MY TIME DURING COVID
It was four years ago, when the world came to a standstill thanks to the presence of a virus called COVID-19. I was in Leeuwarden when I heard about this virus. It was present in China at the time so nobody in my university was worried about it. But as time passed by, the virus started to spread across several countries, people started to get concerned.
I was away from my parents, so we were in constant communication as to whether I should go back to Qatar or stay in Leeuwarden. But as the cases started to rise in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands, we thought it would be safer for me to go back to Qatar. On the 17th of March 2020, I travelled from Leeuwarden to Qatar, but then another problem raised. Qatar was not allowing entry to anyone who was not a Qatar Citizen and at that moment, we decided that the best thing to do if for me and my mother to travel to India and stay in my relative’s home. In our opinion, this was the best option as we thought the lockdown would not last more than a month. So, we travelled to Mumbai while my father stayed in Qatar where my mother’s sister had vacated her house so we could stay there and quarantine.
My mother and I struggled in the initial stages as we always had to wear masks and gloves while going downstairs to buy fruits, vegetables, and other essentials for the house. My mother was away from my father which was very difficult for her and much like the world, my mother and I found entertainment through social media and TikTok reels. The chores in the house were distributed between my mother and me as I oversaw washing dishes, watering plants and laundry while she was doing the cooking and the cleaning of the house. Matters got worse when the lockdown was extended for another month and none of our family members could stay with us at the time. Outside our house, all we could hear was negativity as nobody had any clue as to when the lockdown was going to end.
Two months into the lockdown, things felt like they were easing because people were allowed to travel within their state, which meant our family could stay with us. This made things a little better for my mother and me as we had people to help us and keep us company. Another advantage of the family staying with us was there was someone to help us with the chores at home. Another positive was that sports matches were coming back, albeit in an empty stadium. It looked like we were starting to get some sort of respite. But just then, there was the news about Sushant Singh Rajput committing suicide and because people were already frustrated with the lockdown, this news just pushed people over the edge. Social media became a negative place, and the next month became difficult for everyone.
On the studies front, I was attending classes and writing exams online and this was a different challenge for all of us as a lot of us were in different parts of the world in different time zones. We had to give our written examinations with the cameras turned on in our laptops to make sure that we were not cheating. I was working on group projects with my team members who were in different parts of the world, and this had its disadvantages like having to agree on a particular which was not always easy due to the time difference and there was the problem of the internet connection which was not always stable.
Five moths into the lockdown, we got news that we would be allowed to travel back to Qatar and when we heard this, my mother and I were ecstatic when we heard this news. We had to wear a mask and a face shield while travelling in the plane but that did not matter to us because we just wanted to get back home. When we landed in Qatar, we had another challenge where People had to quarantine for one week inside a room before they were allowed to go home and it was a lot to take for my mother and me as we had already been though a lot.
On the 7th day, we were allowed to travel back home and the three of us were finally together after almost half a year. This was an experience that I will never forget and hopefully never want to go through ever again.

I just saw that you answered my travel vague question with a question 1. What are your packing essentials? 2. How to deal with traveling alone? Not in the sense of feelings safe but like being able to enjoy myself? I guess... I spend a lot of time alone, but like at home, going to the store or getting work done, not getting on a plane and visiting another country Thanks
OKAY PACKING ESSENTIALS, WITH ASHLEIGH:
three shirts too many, but assume anything you forget can be purchased there. to be real honest, sometimes i leave stuff out that i won’t need immediately because i like buying foreign shampoo or toothpaste or whatever. it depends what i’m running out of. this is not an approach that works for everyone because creature comforts to one person are mental health necessities to another.
space bags are very important, but the trick is DON’T use them when you’re packing to go, use them for bonus space when you’re trying to fit everything in on the way home. ziplock everything that could even possibly maybe leak. i’ve finally abandoned taking my laptop anywhere now that i have an ipad with a keyboard, and it was the best upgrade to my travel life. unless you’re literally going to lie on a beach for a week, don’t bother taking the book you are deluding yourself that you’re going to read.
i also take a spare pair of glasses and a spare phone. they’re the only true emergency planning i do.
also, bonus category - for long haul flights:
a change of underwear and socks
the softest hoodie i own
toothbrush and toothpaste (i was on a flight once where there were little kits for free and i took a whole bunch and i’ve been using them forever. thanks qatar?)
eye drops, hand cream, face moisturizer - airplanes are super dehydrating and my skin hates it, staying hydrated helps reduce jetlag
NASAL SPRAY, the mist kind, not the one that stops your nose from running - this is a weird one but one of the best ways to fight off catching other people’s germs is snot, and keeping your nose from drying out helps
battery pack - most planes these days have a USB port for every seat (ALWAYS TAKE YOUR USB CABLE WITH YOU) but i once got stuck on a plane where none of them were working and my phone was at 50% and it was the most stressful 5 hours
also, buy a cute passport case. just because.
as for travelling alone, not gonna lie: it’s sometimes hard. it’s super fucking hard to stroll into a brand new place anywhere on your own. but if you’re visiting a new place, at the end of the day, you either be like nike and just fucking do it, or you miss out. my comfort levels are such that i’m mostly okay, but i find restaurants way too awkward to be fun. conveniently, i live the burgers across the universe life, and those are totally fine. i’ve accepted fancy restaurants aren’t in my travel life when i’m on my own and i’m happier not suffering through the experience than i am sad about missing out.
one of the things i’ve picked up is that, in a touristy situation, you’ll find friends. when i went to iceland, i was the only person on my own on my tour and that was kind of a bummer at the start, but then i made friends with the other people on the tour and it was great. that’s easier in a situation where you’re trapped with people for a longer amount of time. (my brother, who is a much nicer person than i am, makes friends literally wherever he goes. my parents now own the house that belonged to a couple my brother met on their honeymoon. he was best man in the wedding of a dude he met in a shitty hostel in los angeles where he stayed for one night. this shit happens.)
the other thing is that, you’re never really alone these days. you don’t have to go on vacation from your pocket friends. the weird thing happening in front of you in bumfuck nowhere on the other side of the planet that you really just want to look at someone and mouth WTF about? tell your pocket friends. livetweet your vacation. spam facebook. at the end of the day, we are a sharing species, and some people will be annoyed and some will be jealous and other will be delighting in your every adventure. fuck the haters.
#that last bit is true of life in general and something i'm actively working on reengaging#share you life with people folks#even if it's not in the most obvious way you think#anonymous

Djibouti Diaries, part #1:
Irregular blog series of Iiris’ thoughts and travels in Djibouti filming upcoming feature “The Grave Digger” by Bufo, Pyramide Production and Twenty Twenty Vision.
Reporting thoughts from the first 8 days on the road, exactly 10 days before filming starts
Arrival
I’m not a huge fan of long flights - sometimes my low blood pressure gets the best of me and it’s not once or twice I’ve almost fainted after half a day in a plane. Surprisingly travelling with Qatar Airways was very nice and I rewatched A Star is Born (not the sad end though, as I wasn’t in the mood for sad endings) and got familiar with Aquaman (or tried to, didn’t really understand why was he called Aquaman and why not Ocean Master) and agreed again how complicated element water is for any VFX / CGI work.
Arrival to Djibouti was hot, fun and exciting. We understood already at the airport the way this country works is something very different than what we’re used to. Hot air whispered to our ears and black night took us to it’s arms. Road to our hotel was bumpy and after 30 minutes in the country I was already sweating like a pig. When getting to my room I was definitely in a small shock - no window, everything was very simple, AC wasn’t working - do I really spend the next 1,5 months here? I need to cancel my boyfriends trip here in the last shooting week - he’ll kill me if I’m making him to spend a week in here instead of the nice hotel rooms he always gets when he’s filming abroad. And my phone has no reception whatsoever, how will any producers from upcoming projects be able to reach me?!
I woke up the next morning very sweaty and hungry and went to breakfast (nothing gluten free was available, but luckily I had my own snacks with me). Suddenly after a big cup of black tea with steaming milk (yes, I might be a little British) world seemed exciting, interesting and adventurous. And especially after seeing the city and surrounding landscapes quickly nothing felt that gloomy or primitive anymore. I’m blaming my tired eyes and sudden travel depression for the first looks.
After 24 hours in Djibouti I finally took the time to open my luggage and make the little room mine. I scattered my stuff - my hot water boiler, tea collection, first aid kit, small library, my favourite tea cup, my essentials on suitable places and sat down. This is my small Djiboutian home. I’ve noticed waiting eagerly to get to show all this to my boyfriend (and am slightly worried his first night is like mine and I’ll be offended even though I’ll very much try not to).
As it’s never as easy as it could be / some IT talk
Through the first working week here (which in Djibouti is from Sunday to Thursday) we’ve scouted few missing places and started our tech recce tour. I’ve redone first 2 weeks callsheets with my loyal 2nd AD Paula (who I really really wanted to take this journey with me and I should probably almost apologise the production company for dozens of relentless, demanding emails) who’s arriving here next Saturday. First real setback happened two days ago when my 6-month old laptop broke out of nowhere. As I thought, nearest AppleStores can be found from Egypt, Doha, Dubai or South Africa. No AppleCare on sight either. As our Gaffer was flying to us in the next 12 hours there was no time to cry and get depressed - that I really felt like doing as I’ve already once had to repair this laptop - but to quickly consider my options and act.
Talking about loyal friends no guessing Emma has been the other one. She googled with me and ran to AppleStore to get me the newest iPad Pro with needed accessories and took it to our Gaffers to catch the flight next morning.
2nd setback of course happened when receiving the iPad and realising there is no longer MMS To Go available (seriously Entertainment Partners!!! I cannot be the only 1st AD who uses this) as mine on my old school iPad is a version from 5 years ago, only supported on 32 bit tablets and not on 64 bit ones so they’ve deleted it completely (and have no plans to bring it back as was replied to me from their customer service). Another round of zen mindset was definitely needed as well as Paula who now exports me PDFs to mark all changes so she can then work on those on her laptop’s MMS.
And not to get too optimistic iPad Pro neither supports formulas on pages that I desperately need for my callsheets. So currently after this setback no. 3 I’m also commenting our callsheets on PDF and Paula then makes the changes as needed. This is very close to our usual work flow but I’ve never felt this handless on a production. So Paula is bringing one more device with her - an old computer for all this I cannot do on my sparkly new iPad.
After blaming Apple this badly I must say otherwise I’m very very happy on this iPad and especially it’s functions with folio keyboard and pencil. If MMS and Pages would work here, I’d be replacing my laptop need with this 95%.
Living, understanding and experiencing Djibouti
My expectations of this journey weren’t very glamorous. I was unsure if there’d be anything in the stores I could or would buy being celiac, vegetarian and a western who’s been scared with a lot of talk over possible diseases and how they spread. After a week I feel very normal here. We’ve got two big grocery stores with many familiar products next to the hotel and one even has ”sans gluten” section. I’m starting to get completely used to cars that are old, rusty and missing some usual actions or pieces (only our driver knows how to get the minibus door open) and bumpy roads.
90% of our local crew is always on time. I’ve been stunned. They’re also very helpful, live at the moment, try their hardest to adapt to our ways and never complain. I’m sure our cultures have and will crash but for now it’s been a lot easier than I thought it would be (fingers crossed!). My 3rd AD is a wise local lady who’s determined to teach me some french on the way - and I am determined to learn at least something.
Amount of people everywhere is crazy to a finn. It’s usual there are more than 10 children in the families. I’ve obviously been in tears seeing little children on burning streets without shoes and then again I’ve also discovered how good life can be without all the things we usually think a good life needs. Most of the children look us curiously and after a while we can see a shy little wave - which we always answer to and that usually brings a lot of excitement to the air. Families living in small village with their stone built huts instantly offered us food and water after we marched to meet them with our safari outfits, taking reference photos with our smartphones and drinking water from our filtering bottles. There are goats everywhere - every possible size and color.
I’ve eaten amazing Ethiopian and Indian food. I’ve almost gotten used to the weather - liking 34°C we had yesterday A LOT more than 42°C we had in the beginning of the week though. I’ve only burned little bits of my skin and almost finished my first travel book (Naiset joita ajattelen öisin, Women I think at night by Mia Kankimäki). I’m starting to call this place my home. My phone still has no reception but I’ve very much adapted to the African living in the moment culture - well, it must be a lot of text messages I get after arriving to Dubai in the beginning of November and getting it back online. And as I have Emma, I’m counting on people calling her if they really need to reach me.

We’ve all been there. You’ve stuffed your luggage to the brim on your trip, and now your luggage is a little on the heavy side.
But, how could you have avoided this in the first place? Well, in this article we talk you through all of our best tips so that you don’t end up forking out cash at the gate.
1. Bring a backup digital luggage scale
Are you 2kg overweight? Then it’s going to cost you. For domestic flights, it’s not quite as bad, but for international travel, it’s definitely more.
If you’re convinced that the scales at your house or accommodation are a little dodgy, or you reckon you can sneak in a few cheeky purchases in under the 7kg mark – then you might want to double check to be sure.
A digital luggage scale is a super handy item to have in this instance – whether you’re travelling internationally or domestically. This one from Korjo can weigh up to 44kg, is easy to read and is nice and lightweight at 110 grams as well. All you have to to do is attach it to your bag, lift it up, wait for the beep, put it down and it’ll tell you the weight of your luggage. Just check that you turn off the scales to save on the battery life so that it doesn’t die on you in the critical moment!
If you are over, at least you have time to put on your extra jumper, ditch your extra toiletries, or throw out the packaging from your holiday souvenirs that you don’t need before you arrive at the airport.
A portable luggage scale gives you an accurate reading of the weight of your bag wherever you are. Image: Korjo
2. Carry the lightest bag you have
This one seems like it might be obvious, but if you’ve been using the same clunky carry-on since the dawn of time, then it might be time to ditch it in for one that’s a little more streamlined and lightweight.
You still want something structured to protect your belongings. But heavy hardware and extra bits of plastic are not going to do you any favours in the weight department.
Weigh your bag before you use it so that you know exactly how much it’s setting you back. You’d be surprised how heavy luggage can be on its own!
A lighter carry-on is the easiest step to reducing your travel weight. Image: Eagle Creek
3. Check the rules thoroughly
We all subscribe to those websites that send you amazing travel deals. A weekend to the Gold Coast for an absolute steal, or a week in Thailand without draining your savings account. But have you checked the baggage limit, or any other limitations before you hit ‘check out’? It might be too good to be true.
If you’ve already thought about hitting the shops and treating yourself to some holiday souvenirs, then you might want to reign yourself back in. It might be too good to be true, so read up on the finer details so you know what you’re getting yourself into.
The rule of thumb is that the more budget the airline, the more likely they are to crack down on overweight luggage.
Check out our table below which has all the details on the size and carry on weight limits for all the major airlines worldwide.

4. Buy additional baggage online, not at the airport!
If you’re planning on packing extra or taking home some new purchases – then you will save money by buying extra baggage before the flight. This is because overweight baggage fees are higher than pre-purchasing additional baggage.
If you just know that you’ll want that extra wiggle room when it comes to weight, then bite the bullet and buy additional baggage before your flight.
If you do need extra storage space, having a lightweight duffle bag with you as well as compression travel bags for packing will come in handy. They won’t save weight, but you will be able to squeeze more gear in if your bag is overflowing.
If you know you need to pack more than just the bare necessities, purchase additional baggage. Image: Eagle Creek
5. Use your frequent flyer points
If you’re lucky enough to travel regularly, then you’ve probably racked up some frequent flyer points on your account.
What you might not know is that some airlines – such as Qantas, allow you to use them to buy additional baggage before your flight, which is a perfect solution to an overstuffed suitcase.
Don’t be that crazy looking person pulling on an extra pair of pants, three jumpers and two coats on at the baggage counter – prepare for your trip so that you can (hopefully) breeze through the airport without any extra fees or charges.
Do you have any other handy tips for avoiding overweight baggage fees? Let us know in the comments. For more travel tips and inspiration, head here.

Like Dell and Best Buy, Apple has a recycling program. Unlike either Dell or Best Buy, however, Apple emphasizes the international nature of its program. The parameters of the program vary, but in general, countries either have a recycling program or a trade-in program (which usually includes an option to recycle if there isn’t any trade-in value). What does that mean, though? Let’s look a little more closely at each type of program, whether that’s recycling via partner services, Apple Recycling, or Apple Trade In.
Recycling via Partner Services
In quite a few countries where Apple has a less prominent presence, they partner with other organizations to offer electronics recycling. In a few places (like Turkmenistan) that involves Apple Premium Resellers, but in many, the recycling organization is a genuine third-party service, such as Dataserv (13 different countries), Reverse Logistic (Brunei), Litong (Georgia), and COIPSA (Peru).
Apple Recycling
Apple offers a recycling program that makes it quite easy to get rid of your device in an environmentally-friendly way. Even better, the program is free. Products can be recycled in an Apple store or online at apple.com through the trade in program.
In general, it’s a simple three-step process:
Back up your device. That way you still have all of your content and data, even after you hand off your phone or another device.
Erase the data from your device. Getting rid of the personal information on your phone or other device ensures that no one else has access to your data.
Use the provided shipping label and ship the device off to the provided recycling partner.
Note: If the device you are shipping contains a battery, Apple advises not to ship a battery with more than 30% charge.
Apple Trade In Program
The crown jewel of Apple’s recycling programs, however, is the Apple Trade In Program. With the trade-in option, you can take any of your Apple devices to an Apple store—whether you are looking to an upgrade to a new device or simply done with the device you have—and potentially get trade-in value for your device. Even if your device does not any longer have trade-in value (such as might be the case with an early generation iPhone, iPod, or iPad, for instance), you can still recycle it at the Apple store.
If you go in person to an Apple Store you will be given credit toward a new purchase. If you are not ready to make a new purchase, but have a device to trade in, you can use the online program and you will receive an Apple Store gift card. The online process take about 2-3 for your gift card to be issued.
And if your device does still have trade-in value, that can mean a fantastic price on your next device. If you’re upgrading from the iPhone 8 to the iPhone XR, for instance, you can with trade-in value get the iPhone XR for only $20/month. Similarly, consider the following guidelines:
iPhone trade-ins are eligible for up to $400 in trade-in value.
iPad trade-ins are eligible for up to $335 in trade-in value.
iMac (and other laptops and MacBooks) are eligible for up to $1400 in trade-in value. Computer trade-in is only available via Apple’s online Trade In program.
Apple watches are eligible for up to $120 in trade-in value.
Trade-in values will also depend on the condition of your Apple device. A newer model iPhone that has physical damage will obviously not get full trade-in value.
And if your device doesn’t have trade-in value, you can still take it into an Apple Store for recycling. And you don’t have to go into an Apple Store, either! Simply let Apple know that you’re interested in the Trade In Program and they’ll provide a prepaid trade-in kit and shipping label; all you’ll need to do is the three steps mentioned above.
It’s as easy as that to both get value from your old Apple devices and make a difference for the environment!

Where Libraries are the Tourist Attractions
About a decade ago libraries across the world faced a dilemma. Their vital functions — to supply books and access to information for the public — were being replaced by Amazon, e-books and public Wi-Fi.
To fight for their survival, said Loida Garcia-Febo, president of the American Library Association, libraries tried to determine what other role they could play. “They invented these amazing new initiatives that are finally launching now,” she said. It took them this long to raise money and build them.
Libraries are certainly having a moment. In the past few years dozens of new high-profile libraries have opened close to home and across the world. And they certainly don’t resemble the book-depot vision of libraries from the past.
To attract visitors from home and abroad, many libraries have advanced, even quirky amenities. They have rooftop gardens, public parks, verandas, play spaces, teen centers, movie theaters, gaming rooms, art galleries, restaurants and more. The new library in Aarhus, Denmark, has a massive gong that rings whenever a mother in a nearby hospital gives birth.
Ms. Garcia-Febo knows of multiple libraries offering free work space for growing numbers of entrepreneurs. These aren’t just alternatives to coffee shops, spaces for people to pull out their laptops and work. The libraries have fancy meeting rooms for them to meet with potential clients, business librarians who can help them solve their financial challenges, and classes to teach them vital skills. At no cost, it’s a much cheaper option than spending hundreds of dollars for a desk at WeWork.
Libraries are supplying the public with other features they may not have at home. Twenty years ago that was books. Now it’s expensive new technology like 3D printers, laser cutters and broadcasting studios for podcasts and movies. Visitors are going to libraries to try before they buy. Other people just want to play with something that may not ever be able to afford.
Meeting diverse needs requires a sophisticated building, and many libraries are employing the world’s best architects to create showstopping designs. The new buildings are transforming skylines, going viral on social media and attracting tourists from all over the world. For many of these libraries the books are overshadowed by other amenities.
Here’s a look at some of the world’s newest and most creative libraries.
Helsinki, Finland
Helsinki Central Library Oodi
On Dec. 6, 2018, Finland celebrated its 101st anniversary of independence from Russia. One day before, the Finns received an anniversary present: a new central library named Oodi.
The library’s facade is made almost entirely of spruce, sourced from Finland. It has steel and glass structures mixed in, creating a soft, inviting look. The Helsinki government allocated 68 million euros to the project as well as a prime spot opposite the Finnish Parliament (the federal government provided 30 million more). A local firm, ALA Architects, won the commission over 543 other competitors.
Only one third of the 185,000-square-foot space is allocated to books (transported by specially designed robots); the rest is community space designed for meeting and doing.
At the “book heaven” on the top floor, visitors sprawl out among potted trees and on specially commissioned wool carpets. An urban workshop on the second floor has sewing machines, scanners and printers as well as laser cutters and soldering stations, with spaces allocated to sewing, making badges, and even playing the drums. There is room for pop-up markets and entrepreneurs can rent out work stations to meet with colleagues or clients. There are pop-up information desks where organizations can inform visitors about their work.
In March, Oodi welcomed its one millionth visitor. “We have tourists from all over the world visiting, but mainly from Europe mostly, China, Japan and America,” said Anna-Maria Soininvaara, the library’s director. “Usually they want to experience the Maker Space and ask where all the books are because the shelves are always half empty because they’re all on loan.”
Dublin, Ireland
Museum of Literature
On St. Stephen’s Green, the Central Park of Dublin, there are three grand Georgian buildings, one of which was built by the architect Richard Cassels (also known as Richard Castle) in the 1700s. Behind them are lush Victorian gardens that open up to more secret oases. One has a 200-year-old strawberry tree.
These structures were previously the original home of the University College Dublin, where many of Ireland’s most famous writers studied. On September 20, they will be open to the public for the first time, as home to the Museum of Literature Ireland, or MoLI.
Visitors will be able to see the old physics theater where James Joyce set a chapter of his “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” and the original print of “Ulysses,” famously called copy number 1. The bedroom of poet Gerard Manley Hopkins is still intact and will be available for viewing. Private letters from Joyce have been pulled out of storage for display.
The museum will also have a Joyce Research library and a reading room. There will be seats for working in the garden. “We are re-landscaping what we think is the only publicly accessible historic house garden in Dublin,” said Simon O’Connor, the museum’s director. “We take that responsibility seriously.”
He’s also excited about the museum’s radio station that will broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “Academics, musicians, and writers passing through the cities can stop in,” he said. “This is a living, breathing thing.”
Calgary’s New Central Library has a train running through it, as the site was designed to accommodate an active Light Rail Transit Line that already existed. The lobby is an arched bridge that lets locomotives go under it, and in “living rooms” patrons can sit on swirly chairs and watch them zoom by all day.
The library, which opened last November, was built to replace the existing downtown branch. “The old central library location was almost too small from the moment it opened,” said Kate Thompson, the vice president of development who led the project. “Calgary’s population has doubled since that time.” The new building offers 60 percent more space.
The library goes from “fun” to “serious” as visitors ascend the spiral staircase. On lower floors there are two cafes, a teen center, a children’s space and a 320-seat theater. The highest floor is the Great Reading Room, a more traditional library space surrounded by wooden planks. “There are no signs on the walls to ask for silence,” said Ms. Thompson. “But the room is always in a state of hushed silence as people study and read within the wooden oasis.”
Calgary is one of many Canadian cities getting a new super-library, as the locals call them. Ottawa is spending $192.9 million on a library scheduled to open in 2024 that will highlight views of the scenic Ottawa River and an exhibit space for the national archives of Canada. And in February 2020, Edmonton, Alberta, plans to debut its new Milner Library. Among its amenities will be a 65-inch multi-touch table in the lobby for visitors to play games, participate in surveys and make digital art.
Doha, Qatar
Qatar National Library
Designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, the Qatar National Library, which opened in April 2018, is all about symbolism, a physical representation of the country’s reverence for learning.
The entry way is full of stacks housing almost one million books, including 137,000 for children and 35,000 for teens. “The way they are built on an incline, it looks like they are coming out of the floor,” said Dr. Sohair Wastawy, the library’s executive director. “It elevates the books and the knowledge people are looking for.”
The 72-foot-tall ceiling is made entirely of glass, drilling home the message that light is essential to learning. The Heritage Library, composed of 11 rooms full of objects significant to Qatar and the region, is sunk 20 feet into the ground; it looks like an excavation site. “The symbolism is that heritage is the root of the nation, the root of the land,” Dr. Wastawy said.
What the library has in looks it also has in programming. Every month the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra performs for the public for free. This is only one of the 80 to 90 free events the library holds monthly. One of the most popular activities is a knitting group. Women come every Thursday and stay for four hours. There are labs for writing music, broadcast rooms with green screens, and play spaces for children of all ages.
“The public didn’t have that kind of community space, only cafes and shops to meet,” said Ms. Wastaway. “Now the library is the place the entire family can come for the entire day without getting bored.”
Tianjin, China
Tianjin Binhai Library
The Tianjin Binhai Library was built for practical purposes, to serve the Binhai New Area, which was formed in 2009 by the merger of three districts of Tianjin, a port city in northeastern China. It opened in October 2017 and has everything you would expect from a library: reading rooms, learning spaces, book storage and a large archive. But the majority of guests don’t go there to utilize the services. They visit from all over the world to see the fantastical architecture created by the Dutch firm MVRDV and local architects from the Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute.
“I think for the first week the library had around 10,000 visitors per day,” said Winy Maas, a founding partner with MVRDV and the architect responsible for the library. “People were lining up in the street to enter!”
The 363,000-square-foot space is painted floor to ceiling in pure white. In the middle of the space is a spherical auditorium nicknamed “the eye.” Around it are undulating floor-to-ceiling shelves that form waves. On the lower levels there are shelves with real books. On the upper levels the shelves contain aluminum plates with paintings of books on them, due in part to fire regulations.) Staircases are incorporated into the bookshelves: It’s a popular place for selfies and Instagram posts.
The space also has two rooftop decks offering views of the surrounding area. More traditional parts of the library are found to the side and below the attention-grabbing lobby.
The Central Library in Austin opened its doors on October 2017 with the Texas belief that bigger is always better. With six floors and 200,000-square-feet of space, it is twice the size of the former Old Faulk Central Library and located less than half a mile away.
The library sits next to Shoal Creek and Lady Bird Lake, areas of natural beauty. Many amenities take advantage of the location by focusing on the outdoors. Wrap-around-porches serve as reading rooms. The children’s room has a reading porch adjacent to it and a giant chess set just outside.
“The design gives you a sense of peace,” said Ms. Garcia-Febo, the library association president who recently visited the space. “It is very helpful for communities to have these spaces where they can feel peace.”
There is a seed library where users can check out seeds and plant them at home. The library even makes its own solar energy (30 percent of the building’s energy is generated this way) and collects rainwater in a 373,000 gallon cistern. It is used in the restrooms and for landscape irrigation.
One of the even quirkier features of the new library is a “technology petting zoo” on the fifth floor where visitors can play with new gadgets they don’t yet (or might not ever) own. They can draw on tablets, test out Philips Hue smart Wifi-lights, create their own model on a 3D printer, or record a song on a Spire Studio.
Oslo, Norway
Deichman Bjørvika
Construction of a new main branch of Deichman, Oslo’s public library, is currently underway in the newly established neighborhood of Bjørvika. Scheduled to open in the spring of 2020, it will serve as a public landmark, time capsule and entertainment hub.
This library is designed to see and be seen. The top of the building cantilevers, seen from downtown Oslo and the train station. Large, open entrances will be placed on the east, west, and south sides to welcome visitors from many directions. At night the library will change colors to reflect the events taking place that evening. Viewing areas inside the library will offer spectacular views of Oslo, the fjord, and the city’s green, rolling hills.
Inside the library, a room storing secret manuscripts won’t be opened until 2114, part of The Future Library Project conceived by the artist Katie Paterson. Every year from 2014 to 2114 a popular writer is creating a unique manuscript written on local paper (a forest of 1,000 trees was planted for the project.) After the 100 year period they can finally be read publicly.
More visitors will use the library’s entertainment facilities, including a large movie theater and a gaming zone that allows patrons to battle one another in public. (It’s one way to get teens in the door.)

American Airlines CEO Learned of Qatar’s Investment Interest at IATA Conference
Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways, wants his airline to be able to invest in American Airlines. Qatar Airways / Flickr.com
Skift Take: Don't look for this Qatar Airways investment in American Airlines to ever come to fruition. The American board would have to approve it, and both American's management and its unions are against it. Nice try, though.
— Dennis Schaal
Qatar has a feel-good slogan for its flagship airline: “Going places together.” But for the moment, the energy-rich Middle Eastern country seems to be getting exactly nowhere with American Airlines Group Inc.
State-owned Qatar Airways Ltd.’s surprise overture to acquire a major stake in American, a partner in the Oneworld alliance but an archrival on lucrative long-distance routes, was met with skepticism in the stock market after initial enthusiasm. American reacted with bewilderment, if not hostility, to the company’s interest.
“Puzzling at best and concerning at worst,’’ Chief Executive Officer Doug Parker said. The airline’s pilots union went further, calling it an act of “financial aggression” while flight attendants said it was a threat to their jobs.
The development marks a new twist in a long battle between U.S. carriers and their Persian Gulf rivals over accusations of unfair competition. The move is playing out against the backdrop of renewed efforts by President Donald Trump’s administration to mediate the simmering crisis between Qatar and some of the closest U.S. allies in the region, notably Saudi Arabia.
The brash proposal of American’s would-be investor also underscores the efforts of Qatar Airways to bolster its portfolio of global airline interests and expand its U.S. footprint. While CEO Akbar Al Baker once taunted his U.S. rivals, he’s now angling for an equity stake in American similar to the one held by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
Cancun Meeting
Al Baker told Parker of the Gulf carrier’s interest in American when the two men met during an airline industry conference this month in Cancun, Mexico, said Matt Miller, a spokesman for the Fort Worth, Texas-based company.
“While anyone can purchase our shares in the open market, we aren’t particularly excited about Qatar’s outreach,” Parker said in a letter to staff Thursday. “Of course, it may just be that Qatar Airways views American Airlines as a solid financial investment,” he cheekily ended the memo, crediting his employees.
Qatar responded in kind. The Gulf carrier is happy to see that Parker agrees with Qatar “that American Airlines is a solid financial investment,” it tweeted Friday.
Even with the potential investment, Parker vowed to continue a campaign against Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad Airways PJSC. American, Delta Air Lines Inc. and United Continental Holdings Inc. have railed against the three Persian Gulf carriers for years, saying that $50 billion in government support have enabled them to compete unfairly.
‘Driving Buy-In’
Another obstacle for any American-Qatar rapprochement is opposition by the U.S. carrier’s labor unions, said Hunter Keay, an analyst at Wolfe Research. The threat of lower-paying, non-union jobs at Qatar Airways would roil American’s employees, upsetting Parker’s overriding goal of winning the trust of employees.
“We don’t see it happening,’’ Keay said in a note to clients. Parker’s “single biggest thing right now is driving buy-in and trust from his employees.”
Qatar Airways is interested in buying a 10 percent stake, American said in a regulatory filing. That would be worth about $2.4 billion based on American’s current market value. In a statement after the filing, the Doha-based airline said it planned to make a passive investment of as much as 4.75 percent, saying it saw “a strong investment opportunity.”
American rose only 1.1 percent to $48.97 at the close in New York after surging as much as 4.4 percent in earlier trading, the biggest intraday gain in six weeks.
Purchasing Stakes
Establishing a holding in American would extend an investment strategy in which the Qatari airline has purchased significant stakes in IAG SA, the parent of British Airways, and Latam Airlines Group SA, which are both close allies of the the U.S. carrier.
Accumulating American shares via the open market would parallel Qatar’s approach to building its IAG holding, which stands at 20 percent, making the Gulf carrier the No. 1 investor in a group that also owns Spain’s Iberia and Aer Lingus of Ireland. Qatar, American, IAG and Latam are all members of the Oneworld global alliance.
“This may buy a little bit of silence in the sense of complaints about Middle Eastern carriers’ expansion and growth,” said Robert Mann, an aviation consultant. He added that the move may also help Qatar get a bigger chunk of trans-Atlantic business travel dollars following its investment in IAG.
An investment in American could also serve as “a stepping stone to more access to the U.S.,” Cowen & Co. analyst Helane Becker said in a note. Still, given the “political overhang,” Gulf carriers may also consider deals with smaller U.S. airlines such as Alaska Air Group Inc. or JetBlue Airways Corp., she said.
Qatar Airways has remained bullish on the U.S., even after Trump’s attempt to block travel from six predominantly Muslim nations and a U.S. ban on carrying laptop and tablet computers onto flights from some Middle Eastern airports, including Doha.
The airline vowed to continue its global expansion even as its state owner gets punished by an escalating political standoff that’s threatening to choke Qatar’s economy. A move this month by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates to shut down flights to Qatar forced Qatar Airways to ground more than 50 daily departures — or about 10 percent of its total — according to scheduling firm OAG.
Parker’s Resolve
For their part, the big U.S. airlines show no signs of softening their opposition.
Delta held a rally Wednesday for employees in Atlanta, featuring a new documentary outlining the threat from the Gulf airlines. Delta canceled its sponsorship of Atlanta’s Fox Theatre last year after the venue hosted a Qatar Airways event with an appearance by Jennifer Lopez, to celebrate the opening of a route between the U.S. city and Qatar. At the time, Al Baker said the route would “rub salt in the wounds’’ of Delta.
Parker vowed to redouble lobbying efforts against the Gulf carriers even after Qatar Airways’ interest in buying a stake.
“We will not be discouraged or dissuaded from our full court press in Washington, D.C., to stand up to companies that are illegally subsidized by their governments,’’ Parker said in a letter to employees. “If anything, this development strengthens our resolve to ensure the U.S. government enforces its trade agreements regarding fair competition with Gulf carriers.”
