Happy enlists the guys to help with something he found behind the shop.

"Yes Happy, it's kitten season and I'm up to my eyeballs so please make it quick."

Happy sighed and waved at Tig to hurry up with the hot pack, "I found ginger kittens behind the shop, they still have their cords and mum didn't come back. Do you have spare supplies? The Club will look after them and we'll pay for everything, all you have to do is bring the stuff."

A wave of relief came over you, "we have plenty, I'll be there as soon as I can with everything you'll need, how many are there?"

Tig handed the hot pack to Happy, having rushed into the kitchen to shove some rice in a sock to keep them warm, his hands steady as he brushed the smallest kitten with a warm, just damp, super soft toothbrush, "three, they're not premature, just little."

You nodded, "I'll bring the incubator anyway, see you soon."

Happy smiled, "I love you."

You chuckled, "I love you too, and keep Juice away from them, the last time he got his hands on bottle babies they ended too up fat."

By the time you got there, they were huddled around the tiny kittens, fighting over whose turn it was to brush their little bodies. You placed the incubator on the table with an eye roll, "hey, there will be plenty of time for that, you all need to listen to me right now."

Opie looked up at you from his seat, the kitten on his lab meowing as the brushing stopped.

"Alright, here I have kitten formula, probiotics since they didn't get mother's milk, an incubator and the supplies you'll need for it, a microwavable warmer, syringes, bottles and miracle nipples, a purring fluffy cat doll, a scale and all the paperwork to track how much they eat and how much weight they have put on. Have I forgotten anything?"

Happy looked at the table, "no."

You nodded, "do you all know what you're doing or do I need to show you?"

Happy shook his head, "I know what I'm doing and I can show the guys that don't. You're already busy, go back to work."

You smiled, "I love you so much." You looked at the wriggly little things on their laps, "they are very cute and if I stay any longer I won't be able to leave, please give them lots of kisses for me."

Happy stood up and pecked you, "of course. Off you go now."

You gave them a wave and walked off, Happy turned to his friends and started giving out instructions. "Someone needs to make the formula, all the instructions are on the side. Only make enough for two feeds, then bring it back here." Bobby shot up and gathered all the supplies then Happy started again, turning to Juice, "Juicy, set up the incubator, you remember how to do that right?"

Juice's eyes went wide but he nodded, "yep." He picked up the machine. It looked like a fancy clear bread box with a cover and tube to attach a bottle of distilled water to keep the humidity up. Juice did his best to pile the blankets on top and take it all in one trip, Happy shaking his head as he went.

Jax's hand was still busy brushing one of the kittens when he spoke up, "I'll put a feeding schedule together."

Happy raised his eyebrows, "you think I forget what happened last time, you're a kitten hog, I'll do it."

Chibs chuckled, "you're no better, brother."

Happy glared at him, "find, we'll go around the table, there's enough of them to go around."

Before Opie could protest, unwilling to hand over the kitten in his lap, Bobby came back with the warmed formula. Happy's voice was gruff, "I'll go first, I got to make sure you all know what you're doing."

They all wandered into the office and Jax and Chibs placed the kittens they were holding into the incubator while Opie handed his to Happy, the men gathering around while Happy drew up the warm milk. He placed the kitten on the scale and waved to Boddy to write the number down, then picked and the kitten and grabbed a tissue rubbing it on the kitten's butt, his voice soft as he spoke, "that's a big poo for such a tiny kitten, are you hungry little one?"

The meow was tiny, barely a squeak as Happy placed the kitten on his lap on its belly, his finger gently over its throat so he could tell if it was swallowing and tapped its lip with the rubber nipple, sighing in relief as the kitten accepted it.

His friends looked on as he started to talk, "you got to go real slow when they're this little, one drop at a time so make sure you use a new syringe every time.

Tig rolled his eyes, "we know brother. Never feed a cold kitten, never turn them on their back when you're feeding them, use a tissue to rub their butts so they go to the toilet then weigh them, write the number down and feed them, write down how much their eaten then weigh them again. We've done this before."

Tig went to take a kitten but Jax stopped him, "we're going around the table, it's not your turn." Jax took one kitten in each hand and handed one to Opie before they both went through the process of feeding them while everyone stood around and watched.

The kitten pulled away from Happy first and he grabbed another tissue, wiping its dirty face, "was that good, are you full?" The kitten let out another tiny meow as Happy weighed it then lifted it to his lips and kissed its forehead, "all better now, we'll see you again soon." He placed the kitten on the warm pad in the incubator, Jax and Opie following suit.

They all stood there for a few moments longer before slowly heading back to work, Juice looking into the box with a sad look on his face, "are you sure they don't need more?"

Happy shook his head, "they've all had plenty, you can go next Juicy."

"They need names." Chucky had gone back and forth from the office to the garage every twenty minutes giving them updates.

Happy shook his head, "we won't be able to tell the sex or another few days, we should wait."

"Harley works for a boy or a girl." Kozik's voice was full of hope.

Happy sighed, "no, y/n make me promise not to give her another Harley, every batch of kittens that's come out of here has had one."

Kozik wrinkled his brow, "but it's a good name."

Chibs chuckled, "we'll wait, we can write names on a bit of paper and pull them out of a hat."

They all turned to Jax, who shrugged, "sounds good to me."

Two hours later, they were all back in the office, feeding the kittens again. "They're so little, are you sure we can't carry them around? They'd fit in our pockets." Juice was doing his best to sound conceiving.

"No, they're better off in here where they're in a controlled environment." Once Tig, Bobby and Chibs were done feeding, Happy looked at the weight chart and smiled, "they're gaining weight well, we have to figure out who's taking them home tonight."

They shared a look and Tig threw out his hand for a round of rock, paper, scissors, Chibs eventually winning. He went up to the box and opened it, reaching his hand in and running his finger over the head of the one with the orange stripe on its head, "did ya see that? Ya coming home with me tonight."

Chibs showed up the next day with bags under his eyes and a smile on his face, "they ate every two hours. The wee little things are such darlings I hardly slept."

Chibs passed Happy the feeding sheet and he looked it over, "this is good. We can swap to a bottle now, so it should be a bit easier." Chibs placed in the incubator back in the office then walked into the garage to start his day.

"When did you feed them last?" Juice was always so excited for his turn.

Chibs smiled, "you've got an hour to wait before their next feeding."

Juice looked towards the office, "are you sure they're not hungry?"

Chibs sighed affectionately, "no Juicy, they're not hungry."

As each man arrived at work, they stopped by the office to say hello to the kittens, Opie spending some extra time for cuddles because the smallest kitten meowed just as he walked out. Juice, Kozik and Tig went in for the first feeding of the day, Tig coming out in a huff, "we have to name them now, they need names."

Jax shook his head and went looking for a container and some paper so they could write some names down, "nothing stupid, they need to get adopted and make sure they fit boys and girls." It took them far longer to submit than he would have liked but nevertheless, they were all standing in the middle of the garage ready to pick.

Jax reached in but Opie stopped him, "we should get Chucky to do it, that way no one can say you cheated." He called Chucky and he came running, looking a little guilty.

Tig tilted his head with a smile, "what did you do Chucky?"

Chucky smiled sheepishly, "nothing, they looked sad so I cuddled them for a while."

Tig waved his hand, "come over here and pull three bits of paper out of the tub."

The other watched on with bated breath as he read the name out, "Cheese, Limoncello and Peanut. The little one should be Peanut, the one with the orange stripe on its head should be Cheese and the lighter one should be Limoncello." Chucky looked around, worried that he wasn't supposed to go that far but the other nodded.

"That works." Happy was a man of few words but he always got the point across.

It took three more days for them to be big enough to find out who was a male and female and each second they waited only served to build the excitement, "it looks like Peanut and Cheese are girls and Limoncello is a boy."

They had swapped them to a playpen that morning and had moved in into a quiet corner of the garage but that only made it harder for everyone to work because the kittens would meow for food and cuddles every second that they weren't asleep.

"Maybe we can keep them as shop cats? There's always someone staying in the dorms so they'll never be alone and it's not like y/n will say no to not having three more animals to adopt out, plus, it keeps them together." Juice sounds so hopeful.

They all looked at Jax who rolled his eyes, "I'm not going to even bother putting it up for a vote, we all know what the answer is going to be. Three cats are a lot to look after so we'll have to pitch in, the best food, the best vet care and clean litter trays, we can take turns." Jax sighed, "and they're not allowed in the chapel, I don't want them taking over."

The next feeding fell right in the middle of church, now that they were learning to walk, it a pastime for the guys to watch them waddle around and fall over. The plastic tub was in the middle of the table, Cheese and Limoncello having already been fed meant Happy was left to fill Peanut's belly.

He finished up and placed her on the table to grab a tissue to wipe her face but she had just started to walk and waddled the three wobbly steps and flopped herself onto the sound block that Jax slammed the gavel into. Jax looked at Happy and smiled, "leave her there, she's adorable."

The kittens grew more independent as time went on, soon enough they were being weaned off milk and onto wet food. Happy sat there despondent as they walked through their food and then all over the floor. Chibs walked in with smile on his face, "what got you so sad brother, they're only learning?"

Happy sighed, "they're meant to be apex predators and they can't even eat." He looked at the packet, "tuna flavoured kitten food. I'm a terrible cat mother."

Chibs chuckled, "what did y/n say?"

Happy shook his head, "that this is normal and that the real fun starts when the meat poops start. I don't know how she does this all the time, they are so tiny and weak and dependant. How I am suppose to look after a human child when the time comes when I can teach three cats how to eat."

Chibs sighed, "you'll be fine."

Right on cue, Peanut sat right in the food and Happy's shoulders fell, "I need to go wash this idiot. God the orange ones are stupid."

Jax grimaced, "there is poop everywhere, how did this happen?"

Happy sighed, "it happens when they move onto solid food, they need a bath."

Tig walked over to the shop sink and started to wash it out, "not in there you idiot, in the dorm. Can someone please bring the baby shampoo, it's in the bag." Happy picked up Cheese and Limoncello while Jax took Peanut and they walked towards the dorm bathroom.

Happy ran the tap with warm water and picked up Cheese, "are you ready." The meow was long and squeaky as he ran her butt under the warm stream.

The meows got more upset as it continued and Tig laughed, "they sound so sad."

Jax chuckled, "don't listen. Limoncello meowed until I picked him up then he fell asleep in my lap. I needed to piss so bad and I couldn't get up because every time I tried to move he'd get all sad."

Happy rinsed Cheese off then handed her to Tig for him to dry her off, "just make sure she's dry then take her back to the pen so she can stay warm."

Tig lifted her to his lips and pressed his lips to her forehead, "come on little kitty, you can stay with me while Mr Grumpy washes your siblings."

"Are you sure they be alright? They're so little." Tig sounded worried.

"Yes, their ten weeks and one kilo or two pounds, they'll be fine. Someone will need to take them home and stay with them for the next few days while they recover. It's just a spay and neuter, it's nothing."

Opie wandered over, "I'll take them, the kids are on holiday and they've been begging me to let them come and spend more time with the cats."

You smiled, "wonderful. Everyone sure they've had nothing to eat and drink?" They all nodded, "great, depending on how they go, they will be home either this afternoon or early tomorrow morning. I'll call the moment they are out."

"Alright, here's the official adoption agreement, sign here.

You handed the pen to Happy and he smiled, "thank you little girl, Ope and Jax are in there now converting one of our store rooms into their room. You wanna come and see?"

You sighed, "sure, how much time and money has everyone put into this thing?"

Happy did his best not to smile, "a lot, we even replaced the door with a glass one."

You walked inside and you could hear them walking away. You popped your head around the corner and Jax smiled, "hello darlin, did the paperwork go through?"

You nodded, "yep, they have officially been adopted by Teller-Morrow Automotive Repairs."

He smiled, "thank you, they're in the dorm if you want to say hello."

Happy reached out his hand and you linked your fingers in his as he walked you towards to room. You opened the door and they came running, meowing as you sat on the floor with Happy.

You picked up Limoncello and he nuzzled into your chest, "they got so big."

Happy smiled and shuffled closer to you, looping his arm around your shoulder, "we fed em good."

You chuckled, "you mean Juice fed them half an hour early whenever he could. I saw the logs Hap."

Happy smiled, "their little meows were so sad, it's not his fault he couldn't say no."

You sighed, "it's alright, they have a good home now. I don't have any more to do, I'm happy to help out with their new room."

Happy pressed his lips to your cheek, "that would be great."

The kittens had been great from everyone, turns out a bad day is nothing compared to loud purrs and head bonks. It hadn't taken long for them to get free rein of the Clubhouse, and Jax's rule of them not being allowed in the chapel lasted until they meowed at the door and he let all three of them in himself.

Jax sighed when he saw the open door, there was no point in trying to keep them out of the room, they always managed to open the doors. They all walk in and smiled as they saw Peanut and Cheese lying out like tigers on the table, Peanut's head on her favourite spot on the sound block.

Chibs scratched Cheese behind under the chin and looked around "have you seen Lemon?"

They got their answer as Jax pulled out his chair, Limoncello meowing as his sleep was disturbed. Jax threw his hands up in the air and sighed, "it looks like we're all standing."

Happy shook his head, "you're the only one with a cat on your chair."

Jax smiled, "and we all know that if we're in touching distance of any of those little monsters, we'll never get any business done."

July 22 - University, Zoo, and Tea House

Second blogpost today because I was behind on writing the other one. Don’t forget to scroll down and read yesterday’s post as well.

This morning, a bus took us straight to National Chengchi University, which is one of the top universities in Taiwan. We were given a tour of a dorm building, a library, a makerspace, and a coffee shop on campus. It was very interesting comparing this university to American ones. The library was massive and impressive. We went to their university avenue for lunch. I got a burger with rice buns from Mos Burger, and it was good. Right after lunch, we went to the Taipei Zoo. The first two exhibits that we went right to were the koalas and the pandas. Then, we took the zoo train up the hill and made our way walking to each exhibit down the hill. We first saw a bunch of cool reptiles and amphibians like snakes, lizards, iguanas, frogs, chameleons, alligators, crocodiles, and turtles/tortoises. Then, on the way to see the penguins, we saw one wolf napping in the wolf enclosure. When we got to the penguin enclosure, one of them kept pacing in front of a mirror. Then we saw three different species of bear, a puma/cougar, and a lynx. After that, we saw one of my favorite animals, the otter. There were a pile of otters cuddling, and then we saw one beaver, one red panda, and one bison, each alone. Then, we walked through the bird conservatory and saw so many species of birds. Then in the African section, we saw elephants, hippos, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and camels. Then we saw a porcupine, orangutans, monkeys, a tapir, a kookaburra, a leopard, a tiger, and a great hornbill. After the zoo, we went to the YaoYue Tea House, where our professor made us traditional fragrant tea. The old building and the tea farm landscape were beautiful. I had more xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), and I tried traditional rice cakes at the tea house. Later on, we went out to dinner at a restaurant that had whole ducks and got delicious Cantonese fried rice.

Academic Reflection:

Our professor, Yeh Laoshi, told us that she attended National Chengchi University, so I learned even more from her about the university than I thought I would have. She taught us that chengchi means political science. The library we went to was built in 2019. The makerspace tour guide showed us the workings of the 3D printer and the laser printer. Peter taught us that, unlike the US, the best schools in Taiwan are the public schools, while the private ones aren’t as good. For example, the number one university is probably National Taiwan University, which is public just like Chengchi.

At the zoo, we learned about all of the different animals that we saw. For example, baby koalas consume some of their mother’s excrement for the probiotics. At the tea house, Yeh Laoshi showed use the traditional way of making tea without a tea bag. It involves multiple teapots and instruments. The tea was put into a small teacup that had another teacup on top of it that we were supposed to flip over. I found this very engaging. Yeh Laoshi also explained to us the background of the place that we were at. The name of it in English is cat’s face.

Hello, this is the anon who works at a shelter! I don't know how much this will help, but I've worked with sick cats and there's a few things she could try: If KK looks constipated, it's worth trying to move his back legs (think like riding a bike) or massage the stomach, since movement helps with intestinal blockages. Syringe feeding is definitely the best option for cats who won't eat! You can also water down wet food for that, which helps the cat get more nutrients than just treats. There's over the counter probiotics you can get, but I'd ask the vet before getting any. I'd hesitate to give any advice on what it could be since I'm not a professional, and I haven't seen the cat in person. But I'm rooting for KK and I hope she can figure out what's going on!

I'm happy to hear this because she has began watering down his food to feed him with a syringe. he still seems like he hates it but it has been giving him enough energy to wander around. he still hasn't gone to the bathroom yet other than to pee. and I will let her know about the probiotics, thank you!!

Lately, I’ve gotten the question a lot: are you involved with an animal shelter? Is that your job? I guess I talk about the cats a lot. I’ve been going to Berny’s house every day since Macaroni the Foster Cat arrived because I was helping him give Cotton Candy — that’s Macaroni’s brother — his probiotics, and he was helping me give Macaroni her whole medicine medley — at one point she had to take six different things the poor girl. I don’t understand how she’s still happy to see me. — Berny is the cat guy right now — el señor de los gatos — there seem to be a lot of strays around his neighborhood and they started hanging around his house ever since he started leaving food out for Tuna.

That’s how it all started, I guess. I got a call from Berny asking if I could come over and help him get some kittens out from behind his water tank. The tank was pressed up against a corner of the wall and a couple of kittens — one black and one white — had crawled into the small space between the round surface of the tank and the sharp angle of the corner, and they had been meowing up a storm since they couldn’t climb back up the mostly smooth surfaces. I was in the middle of DMing a D&D session, but after he explained the situation, I apologized to my players and ended the session early. I headed over to Berny’s.

When I got there, using the clothesline tubes, I swung myself up onto the tank — it’s a big tank; it’s taller than I am — and since I am a petite person, carefully slid into the corner with the cats, hoping that they wouldn’t freak out and claw and shred my ankles. They didn’t. They compressed themselves into the tiniest shapes to make room for my feet, and I began the rather difficult task of reaching down for them. I am a petite person, but the space was rather cramped, and I didn’t have enough room to bend down. I folded myself down as best as I could, reaching as low as my arm would go, I maneuvered a cat onto my foot, and I did my best to lift the — thankfully — limp and docile cat up to my hand. We got the black sibling out first, and it scurried away. We got the white sibling out second and Berny caught her and fed her. They hung around his house since he kept leaving tuna and food out for them. The black sibling stopped coming around, but the white sibling became Tuna.

Word of the food surely got around. After Tuna, came others. And after Tuna had kittens, Berny determined to start catching all the regulars to get them fixed. He kept one of Tuna’s kittens and named him Nova. Nova is the tamest and chunkiest of the lot. He likes me because I bring treats and play with him. He makes these big, spectacular jumps after the toy and lands with a sharp exhale that sounds like someone sitting too confidently on a cushioned chair.

Kenny came next. He was a sweet, violet point cat, and I think Berny’s favorite. He stopped coming around about a month ago, which is the raw deal with outdoor cats, especially because he was Nova’s favorite playmate. Nia and Morgana came together and came pregnant. Macaroni and Cotton Candy are Nia’s kittens. I helped re-home them, and thus I was going to help get them fixed, which was when we found out they were not feeding Macaroni well at all. I know it was due to ignorance and no malicious intent, but Macaroni deserves a loving home and all the care in the world.

Besides the regular lot, there is a colony of five feral cats that live in the abandoned house across the street from Berny — there are two adult orange cats, one long-haired black point adolescent, and two fluffy orange kittens. — He started luring them out with food, and last week we managed to trap one of the adults in a crate. We got her spayed, and we’re hoping to catch the rest before they demolish the house completely, as the landowners are rebuilding the whole place in a couple of months. The cat we caught was feral, so we’ll release her. We hope that if we can catch the kittens, though, they might grow tame enough to re-home. One of the orange kittens, Best Boy, likes to play with me when I bring the toy around.

So really, it’s not a job, proper, but it’s meaningful work. I enjoy it.

When we adopted Jasper as an 8 week old kitten 16 years ago, he was sick, but we didn't know it until days later. We called the rescue shelter, they offered an exchange, and informed us he had been scheduled for euthanasia due to ringworm. They didn't treat ringworm due to it taking too long to clear and they had limited space. They did, however, cover the cost of treating his ringworm, URI, and fleas. He was the runt of his litter, had bad diarrhea, was lethargic, but so full of love. We treated him, he mostly recovered, but had diarrhea for the next 13 years with almost daily vomiting. No vet could tell us why. They gave us prescription cat food (made no difference), probiotic medicine (worked for 30 days and the day after the final dose he was back to vomiting and diarrhea again), anti-nausea meds, and even suggested OTC fiber powder and yogurt. No difference. I watched a vet show and the lead veg, Dr. Pol, had a patient come on with these symptoms and immediately figured out it was the fish in the cat's food. Cats can't digest the fat and other stuff in fish. Jasper had been eating seafood his entire life because Cacoa refused everything else. We removed all seafood because why tf not, we tried everything else. Two days later, solid stools, no vomiting for weeks.

Then, November 23rd, 2021, he was vomitting nearly every hour for a solid day, diarrhea, and then he refused to eat or drink anything. He went from a healthy energetic 10 lbs to a weak, lethargic 7 lbs. We took him to the emergency vet clinic as soon as they opened, then napped in the car while we waited. Because we had to get up at 5AM to make it there when they opened at 7AM, and an hour away. They couldn't figure out wtf was wrong, so they have him fluids via IV, anti-nausea meds, and an appetite stimulant. They also suggested kitten food for the calories and fat, which we happily provided. He never fully recovered, but he did gain weight. He was back to his old self this summer, but a week ago he started eating less, vomiting everyday, so I called the clinic. They said to give him the appetite stimulant (we have most of the tube left), kitten food, and make sure he's drinking. He barely ate anything yesterday, even wet food. I gave him wet food today, but refused to do more than lick it. Then threw up a few minutes later and fell over. We just finished wiping the vomit off his arms and chest.

He has an appointment at the urgent care clinic on Monday. I called around today to see if even an emergency clinic can see him. Nope, too many people feeding their dogs things they shouldn't. Jasper will have to wait until Monday. I don't know if he'll make it though. We can feel all his bones, his fur is icky, eyes sunken in, and he's sleeping all day and night.

We've come to terms with the very real possibility that he will have to be euthanized on Monday...if he makes it. Right now, I don't think he will. He's been sick for so long, and the fact it's happening again at almost the same time it did last year...I just don't know.

This is him maybe two weeks ago.

Just 2-3 weeks ago

Today...

I can feel all his ribs and vertebrae, as well has his hips and thighs. He feels angular and sharp, and craves every bit of heat he can take.

He has lived a long life filled with love, sunshine, playing, cuddling, and lots of cat TV (bird feeder outside a window). He's had lots of cuddling and brushing, and knows he is loved and cherished. 16 years is a long time for a cat, and staying 100% indoors has made a huge difference. We had hoped to set up a catio this year, but with al the wildfire smoke and extreme heat, it simply wasn't a safe and healthy option.

If it's his time, I can accept that. Husband has no choice to but to do so. If the vet clinic says euthanasia is best, I will ask if they would be able to do this in our home, so his last moments are in the comfort of our home with people he loves and a soft bed to lay in. If not...I'll make sure to bring something soft that he loves, like my bathrobe. He lives soft fluffy places to sleep.

We're not okay, but we will be. I pray Freyja will take him to wherever the cats go to rest, that he have an afterlife of love, sunshine, fluffy places to sleep, all the stinky food he wants, and lots of cuddling. We love him, he knows that. He has lived longer than many of the vets said he would those many times we've had to take him to be seen for the chronic vomiting and diarrhea.

We will be okay, given time.

Does Slippery Elm Really Do What The Girls Say?

The TikTok girlies might be on to something...

All the women of the land want to claim they have that ill na na, that WAP and as you can see by the timeless colloquialisms this is nothing new. The reality is that not every woman has it and I’m not saying that to shame, I’m actually saying that to normalize and minimize the shame that is seemingly around the subject matter because there are physical and mental reasons why vaginal drynessmight occur. This is not me saying that you should settle for “it is what it is” but quite the opposite. Instead, know that you’re not alone and that in some cases there is work that can be done, physicians and sex therapists who might be able to help you learn ways to increase vaginal “wetness” or lubrication, or the cause of vaginal dystrophy or dryness as it can be several factors, from stress to menopause and SO *claps* MUCH *claps* MORE *claps*.

One thing that has piqued my cat-like curiosity is the girlies of TikTok saying that slippery elm bark, a plant that works as a demulcent, was the secret ingredient to getting macaroni-in-a-pot gushy. In fact, slippery elm bark has caused an increase in sales according to John Frigo, trainer, registered dietitian, and product specialist with Best Price Nutrition. He also adds that they can typically pinpoint TikTok as the culprit when these sorts of things begin to trend yet this time it happens to hold some truth. Frigo's exact words were, “Slippery elm bark seems to increase the mucilage tissues in our bodies which includes vaginal tissue. While no studies have been done on this anecdotally there seems to be a consensus that after about a week of use women begin to experience a noticeable difference.”

I spoke with two other experts who believe it is likely that slippery elm bark could work to increase wetness based on the product's mechanism. They also agree that it wouldn’t be their first line of defense when it comes to increasing your “sauce” as Rihanna once referred to it as. Making this the perfect segue because we want to know all the things anyways!

Before deferring to slippery elm as your vaginal wetness hack, the two experts have some suggestions to try in order to increase vaginal lubrication.

1. Balance Your Vaginal pH

Among other factors that can create vaginal dryness, your pH balance is one of them. Your pH balance plays an important role in the overall health of your vagina. For your vaginal pH to be considered balanced, it needs to fall between the 3.8 to 4.5 range. Having a pH balance that is too high (over 4.5) is the perfect breeding ground for unhealthy bacteria to flourish and increases your risk for infections like BV. In order to correct an unbalanced pH, you can implement habits like taking probiotics, staying hydrated, and improving your diet.

Dr. Erica Steele, board-certified naturopathic doctor and certified functional medicine practitioner explains, “The digestive system has a symbiotic relationship with the female reproductive system so cleaning up the digestive system is very important to create a healthy and balanced vaginal canal. Lowering fat in the diet, increasing protein as well as improving the microbiology of the digestive system, specifically, the liver is key to ensuring a healthy vaginal canal.”

2. Vaginal Moisturizers

Vaginal moisturizers can be a very effective way to treat vaginal dryness. The over-the-counter remedy can be found in both gel and suppository form and use hyaluronic acid to hydrate vaginal cells and therefore moisturize the vagina. This differs from lubricantsbecause vaginal moisturizers can alter vaginal tissues whereas lubricants just add a lubricated barrier to reduce tears that may stem from the friction created by intercourse. Furthermore, vaginal moisturizers are most effective when used regularly as most products suggest twice-a-week application. And like most skin care products, the more consistently you use it, the better the results. 3. Vaginal DHEA

Another non-hormonal option that can be used to treat vaginal atrophy is vaginal dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). This treatment is most often used by postmenopausal women to improve sexual function and increase vaginal wetness that naturally reduces as women get older. Kim Vopni, who is known as the Vagina Coach, says, "Vaginal DHEA is a non-hormonal cream that can help with the conversion of estrogen and testosterone. Estrogen is a big part of a healthy vagina and as we age and produce less estrogen, the walls of the vagina thin and become drier." Vopni recommends Julva Vulva Rejuvenating Cream as a personal favorite.

4. Do Pelvic Floor Exercises

In addition to the other options listed as ways to address dryness, consider working out! No, not in the gym. Vopni suggests doing pelvic floor exercises. She adds, "Kegelsare a commonly known form of pelvic floor exercise that, when done correctly, can help increase blood flow and circulation to the vagina and can help with lubrication. An at-home device called the vFit by Joylux has also been shown to increase lubrication, among other benefits.”

While it is a relief to know that TikTokers weren’t pulling slippery elm out of their bag of tricks and deception (since it is hit or miss), it’s wonderful to know that there are other approaches than can be taken before purchasing slippery elm. And generally speaking, options!
