Be a Good Teammate pt. 2
Jessie Fleming x USWNT!Reader (also Seattle!Reader)
Read Part 1
Warnings: none, this is a pretty relaxed chapter
WC: 2.8k
A/N: thank you so much for the support on what is now Part 1. Due to how many people requested a continuation of this fic, I figured I’d go for it! This is more of a filler/plot mover part of the story. There will be at least one more part that will be a lot more interesting but if there’s enough interest and I have the ideas, maybe it’ll be many more parts.
It had been a couple weeks since you had talked with Jessie on the field in San Diego. You haven't heard anything from her, not that you were expecting to after she had told you she had a lot on her plate. Not hearing from her had bothered you a bit in the beginning, thoughts of her constantly popping up in your mind. She was a minor distraction. As time went on and you didn’t hear from her you went back to the way you had been before you had seen her. You were able to brush off the thoughts of her easily, getting back into your routine as if you hadn’t even seen her.
Something deep down hoped you’d wake up to a text from her. That hope diminished as the days passed. It wasn't until the week before your team was supposed to take the trip to Portland to play that you heard from her.
Unknown: Hey, this is well overdue but I just wanted to apologize, I was rude to you after the gold cup game. Not an excuse but I was in a pretty rough state. Thanks for what you said too.
Unknown: by the way this is Jessie, I had to get a new number to use in the US. Feel free to delete my UK number. Keep the Canada one, I still use that.
Unknown: I got your number from Coffey.
Unknown: Hope that’s okay. You can just delete this number if you’d rather.
Reading her texts made you smile and let out a small laugh, she texted exactly how she would talk. You can practically hear her voice while reading through the texts, how she probably sat there overthinking each text only to then feel guilty for not just double or triple but quadruple texting you. You clicked on her number, changing her name in your phone to Jessie (USA).
Your thumbs hovered over the keyboard as you thought about responding. Deciding against replying at the moment, you lock your phone again and climb out of bed. You throw on your clothes for training then head to your kitchen to make a quick breakfast and coffee.
Training was rough. It was less that the physical workout was hard, it had actually been a lighter day being only 2 days away from game day. It was rough because you couldn't focus.
Your mind kept drifting to the few texts you had received from Jessie. Had she been thinking about you all these weeks? Why did she wait so long? Maybe she was only thinking about you since you would be seeing her this weekend. But maybe she was thinking of you for other reasons. Maybe she was ready to start being friends? Maybe you could end up as more? All the thoughts related to her were swarming around your head, leading you to be in a fog at practice.
It was embarrassing to say the least, missing touches, overpowering or underpowering your passes, even tripping over your own feet a couple times. After you had fallen to your knees while doing individual dribbling drills, for the third time that day at practice Quinn stepped over to you extending their hand.
“Are you good?” Concern in their eyes as they pulled you up.
“Yeah, just in my own head today.” trying to give a convincing smile shaking your head at your own behavior. You had managed to push Jessie so far back in your mind for years, why was she messing with you now.
“Alright, if you need to talk let me know, or go see the psychologist. The team has them for a reason. We need you to stay on your feet Saturday.” They pat you on the back and go back to finish their dribbling drill.
“Thanks.” You gave Quinn a smile, knowing damn well you wouldn't bring yourself to talk with them. They were one of the best listeners on the team and had heard out your other issues, anxieties and just general venting. There was no way you were going to talk to Quinn about their own national team teammate. You didn’t need it coming back to Jessie that she was on your mind.
You were so thankful when you were called to huddle up and end practice. Heading back to the locker room you peeled your sweaty jersey off, throwing a sweatshirt on instead, grabbing your phone and heading to the trainer’s room. You greeted the staff, walking over to the ice bath and hopping in. The icy water causes goosebumps to appear across your skin. It felt good, you knew it would, you often would use a cold shower to clear your mind, but this counted as your recovery as well so it was a bonus. You stripped off your sweatshirt leaving you standing shivering in your sports bra. You took a deep breath and let your knees give, sinking your whole body under the water.
Under the water was peaceful, quiet, the freezing water causing your brain to go blank, no thoughts of the bad training, no thoughts of Jessie, no thoughts of what to make for dinner tonight, nothing. So you waited, sitting on the bottom of the tub prolonging your peace. Running out of air, you resurfaced to find a few teammates and members of the training staff to be looking at you. Feeling suddenly self conscious you grabbed your sweatshirt throwing it back on. “What?” you harshly asked in the general direction of your teammates. None of them responding, shaking their heads or just looking away.
Before you could make it out of the locker room you heard your name called and saw your coach standing behind you.
“Can you come to my office before you head out?” She asked.
“Yeah no problem, just give me a second to change my shorts, I’ll be right up.” You tried to appear calm on the outside. On the inside you were stressing. Why did she need to talk to you, maybe you were being traded and you'd be able to dodge Jessie longer. Maybe she was taking you off the travel roster, maybe she was going to yell at you for your performance today. You quickly changed into some dry pants and walked over and into the coaching office.
“Go ahead and shut the door.” She pointed behind you when you walked in. Her words make your stomach sink. You sat down, not saying anything, just looking at her across the desk. She finishes up something on the computer, hitting the power button and turning back to face you. She taps her hands on the desk and starts talking. “Look, I’m going to tread lightly here, are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m good.” Your best attempt at a smile comes across your face.
“You realize why I have to ask, right?” you just nod at her question. “I don't mean to be crass but that was the worst practice you've had since you started here. I get it, everyone has an off day, but that to me looked like a lot more than just an off day.”
“I’m good, I just had a bit on my mind.” She wasn't telling you anything you didn't know but hearing her criticism of your performance hurt, you didn't want to disappoint her.
“Do I need to take you off of our roster for this weekend's game?”
“No!” You're quick to protest her offer. “I promise, I’ll have it sorted by then.” Not sure if you're trying to convince yourself or your coach at this point you keep talking. “You can count on me.”
“I want to believe that, I do. I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt on this one, I’ll leave you on the roster, we really need you for this game, but I’d rather not put you out there if your performance is going to look like it did today.”
“Yes Coach, I understand. I’ll be good.”
She turns back to a stack of papers, grabbing off a small slip from the top. She hands it to you, you look at it recognizing the name and contact information of the team’s sports psychologist and the team’s standard psychologist. “Take this, I’m not saying you need to talk to anyone, but it's good information to always have.”
You look up from the paper, thinking it's silly how now two people had recommended that you needed professional help, all over the fact that you had a silly little crush on an old teammate.
“Thanks Coach, I’ll see you tomorrow.” You stood up pushing in the chair behind you, leaving her office. You walked down the hallway back toward the locker room to grab your bag. Before you head out you quickly pack your travel back, throwing in your boots, shin pads, extra socks, tape before dropping the bag at the front of the room where your teammates had placed theirs. You moved back
Part of you cursed Jessie for reaching out, you had been able to push your thoughts of her back in your mind after you had talked but now that she had reached out she was back in the forefront. Opening your phone as you walked out of the training facility, you opened your messages and clicked on Jessie’s name. You opened her contact, frustrated from your performance at practice and causing your coach to consider benching you, you wanted to blame it on her. You hover your finger over the delete button. You then moved your thumb to where it read Block This Number. Before you could think twice you pressed it, the messages from her disappearing, no trace of her new number on your phone. While you were at it you proceeded to delete her number from the UK. You left her Canadian number, she never used that one to talk to you, no harm in it staying. You were hoping blocking her new number would also block the thoughts of her.
You learned very quickly though the night that if anything, blocking her number made Jessie more prominent in your mind. She was in your mind while you drove home. You thought about her while you stood under the cold water of your shower, she was in your mind while you cooked. Trying to distract yourself you grabbed a book and the book worked. It kept Jessie out of your mind until you realized how much you liked the book, one of the best ones you had read in a while. You decided to open GoodReads, immediately closing it when the first thing you saw upon opening the app was Jessie’s name, she had recently rated a book. You had forgotten that you were even friends on the app, you hadn't read or rated a book in a long time. Deciding you’ve had enough, you pull yourself off the couch and into the bedroom to try and get some sleep.
Setting your alarm for the next morning, you climbed into bed, deciding to count sheep to prevent your mind from wandering. It took many minutes of tossing and turning before you were able to fall asleep. Despite the long day you had mentally and physically, sleep did not come easy. Unfortunately, once you were asleep, you didn’t stay asleep long, feeling restless when you woke up for the fourth time that night, the sky was still dark outside. You roll over checking the time 3:18am. Still half asleep you reach for your phone, sliding it open. Squinting at the bright light you find your settings, opening your list of blocked numbers, finding Jessie’s you click unblock. You open your messages, type in her name and then a message.
You: No problem, see you Saturday.
You're not sure what you're saying no problem to, if it's because she apologized, if it's because she thanked you for talking to her or if it's to the fact that she had asked Sam for your number. Sleep is still fogging your brain. You hit send, shut off your phone and roll over hoping you can get some more sleep before your alarm wakes you.
You wake up to the sound of your alarm. You gave yourself an extra hour in the morning to pack before you had to meet at the stadium to travel. You threw on your travel sweats and shirt before throwing an assortment of sweatpants, t-shirts, and shorts into a bag, not caring what you packed for the 3 day trip. Moving into the bathroom you packed your toiletries, before heading back to your bedroom to grab your phone and the charger.
Jessie (USA): See you Saturday.
You do a double take at the message, last remembering that you had blocked her number. You open it, seeing that you, in fact, had not blocked her but instead you had texted her at 3 in the morning. “Oh you idiot,” you insulted yourself. You threw your phone in your pocket while packing your charger in your bag.
It wasn't long until you were sitting on the bus, stretching your body across two seats, trying to get comfortable. The buses had to be one of the most uncomfortable parts of playing, unfortunately Portland was considered too close to justify a plane ride. You were reading over the itinerary that had been handed out. You were scheduled for a light practice this evening followed by designated stretching and recovery time, then it was dinner and lights out. Looking to Saturday you saw the early arrival time, the game starting at Noon, pitch walk just before that, and time to warm up. After the game you had recovery for an hour followed by the words “Free Time” It wasn't uncommon for you to get freetime after game days when you were traveling, it was nice to explore where you were playing or just getting to hang out, unregulated, with your teammates. Sunday consisted of a practice in the morning, then more free time, followed by the bus ride back in the evening. The large amount of free time on this trip caught your eye, giving you an idea as you dig your phone out from your pocket. You open it to Jessie’s messages again and start typing.
You: If you're up for it, dinner Saturday night?
You realize that feels a bit forward, adding a second message.
You: You can bring a teammate too if you want, it doesn't just have to be us.
Seconds after you send it you see the bubble indicating Jessie is typing pop up, you lock your phone and toss it as if it's on fire into the seat that your legs are resting on. You feel it vibrate against your calf, indicating she had responded. Instead of reaching for your phone you remain still, staring at it. It’s only once the phone vibrates again reminding you that you had a text that you reach and pick it up. Involuntarily you hold your breath and turn on the screen.
Jessie (USA): That would be nice.
The gray bubble appears again.
Jessie (USA): just us
You let the air out of your chest, feeling relieved at her response. She wanted to see you. She wanted to see you, just the two of you. A smile grows on your face as you read over her messages again and again.
You: sounds good, may need some recommendations on dinner locations
This time when you see her typing you hold onto your phone. Watching as the bubble appears for a few seconds before disappearing and reappearing
Jessie (USA): I’ll figure something out and let you know
You begin to type out “sounds like a date” before deciding that it’s a little too forward, against it, deleting it and changing it.
You: perfect!
You waited, seeing if she would respond, not that there was much to respond to but part of you hoped she’d say something else. When she doesn't you shut off your phone. You lean your head back so it rests against the window and you're looking at the ceiling of the bus. You let out a sigh of relief. It feels like a weight has been lifted off your chest for the first time in two days. You now knew she didn't completely hate you, you knew she was willing to let you talk with her again.
Feeling last night's lack of sleep catches up with you, your eyes close and you’re able to drift peacefully asleep, your brain no longer filled with anxieties or concerns about Jessie, you remain asleep until the bus stops and you hear your teammates gathering their belongings to get off the bus. You were finally in Portland.

To Love Someone
~To Love Someone by Benson Boone~
Author's Note: just pure fluff Summary: Alex and Y/N spend their first afternoon together in their new apartment in Montreal Warnings: meh like a sentence that implies smut Word Count: 1308 Alex Newhook x fm!reader
It was a long conversation that led to longer and even more conversations. Alex was traded to Montreal Canadiens over the summer from the Colorado Avalanche. It wasn’t a shock, Alex was given a heads up that he was most likely going to be traded. He had no idea where until he received the call. Y/N sat beside him as he spoke on the phone and found out he was heading back to Canada. In his mind it was probably the most perfect option.
It was a shorter plane ride to have his family come watch his games or to visit home during breaks. The team was young, he could fit in really well. He hated that he had to leave the team he won a Stanley Cup with. His best friend, who he won the cup with their rookie year. It was hard. One of the hardest things he’s ever done.
The next hardest thing was seeing if his long-term girlfriend wanted to move with him or go long distance.
They had been together for two years, it was the awkward time frame where either could’ve been the best option. Or ending the relationship to avoid future issues.
Y/N wanted to go with him. Of course she did. Except it terrified her. It meant that she was one hundred percent in the relationship. She was starting a life with him instead of just living their lives together.
Alex needed her to go with him. He needed one constant from his life. He wasn’t going to beg for her to come with him. He needed her to want to come with him. The conversations they had eventually led them to this moment.
Y/N was holding the keys to their new apartment. Their apartment together in the heart of Montreal. He carried a bag of take out food with a wide smile on his face. She slowly opened it and pushed the door wide. The apartment was filled with boxes the movers dropped off the day before.
“It looked smaller in the pictures,” she let out as she stepped inside admiring the modern interior. She never truly liked the modern aesthetic as she preferred the farmhouse style. In this moment it was everything she ever wanted with the only person she’s ever truly wanted.
There were huge windows overlooking the city of Montreal. It was later in the afternoon and the sun was starting to set, creating a hue of orange mixed in with the blue of the sky. There were clouds in the sky that looked like cotton candy. “Wow,” she mumbled as she placed the keys on the kitchen counter before she walked through the maze of their boxes towards the large windows.
Alex delicately placed the takeout on the counter beside the keys as he followed Y/N towards the windows. She stood still staring out of the window as Alex walked towards her and wrapped his arms around her waist. He looked towards the sky that was becoming more orange within the minutes of them standing inside their new home.
“You have no idea how happy I am you’re here,” he mumbled as he delicately pressed his lips against her shoulder. She smiled as she tilted her head back to meet his gaze.
“Are you nervous?” she asked him while she turned around, wrapping her arms around his neck. He tilted his head to the side, while shaking his head nonchalantly.
“Not my first time changing teams. Done the whole move across the country thing a few times now,” he explained while looking into her eyes. Her eyes squinted as she began running her fingers through the ends of his hair.
“You didn’t win the Stanley Cup with them,” she countered teasingly. He took a sharp breath while nodding.
“I’m going to miss the guys and Colorado. I loved every moment I had there but the Habs-” he paused while shaking his head. A small smile formed to his lips as his eyes began to light up.
“The Habs want me, Y/N. I mean you see the social media stuff I have to do tomorrow. They’re excited to have me,” he explained.
“And they should be. You’re an amazing person and a great player,” she said with a wide smile.
“And what else?” he asked, raising his eyebrows as he guided her hips backwards.
“You’re handsome,” she began and he hummed in response, “Funny, smart, and kind, and I’m done boosting your already high ego,” he slowly began biting his lip as he let out a chuckle. She rolled her eyes as she leaned towards him and kissed him softly.
She pulled away as she met his dark brown eyes. “Come on, our poutine is getting cold,” he said with a wide smile before he began to maneuver through the boxes towards the kitchen. Y/N let out a huff of air before dramatically rolling her eyes.
“I cannot believe you convinced me to get that,” she let out while scrunching her features together.
“Oh come on, Baby. You live in Quebec now, you have no choice but to love it,” he said while unpacking the takeout containers. She rolled her eyes as she leaned against the white granit countertop.
“I’ll try it but I won’t enjoy it,” she said as she opened up her own box staring at the fries completely covered in gravy and cheese curds.
Alex handed Y/N her own plastic fork before he instantly smashed his fork into the fries and brought it to his mouth. He took a large bite as a dramatic moan left his lips. Y/N laughed as she hesistantly took some of it on her own fork.
“Baby, just try it,” he said with a mouthful.
She ate it and surprisingly it was a lot better than she thought. She still would prefer cheese fries instead of having gravy. “Not horrible,” she mumbled as she reached for another bite.
“See I told you,” he mumbled. She smiled towards him before she took another bite. “I love you, you know that?” he let out.
“I love you more,” she mumbled. She swallowed her bite as she shook her head, “But Canada needs to get better food.”
His eyes widened dramatically as he fought off a smile forming to his lips. “Oh and American food is so great?” he teased.
“I never said that. America is really good at stealing other countries' food,” she explained. He shook his head as he chuckled.
~~~
It was a couple hours later and they were laying on the blow up mattress, her head laying on his chest. She ran her fingers up and down his chest as his hand loosely played with the hem of her tank top.
“This thing will go flat in like two hours,” she muttered as she lifted her gaze towards his features. His lips curled upward as he shifted his gaze downward to meet her eye. He pressed his lips against her forehead.
“Of course, the one thing they didn’t drop off was the mattress,” he muttered as she sat up slightly. She looked down towards him. Her hand landed on his cheek as she slowly ran her thumb across his cheek. Tracing the stubble on his skin. He took a hold of her hand and pressed his lips to her knuckles. “I love you,”
“I love you too,” she mumbled as she leaned down and kissed him delicately. “I’m happy I came with you. I don’t think I could handle you being so far away,” she explained as she continued running her thumb along his skin.
His hand climbed up her back, beneath her tank top. Her skin arose in goosebumps. “Roadies were already hard enough,” he mumbled before she leaned down and kissed him a little more urgently this time.
HELLO!! puckpocketed on main here to ask What do you mean with those tags… what politics got in the way of Cagnoni getting a team canada invite..? 👀
ALSKSKS it’s uh me being a little biased because i watch cags and the hawks so much! but hc tends to be very married to their guys; if you basically don’t break into the national lineup when you’re 16 it’s a lot harder to get in as you get older, even if your play merits at least a camp invite — which cagnoni’s definitely did. this year’s hc team specifically was very baffling to me because it could not be more clear that they could have used more good puck movers on the back end and cags deserved at least a look at camp and an opportunity to play his way on! hc leadership of late also tends to fill by role/position instead of just taking the best players available, and they decided they wanted size and a heavier, more defensive style for their blue line overall. which uh how’d that work out??
Every Record I Own - Day 813: Nomeansno Mama
I'm only home from tour for a few days before heading back out on the road, but I figured I'd try to squeeze one of these out before life gets hectic again. I just finished reading Nomeansno: From Obscurity to Oblivion, so I've been on a bit of a Nomeansno bender these last few days. So it feels like a good time to dive into discussing one of my favorite bands of all time.
Nomeansno originated in Victoria, British Columbia in 1979 as a two piece comprised of brothers Rob Wright (bass, vocals) and John Wright (drums, keyboards). After recording a couple of 7"s and gigging around Victoria and Vancouver, the brothers gathered up their resources and self-released 500 copies of their debut album Mama.
It's difficult to imagine what audiences thought of Nomeansno in those initial three years. The brothers had played music from an early age, giving them a musical adroitness more on par with prog bands than punks. But it was the tail end of the '70s and they'd been exposed to The Ramones, Devo, The Residents, and, perhaps most importantly, Vancouver's hardcore legends DOA. The power and DIY spirit of those artists spoke more to the brothers than the excess and panache of arena rock. But there's little on Mama that's reminiscent of punk and/or hardcore, even if the band would later come to be affiliated with those scenes. Maybe there's a little of Gang of Four's dance-punk leanings or Minutemen's jerking and skronking rhythm section and there's certainly some of Devo's spirit in their angularities and art-rock leanings. But if you're looking for distortion, three-chord anthems, and unmitigated rage, Mama is not for you.
According to the liner notes, the pressing plant who manufactured Mama went out of business and lost track of the masters, meaning that it wasn't possible to reprint more copies after those 500 initial copies sold out. Perhaps it was for the best---by the time the band returned with their next record, 1985's You Kill Me EP, they were a markedly different beast. The master tapes for Mama would be rediscovered nearly 30 years later, yielding this repress. Far from being some sort of classic in the band's canon, Mama became more of an interesting insight into how this pair of brothers from a small and sleepy town in Western Canada managed to morph into a pummeling, heady, sardonic, bass-driven force of nature that were one of the primary movers and shakers in the pre-Nevermind groundswell of the international underground.
This is where Nomeansno began, but it might not be the best entry point for the uninitiated.
"Stan does a remarkably subtle job of capturing Trump’s mannerism and facial tics . . . while keeping the character appropriately life-sized"
ScreenDaily
‘The Apprentice’: Cannes Review (click for article)
BY TIM GRIERSON, SENIOR US CRITIC 20 MAY 2024
Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong impress in Ali Abbasi’s otherwise lacklustre Donald Trump origin story
Dir: Ali Abbasi. Canada/Denmark/Ireland. 2024. 120mins
What turned Donald Trump into such a polarising figure? The question drives The Apprentice, which charts the rise of the real estate mogul in the 1970s and ‘80s, searching for the seeds of his callousness and megalomania without much success. One cannot fault Sebastian Stan, who plays the insecure entrepreneur during a pivotal period, or Jeremy Strong as Trump’s ruthless lawyer and mentor Roy Cohn. But, despite its welcome restraint, director Ali Abbasi’s English-language debut never has a decisive take on the man whose greed and ambition eventually took him all the way to the White House.
Abbasi’s fourth feature is his third in a row to screen in Cannes. (Border won the top prize in Un Certain Regard in 2018, while 2022’s Holy Spider earned Zar Amir Ebrahimi Best Actress.) Returning to Competition, Abbasi has delivered a suitably sour drama that is certainly timely — Trump will be mounting a campaign to regain the presidency this autumn — and the star power of Stan and Strong (supported by Oscar-nominee Maria Bakalova) will draw curiosity. But what is less clear is how much appetite there will be for a film devoted to a controversial man who will dominate headlines (especially in the US) over the next several months; the film has sold to several territories, with StudioCanal taking the UK/Ireland, but a US deal is yet to be done.
When we first meet Donald Trump (Stan) in the mid-1970s, he is an aspiring mover-and-shaker in New York’s real estate world and is introduced to feared, amoral attorney Roy Cohn (Strong). The blunt ballbreaker takes the admiring Trump under his wing, teaching him the secrets to being a winner. (In short: relentlessly attack your adversaries, always claim victory and never confess to anything.) With Cohn’s guidance, Trump quickly grows his business empire while claiming alluring socialite Ivana Zelnickova (Bakalova) as his bride.
Written by journalist Gabriel Sherman, The Apprentice gets its title from the NBC reality series that restored Trump’s lustre in the 21st century although, in the case of this film, Trump is the one learning the ropes. Initially, Trump and Cohn’s rapport — that of eager disciple and malevolent teacher — sparks what is, in essence, Trump’s supervillain origin story. Cinematographer Kasper Tuxen films in faded, gritty tones, capturing a seedy New York during an era of economic downturn which eventually led to the ‘80s boom.
Abbasi resists humanising his main character, although he and Stan avoid glib caricature. Stan does a remarkably subtle job of capturing Trump’s mannerism and facial tics — the pursed lips, the jerky hand gestures, the cocked head meant to convey toughness — while keeping the character appropriately life-sized. There are nods to how Trump’s unloving father Fred (played with muted chiliness by Martin Donovan) belittled him into becoming a lethal businessman, but The Apprentice argues that it was Cohn’s unapologetically unscrupulous behaviour that inspired Trump to lie, scam and bully his way to success. Not that the picture has any illusions that Trump was an innocent soul corrupted by external forces; he always had a killer instinct.
But despite the film’s appealing textures — production designer Aleksandra Marinkovich and costume designer Laura Montgomery do sharp period work — Abbasi struggles to find a compelling arc in Trump’s ascension. There is some grim fascination to watching an irredeemable egomaniac knock down every obstacle blocking his path. But Trump’s heedless quest never lends itself to deeper revelations about the mogul, nor does it suggest how he symbolises the dark side of so-called American exceptionalism. By striving for realism, The Apprentice ends up dramatically flat, the recitation of Trump’s most infamous incidents — including Ivana Trump’s charge her husband raped her (an accusation she later disavowed) — playing out perfunctorily.
As the ferocious Cohn, Strong is menacingly stripped-down, but once Cohn develops AIDS in the ‘80s he recedes from the narrative, robbing the film of one-half of its most dynamic power couple. (Sadly, Bakalova’s scrappy Ivana is quickly sidelined.) The Apprentice proposes that Cohn, who many considered equally as monstrous, eventually realised to his horror what he had wrought by unleashing his pupil on the world. But that tepid assertion is hard to buy — just a strained attempt at a dramatic crescendo in a film that presents us with The Donald, but fails to put its stamp on him.
Moving to the freezer 🍁
Hello from Canada, where the weather is just as bipolar as Katy Perry's Hot 'n Cold song. In the past 3 days I have already seen people with hats, gloves, skirts, shorts, warm winter boots and slippers. Upon arriving it was 5 degrees Celsius and raining. Weather prediction for Friday is highs op 28 degrees. A lot to get used to.
A small side note, I will continue to use the superior metric and centigrade system as the Canadians apparently can't decide on which measurement system they prefer to use. Road distances are measured in kilometers, a door height in feet and inches. All weight is measured in pounds, but driving speed in kilometers per hour. Very confusing.
Last week Monday the movers arrived and cleared the house. This was a bit worrying as we lived in a furnished house, and thus had to make sure they would not take what did not belong to us. We briefly considered telling them to clear the house out, and losing our deposit. After all, our deposit was probably a 10th of the nice furniture in the house and it would solve us a lot of hassle of buying new stuff. Luckily all went well and we believe everything that should've stayed remained. Who knows, maybe in 2 months we will unwrap some surprise gifts from the 23 cubic meters, or is it 812 cubic foot 🤔...
So once the house was raided we got to stay in a hotel we could pick from a list provided by Naomi's work. Obviously, if such an opportunity arises you select the one for the coolest experience. We ended up staying in Hotel des Indes. While Naomi still had to work, I finished up the last jobs in NL and roamed around the old center of The Hague to soak it in one last time. Arguably, the best attribute of our hotel was that it was so close to Laura's work, which allowed me to meet up with her for lunch on multiple occasions.
Then Saturday came, and it was time for departure. It was great seeing Laura, Kevin and Lars come to the airport and wave us off. After some chats and tears, it was finally time to leave. The repatriation came with business class tickets, which is a game changer for long distance travelling in my opinion. Lounge access prior to departure with lots of free food! A seat that allows you the completely recline and stretch out! Proper cutlery 😱😱😱! Never did I think an upgrade would make such a difference. But I remain with both feet on the ground. This experience probably got me my one and only KLM house. Next time back it's back to peasant class.
Upon arrival Naomi's parents picked us up and drove us around to get groceries. A big thank you to them for all their help and starter care packages. Today we have finally settled in to our 40m2 (431 sq ft) apartment where we will stay till our shipment arrives, hopefully within the next 8-10 weeks. Location is superb, right in down town. It's a 10 minute walk away from Naomi's work, and about 20 minutes to the library where I will mostly likely spend my time the coming months preparing for the PCE exam. The picture below is from one of our walks, and reminds me of the beautiful nature this country has to offer. Rockies in the distance!
Discography Tag
Rules: pick an artist or a band and share your favorite song from each of their albums, then tag some mutuals!
Okay, @onepintobean you asked for it!
YES, I AM DOING RUSH. Obviously.
me, whenever I’m about to do something like this that’s music related: Rush isn’t even my favorite anymore! It’s just the discography I’m most familiar with!
me, after doing something like this and listening to a bunch of Rush as a result: God, I love Rush so much. They’re the best. Unparalleled in all of history. A+ 👏
Rush (1974): Finding My Way. This one was hard, but only because I don’t like any of the songs much. I mean, no Neil? Come on!
Fly By Night (1975): Beneath, Between, Behind. Also hard, also because I’m not crazy about any of it. They had just hired Neil and just realized he’d be more willing to write lyrics than they were, and they just hadn’t found themselves yet.
Caress of Steel (1975): The Fountain of Lamneth. NOW they’re finding themselves! I love this song so much.
2112 (1976): 2112. Classic. I talk about it a little more when I talk about Vapor Trails.
A Farewell to Kings (1977): Cygnus X-1, Book I. I actually always forget which song the Cygnus X-1s are until I start listening to them, especially the first one. But as soon as I start playing them I’m like---Hell yeah.
Hemispheres (1978): Cygnus X-1, Book II---Hell yeah.
Permanent Waves (1980): Natural Science. I think it’s sort of interesting how their more conceptual songs (the extra long ones with several movements etc.) become VERY MUCH not the standard ‘70s prog rock concept song/album like as soon as they crossed into the ‘80s. This song is over 9 minutes long, but it’s nothing like the long ones which pervade the previous albums and tended to tell a literal story which is also a metaphor or exploration of something else (more like operas), whereas this is more of a journey through ideas and feelings (more like a traditional rock song)(although still overtly a metaphor). This is one of my favorite Rush songs, and, when pressed, usually the one I’ll say IS my favorite, though my favorite often changes, and is often whichever one I’m listening to at the moment.
Moving Pictures (1981): Vitals Signs. I’ve just always really loved this song. It’s essentially about change being basically the only thing that life CAN do, to stop changing is to stop living, which seems like one of those things where I’m usually like… well duh, but for some reason it’s very meaningful for me in this song. “A tired mind becomes a shapeshifter” has been one of those lyrics that has really stuck in my head since the very first time I heard it, although I’ve never been entirely sure why.
Signals (1982): The Weapon. I think maybe Neil Peart is just especially good at saying pretty obvious things in a way that really resonates with me.
Grace Under Pressure (1984): Distant Early Warning. When I’m singing songs to my kids I’m like, “can I sing this one?” and they’re like, “it’s not sad, is it?” and I say “it’s about the potential of nuclear war between the US and Russia, from the perspective of someone in Canada, which is right between the two countries…” and they say “okay, that’s fine.” And I’m like… who am I raising?
Power Windows (1985): Grand Designs. Good shit. “Against the run of the mill, static as it seems, we break the surface tension with our wild, kinetic dreams.”
Hold Your Fire (1987): Prime Mover. This album is the first one since Caress of Steel with songs that I actively do not like. I do love this song though.
Presto (1989): Chain Lightning. Okay, sometimes I say this is my favorite Rush song.
Roll the Bones (1991): Bravado. This was pretty hard for me. This album came out the same year I was born, and Roll the Bones was a CD I remember seeing around the house for my entire childhood, and it was the extent of my Rush exposure up until my dad made his torrented Rush road trip mix CD that sent me down the Rush rabbit hole from which I never escaped. So, anyway, even the songs that I’m like… I don’t know if this song is good… I’m still like, it’s my jam, though! I can only speak to it as a person thoroughly brainwashed to love the album, but the whole thing is thoroughly listenable to me.
Counterparts (1993): Leave That Thing Alone. Oddly enough, this album is like the anti-Roll the Bones for me, even though it directly follows it. It was the last of the Rush studio albums I bought (besides the ones that hadn’t come out yet), and I just didn’t really like it. I think there’s a level of cringe/’that didn’t age… great’-ness (and not the nerdy type of cringe, because, arguably there’s a decent amount of cringe in all of Rush), that starts to show up in Hold Your Fire and goes through to Test for Echo, but it really peaks for me in this one. Not that it aged badly, it just is different enough to how we think about things now that it’s kinda like… eh. And I’m 100% talking about the lyrics, I actually really like most of the music (though it sounds... weirdly mixed? to me? or something?). Leave That Thing Alone is the instrumental song on the album and it FUCKING SLAPS! (Counterparts is, btw, often a fan favorite, but Rush fans are often white, cis-het, gen-x men, so…)
Test for Echo (1996): Limbo. Also an instrumental track, although this album is infinitely more listenable to me than Counterparts is. The cringe is all goofier, which I think helps.
Vapor Trails (2002): Secret Touch. This was the most recent album that had come out when I was 13 and discovering Rush, and it’s usually the album that I’ll say is my favorite, when pressed. This one was by far the hardest to choose a favorite from. I changed it several times. My dad’s mixed tape of mostly ‘80s/’90s Rush was what piqued my interest, but when I followed up listening to the first song on 2112 (2112, which is over 20 min long, btw) with listening to One Little Victory from Vapor Trails (even just the first like… three seconds of the song), I was absolutely hooked! I bought 2112 and Vapor Trails because they were the only Rush albums at Best Buy that weren’t compilations, and---boy! Am I glad that was the case! This crazy, weird, almost orchestral, but only three people playing, amazing, ‘70s sci-fi journey that was 2112, then this intense drum solo and heavy rock song, which both sounded so different from each other, but even more different from everything my dad had played of Rush, which would have been created between those two albums. I was absolutely obsessed.
Snakes & Arrows (2007): Hope. This one’s one of the three instrumental songs (which are all amazing), but this time not because I don’t like the lyrics of the rest of the album, just because it’s great. It’s actually just Alex playing the guitar, which is very strange for them, but it’s beautiful. Snake’s and Arrows was my first real ‘A band I love and have made a part of my identity is coming out with a new album!’ experience, and it was so much fun. I had two teachers at the time, who were also fans, to bond over it with, and my dad was also super psyched. Rush was the first concert I ever went to (R40 in 2004), and I went to two more on the Snakes and Arrows tour, and two more on the tour after that (Time Machine, 2010-2011). Besides that I’ve only ever been to one Panic! At the Disco concert for my sister’s Birthday (2008?), which was really more like just a really bad party… like all of the worst parts of a school dance and a house party (it was at a weirdly small “ballroom”), and the band wasn’t even playing well---it sucked. and a U2 concert (2018). That concert was actually so good, though. People can say whatever they want about U2, but that was a fucking amazing show. (10/10, would recommend, would go again at any and all opportunities.) (But there will never be another Rush OR U2 concert with all of the members there again, because ALL OF MY DRUMMERS ARE BREAKING!) (Larry’s not dead, he just has drummer related health issues.) (I was all alone contracting in Maine when Neil Peart died. Like, I didn’t have anyone I knew to talk to in person about anything, let alone this thing that was very sad for me, but was a relatively niche interest.)
Clockwork Angels (2012) BU2B. The music started slipping for me a tiny bit with Snakes and Arrows, or maybe… the music and vocals together? I think mostly the music… But it’s even more extreme in this album. I think it’s just like A LOT for me. And I’m a Rush fan, so… The book that was written based on this story was fun, and I respect what they were trying to do with the album, but I almost never just go and listen to this album or any of the songs. Except sometimes BU2B, I actually do think that’s a pretty good song---I think the name just bothers me.
I have no idea who would bother to read all that, but it was fun to do! I made a playlist of these songs, and a playlist of my least favorite song from each album, and it was really interesting.
My cat died yesterday morning, and I had to just keep going; I had to go to work, do all the normal stuff, but I was really sad. She’s been around for way more of my life than not, especially the parts of my life I can remember, and she lived twice as long as her breed’s expectancy. Which is a cold comfort, considering how much more of me she carried with her because of all that extra time. She was there when I started high school, there for every break up I’ve ever had, my parents divorce, that time my husband and I lived in a three bedroom house with nine other people, a couple other cats, and a dog. When I joined the Navy, when my kids were born... And she was so very her up to the very end.
Anyway, this was a welcome distraction as I kept trying not to openly weep (and give myself a migraine) (which I did) all night at work.
I haven’t actually checked Tumblr, so I don’t know who else has done this:
Exploring Different Moving Services in Montreal for a Smooth and Stress-Free Relocation
Moving can be an exciting yet overwhelming process, especially when you have so many things to consider. Whether you're relocating within the city, across the country, or just need assistance with specialized items, finding the right moving services is essential for a smooth and hassle-free move. In Montreal, a wide range of different moving services are available to suit various needs, from basic transportation to full-service moves. Let’s explore your options so you can make an informed decision when it’s time to book your move.
Why Hiring a Professional Moving Company Makes Sense
The process of moving involves many tasks, including packing, lifting heavy furniture, organizing, and ensuring the safe transportation of your belongings. Hiring a professional moving company allows you to avoid the stress of doing it all on your own. Whether you’re moving a few blocks away or to a new city, a professional mover will handle all the heavy lifting, saving you time, effort, and potential injury.
In Montreal, different moving services are designed to cater to diverse needs, ensuring that you can find a solution that works best for you. A reputable company offers both standard and specialized services, such as moving fragile items, large furniture, or even providing packing and unpacking assistance.
Types of Different Moving Services in Montreal
When you’re planning your move, understanding the different types of services offered can help you decide what fits your needs and budget. Below are the most common moving services available in Montreal.
1. Local Moving Services
For those who are moving within Montreal, local moving services are a popular choice. This service involves the transport of household items, furniture, and personal belongings within a specific geographical area. Local movers are familiar with Montreal’s roads, neighborhoods, and traffic patterns, making them the best choice for a hassle-free move within the city.
Déménagement Alex offers a seamless experience for those needing local moves in Montreal. Whether you’re moving from one apartment to another or relocating a small office, local movers can ensure the entire process goes smoothly and efficiently.
2. Long-Distance Moving Services
If you're planning a move that takes you out of Montreal, long-distance moving services will be your go-to option. These services typically involve moving items over longer distances, whether it’s within Quebec, to another province, or even across Canada. A long-distance move requires additional planning and coordination, as it involves more logistics, potentially including multiple stops, longer travel times, and larger moving trucks.
Déménagement Alex provides long-distance moving services with a focus on safe and timely delivery. Their professional team will guide you through the process, ensuring your items arrive safely and on time at your new destination.
3. Packing and Unpacking Services
Packing and unpacking are among the most time-consuming tasks during a move. Fortunately, many moving companies, including Déménagement Alex, offer professional packing and unpacking services to make your move even easier. Professional movers come with all the necessary packing materials, such as boxes, bubble wrap, and tape, to ensure your items are securely packed and ready for transport.
With these services, you can sit back and relax while the experts handle everything. Packing services are especially helpful for fragile items, antiques, or valuables that require special care.
4. Specialty Moving Services
Moving specialty items like pianos, pool tables, or valuable artwork requires extra care and attention. These items are often heavy, fragile, or uniquely shaped, making them difficult to move without the right equipment and expertise. Déménagement Alex offers specialty moving services to ensure that your high-value or delicate items are transported safely to their new location.
Whether you have a grand piano, fine art collection, or oversized furniture, highly trained movers with the proper tools and experience can help you move these items with ease.
5. Commercial Moving Services
Businesses in Montreal often require professional moving services when relocating offices, warehouses, or stores. Commercial moves tend to be more complex than residential ones because they may involve moving office furniture, electronics, and inventory. Déménagement Alex offers tailored commercial moving services to ensure your business can continue operating without interruption during the move.
Their professional movers can assist with office relocations, including the packing and transportation of office furniture, electronics, and important documents. The goal is to minimize downtime and get your business up and running in the new location as quickly as possible.
6. Storage Solutions
Sometimes, a move doesn’t happen all at once, and you may need to store some of your items temporarily. Moving companies often offer storage solutions, providing you with a secure, climate-controlled space to store your belongings until you’re ready for them. Déménagement Alex offers short-term and long-term storage options, ensuring that your items are safe and secure during your transition.
How to Choose the Right Moving Service for Your Needs
Choosing the right moving service in Montreal depends on several factors, such as the size of your move, the distance, your budget, and the type of items you’re transporting. Here’s how you can select the best service for your needs:
Assess Your Move: Are you moving locally or long-distance? Do you need help packing? Do you have fragile or specialty items that need extra care? Answering these questions will help you determine the type of services you need.
Get a Quote: Request a detailed moving quote from a professional moving company like Déménagement Alex. Be sure to ask about any hidden fees or extra costs.
Consider Your Budget: Professional moving services are an investment, but they can save you time and reduce stress. Make sure to choose a company that fits your budget without compromising on quality.
Look for Reviews and Recommendations: Check online reviews, and ask for recommendations from family and friends to ensure you’re choosing a reliable and reputable moving company.
