I have been in a terrible slump lately. I had been considering not writing on tumblr about this. But I realize that I need to scream into my beloved void to get something off my chest. It is a part of my coping mechanism now.
So I know that going to a different place for job/studies is something many people do and for a lot of people it is indeed very difficult. But I will talk about my feelings here. I was recently given a different city as my base location for work. And I feel shattered. I feel like a chunk of my soul is being yanked away from me.
I am completely open to the idea of going to a different place for any project. But the base location being changed is just shattering. More so because as far as my communications with them was going it seemed like I would get Kolkata. But suddenly it all just fell apart.
I am really close to my family. I have my two sets of grandparents who I love. And both live within 5 mins walking distance from me. And I visit them very frequently. The thought of not being able to do that is TERRIFYING. Secondly my parents need help with managing the household and my grandparents. They would never say that out loud and support me in whatever is best for me but I know that they do and it is exhausting. I want to be actively present. My partner is also in Kolkata and the thought of being away from him sucks. I know long distance relationship is a thing. But I do not desire it if it can be avoided.
Secondly I had a plan about what I want to do with life. I had plans for saving for things. My financial plan would crash if I have to move to the new place. I will barely be able to save anything. All my plans would be completely snuffed out.
Secondly my city....I love my city so freaking much. It is a part of me. I do not want to leave her behind. This is home.
I am trying my level best to change my location to Kolkata. And I am hoping and praying so hard. I have a habit of writing my prayers on tumblr. And this is my prayer. Please let me not be taken away from home. Please. Just PLEASE. I feel desperate. And I have not been able to function. I can barely function. I am so scared all the time. I had so many plans on how to spend my post college times. But I just cannot. Waking up is so difficult. My room has not been cleaned for weeks. And I just cannot bring myself to do it. Everything feels so dusty. I cannot draw. I cannot write. I cannot take pictures. I cannot feel things. I am tired and sad and shattered. Please just let me not be yanked out of home.

BEST DIRECTORS IN CINEMA-3
Hi everyone! This blog is going to be the 3rd part of 8 Part Series of who I think are the Best Directors Cinema as ever seen
And today I will be talking about
SATYAJIT RAY
Tumblr media
Satyajit Ray (born May 2, 1921, Calcutta [now Kolkata], India—died April 23, 1992, Calcutta) was a Bengali motion-picture director, writer, and illustrator who brought the Indian cinema to world recognition with Pather Panchali (1955; The Song of the Road) and its two sequels, known as the Apu Trilogy. As a director, Ray was noted for his humanism, his versatility, and his detailed control over his films and their music. He was one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century.
(Early Life)
Ray was an only child whose father died in 1923. His grandfather was a writer and illustrator, and his father, Sukumar Ray, was a writer and illustrator of Bengali nonsense verse. Ray grew up in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and was looked after by his mother. He entered a government school, where he was taught chiefly in Bengali, and then studied at Presidency College, Calcutta’s leading college, where he was taught in English. By the time he graduated in 1940, he was fluent in both languages. In 1940 his mother persuaded him to attend art school at Santiniketan, Rabindranath Tagore’s rural university northwest of Calcutta. There Ray, whose interests had been exclusively urban and Western-oriented, was exposed to Indian and other Eastern art and gained a deeper appreciation of both Eastern and Western culture, a harmonious combination that is evident in his films.
(His Famous Works)
Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955) won eleven international prizes, including the inaugural Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. This film, along with Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) (1959), form The Apu Trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, and editing, and designed his own credit titles and publicity material. He also authored several short stories and novels, primarily for young children and teenagers. Popular characters created by Ray include Feluda the sleuth, Professor Shonku the scientist, Tarini Khuro the storyteller, and Lalmohan Ganguly the novelist.
(Filmmaking Style)
His Filmmaking
Ray had been subconsciously paying a tribute to Jean Renoir throughout his career, who influenced him the most.Ray considered script-writing to be an integral part of direction. Initially he refused to make a film in any language other than Bengali. In his two non-Bengali feature films, he wrote the script in English; translators adapted it into Hindustani under Ray's supervision. The narrative structure of Ray's films are represented by musical forms such as sonata, fugue and rondo. Kanchenjunga, Nayak and Aranyer Din Ratri are examples of this structure.
(His Filmography)
Ray made over 36 feature film in his 4 decade long. He made movies such as Pather Panchali in 1955,Aparajito in 1956,Parash Pathar and Jalsaghar in 1958, Apur Sansar in 1959, Devi in 1960. He made movies such as Teen Kanya in 1961, Kanchenjungha and Abhijan in 1962,Mahanagar in 1963,Charulata and Two I'm 1964,Kapurush-0-Mahapurush in 1965,Nayak in 1966,Chiriyakhana in 1967,Goopy Gyne & Bagha Byne in 1969,Aranyer Din Ratri and Pratiwandi in 1970, Seemabaddha and Sikkim in 1971,Inner Eyes in 1972,Ashani Sanket in 1973,Sonar Kella in 1974,Jana Aranyw in 1975,Bala in 1976,Shatranj ka Khilari in 1977,Joi Baba Felunath in 1979,Hirak Rajar Deshe and Pikoo in 1980,Sadgati in 1981,Ghare Bhare in 1984,Sukumar Ray in 1987,Ganashatru and Shakha Proshakha in 1990,Agantuk in 1990.

He also won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival
(Legacy)
Ray is considered one of the greatest film directors of all time. He is a cultural icon in India and in Bengali communities worldwide. Following his death, the city of Calcutta came to a virtual standstill, as hundreds of thousands of people gathered around his house to pay their last respects. Ray's influence has been widespread and deep in Bengali cinema; many Bengali directors, including Aparna Sen, Rituparno Ghosh and Gautam Ghose as well as Vishal Bhardwaj, Dibakar Banerjee, Shyam Benegal and Sujoy Ghosh from Hindi cinema in India, Tareq Masud and Tanvir Mokammel in Bangladesh, and Aneel Ahmad in England, have been influenced by his craft.Beyond India, filmmakers Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, James Ivory, Abbas Kiarostami, Elia Kazan, William Wyler,François Truffaut, John Huston, Carlos Saura, Isao Takahata, Oliver Stone,Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson,Danny Boyle and Christopher Nolan.

Same idiot here for information on what are like the culturally appropriate things to do for pujo in Bengal
(non Bengalis here's your guide to act native to pujo madness)
So, what IS pujo?
Following mahalaya, (if you don't know what that is, here's the infodump i did;)
Devispaksha begins. The goddess is returning home. There's a different side to this story however.
THE MYTHOLOGICAL SIDE AND WHAT THAT GREEN THING YOU SEE AT DURGA'S FEET IN EVERY PANDAL IS.
So, mahishasur was believed to be a monster. He one day decided to go into the depths of a jungle and sit for an intense tapasya. So he did. He prayed to lord brahma for months and months. He was covered in ivy and moss, Insects grew on him but he stayed firm. For months he prayed, without food or water. Brahma, impressed by his tenacity appeared before him. Mahishasur asked for the boon of immortality. Brahma granted him his wish. "You shall not be killed by any man in heaven, hell, or earth." Strengthened by his boon, Mahishasur attacked Indrapuri, The court of God Indra. He captured his throne. The gods turned to brahma for help. Brahma, on realising his mistake, went to consult with Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. the gods decided that as mahishasur couldn't be destroyed by any MAN, they needed to create a female source of power to end him. The gods gathered. They collected their powers and from the blinding lights, emerged the goddess of feminine power-Durga. She was bestowed with weapons; she was given strikingly beautiful features, And then, armed with a hundred hands and skilled in hundred different weapons, she went on the fight. Mahishasur, initially enthralled by her beauty, proposed to marry her; but she declared war. The battle went on for days. At the end, Durga's vahan, the lion pounced on the asur, Durga stepped on him and piercing her trishul through his heart, emerged victorious. The evil was dead. The power that laid within the flashing eyes of the goddess had won.
Tumblr media
GOT IT. SO WHAT DO I DO DURING PUJAS?
Puja celebrations usually don't start in it's full-fledged glory till atleast the fifth day (panchami). it continues till the tenth day (Dashami).
If you live in kolkata during pujas, GO OUT. The whole city is bedazzled in lights, there are fairs through the city. Nobody sits at home; everybody is out on the roads sparkling and dressed to nines. Wear your best dresses and walk through the streets at night till the sun comes up. The most major part of pujas is pandal hopping. Thousands of pandals with budgets of crores are made at various spots in the city. These are pandals as huge as marketplaces; each with different themes. There are competitions every year between them, based on which pandal had the best durga idol, which had the best theme, which had the best structure, etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pujas are the time when Kaash ful(the white flowers I clicked last year in the fourth picture) are in full bloom, there are lotuses in bloom in ponds; nature is bedecked in her best jewels.
Keeping in spirit with the goddess returning home, bengalis usually return home during pujas. it's a time to visit families, revsit old friends and have complete unabashed fun. It's time to gobble down on junk foods as much as you can. Oh and girls, on Ashtami(or the eighth day), make sure you put on your best sarees for arti and bedazzle the guys on the road;)
Despite the intense commercialization of the pujas that has happened in the last few years, it still remains an extremely core emotion for us bengalis. It's the time of homecoming, of taking a break and reconnecting to our roots every year. it's the time of visiting family, of recreating old memories, of re-living new and old romances. It's the whole world celebrating you coming home. It's the world celebrating the power that lays inside every woman- a mother, a sister, a wife.

“You didn’t fail—your idea failed. Try something new.”
Tumblr media
Last week, David and I were invited to be delegates at a G20 event at Guru Nanak Dev University, which is just up the road from Khalsa College.
One of the panels at this event at GNDU was on entrepreneurship. While this is not exactly my field, I am glad I was compelled (by my status as a delegate) to attend. One of the panelists, an esteemed professor of business from Mumbai, offered the thought that I have chosen as my title.
I would say that my idea—as conceived—has failed.
Without getting into too much detail, I will simply say that several factors have contributed to this: my own naivety at what could be accomplished with a group of actors with whom I do not share a common language (unlike Kerala—where I did my first Fulbright), some particularly nasty departmental politics that became clear to David and me a few weeks after arrival, a lack of communication concerning hindrances to my project work plan, and (what I perceive) as the global effects of COVID on the current college age student. One toxic presence has done more than anything else to dismantle what I planned to accomplish. I have kept quiet about this in my blog and hoped for the best.
I am disheartened, but I also need to look at what my essential goals were for this project:
•     To connect young people with survivors of Partition in order to foster understanding about the experiences of those who came before them
•     To guide a group of young artists in creating original material based on interviews with Partition survivors
•     To provide a way for said young artists to share their original work with an audience.
All this will be accomplished.
•     I have accompanied students on interviews with people in their 80’s and 90’s who survived Partition, and witnessed the effect their stories and these connections have on my students. I have been deeply moved by the experience of sitting in the presence of these survivors.
•     David and I are working with these young actors to create, albeit slowly, original monologues out of those interviews. I understand that students at Khalsa College (and perhaps more widely in India) are not as accustomed to writing their own material, so this is a big “ask” we are making. Many are rising to the challenge beautifully. And some very generous translators have helped us to understand what is being written.
•     And we will have a sharing. It will not be a full-scale production, as we first envisioned. Given the amount of rehearsal time that has been taken from us due to various roadblocks- a full production would not be possible. We have been given a goal of the first week in April (before exam preparation begins). With that date in mind, we had to let go of the idea of a full production last week. But we will have an invited sharing at the college, and I also hope to have a lecture/demonstration at the Partition Museum and a local cultural center. I need to remind myself that if David had not been able to accompany me, these sharings would have likely been all I would have been able to offer.
I am turning my focus to things I can control (and my little living space has been getting daily cleanings-- this seems to be my way of gaining some control.) Following the advice, I am "trying something new."
•     I am booking performances of The Belle of Amherst at several colleges in Kolkata, one in Assam, and (hopefully) one theatre in Nepal.
•     I have been awarded a regional travel grant to spend two weeks teaching voice and speech at an actor training program in Nepal.
•     And I have been invited to serve on the panel to interview Fulbright applicants among Tibetan immigrants in Dharamshala in May.
I have met a lot of great people here. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity. And my students are absolutely lovely people. When I am with them (those who show up) my spirit cannot resist being lifted. So-- I’ll share a few pictures of these exuberant, brave young people—and move on. The idea failed. I did not fail. And I believe these young people will take something meaningful away from this experience—as I know David and I will.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I “owe” you all a post about our wonderful return to Kerala. Maybe now that I have shared the not-so-pleasant, I can go back and share those beautiful memories!

Former Fossils Bassist Chandramouli Biswas Dies By Suicide At 48, Police Say 'He Battled Long-Term Depression'
Chandramouli Biswas, a celebrated musician associated with Fossils, Golok, and Zombie Cage Control, was found dead in his Kolkata residence.
Tumblr media
The Kolkata music scene mourns the tragic loss of bassist Chandramouli Biswas, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 48, as per the Times of India. Best known for his association with iconic bands Fossils, Golok, and Zombie Cage Control, Biswas was discovered at his rented home near Wellington by Golok lead vocalist Mohul Chakraborty, who immediately alerted authorities and locals.
Chakraborty revealed that he grew concerned when Biswas did not respond to his calls throughout the day. "I contacted one of his close friends, and we went to his home together, only to find him dead. It’s a huge loss for the Bengal music industry," he said.
Chandramouli had left a promising engineering career to follow his passion for music. He played a significant role in shaping Kolkata’s independent music landscape.
According to the police, preliminary investigations indicated that Chandramouli had been battling depression for several years due to financial difficulties. A cop said that they spoke to his relatives and friends, who said he was “depressed for some years and was also undergoing treatment”. Officers recovered a suicide note stating that no one was responsible for his death. The note’s handwriting is currently under verification, and his body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
Fossils manager Rupsha Dasgupta shared that Chandramouli was part of the band from 2000 until 2018, first as a guitarist and later as a bassist, before leaving due to health reasons. She expressed her sorrow, saying, "Chandra had a massive fan base among young listeners. His death is both shocking and heartbreaking. Beyond his musical talent, he was an incredibly cheerful and sociable person who touched many lives."
Chandramouli updated his Facebook profile picture just hours before his death. He is survived by his parents.

[ad_1] Mohammed Siraj (Source: BCCI) It was very much like old times. Setting the alarm for 4:30am to get up and watch cricket in Australia. Yes, now it’s work, shows and more, but the passion remains the same. While for most Bengalis, it is a hot cup of Darjeeling tea, ‘monkey cap’ and the morning papers in a decently chilly Kolkata winter, for me, it is Test cricket and what India does at the Gabba. Bowl first was the call from India, and though Australia negotiated the ten-plus overs bowled without undue alarms, they haven’t managed to race away either. India’s bowlers would surely want to course correct on day 2, be a lot closer to the stumps and make the batters play more. Seek that elusive outside edge and make the most of the moisture. Despite the best drainage facilities on offer, there has to be moisture, which is what the bowlers will want to exploit. The batters, on the other hand, will want to battle through the first two hours, for they will know that thereafter, runs are surely on offer. That’s the essence of Test cricket – a battle of attrition with neither side wanting to give an inch. And yes, I will wake up again, same time Sunday, and make my Darjeeling tea to watch the battle resume under cloudy skies. For India, I’d like Rohit to start with Akash Deep. He looked good in the little time he bowled and, more importantly, his style suits the new ball. He will land it on the seam and try and extract movement. He did beat the edge multiple times on day 1 and could indeed be the surprise package for India on day 2. There were a lot of questions on social media asking about Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness. The reason being that he was clocking in the mid-130s and not the early 140s that he usually does. From my understanding, Bumrah was trying to bowl full and get maximum movement. In doing so, he may have cut down a few yards of pace. But then, he knows his body the best and, if need be, can ramp it up the moment he deems it necessary. I did not find anything wrong with Bumrah and feel reasonably confident that he will do the job on Day 2. Rohit lauded Siraj for his performance in Cape Town. (Source: X.com) That’s what brings me to Mohammed Siraj. Yet again, he was booed by the hostile Gabba crowd and that should be enough to get him going. Siraj carrying the Indian flag around the Gabba and the entire team marching behind him in January 2021 is one of the most enduring picture postcards in the history of Indian cricket. In that one instant, he had ceased to be a Muslim or a Hindu. His religion did not matter. He had been appropriated as the vision of Indianness that we all believe in. Siraj is now back at the Gabba. And one can say with certainty that the abuse and barracking will not matter to him. Siraj is the new India that has learnt to speak up. Give it back, as they say. It is no longer about soft peddling. Or just taking it. Siraj will not hold back. The Travis Head incident is proof of where he stands. He did not flinch in calling Head a liar and held his ground. At no point was he overawed. He knows it will be hostile, but that’s what brings the best out of him. The competitiveness and the pushback. In every sense, it is a new India. A confident group, which knows that they have found a voice in the world. That’s what the real Siraj legacy is about. What to Know Before Going Backpacking in India
Tumblr media
Backpacking in India is an experience like no other, offering diverse landscapes, cultural richness, and vibrant traditions. However, the country’s vastness and unique cultural practices can be challenging for first-time travelers. Here’s what you should know to make the most of your backpacking journey through India.
1. Choose the Right Season
India has a tropical climate with three main seasons: summer (March to June), monsoon (June to September), and winter (October to February). Winter is the best season for most of India, with cooler, more pleasant weather. In summer, northern and mountain regions like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are more comfortable, while southern regions like Kerala can be very hot. What to Know Before Going Backpacking In India
Monsoon season can be unpredictable, but it’s also a great time to visit lush landscapes in regions like Kerala and Goa. Always check the local weather of each destination, as conditions vary widely across the country.
2. Plan Your Route but Keep it Flexible
India is massive, and there’s something to see at every turn. North India offers the Himalayas, deserts, and iconic cities like Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra, while South India is known for its beaches, backwaters, and temples.
A popular route is the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur), perfect for first-time visitors. Beyond that, you might explore Rajasthan, Kerala, Goa, and the Himalayas.
Keep some flexibility in your itinerary, as plans can change due to local festivals, weather, or simply the desire to stay a little longer in a place you love.
3. Understand Cultural Sensitivities and Dress Modestly
India has a conservative culture, especially in smaller towns and rural areas. Dressing modestly is respectful and will also make you feel more comfortable. For women, covering shoulders and legs is a good idea, while men should avoid sleeveless shirts and very short shorts.
Certain religious sites may have dress codes, such as covering your head in Sikh temples or removing your shoes in Hindu temples. Always observe and follow local norms.
4. Learn Basic Local Etiquette
Greeting with a “Namaste” (a respectful bow with hands together) is common and appreciated. Indian culture emphasizes respect for elders, so greeting them first is customary.
Many Indians are curious about visitors, so don’t be surprised if locals want to talk to you or take pictures with you. While it’s fine to engage, use your judgment and always be polite if you need privacy.
5. Prepare for a Different Pace and Expect Crowds
Cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata are some of the busiest in the world, with bustling streets, noise, and heavy traffic. In India, there’s a certain organized chaos that may take time to adjust to.
Crowded places are common, especially around festivals and markets. Be prepared for sensory overload but also take time to slow down, particularly in rural or mountainous regions where life has a calmer pace.
6. Get Travel Insurance and Take Health Precautions
Travel insurance is a must. Medical care in India can be affordable, but for emergencies or serious injuries, having insurance will provide peace of mind.
Common vaccinations for travelers to India include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Carry a basic first-aid kit, and only drink bottled or purified water to avoid water-borne illnesses.
7. Know How to Stay Safe
Pickpocketing and scams can happen in crowded tourist areas, so be vigilant with your belongings and avoid showing valuables. Keep your passport, money, and phone secure.
Women, especially solo travelers, may feel more comfortable dressing modestly and avoiding isolated areas at night. In larger cities, use reputable cab services, like Uber or Ola, and share your trip details with someone you trust.
8. Embrace Local Transportation
Indian Railways is one of the world’s largest rail networks, offering an economical way to travel long distances. For a unique experience, try a sleeper train, but book in advance for popular routes.
Buses are also common, though they can be crowded and less comfortable. In cities, auto-rickshaws (tuk-tuks) are affordable for short distances—just agree on the fare before starting your journey or use the meter if available.
9. Experience Indian Cuisine Carefully
Indian food is delicious but can be spicy for newcomers. Start with mild dishes if you’re not used to spicy foods and carry digestive tablets if you have a sensitive stomach.
Street food is a must-try, but choose vendors with high turnover to ensure freshness. Always drink bottled water and avoid ice if you’re unsure of the water source.
10. Get a Local SIM Card and Stay Connected
Staying connected is helpful for navigation, booking accommodations, and staying in touch. Getting a local SIM card with data is affordable, and major cities offer good network coverage.
Wi-Fi is available in hotels, cafes, and some public spaces, but for reliable access while on the move, a SIM card from companies like Jio, Airtel, or Vodafone is recommended.
11. Be Open-Minded and Patient
India is a diverse country with many languages, customs, and lifestyles. Embrace the differences, and you’ll find India welcoming and enriching.
Things may not always go as planned, but patience and a sense of adventure will help you enjoy the journey, even in unexpected situations.
Conclusion
Backpacking in India can be a life-changing experience with stunning sights, warm people, and rich culture. It’s a land of contrasts that invites travelers to explore, learn, and be inspired. By understanding local customs, preparing well, and keeping an open mind, you’ll be set for an unforgettable adventure across one of the world’s most fascinating countries. Safe travels!
