Its historical treasures, dating back to between the 8th and 14th centuries, include a hill fortress, palaces, places of worship (Jama Masjid is one of the most spectacular mosques in Gujarat), residential areas, reservoirs, and step wells.

Instead of Jaisalmer: Osian in Rajasthan
Tumblr media
Osian is perfect for those who want to avoid the commercial desert tourism in Jaisalmer and have a peaceful camel safari experience. This small town is situated about an hour and a half north of Jodhpur, on the way to Bikaner. Its surrounded by several sand dunes. Intricately carved stone temples, dating from the 8th to 11th centuries when Osian was an important trading center, are an added attraction. The main one is a Sun Temple dedicated to Surya the Sun god. Stay at Osian Sand Dunes Resort and Camp or Reggie's Camel Camp.

Instead of the Sundarbans: Pichavaram Mangroves in Tamil Nadu
Tumblr media
You can be forgiven if you didn't know about Pichavaram mangrove forest, despite it being one of the world's largest mangrove jungles (the Sundarbans National Park in West Bengal is the largest). After all, it's not on the tourist trail. However, this remarkable and fascinating place is definitely worth visiting. Spread over nearly 3,000 acres, it has 4,400 big and small canals that can be explored by boat. In addition, Chidambaram Nataraj Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva in his dancing form) is not far away.

Instead of Varkala Beach: Kannur in Kerala
Tumblr media
The small town of Kannur, in northern Kerala, is known for its secluded beaches, mysterious masked spirit-possession theyyam rituals, and hand loom weaving. The theyyam season runs from October until May and Kerala Tourism has a comprehensive calendar of theyyam events. There are some delightful, laid back (and inexpensive) beach houses in the Thottada beach area, such as Kannur Beach House, Waves Beach Resort, Chera Rock Beach House, and KK Heritage Homestay. Kannur district is also home to Muzhappilangad Drive-In Beach. You can drive all the way along its vast stretch of sand.

Instead of Kanha National Park: Kawardha in Chhattisgarh
Tumblr media
Thinking of visiting famous Kanha National Park but want to avoid the crowds and prefer nature over tiger spotting? Bhoramdeo Jungle Retreat is a few hours drive away and has three atmospheric cottages nestled in the Maikal Hills, close to the ancient Bhoramdeo temple complex. The owner is a native of the area and has an excellent rapport with the indigenous villagers, who belong to the Baiga and Gond tribes. Guests can visit their tolas (villages) and colorful weekly haats (tribal markets). Treks into the jungle are offered, and the butterflies, birds and wildlife are exceptional. It's also possible to go on longer treks into the Maikal Hills, staying in villagers' homes.

Instead of Manali: Kalap in Uttarakhand
Tumblr media
Manali in Himachal Pradesh attracts plenty of adventure seekers, who come to enjoy its surrounding village trekking trails. However, to go where very few tourists have gone before, head to Kalap, 7,500 feet above sea level in the upper Garhwal region of northern Uttarakhand. This tiny village is not accessible by road or rail (you'll need to trek, and porters and mules are provided). A responsible tourism project was started there in 2013 to help the villagers generate an income. You can stay with them and experience their way of life, as well as spend time in the pristine surroundings.
13 of 15
Instead of Nagarhole in Karnataka: Pollachi in Tamil Nadu
Tumblr media
Nagarhole National Park is one of the top national parks in India. It gets its name from the snake-like river that winds its way through it. However, the government-run minibus safaris through the park tend to be rather disappointing and noisy and private safaris are costly. Alternatively, Pollachi in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu is an unexplored place teaming with wildlife, plus Anamalai Tiger Reserve is in the area. The annual Kongu Nadu Cattle Festival, held in January, is also a highlight. Thadam Experiences offers customized trips including bird watching, nature walks, boat rides, village and farm visits, and tea tours. Grass Hills Tours and Travels is also a reputable company that specializes in local nature and wildlife tourism. Stay at Coco Lagoon Resort, or the cheaper Coconut County Farm Stay.
14 of 15
Instead of Hyderabad and Golconda: Gandikota, Andhra Pradesh
Tumblr media
Golconda Fort near Hyderabad is one of the top forts in India. However, about seven hours south of the city are the ruins of another fort that hardly anyone is familiar with, despite the fact that it was possessed by many powerful rulers including the Chalukyas, Pemmasani Nayaks, Golconda Sultanate, Mughals (under Aurangzeb), and the British. Gandikota is a fort on a gorge in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. The gorge is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of India. It's possible to kayak along the Penna River, hike along the gorge, and enjoy spectacular star-lit nights and sunrises over the canyon. Accommodations are limited in the area. If you don't want to stay at the Haritha hotel run by Andhra Pradesh Tourism or camp by the canyon, Royal County is the best option although it's an hour from Gandikota.

Instead of Goa: Maharashtra's Konkan Coast
Tumblr media
North of Goa, across the border in Maharashtra, the Konkan Coast offers a bounty of beautiful beaches that are among the most pristine in the country. Delightfully off the tourist trail, they are devoid of much development and many are practically deserted. Inexpensive beachfront homestays are popping up in many places, and you'll get mouthwatering home-cooked coastal cuisine. If you'd prefer somewhere with more facilities yet still noncommercial, Gokarna in Karnataka is ideal.

Something different! Tiny break from all the random ones I’ve taken recently.
Name a movie starring... Survey by aussielozzie
Gary Sinise: I’ve honestly never heard of him before. The name is a *little* familiar, but I know nothing else about him.
Tom Hanks: Toy Story 1-4! The first one will always be my favorite animated movie of all time. So good.
Melanie Griffiths: I’m not familiar with her work but I do know she’s Dakota Johnson’s mom, so at least I have that going for me.
Angelina Jolie: Salt. I remember watching it with my mom at the cinema when it premiered like 10 years ago. It wouldn’t normally be my type of movie, but I was really into Angelina then so we watched it together.
Lindsay Lohan: Herbie, omg this was one of my favorites as a kid. I used to be really excited whenever it was the movie Disney was airing in the evening because they showed it so rarely.
Rachel McAdams: The Vow, The Notebook, Spotlight, Mean Girls... I love her, so I’ve seen a bunch of her films. My guilty pleasure favorite would be The Vow, but the best movie of hers that I’ve watched is Spotlight.
Brad Pitt: World War Z, I think? I barely remember that movie; I slept through it.
Cameron Diaz: Uhh the Shrek movies, but I’ve only seen the second one. Never knew she voiced Fiona until years later.
Gwyneth Paltrow: Shakespeare in Love, though I only largely know of her role because she won an Oscar for it and yet the wildly popular opinion is that she didn’y deserve to win Best Actress.
Hugh Grant: LOVE ACTUALLY ONE OF MY FAVS. I honestly really liked the storyline he was part of even though a lot of people didn’t haha, I thought he was great at playing the dorky Prime Minister.
Juliette Lewis: I know of Julia Louis-Dreyfus but not her haha, sorry. Close enough.
Johnny Depp: Edward Scissorhands. Can’t say I’m a fan of his movies, but I’m aware of a number of them just because they’ve always been popular.
Liv Tyler: Ooooh I’ve always thought she’s sooooo beautiful but I don’t think I can name one of her movies without having to look it up :(
Halle Berry: Catwoman.
Queen Latifah: Not sure if I can cite a movie of hers, I know who she is but not really familiar with anything else about her.
Sharon Stone: I’m pretty sure she’s in that movie with the famous scene of her in white with her legs crossed. I’m just not sure what the name is.
Keira Knightley: Again, Love Actually. That movie was such a hodgepodge of big Hollywood names. I’m all over it.
Tom Cruise: Eyes Wide Shut. Can’t let this survey go without a hint of Kubrick :)
Ben Affleck: Gone Girl!!!!!!!!! Intense movie that I honestly associate more with Rosamund Pike, but you asked for Ben Affleck so there ya go. He was in Good Will Hunting too, but I also associate this movie more with Matt Damon and Minnie Driver. I don’t really care for Ben, I guess lol.
Jennifer Garner: 13 Going On 30. <3 Also one of my favorites.
Demi Moore: “She’s the act-RESS that was in Disclosure, Indecent Proposal, Ghost.” Those who watch Friends will know, heheh.
Ashton Kutcher: No Strings Attached. Nothing much to share about it as I haven’t seen it.
Sandra Bullock: The Proposal – easily the best romcom ever. Would be very happy and willing to die on such a hill.
Jim Carrey: The Mask. I have a lot of fond memories laughing over this with my sister and cousins when I was much younger. But also...Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Such an important film to me.
Renee Zellweger: Bridget Jones’s Diary, but I’ve never seen it.
Nicole Kidman: Eyes Wide Shut, and the film I can’t watch more than once, The Hours. She was also in The Killing of A Sacred Deer if I remember correctly.
Eddie Murphy: Dreamgirls. I specifically remember this because I watched this movie at an age where I was supposed to be nowhere near it (only watched it for Beyoncé lol) and Eddie Murphy played a really vulgar character. He said a lot of innuendos that went over my head as a kid that I was terrified to learn about as an adult.
Mike Myers: Cat in the Hat...lol
Adam Sandler: 50 First Dates! Such a bittersweet story but still makes me feel warm and fuzzy in all the right places. :)
Ben Stiller: Night at the Museum, I think.
Keanu Reeves: John Wick, which I know nearly everyone loves but I have not seen it. Doesn’t seem like my type of movie though so I don’t know if I’ll ever plan on watching.
Hillary Swank: Million Dollar Baby. I have wanted to watch this for the longest time, idk why I never got around to it.
Kirsten Dunst: The Virgin Suicides. I’ve also been eyeing this for a while, but I’m scared off by the title tbh. I feel like it would be too triggering for me.
River Phoenix: Stand By Me.
Owen Wilson: I know he’s a Wes Anderson favorite. The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Royal Tenenbaums, etc.
Sean Penn: Into the Wild, but I mostly watched that movie because of Kristen Stewart ha.
Rob Schneider: Not sure if I know of any.
Will Ferrell: Same here.
Jack Black: Nacho Libre. This movie will always be embedded in my mind because I remember when I used to hang out with/babysit one of my baby cousins, my aunt (his mom) used to tell me that I’m free to pick out any movie from their movie shelf except Nacho Libre. That has stuck with me since and to this day I’m kind of scared to watch it hahahaha
John Travolta: Grease.
Toni Collette: Knives Out, Hereditary, and of course, the ever-depressing I’m Thinking of Ending Things...
Reese Witherspoon: Legally Blonde.
Uma Thurman: Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction.
Kate Winslet: Been waiting for you to drop her name ;) The Reader, Titanic, Steve Jobs, Revolutionary Road, Sense and Sensibility, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Contagion, Heavenly Creatures, the Divergent movies...and now Ammonite. I looooooooove Kate Winslet.
Kate Hudson: How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days, that I couldn’t finish because it was too corny for me.

5 Easy Tips for Finding the Best Hotels in Darjeeling
Tumblr media
Darjeeling is among the top tourist destinations in India. It is known for its enticing tea gardens and spectacular views of the Kanchenjunga. From witnessing some breathtaking views to feasting on delicious momos and thupkas, there is a lot to do in this beautiful hill station. But first, you need to find a suitable hotel room for you.
The best hotels in Darjeeling are mostly booked months in advance. Being a prime holiday destination, the demand is always high. There are plenty of hotels, resorts and home stays here. Below given are a few important things to keep in mind when looking for a hotel in Darjeeling.
Look up the reviews
When looking at potential hotels for a stay in Darjeeling, make sure you go through the online reviews at various travel portals, booking websites, blogs, and such. Reading the testimonials of past guests gives you a better idea about the hotel’s amenities and service quality. Is the bathroom as clean as the pictures claim? Does the room heater work? Is the food good? You can find answers to these important questions in these reviews. This helps you to make a more informed decision. You can compare various hotels and choose the right one.
Rooms with Kanchenjunga views
A trip to Darjeeling can never be complete without catching a glimpse of the majestic Kanchenjunga. The best hotels in Darjeeling offer a grand view of these snow-clad peaks right through your room window. Imagine waking up to the sight of the Kanchenjunga as you sip warm refreshing tea in the balcony! Sounds like a blissful dream, doesn’t it?  If your budget allows for it, make sure to check-in to a hotel that offers rooms with glorious views of Kanchenjunga.
Tumblr media
Near Mall Road
The location of a hotel is key deciding factor when zeroing in on hotels. If your Darjeeling trip is going to be all about sightseeing and shopping, it will make sense to be looking at hotels that are close to Chowrasta in Mall Road. It acts as the city centre – the hub of shopping and eateries. All major transport is also easily available from here. If your intent is to roam around, staying at Mall Road would be an ideal choice.
Properties near Tea Plantations
While some like to be close to the city centre, others might prefer the peace and quiet of staying in solitude. If you’re looking for calm serenity in Darjeeling, search for hotels that are located nearby sprawling tea estates. The lush green tea gardens are a pleasing sight to see. Some of the best hotels in Darjeeling promise a charming view of tea gardens on one side and snow-capped peaks on the other side. Enjoy the tranquil surroundings of nature.
Add-on features
Before booking any hotel, make sure you check the list of amenities they provide. Free Wi-Fi, complimentary breakfast, in-house restaurant for dining, rented car service are some of the things to look for. A hotel with an Ayurvedic spa might be an added bonus. Some hotels even offer pick-up and drop service to the airport or railway station. These are things to consider when booking a hotel.
