Last days
Since you've last heard, I've been to the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort in Agra, as well as travelled around Jaipur. Jaipur is colloquially known as "the pink city," dubbed after it's old city painted all pink. It's really more of a red-ish sandstone color, but part of the must-sees in India. In Agra, we stayed at a nice homestay pretty close to the Taj. A homestay is basically a little guest house in an Indian home that's rented out as sleeping space. Sometimes it comes with breakfeast and often has an option for home cooked food. In Agra we had some A/C problems and he dropped the price for our room to $20 a night, solid price for each person to pay half. The next day we got an early start to hit the Taj for sunrise. We got there and had a beautiful view of the sun glinting off of the stones inlaid on the beautiful mosoleum. We took a tour with a guide and walked around a little bit. It was a cool place to visit and I'm happy I was able to see another one of the wonders of yhe world. After the Taj we ate some south Indian food and bounced on a bus to Jaipur. Our first night in Jaipur was a highlight of the trip. We went to get $17 hour long massages with special Indian Ayurveda oils before going to see the latest Bollywood hit: Badrina ki Dulhania. The cinema experience here is super different from anything I've seen before and was absolutely fascinating. Basically how it works here is... there are five or six big male and female actresses and people only go to the movies to see their favorites. The plots don't have to be a pull, and they can pretty much be about anything, as long as your guy is in it, your there. They're interspersed with High School Music like dancing and singing sequences with everyone in full on garb and accompanied by hundreds of back up dancers. When the scene hits, the crowd cheers, when a joke is told, you must laugh, when it's sad, you're crying. It's much more of an interactive experience than I've known: mostly people telling you to shut up if you even whisper to a friend. Here you have people talking the whole movie, shouting at the screen, and hooting at every chance they get. Highly recommended. We checked in to another home stay in Jaipur for even cheaper, just $4 per person for a night! The next day we had some bfast, and it was time to hit the city, knowing we didn't have much time left. First thing we went to the Hawa Mahal - Winter Palace, where, in winter, the king would host festivals with singing, dancing, food, and drink. It is designed in the form if a krishna crown, pyramidic in shape. We had a guide give us some background there, as well as the observatory of Jaipur. What was interesting about the observatory, and at first hard to understand, was how all of the instruments were not only scientific, but also religious. Each object had it's own purpose of keeping track of astrological values and signs to be interpreted accordingly. From there we went to the City Palace, which had beautiful displays of historic garb, weaponry, and the largest silver jugs in the entire world! It was magnificent to see some of these historic sites and have a peak into the past of Jaipur. For a final shibang we went to see one of the biggest forts in India: Amar Fort. On the outskirts of Jaipur, Amar Fort has a beautiful view of the city and surrounding mountainous terrain. The palace has multiple courtyards, rooms, staircases and halls that we couldn't place simply. We mostly just wished we had nerf guns whilst inside to lend for a gnarly game of hide and go shoot. After getting lost among some of the latrines and lookout points we made our way down to the main courtyard full of locals celebrating the festival of the local god: Shilla. It was cool to see everything in swing, with free ice cream, rice and more given out to all who were hungry. On our way down to the city we picked out a super local restaurant and stopped for some cheap very traditional Indian food. It was great having hardly anyone understand us and looking around to see only people multiple skin tones darker than us. Made the food that much better. Post a fat dinner, we went to a rock themed bar, where, after already ordering, were surprised to hear it was buy one get one drink free! We put back a couple of Mojitos jamming out to karoke, nothing too local, and bounced to catch our overnight bus to Delhi. We were stoked to check out the fancy sleeper cars we ordered in the overnight bus, enough room for two to bounce around with all the sharp turns and stops of Indian roadplay. Upon arrival after a shaky sleep, we dropped our bags off at the airport and went to take revenge against Delhi, already having been in and around India for almost two weeks, we felt we could handle our own. We grabbed high tea in a more affluent section of town to start the day off right. From there we had an interesting time learning a little about Bahaism at the Bahai Temple in New Delhi. It sounded somewhat interesting but moreso like a formalistically loaded overspluralistic and universalist religion. From there we hopped on over to the Amsikhar temple, which is rumored to have been a super cool attraction, though, when we arrived we were dissapointed. It's a modern day built temple/amuesment park dedicated to guru that I didn't really see the hype about. However, it was cool to see the traditional carving techniques played out in modern times. The temple was carved out of sandstone and was complete with thousands of different manifestations of Hindu dieties, animals and designs. We were pretty bummed about the chunk of time we felt was sort of wasted going through the trouble of going there so we headed out to cheer ourselves up with what are suppossed to be some of the best Lassis in Delhi. By the time we got to Amritsari Lassi we were all ready for a nice refreshment. They had more variety than I'd expected and we ordered a couple of different flavors and passed them around. We took off to the spice market right after that, which happened to be close by. It wasn't too crazy, nothing more than a spice shuk you might see in Israel or another part of the world, however, it did have a unique smell to it. After we were done there we basically made off to a dinner in the city center before we went back to the airport and said goodbye to Delhi and India. For now at least. More pics to come, Bloaz
