Brahmatal Trek Experience with GoAdven

This is my first post on Brahmatal trek experience with GoAdven.  This trek journey is dedicated to all the enthusiastic people who are willing to experience the lush green meadows, beauty and aroma of dense rhododendron forest and mesmerizing view of Himalayan ranges at its best. As I am a trek enthusiastic and I have decided to trek with GoAdven one of the Best Trekking Company in Uttarakhand.

I want you to know that any one can sign up for a high-altitude trek and that the most important thing that needs a work out- is our state of mind and positivity.

Once we channel that optimism, everything else before and after the journey will fall into place and re-energize our very soul.

So get rid of the misconception that high-altitude treks are only for the pros, because this was my and my trek mates first Himalayan trek.

Now before I start, here is a brief introduction of Brahmatal, it’s a lake situated in mountain ranges of Uttarakhand Himalayas. Which is at an altitude of 12,100 ft from mean sea level approximately 24 km from the Lohajung Base camp. Brahmatal summit is at an altitude of 12,500 ft from mean sea level approximately 27 km from the Lohajung Base camp.

It was 14th September 2019, I boarded my flight to Delhi from Mumbai, so my trek mates who had reached Mumbai from Solapur along with my Senior Colleague also boarded a different flight from Mumbai to Delhi. We met in Delhi Cant Train Station to catch our train to Kathgodam. Delhi weather was very hot however our overnight journey brought us to a very cool and pleasant weather at Kathgodam.

Day 1- Kathgodam – Lohajung

We were in Kathgodam to start our unforgettable journey of 5 days to the abode of Gods. We were doing the trek with a trekking organization called ‘GoAdven’. We were picked up from Kathgodam railway station in a tempo traveller which was waiting for us and we started or to Lohajung the base camp. The road journey from Kathgodam to Lohajung exposed us to the beauty of Uttarakhand.

The view was breathtaking. We crossed Bhimtal lake, Almora, Kausani and Dhewal to reach Lohajung. This journey was long almost 12 hours including pit stops for breakfast, lunch and evening tea. We reached Lohajung around 6.00PM. We were welcomed by base camp coordinators Dinesh sir and Pradeep sir. Later were served hot dinner after a small briefing.

We were asked to assemble after dinner for going over the itinerary. During this assembling, we were formally introduced to our Trek Leader Pradeep. He started with the team introduction and briefed us on various aspects of the trek like trek itinerary, etiquettes, medical tips, green trail, do’s and don’ts during our trek etc.

After this, we went to our respective rooms and got under the blankets, thinking and fascinating about the upcoming journey. A small intro about the base camp village, “Lohajung, as the locals say, is the place where Goddess Parvati had a war (jung) with the demon, Lohasur. Hence, the name, which translates to war with Lohasur.” Interesting indeed.

Day 2- Lohajung – Bekaltal

Next day morning everyone was awake by 6.00 AM and were excited to the core and was ready to take a giant leap of faith and overcome the thought of dubiousness of reaching the summit. Pradeep sir introduced us to our Trek Guide Manoj.

Pradeep sir was supposed to lead us and Manoj ji played the role of a sweeper (the last man in the group) to make sure no one is left behind but he joined us a bit later along with the cook Prakash and the mules that were carrying our offload bags. Pradeep sir was constantly motivating us to move ahead. We had to cover a distance of 6 km to reach Bekaltal, our next camp.

We started our trek, a climb through the village to reach our next camp. Through we travelled along the track the view was sufficiently beautiful to keep me going. I got so excited that I forgot about my tiredness completely, and thus we reached the Bekaltal camp. I was exhausted, but I was ecstatic for surviving my very first day of trekking.

Everyone was tired after a long trek of 6 hours. We did some stretching exercise to be relived of muscle pains and after that were served lunch at 2PM and had a small nap till 5 PM. In the evening we were served tea and snacks and went to visit the Bekaltal Lake which was located 500m away from our camp. We had our dinner at 8PM and then everyone retired to their tents.

This was our first night in meadows and it was terribly cold, thanks to our trek organizers they had made proper arrangement and were equipped with tents and sleeping bags of superior quality that could withstand -5 degree temperature.

But since it was our first time it was a bit difficult to tuck ourselves inside the bag although our trek leader had given us a demo on “how to use the sleeping bag”. We could hardly sleep on our first day. This was something beyond our regular lives. But in mountains 4 hours of sleep is more than sufficient to rejuvenate ourselves.

Day 3- Bekaltal – Brahmatal

By the second morning, we woke up at around 6 in the morning; we could see the sun rays entering to our tents. I had gained enough energy and was feeling ready for the day’s trek. The surroundings were sublime and I started thinking that the trek was the best thing of all artificial means of entertainment. Mobile network were getting on and off and whenever we got a chance to speak to our home we did speak to them.

Our trek leaders kept us engaged by narrating inspiring but relevant anecdotes so as to keep us going without thinking about what lay ahead. Crossing the splendid views of mountains and valleys all immersed in fog, we finally managed to reach our stunning basecamp in Brahmatal. I took a stroll around the campsite. The atmosphere was wonderful. And the source of drinking water was the mountain water.

After having some tea in the evening we visited Brahmatal Lake which was around 10 min walk from the camp site and the mesmerizing view of still lake was breathtaking. There is also a small temple made of mountain rocks dedicated to Lord Brahma.

Day 4- Bramhatal – Bramhatal summit – Forest Base camp

This was the day of the summit. We started our summit walk at 6:40 Am. There was so much excitement in my head. This was going to be our last great ascent in the entire trekking itinerary and all my trek mates really wanted to reach the summit as soon as possible.

Fortunately on this day, the beauty of the route was enough to keep us going. Although the ascent was really tough some times, the trek was a steep climb; the last 1 kilometer was a bit difficult compared to the entire past days trek route.

It was going to be an impeccable journey which was going to leave an indelible impression on us and we had realized that if we were mentally prepared for it, we will achieve it and we did it. We reached the summit by 10:30AM.

The sense of achievement had surpassed the feeling of happiness by a mile. And here all of us, clicking celebratory pictures with our group and making merry quietly in our hearts because this was one moment everyone in my group wanted to cherish forever.

We stayed there for around 2 hr. and started our decent towards our last camp site and the decent was comparatively relaxing to our heart but our knees were getting the pressure.

Day 5: Forest Base camp – Lohajung

Today we descend down to our base camp Lohajung which was a 4 km trail. We started early morning and almost ran through the straight trails. Since it was mostly downhill, the knees were punished. But the thick forest and huge trees were pleasant for eyes.

Everyone was more than helpful to everyone else and there was no envy, no pride involved. The concept of team building that I learned here. Finally, after continuously descending for half a day, I got a whiff of the basecamp from where we originally started the trek.

Even though there was still over an hour to the destination, just a sight of it was comforting enough to bring a sigh of relief. And in no time we were at the basecamp. I had never been happier at having achieved something in my uneventful life than I was at Lohajung that afternoon. My first Himalayan trek was a success. Later at 2:PM Our organizers arranged for a transport from Lohajung to Kausani.

Note:Brahmatal is one of India’s few high-altitude treks accessible in the winter months. I have to say with all my heart, that I had a brilliant experience with The GoAdven Team. As a traveler, I like to honestly review and recommend companies I’ve had a good time with. As a first time trekker, I had the best possible introduction to high altitude trekking with their team. Mr. Pradeep Kuniyal and all their other crew members ensured that we had a blast up in the mountains.   This blog post is about my experience of staying at Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam Ltd Hotels during our Bloggers Bus journey with Uttarakhand Tourism

During my travels, I have stayed in all kind of hotels, guest houses, luxury resorts, and even campsite, but I rarely write about the hotels I stay as mostly my focus is on the destination & experience. I have actually said no to many a hotel FAM trips as it just meant staying in the hotel and writing about it. While I am always keen to explore around also and experience the place, interact with people and maybe chat with friends whom I have never met so far. Anyways enough of my quirks, let me share my experience of staying at Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam Ltd Hotels or Tourist Rest Houses as they are called.

What is Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam Limited?

In order to promote tourism and related activities in Kumaon and Garhwal regions, the government formed two organizations Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam & Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam Ltd. The aim of these bodies is to develop sustainable tourism activities in the area. Kumaon Mandal or KMVNL as it is commonly called is responsible for developing tourism infrastructure in the Kumaon region. The KVMNL operates tourist rest houses in all major tourist attractions in Kumaon. Besides owning & operating tourist rest house KMVNL is also engaged in organizing treks to in Kumaon to different places of interest like Pindari Glacier and even facilitating, the revered Kailash Mansarovar Yatra for pilgrims.

As part of there offerings, the KMVNL owns and operates Tourist rest houses in various parts of Kumaon. This blog post is about my experience of staying in these properties and the reasons to stay in Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam Ltd hotels.

So here are my top 7 reasons to stay at Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam Ltd Hotels

Location Location Location :  

Room with a view: Naukuchiatal Kumaon Mandal Hotel is more like a colonial bungalow

 A major reason for me to chose a hotel is a location more so when you are in the Himalayas and want the best possible view of the snowcapped peaks or the pristine Deodar or Rhodendron forests around you. Here KMVNL scores top marks and most of the properties we stayed had the best possible view in the place. But if you ask my favorites I will give you not one but 3 as late Lord Harold Samuel, a real estate tycoon in Britain, coined the expression: ‘There are three things that matter in property: location, location, location.’  So my favorite 3 locations in no particular order were KMVN Ltd rest house in Naukuchiatal, the resort in Chaukori and the hotel in Kausani. In Naukuchiatal we were right at the lakefront and I could see the lake while sitting in the balcony of my room. We could see many birds chirping around as we strolled around the hotel grounds. In Kausani, right from my hotel room, we could see some of the highest peaks in the Kumaon Himalayas right from Nanda Devi, Trishul,  etc, as we watched clouds playing hide and seek with these peaks in the range of 20,000 feet height. In Chaukori the view was even close and had a feeling you could actually touch the peaks

Room Size & Amenities:

I could only get about 1/4 of the room in my mobile camera such is the size of rooms at Naukuchiatal Kuman Mandal Hotel

Not only the KMVN hotels are situated at the best possible location at the destination, most of them have huge room size, typically 30-50 % bigger than your average hotel room in the hills. Not only the rooms are big they have many amenities in the rooms as per the room tariff and category like tea coffee maker, TV, attached bath etc. Now you may say that these things are now very common, but remember we are talking about some of the remotest places in Kumaon where all these facilities are provided. Coming back to room size my room in the Naukuchiatal KMVN TRH was so big that you could complete your morning walk from room to bathroom only. OK, I exaggerate, but you get the gist

But the large room size is really handy when you are traveling with kids as they can easily sleep on the extra bed or in some cases like in Chaukori and Kausani in attached smaller bedroom/sitting area.

 Dining Facilities:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 All KMVN guesthouses & hotels have a well-appointed kitchen and trained staff to cook simple food that you can have in the Dining Hall or in your room. Though I would suggest you have it in the Dining hall as some of the properties are so spread out that by the time food will reach you it will get cold.  We found the food served in KMVNL Tourist rest houses to be simple, homely yet delicious. We tried a few local dishes like Bhat kee Daal, Raita, local pickles and some common dishes you now find everywhere in India like fried dal, Aloo Mattar, Pooree Bhajee etc. Non-vegetarian food is available in all the hotels but at smaller places, you may have to place the order in advance as they bring the chicken egg etc. from the local market, that could be a few KM away.

The Dining Hall

Budget Friendly:  While some of the KMVN hotels are at par with the market rates, most of them also have rooms that fit the budget traveler also. Some of the rooms that are newly constructed can cost upward of USD 80 per night you will also get rooms that cost around 20 USD or around 1500 INR per night. In most cases, the breakfast is included so it is a great deal considering the location and size of the rooms. Not only that some of the hotels like the one in Sitlakhet also have Dormitory facilities for backpackers and trekkers who are on a tight budget.

Gardens & Lawns: Some of the most beautiful flowers on this trip I clicked at the KMVN hotel gardens. Some of my favorite again would be Kausani, Chaukori, and Naukuchiatal. The lawns and gardens were well maintained with beautiful flowers blooming everywhere you looked. Even in some of the smaller places like in Sitlakhet and Gangolihaat, there was no shortage of flowers to click in the small but well-maintained flower patches. Well Trained Courteous Staff:  In all the properties we stayed with KMVN right from Naukuchiatal to the last one in Nanakmatta we found the staff to be well trained in the job they were to do and also very courteous and willing to accommodate our special request whether related to food or arranging chai, pakodas, chair and tables for our endless gup-shup sessions in the lawns. Indeed we have some great memories sitting on the lawn looking at snowcapped peaks and enjoying Garma-garam chai with pakodas served to us. Not only the in hotel staff but also the field staff that accompanies you on treks / adventure activities is given training for there activities as we learned from Mr. Ramesh Kapkoti, a well-known traveler and high altitude trekker from Uttarakhand Tourism who was accompanying us and helped us learn about the local trees, mountain ranges, customs etc.

Eco-friendly Approach: All the hotels of KMVN Ltd are doing there bit for a sustainable travel experience for the visitors.  All the guest rooms have jugs / reusable bottles so that plastic bottles can be avoided. Though they are available to those who insist on bottled water, the preference is given to refillable jugs/bottles. Most of the food is sourced locally and we enjoyed the local veggies in our meal that tasted much better than what we get in the cities. I think there is some merit to grow and consume local movement. But the best part I liked was tree plantation drive. In order to celebrate our visit to Sitlakhet as we were there during the month of Shravan ( rainy season) when Kumaon celebrates Harela Festival, we participated in tree plantations in front of our hotel. If you are staying in the Sitlakhet KMVN TRH you will find a small Citrus tree in front of it planted by Bloggers Bus 3.0 participants, and then if you walk a little down towards a clearing on the left of the hotel you will find a small Thuja orientalis tree planted by yours truly along with some other travelers from Bloggers Bus 3.0. Do say my hi to our trees when you are there and share the pictures.

Uttarakhand Tourism saw a sharp rise in popularity the last couple of years. This northern state in India is a cornucopia of many hill stations and tourist attractions. There is so much to do and so much to see as Uttarakhand is blessed with natural beauty – jungles, rivers, snow-clad mountains and an inherent sense of divinity. The state is also called “Devbhumi” (“The Land of the Gods”) as it is home to many highly revered shrines like Badrinath, Kedarnath and so many others. And then there is offbeat Uttarakhand that we keep exploring whenever we can find an opportunity.

  It can take a whole book to write about what are the best things to do in Uttarakhand. But that is for another day. Here is our humble attempt to create an Uttarakhand guide about what all can you do in 7 days, through this 7 Day Uttarakhand Travel Itinerary and Guide. We have tried to include destinations that you can reach within 6-7 hours of journey from each other.

  How to reach Uttarakhand

The best way to reach Uttarakhand from any part of the world is by starting from Delhi. Delhi is very well-connected with Uttarakhand via road, rail and air. Though there are 5 airports in Uttarakhand, you may or may not get a direct flight. Once you are in Delhi, you can opt for road transport like a rented cab, bus or a self driven car. From our experience, Uttarakhand road trips are most convenient to reach some of the offbeat places.

  The Best of Uttarakhand in One Week

  Day 1 – Delhi to Haridwar

Haridwar is famous for River Ganges. It is a temple town in Uttarakhand and is famous for its Ganga Aarti that is performed every morning and evening. One can cover the 200 kms odd strech from Delhi to Haridwar within 5 hours and the road condition is good. The stretch is full of eating options like dhabas, hotels and cafes. The good part is Haridwar is in the Himalayan foothills so one can expect decent weather.

    Things to do in Haridwar include Ganga Aarti especially in the evening. It’s a spectacle like no other. Thousands of devotees gather around the river banks to offer prayers to Goddess Ganga. Priests with lamps in their hands chant mantras and the atmosphere looks blissful. There are myriad temples in Haridwar each with a different story. You can also visit Rishikesh from Haridwar which is barely 45 minutes drive and there are some famous temples and ashram in Rishikesh. The famous Beatles Ashram is also in Rishikesh. One can opt for hourly meditation and spa sessions in Rishikesh as well. This zone is also the most popular water rafting zone in North India.

Day 2 – Haridwar to Mussoorie

Haridwar to Mussoorie is around 85kms and is not more than a 3 hours drive. Mussoorie is also called the “Queen of Hills” and hence from Day 2 your trip is going to be mostly on high terrain. Mussoorie is immensely popular with tourists because of many reasons. For one, Mussoorie has great weather throughout the year. Further, it has access to all sorts of hotel options from basic to luxury, from family friendly places to hostels and dormitories. Thirdly, this place has fantastic connectivity to other locations in Uttarakhand.

    Things to do in Mussoorie include pottering down the famous Mall Road, trekking to Char Dukan, St Paul’s Church and early morning walk to camel’s back point. While trekking, do look out for antique and cobbler shops that make handmade shoes on order. A visit to hill resort Rockby’s Manor and savouring cheese omelette at Lovely Omelette Shop are also highly recommended. You may shop for souvenirs from the Mall Road of Mussoorie. It is full of gift options for all tastes and budgets.

  Day 3 – Mussoorie to Chakrata

  You will drive 100kms and reach Chakrata in a span of 3 hours  from Mussoorie and see a completely different side of Uttarakhand here. While Mussoorie is extremely touristy, Chakrata is quite the opposite. It is an offbeat place and you may not see many tourists here. But it is breathtakingly beautiful and has retained its tranquillity. Chakrata is less explored but there are also many things one can do here in addition to soaking in the natural beauty. The most popular activity here is to visit Tiger Falls. These falls create sounds of roaring tigers when water drops from top of the hill to the pond at the bottom. It is a perfect picnic spot and you can frolic in the water. Apart from the waterfalls one can also visit Mahsu Temple and Budher Caves. 

For adventure lovers there are arrangements for water rappelling at Kimona Falls.

Day 4 – Chakrata to Lansdowne

Start the day early and within 6-7 hours of driving from Chakrata, covering around 250 kms, you will reach Lansdowne, a sleepy hill station in Uttarakhand. Lansdowne is essentially a Cantonment Town, and is home to the eilte  Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army and hence you can expect peace, cleanliness and order. It is one of our most favorite places in Uttarakhand, no wonder we have visited it many times.

    Things to do in Lansdowne include visiting Bulla Taal, a manmade lake which almost looks like a set from Indiana Jones movie, St Mary’s Church and trek up to Tiffin Top. We would highly recommend doing all these things by foot. All these things are under one hour trekking from each other and you will be able to absorb the beauty of Lansdowne better. Don’t forget to savour the famous chocolate burfi and Baal Mithai – the specialty desserts of this region. We bet you will get these packed for friends and family.

  Day 5 – Lansdowne to Nainital

A 6-7 hour drive covering around 250 kms will take you from Lansdowne to Nainital, which is perhaps the busiest hill station in Uttarakhand. Just like Mussoorie, Nainital also gets tourists all through the year. Summer vacations are the peak season in Nainital and if you don’t like crowds you should avoid holiday months for visiting this place. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful hill station any day.

    The Naini Lake surrounded by green mountains is the heart of this place. Boating in Naini Lake is just one of the things to do here. Apart from this, you can visit the Naina Devi Temple, enjoy cable car rides and visit Eco Caves Garden. The Mall Road is a perfect place for shopping. Look out for hand carved wax candles here. This is a local handicraft and the candles come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. We would also highly recommend breakfast and bakery items at The Sakleys, A Mountain Cafe on Mall Road.

  Day 6 – Kausani Day Trip

Don’t check out from your hotel at Nainital when you start for Kausani the next morning. Kausani can be visited from Nainital and one is advised to come back the same night since there are not many lodging options in Kausani. The driving time from Nainital to Kasauni is less than 4 hours and Kausani will give you a much-needed break from the humdrum of Nainital. Start early in the morning and you can visit Neem Karouli Ashram and Katarmal Sun Temple on route to Kausani. If you love history, Katarmal Sun Temple may turn out to be a spectacular experience.

    Kausani is a quaint little hamlet in Uttarakhand and would be loved by travellers who like peace and solitude. Apart from watching the valley from the binoculars from the highest point here, one must visit Gandhiji’s Anashakti Ashram in Kausani. It is a beautiful ashram cum museum displaying Gandhi memorabilia. Kausani is a perfect place to just be and not do anything. Just be one with nature and be awed by the variety of brightly coloured wild flowers. Start on your way back around sunset and you’ll be in Nainital by dinner time.

  Fredy’s Bungalow – The perfect place to disconnect with the World and reconnect with nature and yourself

  Another interesting alternative, is to head out of Nainital, and drive to Bhimtal, an hour away, and check into Fredy’s Bungalow – A Colonial style bungalow, for the night, surrounded by nature, which is perfect for disconnecting and reconnecting with nature. Among the many things that you can do, the best of the lot is to go hiking which also involves plenty of bird watching.

Day 7 – Nainital to Jim Corbett National Park 

Jim Corbett National Park, the last destination on this 7 Day Uttarakhand Road Trip Itinerary, is barely 2 hours from Nainital and this would be your drive downhill back to the plains. Jim Corbett National Park, which also happens to be one of the Best National Parks in India, is famous for its jungle safari which happens early mornings and evenings. Most of the accommodation here are resorts, such as Aahana Resort and there are barely any standalone restaurants. It is highly advisable to pre book your jungle safari as the better zones get full very easily. If you are lucky you may see tigers in the jungle but it highly depends on which zone are you in and which month you visit Jim Corbett. Don’t focus too much on tiger sightings and enjoy the deer, nilgai, and host of birds like kingfisher that would surely come your way. The overall safari experience is beautiful.

  Apart from jungle safari, one can go for a village tour on foot or on a bicycle that your resort may provide. Since it’s your last day in Uttarakhand we would highly recommend taking it easy and Jim Corbett is a perfect place for that. The place has a very relaxed and laid-back vibe. Being forest area travellers are not advised to venture out in the night. That is the best time to chill in a pool or rejuvenate in a spa inside the resort.

  Day 8 – Back to Delhi

Start after breakfast from Jim Corbett National Park and after a 5 hours drive, you will be in Delhi with your cameras full of beautiful pictures and your hearts full of amazing memories.

  This blog post is about my experience of staying at Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam Ltd Hotels during our Bloggers Bus journey with Uttarakhand Tourism

During my travels, I have stayed in all kind of hotels, guest houses, luxury resorts, and even campsite, but I rarely write about the hotels I stay as mostly my focus is on the destination & experience. I have actually said no to many a hotel FAM trips as it just meant staying in the hotel and writing about it. While I am always keen to explore around also and experience the place, interact with people and maybe chat with friends whom I have never met so far. Anyways enough of my quirks, let me share my experience of staying at Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam Ltd Hotels or Tourist Rest Houses as they are called.

What is Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam Limited?

In order to promote tourism and related activities in Kumaon and Garhwal regions, the government formed two organizations Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam & Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam Ltd. The aim of these bodies is to develop sustainable tourism activities in the area. Kumaon Mandal or KMVNL as it is commonly called is responsible for developing tourism infrastructure in the Kumaon region. The KVMNL operates tourist rest houses in all major tourist attractions in Kumaon. Besides owning & operating tourist rest house KMVNL is also engaged in organizing treks to in Kumaon to different places of interest like Pindari Glacier and even facilitating, the revered Kailash Mansarovar Yatra for pilgrims.

As part of there offerings, the KMVNL owns and operates Tourist rest houses in various parts of Kumaon. This blog post is about my experience of staying in these properties and the reasons to stay in Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam Ltd hotels.

So here are my top 7 reasons to stay at Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam Ltd Hotels

Location Location Location :  

Room with a view: Naukuchiatal Kumaon Mandal Hotel is more like a colonial bungalow

 A major reason for me to chose a hotel is a location more so when you are in the Himalayas and want the best possible view of the snowcapped peaks or the pristine Deodar or Rhodendron forests around you. Here KMVNL scores top marks and most of the properties we stayed had the best possible view in the place. But if you ask my favorites I will give you not one but 3 as late Lord Harold Samuel, a real estate tycoon in Britain, coined the expression: ‘There are three things that matter in property: location, location, location.’  So my favorite 3 locations in no particular order were KMVN Ltd rest house in Naukuchiatal, the resort in Chaukori and the hotel in Kausani. In Naukuchiatal we were right at the lakefront and I could see the lake while sitting in the balcony of my room. We could see many birds chirping around as we strolled around the hotel grounds. In Kausani, right from my hotel room, we could see some of the highest peaks in the Kumaon Himalayas right from Nanda Devi, Trishul,  etc, as we watched clouds playing hide and seek with these peaks in the range of 20,000 feet height. In Chaukori the view was even close and had a feeling you could actually touch the peaks

Room Size & Amenities:

I could only get about 1/4 of the room in my mobile camera such is the size of rooms at Naukuchiatal Kuman Mandal Hotel

Not only the KMVN hotels are situated at the best possible location at the destination, most of them have huge room size, typically 30-50 % bigger than your average hotel room in the hills. Not only the rooms are big they have many amenities in the rooms as per the room tariff and category like tea coffee maker, TV, attached bath etc. Now you may say that these things are now very common, but remember we are talking about some of the remotest places in Kumaon where all these facilities are provided. Coming back to room size my room in the Naukuchiatal KMVN TRH was so big that you could complete your morning walk from room to bathroom only. OK, I exaggerate, but you get the gist

But the large room size is really handy when you are traveling with kids as they can easily sleep on the extra bed or in some cases like in Chaukori and Kausani in attached smaller bedroom/sitting area.

 Dining Facilities:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 All KMVN guesthouses & hotels have a well-appointed kitchen and trained staff to cook simple food that you can have in the Dining Hall or in your room. Though I would suggest you have it in the Dining hall as some of the properties are so spread out that by the time food will reach you it will get cold.  We found the food served in KMVNL Tourist rest houses to be simple, homely yet delicious. We tried a few local dishes like Bhat kee Daal, Raita, local pickles and some common dishes you now find everywhere in India like fried dal, Aloo Mattar, Pooree Bhajee etc. Non-vegetarian food is available in all the hotels but at smaller places, you may have to place the order in advance as they bring the chicken egg etc. from the local market, that could be a few KM away.

The Dining Hall

Budget Friendly:  While some of the KMVN hotels are at par with the market rates, most of them also have rooms that fit the budget traveler also. Some of the rooms that are newly constructed can cost upward of USD 80 per night you will also get rooms that cost around 20 USD or around 1500 INR per night. In most cases, the breakfast is included so it is a great deal considering the location and size of the rooms. Not only that some of the hotels like the one in Sitlakhet also have Dormitory facilities for backpackers and trekkers who are on a tight budget.

Gardens & Lawns: Some of the most beautiful flowers on this trip I clicked at the KMVN hotel gardens. Some of my favorite again would be Kausani, Chaukori, and Naukuchiatal. The lawns and gardens were well maintained with beautiful flowers blooming everywhere you looked. Even in some of the smaller places like in Sitlakhet and Gangolihaat, there was no shortage of flowers to click in the small but well-maintained flower patches. Many a photo session were conducted early morning in the lawns of KVMN TRHs as we were surrounded by beautiful flowers making a perfect location for photo shoots. No wonder many new movies are being filmed in Uttarakhand now as it offers a great location with might Himalayan peaks as the backdrop.

Chaukori Kumaon Mandal Tourist Rest House has the best flowers in my opinion

Mr. Ramesh Kapkoti, from Uttarakhand Tourism, shared his knowledge about local customs, treks, trees etc. with us

Well Trained Courteous Staff:  In all the properties we stayed with KMVN right from Naukuchiatal to the last one in Nanakmatta we found the staff to be well trained in the job they were to do and also very courteous and willing to accommodate our special request whether related to food or arranging chai, pakodas, chair and tables for our endless gup-shup sessions in the lawns. Indeed we have some great memories sitting on the lawn looking at snowcapped peaks and enjoying Garma-garam chai with pakodas served to us. Not only the in hotel staff but also the field staff that accompanies you on treks / adventure activities is given training for there activities as we learned from Mr. Ramesh Kapkoti, a well-known traveler and high altitude trekker from Uttarakhand Tourism who was accompanying us and helped us learn about the local trees, mountain ranges, customs etc.

Bloggers Ka Swagat Pakodon Say, Kiya Jaye

Eco-friendly Approach: All the hotels of KMVN Ltd are doing there bit for a sustainable travel experience for the visitors.  All the guest rooms have jugs / reusable bottles so that plastic bottles can be avoided. Though they are available to those who insist on bottled water, the preference is given to refillable jugs/bottles. Most of the food is sourced locally and we enjoyed the local veggies in our meal that tasted much better than what we get in the cities. I think there is some merit to grow and consume local movement. But the best part I liked was tree plantation drive. In order to celebrate our visit to Sitlakhet as we were there during the month of Shravan ( rainy season) when Kumaon celebrates Harela Festival, we participated in tree plantations in front of our hotel. If you are staying in the Sitlakhet KMVN TRH you will find a small Citrus tree in front of it planted by Bloggers Bus 3.0 participants, and then if you walk a little down towards a clearing on the left of the hotel you will find a small Thuja orientalis tree planted by yours truly along with some other travelers from Bloggers Bus 3.0. Do say my hi to our trees when you are there and share the pictures.
