The simplicity of Roque’s designs hails from Addison’s other job as a personal shopper, after hearing the refrain, “I want to be comfortable,” day after day from clients. Roque’s circular pendants and seed pearl rings have a distinctly West Coast, laid-back vibe which is also reflected in the brand’s commitment to sustainability – all pieces are made from recycled metals and gems.

The LA-based Insta-boutique The Corner Store has gained feverish fans for it’s rebelliously romantic aesthetic – think Gunne Sax prairie dresses paired with black lipstick – ever since it opened in 2016. Founder Stacey Nishimoto built the business from the ground up, doing all the buying, styling and photography for the store herself – all while being a single parent to her adorable son, Gus. (She also happens to be BFFs with the girl boss herself, Sophia Amoruso!) In Nishimoto’s nimble hands, 1980s power silhouettes meld into demure gowns and romantic ruffles take on a slightly threatening edge. Bonus: one of their models looks identical to The Shining-era Shelley Duvall.

Now the bicoastal duo – Gasbarrino lives in New York and Anderson in L.A. – creates silky separates for the minimalist set. The brand subscribes to a philosophy they describe as “radically natural” in both materials and fit. All of the designs are made from certified organic silk and are underwire-free (no more pinching!) – support is delivered through a triple-lined empire band. The gauzy bras are part of Discover This, an eco-conscious pop-up at select Hudson’s Bay locations running until April and featuring sustainable brands such as Kotn, Naadam and Humming Kraft.

ZAZAII comes from a Bini phrase meaning eloquent, articulate and dedicated, and the boutique founded by former lawyer Isoken Ogiemwonyi is just that. In 2009, Ogiemwonyi won the British Council Award for Young Creative Entrepreneur of the Year in 2012 and went on to found ZAZAII in 2015. The boutique has two physical location: Lagos, Nigeria and Toronto – though the website ships worldwide. By opening in Toronto, Ogiemwonye hopes to bring her roster of African designers, “as rich as the continent we take our heritage from,” to a wider global marketplace and shine a spotlight on talented African designers. We’d say she doing a pretty darn good job.

Gucci Just Opened a New Outlet Store Outside Toronto

If you’ve ever wanted to acquire runway-ready Gucci shoes at steep discounts, then you’ll be elated that the brand has just opened an outlet store at Toronto Premium Outlets, a giant shopping complex which, confusingly enough, is a 45-minute drive outside the city. In addition to Gucci, the outdoor mall is opening up an additional 140,000 square feet of retail, including Montblanc, Zadig et Voltaire and the first-ever Aritzia outlet store in North America. The CEO of Victoria’s Secret Has Resigned

It’s been a bad week for Victoria’s Secret. The brand’s Chief Marketing Officer Ed Razek was slammed after suggesting that trans women had no place in the lingerie runway show because it “is a fantasy,” and now, the CEO of the flagging brand, Jan Singer, has resigned. According to WWD, online sales flatlined in October and dipped 7% in stores. Considering the sheer number of thinkpieces questioning the value of the Victoria’s Secret runway show in a post-#MeToo world, it’s clear that the brand is in need of a dramatic reimagining. The purported “fantasy” they provide has always been about valorizing a specific body type (thin, voluptuous) to the exclusion of all others, which fails to hold any resonance with millennial women. Whoever steps up to the plate as Victoria’s Secret next CEO should be looking to Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty line as a model of success rather than the company’s own milquetoast past. (WWD)

A Pendant Once Owned by Marie Antoinette Sold for $36 Million

It was estimated to sell for $5 million. It ended up selling for $36 million. ‘It’ is an opulent diamond and pearl pendant that once belonged to ill-fated French Queen Marie Antoinette. During the French Revolution, much of the monarch’s jewellery was smuggled out of the country for safekeeping, before her legendary demise on the guillotine in 1793. Antoinette’s daughter, Marie-Thérèse, reclaimed the jewellery in 1796 after being released from three years of solitary confinement, and the jewels were kept in the family for over 200 years, until this current auction. In an interview with Business of Fashion, Cardi described her intentions for the collaboration thusly, “I want to make these women look so happy—so radiant, sexy, so corporate and poppin‘. By opening in Toronto, Ogiemwonye hopes to bring her roster of African designers, “as rich as the continent we take our heritage from,” to a wider global marketplace and shine a spotlight on talented African designers. We’d say she doing a pretty darn good job.
