About Lewis Nixon’s mother Doris Ryer Nixon (Mrs Stanhope Nixon)
Source: mostly from old newspapers and digitized documents (I can’t guarantee the accuracy because they are fragmented information. I will just put it out there for someone may find some interesting useful backstories).
Doris Ryer was born on Oct 1 1894.
Her father Fletcher Ryer was a wealthy pioneer agriculturalist in California. He owned 6,600-acre (27 km2) ranch on Ryer Island, which was named in their honor. Because Doris was his only heiress, this ranch all went to Doris and then to Lewis Nixon III and ultimately to Grace Nixon. It's an agricultural (instead of livestocks) ranch. They grew crops, fruits and vegetables such as wheat, milo, safflower, pears, apples, cherries, grapes, tomatoes and asparagus. They produced such large amount of asparagus that Doris's mother, Mrs Ryer was nicknamed Asparagus Queen back then. This farm is still up and running today, managed by Clarence Hester from 1950s to 1990s (Nix' war buddy, the regimental S3, the one who wrestled with Dick in that photo), after him by his son Thomas Hester.
Doris was educated at Madame Payen's school in Paris from 1906 to 1914 (her entire high school).
Fletcher Ryer died an early death in 1911 (when Doris was about 16). Doris was close to her mother Mrs Blanche Ryer. Mrs Blanche Ryer, though very charming, married very very young. As a pretty, attractive, wealthy widow she determined to ensure that her daughter Doris have a brilliant "bellehood" as a girl. She took Doris to tour around the world. For example, in Sep1913, they traveled to Russia to present Doris at the court of Tsar Nicholas II (Very inconvenient timing, I have to say).
Doris was very sweet and attractive, with pretty black eyes. Her mother has always been most ambitious for her handsome daughter. She aimed to marry Doris to British aristocracy. Doris was presented at Buckingham Palace in 1914, wearing "a white satin princess gown embroidered in pearls and brilliants". Mrs Ryer has had her eye on several members of the British aristocracy for Doris, "but this cruel war, of course, smashed all of her well-laid plans to smithereens." She has to stoop so low to choose from American heirs.
Doris married Stanhope in Jan 1917 in New York at Church of Heavenly Rest. Their wedding was the social event of the year. Guests from coast to coast attended Nixon-Ryer wedding.
The bride's costume was soft white satin, made in combination with pearl embroidered net. She worn a lovely veil, the same that had been worn by her grandmother at her wedding, which was held in place with a band of diamonds. Her only other ornament was a necklace of diamonds with a large pear-shaped diamond pendant, the gift of the bridegroom.
Because the father of bride has died, she was given away by governor of New York Charles S. Whitman. Among those in attendance were the Brazilian ambassador and Argentine ambassador.
After the wedding the new couple went to Bermuda for honeymoon and then they lived at 52 East Fifty-second Street NYC (but later moved to 46 East 65 Street). In 1920 census, the household of the new couple included Stanhope the head of the house, Doris the wife, Lewis the one and half yr old old baby son, and a butler and 3 maids. They also have a suburb house at 167 Grange Ave, New Jersey (a 20-room estate, equiped with oil burning hot water heat, a 4-car garage, servants quarters, a boat house and a stable).
After marrying off her daughter to the Nixons, Mrs Blanche Ryer re-married in 1920 to Clifford Erskine-Bolst, a British conservative party politician. Mr Erskine-Bolst was elected to the British House of Commons in 1923 and again in 1931. To help him win the election, she made generous donations to King George's Hospital in England. She campained hard for him, making speeches and appealing to the constituency in the South Hackney district.
In 1920s, mama Doris bought a villa at Riviera France from the late Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia. She lived there until her death in 1939 (This villa went to Nix. But he didn't like living there, too much hassle to open the house. He prefered to stay at the hotel Cap Estel. In 1950s he leased it to the Kennedys).
Doris and Stanhope seemed to be ok in 1920s. They attended social events together and traveled to England together. After Lew, they had a baby boy in 1922 (who tragically died in 3 months. Doris' mother went to New York to be with her.) Then they had Blanche Nixon in Aug 1924 (also born in NYC). While living in NYC, it seems little Lew was often spending time with his grandfather. Grandpa often took him to play at central park. For example, he took Lew to that model yacht regatta in central park when he was 7, and to skate in central park in Jan 1927 when lew was 8. In 1927, Doris took 2 yr old Blanche to France to visit her mother, but she didn't take Lew (maybe he was too naughty?). Anyway, Doris took Blanche to see grandma almost every year but Lew was only with them on one visit when he was 10 yr old.
Doris appeared to be lonely and out of place in the social circle of New York. Here is a social note about her in 1929: "A remarkable girl with her embroidery frame, actually engaged in a simple, normal occupation in a land where the atmosphere is charged with hang-overs, gambling-losses and mistrust. Nobody around here looks twice at a woman with mauve hair like Madame de Roch, or at a man with ear-rings and a bracelet on his ankle. But let a girl take out a half-finished centerpiece and commence embroidering and every lorgnette in the crowd is whipped into place."
At the end of 1920s, Doris seemed to be so unhappy to live on the east coast anymore, and she still regarded CA to be her real home. Stanhope sold their house in New Jersey and bought a new house in Montecito (also a mansion with a large stable and everything). In the 1930 census they were living at 180 Cold Spring Road, montecito, CA (Stanhope, Doris, Lewis (11yr), Blanche(5yr), and a French governess, and 2 servants). Lew attended boarding school at Cate School in Santa Barbara.
In social notes in 1930s, Stanhope and Doris mainly attended social events in CA (Santa Barbara and San Francisco), they also travel to New York to visit Mr and Mrs Lewis Nixon Sr.. The family traveled a lot, not only back and forth between east-west coasts, but also trips abroad. Doris always took Blanche with her, but Lew traveled on his own even when he was as young as 15 yr old. It appears that Doris and Stanhope's relationship has gone sour in 1930s. For example, in this 1934 social note: "The Stanhope Nixons will spend the Christmas holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Nixon. Mr Nixon will return to California on Jan 1, and Mrs Nixon will sail for Europe to spend six months on the Riviera with her mother." (almost as if Doris was running away from Stanhope and hide in France after briefly met him on Xmas day. Meanwhile 15 yr old Lew was at boarding school in CA).
In 1940 census, Doris and Blanche were still living at 180 Cold Spring Road, montecito, CA (with a housekeeper, a cook and a maid). Stanhope was no longer in this household. Maybe they have separated. Lew was also not in this household for he has left for college.
Among the CA high society, Doris was a all-around likable person: "Doris is always bubbling over with enthusiasm, her joy of living and her wit making her a welcome guest at any affair". She was very enthusiastic about opera (and art events in general, such as oriental dance). She attended the openning of Opera Season at San Francisco every year (usually with Blanche, and she will grab Lew when she can catch him). In 1940, she offered a prize for the "Best one act play" to stimulate interest in the Lobero Theater of Santa Barbara. She also went to see excellent plays in New York when it's in season and made some witty comments about the remarkable fashion trends in New York: "The only lavender and old lace that you see today is on the individual--the lavender in the tinted hair, and the lace on the dainty unmentionables."
After the Pearl Harbor Attack, Doris turned from a socialite to a civic leader. In 1942 she became the national vice-president of the American Women's Voluntary Services (AWVS) (and during ww2). The AWVS recruited and trained women to harvest crops, do nurse works, driving trucks and sell war bonds. She encouraged women to show more interest in international affairs. She also founded Guide Dogs for the Blind in 1943 (primarily to help the blinded veterans) and she made generous donations. In addition, she was the state commander of the California Cancer Society.
The AWVS duties kept her so busy, she has to relinquish her box at the opera house. She only had long enough time to have a toasted chicken sandwich for lunch. She put generous amount of English mustard on her sandwich. When her friends cautioned her not to put too much, she said:"If it puts me out, I will be a most excellent subject for the first aid class I am about to attend, and we will all find out how much we know!"
In the summer of 1945, Doris and Stanhope finally divorced (Stanhope even filed counter-suits seeking divorce on the grounds of desertion). They divorced in August, and Stanhope married "the Blond" in September 1945.
In June 1948, Doris died at home (944 Chestnut Str San Francisco CA). She had a stroke (and she always had hypertention). It seems her death was an unexpected sudden death because one month before she was still traveling around France with her daughter Blanche. Her will dictated to split her legacy equally between Blanche and Lew. She also left generous amount of money to employees such as housekeeper, secretary. For a former maid, she gave her $225 monthly for life.

A rock of gold.
0.0008%.
That’s (approximately) the percentage of humans who live in Bermuda.
That’s not even the percentage of humans who are Bermudian, and could potentially represent the island.
That percentage would be even smaller.
Smaller than 0.0008%.
That percentage of the world’s population has now won an Olympic gold medal.
Sports, particularly professional sports, tend to be a great equalizer. It’s often relatively easy to stand out and shine bright among small pools of talent. Take that talent out of that small pool, and things will start to even out.
Every NBA player, even ‘that guy’ who only plays 1 minute every 3 or 4 games for their NBA team, was a superstar growing up. He was the best player that his hometown ever had, the captain of his teams all through high school. Everyone knew him, and said “he’ll be the best in the world some day. He’s the best player we've ever seen.”
Think of all the best athletes at your high school. The best football player, the best swimmer, the best basketball player.
They’re not even remotely close to the level of ‘that guy’.
‘That guy’ plays 1 minute every 3 or 4 games in the NBA.
I myself have had dreams of playing golf professionally, even turning pro, and competing in a few minor professional tournaments around the world. At my peak, I would estimate I was easily in the top 2% of golfers in the world.
I was never even close to being good enough to make the PGA tour.
Flora Duffy meanwhile, is the best female triathlete in the world.
She was born and raised in Bermuda.
0.0008%.
As ‘underdog’ stories go, this is beyond that.
Bermuda is 24 miles long. That’s the length of just the biking portion of the triathlon. Our entire country is one leg of the race.
Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium can hold 76,000 spectators. As I’ve walked out of that stadium, I’ve looked around and thought, “My entire country is here…and then some”.
The odds are absolutely staggering.
Most islands, Bermuda obviously included, will tell you that everyone knows everyone. It’s an oft stated joke that (as with most jokes) there lies some truth within.
While I would argue not everyone knows everyone; everyone certainly knows someone to help them know everyone.
What I mean by that is there is usually only one degree of separation in Bermuda: if you don’t know someone, you almost certainly know someone who does.
A medal for Flora, unlike medals for many athletes from mostly all the other countries taking part in the Olympics, feels like it also belongs to us. We feel a part of it.
Flora went to the same schools as I did (she was a year above me), and my brother (who was a very good runner) used to race with her a lot.
I have my Phys. Ed. teachers on social media, who were Flora’s Phys. Ed. teachers growing up too. Imagine how they must feel.
Unlike a medal for a country like the U.S.A, or Great Britain, a medal for Bermuda means something to each and every Bermudian.
Don’t hear what I’m not saying. The medal is hers, and hers alone. The work that Flora has put in throughout the years, the dedication to her craft, and the obstacles she’s overcome, both internal and external, deserve nothing less than this being Flora’s medal.
And yet, it genuinely feels like Bermuda has won a medal too.
Unlike with other (larger) countries, we can feel connected to her success. Every Bermudian, every day, could drive past the school that she went to, and walk the roads she trained on.
We’re only 24 miles long. At any given moment, every Bermudian on the island was within a 24 mile radius of Flora. They might’ve passed her while they were in their car, or sat next to her at a restaurant.
For comparison's sake, someone from California probably has no clue where a medalist from Florida’s town is, let alone their school and street.
We’ve often heard celebrities comment on how much they love being in Bermuda because Bermudians don’t make a fuss over them. I think that comes from a culture that we are ingrained with of “we’re all so close together, anyone could be next to anyone at any given moment.” You could simply go collect takeout food and be behind the Premier of the island, or go to a cricket match and stand next to the Governor.
The proximity of everyone means that nobody is untouchable, invisible, or placed on an artificial pedestal. We are all involved in each other’s lives in some way, shape, or form.
Flora, when she returns home, will visit and hang out with her same friends from primary school. She will go get groceries at the same grocery store as half of the island. She will take a run in the morning and most of the island will drive by her as they head in to work.
She will simply be one of us; and yet she is so much more.
She has beaten the overwhelming odds.
She didn’t enter these Olympics as an underdog. This win didn’t come out of nowhere. She was a favourite to win.
She has been, for a number of years, arguably the best female triathlete in the world; a consistent, dominant, world class athlete.
She is an Olympic Gold medalist, and a hero in every sense of the word.
That an athlete of that caliber can come from 0.0008% is astonishing.
It’s not supposed to happen. Ever. In any field.
Given our size, Bermuda should have never won an Olympic medal or ever had anyone at the absolute top of their field in the world for any sustained amount of time. In anything.
The odds tell you, without any doubt at all, that you should not, in any way, expect to succeed; you should bet on something else.
I guess they've never met a Bermudian.
More specifically, Flora Duffy.
In that case, 0.0008% is plenty.
Congratulations Flora.

Boats, Best Friends, and Burgers
Shawn Mendes x Reader
A girl with walls up against boys meets a boy at a party who whisks her into his world. Maybe love isn’t a distraction after all.
Y/N never considered herself naive nor trusting. She prided herself on how she kept to herself and protected her heart, unlike her college roommate or her friends who would throw themselves at boys when they do much as smiled or grasped their hand. No, Y/N would not destroy herself like that.
She had college, a tiring feat that would absolutely be even more deteriorated with the addition of a boyfriend, and Y/N liked being by herself, it gave her a peace and quiet without obligations. Y/N did not need the distraction of a relationship at all.
But that damn boat party changed everything.
“Y/N!” Connor shouted through the kitchen, his voice laced with despiration and a hint of whining. “You can’t just rot away in your apartment forever!”
“Mmm, I can and will.” Y/N lashed back, taking another drink from her bottle of Gatorade. She and Connor had been friends since Pre-K, the boy seemingly insisting on filling some big brother role (ironic, since Y/N was two months older than him). “You know I don’t do parties.”
Connor scoffed, shaking his head. “It wouldn’t kill you to do one! I’m only back in LA for a week before tour starts again, I want to spend time with my best friend.”
“You can. With pizza. And a movie. On the couch. Not on some boat out on the bay with hormone-ridden girls and boys reeking of testosterone.” Y/N reasoned, Connor grasping Y/N’s arms.
“Please. Just this one party. We go for an hour, and if you want to leave we’ll leave.” He begged.
Y/N let out a flamboyant groan, pouting her lips. “Fine! Fine. One hour.”
Connor let out a whoop, throwing his fists in the air. Y/N shook her head, hoping she’d suddenly contract a case of tuberculosis or the bubonic plague, both of which, in her opinion, would be a far more pleasant ordeal than that party.
Hours later Connor dragged Y/N onto the boat, the loud music and squealing of drunken girls flooding her senses. She turned to Connor about to beg if they could leave, but he gave her a rather pointed look, silencing that suggestion.
Y/N was definitely not dressed for the occasion. Boys dressed in the ugliest Hawaiian shirts and swim trunks, girls in tiny skirts and booty shorts with crop tops or bikinis. Y/N merely wore a pair of bermuda shorts and a John Mayer concert shirt from the summer.
Y/N slowly pushed through the crowd with her extroverted best friend, Connor shouting out and walking over to some friends. Y/N looked around, the ideas of Jell-O shots and grinding circles quickly becoming rather unappealing to her.
She soon caught sight of paradise! Alas! A island amongst the turbulent throng of sexual desires and rising blood sugar. An empty corner, back at the end of the boat. Y/N made a beeline there, humming with satisfaction as she was separated from the rioting mess.
Y/N leaned her elbows on the railing and looked out at the pinkish sunset over the city, closing her eyes and inhaling the salty breeze.
“Oh, shit.”
Her eyes snapped open and Y/N turned, seeing a tall curly haired boy standing a few feet from her. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t see this corner was taken.”
Y/N nodded. “Yup. I’ve been here fifteen minutes and I’m pretty sure by the twenty mark I might start twerking or doing body shots off the lifeguard.”
The boy laughed, his fingers figeting nervously. “Not if I beat you to suddenly ripping my shirt off and seducing five girls at once.”
It was Y/N’s turn to laugh, her mind sending off sirens and screaming RUN AWAY! but she just couldn’t.
“I’d rather jump first.” She sighed.
“Oh God, me too. I’m so sick of these people.” He gasped out, leaning on the railing next to her. “One more girl pulls at my hair again and I’m going to have a mental breakdown buzz cut.”
Y/N smiled, holding out her hand. “Y/N.”
“Shawn.” He grinned, encasing Y/N’s hand in his giant one, shaking it firmly. “Nice to have someone who has a BAC of 0.0.”
“Maybe not. Perhaps they sweat it all off and it fumes. Maybe it’s like a second hand high, we’re just second hand drunk.” Y/N mused.
“Maybe.” Shawn agreed. “How’d you even get here? If you mind me asking, since you obviously don’t want to be here.”
Y/N let out a scoff of laughter. “My idiot best friend. He dragged me here out of guilt. He travels a lot, we don’t see each other much. You?”
“Friend as well. I’m traveling a lot too, said we needed to “wind down” I guess. Fucking Brashier...” Shawn muttered.
Y/N turned to Shawn, raising her eyebrows. “Brashier? Did you say Brashier?”
“Yeah. Why?” Shawn questioned.
“Oh my gosh...” Y/N laughed. “Connor dragged you here too.”
Shawn stared at her in confusion for a moment before bursting into laughter. “No way! You’re THE Y/N! Connor talks about you all the time!”
“Only good things I suppose.” Y/N responded.
Shawn shrugged, Y/N laughing and slapping him lightly on the arm. “That must make you Shawn Mendes, international pop superstar. Very impressive.”
He smiled, leaning back against the railing. “I guess I am. And you’re the Y/N who fell of a two story roof.”
“He did not—I gonna kill him!” Y/N gasped, the two laughing.
The night drifted on, the sky dark and glistening with stars as the two talked for hours. Y/N remembered clearly writing her number on his wrist before Connor took her home, herself wanting to slap the smug grin off the boy’s face.
Texts with Shawn became phone calls and FaceTimes, and soon dates. Y/N was tripping and falling so fucking deep for him. They stayed in contact during his European tour, him practically begging her to come with him on his North American tour. “You’re my anchor!” He exclaimed over the phone, Y/N blushing insanely. “You keep me grounded.”
So the playful shoves became the interlacing of hands, the smack talk over games of Mariokart became sweet pecks on cheeks. Y/N took a gap year off to follow him across the continent, because if he had breaken down the walls she spent so long building he was worth it.
The North American tour had wrapped up after many months, Y/N and Shawn enjoying lunch together before he had to leave for Asia. They devoured their burgers, laughing and talking while they basked in the time they had left.
Y/N had just finished her pickle-ketchup-cheddar burger when Shawn smiled up at her.
“Y/N L/N, I think I’m in love with you.”
Y/N looked up in surprise, Shawn leaning over the table with a smile. “Y/N, I know I am in love with you. And I need you to know it.”
She felt her heart race, a grin gracing her features. “Shawn Mendes, you somehow got me to love you too. No other man can boast as much.”
He smiled so bright grasping her hand as he leaned over the table, running his fingers through her hair as he connected his lips with hers.
Y/N deepened into the kiss, wanting nothing more but to melt into him and never end the sweet euphoria clouding her brain.
But, with the disdain of suffocation, they pulled away gasping for air. Y/N leaned her forehead against his.
Shawn laughed. “Boats, best friends, and burgers.”
“Best way into a girl’s heart.” Y/N whispered, grinning before grabbing either side of his face and crashing her lips against his again.

DAY 150: Kokomo by the Beach Boys
Album: Still Cruisin’ Release: August 28th, 1989 Genre: Rock
I feel the only way to appropriately begin today’s article is by mentioning that the Beach Boys’ careers are coming up on spanning seven decades. Since 1961, the Beach Boys have adopted a culture that resides with the crashing waves, the soft sands, and the beautiful people of surfing culture. It is in their name, after all. The Beach Boys were not the first to explore the surf rock genre, but they were certainly one of the first to perfect the art and set the standard for what was expected. Along with legends like the late king of surf rock Dick Dale, this glorification of California lifestyle and its beach-loving inhabitants took the nation by storm in sort of a pre-Beatlemania frenzy that hadn’t been seen before. This was the early 60′s after all, so it didn’t take much to really deviate from the norm. That’s actually a really good comparison to make: the Beach Boys certainly never developed the devout following of a band as iconic as the Beatles, but in terms of their target markets, the two are comparable for their dominance within the youth demographic. Those darn crazy kids and their surf boards and what not! Ultimately, what it boils down to is that early albums from the Beach Boys were all about fun in the sun and having a good time; who wouldn’t be interested in something like that? After a handful of albums to begin their career which include three surf centric albums, 2 hot rod albums, and a Christmas album, the Beach Boys started showing interest in moving away from the niche genre and expanding more into popular music. Beginning in 1965, the band set on a new course in their careers, turning to more sensitive subject matters like love and heartbreak that was more relatable to a core audience. This change would give us the beloved 1966 album Pet Sounds, which has since been regarded as one of the best albums of all time. Not bad for a change in style! As the years went on, the Beach Boys would never eclipse the success that Pet Sounds brought them, but remained steady in releasing their material and touring. The 70′s and 80′s proved to be a troubling time for the Beach Boys, marred by tensions from within the band about musical direction and the loss of one of their members Dennis Wilson. Nevertheless, the band pressed on, mostly writing songs that would be featured in films throughout the 80′s. One of which that was made for the 1988 movie Cocktail featuring Tom Cruise was Kokomo, a carefree Caribbean escape that was similar to songs in their early career. The tune would later appear on the compilation album Still Cruisin’ comprised of songs featured in different movies, and was critically panned for its unoriginality and recycled material. Despite the harsh words, Kokomo would become the Beach Boys’ first #1 single in nearly 20 years for its tropical melodies that employ the uses of the legendary harmonization the Beach Boys became known for. Kokomo is a fictional area off the Florida keys, among several other Caribbean islands that are included in the chorus...except for Bermuda. Bermuda is in the north Atlantic. Fun fact. While the Beach Boys are built upon a mountain of hits stemming from their surf roots, it seems only fitting that a reprise within this style would be a last hurrah for outstanding commercial success for the band. Hell, they’re still touring today with as many original members as they can. That’s a commitment to the craft!
