Day 8. February 6, 2020. Owaka to Invercargill (the long way). 275km
Woke up and commenced packing. When staying at a place for more than one night, most of the gear and clothes get unpacked so it takes the better part of 45' to reorganize and repack then reload and secure the gear in and on top of the bike. It was about 50° this AM so left a polartec layer to soften the chill and a perusal of the NZTA government site showed the southern route directly west to Invercargill was open. Yeah! We rode out about 8:15 and cruised on what was now a somewhat familiar scenic ride westward. We made it to Papatowai and once again, as we saw yesterday, there was a police car in the road. Immediately the pit of your stomach churns. Having checked out and a reservation awaiting in Invercargill for the next three nights along with the Burt Monro rally fun all contributed to some anxiety that we might not be able to make it happen. Every other thought was about the more than a meter of rain which fell in 48 hours earlier this week and where and how would ALL that water make its way south. But the NZTA site said the road was open! The officer was very nice and explained that we needed to return to Owaka and make a left turn at the Lumber Jack (last night's tasty dinner location). Then we'd proceed over a gravel road through the Owaka valley and up to Clinton and head west to Mataura en route to Invercargill. We rode back the 27km to Owaka and then proceeded through the scenic valley and westward to Mataura. We should've been more suspicious of the lack of bikes within 150 km of Invercargill. As we pulled into the central area of Mataura the main Hwy 93 was completely blocked by sand bags at least 4' high. Although the road was dry, it was apparent that floodwaters had swirled there in the recent past. We saw three other bikers who approached us and explained that they weren't able to bypass the flooding in town. It's heartening to wake up to What's App messages complaining/wondering what happened since I fairly abruptly ended my blog as I was just too tired to continue. (Richard!) At least I know someone is reading... I don't write this for others, mostly for myself to have a record of these adventures so I don't forget the little and interesting things that happen on a daily basis. One of the daily pics shows the sand bag barrier on route 93 and the fire/rescue folks who described for us the next route to take to attempt to get to Invercargill. We rode again eastward on the opposite direction of our destination to Clinton and found the only cafe open for a quick drink/bite and a bathroom break. At Clinton we noticed one thing right away. For the first time in days we were on a busy road (Hwy 1) and it was steadily streaming trucks and more interestingly to me, bikes! Now, with a brief stop, we joined the flow again towards the elusive Invercargill after a 170km double detour. At least we got some fantastic scenery and rainbows so no complaints.
The highway from Clinton to the next town of Gore has prompted a humorous gesture by the NZ transportation agency. They have a sign as you depart Clinton heading the 44kms to Gore that proclaims it the "Presidential Highway". 😆 Very funny! Gore was surprisingly large with loads of bikes getting gas and finding one of the dozens and dozens of restaurants there to eat. We continued on after passing over the Mataura River bridge where the railroad trestle immediately downstream was nearly submerged. The road continues along the river and was closed due to flooding so all traffic was diverted about 30km on a series of more western roadways and eventually we met up with 1 again for the half hour ride remaining into Invercargill. Mother Nature opened up on us for a while but only hard for 15-20 minutes and it abated just prior to entering town. We rode in by the much discussed transport museum and into center city. We got an apartment in a Quest building right next to the central traffic circle in the town's center. Fantastic location. Not a full service hotel, but a building of nicely appointed apartments with a front desk that is manned for check-in hours only. Only a couple blocks from both the Classic Motorcycle Mecca museum and then the other way to the famous and historic E. Hyde hardware store. The store that is not only huge but houses Burt Monro's workshop (behind glass), loads of vintage bikes on display interspersed with their merchandise, a full Indian dealership within and of course anything you could think of to purchase! The motorcycle museum was also visited and did not disappoint. Over 300 very significant bikes of marques that extended beyond my knowledge base. They also have in their basement a collection from a NZ motorcycle racer named George Begg who became a car designer (he didn't race the cars). He made stunning and well known cars which won races around the world. We decided to then ride out to the official rally site towards the beach. About 9 km to Oreti Beach. There was a tent and a steady line of people filling out registrations. I opted for the $60NZ rally pass which provides access to the rally site which includes camping and the vendor and food tents as well as evening entertainment tents. It also provides a 50% discount on all rally event tickets which are normally $20NZ (less than $13). I bought all the remaining event tickets. Drag races today, beach racing tomorrow, Saturday's sprint races and speedway races ending with Sunday's street races.
We toured the motorcycle safety tent and picked up some safety swag (earplugs, visor cleaning cloth, kickstand pad) and were then drawn into a discussion with a researcher from Australia who is trying to promote two things. One was a geometric design that allows urethane to be produced into a much more flexible design than the D30 armor. It is much more ventilated, flexible and lighter than the armor used by most manufacturers. He had printed it up on his 3D printer and it slowly crushes under pressure. Made great sense to me, hopefully more companies will adopt this. Also he was promoting "MotoCAP". This is a way of testing all motorcycle protective gear in three modes (abrasion, impact and a third one involving energy dispersion that I can't remember now that I'm typing this the next day!) in the same way that cars in the USA get a crash rating, clothing would all be ranked and consumers would be informed about which items perform well in which modes for their information. This guy is conducting the tests on various items. He did say that the Klim Badlands jacket (one version heavier than the Latitude I wear) was the best textile jacket they had tested to date since he saw me wearing my Klim. We strolled through the entertainment tent which was largely empty save for a stage and an official merchandise vendor. We got in line and bought a couple items to remember this event by in the future. There was also a food tent with 5 food trucks set up to deliver to campers and anyone wanting some unhealthy treats while on site. Who am I to talk! 😉 The drag races we're getting ready to start at 6 or so it said on the ticket so we rode the short distance over to Teretonga race track. They have a gravel road that connects the rally campgrounds directly to the track area so the rally campers don't need to put a helmet on for the short ride to watch the race. We strolled through the paddock area and saw a large diversity in the bikes. Some modified Hayabusas, some extended swing arm bikes with wheelie bars behind and some 150cc Vespa scooters rusting out! The drags were sponsored by Harley and we met the Harley agent in our apartment/hotel as she unloaded flags destined to the track event we were now attending. Speaking of unhealthy foods, we both decided to support the local netball team by purchasing a sausage from them for $2NZ. What a delicious bargain. Complete with Cole slaw, cooked onions and mustard and wrapped by a piece of bread. Best deal ever. The track was not really that organized. I don't think the first racers went off the line until 6:45 and it was not warm but the setting sun kept the hard chill away. Maybe it was 56° but very windy. In fact they discussed shortening the 1/4 mile distance due to the risk of blowing racers across the track but they kept it at the standard length. The races were fun to watch. Especially the unmodofied and less experienced riders with incredibly powerful machines that had difficulty keeping their front ends on the pavement. One guy went nearly vertical and somehow managed to save it! A grizzled biker with a nearly as grizzled brown duster unloaded his brown duffel from his shoulders and spent the time smoking hand rolled cigarettes by us. There was also a Maori with full face tattoo art by us. And some rubes as well. (Rich urban bikers) Varied bikes and diverse crowd. A little bit of everything here and lots of eye candy. Even saw a "new" Triumph Rocket 3 R down the street today. The guy should've cleaned it up! It was showing loads of dirt from riding in the rain. I just picked up my new Triumph Rocket 3 TFC two days before departure. I had placed a deposit on it when they announced over 6 months ago and I am very impressed with that machine... 🤩 Ah, I digress.
With the sun setting on the Twilight event, we did decide to leave before it was over after standing for more than 2 hours (no bleachers/seats) and the cold setting in. We found a mini market to get a few essentials for the apartment and headed back to town. After some vino and snacks we meandered down the street to find a cafe that was part of a hotel and we enjoyed a mushroom pizza and a beer before the day caught up with me and I was unable to put much down on the blog before nodding off.

Day 3 Sunday – Launch Day!
Well, we got there and back again with no great hiccups so I will progressively try to post a lot of what I have written (and some pics) over the next few days.
The group dinner was pleasant enough last night, really just a bit of an ice-breaker (so to speak) with an outline of the options leading up to us setting off to the wide blue yonder on the morrow.
We were booked on the tour to Curio Bay so were breakfasted, checked out of the hotel, with most of our gear taken direct to the ship, and on the bus ready to go before 9am. We were first to board the bus so chose the front seat with much better views of what we were passing as we went along. There had been some damage to the road due to local flooding so we had to take a detour inland and eventually back to the coast to Curio Bay. The drive was a bit over an hour through rich pastoral and agricultural land and I even spotted a few more birds as we went along.
The Bay was quite spectacular with pretty wild seas at the edge of the reef a couple of hundred metres out from the cliff but we walked down to the rocks to what is a petrified forest at the edge of the ocean (I wonder what scared it so much – maybe the wild seas?). The forest is now all completely flat with quite tall trees laying on the beach and you can even see the grain in them. A couple of hundred metres inland was a Living Forest with a 10-minute walking loop that took me almost an hour to navigate. There were lots of birds in there and although I could hear them chirping and whistling, they were very hard to spot in the dense undergrowth. I did see a few and the best were probably the fantails. There were quite a lot of them, mainly in pairs and they came up quite close to us. They danced around and kept fanning their tails – very white and dramatic, zipping from tree to tree only a couple of metres from me. Wonderful.
It was good that I had looked at the Petrified Forest before going to the Living Forest because I went back to the beach on the way back to the bus and the tide had come in and there was nothing to see. It would have been very disappointing for those who did it in reverse order.
Back on the bus and off to Niagara Falls – not quite what we saw last year, but the restaurant was named after a local waterfall – apparently the smallest cascade that can technically be called a waterfall. They say it is only about half a metre high, but that is how it got its name and why our lunch-stop restaurant was called Niagara Falls.
We were then driven back to the hotel to collect the expeditioners who chose not to visit Curio Bay and then we were off to the Port of Bluff and boarding the Spirit of Enderby. We were checked off by Customs and shown to our cabin to get organised and most people gathered on the monkey deck (deck 6) to watch Invercargill disappearing astern.
We then had a briefing that informed us that our entire itinerary had been reversed. We had originally been scheduled to go to Macquarie Island but the Australian Government had quarantined the Island for 14 days due to the coronavirus scare. So they reversed the whole trip (they had to replace all the permits in less than a day) in the hope that the island would be open for business again by the time we got there.
There was another briefing a little later, but I spent an hour in the bridge checking off a few more birds and then it was a safety briefing and the dreaded lifeboat drill – slightly less crowded and unpleasant than the previous ones we have done on previous voyages.
Dinner was next but I was one of quite a few who were feeling seasick and not wanting to eat anything. I had taken my seasickness pills, but it was pretty rough and I was feeling rather seedy. They delayed dinner until we were in the lee of Stewart Island, but quite a few of us were feeling second-rate by then. I had not heard of it before, but Stewart Island is often referred to as New Zealand’s third island – the largest of its off-shore islands and relatively close to the southern shore of the South Island. Is quite accessible, fairly well serviced and regarded as a wildlife haven, despite some (non-human) feral pests.
Everyone was looking forward to an early night, but few people slept much. Heather and I had suffered two bad nights’ sleep in the Hotel and the sea was so rough that just staying in our bunks was a challenge. There was a strong wind blowing and the captain said it was a night of 8 metre swells, sometimes even bigger. I have since spent quite a bit of time in the bridge and it is amazing to see how our little barque surfs the ocean. It is hard to convey the experience, but one second the bow is aiming at the stars as it struggles up the waves, then suddenly the wave is past and the ship as sliding down with the bow apparently destined for its final journey to the bottom of the sea. Suddenly, with perhaps only a metre of freeboard, another wave catches it and up we go again. At other times, we are a little more broadside on to the swell and the ship heels violently to port and obviously we are going to turn turtle – until the wave passes and we rocket to starboard, leaning almost as far that way as we went to port. I guess we are only swinging 20 degrees each way, maybe 30 to port, but we were told that in really rough seas, it can swing 40 degrees each way. (There are some real figures later in the blog that confirm my guesses!) Amazing that our little dot on the ocean takes all this in its stride.

Week 5: books, chocolate, albatrosses, racist penguins, gales and the arsehole of the world
Monday day time found us in killing time as we had lots of plans for wildlife spotting in the evening...but not much for the day. We started off with a walk down to tunnel beach. This was basically a giant hill that ended in a tunnel hewn into the rock by a local landowner so his daughters could bathe in private on the beach. When we eventually found the tunnel (not signed, which was weird since they’d made a tourist attraction out of it), it lead to some rocks with huge waves smashing onto them. I personally would be more worried about drowning than prying eyes, but what do I know, I’m not a Victorian patriarch?
After that we headed into Dunedin. I wanted to get rid of a few second hand books (normally I just leave them in Airbnbs, but the huge cost of books here meant I was going to full resale value) so we picked a second hand bookstore. Sometimes places pleasingly match up to stereotypes. The place was crammed floor to ceiling with shelves overflowing with books, interspersed with the occasional handwritten labour. There were more books stacked in boxed on the floor and in piles on the counter. An assistant wrapping books in brown paper called over the owner, who was exactly the sort of cheery slightly rumpled looking older man you’d expect to be running a second-hand bookshop. Despite clearly not needing any more books, he did buy mine and whilst I promised Marcel, the pack mule of our holiday that I would only buy as many books as I sold, I lied. Headed out with a joyful stack some time later.
Our next stop was to buy expensive fancy chocolate, as dammit, I have needs and I was dying for a decent hot chocolate and some squares of good quality dark chocolate. They did sell me a good hot chocolate, and a couple of nice bars, but refused to part with any of their pulverised chocolate bits for hot chocolate as they are apparently barely meeting their own demand. Clearly they did not fully appreciate that I was a hot chocolate addict in distressing withdrawal.
Stocked up with chocolate and books we headed home for a bit, before the evening entertainment. This was first off albatrosses. I’ve wanted to see one for ages, and luckily outside Dunedin is the only mainland colony of them. The only problem with where they nest is it’s a great spot for all sorts of birds (apparently birds like it windy) and there are about a million seagulls there, one of which shat on my face just as we were going into the distant albatross hide to watch them. Not cool. At least being shat on by an albatross would have some rarity value. We did get to see them soaring about and lots of teenage albatrosses flirting, so that sort of made up for not being able to wash my face for 45 minutes.
Afterwards we had an hour to kill before going to see the penguins come home. We had ambitions of a walk, but the wind was up, the rain and sea gull poo was falling and the cafe had nachos. In a moment of madness, I saw a pattern for knitting a cute little penguin toy in the shop and decided to buy it and make one for my niece. I did not realise until later that the pattern was a 7 page long nightmare and the wool they sold me, alpaca, appears to have been spun by a sadist to be as hard to knit with as is possible (and I’m a mediocre knitter at best). And it turns out the designer was also responsible for the golliwog pattern that the shop was surprisingly still selling (apparently NZ hasn’t heard of the 21st century) so I also accidentally funded a racist.
The penguins (little blue this time) like to come back home at dusk in herds. So we all piled onto a platform overlooking the windswept bay (I wore two jumpers, Kate’s ski jacket and my windbreaker over the top to give you an indication of how nice NZ summers are) and waited. French tourists angrily shushed all the children (I love French tourists, they always vocalise what my grumpy inner voice is thinking). Then we waited some more. But then they all came in a series of waves, which was pretty cool, although up close they look a bit like rats swarming over the rocks when they lean forward. But up close they are cute. They all had a bit of a freak out because a gull was sitting on the ground near their path home. Apparently this is not because gulls bully them (surprising since I had gulls down as the arseholes of the avian world) but apparently because there isn’t normally a gull sitting there and they don’t like change.
Lots of them had built their nests under the platform we were on, so after they had reunited with their chicks, there were lots of quite cool calls going on from under the platform- it was nearly dark by then and their calls sounded a bit like the noises the monster/alien makes in a horror movie when the teenagers aren’t yet sure whether it’s friendly or not. So the sounds you hear about 2 seconds before the first teenager gets eaten.
The next day our final destination was Invercargill, which Keith Richards visited and described as the arsehole of the world. So we decided to make a few nature stops along the way. First off, we took a walk along to a lighthouse at a place called Nugget Point. This was on an extremely empty bit of coastline and so it was quite a pretty drive, and then we walked along the lighthouse. The seas below were incredibly clear so you could see lots of seals diving about and generally having a good time in the water (they always make being a seal look like so much fun). End point was pretty windy, but this is NZ, so you get used to that.
Our next stop was a place called Surat bay, which Marcel told me was famous for sealions. I was dubious. We walked about 20m and found a male sealion blocking our path, dozing in the sun.
Then another huge sealion came out of the sea, furious that another male was enjoying life and chased it away.
Then as we walked along the path a third sealion swam just next to the shoreline, watching us suspiciously. About 30 seconds after seeing the first sea lion, we saw a huge one lying on the beach chucking sand over itself to cool down. A smaller sea lion tried to sneak onto the beach for a nap, waking up our big boss who was furious and again chased him away. At this point I apologised to Marcel about my sealion scepticism.
We kept walking along the beach for a couple of miles, seeing more male sea lions and one very sad looking lady sea lion.
And then I posed with a sealion to embarrass Marcel
We then crossed the headland to the next beach- for the sole reason that it was called Cannibal bay and that amused me. Incidentally this was the first day of the new year where it didn’t rain at some point. Didn’t realise when they said NZ was like the UK that they meant in terms of rained out summers.
As we drove back from the beach through the nearest tiny town (Owaka), I insisted Marcel stop so I could get a picture of teapot land.
I love weird roadside attractions like this. Marcel stayed in the car, and planned our last walk, which was a brief detour to some falls. With all these walks, by the time we reached Invercargill we were too tired to leave our rather dated motel, so we made dinner there. As a result, I can’t really tell you if Keith Richards was right or not...
Having said that, the next morning we were forced to have Starbucks coffees for breakfast as we couldn’t find a hipster coffee joint, so it’s clearly not that great a town. We stocked up on some more cherries from a roadside vendor and headed out with a similar plan to make lots of stops and have lots of walks along the way. Our first stop, gemstone beach, was fairly badly timed with the tide as it had come up leaving about 10m of accessible beach. We moved on to a lookout point. It was just that- a point. No accessible walk. We consulted the map. It stated there was a beach called Bluecliffs that sounded like we could walk on it. We drove to where google said the access road was. No road. We kept going, consulting a map, until it seemed like we might be only a few fields from it. We crawled under some electric fencing. We headed through some blatantly private property. Eventually we reached what google thought was the road- a completely flooded and overgrown mud track and beyond that a shingly beach that was incredibly hard to walk on, so we chucked pebbles at the sea for a bit and then gave up on that stretch of coastline.
Our next stop was Manapouri, a small town on the outskirts of Lake Manapouri. It had one open restaurant, which was a mexican burrito place in a converted church, run by some very friendly Punjabis, which was unexpected for a one-horse town. After lunch we wandered along the very windswept lakeshore and then took a less windy walk down the river to see where the river taxis went as we had planned the next day to take one in order to go for a hike.
Our final stop for the night was an airbnb in Te Anau, a neighbouring bigger town where we could stock up on essentials (for me, Green and Blacks chocolate to make hot chocolate with).
The next day dawned rainy. We waited for a break in the clouds but decided to walk a little closer to home so headed to the lakeside rather than the further away river taxis. By the time we’d driven to the car park at the start of the walk it was pouring with rain. We turned around and went home. About half an hour later the sun came out again and so we went for round two of operation “try and have a walk”. Luckily the weather held and we had a gorgeous hike through the forest. By the time we were done we were fairly starving and headed to a cafe, which served us with cakes that were at least 90% sugar. Even I couldn’t finish mine it was so sweet.
On Friday we’d booked onto a boat trip on the Milford Sound, which was about two hours away. We decided to head out a couple of hours early so we could stop off at a few points of interest on the way. First off was mirror lakes, which were pretty disappointing as it was one of the many, many occasions in NZ when it was raining, which sort of ruins their reflective quality.
Then we had a walk by another lake through some sheltering trees. By this stage I was looking a little anxiously at the time as whilst the boat offered a barbecue, as a vegetarian I wanted to stop at the cafe beforehand. Marcel insisted we had time to visit the Humboldt falls. These were down a very long gravel track with regular sign off for ominously named things like “deadman’s track", “historic grave" and “dead horse bog". At this point Marcel realised that the sound was further away then he thought and it was later than we thought, so we had to gun it through. Which is fairly hard to do as the roads are small and there is a very long one way tunnel, where you have to wait your turn at the traffic lights. Whilst we waited we were visited by a begging kea. Apparently they bite tourists a lot. Since I had no intention of sharing the meagre food supplies in our car as we definitely had no time to visit a cafe at this stage, I was safe.
We arrived just in time for our boat- which thankfully had a vegetarian option or I would have spent the voyage glaring at Marcel. Thoroughly recommend going with the Go Orange cruise at 5.30pm as it is the only boat that goes out that late and there were 14 tourists, including us, on our very large boat. We picked the top deck, which was open, and pretty much had it to ourselves apart from when some Swedish tourists briefly came up. It is quite pretty out there and the day improved as it ended so that by the end of the journey there was even a glint of sun from behind the clouds.
We drove back making several more stops to see various waterfalls and wild lupins (which look lovely but are apparently a pest as everything cute and/or colourful is in NZ).
We also waited forever at a red light before the giant one way tunnel and before it went green they turned the signals off for the night. Luckily there isn’t much traffic on the road at that time so there wasn’t any reversing needed to make it through the tunnel safely.
I have contributed very little to our trip planning because I’m lazy but the one thing I really did want to do is go glacier kayaking at Mount Cook. Mount Cook is kind of an arse to get to, so stage one was driving up through Queenstown. We stopped for lunch but it was annoyingly full of tourists so we quickly headed on.
As we drove towards it, it got more and more windy. By the time we reached a nearby lake it was so windy that at the lookout point I had to get Marcel to open my door from the outside because I couldn’t push it open against the force of the wind. Then the rain started. And not the light drizzle type.
The only accommodation left available in Mount Cook was a pretty expensive fairly giant hotel, so after checking in we headed to a much cheaper cafe to overlook the wind and rain-lashed mountains opposite and debate our chances of the tour actually going ahead. If the weather is bad, they cancel it. Whilst we had basically come there in order to kayak, I was concerned that there might be a difference of opinion on what weather was acceptable to kayak in. In my mind, this category does not include any degree of rain. I feared hardy outdoor types who owned waterproof trousers might be willing to head out in conditions I very much wasn’t.
In the end though, the rain wasn’t a problem. When we woke up, for once the skies were really quite clear but the winds were gale-force so the trip was cancelled. After a brief trip to the alpine visitors centre to look at their crazy photos of mountaineers of times passed, we decided to walk to the glacier lake instead.
As I have a design flaw by which I get earache when it’s windy, I found myself buying some sort of weird outdoors thing that could work as a trekking headband/hat/balaclava etc. I fear I’m on the slippery slope to owning waterproof trousers and knowing what crampons are.
The walk to the lake was beautiful, although we did occasionally get pelted with pebbles such was the strength of the wind, and when we got there, I couldn’t make it up the ridge to the best lookout spot because the wind kept blowing me over. But it was beautiful and the icebergs were all blown into the corner nearest the walking track anyway, so we saw them for free without having to paddle about.
After this we drove down to Wanaka, taking another windswept stop at Lake Pukaki on the way.
Wanaka took longer than we’d though so we both arrived starving and grumpy. We had our picnic lunches we’d prepared for the kayak trip and we’d intended to eat them by the lake, which has a magic tree growing out of it (it’s just a willow that grows slightly underwater. People find this weirdly exciting). Because the winds were still super gail-forcy, we ate it in our gently rocking car.
We then drove to the nearby Clutha river to try and have a bit of a walk. We didn’t hold out much hope though that the wind wouldn’t rapidly drive us back to our car. Amazingly though the bank offered a lot of protection from the wind and with the sun out, it finally felt a bit like summer, wandering along the banks of a crystal clear river with the sun blazing down. So that was a lovely end to a somewhat grey and rainy week!

Quality of Food and Ingredients
A good restaurant is defined by the quality of its food and ingredients. The taste, freshness, and presentation of the dishes are crucial aspects that determine whether a restaurant is good or not. The chefs should be skilled in their craft and use high-quality ingredients to create flavorful and memorable dishes.
A good restaurant will prioritise sourcing fresh and locally sourced ingredients, as well as using sustainable practices. Furthermore, attention to detail in the cooking techniques and the ability to balance flavours are essential qualities that make a restaurant stand out. Ultimately, a good restaurant will leave its patrons craving for more with every bite.
Menu Variety and Options
A good restaurant understands the importance of offering a diverse menu that caters to different tastes and dietary preferences. It should provide a wide variety of options, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other special dietary choices. The menu should be well-curated, featuring a balance of familiar and innovative dishes.
Additionally, seasonal menus or daily specials can add excitement and freshness to the dining experience. A good restaurant will also provide clear and detailed descriptions of the dishes, allowing customers to make informed choices. Whether it's a small bistro or a large-scale restaurant in Invercargill NZ, the menu variety and options play a significant role in describing its quality.

Regular sanitisation and adherence to food safety regulations are essential to ensure the well-being of the customers. A clean and hygienic restaurant in Hamilton NZ, reflects the commitment of the establishment to provide a safe and healthy dining environment.
Pricing and Value for Money
While good food and excellent service are crucial, the pricing and value for money also play a significant role in describing a good restaurant. A good restaurant will have positive reviews and a strong reputation both online and offline. A good restaurant will actively manage its online presence, respond to reviews, and use feedback to improve its offerings. A strong online reputation is a testament to the quality of the restaurant and can help attract new customers.
Personal Preferences and Experiences
It is important to note that describing a good restaurant can also be subjective, as personal preferences and experiences play a role. What one person may consider a good restaurant might not resonate with another. Factors such as individual taste preferences, dietary restrictions, cultural backgrounds, and personal expectations can influence how a restaurant is described.
It is essential for patrons to keep an open mind and be willing to explore different culinary experiences. While the elements mentioned above contribute to a good restaurant, it is ultimately the individual's perception and experience that define what they consider to be good.

Your Guide to Finding the Best Restaurant for Every Occasion
When it comes to dining out, finding the perfect restaurant can elevate any occasion from ordinary to extraordinary. Whether you're celebrating a special milestone, catching up with friends, or simply treating yourself to a delicious meal, choosing the best restaurant can make all the difference.
But with so many options available, how do you narrow down your choices? Fear not! In this guide, we'll explore some tips and tricks to help you find the best restaurant in Invercargill for every occasion.
Know Your Preferences
Before embarking on your quest for the best restaurant, take some time to reflect on your preferences. Do you have a particular cuisine in mind? Are you looking for a casual or fine dining experience?
Knowing what you're in the mood for will help you narrow down your options and find a restaurant that aligns with your tastes.
Consider the Occasion
The best restaurant in Hamilton for a romantic date night might not be the same as the ideal spot for a family celebration or a quick lunch with coworkers. Consider the occasion and the atmosphere you're aiming for.
For intimate gatherings, you might prefer a cozy, dimly lit restaurant with a romantic ambience. For larger groups, a lively restaurant with a diverse menu and spacious seating might be more suitable.
Read Reviews and Recommendations
One of the easiest ways to find the perfect restaurant in town is by reading reviews and seeking recommendations from friends, family, or fellow food enthusiasts.
Websites and apps provide valuable insights into the quality of food, service, and ambience offered by various restaurants. Pay attention to both positive and negative reviews to get a well-rounded understanding of what to expect.
Explore Local Favourites
Sometimes, the best restaurant isn't the trendiest or most high-profile establishment—it's the hidden gem tucked away in a neighbourhood corner or off the beaten path. Don't be afraid to explore local favourites and lesser-known eateries, as they often offer unique dishes and authentic experiences you won't find elsewhere.
Ask locals for recommendations, or take a stroll through your neighbourhood to discover hidden culinary treasures.
Consider Dietary Restrictions
When selecting a restaurant, it's essential to consider any dietary restrictions or preferences you or your dining companions may have. A restaurant for a vegan diner will offer a diverse selection of plant-based options, while a gluten-free diner will appreciate restaurants with clearly labelled menu items and knowledgeable staff.
Many restaurants today cater to various dietary needs, so don't hesitate to inquire about special accommodations.
Trust Your Instincts
At the end of the day, the best restaurant Invercargill is the one that leaves you feeling satisfied and delighted with your dining experience. Trust your instincts and intuition when choosing a restaurant—if something feels off or doesn't meet your expectations, don't hesitate to explore other options.
Dining out is about more than just the food; it's about creating memorable moments and enjoying the company of loved ones.
Summing It Up
Finding the best restaurant in Hamilton for every occasion may take some trial and error, but with the right approach, you can discover culinary gems that will delight your taste buds and leave you craving more.

Factors to Consider When Selecting a Restaurant:
Location and Accessibility
Consider the location of the restaurant and whether it's easily accessible for all attendees. If some guests will be driving, is there ample parking available? If using public transportation, is the restaurant located near a bus or train station? Keep in mind that choosing a restaurant Invercargill nz that is too far away may discourage some attendees from attending.
Ambiance and Atmosphere
The ambience and atmosphere of a restaurant can set the tone for your meeting or event. If you're hoping to have a relaxed and casual conversation, a loud, busy restaurant may not be the best option. On the other hand, if you're looking to impress clients, a fine dining restaurant with an elegant atmosphere may be more appropriate.
Menu Selection and Dietary Accommodations:
Make sure the restaurant you choose offers a menu with options that will appeal to your guests. Consider any dietary restrictions or allergies that attendees may have and choose a restaurant that offers accommodations for these needs.
Service Quality and Attentiveness:
The quality of service at a restaurant can make a huge impact on your experience. Choose a restaurant Hamilton NZ with attentive and knowledgeable staff who can help guide you through the menu and provide recommendations.
Noise Level and Privacy Options
Consider the noise level of the restaurant and whether it offers any private dining options. This is especially important if you're planning a business meeting or event where sensitive information will be discussed.
Types of Restaurants Ideal for Business Dining:
1. Fine Dining Establishments: Fine dining restaurants are a great option for more formal business meetings and events. These establishments typically offer an elegant ambience, exceptional service, and a more upscale menu.
2. Mid-Range Restaurants with Private Rooms: Mid-range restaurants with private rooms are a great option for small to medium-sized business meetings. These restaurants can offer a more intimate setting while still providing a diverse menu selection.
3. Casual Eateries with Quiet Corners: Casual eateries with quiet corners are a great option for more relaxed business meetings. These establishments tend to be less formal but still offer a diverse menu and a quieter atmosphere.
Best Practices for Making Reservations:
1. Timing Considerations: When making a reservation for a business meal, make sure to book well in advance to ensure availability. Additionally, consider the time of day and whether it's appropriate for the type of meeting you're having.
2. Knowing Your Guests' Preferences: When making a reservation, be sure to ask attendees if they have any specific dietary restrictions or preferences. This will help ensure that everyone is accommodated and happy with the restaurant's choice.
3. Confirming Details Beforehand: Finally, be sure to confirm all details with the restaurant before the day of your meeting or event. This includes the time, date, number of attendees, and any dietary restrictions.
Tips for Ensuring Smooth Business Dining Experiences:
1. Arriving Early to Greet Guests: Arriving early to greet guests can help set the tone for a successful business meeting. This shows that you are prepared and organised and can help attendees feel more comfortable.
2. Handling Payment Discreetly: When it comes time to pay the bill, be sure to handle payment discreetly. This can help ensure that attendees feel comfortable and that the focus stays on the meeting itself.
3. Avoiding Distractions During the Meal: Finally, do your best to avoid distractions during the meal. This means putting away your phone and avoiding any other activities that may take away from the meeting or event.
Conclusion:
Selecting the right restaurant Invercargill nz for business dining can be a daunting task, but with the right considerations and best practices, you can ensure a successful and enjoyable experience for all attendees. Keep in mind the factors we've discussed, and don't hesitate to ask for advice or recommendations from others in your industry.
