17 delicious foods you can thank immigrants for.
<br>
Immigrants are in the spotlight lately. And not in the good, Patti LuPone/Audra McDonald duet kind of way.
LuPone (left) and McDonald (right). Photo by Drama League/Flickr.
As promised, the Trump administration is advancing its plans to boot millions of immigrants from the United States — and reviving its order to stop them from coming here in the first place.
To hear all your Sean Spicers, your Stephen Millers, and your Kellyanne Conways tell it, the measures are necessary to stop, well, pretty much everything bad currently happening in America — from job-stealing to crime to terrorism.
Convincing Americans that immigrants are more than the sum of their worst stereotypes means winning back some hearts and minds, but these days, it can feel futile to appeal to America's heart or its brain.
But perhaps — perhaps America's stomach is still willing to listen.
Immigrants don't only make America great; they make it delicious. The people who risk their livelihoods and occasionally their lives to come here are often more than happy to share their secret recipes with us. Without them, we'd have nothing to eat ... nothing good, anyway.
Here are 17 of the top contributions to America's culinary scene by refugees, ex-pats, and immigrants.
Try not to drool on the keypad.
1. You wouldn't know about pretty much all the Chinese food you like if it weren't for refugee-turned-immigrant-turned-master chef Cecilia Chiang.
Chang and kung pao chicken. Photos by John Parra/Getty Images and Sodanie Chea/Flickr.
Chiang, who survived the Japanese invasion of China before immigrating to San Francisco in the 1960s, introduced America to the delicious, umami, stir-fried meat pile known as kung pao chicken at her restaurant, the Mandarin.
2. This giant paella wouldn't exist if chef Michael Mina hadn't moved here from Egypt.
Today was one for the books. #MinaMoments
A post shared by Michael Mina (@chefmichaelmina) on Sep 24, 2016 at 6:26pm PDT
Mina, the guy with the oar, was born in Cairo, immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Washington state, proceeded to open over a dozen restaurants in cities across the country, win a Michelin star, write a cookbook, appear on Gordon Ramsey's "Hell's Kitchen," launch a media company, and, in this photo, somehow managed to combine rice, shellfish, and nautical equipment into something so appetizing you would probably win a free T-shirt for finishing it.
3. Without lax 19th century immigration laws, America would have been denied its birthright: the Bud Light Straw-ber-Rita.
Anyone who watched this year's Super Bowl just for the commercials knows that Adolphus Busch was a hardscrabble German immigrant who trudged through miles of mud and ominously high grass to found the all-American beer company that makes the U.S. the perennial world leader in drunken high school reunion softball games.
4. You'd have to travel to an Eastern European war zone to enjoy these perogis.
In 1954, Ukrainian refugees Wolodymyr and Olha Darmochawal came to New York City and founded Veselka in the East Village, serving these soul-altering fried meat, cheese, and potato pouches by the crock-load to NYU students who have crushed one too many Bud Light Lime Straw-ber-Ritas.
5. This ridiculous pulled turkey burger with Indian spices, candied bacon, and masala fries wouldn't be available in Elvis country.
Maneet Chauhan and the turkey burger. Photos by Theo Wargo/Getty Images and Chauhan Ale and Masala House/Facebook.
One great thing about being alive in 2017 is that you can find South Asian-Southern fusion sandwiches for less than $20 in the middle of the Bible Belt like it's no big deal thanks to immigrants like Indian-American chef Maneet Chauhan (you might know her as a frequent judge on "Chopped"), who opened Chauhan Ale and Masala House in Nashville in 2014.
6. We wouldn't know the gastronomic perfection that is surf and turf served over two cheese enchiladas.
Richard Sandoval and surf and turf. Photos by Neilson Barnard/Getty Images and La Hacienda/Facebook.
Before Richard Sandoval was a "Top Chef Masters" contestant, Bon Apetit Restaurateur-of-the-Year Award winner, and international food star, he was just a Mexico City kid with a dream. That dream? To put fried onions on top of steak on top of enchiladas with some lobster tail and risotto getting freaky on the side, as his La Hacienda in Scottsdale, Arizona, did on Valentine's Day 2017.
7. Anything with Huy Fong sriracha in it would have to be seasoned with a far lesser hot sauce.
Thanks to erstwhile humane values of decades past, America's hottest condiment was given unto us by a refugee — David Tran — who fled his native Vietnam on the ship Huy Fong in the 1970s. Had he come four-and-a-half decades later, it's likely he would have wound up in Canada and invented spicy maple syrup or whatever. (Actually, to be honest, that sounds pretty great. Please, immigrants from tropical climes living in Canada, invent spicy maple syrup.)
8. The Swedes might have chef Marcus Samuelsson's La Isla Bonita all to themselves.
Samuelsson and La Isla Bonita. Photos by Gustavo Caballero/Getty Images and Red Rooster Harlem/Facebook.
With all the problems in Sweden that are totally so real that everyone knows about them, it's no wonder that Samuelsson (who was born in Ethiopia and is another frequent "Chopped" judge) skipped town for New York City, bringing his brand of soul food to Harlem's Red Rooster — including this otherworldy mashup of tres leches cake, rum, passion fruit, and banana.
9. Detroit would be bereft without its iconic chili-onion-mustard dogs.
The precise origin of the Michigan-favorite Coney dog has been debated for decades, but pretty much no one contests that it was invented by Greek immigrants, notably brothers Bill and Gust Keros around 1919, when they discovered — after millennia of flailing by the best chefs in the world — that the ideal condiment for meat was goopier meat.
10. You wouldn't even be able to dream about Jose Andres' ibérico bacon cristal bread uni.
Jose Andres (L) and tapas (R). Photo by Larry French/Getty Images; Jaleo/Facebook.
It's also known as coca con arizos de mar — or "expensive ham 'n fish pizza" — and Andres serves this magical creation at his D.C. tapas restaurant Jaleo. The award-winning chef, who hails from Spain, was one of several dozen who closed his restaurants on Feb. 16, 2017, in protest of the Trump administration's immigration policies.
11. Vending machines, bodegas, and gas station convenience stores nationwide would be thousands of dollars poorer without Flamin' Hot Cheetos on the shelves.
More than "The Great Gatsby," more than "Rudy," even more than Katy Perry's "Roar," the story of Flamin' Hot Cheetos is the story of the American dream. Working full time as a janitor at a Cheetos factory (!), Mexican immigrant Richard Montañez took home some defective, un-dusted Cheetos after an equipment breakdown, sprinkled some chili spices on them, and presented his creation to corporate bigwigs, who promptly put them into production. The tangy corn tubelettes quickly became the company's #1 selling snack, and Montañez was promoted to executive vice present of multicultural sales and community activation, having successfully pulled himself up by his sticky-dusty bootsraps.
12. Cronuts would not be a thing.
Dominique Ansel and a cronut. Photos by Noam Galai/Getty Images and Chun Yip So/Flickr.
Assuming you could get a cronut, you would be first-born-child-level indebted to Dominique Ansel, the French-born chef who debuted the monstrously scrumptious croissant-donut hybrid in New York City in 2013. Unfortunately, four years later, you still can't get a cronut.
13. Your airport layover would be 1,000% less tolerable without this margherita pizza from Wolfgang Puck Express.
Puck and pizza. Photos by Michael Kovac/Getty Images and Jeff Christiansen/Flickr.
Stuck in Downtown Disney World or delayed getting back to Milwaukee? You could do a lot worse than this gorgeous bubbly cheese pie by Puck, Austria's greatest gift to America since the toaster strudel.
14. You'd have to eat this mouthwatering soft-serve in a cup instead of a cone.
If there's one thing certain cable news outlets will never fail to remind you, it's that Syrian immigrants are very, very, super-duper scary. Perhaps nothing in history illustrates this better than their most terrifying invention to date, the ice cream cone. The edible frozen treat vessel was created by Abe Doumar, who debuted his creation at the St. Louis Exposition in 1904, the culmination of the Middle Eastern migrant's dastardly plot to improve mankind and delight children of all ages around the world forever and always.
It's not just that immigrants invent food we like to eat. They pretty much cook everything we eat too.
Roughly 20% of restaurant cooks are undocumented, and an even greater share are foreign-born — up to 75% in some cities. That means that immigrants are responsible for feeding you even the down-home comfort food you enjoy, including...
15. This cheeseburger from Hardee's...
16. ...this stock photo apple pie....
17. ...and this American flag sheet cake.
Immigrants deserve a place in America. And not just because they fill our tummies with tasty victuals.
They enrich our communities and keep our culture varied and interesting. They do the jobs most of us don't want to do. They pay hundreds of billions of dollars in taxes and contribute to our economy in countless measurable and immeasurable ways.
Immigrants and refugees don't come here to get Americans fired, steal our wallets, or blow us up. Most of them come here for a better, safer, more secure life.
They make all of our lives richer — and more delicious — in the process.

Varying economic forces, including the early fur trade, the cross-Canada railway, the 1897/1898 Klondike Gold Rush, the Alaska Highway, and oil and gas extraction have had a swinging influence over the city.
With that economic prosperity, Edmonton has invested in art and culture by building great theaters and museums. The city's greatest claim to fame, however, is the West Edmonton Mall, which is one of the largest leisure and shopping centers in the world. Even during the long, cold winters, when temperatures average -15 degrees Celsius, shoppers are still enticed to linger. To learn more about the best things to do in this exciting city, read our list of top travel destinations in Edmonton.

1. Royal Alberta Museum
The Royal Alberta Museum moved to its new location in 2018 and is now western Canada's largest museum. Home to a fascinating mix of permanent cultural and natural history exhibits, as well as always-changing temporary installations, a visit to this ultra-modern facility is certainly time well spent.
Particularly impressive are the many fossils from the dinosaur and ice age eras, a large aquarium of native fish, and live insects-including some exotic and enormous species.
New additions include a large feature gallery hosting traveling exhibits from across Canada and around the world, a huge new kids' gallery, and a bigger bug room with live invertebrates and a visible nursery.
The museum's cultural history departments explore aboriginal cultures with artifacts from Blackfoot, Cree, and other First Nations. A well-stocked gift shop and a café are also located on-site.
Address: 9810 103a Ave NW, Edmonton, Alberta
Official site: https://ift.tt/ObM8wY
2. Elk Island National Park & Beaver Hills
This national park is just a 30-minute drive from Edmonton and covers a wooded area with lakes and wetlands, and is home to all kinds of wildlife, including moose, elk, deer, and beaver. But the main attraction of Elk Island National Park is the large herd of buffalo (bison), which graze over a special enclosure.
Anyone who drives slowly along the path through the park cannot see one of these big, shaggy beasts. Fun things to do here in the summer include hiking and biking, kayaking and canoeing, as well as camping, while winter activities include snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
The Beaver Hills area has now been designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and includes a dark sky preserve, a bird sanctuary, and a wilderness center. Originally a tribal home of the Indians Sarcee, however, Cree himself hunted beavers and buffaloes for pelvic bone, which was later traded with major fur-trading companies.
With hunting and settlement, the buffalo was almost wiped out, though some Beaver Hills buffalos were thought to have been captured in 1909 and placed in a sanctuary of their own. This is the ancestor of the animals that currently live in Elk Island National Park.
Address: 54401 Range Road 203, Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta
Official site: https://ift.tt/2skBEUS
3. West Edmonton Mall
Canada's West Edmonton Mall is not only the country's largest shopping center and one of the largest in the world it's also a major tourist attraction. In addition to hundreds of shops and restaurants, the facility also has a hotel, cinema, skating rink, aquarium, and more.
Adding to the appeal are the shopping mall's themed sections, designed to simulate the feel of popular travel destinations around the world.
For example, at Europa Avenue, many of the stores have European-style facades and bear the names of international fashion designers, while Bourbon Street, a replica of the famous New Orleans street, is the spot. Come to Creole cuisine and live music.
The mall's Galaxyland is one of the largest covered, indoor amusement parks in the world, boasting a variety of family-friendly rides, including a triple-loop roller coaster. Also fun is the recently renovated World Waterpark, the largest such attraction in North America.
Highlights include the world's biggest indoor wave pool, and two 83-foot-tall (and very steep) water slides. The park, in fact, has a variety of slides, ranging from beginner to extreme.
Address: 8882 - 170 Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta
Official site: www.wem.ca
4. Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village
Established in the 1970s along the Yellowhead Highway, this open-air museum preserves the cultural heritage of the many immigrants from Bukovina and Ukraine who settled in what is now Alberta in the 1890s.
Known locally simply as "the Village," various historic buildings have been reconstructed on the site, and the pale onion dome of a Ukrainian church is visible from afar.
There are many living history elements to explore, including blacksmiths, markets and an old-fashioned general store. Part of the fun is the opportunity to interact with the costumed guides, here to explain what life was like for these early settlers.
If possible, try to time your visit with one of the many events or workshops hosted throughout the year, from cooking demonstrations to harvest celebrations and commemoration of Ukraine's national day.
Address: Hwy 16 E, Tofield, Alberta
Official site: https://ift.tt/37EcaGQ
5. Fort Edmonton Park
Another open-air museum that should be included in your Edmonton travel itinerary, Fort Edmonton Park has old buildings faithfully reconstructed to reflect Edmonton's historical development.
The buildings include a typical 1846 fortress belonging to Hudson Bay Company, a street from the pioneering town in 1885, and a provincial capital emerging in 1905, as well as buildings from the 1920s.
Among the different forms of old transport, visitors can take a horse-drawn carriage or steamboat. At the nearby John Janzen Nature Center, there are exhibits about local geology and ecology.
Address: 7000 143 Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta
Official site: https://ift.tt/QKqoYh
6. Muttart Conservatory
On the south bank of the North Saskatchewan River, four pyramid-shaped hothouses are home to rare and far-traveled species of plants. Each pyramid features a distinct environment representing different biomes of the world, from the tropical climate of Burma and Fiji to the temperate pavilion with its American redwoods and Australian eucalyptus.
With many plants on display, the conservatory is the premier gardening establishment in Edmonton.
From the high ground above the river, there is a beautiful view of the gleaming pyramids of the Muttart Conservatory against the skyline of Edmonton city center. (Note: This important Edmonton attraction will be closed for renovations until the beginning of 2021.)
Address: 9626 96A Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta
7. Alberta Legislature Building
In the middle of a park-like garden, where the last Fort Fort stood, was the Legislative Building in 1913. It was a majestic and fascinating building, and from the terrace, there were beautiful views over the river.
North Saskatchewan to the far shore. Guided tours are the best way to learn about the history of what the locals refer to fondly as "the Ledge," including its architecture and secrets of the building. A highlight of a visit is spending time wandering the park-like grounds surrounding the building.
Be sure to also visit the nearby Legislative Assembly Visitor Centre, which includes important displays related to local art, culture, and history. There's also a cool 4D immersive experience that provides an impressive visual history of the province and its people, as well as a great gift shop selling arts and crafts from across Alberta.
Address: 10800 97 Ave NW, Edmonton, Alberta
Official site: https://ift.tt/2f1a1fu
8. Art Gallery of Alberta
A twisted modern building on Sir Winston Churchill Square, Alberta Art Gallery in Edmonton is dedicated to visual arts with an emphasis on Western Canada. The gallery has exhibits of change and travel and maintains an extensive collection of over 6,000 works.
The site also has a gift shop, restaurant and theater space. Private guided tours are available and can be tailored to suit your particular interests. The facility also offers a variety of educational programs for all ages, as well as lectures and workshops.
Address: 2 Sir Winston Churchill Square, Edmonton, Alberta
Official site: www.youraga.ca
9. Reynolds-Alberta Museum, Wetaskiwin
An hour's drive south of downtown Edmonton is the friendly, small town of Wetaskiwin. Here, the main attraction is the Reynolds-Alberta Museum, dedicated to everything to do with aircraft and vehicle construction.
There are open-air displays of old agricultural machinery and tools, including some real old dinosaurs-steam tractors, threshing machines, caterpillar tractors, and trucks.
There are also nearly 100 historic aircraft placed here, as well as in the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame and lots of classic motorcycles to admire. A café, store, and theater are also located on-site, with a good time to visit is one of the regular summer events when a variety of machines and vehicles are operating.
Address: 6426 40 Avenue, Wetaskiwin, Alberta
Official site: https://ift.tt/2r2ZWVb
10. K Days
The greatest event in Edmonton's calendar is the 10-day festival known as K Days (formerly called Capital Ex) held every year at the end of July when the wild days of the 1890 Klondike Gold Rush come to life once more.
Street-parties, dancing, parades, live entertainment, gold panning, and a midway liven up the whole city. Travelers planning to go to Edmonton during the festival should be sure to book a good accommodation first.

The Most Selfie-Worthy Bathrooms Across Canada
The restaurant restroom selfie is a social media staple. A decade ago, pulling out your camera in a public bathroom stall would garner curious looks. Now, a background toilet and some colourful wallpaper sends the Instagram likes rolling in! In the age of aesthetic-seeking millennials, restaurant design—from the front door to the loo—is increasingly important. We do our business… then we get to business. And sometimes, we even invite our friends to join us!
Whether it’s a disco light or glow in the dark graffiti, restaurateurs are smart to add a little something special to keep selfie-seekers coming back for more. From all across Canada, here are eight of our favourites.

Locals Only
589 King St W, Toronto
The wallpaper of this downtown snack bar bathroom is on constant rotation, keeping Toronto’s keenest selfiers coming back for more. Past backgrounds include: a Playboy collage, the Supreme logo, a Drake meme and aesthetically pleasing pink flamingos. To top it all off, the mirror light looks like one of those fancy LuMee phone cases Kim Kardashian has. Fancy!
Bathroom #selfie galore ⚡️ I want that wallpaper 😍

Mandy’s
2067 Crescent St, Montreal
Gourmet salads and fresh juices with a side of aesthetically pleasing bathroom decor? Oui, s’il vous plait! (That’s French for: yes, please.)

Otto’s Bierhalle
1087 Queen St W, Toronto
At Otto’s Bierhalle—which FYI does brunch just as well as it does beer and bratwurst—pressing the red button is highly encouraged. With disco lights and a bumping sound system, you can drop the beat after dropping a load.
@filausa sponsor me? :-)

Tomo
109 Clarence St, Ottawa
This trendy Japanese restaurant/night club has lined its bathroom stalls with blown-up Manga images. There’s ample space in these pretty private toilet rooms, which is a plus for seflie-takers after an #OOTD post.

This fancy-shmancy “$$$$” modern German restaurant is on The Diner Club‘s list of “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.” Its second highest achievement: cool, colourful graffiti bathrooms.
Wondering if I can rip this paper off the walls and take it home with me 🍷✨🌿

Canada
Today was supposed to be a quiet day before our Stampede activities commence tomorrow... not quite.  We headed of downtown to have a look around and see some of the festivities.  Everything is centred around Stampede, there were square dancing demos, a parade of cowboys and Indians going down the mall, there were line-dancers in the square, as well as lots of pop-up stalls for sales opportunities.
I think Charmaine and I were about the only ones in town without a cowboy hat, soon fixed that..yeehaw.  We grabbed a bratwurst from one of the vans for lunch... ah death by sausage.  We went up the Calgary Tower for a good look at the city but unfortunately the smoke haze from the wildfires limited our view of the mountains.  It was still worth the look.
We headed back home to get ready for our dinner at what is supposed to be the best steakhouse around Calgary and is located at a place called Longview about 50k from where we are staying.  On the way we went through one of the biggest hailstorms I have ever seen and it was a complete whiteout.  Apparently this storms are commonplace here and nobody was really concerned.  We hit the restaurant and order up.  How good was the food.
On the way home we had to call into a small town call Black Diamond and have a drink in the hotel.  This place is miles from nowhere and is one of the best bars I have ever seen and was packed full of people.  Great stop.
Tomorrow we start our Stampede activities.  Looking forward to it.
