin and thick, shining hair due to its nourishing properties.
The oil of Camellia is chock full of oleic acid, vitamins, and a variety of Omegas, as well as a fast absorption rate. It also has the highest amounts of naturally occurring antioxidants within the world of botanically derived oil. So try their dry oil and experience the wonders for yourself.

Restrictions and Exclusions
Now, on top my top picks!
Editor’s Picks: Makeup Removers, Cleansers and Toners
Makeup removers: For a clean alternative to drugstore micellar water, I love BIOeffect and Caudalie. They're both super gentle, but still highly effective. Tarte also has a new clean formula that's on my list!
Gel cleansers: The gel cleanser from Indie Lee is my favourite, suitable for all but the driest skin. You also can't go wrong with Youth to the People or Drunk Elephant. If you're oily, check out the new one from Caudalie.
Foaming cleansers: If you splurge on one cleanser, make it Omorovicza's. Even though it foams, it's non-drying and oh so luxurious. I also recommend the foaming cleansers from Caudalie, Dr Roebuck's, Consonant and Go-To.
Cream cleansers: For a creamy, nourishing cleanse, Dr Roebuck's, Naturally Serious, Omorovicza and Kora Organics are your best bets.
Face wipes: Both Kopari and RMS Beauty make coconut oil-based wipes that are great for taking off makeup. For on-the-go, Consonant's wipes are super refreshing and feel great on the skin.
Toners: Indie Lee and First Aid Beauty are good hydrating toners, while Herbivore and Caudalie are more astringent.
Editor’s Picks: Exfoliators
AHA exfoliators: Lactic acid is my AHA of choice, so I'd go for one of the options from Go-To, Sephora Collection, Peter Thomas Roth or The Inkey List. For a slightly stronger exfoliation, I also like the combo lactic and glycolic acid formulas from Youth to the People and First Aid Beauty.
BHA exfoliators: That said, I will always prefer BHAs because they not only exfoliate the skin surface, but also clean your pores. Try First Aid Beauty, The Inkey List, Caudalie, Dermalogica or Juice Beauty.
AHA-BHA exfoliators: Can't decide? There are also AHA-BHA blends from Herbivore (which was recently reformulated), Sephora Collection, Tarte, Omorovicza, Moon Juice, Tata Harper and Dr. Dennis Gross.
Best powder exfoliators: If you can't tolerate acids, consider the exfoliators from Tatcha and Dermalogica, which use enzymes to gently dissolve dead skin.
Editor’s Picks: Mists, Essences and Serums
Mists: Some new mists that should be on your radar are Tower 28, Skinfix and Youth to the People, which are all hydrating and calming for sensitive skin. I've also been loving the Tatcha and BIOeffect mists, which absorb oil and mattify the skin. Plus, I always recommend Caudalie, Dr Roebuck's, Tata Harper and Herbivore (which was just reformulated).
Essences: When it comes to essences, SK-II was the original and in my opinion, it's still the best. However, it's pricey, so try Tatcha's instead if you are on a budget.
Serums: Everyone needs a hydrating serum (or two) in their skincare wardrobe, whether to wear alone under sunscreen or layered under creams and oils. My top picks include Indie Lee, Caudalie, StackedSkincare, Drunk Elephant, Dr Roebuck's, Moon Juice and Consonant. Or, if you have a big serum budget, Dr. Barbara Sturm!
Editor’s Picks: Moisturizers, Eye Creams and Face Oils
Moisturizers: If you like a lightweight cream or gel-cream, give the formulas from Dr Roebuck's, Tata Harper or Volition a go. If you want something more nourishing, I'm a huge fan of LXMI and the other two creams from Dr Roebuck's (No Worries and Nuddy).
Eye creams: As someone with a very sensitive eye area, I've had success with the eye treatments from Indie Lee, Caudalie, Dr Roebuck's and Drunk Elephant. Also check out the new eye creams from Tatcha and Biossance.
Face oils: It's no secret that I'm a fan of squalane oil, so Indie Lee, Biossance and The Inkey List are all great investments. But lately, I've been using the Kopari coconut oil instead and loving it. (And no, it doesn't break me out, even though I'm acne-prone!) For an oil blend, Herbivore (both Lapis and Orchid) are lovely. If your skin is dry and non-acne-prone, you might like Drunk Elephant's marula oil.
Editor’s Picks: Sunscreens
Face sunscreens: As you know, I'm all about high-protection mineral sunscreen, and I have a new love: REN! If you find most SPFs too greasy and heavy, I'd highly recommend giving it a try. My other picks in the store are from Drunk Elephant (both Umbra Sheer and Umbra Tinte) and Juice Beauty. The new Naturally Serious tinted sunscreen is also worth a look.
Body sunscreens: For body, I love Juice Beauty because it's silicone-free, but you can also get good protection from Supergoop! and Shiseido.
Powder sunscreens: I wouldn't use powder sunscreen as your only sunscreen—rather, I suggest keeping it in your handbag as a top-up. It goes on right over your makeup, and you'll never be without SPF! The best ones are from Supergoop!, ILIA, Peter Thomas Roth and Tarte.
Editor’s Picks: Skincare Treatments
Vitamin C: The most potent form of vitamin C is L-ascorbic acid, which you can find in Drunk Elephant's cult favourite serum. Personally, I prefer vitamin C derivatives, which have a longer shelf life. You can find them from Omorovicza, Summer Fridays, Kora Organics, Youth to the People, Skin Inc Supplement Bar, Tatcha and Farmacy.
Retinol: The strongest retinoid in the store is from Drunk Elephant, which has a full one percent retinol. There's also Alpha-H and Glow Recipe (although they don't disclose the concentration). If you're super sensitive, The Inkey List is the mildest option.
Niacinamide: There's one active ingredient that treats a wide range of skincare concerns and is well tolerated by everyone: niacinamide. Find it in the serums from The Inkey List, Alpha-H and Skin Inc Supplement Bar.
Copper peptides: Believe it or not, copper peptides are on par with retinoids for treating the signs of aging. You can find them in the new serum from Dr Roebuck's.
Bakuchiol: Another exciting retinoid alternative is bakuchiol, available in serums from Herbivore and The Inkey List. One study found that bakuchiol was comparable to a mild retinol for treating wrinkling and pigmentation.
Editor’s Picks: Face Masks and Sheet Masks
Clay masks: The best clay mask is from Indie Lee—it's a lifesaver whenever your skin is broken out, irritated or just in need of a pick-me-up. I've also got my eye on the one from Omorovicza.
Exfoliating masks: My top pick for brightening is the BHA-based Tata Harper mask. However, Herbivore (both Blue Tansy and Brighten) and Omorovicza also get the job done well. Or, try the new Ole Henriksen mask with PHAs, which are like AHAs but milder.
Hydrating masks: I love the jelly-like Dr Roebuck's mask for non-greasy hydration. If you prefer a creamier texture, go for Naturally Serious or Lano.
Sheet masks: Of all the sheet masks I've tried over the years, I still love SK-II's the best. However, I'd also try Go-To, which has better ingredients than most.
Editor’s Picks: High Tech Tools
Cleansing brushes: I swear by the Foreo cleansing brush for getting your skin super soft and clean without irritation. (And it won't harbour nasty bacteria.) PMD makes a device that sounds very similar, although I haven't tried it yet.
Microneedling: It's safe to do microneedling at home, as long as you choose a device with shallow needles (less than 0.3 mm) and follow the instructions to keep it clean. I have the BeautyBio gadget myself, but there's also StackedSkincare and Nurse Jamie.
Microcurrent: Another tool that really works is microcurrent. It's totally painless and if you do it consistently, it can actually tighten and firm your skin. I own the NuFace and the ReFa, and now I've got my eye on the NuFace body version to target cellulite!
Light therapy: I'm always talking about the benefits of red light therapy, and while I generally recommend more powerful devices, I think the LightStim is handy for travel. I'm also intrigued by the Dr. Dennis Gross face mask, since it's hands-free. For occasional breakouts, the Foreo blue light tool zaps bacteria in 30 seconds.
Ice roller: How good does this sound? Pop the StackedSkincare ice roller in your freezer, and once it's cold, roll it across your face for an instant calming effect.
Pore extractor: Dermaflash uses sonic vibrations to deep-clean pores and then infuse them with your favourite serum.
Lip plumper: If you're like me and would rather avoid lip fillers, the PMD plumping gadget is great for a temporarily fuller effect.
Face rollers: Jillian Dempsey has the most luxe face massager, but you can also find versions from Mount Lai, Herbivore and Nurse Jamie.
Editor’s Picks: Skin Makeup
Primers: Silicone-free primers used to be impossible to find, but not anymore. REN and ILIA both make primer-serum hybrids that help makeup last longer while hydrating your skin.
Tinted moisturizers: For lightweight and silicone-free coverage, I like the tinted moisturizers from Omorovicza, bareMinerals and Juice Beauty.
Foundations: My everyday makeup is the cult classic RMS Beauty concealer and foundation in one, just sheered out with my fingers or a brush. But now there's a new RMS Beauty foundation formula for those who prefer fuller coverage and a more traditional cream texture. Another option is the Guerlain silicone-free foundation (although it is fragranced). The Kosas foundation broke me out badly, but if you are not sensitive to oils, it may be worth a shot!
Concealers: For a clean concealer, I always use RMS Beauty, but I'm going to invest in ILIA this time and see how that goes! (It's also silicone-free.) If I need to cover a pimple, Make Up For Ever has been my go-to product for years and years.
Powders: I swear by translucent powders because they tame shine without leaving any texture on your skin. ILIA is my number one pick, but I also like RMS Beauty.
Highlighters: No product is as magical as highlighter for making your skin look healthy and natural. Try RMS Beauty, ILIA or Kora Organics.
Editor’s Picks: Bath & Body
Shower gels: For a sulfate-free cleanse, I recommend the shower gels from Dr Roebuck's, REN and Consonant.
Body scrubs: There are so many great scrubs out right now with natural ingredients. Try the ones from Herbivore (both Coco Rose and Crushed Amethyst), REN and Kopari.
Bath soak: Herbivore's coconut milk soak is addictive (and makes a great gift).
Body moisturizers: I'm extra particular about the ingredients in body moisturizers, since they go on a larger surface area and you're absorbing more product. Dr Roebuck's, Kopari, REN and Lavanila tick off my boxes.
Editor’s Picks: Beauty Supplements
Collagen: I take Vital Proteins every morning, and they honestly do make a difference with your skin, nails and hair. They also have a Marine Collagen version that is equally beneficial.
Vitamin D: I always look for as few ingredients as possible in my supplements, so I'm impressed that HUM Nutrition has only four (D3, olive oil, gelatin, glycerin and water).
Digestive enzymes: In an unexpected move, RMS Beauty sells an enzyme supplement that eases digestion and increases energy and nutrient absorption.
Magnesium: The Moon Juice magnesium powder should help with relaxation and restful sleep (since most of us are deficient).
Milk thistle: Dark circles are notoriously hard to treat, but the HUM Nutrition supplement is worth trying. It has milk thistle, dandelion root and artichoke leaf to support liver health, and the reviews are super positive.
Editor’s Picks: Gift Sets
Skincare gift sets: A gift set is the best way to try out a luxury skincare line, without having to buy full sizes of all the products. That's why I think the sets from Dr. Barbara Sturm and Omorovicza are the most worthy investments this year. Also check out the kits from Drunk Elephant, Caudalie and The Inkey List.
High tech tools gift sets: If you're thinking about investing in a microneedling or microcurrent tool, you'll get great value with the sets from BeautyBio and NuFace.
Makeup gift sets: If you love clean makeup, the best sets are from RMS Beauty for luminizers, Kosas for eyeshadows and Bite Beauty for lipsticks.
Body gift sets: Herbivore and Kopari have you covered with pampering sets for the body.

Youthful Skin
I’m nearing the end of my 20s and like many others I have started to ask myself, do I really need a skin care regimen? I started to use makeup regularly when I hit 20, so I got to thinking... “that’s a decade of wearing makeup, that can’t be good for my skin.” In fact, if I think back at how my skin used to feel and look before makeup, it was a lot less maintenance.
I almost never had a pimple and I looked years younger than my age. At first, I just started wearing eyeliner, then after a year it was eyeliner and lip gloss, then it became eyeliner, lipgloss, and concealer. If I had stopped there, I think I would have been better off. But now, I own mascara, primers, a couple eyeshadow pallets, blush, and lipsticks. I know, that probably doesn’t sound like much compared to the average Beauty Insider, but it’s a lot for someone like me that goes for the no-makeup makeup look 99% of the time.
Even worse, after becoming a Beauty Insider at Sephora, I really started to drink the kool aid. The sales reps would tell me how if I’m wearing concealer, I definitely need to be protecting and hydrating my under eyes with an eye cream or eye serum. Probably true, right? Then they convinced me that I should be wearing facial sunscreen and moisturizer everyday to protect my skin from the sun. Duh! I began to think that I had been doing my skin a disfavor all these years! So I hopped on the web regularly to find the best of the best skincare products. Only after a few months, I had put together an entire skin care routine that consisted of cleanser, toner, essence, eye gel, moisturizer, sunscreen, face mist, you name it!
How did it come to this? Well, I could blame those awful marketing strategists that intentionally mislead consumers into thinking you need all these products, but that would be irresponsible. Truth is, I was very naive. I did not read the labels and I did not do my own research about how these chemicals could affect my skin, cells, organs, or overall health in the long run. I just blindly relied on the “beauty experts” aka sales associate to tell me what I needed.
After some cosmetic fasting and a lot of reading, I can honestly say, I’m in a better place now. Beautiful youthful skin? I believe that healthy skin begins from within. Your skin is reactionary, as it should be. Just like every other organ in your body, it acts out to get your attention. If you get a couple pimples, your first instinct might be Sephora! But in reality it should be, reflection. What could be the cause? Am I emotionally strained or stressed by my work? Or is it a hormonal imbalance from a lack of nutrition or sleep?
No amount of makeup or skin care is going to help you heal internally. Start from within by feeding your body the right nutrients and eliminating factors that could be negatively affecting you or your mood. Do more things that make you happy and rid your body and your environment of as much toxic chemicals as possible. It took me time to make this change and I’m still on the path of learning how to live cleaner and healthier, but if I can do it, you can too.

REN Perfect Canvas Clean Primer is one of the only silicone-free primers on the market—perfect for controlling shine, blurring pores and improving the longevity of your makeup without aggravating acne and dryness. Reviewed: The Best (and Worst) Skincare Products from Indie Lee
This article may contain affiliate links. See our Disclosure for more information.
Clean beauty has gone mainstream, and Indie Lee is one of the brands leading the way.
The decade-old skincare range not only uses natural ingredients, but makes some of the most unique and elegant products I've tried—like Squalane Facial Oil, which singlehandedly kicked off the squalane oil trend.

Thanks for watching!
And with chic packaging that looks right at home alongside Chanel and La Mer, it is one of the first clean lines with "mass" appeal (whether or not you care about what's inside).
Recently, the brand released an array of new products and revamped some of its older formulas, to coincide with its arrival at Nordstrom and Sephora. So if you're wondering what's worth buying, I can help!
Just like my brand reviews for Drunk Elephant and The Ordinary, I've created a guide to the ENTIRE Indie Lee line, based on my analysis of the ingredients lists and my personal experience testing the collection.
But before we take a closer look at the products, let's get to know Indie Lee herself!

Indie Lee Background
Tumblr media
Indie Lee, founder of Indie Lee
The first thing you need to know is that Indie Lee is not just a brand but a person—and she was inspired to create her own natural skincare products after being diagnosed with a rare brain tumour in 2008.
Doctors said she might have as little as six months to live, and that the trigger was likely environmental, which (to her alarm) could include what she'd been using on her skin.
Against the odds, Indie survived a successful surgery to remove the tumour, and then embarked on a new mission: to launch Indie Lee (the brand), and to educate others that what you put ON your body is just as important as what you put IN it.
You can read more about Indie's story in my interview with her here.
In terms of ingredients, the brand's philosophy is "when in doubt, formulate out." So you won't see anything like:
Formaldehyde
Mineral oil
Parabens
Petrolatum
Siloxane
Sulfates
Synthetic fragrance
Talc
The products are also cruelty-free, made in the USA and France, and packaged in glass bottles and jars wherever possible.
Now, let's dive into the pros and cons of each one (and I'll update this list as new launches arrive!).
Indie Lee Review
Tumblr media
The Indie Lee skincare range
Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser
Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser is a gel cleanser.
Sulfate-free, and cleans with gentle surfactants like decyl glucoside and coco glucoside.
Has a gel texture that produces a light foam—a little goes a long way!
Strawberry seed oil gives it a natural fruity scent.
Very effective at both removing makeup and cleaning the skin. So if you don't have time to double cleanse, this would be an excellent product to do it all in one step.
Can also be applied to a wet cotton pad and used as an eye makeup remover (if you're wearing more stubborn waterproof formulas).
For a gentle exfoliation, you can leave it on as a mask for five minutes before rinsing off.
Suitable for all skin, and is one of the gentlest, non-drying gel cleansers I've found. (In fact, it's one of my all-time favourite cleansers, period!)
However, I would not expect major brightening benefits from any cleanser, since it's only on your skin for a few moments before being removed. Leave-on acids, vitamin C and niacinamide are more effective ways to brighten.
Due to the small amount of strawberry seed oil, I would recommend using this up within six months (before it oxidizes).
Indie Lee Rosehip Cleanser
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Rosehip Cleanser
Indie Lee Rosehip Cleanser is a jelly cleanser.
Sulfate-free, and cleans with a coconut-based surfactant (potassium cocoate).
Has a unique jelly texture that produces a nourishing lather. Again, you don't need a lot of product.
Glycerin, seaweed extract and rosehip oil help moisturize your skin.
Fragranced more strongly than the brand's other cleansers (fragrance is the fourth ingredient). Although we aren't privy to the exact concentration, and it is naturally derived, this seems high in a cleanser.
Works well at cleaning the skin, but I find it's not quite as effective as the Brightening Cleanser at removing makeup. You'll likely want to use a separate makeup remover first.
Can also be applied to a wet cotton pad and used as an eye makeup remover.
Upon rinsing off, this cleanser seems to leave a slight film on your skin, which may help to seal in moisture. Fortunately, I've found this sensation goes away once your skin is dry, and it doesn't cause any breakouts for me, even though I am acne-prone.
Suitable for normal, dry and sensitive skin. However, some users have complained that it is more drying than the previous formula, perhaps due to the higher fragrance content. (For the record, I didn't experience this.)
Oilier types will probably prefer the Brightening Cleanser or Purifying Face Wash.
Due to the small amount of rosehip seed oil, I would recommend using this up within six months (before it oxidizes).
Indie Lee Purifying Face Wash
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Purifying Face Wash
Indie Lee Purifying Face Wash is a foaming gel cleanser.
Sulfate-free, and cleans with four different plant-based surfactants.
Has a gel texture that transforms into a deep-cleansing foam. You only need a small amount to produce a good lather.
The "purifying" ingredients are the plum, orange and lavender extracts, which are said to dissolve excess sebum.
Although the scent is subtle, this actually contains a number of botanicals, including orange, rose, vanilla, lemon, clove and lavender extracts.
Like the Brightening Cleanser, it is very effective at both removing makeup and cleaning the skin in one step.
Suitable for normal, oily and combination skin, but is much gentler than most foaming cleansers, which can be harsh and stripping. My skin never feels uncomfortable and tight after using this.
If excess oil is a problem, you'll get better results from a leave-on product. Beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) and niacinamide are the best choices to address sebum secretion.
Will not be moisturizing enough for dry skin, and sensitive types could react to the botanical extracts (try the Brightening Cleanser or Rosehip Cleanser instead).
Indie Lee CoQ-10 Toner
Tumblr media
Indie Lee CoQ-10 Toner
Indie Lee CoQ-10 Toner is a hydrating toner.
One of the few toners on the market that is moisturizing, not astringent.
Can also be used as an essence (a hydrator similar to serum, but more fluid). So it is comparable to the hydrating toners and essences from Asian beauty brands.
Alcohol-free, and high aloe vera and hyaluronic acid, which are humectants that draw water into the skin.
Also contains ubiquinone (coenzyme Q10), an antioxidant that is proven to defend skin from UV-induced free radical damage.
Has a slight herbal scent, thanks to the sage and cucumber extracts.
Should be applied after cleansing and before moisturizer. You can either mist it onto a cotton pad and gently wipe your skin (to use it as a toner), or mist it directly over your face and neck, avoiding the eye area (to use it as an essence).
Depending on your skin, you could use it in addition to or instead of serum or moisturizer. Just make sure to seal in the moisture with something more occlusive, like a few drops of Squalane Facial Oil.
Unfortunately, it does not play well with acid treatments. I've found that if I use this underneath any alpha- or beta-hydroxy acids, I get a red, flushing reaction that takes a few hours to go down. So I recommend using it at a different time of day, away from AHAs and BHAs.
You can also apply it like you would a face mist, to refresh your skin (especially after exercise or during travel).
Suitable for all skin except sensitive, due to the botanical extracts.
Indie Lee Gentle Daily Peel
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Gentle Daily Peel
Indie Lee Gentle Daily Peel is a set of AHA and BHA exfoliating pads.
Contains salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid, and caviar lime extract, a natural source of alpha-hydroxy acids (mainly citric acid).
Salicylic acid is the more proven acid ingredient, and helps with exfoliating, deep-cleaning pores, clearing acne and brightening. More on salicylic acid benefits here.
Unfortunately, the brand does not disclose the percentage of acid, nor the pH—all we know is that the pads are gentle enough for most people to use daily.
High in alcohol denat (it's the second ingredient). Alcohol can be useful as a penetration enhancer, to help other ingredients get into the skin, but can be quite drying. However, the propanediol and glycerin may offset some of this effect.
Also high in witch hazel, an astringent ingredient that can be irritating for some skin. (Including mine—look at what happened to me after using another product with witch hazel high in the ingredients list!)
These may be worth a try if you have normal, non-reactive skin and are seeking mild exfoliation and a natural formula. But I would be cautious if you are sensitive (even though the brand claims that sensitive types can use these as often as three times per week).
Due to the unknown acid concentration and potential irritants, I'll be sticking with treatments like the COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid (reviewed here) instead. Although my hunch is that Indie Lee's is on the weaker side, acids can be tricky to use, so I'm more comfortable when I know exactly how much of them I'm getting—natural or not. The COSRX formula is also free of alcohol, witch hazel and fragrance.
Indie Lee Radiance Renewal Peel
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Radiance Renewal Peel
Indie Lee Radiance Renewal Peel is a set of AHA exfoliating pads.
Exfoliates with caviar lime extract, which is high in citric acid (an alpha-hydroxy acid).
As citric acid is a weaker AHA than glycolic or lactic acid, I would expect only mild brightening and exfoliating benefits.
The propanediol and glycerin make this formula hydrating, and unlike the Gentle Daily Peel, it does not contain alcohol denat or witch hazel.
Suitable for all skin, although sensitive skin should only use this two or three times per week instead of daily (probably due to the fruit extracts).
Still, it is one of the gentlest exfoliating options I've seen, and could be worth a try if you have trouble tolerating stronger acids. (Another one to check out is ClarityRx Brighten It 10% Lactic Acid Solution, which contains just lactic acid and water.)
Indie Lee Stem Cell Serum
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Stem Cell Serum
Indie Lee Stem Cell Serum is a hydrating serum.
High in glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which are humectants.
Also contains stem cells derived from Echinacea, which this study suggests may have anti-aging effects.
Apple, bamboo and Alpine rose extracts have extra skin-conditioning and antioxidant properties. (But keep in mind that vitamin C is a much more powerful, proven antioxidant.)
Has a lightweight texture and absorbs quickly with no stickiness.
Can be worn alone or underneath creams, oils or sunscreens. Or you can mix it with a face oil like the Squalane Facial Oil.
Suitable for all skin, and is unlikely to cause irritation or breakouts. This is one of my favourite serums!
However, I would not expect major results in terms of treating wrinkles or loss of firmness. For those concerns, retinol is the gold standard topical ingredient. Shani Darden Retinol Reform (reviewed here) and A313 Vitamin A Pommade (reviewed here) are my two favourites.
Indie Lee Active Oil-Free Moisturizer
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Active Oil-Free Moisturizer
Indie Lee Active Oil-Free Moisturizer is a lightweight moisturizer.
One of the few oil-free and silicone-free moisturizers on the market.
Hydrates with fatty acids, fatty alcohols, alkanes, lethicin, propanediol and glycerin.
Also contains an array of botanicals, including jasmine, citrus, rose and vanilla extracts, which give it a subtle, natural scent.
Has a light cream texture and conveniently dispenses through a pump.
Feels very hydrating, absorbing well and leaving zero greasy residue on the skin.
Can be worn alone; over a serum or essence (like the Stem Cell Serum or CoQ-10 Toner); or mixed with or underneath a face oil (like the Squalane Facial Oil).
Suitable for all skin, but drier types probably won't find this moisturizing enough on its own. (Try the Daily Skin Nutrition instead.)
Ideal for oily and acne-prone skin—this product never breaks me out or leaves me looking like an oil slick!
Indie Lee Daily Skin Nutrition
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Daily Skin Nutrition
Indie Lee Daily Skin Nutrition is a nourishing moisturizer.
One of the few silicone-free moisturizers on the market. But unlike the Active Oil-Free Moisturizer, it is rich in oils.
Hydrates with a blend of oils (squalane, avocado, coconut, olive and rosehip seed oils), waxes (sorbitan and cetearyl olivate) and hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate).
For brightening and antioxidant protection, it also contains vitamins E and C (ascorbyl palmitate), but the latter is one of the weakest vitamin C derivatives and is very unstable.
Has a cream texture that is lightweight enough to dispense through a pump.
Despite the high oil content, it sinks in fast and doesn't feel oily at all.
Suitable for dry and sensitive skin, but the oils may be comedogenic for those prone to breakouts. Oily and acne-prone skin will probably prefer the Active Oil-Free Moisturizer.
Due to the avocado, olive and rosehip seed oils, I would recommend using this up within six months (before it oxidizes).
Indie Lee Squalane Facial Oil
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Squalane Facial Oil
Indie Lee Squalane Facial Oil is a face oil.
Contains 100 percent pure squalane oil, derived from olives.
Squalane is the stabilized form of squalene, an oil our bodies produce naturally that declines as we age.
Unlike most face oils, it has a long shelf life (since it's highly resistant to oxidation), and is non-comedogenic for most people.
Very effective at healing dry, chapped skin, and also helps to balance excess oil production.
Has a thin, lightweight texture, is colourless and odourless, and doesn't feel greasy. (That's why I call it the face oil for people who hate face oils!)
Can be worn alone; on top of serums and creams; or mixed with serums and creams (like the Stem Cell Serum and Active Oil-Free Moisturizer).
Suitable for all skin. I recommend this oil to everyone!
If you're on a budget, you can find less expensive squalane oils from The Ordinary and Timeless, but Indie Lee's is of higher quality, with better packaging.
Indie Lee Daily Vitamin Infusion
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Daily Vitamin Infusion
Indie Lee Daily Vitamin Infusion is a face oil blend.
Moisturizes with a blend of oils (squalane, rosehip seed, avocado and coconut) and two types of ceramides.
Ceramides are oils that naturally occur in the outer layer of our skin, and are proven to increase skin hydration and maintain the skin barrier.
Like Daily Skin Nutrition, it contains vitamins E and C, but the latter (in the form of ascorbyl palmitate) is fairly weak and unstable.
Has a light oil texture and is fast-absorbing, similar to the Squalane Facial Oil.
Can be worn alone; on top of serums and creams; or mixed with serums and creams (like the Stem Cell Serum and Active Oil-Free Moisturizer). The brand suggests wearing it underneath moisturizer, but creams may not be able to penetrate through the oil barrier (that's why I suggest oil as your last step).
Suitable for dry and sensitive skin, but may be comedogenic for skin prone to breakouts. Oily and acne-prone types are better off with Squalane Facial Oil.
Although the squalane will have a stabilizing effect, due to the high amount of rosehip seed oil, I would recommend using this up within three months (before it oxidizes). So keep in mind that you will need to go through this quickly to make it worth your while.
Indie Lee I-Waken Eye Serum
Tumblr media
Indie Lee I-Waken Eye Serum
Indie Lee I-Waken Eye Serum is an eye serum.
Hydrates with a mix of emollients and humectants: propanediol, glycerin, coconut fatty acids, jojoba oil, squalane and hyaluronic acid.
Targets dark circles and puffiness with mountain ash, horse chestnut and witch hazel extracts.
The arnica, cornflower and chamomile extracts have soothing properties.
Has a thin, non-greasy lotion texture that sinks in fast and is perfect under makeup.
Suitable for all skin, including sensitive. I often experience irritation and crepey skin from eye creams, but not this one.
However, it is not the most nourishing product. If you need more moisture, I would pair it with the Squalane Facial Oil (either mixed in, or layered on top).
Dark circles and puffiness are notoriously difficult to treat with topical products, so I would not expect major changes. Retinol, vitamin C, vitamin K, caffeine and niacinamide are more proven ingredients to try.
Due to the jojoba and sunflower seed oils, I would recommend using this up within six months (before it oxidizes).
Indie Lee Calendula Eye Balm
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Calendula Eye Balm
Indie Lee Calendula Eye Balm is an eye balm.
Contains a blend of oils, butters and waxes: calendula oil, beeswax, mango seed butter, squalane, avocado oil, vitamin E, hydrogenated vegetable oil and sweet almond oil.
As it contains only occlusive and emollient ingredients (no humectants), it won't bring water to the skin, but it will protect, smooth and seal in moisture. If your skin needs more hydration, try wearing it over a serum like the I-Waken Eye Serum.
Has a salve texture that transforms into an oil as you massage it on (all you need is a grain-sized amount).
Can be used on the eye area as well as lips, cuticles and dry patches. Indie herself also uses this to fix eye makeup mistakes.
Suitable for all skin, except skin prone to milia.
Due to the calendula, avocado and almond oils, I would recommend using this up within three months (before it oxidizes). So keep in mind that you will need to go through this quickly to make it worth your while.
Indie Lee Lip Treat
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Lip Treat
Indie Lee Lip Treat is a lip balm.
Moisturizes with oils (castor seed), waxes (candelilla and beeswax) and naturally derived emollients (like hydroxystearic acid).
Also contains pomegranate, milk thistle and rosemary leaf extracts, which have some skin-conditioning and antioxidant properties.
Peppermint oil gives it a subtle minty scent and slight tingle.
Has rich but spreadable texture. Think: lanolin balms like Lanolips 101 Ointment, but more fluid.
Leaves lips with a glossy sheen and a thin coating of balm. It doesn't feel as protective or as long-lasting as lanolin, but sticks to the lips better than petroleum-based balms like Glossier Balm Dotcom. I find I need to re-apply this every couple of hours.
Suitable for all skin, but keep in mind that there are some potential irritants, including the peppermint oil, beeswax, vitamin E. These may cause dryness and chapping for some people, depending on your sensitivity.
For those reasons, I'll be sticking with Lanolips (or the cheaper nipple cream version, Lansinoh!), which I find much more nourishing, healing, protective and long-lasting, with the same glossy finish on the lips.
Due to the sunflower seed oil, I would recommend using this up within six months (before it oxidizes).
Indie Lee Blemish Lotion
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Blemish Lotion
Indie Lee Blemish Lotion is an overnight acne treatment.
A talc-free alternative to the OG drying lotion, Mario Badescu Drying Lotion.
Contains sulfur, salicylic acid and clay, which help to dry out blemishes, absorb excess oil, disinfect pores and reduce inflammation.
Also has zinc oxide and camphor extract, which soothe and calm red, irritated skin.
Isopropyl alcohol acts as a solvent (it is the second ingredient), but shouldn't be too much to worry about, since this is only being used as a spot treatment instead of all over the face.
To apply it, you need to allow the product to settle at the bottom (do not shake). Then, dip a Q-tip into the sediment and dab it onto any blemishes. Leave it on for at least two hours or overnight before rinsing off.
Suitable for pimples, blackheads and enlarged pores. Also worth a try on cystic acne (although it is not its intended use).
A much better choice than benzoyl peroxide spot treatments (which increase oxidative stress and slow down wound healing).
However, it is more effective to prevent acne from developing in the first place by using a beta-hydroxy acid like salicylic acid as often as daily. More on salicylic acid benefits here. Because I use the CORSX BHA every day, my skin stays clear and I never need to use spot treatments like this one.
Indie Lee Banish Stick
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Banish Stick
Indie Lee Banish Stick is an on-the-go acne treatment.
Clear and invisible on the skin, and will not alter makeup application—so it's ideal for treating blemishes during the daytime.
Contains salicylic acid, glycolic acid and zinc sulphate to help dry out pimples, unclog pores and neutralize bacteria.
Also has camphor extract to soothe and calm.
Isopropyl alcohol is the first ingredient, but is acting as a solvent and killing bacteria (which is important, since this has a wand applicator).
Suitable for pimples, blackheads and enlarged pores, and may have a small effect on cystic acne.
Like the Blemish Lotion, it is superior to treatments with benzoyl peroxide, which is an oxidizing agent.
Again, I suggest using this in conjunction with a beta-hydroxy acid (like Juice Beauty Blemish Clearing Serum or First Aid Beauty Acne Clearing Pads), which will be more effective at preventing breakouts before they happen.
Indie Lee Clearing Mask
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Clearing Mask
Indie Lee Clearing Mask is a clay mask.
Contains bentonite clay and sulfur to pull gunk out of the pores and clear breakouts.
Also has glycolic and salicylic acids to help to remove dead skin cells and smooth the skin surface.
Zinc oxide, camphor, seaweed and chamomile extract are soothing and calming, while propanediol and hyaluronic acid deliver hydration.
Has a thick but easy-to-spread texture and does not dry out in the jar.
Should be applied in a thin layer to damp skin and left on for 20 minutes before rinsing off. Can be used weekly.
Suitable for all skin except sensitive (due to the acids and limonene). It's one of my favourite masks, and one of the few clay masks that I don't find drying.
If breakouts are a real concern, I suggest pairing this with a daily beta-hydroxy acid treatment, which will be more effective at clearing.
Indie Lee Energize Body Wash
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Energize Body Wash
Indie Lee Energize Body Wash is a body wash.
Sulfate-free, and cleans with gentle coconut-based surfactants.
Glycerin, quinoa and panthenol help to soften and moisturize the skin.
Has a fresh, invigorating scent thanks to orange, bergamot, eucalyptus, grapefruit and rosemary oils.
A good choice if you're looking for a mild, sulfate-free body wash.
Indie Lee Coconut Citrus Scrub
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Coconut Citrus Scrub
Indie Lee Coconut Citrus Scrub is a body scrub.
Exfoliates dead skin with raw cane sugar.
Coconut and jojoba oils moisturize dry areas—in fact, I often skip body lotion after I use this.
Scented with natural lemon balm, lemongrass and vanilla.
To use, massage a small amount in circular motions over dry or damp skin, and then rinse off.
Can be used on the body as well as lips, and also works well a pre-shaving treatment. It's my all-time favourite scrub!
Due to the jojoba oil, I would recommend using this up within six months (before it oxidizes).
Indie Lee I-Recover Body Soak
Tumblr media
Indie Lee I-Recover Body Soak
Indie Lee I-Recover Body Soak is a bath soak and body scrub.
Soothes sore muscles and relaxes you with Epsom, Dead Sea and Himalayan salts, along with arnica extract.
Coconut fatty acids, coconut oil and hydrogenated rapeseed oil deliver hydration.
Natural rosemary, black pepper, eucalyptus, lavender, patchouli and sage give it a unique, aromatherapeutic scent.
To use it as a soak, dissolve two scoops in warm water. Or you can use it as a scrub, by massaging a small amount on dry or damp skin. Just be aware that the ingredients can separate in the jar, so you'll need to stir it up first.
Due to the sunflower seed and sweet almond oils, I would recommend using this up within six months (before it oxidizes).
Indie Lee I-Recover Mind & Body Gel
Tumblr media
Indie Lee I-Recover Mind and Body Gel
Indie Lee I-Recover Mind & Body Gel is a body gel.
Designed to soothe over-worked muscles and promote relaxation.
Delivers a warm-cool sensation, thanks to the menthol and black pepper.
Hydrates with fatty acids and alcohols, propanediol and sweet almond oil.
Lightly scented with eucalpytus, lavender, patchouli and sage.
Can be massaged into muscles and joints both before and after a workout. Also helpful for legs and ankles when flying. For instant relaxation, apply it to the back of your neck.
Has a fast-absorbing, non-greasy gel texture.
Due to the sweet almond and sunflower seed oils, I would recommend using this up within six months (before it oxidizes).
Indie Lee Essential Body Lotion
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Essential Body Lotion
Indie Lee Essential Body Lotion is a body lotion.
Hydrates with a blend of emollients, occlusives and humectants (including coconut fatty acids, safflower seed oil, glycerin, fatty alcohols, cocoa butter, shea butter and aloe vera).
Has a super light scent, from the lavender extract and citrus oils.
The texture is a light lotion, and it moisturizes well without leaving you greasy or slippery.
Although the squalane will have a stabilizing effect, due to the high amount of safflower seed oil, I would recommend using this up within a month or two (before it oxidizes). So keep in mind that you will need to go through this quickly to make it worth your while.
I would recommend the body moisturizers from Dr Roebuck's and REN instead, as they are made with more stable ingredients.
Indie Lee Whipped Body Butter
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Whipped Body Butter
Indie Lee Whipped Body Butter is a body butter.
Moisturizes with a blend of oils and butters, including safflower seed oil, castor seed oil, shea butter, coconut oil, argan oil, marula oil, moringa oil and jojoba oil.
Also includes glycerin, propanediol, fatty alcohols and aloe vera for even more hydration.
Scented with mandarin and bergamot oils.
Has a whipped, creamy texture and sinks in easily.
Due to the high amount of safflower seed oil, I would not recommend this body butter—it will oxidize too quickly, and you'd be absorbing too much of it over your body (as opposed to facial products, where you're only exposed to a small amount). Lavanila's Healthy Body Butter is a safer, more stable option.
Indie Lee Energize Body Oil
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Energize Body Oil
Indie Lee Energize Body Oil is a body oil.
Rather than oils, it is actually higher in coconut fatty acids, coconut alkanes and heptyl undecylenate (the latter two are naturally derived silicone alternatives).
Also contains castor seed, jojoba, grape seed, marula, sunflower seed and coconut oils.
Like the Energize Body Wash, it has an uplifting scent from the orange, bergamot, eucalyptus, grapefruit and rosemary oils.
Easy to apply, thanks to the convenient spray dispenser.
Due to the coconut alkanes, I don't recommend this body oil. Alkanes are hydrocarbons (similar to petroleum), which accumulate in fat tissue and cannot be metabolized. I'm more comfortable using them in facial products (where you're only exposed to tiny amounts), rather than the large quantities you'd absorb from a body product.
If you do try it, due to the castor seed, jojoba, grape seed, marula and sunflower seed oils, I would recommend using this up within six months (before it oxidizes).
Conclusion
I hope this guide has helped you navigate the Indie Lee skincare line!
As someone who loves clean ingredients, chic packaging and lightweight formulas, I'm a HUGE fan. (Honestly, I think I own more Indie Lee products than any other skincare brand!) I really appreciate that this range isn't divided by skin "types," but instead lets you mix and match products depending on your skin's needs.
Where it falls short, in my opinion, is with active ingredients. As much as I love the Stem Cell Serum for hydration, it's not an anti-ager like retinol, vitamin C or niacinamide. And I think other brands have better AHA and BHA treatments, without potential irritants. I also think they could tweak a few of the formulas to improve the stability and shelf life.
To sum up, here are my top picks—let me know if you agree!
