You could drive the GTS in Sport mode all day, every day without it ever feeling high-strung, while Sport Plus is best left for tighter sections of winding roads where you’ll want to take advantage of its tendency to hold gears up near the engine’s redline.
The GTS’ powertrain is fine, but the chassis, steering and brakes really make this Macan feel special. Porsche’s adaptive air suspension comes standard and can lower the Macan by 10 millimeters in Sport and Sport Plus modes. Porsche’s Active Suspension Management (PASM) dampers are a perfect match to the air-ride system, delivering a smooth ride on broken pavement while keeping the GTS taut and composed on smooth stretches of canyon roads. Even with my tester’s upsized 21-inch wheels and staggered 265/40 front and 295/35 rear tires, the Macan never feels too stiff or too floaty for any given scenario. Honestly, the ride quality might be the GTS’ single best attribute.

My tester has Porsche’s Surface Coated Brakes (PSCB), which were kind of bad when they first launched on the Cayenne, but have since been reworked with new pads, better pedal feel and a more progressive stopping experience. Now, these brakes are quite good and reduce dust buildup on the wheels. Whether they’re worth the $3,490 upgrade over the perfectly fine standard steel brakes, though, is hard to say.
One option worth adding is Porsche’s brake-based torque-vectoring tech, for $1,500. This ability to modulate power from side to side at the rear axle improves the Macan’s cornering reflexes, making this already-sharp little crossover even more entertaining. You’ll never feel it working, but you’ll find it easier to keep up with smaller, more powerful sports cars on mountain roads.
Going for the GTS gets you the Sport Design exterior treatment, with black-painted exterior accents, LED headlights and a darker tint to the rear taillight bar. Inside, you get sport seats wrapped in leather, though you can have the whole cabin done up in Alcantara suede with Carmine Red stitching as part of the $4,790 GTS Interior Package. Like all Macans, the GTS is plenty comfortable for driver and passenger up front, but the rear seats are awfully small, even by compact SUV measurements.
The PCM infotainment tech is new but the rest of the interior is showing its age.

The Macan got a welcome tech upgrade as part of a refresh in 2018 and now runs Porsche’s Communication Management infotainment software on a 10.9-inch touchscreen. PCM continues to impress with its quick responses to inputs, online search tools, bright graphics and reconfigurable home screen. A Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay are standard, but Android Auto is still a no-go. Too bad.
Look below the touchscreen, though, and you’ll find a sea of controls on the console — a reminder that the Macan is a bit older than Porsche’s other models. Sure, the rows of buttons are clearly labeled and easy to use, they just look outdated, especially compared to the flush, backlit designs of Porsche’s newer products.
I’d love to tell you about all of the Macan’s standard driver-assistance features, but as is the case with every Porsche, all the good stuff costs extra and is available a la carte. A surround-view camera is $1,200. You can buy lane-change assist and lane-keeping assist for $700 apiece, or just spend $1,380 and get them as part of a bundle. Adaptive cruise control comes in for an additional $1,170, and if you want freaking keyless entry, that’s an extra $800, too. Sheesh.
The Macan is hands-down the best-driving compact luxury SUV.

My Carmine Red tester is a German-spec model that Porsche flew over for testing, so I don’t have an exact price for the SUV you see here. Playing around to the best of my ability on Porsche’s configurator, I’m going to guesstimate an as-tested price of $94,000 out the door, give or take a few Benjamins.
If you compare price tags, the Macan GTS is sort of a hard sell against competitors like the BMW X3 M40i or Mercedes-AMG GLC43, both of which can be nicely equipped for less than the Porsche’s starting MSRP. The trade-off for being so much better in corners is well worth it, though, because the Porsche is still comfortable enough with the suspension set to its least aggressive mode. The Macan’s V6 is definitely the superior-sounding unit, though. Neither car’s engine is an all-time great, but with the GTS’s Sports exhaust it has a sweeter note. The snappy seven-speed dual-clutch PDK box really helps that; its shifts are faster than the conventional auto’s in the Audi. The Porsche delivers an identical output, but it’s available over a wider range in the Audi because the maximum grunt comes in from as low as 1,370rpm, up to 4,500rpm. It proved itself in our in-gear acceleration tests, taking 4.5 seconds to go from 50-70mph in fifth gear where the Macan took 5.2 seconds. Just like the Porsche, the Audi boasts plenty of traction off the line thanks to its four-wheel drive. This meant it took 5.3 seconds to cover 0-60mph – just three tenths slower than its rival. Both cars feel incredibly quick off the mark for their size because of their clever automatic transmissions that deliver the perfect getaway every time. It was close enough that you’d be hard-pressed to tell which was faster in the sprint without a timer. There’s more body roll than in the GTS as well, but of course the trade-off is the ride quality. Set the Audi’s adaptive chassis to Comfort and it’s smoother over rough roads, while it does a better job of soaking up big bumps and deep potholes. However, the difference between the cars is marginal, and we think the slightly firmer, more focused ride in the Macan is worth it. The SQ5’s conventional eight-speed automatic gearbox is smooth and manages relaxed low-speed shifts nicely, as well as quicker changes when you’re accelerating hard. The trouble is, it’s not as responsive to manual shifts as the PDK set-up in the Macan, while it occasionally finds itself in the wrong gear when you’re driving around town. That’s especially impressive considering the SUV’s all-season Pirelli tires, which we found to hinder handling and braking. We wouldn’t be surprised to see the F-Pace SVR become even quicker if shod with proper summer tires. Regardless, it’s quick, fast, sporty, noisy, and super fun.
Porsche Macan Turbo Performance Pack: 3.7 Seconds
When we first tested the Porsche Macan Turbo, its 400 hp and 406 lb-ft got it from 0–60 mph in 4.2 seconds. That’s good and quick, but it pales against what we got from one fitted with the optional Performance package, which wrings another 40 hp and 36 lb-ft from the 3.6-liter twin-turbo V-6. It shaved a full half-second off the sprint for a 0–60 mph time of 3.7 seconds. Best of all, we found that with Porsche’s easy-to-use launch control, each run is nearly identical. Worst of all, that slice of speed comes at a dear price: The Performance package adds $10,500 to the already pricey—and fast—Macan Turbo. Worth it?
BMW X6 M: 3.7 Seconds
Even after a decade on the market and entering its third generation, the BMW X6 makes us ask: Why? Why take a capable and spacious X5 and chop the roof down? Style is the presumed answer, but that’s entirely subjective. Speed, however, can be measured and compared. In that regard a 3.7-second 0–60 mph run gives the X6 M a reason to exist. This hefty hunchback rockets off the line with 567 twin-turbocharged horsepower and combines performance and aesthetics in a way other automakers are keen to mimic. And if you still think an SUV should have as much utility as it does sport, the BMW X5 M is equally quick in the 0–60 mph sprint.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio: 3.3 Seconds
Just look at the Alfa Romeo Stelvio—it’s gorgeous. Swooping curves and elegant proportions make it a real looker, but if you spot a four-leaf clover on the quarter panel, you should clear the way. This innocuous-seeming sprout indicates it’s the racy Quadrifoglio version, which launches from 0–60 mph in 3.3 seconds. It does that with the smallest engine of any SUV on this list; its 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 makes 505 horsepower. Not to mention, it’s a sublime handler. Style, speed, and emotion are hallmarks of Italian cars. Now, Alfa Romeo applies those to an SUV.
Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk: 3.3 Seconds
Jeep Grand Cherokee, meet Hellcat engine. Bolting that ridiculous 707-hp supercharged V-8 into an SUV seemed like destiny, and it came to fruition in the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. What it sacrifices in off-road capability it gains in supreme speed, shrieking to 60 mph in a scant 3.3 seconds. Thanks to all-wheel drive, it’s actually the quickest of all the Hellcat-engined vehicles (except for the dragstrip-demolishing Dodge Demon), which struggle to put that prodigious power to the ground through the rear tires only. A catty SUV you can put your dogs in—imagine that.
Porsche Cayenne Turbo: 3.2 Seconds
Porsche wasn’t the first European manufacturer to build an SUV, but it was the one that brought performance into the equation. At this point the Cayenne Turbo is an institution, and it becomes quicker, sharper, and more capable with each generation, as is the Porsche way. These days the über-fast SUV hits 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, just as quick as a 997 911 Turbo. Note that this is merely the standard Cayenne Turbo with 541 hp and 567 lb-ft, not the Turbo S E-Hybrid with 670 hp and 663 lb-ft on tap—there may be acceleration to gain from electrification. The Cayenne was an originator, and it continues to push the fast-SUV segment forward.
Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S: 3.2 Seconds
Perhaps inspired by the X6, Mercedes-Benz took its popular GLC and coupe-ified it into a sloping four-door fastback. Then AMG got a hold of it, and the GLC 63 S 4Matic+ Coupe was unleashed on the world. We measured a 3.2-second 0–60 mph acceleration run, making it quite a bit quicker than even Mercedes-AMG’s V-12 flagship coupe models. Here’s an SUV, outsprinting some of the finest sport-luxury cars in the world—nothing makes sense anymore.
Tesla Model X P90D: 3.2 Seconds
Remember when electric cars were seen as goofy appliances only tree huggers drove? How things have changed. Tesla sparked a paradigm shift in electric performance, and its Model X zaps almost everything in the SUV realm. Equipped with optional Ludicrous mode, this falcon-doored, American-made family hauler can “Space X” to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds. That it does it with only a quiet whirr from its dual motors adds to the surreal nature of the experience. Mainstream automakers are hard at work to build Model X competitors, but so far none has been anywhere near as quick.
Bentley Bentayga Speed: 3.1 Seconds
The name says it all. The Bentayga Speed is the world’s fastest production SUV, with a claimed 190-mph top speed. And it’s plenty quick getting there, too. We measured a 3.1-second 0–60 mph time, scarcely believable considering its tonnage. A 626-hp 6.0-liter W-12 can’t be wrong, though, and provides all that thrust amid opulence becoming of the flying B badge. Back off the throttle, and it’s as much of a luxury car you could ever ask for—step back on it to drop anyone on your tail.
Lamborghini Urus: 3.0 Seconds
With the Urus, Lamborghini transcended the performance SUV plane and established something new. It’s a genuine exotic SUV, with all the panache and power that makes it worthy of the raging bull on its hood. Its Porsche Motorsports-tuned 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 is likely underrated at 641 hp and 627 lb-ft, but whatever the true power output, it lets the Urus charge to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds dead—making it the fastest-accelerating SUV we’ve ever tested.

Porsche’s $150,000 Electric Taycan Turbo Is Aimed Right at Tesla
(Bloomberg) — After four years of hype, Porsche has debuted the Taycan electric car. The four-door sedan is the first all-electric vehicle from the Stuttgart, Germany-based automaker. (Although its founder, Ferdinand Porsche, built hybrid-electric “electromobile” cars under his own name as early as 1900.) The first models in the new series are the $185,000, 750-horsepower Taycan Turbo S and the $150,900, 670-horsepower Taycan Turbo.

Range was announced as 450 kilometers, or 279 miles, which is less than that of the latest Tesla Model S. Less powerful—and likely less expensive—variants of the all-wheel-drive cars will follow later this year: The first big derivative, called the Taycan Cross Turismo, will arrive at the end of next year.
“We know we need to continue evolving, because the world around us is evolving,” said Klaus Zellmer, head of Porsche North America, at the debut on Sept. 4 in Niagara Falls, Ontario. “In the automotive industry we will see more change in the next five years than we have seen in the past 50.”
Roughly 200 journalists and invited guests gathered at the site—known for hydroelectric power—for the unveiling on Wednesday morning, which occurred simultaneously with mirror events at a solar farm near Berlin and a wind farm near Shanghai. “The future is electric, whether you want it or not,” Zellmer said.
The 2020 Porsche Taycan represents the biggest investment Porsche has ever made in a new model, Zellmer said, incorporating funds from $6.6 billion the company has devoted to making electric vehicles at a new factory in Stuttgart.

It benefits from the additional $2 billion that parent group Volkswagen AG spent to build the Electrify American program, a VW subsidiary that owns and maintains a national network to charge electric vehicles. Roughly $800 million of that sum will be used to build an electric network in California alone.

It also spells the birth of an entire third appendage to the Porsche portfolio, adding battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) to the existing roster of combustion engine and hybrid-motored vehicles, such as the Cayman, Macan, Panamera, and 911. After the Taycan Cross Turismo electric car, there will be a fully electric Macan, Zellmer said: “By 2025, more than 50% of all Porsche vehicles sold worldwide will have a plug.”
Same, but Different
The 2020 Porsche Taycan looks much like the Mission E Concept that debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015, with some notable changes. It has lost the suicide doors, futuristic disc wheels, and rear definition that the concept had, mainly due to safety regulations and concerns, said Chad Bass, Porsche’s manager of E Performance. With seating for four and a trunk big enough to hold two large golf bags, the current iteration looks most similar to the $86,300 Panamera sedan.

It has two electric motors, one at the front axle and one at the rear axle, that allow the Taycan Turbo S to go from zero to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds, while the Taycan Turbo can do it in 3 seconds. Both times equal, but do not beat, times posted by Tesla’s Model S. Top speed for both is 161 mph.
But don’t let the “Turbo” name fool you. The Taycan is not turbocharged. Porsche is using the term “Turbo” for branding only, since an actual turbocharger is a device driven by an engine’s exhaust gas that forces compressed air into a combustion chamber to enhance efficiencies in internal combustion engines—not in electric motors.
“For Porsche, the Turbo name represents a brand, the top tier of our performance vehicles,” Calvin Kim, a Porsche spokesman, said in an email. “As the new Taycan Turbo and Turbo S represent the top tier of the Taycan family celebrating its world premier today, we believe it deserves the title.”
Under the hood and chassis, Taycan packs adaptive air suspension, rear-wheel steering, and four drive modes. Those include “Normal,” “Sport,” “Sport Plus,” and “Range.” An individual system can also be configured according to preferences. Unlike other electric cars that operate in one gear, the Taycan has a two-speed transmission, allowing it a quicker acceleration rate and then, in second gear, to maintain efficiency and power while traveling at high speeds better than a typical single-gear configuration would.

The Taycan will also be the world’s first production vehicle with a system voltage that can charge with 800 volts, instead of the commonly used 400 volts for electric cars. That means that under ideal conditions (not fast driving, not running the AC), the time to get from 5% to 80% charged will be 22.5 minutes.
The 800-watt chargers are part of Porsche’s plan to afford easy charging to all Taycan owners. Each Porsche dealership and experience center will offer quick-charge stations, and each Taycan owner will receive three years of free charging on the Electrify America network.
Inside, most of the conventional buttons and knobs found in previous Porsches have disappeared in favor of an almost totally touch-controlled dashboard and center console. The main instrument cluster is a curved, 16.8-inch screen with a small touch-control field at the edges to alter light and chassis functions.
Drivers can choose among four display modes for the configurable cluster, including “Classic,” which is reminiscent of traditional Porsche gauges (minus the tachometer), and “Pure,” which simply displays such essential information as speed and route guidance.
There’s also a 10.9-inch infotainment system with customizable home screen and an angled 8.4-inch touch panel with handwriting recognition to control things such as the climate inside the cabin. The Porsche Taycan will be the first car ever to come with Apple Music built directly into the car’s entertainment system.
In the rear of the cabin, a 5.9-inch touch control panel directs climate and audio zones. Interior trimming materials made sustainably from recycled polyester fibers and floor coverings and from old fishing nets are available.
The First of Many Electrics
At a private event on Tuesday evening, before the debut in Canada, Zellmer showed a film comparing the the Porsche line’s introduction of electric technology to when the company first introduced turbocharging to such endurance racing cars as the 917 and later, the 930 production car. Electrification of the Porsche line is a calculated risk, an announcer said, but the company thrives on the challenge.
“Taycan is a turning point for Porsche and the entire automotive industry as it raises the technical bar for EVs beyond Tesla,” said Michael Dean, a senior automotive analyst for Bloomberg Intelligence, in his latest report on the company.
Porsche is using the Taycan to break into the all-electric segment slightly differently than did such competitors as Audi and Jaguar, which chose to attack Tesla’s dominance with their own all-electric SUVs, the e-Tron and i-Pace, respectively. Porsche, on the other hand, opted to jump into the all-electric market in the form of a four-door sedan. (It debuted the 918 hybrid supercar in 2013 and Cayenne hybrid SUV in 2014, but Taycan is the first modern Porsche vehicle that is all-electric.)
“The Taycan should achieve a rare feat for a first-generation BEV and be profitable from launch, given Porsche’s proven pricing power, albeit at vastly reduced margins as compared with gas-powered models, in our view,” Dean said.
Reportedly all 10,000 of the Taycan units allocated to North America have already sold, with an additional 10,000 to 20,000 slated for the rest of the world. None have been allotted to the Porsche car-sharing program, Porsche Password.
Perhaps the biggest question regarding the triumph of the new vehicle is how it compares to its closest competitor, the Tesla Model S. The pre-eminent electric sedan—with a price range from $79,990 to well over $100,000—Model S has set the bar as the first and best option for a luxury-level electric sedan. It has a total equivalent of from 417 horsepower up to 762hp and an all-electric range of up to 370 miles. The Taycan’s pricing, however, will start in a higher category than that of the Teslas: $185,000 for the Taycan Turbo S and $150,900 for the Taycan Turbo.
Zellmer said that 50% of the people who have reserved a Taycan are new to the brand, with the most conquests coming via Tesla owners. The biggest switch from the other half of the Taycan reservers are those who own the 911.
Porsche brass have downplayed the likelihood that Taycan would cannibalize sales of the Panamera sedan, which accounted for less than 10% of all the brand’s sales globally last year. (By contrast, the Cayenne and Macan SUVs comprise more than 60% of all Porsche sales.) Since the Taycan offers blinding speed and the aura of the new fancy thing, consumers may wonder why they should buy the more ubiquitous Panamera at all, especially in the hybrid versions.
“People will want combustion engine cars for a long time,” Bass said, adding that he did not foresee the Taycan taking a big chunk of Panamera sales.
The debut came a week after Porsche announced it had set a record-breaking lap of 7 minutes, 42 seconds for a four-door electric vehicle at the Nuerburgring race track in Germany. The Tesla Model S has not publicly attempted that record.
Deliveries to the United States will begin in early 2020.

The X6 M managed to pull 0.98 g on the skidpad, which is among the highest numbers we’ve recorded for an SUV.

The folks at Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations estimated this SUV to hit 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, but we actually clocked it at 3.7. Subtle indications of its go-fast capabilities include its quad tailpipes, large air intakes, and vents in the hood and front fenders.

We can’t wait to see what the updated Model X Performance with Ludicrous mode will do.
2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S 4Matic+ Coupe

The GLC 63 S reigns supreme among coupe SUVs. We tested it hitting 60 mph in 3.2 seconds using a powerful 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine making 503 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.
2020 Bentley Bentayga Speed

¼ mile: 11.5 seconds at 120.7 mph
This year, Bentley is rolling out an even hotter Bentayga. The new Speed version makes 626 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque from its massive 6.0-liter W-12 engine. Top speed is rated a wild 190 mph. The model is available with the largest and most powerful ceramic brakes Bentley has ever used, boasting a maximum braking torque of 4,425 lb-ft.

Yes, folks, this is the single quickest SUV we have ever tested. Its twin-turbo V-8, which is probably the best-sounding engine of its kind, delivers a proud 641 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to propel this 4,900-pound SUV to 60 mph in 3 seconds flat and on to a top speed of 189.5 mph. Not only is it fast, but it’s also a capable off-roader.

Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 Yellow Night Edition 2017 review
Image 1 of 16 Image 1 of 16 3 Oct, 2017 9:30am Lawrence Allan There's no denying the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 Yellow Night Edition is quick, but at over £53k that pace comes at a significant price Mercedes is often accused of needless niche-filling, and cars like the AMG-tuned GLA 45 are frequently cited as evidence. But with the explosion of the crossover market in Europe, manufacturers are rolling out new SUV-inspired variants at a rate of knots, and several hot versions are around the corner. Having been on sale for over two years now, the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 was actually ahead of the game – but that hasn’t stopped it from gaining a series of mid-life updates along with the rest of the GLA range. We’re driving a UK-spec version of the revised Audi RS Q3 rival to see what has changed. • Best performance cars on sale External revisions for the GLA 45 aren’t blindingly obvious at first, but the devil is in the detail. A new front apron sees vertical louvres added to the air intakes and a silver chrome splitter. At the rear you’ll find a tweaked spoiler and new diffuser insert. None of these are just fashion accessories, either. Cooling is improved as a result, while the drag coefficient has been lowered slightly, too. Image 2 of 16 Image 2 of 16 The chintz is added by our test car’s flagship Yellow Night Edition specification. The abundance of yellow decals and yellow-rimmed wheels means it’s certainly an acquired taste. But an audience that’s young enough to appreciate this sort of thing, is unlikely to have £50,000 to spend on a car like this. Still, the interior add-ons, including AMG performance seats and an Alcantara-style wheel, are welcome and ever-so-slightly more tasteful. Despite some appealing detailing, the cabin can’t shake off the A-Class-inspired architecture, with a button-heavy console and tacked-on screen that isn’t nearly as well-resolved as Merc’s newer designs. Space isn’t brilliant, either, with the chunky front seats making legroom pretty miserly for anyone forced to spend time in the back. • Best crossovers available Given it’s a jacked-up hatchback capable of out-sprinting a Porsche 911 Carrera, one thing this facelift doesn’t need is more power. And besides, the 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine was boosted from 355bhp to 376bhp for the 2016 model year anyway. But to make the most of that, AMG has made the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox’s top five ratios even shorter, aiding acceleration and reducing shift times. While it has always been undeniably rapid, the new car rips through its cogs with real ferocity, and our car’s AMG Performance exhaust livens up the four-cylinder note with some well-judged pops and crackles on the overrun. Image 4 of 16 Image 4 of 16 Drop the drive selector back into its more docile settings and the powertrain becomes more civilised, but it never really settles down to a refined cruise. Road noise is ever-present at motorways speeds, while the sharp throttle and highly-strung gearbox can make town driving more of a chore than it perhaps needs to be. The ride is just about acceptable, though, an while it feels firm and unsettled on poor surfaces, it’s more forgiving than the setup on the A 45 hatchback. It manages to disguise the extra ride height, too, feeling flat and agile in the bends, while the four-wheel drive system and a new locking front differential means the amount of grip on offer is staggering. It’s ultimately no more engaging or fun than hot hatchbacks like the Ford Focus RS, which costs £20,000 less. And that’s our biggest issue with the GLA 45. In Yellow Night Edition form it retails at more than £53,000, which is well into Porsche Macan territory. Whichever way you cut it, that’s by far the more complete proposition. 3 It’s fast and furious, but the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45’s storming pace and prodigious grip isn’t enough to overlook its flaws. Hot hatchback rivals offer more entertainment for much less money, while those who really want an SUV are better served with the roomier and plusher Porsche Macan. We’d avoid the Yellow Night Edition due to its big price hike, too.
