Useless Trivia about Green Day [INROCK October 2012]
Billie Joe Armstrong
★ The first album Billie Joe bought himself when he was four years old was Elvis Presley's The Sun Sessions. From then on, he sang as Elvis in front of the mirror.
★ At the age of five, he recorded his debut single, ‘Look For Love’. (You can hear Billie Joe singing as a five-year-old on YouTube.)
★ Billie Joe's record collecting began at the age of four, and now, at the age of 40, he has no idea how many records he already owns, most of which are in the basement with his wife Adrianne's also huge record collection. He says, "I'm not a librarian, so the order of the records is all over the place", so even if he suddenly wants to listen to an album, it's difficult to find it.
★ Billie Joe is the youngest of six siblings. His eldest brother was born in 1950 and is much older than him. Under the influence of his older brothers and sisters, he became familiar with the music of The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, R.E.M. and Black Flag from a very young age. His first concert was a Van Halen (pictured right) show at the age of 12, which "blew his mind". His first punk gig was at Operation Ivy when he was 15. He was not allowed in the venues due to age restrictions, but was allowed in as a member.
★ When Billie Joe arrived at the airport in Minnesota to visit his wife Adrianne's parents, he was surprised to see someone standing in line right behind him. It was his idol Joe Strummer (The Clash, pictured above)! "He was talking to my son Joey. ‘My name's Joey too,’ he said. That was awesome."
★ When Billie Joe tries out guitars in music stores, he plays his own songs. "It's easy to know what that guitar feels like. Of course, I don't want anyone to see me playing my songs, so I do it when no one is around."
★ Billie Joe, although a millionaire, still professes to be blue collar. "We come from a community of people who work hard to make a living… We are still a working class band." So, naturally, he sends his sons to a very ordinary public school, not a private school.
★ "You're lucky if you work hard" is his working philosophy and motto.
★ He has an 18-year-old cat, Cleveland. His brother Zero died in a dryer ‘accident’. He also has a dog, Rocky.
★ Just before Billie Joe gets his creative juices flowing, he gets into a terrible mood and says things he shouldn't say, hurting everyone around him. And then he has to apologise flat out afterwards.
★ What do you think is the album on repeat in Hell? He answered, "Probably the Black Eyed Peas album, right?"
Mike Dirnt
★ Mike loves coffee. As long as it's coffee, it doesn't matter if it's hotel coffee or Starbucks coffee. And if there's a donut in it, he's more than happy.
★ All of Mike's religious beliefs are "based on Star Wars".
★ Mike's natural hair is brown.
Tré Cool
★ He once tried milking a female dog there because he didn't have any milk to put in his coffee.
★ Tré only has one ball. When he was in high school, he was riding a unicycle on stage and fell under the stage. He then fell straight onto the unicycle and crushed one of his testicles.
★ Tré is the godfather of Billie Joe's sons.
About the trilogy “Uno!”, “Dos!”, and “Tre!”
★ The Occupy movement has been sweeping across the USA since last year. The Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City were the most well-publicised, but the demonstrations in Green Day's hometown of Oakland, California, saw some participants turn into rioters, leading to violent exchanges with police. The three Green Day members, who of course position themselves on the side of the 99 percent, are also hesitant to actively participate in the Occupy movement. "The best thing about the Occupy movement is that there is no leader, and that's also its biggest drawback" (Billie Joe). The new album ('Tre!') includes the song ‘99 Revolutions’, which touches on the difference between the 1 percent and the 99 percent, but they don't want to go so far as to join a demonstration and support it with a song.
★ The new album, a trilogy, is said to be mainly about love and sexual tension with girls. "I think we ended up bookending that era with (the politically charged) ‘American Idiot’ and ‘21st Century Breakdown’. So now we're entering a new era for us, and it's more about love and sexual tension than political stuff." (Billie Joe). At the end of ‘21st Century Breakdown’, the band was under a lot of stress and pressure, and that's when they needed to change gears and break new ground.
★ A clear explanation of the trilogy. Uno!’ is ‘an album that gets you in the mood to party’, ‘Dos!' is ‘Let's party!’, and ‘Tre!’ is ‘cleaning up’ (Billie Joe).
★ They wrote about 70 songs for this album. Demo recording was done in Berlin, Glasgow, Amsterdam, and London. Only 40 of the 70 songs were actually recorded. 37 songs will be included on the album.
★ The final chapter of the trilogy, ‘Tre!’ features an orchestra for some of the songs. The orchestral musicians read and play the music, but Billie Joe, the author of the music, cannot read the music. "It's a strange feeling when I look at the sheet music I've written and I can't understand it at all. It's like looking at Braille."
★ About ‘Tre!’, Tré was overjoyed, saying, "I finally got an album with my name on it. How cool is that? What's more, it's "Tre Cool" (super cool)."
Translator's Note: Finally back into the groove of translating stuff. Gotta say, listening to a 5-year old Billie Joe singing is actually super cute.

Nico Rosberg and Maro Engel: a non-exhaustive compilation of their friendship over the years
"My friends are all Italian, I grew up with their mentality and get along with it best. But my best friend at school was Maro Engel, who now drives in the DTM. He, his family and another family friend were the only Germans I really had contact with." (2008)
Question: "Nico Rosberg also grew up in Monaco. Did you have much contact? Two German teenagers in a foreign country with the same passion, racing…" Engel: "It was through Nico that I got into racing in the first place. We were in the same class together at school, became best friends very quickly and then also went on vacation together. There, his father Keke bought Nico a go-kart for his birthday and asked my father if he wouldn't like to buy me one, too. That's how the whole thing started." Question: "When was that exactly?" Engel: "That was in 1991." (2008)
What happened subsequently? Maro Engel: After that, we used to have fun, messing around in the mini karts. We then took them back home to Monaco, where I would practise with Nico at weekends. Our parents eventually started up a kart team together, and we contested our first races with the team at around ten years of age. We then went our separate ways from a racing point of view. I competed in junior kart races in Germany and Nico in Italy. (2017)
Becoming a racing driver in Monaco seems to have come naturally. My parents had nothing at all to do with motorsport, my father found it quite interesting and watched it in front of the TV from time to time. I got into it through my friend Nico Rosberg. His father Keke said it would be cool if the boys played kart together. Nico Rosberg is your childhood friend? I was in kindergarten with him. We became close friends very quickly from then on and started karting together. We started on his father's track in Ibiza. Keke had a property there with its own kart track. We were on vacation there together, and Keke gave Nico a kart for his birthday. We are two months apart, Nico's birthday is June 27 and mine is August 27. We were turning six at the time. So your father was under pressure? Yes. Keke asked him if he wouldn't like to give me a vehicle like that, so the kids could do something together - and the parents could enjoy their vacation. That's how it turned out. Nico and I also went to school together in Monaco and later to the English school in Nice. Our friendship lasts until today. My fiancée Steffi gets along excellently with Nico's wife Vivian. (2017)

Who also cheered loudly was Nico Rosberg. The Formula 1 world champion is currently on an inspirational trip to the USA and was hugely happy for his kindergarten buddy. "I'm very pleased that Maro's perseverance and ambition prevailed. I know these qualities only too well from many backgammon games," Rosberg told Auto Bild Motorsport. "It's great to see that Maro never gave up after his DTM debut in 2008 and has now been rewarded for it. Hopefully many more victories will follow," he said. (2017)

HELP MARK PATTON COVER HIS MEDICAL BILLS!!!
(originally posted january 13th, 2023)
mark patton, an actor and lgbtq+ activist best known for playing jesse in a nightmare on elm street 2, has been hospitalized for complications relating to HIV/AIDS, and his agent has put up a gofundme to help raise the money to get patton to better hospital facilities.
anyone who’s familiar with the elm street movies or mark patton’s history can tell you that he’s had a very rough go of it; after being outed against his wishes in the aftermath of elm street 2’s release, his fledgling career was tanked, and he proceeded to lose many friends and loved ones throughout the AIDS crisis. patton himself contracted HIV and retired quietly to mexico in the late 90s, where he lived in obscurity until a critical and fan re-evaluation of elm street 2 took place in the mid 2010s.
patton has since re-emerged to the convention circuit, where he raises awareness for lgbtq+ people and for HIV/AIDS. he’s a very important queer horror icon, and one who’s very dear to me personally as well. i know i have a pretty decent following of horror fans, so i hope that if any of you have the money to spare, you’ll consider donating to him. even if you can’t, i hope that you’ll share this post!
full gofundme text/description, written by patton’s agent/manager peter valderrama:
[id: three screenshots of a gofundme description. it reads:
Hey guys! This Peter Valderrama, posting for Mark. I have urgent statements here from and about Mark Patton I appreciate if everyone reads carefully I know it is a bit long but it is a serious matter If you can help or share in anyway it is appreciated very much. As Mark Pattons manager, I've been asked on his behalf to help post this Information and get this statement to be seen!
As his fans know very well, Mark takes his events very seriously and values any opportunity to meet with them in person- especially after the last few years with covid seriously crippling those opportunities.,
Mark was truly looking forward to this show for quite some time but sadly his health has taken a drastic turn for the worse.
He has been ill for quite some time now- originally it was thought to be aftershocks of covid and some hefty infections that could potentially be tackled with care and rest. But now it is quite clearly AIDS related ailments that he is managing.
He has been quiet for his own privacy but with the cancellation of his events at the musicbox theater and horror house shop he has decided to release his news in the hopes that his community could help him.
Mark is currently in a Mexican hospital where they speak very little English- and they are completely overcome with covid cases there.. He needs to be transported to an American hospital down there where he can be receive more specialized care in a safer setting. For this, we humbly need to ask for help.
Mark himself has asked in a statement below that we share his current news and ask everyone in the horror community to please help with his fundraiser in any way that they can.
"Basically I am asking for help I will not be embarrassed…. I just want to be healthy and at home with family.
I need to move to American Hospital in Mexico where they can give me the treatment i desperately need.
The American Hospital is $300 dollars a day with nurses, doctors and meds. The Mexican hospital are overwhelmed with Covid and I am too compromised to remain here.
I feel very stupid for being overly optimistic. I thought I would be flying to Chicago today but I promise that when I am well enough to fly to USA I will.
I have faced these medical challenges before and I know I have a lot of fight left in me- but the last few years have been crippling for me financially. I have always lived Month to month and I have been struggling with medical visits since October.
If anyone is able to contribute it would mean a life saving option for me to be recovering in a place that can cater to my condition.
Thank you all
Love,
Mark"

hi cheng, welcome back! hope you’ve been well!
can you please do a reading on how each member of enhypen felt about their send offs for their fate tour in the usa?
i’ve come across a few things and it wasn’t the prettiest….
HIII!! lately everything's been pretty cool!
enhypen thoughts on fate usa send off
24 october, 2023
i think enha is a bit fascinated with newark because they haven't been there before and they were there for two days.
heeseung may have wanted to stay a bit longer. he actually had a really good time and most likely did not want the american portion of the tour to end. maybe he ignored a few guidelines he would and should normally follow for his own safety, but he was in the moment! so much so that he was a bit frustrated, he worked so hard, but he felt he had too limited of a time to be with his fans and bathe in his hard work.
in particular, los angeles may have stuck out the most to him, he may have felt the most appreciated/loved.
ten of swords rx., king of wands rx., the devil, the fool rx., page of wands rx., seven of wands rx., ten of cups, the lovers
jay may have felt very nervous at the send offs, he feels like he made mistakes during them. maybe he believes he was not up to everyone's expectations, yet of course that is not true. he was very curious about each place he visited though! however, he probably will continue to harbor nervous or self-critical feelings. he has a specfic template for himself just in general and becomes worried upon not acting up to his own expectations.
newark may have stuck out the most to jay, however, not for the best reasons as he believes the behavior of the attendees were not the best.
five of wands rx., nine of cups rx., ten of wands rx., page of swords, six of swords rx., knight of wands rx.
jake felt that the send offs were defintiely unfair, or simply not the best experience for him. there were definitely conflicts, toxic fans to be frank. in general, jake did enjoy the tour overall! it was just the send offs and certain interactions that left him not the most content.
as for specific locations, he mentions newark as well. seeing as it is their first time in newark, he definitely sees it as a milestone for the group's expansion. he does really want to go back to newark, but he is still hesitant.
justice rx., two of swords, three of cups, six of cups rx., ace of swords, six of swords rx.
sunghoon definitely had a change in perspective throughout the usa portion of the tour. there could have been times where he did not have much motivation and a lot of excessive worry; things such as 'what if they don't like me?'. luckily that mindset of his definitely changed after the tour.
initially, large bunches of cards fell out in large clumps at a time. sunghoon has no favorite or least favorite place that he visited. he is very grateful that he was able to see more fans across america, and more importantly, he is more confident in himself at a global level.
seven of swords rx., the star rx., the wheel of fortune, two of cups
sunoo does not have much to say about the tour. he liked it though! overall, he felt pretty comfortable and glad to have been given the opportunity. he is glad he could celebrate his success with his fans.
he liked los angeles the most, he felt the most rewarded there and also felt he had performed just as accordingly. sunoo's least favorite is probably newark, as he felt that the energy was excessively energetic; the crowd may have been aggressive.
four of wands, justice, the chariot
jungwon is glad to be building the group's career even higher after the fate tour in the usa. but he has completely exhausted himself from it. the tour entirely has lead him to thinking about what is next about his future, worrying about a plateau if he makes the wrong decisions from now on. he is fully capable of getting even higher than he is now, he just needs to rest and get ready to put it in action.
he seems to have enjoyed dallas the most as that is where he felt his hardwork and concentration pay off the most.
three of pentacles, four of swords, seven of cups, ace of pentacles rx., page of pentacles rx., knight of swords, nine of pentacles, the magician
niki believes that fate tour in the usa was a bit of a disaster. there was a lot of chaos and a lot of different situations going on at the same time. to him, it just was not planned out well. at all. he felt it was lazily put together. everyone had responsibilities but barely anyone upheld them.
he enjoyed all the locations they visited, newark stands out to him the most; it was the place he was the most excited about visting. he does not have a least favorite and is trying to be optimistic about the future cities they will be visiting!
the tower, ten of pentacles rx., ten of wands, nine of cupsm king of pentacles, temperance, the star

What was the best trip/vacation you have ever taken? What made it special?
There are two:
Chubut, Argentina (2021): so in 2021 I became obsessed with going whale watching, I'd seen an influencer doing it a few years earlier and then I was getting some ads, and I was like "omg yes I need to do this asap, this will heal me". I told my BFF and she joined in, so we booked a trip for october, which is when you can see the most fauna. I did go on a boat to see the whales, and to a beach where the whales were *right there*, and to a penguin reserve and a sea lion reserve, and it was so good, it made me fall in love with my country. I would move there if it wasn't so cold and expensive. Also it did heal me btw.
California, USA (2018): it was my first and, to date, only international trip, I went alone to meet fandom friends, planning it was insane, I have many regrets about it, but... I did it! I was in San Francisco and Los Angeles, I visited many cool places and had a great time overall.

Hi. These numbers from the End of the Year asks, please? ^^
1. Song of the year?
9. Best month for you this year?
10. Something that made you cry this year?
11. Something you want to do again next year?
14. Favorite book you read this year?
15. What’s a bad habit you picked up this year?
18. A memorable meal this year?
19. What’re you excited about for next year?
21. What’s something new about your place of residence (room, home, or general location) now vs the start of the year?
22. Favorite place you visited this year?
23. If you could send a message to yourself back on the first day of the year, what would it be?
Blood on the Snow by Hozier probably.
9. .... uh... October?
10. Our train got canceled the night before it was supposed to leave and my parents were flying out the next day so we sorta like, needed to get back. After a bit of a stress cry we got it together though and figured out a solution on the fly in true "what is travel without some shenanigans?" style.
11. Train travel (despite the answer above lol). I've always liked trains and I need to take more advantage of the fact I now live in like one of the few places in the USA that actually has decent trains.
14. The Quiet Americans: Four CIA Spies at the Dawn of the Cold War--A Tragedy in Three Acts by Scott Anderson and It was a Long Time Ago, and It Never Happened Anyway: Russia and the Communist Past by David Satter
15. Swearing at work and revealing how okay I am with other people swearing around me. It's not the worst workplace to have this problem, but I need to like rebuild my filter for the higher ups.
18. I went to Thanksgiving at the house of my friend from high school who I hadn't seen since high school (turns out we live less than an hour away from each other now). She even married her high school boyfriend which just... still blows my mind. But it was great to reconnect since I usually don't even do anything for Thanksgiving.
I also got to share a meal for the first time with @boredcomiccollector86 because they were like you do not get to come to my town and not do something. The food wasn't that great, but the night was.
19. Not being in this year anymore? Hopefully I can do some more fun travel, this year was pretty travel low until the very end.
... Literally just remembered I am planning a trip and one of my friends is coming to visit me later this year. So yeah. That will be good. We will once again be able to tell everyone when they ask how we met "Oh I made her cry on the internet for the last decade."
21. I had to get new/more yarn storage.
22. I really liked the Renwick Gallery in Washington DC. A bit more off the beaten tourist path for the city but it's got that great mix of classic architecture and modern craft art that makes me go feral.
23. You are going to be VERY fucking stressed medically speaking. And that's okay because there is actually something wrong and you do need to get to the bottom of it, but also deep breaths because it's going to be something that can be dealt with. Embrace the shredder fic you're about to write to deal with this.

Day 2 and 3 - 10th and 11th October 2009 in Kyiv - not the original post. Written in October 2014
Please note, some of the links are a bit old. This was written in October 2014, as opposed to October 2009.
Sorry this post is long, but it means a lot to me. Five years ago today, I went on possibly the longest airline flight since November 2003 when I flew directly from SFO to Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok airport on Lantau/Tung Chung. It was DFW to IAD (Washington Dulles), then to DME (Moscow Domodedovo), and finally to KIE (Kiev Borispol) on S7 Airlines. It beat the time it took flying directly from SFO to Hong Kong. I did not get to Kiev until about 7 PM local time. Were there direct flights from the USA to Kiev in October 2009? I was using some miles that time from an undisclosed major US air carrier, so that would not have been an option anyway. What did I have for supper? I went to a Czech restaurant near the US Consulate, had a pork chop with dumplings and gravy, and Staropramen beer plus a bottle of pasteurized non-alcoholic Kvass that I bought at an "outdoor 7 Eleven". Those outdoor 7 Elevens are as common as McDonald's, one of Kiev's greatest conveniences, plus the bus ticket sales and marshrutka cash-only minibuses. For the metro you have to go to a station to get the turquoise tokens for two hryvnias, approx $0.23 US apiece, good for one entry and "unlimited transfers" until you go up the escalator to the exit, and after that? Too bad, use another token to re-enter, comrade!— in Kyiv, Ukraine.Lots of cool stuff to see in Kiev. Saturday 10th I went on the Lonely Planet Guide walking tour, saw the parliament building and presidential building, the park where dozens and dozens of wedding photo parties going on, one with a Chrysler 300C limo. Then St. Michael's, St. Sophia's and St. Volodymyr's. Watch out for the "turkey droppers" who try to scam tourists with cash they drop. I don't fall for that nonsense. Sunday 11th I went to the Lavra, it's a complex of Orthodox chapels, south of downtown Kiev. I also went into the military museum about a mile away, had Indian for lunch - that place just stuck out but I had to try it anyway. Monday the 12th I went to the Chernobyl museum, much safer than the actual site itself - I bet most of you cannot remember the incident in 1986, one of the Soviet Union's most embarrassing moments, it's too depressing to describe, won't go on unless you really want to know. Had lunch at the Garbuzyk, had the best authentic Chicken Kiev. Visited the big complex way south of downtown Kiev, with about fifty different architectural styles seen across the Ukraine. For food, I recommend the Original "Bierstube" http://www.lonelyplanet.com/.../entertain.../other/bierstube for their excellent Stroganoff as well as "Viola's" http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCYQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lonelyplanet.com%2Fukraine%2Fkyiv%2Fentertainment-nightlife%2Fother%2Fviolas-bierstube&ei=sgg2VNWoNcGTyASa94DICA&usg=AFQjCNE9LTTofE_d3Kv0IIHTDwyZs6U_Kw&sig2=117lapTNVhSNjwUOewpSHg&bvm=bv.76943099,d.aWw, also "Shalena Mama" http://www.lonelyplanet.com/.../res.../european/shalena-mama. For breakfast, I recommend "Double Coffee", they make excellent egg and meat dishes. Lots of other good places are at Maidan Nezhaleznosti / Kreshchatyk.
Four days later, namely Tuesday the 13th I would take a long train ride from Kiev to Minsk via Korosten. Had an interesting adventure in a town that seemed to still be stuck in the Soviet times, ending up ordering pizza and hot tea. Hot tea with pizza? When it's raining cats and dogs in the Ukraine, and it's in the upper 40's, Coke, Pepsi and beer might not be the best thing to have. Soviet coffee has not really improved since I first visited July/August 1990. Also it's hard getting long-distance train tickets in the former Soviet Union, even in 2009, regardless of one's fluency in Russian. Despite computers, they did not have an online booking function with either Ukraine or Belarus. No such thing as a Eurail pass for that part of Europe. Your basic choices are "Platskartniy" or "Kupeniyi" classes. Platskartniy is sort of open seating and you might have to share an open compartment with a "babushka" Kupeniy class is the traditional four berth compartment, meals are included, tea is cheap by the glass. I ended up in Minsk, about Wednesday the 14th at 5:30 AM local time. McDonalds was open but they were serving lunch for breakfast. Photos from that time available on request - including the mug of mustard from the Bierstube! The Fitness Studio boat doesn't come for another week at least.

Must-See Digital Nomad Hotspots in Asia
Following on from our recent articles on the best digital nomad hotspots in South America and the top digital nomad hotspots in Europe, we now turn our attention to Asia.
Asia is the largest continent in the world and has many varied countries and cultures to explore. This, coupled with a largely temperate climate and low cost of living compared to Europe and the USA, makes it a dream for many looking to live cheaply and well. The excellent internet infrastructure in much of Asia also helps attract digital nomads who work in technology and need fast upload and download speeds.
Bangkok, Thailand
The capital city of Thailand is a favourite for many digital nomads due to the high quality of accommodation available at a relatively low cost and the variety and quality of cuisine. Like many parts of Asia, the internet speeds you can get there and the service reliability make Bangkok an excellent city in which to work.
One of the main attractions for many nomads is a sense of community and having the chance to make new friends from all around the world. There are regular events in Bangkok for the thriving ex-pat and nomad communities, and these can help alleviate some first-timer concerns about loneliness. Living in a coliving space is a great way to make new friends, and you can stay at Unionspace Coliving in Bangkok for under £300 per month.
There are many great coworking options located around the city, and these range from giant hubs like Spaces, which has over 300 seats to smaller and more intimate venues like Common Ground, which has multiple locations across the city.
Canggu, Bali Indonesia
The island of Bali, Indonesia, is home to some excellent digital nomad hotspots, and one of the best is Canggu. It is located on the coast and is known for offering an enviable work-life balance. There is top-quality surfing and plenty of opportunities to go for sun-drenched walks or scooter rides through the forest before enjoying some wild partying with new friends.
There is a real sense of entrepreneurial spirit here, and many digital nomads launch new businesses with people they meet at the coworking and cafes. This community is very well catered to, and there are many gluten-free restaurants and breakfast places selling bowls of Acai.
There is also fast internet, a must for any digital nomad hotspot and a full range of accommodation options from hostels with bunk bed dormitories to apartments to villas with their own swimming pool. A deluxe room at Matra Bali Coliving will set you back around £350 per month at the time of writing.
There is something to suit every budget, and it is easy to see why Canggu is so popular. English is also widely spoken in Canggu due to the influx of digital nomads, which can make the experience much less daunting for those just dipping a toe into the lifestyle.
Hanoi, Vietnam
This city in Vietnam has one of the most iconic Instagram photos you can get. There is a street called Train Street, where the train tracks literally pass through the middle of a street with restaurants and pavements for walking on either side. This is a very popular street for photos, and many have taken unbelievable risks to get their shot, which we don’t recommend. However, there is much to explore outside of Train Street in Hanoi. It is an old city with many architectural wonders to experience, and exploring the Old Quarter, in particular, is worth doing.
March to April and October to November in Hanoi are the best times of year to visit because outside of these times, it can be unbearably hot and rainy. Avoiding the rainy season is recommended so that you can enjoy exploring the city and the surrounding area to the max during your stay.
Hanoi’s low cost of living is also why this is a digital nomad hub, with most visitors pleasantly surprised. There are many excellent coworking facilities to take advantage of, and internet speeds are almost universally fast across the city. There is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, which will satisfy most travellers whether on a tight budget or with more money to spend. A coliving villa with a swimming pool and a coworking space will cost around £250 per month.
Authentic Vietnamese cuisine from street food stalls is generally safe and appetising, and there are also international options for those who crave food that they are used to at home at some point during their trip. We recommend being adventurous when it comes to food here and trying Banh Xeo (crepes with shrimp and pork) and Pho (noodles with chicken or beef and spices) should both be high on the list.
Chiang Mai, Thailand
One of the most famous digital nomad hotspots, Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand, has seen this popularity translate into higher prices for accommodation in recent years. Having said that, it is still affordable but is more on a par with some Western destinations in terms of price now.
Chiang Mai is a vibrant, historic city with over 300 temples to explore. Some of them date back as far as the 1200s, so if you are someone who is fascinated by history, this is an ideal location to visit. It is also very popular with people who enjoy the outdoors, and there are trails through verdant forests and beautiful waterfalls. It is a very picturesque location.
There are many excellent choices for remote workers, from cafes to coworking spaces. There are also varied accommodation options which include everything from hostels and apartments to co-livings like Alt_ChiangMai.
Alt_ChiangMai has a co-working space as well as co-living accommodation and has 23 ensuite bedrooms for digital nomads. These can either be rented short-term or long-term, and the price points reflect this. It is possible to live here reasonably cheaply if you are prepared to commit to staying for a longer period of time. There are multiple communal living spaces in this spacious and modern co-living and it looks like an excellent option in the heart of Chiang Mai.
Ubud, Bali, Indonesia
Situated amongst the rice terraces of Bali, Ubud is in the centre of the island and offers a completely different experience to Canggu. This is a very green part of the island and is perfect for those who feel at home amongst nature. Balinese art and culture are prominent here, and it is a popular place for people who want to experience the best yoga retreats and take part in spiritual practices.
Although Ubud isn’t located on the coast, it does have some excellent pool clubs that you can visit and spend time in the water. Most have cafes attached, so it is possible to work from them for the day and make time to enjoy the facilities on offer. There is also coliving accommodation available to rent at reasonable prices.
The natural world is on your doorstep, and if you want to monkey around with the local wildlife, you should visit the monkey forest. Just be careful around any young, as their parents might be very protective of them.
Ubud has so much to offer, and it is easy to see why it is such a popular destination for digital nomads to spend some quality time resetting and recharging. The internet is fast and the range of accommodation is everything that you would hope for from a top-tier digital nomad destination.
