The distance from Lake Kariba to Harare is some 370 km. The first 78 km we drove on a good road winding through a hilly area in wide curves up and down towards the A1 which is the major connection between Lusaka and Harare the capital of Zimbabwe. Bruno already warned us that as soon as we would turn on the A1 the situation would change to a road full of potholes, trucks and construction work. It turned out exactly as outlined and our average speed dropped considerably. Some of these holes were really nasty and if we could not avoid them because they spread across the whole width of the road we had to jump on the brakes to roll through as slow as possible. The road also broke of left and right in a steep decline so that turning on the gravel shoulder wasn’t an option. One of our 4x4s punctured two wheels and dented two rims at the same time when driving too fast into a deep pothole.
All these obstacles lead to a 7 hour drive with a lunch stop at „The Lion’s Den“ where excellent burgers were served with no waiting time at all. The second half after the break was much better but still we had to drive „Indian Style“ in order not to loose too much time.
We arrived in Harare around 15:30, got the car washed had two very crispy tacos at a food truck at the gas station. A lady started talking to us in excellent English. It turned out that she studied in Dallas and now served the „best“ tacos in town. Her name was „Sonia“ and she was ready to jump into the car to join us. After a lot of laughs we drove to „Highland House“ our lodge for the night.
The temperatures were very pleasant the whole day. Much cooler and a „tad bit nippy“ in the evening as Michael our rally friend from Jersey called it. Harare lies at an altitude of 1500 meters. When we came into the outskirts we had the impression of a rough city where the well to be hide in large compounds fenced off with long and high walls and barbed wire on top. Our hotel was in a suburb in an area where all the embassies were located. Streets got nicer, cleaner and everything was well kept.
After the usual „buffet“ dinner we went to bed early. Tomorrow we shall head to Mozambik.

14 Of The Safest Countries in Africa
A lot of people assume that the continent of Africa is unsafe. This has mainly been caused by false and bias portrayal by the media. When the average person hears of Africa, they automatically think of the worst, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. We have been to many countries in Africa and each country has its own unique gift and vibe and we have never had our lives in danger at any moment. We have even extended our stays in some of these countries because we were simply having too much fun. We believe that every single place on Earth should be visited at least once and it would be unfair to miss out on experiencing the beautiful continent of Africa.
In recent years, Africa’s profile has been steadily rising due to the big media push surrounding Ghana’s Year of Return. This has put Africa on people’s radar as another destination to explore. For many, visiting anywhere in Africa will be a first-time experience so we decided to write a full list of the 20 safest countries in Africa. This list will highlight the places to see, what to expect and places to stay if you are a tourist visiting for the first time.
1. Rwanda
Rwanda is by far the safest country in Africa. The vibe of the country is very relaxed. If you want to travel solo to an African country. You have to start by visiting Rwanda. The crime rate is so low. According to the Gallup Global Law and Order Report, Rwanda is ranked as the 11th safest country in the entire World since 2017. In addition to this, the people are so warm and welcoming.
The place to visit in Rwanda is the city of Kigali. The city is very beautiful and a great display of African modernity. While you are in the city, we suggest you should visit the Genocide Memorial, the Inema Arts center, the Grand Presidential Palace, and many more. You will get a strong sense of the countri’s past, present, and future.
The nightlife in Kigali is unforgettable, there are many bars and clubs playing live music. There is always an event every night. For a night to remember, visit Iriba Bar, Pili Pili, K Club. The atmosphere, the drinks, the music, and the food will make you want to visit Rwanda every year.
In terms of where to stay in Kigali. Definitely stay Kigali Serena Hotel. There are also some beautiful boutique hotels you can stay in such as the Heaven Boutique Hotel.
If you love to shop. You should visit the Kigali Cultural Village. There are so many stalls selling everything from clothing to art to food. The atmosphere is truly an unforgettable experience. I’m sure you will find something that catches our eye that will be the perfect gift for yourself or someone else.
One tip to note is that on the final Saturday of every month is Umuganda. It is basically a day of nationwide community service. So everyone does their part for the community by cleaning the streets and helping out with other general stuff. During this time a lot of places are closed or have limited opening hours. So be aware of this day when you are booking your flight and hotel.
2. Botswana
Botswana has amazing political stability. As a result of this stability, it has led to a very low crime rate in the country.
One of the most exciting things about this country is the Wildlife. You will be immersed in the natural world so quickly. It feels like you are in another World. Kalahari Desert and many other areas offer epic views that have you photographic every single moment of your trip. There are other parts such as Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park.
There is so much diversity in terrain. If you enjoy outdoor activities a trip to Botswana is much needed as there is a wide range of outdoor activities, you can get involved in. One of the things you have to experience is the Moremi safari so you can have an opportunity to see the Big 5 which are the rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, and buffalo.
Botswana is one of the friendliest and safest African countries and I am sure you will enjoy it thoroughly.
3. Mauritius
The beaches in Mauritius are absolutely beautiful. It is very safe and is known to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the World. There is also plenty of opportunities to see different varieties of wildlife. There are also opportunities to go hiking. The terrain of the country is made of mountains and dunes. It’s perfect if you like to be at one with nature while going on a hike.
In terms of where to, we recommend you stay in Balaclava. When it comes to which accommodation to choose, the best places to stay in Mauritius is Maradive Resort and Spa, Degrees Sud, The St Regis Mauritius Resort. Mauritius has many instagrammable boutique hotels that will make any guest feel like they are the King or Queen of The World.
When it comes to partying, the best place to party is in Grand Baie. There are so many cool beach parties with world-class DJ’s to enjoy. There are also many beach bars, sports bars, and clubs to choose from to ensure you have an epic night every night.
4. Seychelles
Seychelles is absolutely stunning. It is located off the east coast of Kenya. It is made up of over 115 islands. Seychelles is mostly pretty safe. Most people that go and visit actually experience no problems. However, you still should remain very vigilant and don’t create opportunities to attract petty thieves. Just in case, it is advised to carry your High Spirit Anti-Theft Backpack to prevent any pickpockets from taking your most valuable items.
Seychelles has a wide range of accommodations to suit any taste. The best places to stay in Seychelles are Mahe, Praslin, and La Digue.
These places are very tourist-friendly and have many bars and clubs so you can fully experience the Seychelles nightlife without holding back.
In terms of getting around, you can island hop by using the island’s reliable ferries.
5. Ethiopia
Ethiopia is extremely safe. Violent and Non-violent crimes are very rare. However, you have to still be vigilant of petty crime or pickpockets. It is important to have your anti-theft bag or High Spirit Bag with you to ensure your stuff is safe and secure while you travel.
In terms of accommodation, hotels in Addis Ababa are really cheap. One of the places to stay in is Biruk Bed and Breakfast in Bole, which is an upscale neighborhood in the city. Also, you can consider staying in The Sheraton Addis. It’s a huge luxury hotel and will give you the experience of living like a celebrity for the entirety of your trip.
When it comes to the nightlife in Addis. It is second to none. All the best clubs and bars are in Belo or in Piazza. Due to the proximity, it makes it a little easier to bar hop and get a full taste of the Ethiopian nightlife.
6. Zambia
Zambia is generally very safe. As with anywhere in the World, it is still important to still be vigilant especially in large cities.
Lusaka is the capital of Zambia and there are loads of bars and clubs to get your boogie on. There are a few places we would like to recommend that will enable you to have an unforgettable night. We suggest you visit the Alpha Bar. There is always something exciting happening there. It is definitely worth checking out. Lusaka is a buzzing city, so we are sure that you will find some cool bars and clubs to have a good time.
In Zambia, it is best to stay in a hotel that gives you easy access to different places in the city. Hotels like the Neelkanth Sarovar Premier and The Hilton Garden Inn are great suggestions for places to stay in Lusaka, Zambia. Their service and location are fantastic elements to ensure you have a wonderful time in Zambia.
7. Ghana
Ghana is currently number 44 on the Global Peace Index. This is a huge indicator of how safe the country is and how modern and forward-looking the country is.
I remember being in Accra, which is the capital city of Ghana walking at night and it felt so safe. I didn’t feel unsafe for one second. Everyone is focused on their own thing and really welcoming and friendly.
If it is your first-ever trip to Africa. We would suggest you visit Ghana first to get an experience of how great African cities and societies function. They say that Ghana is Africa for beginners. Once you have visited Ghana it will set the precedent of what you can expect when you visit other countries in Africa.
For a number of years, the country has had great political stability and it is currently going through a transformation where it is opening itself more to the World. Which is a very exciting opportunity for the country and its people. As mentioned before, one of the things I loved about Ghana was how friendly and peaceful the people were.
In terms of the nightlife. It is absolutely epic. There are so many bars, clubs, and restaurants in Accra, especially on Oxford Street in the Osu area. The vibe of the city feels positive, energetic and you feel very safe and secure.
Places to stay are in Osu, Oxford Street, or East Legon. These are great locations as you will be in the center of the action and buzz in the city. Also, there is easy access to upscale bars, restaurants, and nightclubs to sink your teeth into.
8. Swaziland
Swaziland is very safe. Swaziland actually has a low population. It currently only has over 1 million people in the country. The people are very friendly and welcoming.
In terms of where to stay, you can stay at the Summerfield Botanical Garden or Mountain Inn. These are places where you will be embraced by the natural beauty of Swaziland.
The nightlife is mainly in Ezulwini and Mbabane. There is live music, bars, restaurants. There are many places that give you the opportunity to soak up the atmosphere, culture, and the positive vibes of the country.
9. Senegal
Senegal is politically stable. As with anywhere in the World crime is usually a petty crime, which is mostly made up of pickpocketing. It is still important to take the necessary precautions and carry your anti-theft backpack with you, so you do not become an easy victim. But according to our experience, crimes against tourists are very rare.
Senegalese are very positive and welcoming people. They are also very keen to share their culture with you. They treat people, especially tourists with respect, and are willing to go over and beyond to ensure you have a positive experience in their country.
As you visit Senegal. We suggest you stay in the capital, Dakar. In the city, there is so much to do and you will get a full offering of the country’s vibrant culture and its people.
In terms of places to stay. We would suggest staying in the Radisson Blue hotel. It is absolutely beautiful. The décor of the hotel is truly amazing and inspiring. It’s got an infinity pool, which gives you a beautiful view of the ocean. The rooms are state of the art and very modern. If you decide to stay there, you will definitely have a splendid time. If you want to stay in a boutique hotel. There are plenty of gorgeous boutique hotels that offer an elegant and vibrant experience. Boutique hotels such as The Djoloff Hotel and The La Residence Dakar are great choices for a unique and beautiful experience.
The Senegalese love to party. The nightlife in Dakar is absolutely brilliant. There are so many bars to choose from. There is literally a bar or a club to suit every taste. If you decide to go on a night out in Dakar, check out Le Phare des Mamelles. The view in that bar is outstanding. Also, check out Le Patio. There is nothing more to say except that you will definitely have a night to remember there!
10. The Gambia
The Gambia is the smallest country on the African continent. It’s nickname is ‘The Smiling Coast of Africa.’ It is a very fitting nickname as The Gambia is actually one of the safest countries on the African continent. For tourists (travelling in groups or solo travellers) it is totally safe to travel around and it is trouble free. However, it is still important to take the necessary precautions because The Gambia does have a small issue with pickpockets. But if you remain aware of your surroundings or wear your anti-theft backpack in crowded areas you will be fine.
In terms of where to stay. We would suggest you stay anywhere on the Senegambia strip as there are a lot of hotels, bars and restaurants. It is pretty busy, so we are sure you will be able to find some cool places to be entertained and get your groove on. We suggest staying at the Woodpecker resort or the Ocean Bay Hotel and Resort. A lot of the hotels in Banjul are pretty nice, so definitely find one that will give you then best deal.
When it comes to the nightlife in The Gambia. A lot of the nightlife is mostly concentrated in Serrekunda, in the resort town of Kaloli. There are also plenty of wonderful bars and clubs in the township of Kotu to chack out as well.
 11. Malawi
Malawi is a landlocked country. It is bordered by Zambia, Mozambique, and Tanzania. It is nicknamed as the ‘Warm Heart of Africa.’ It is very safe and is very popular amongst solo travellers. According to its history. It has never had a civil war. Which is very rare in the continent of Africa. In comparison to the region and its neighbouring countries, the crime rate is very low. According to the World Economic Forum Malawi is said to be one of the safest countries in Africa. However, as I keep mentioning. It is still important to take the necessary precautions to protect your belongings, just in case. There is nowhere on the planet that has no crime of pickpockets. So, it’s crucial to still be aware wherever you are in the World.
If you are thinking of where to stay in Malawi. If you are staying in the capital city of Lilongwe. We suggest you stay at Latitude 13 degrees. The hotel is simply gorgeous. If you want to experience beachside luxury during your trip, definitely check out Kaya Mawa. It Is located on Likoma Island.
When it comes to nightlife, it has little bars and clubs that will satisfy the typical party animal. But it is very modest. However, there is an abundance of dancing displays and live music events that will be provided by the hotel or nearby bars in the area.
12. Uganda
Uganda is a very safe, secure, and politically stable country. According to the Government, there has been an increase in police on the streets. This has proved to be very effective as it has caused crime to be reduced by over 50% especially in the city of Kampala. The efforts in increasing police response and ensuring there is no civil unrest has solidified Uganda as a safe haven for group tourists and solo travellers from around the World.
When it comes to choosing accommodation for your trip. Kampala has a wide range of luxury hotels and stylish boutiques to choose from. One luxury hotel that made a positive lasting impression on us was the Kampala Serena Hotel. The rooms are so beautiful and elegant. It has restaurants in the hotel that serve the most delicious meals. Definitely try some Ugandan cuisine and also try some authentic Ugandan coffee. It tastes like heaven. That is the best way I can describe it. There are other hotels such as the Kabira Country Club that also provide you with a luxurious African experience during your stay.
Kampala’s nightlife is very well known amongst other African’s living in the continent. It is known that people from all over Africa travel to Uganda to experience Kampala’s wonderful nightlife. The clubs actually don’t close at 3 am, they are open till the next morning. Speaking from personal experience, the only times I have ever partied from night until in the morning (like 10 am in the morning) has been in Africa. African’s definitely know how to party. Especially Ugandans. If you are looking for some cool spots in Kampala to let your hair down. Definitely visit Hollywood in Kampala, also check out Guvnor. There are so many little bars and clubs where you can easily club hop and make your night one to remember
 13. Madagascar
Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the World. Madagascar is a truly unique and beautiful island. The overall crime rate in the country is low so it is considered safe to travel to. If you are the type of traveller that likes an adventure Madagascar is the perfect destination. It has the World’s most unique biodiversity. During your visit, you will definitely see some rare plants and animals. In addition, the people are so friendly and kind. A trip to Madagascar will be a life-changing trip.
If you are looking for a place to stay in Madagascar. We suggest you stay in the North-Eastern part of the island, such as Nosy Boraha. Hotels such as Les Lemuriens and Samaria Lodge are great choices to have a unique and pleasant stay in Madagascar.
When it comes to the nightlife. You should check out Taxi Be and Le point d'exclamation. They are both in the capital of Antananarivo. There are also loads of bars and clubs you can enjoy. There are also a lot of great spots for live music if you want a more immersive experience.
 14. South Africa
South Africa overall is very safe to travel to and explore. The country has so much natural beauty. There are many big cities within South Africa such as Johannesburg, Capetown, Durban, and many others that offer something different and special. There are some bits of petty crime such as pickpockets but as long as you have your anti-theft backpack with you and you keep your belongings close you will be fine. No country on Earth Is perfect and to expect perfection in a country is totally unrealistic. Another thing to be aware of is that tourist hotspots are controlled and protected by the authorities, so you will feel safe and secure during your trip.
South Africa is a very large country. It is the 9th biggest country in Africa. So when it comes to choosing a place to stay you will be spoiled for choice. If you are staying in Capetown, you may want to consider staying in the Atlantic View Capetown Boutique Hotel or Raddison Blu Waterfront. If you are staying in Johannesburg, you may want to consider staying at the Munro Boutique Hotel or Villa Simmone Hotel. If you are staying in Durban, you may want to consider staying at the Hilton Durban. Ensure you stay at a hotel with great customer service and great security. That is super important.
South Africa has so much variety when it comes to the nightlife. There are so many clubs and bars in Capetown. In Capetown, there is an area called Long street, which has a lot of bars, clubs, and restaurants. Johannesburg has Rosebank and Durban has a lot of jazz clubs. There is something for everybody in these cities.
Visiting Africa will be a unique experience. It will be like nothing you have experienced before. So, when you travel to any of the African countries, remember to immerse yourself in the culture, the vibe, and the activities. It will definitely make a positive impact on your life.

THE JOURNEY BACK.
8th February - 11th February
Lusaka - Choma 300 km (Kozo Botique)
Choma - Nata 550 km (Nata lodge)
Nata - Gaborone 620 km (Mokolodi Nature Reserve and Lifestyle@village)
Gaborone - Johannesburg 500kms (mommy)
The drive back seems a lot longer than the one up. I think it's because we are both exhausted due to a few full days of driving on trechourus roads, which takes it out of you physically and mentally (not to mention we both have scurvy).
To add to the fun, our window wipers stopped working in Lusaka. Then 300kms into our 2000km drive south we hit the hugest storm and had to pull into a roadside hotel because we couldn't see 1cm in front of us without wipers.
Tumblr media
Before entering Botswana on Saturday, we thought best to stop in Livingstone to get the wipers fixed as it was still raining and we didnt want to have to deal with the cops. Also, being able to see the road would be an added benefit.
Auto World in town sent us to the coolest autoelectricion called Jack, who lives in the compound on the outskirts of the Victoria Falls. This is where it's happening. Not only was Jack able to fix our problem but his little 11 year old son, Samu, did most of the work. This kid was so hands on, snatching parts from others so he could do the job himself, what passion at such a young age! Jack and his crew are everything I love about Zambia and I hope our paths cross again (just not for big car problems - small ones only).
Tumblr media
Matt still had some work to do, so before we crossed over the border into Botswana we stopped off at a village on the banks of the Zambezi to see what's happening with the food crisis (he was there last year for his climate story). I would definitely say this was my first time in "the village". Usually this is anywhere outside of Lusaka but I'm taking about the REAL village. The mud-huts-washing-clothes-in-the-river-dirty-roads-kind-of-village.
While Matt was off filming in the maize field, I found myself surrounded by all the kids (as usual). We had the best time sharing a small packet of niknaks between 15 of us, high-fiving over and over, me speaking Nyanja (them laughing) and all of us playing circle games. They found it hilarious that I knew all the games and songs, which were the exact same ones that my kids at school used to play at break.
Tumblr media
Then, driving the length of Botswana (in one and a half days) we had a VERY close call with a cow who stepped out right in front of our car on the highway. As well as with a truck who decided to swerve for potholes while we were overtaking. Driving in Botswana is the worst (well the most dangerous). The only nice part of the drive was through what's called Hunter's Road. We saw so many elephant, giraffe, kudu, baboons, birds and monkeys all next to (or on) the main road.
Tumblr media
Two and a half days on the road after leaving Lusaka, we pulled into Gaborone, exhausted (let's just say there was alot of moaning and complaining coming from my side when we had to put up the tent for the night). We are only 500kms from JHB now, which seems so close I can almost smell my mom's homemade cooking (pity there's loadshedding haha).
Tumblr media
I really hope that one day we will be able to explore more of Namibia and Botswana. There is just SO SO much to see. But one thing is for sure, this trip reinforced how much I love Southern Africa. It is the only place in the world I want to be.

Hotel Etiquettes
As the vacation begins, some of you just embark on staycations, especially those provided by some of the best hotels in Zambia. There is some hotel etiquette that has to be followed while staying in some of the luxurious hotels, which gives experience to some of the best accommodations. Below are some dos and don'ts that have to be kept in mind, right from treating the staff to experiencing the amenities.
Do’s:
Plan: Every time you make reservations, make sure to always plan to avoid chaos. It can be anything—a spa, restaurant, gym, or any other facility. By making reservations, you book your spot in advance so that it does not clash with another.
Utilise the caretaker service: When you are staying in luxury hotels Lusaka, you can for sure take the help of the hospitality team, because no one other than them can do the best in enhancing your experience.
Relish the Comforts: Make use of and indulge in all the luxury amenities like a spa, fitness centre, pool, and other amenities that are provided by the luxury hotels.
Respect the staff: Be mindful of and courteous to the hotel staff. A welcoming demeanour creates a good vibe, and they are there to make your stay unforgettable.
Don’ts:
Follow Check-in Procedures: Immediately follow the hotel's check-in instructions. By doing this, you can arrive with ease and take advantage of the facilities sooner.
Avoid overusing complementary products. Pay attention to how you use the complimentary stuff in your accommodation. It is considered impolite to take too much.
Never skip room inspections. When the hospitality team approaches, never skip or avoid hotel inspections. It helps in improving the sanity and standards of the hotel.
Limit your demands: Luxury hotels aim to satisfy their customers, but they should refrain from making irrational requests. Please be understanding if demands cannot be granted.
By following these dos and don'ts, you're adding to the peaceful ambience of the luxury hotel in addition to improving your own experience. In the lap of luxury, relish your stay and create treasured memories in the best hotels in Lusaka.

56 bands in 5 days: My Top 15 shows at SXSW 2022
Tumblr media
1. Gustaf at Augustine (Brooklyn, NY) - Over jagged guitars and quirky dance rhythms harkening to the B-52s and Gang of Four, singer Lydia Gammill ranted and raged with such theatrical gusto that she jumped offstage, pushed photographers aside, pawed her way through the crowd and sang most of the first song while lying face down on the venue floor. Eventually, the band’s punk angst transformed into ferocious fun, with Gammill admitting to the crowd that “the bit” needs a break every now and then. She then launched into the disarming “(I Hope You’re) Happy,” which started with a smirk but ended as a wish.
Tumblr media
2. Abby Hamilton at Idle Hands (Lexington, KY) - The most telling sign of a new artist’s impact at SXSW is how fast they can stop a crowd devouring free food in mid-forkful. Hamilton is a country star waiting to happen, a gifted singer-songwriter who conveys the clever nuances of Nashville with the twang-pop soulfulness of early Lucinda Williams. Her powerful voice literally turned heads as she sang about the pitfalls of dating older men and living on Tito’s and corn chips and threw herself into the hard-rocking “Change Things.”
Tumblr media
3.  TEKE::TEKE at Cheer Up Charlie’s (Montreal, Canada) - Nothing says SXSW like witnessing a seven-member band from Canada blending surf guitars, flute, trombone, and traditional Japanese instruments into a soaring, psychedelic blast.
Tumblr media
4. W.I.T.C.H. at Hotel Vegas Patio (Lusaka, Zambia) - One of psychedelic rock’s best kept secrets is an east African band who released their first album in 1974 with lead singer Emanuel "Jagari" Chanda. Rediscovered recently via vinyl reissues of their catalog, Chanda has joined forces with a younger band of Dutch rockers including Jacco Gardner and can still command the stage and overpower the wah-wah guitars with his roaring voice and funky showmanship.
Tumblr media
5. Wet Leg at Half Step (Isle of Wight, UK) - Excuse me: If you were betting this duo who broke through last year with the relentlessly catchy “Chaise Longue” was just a one-novelty hit wonder, their SXSW showcase would have been a huge disappointment for you. Greeted by the packed house like the indie-rock heroes they are, Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers twirled in unison with their guitars and previewed a few unreleased songs from their forthcoming debut album with remarkable cool and confidence.
Tumblr media
6. The Continental Drifters at Lucy’s Fried Chicken (Los Angeles/New Orleans) - The roots-rock supergroup featuring Susan Cowsill, Vicki Peterson of The Bangles and Peter Holsapple of the dB’s reunited on stage for the first time in 5 years and celebrated the occasion with a glorious extended afternoon set that exuded all the playfulness of an open rehearsal. They traded lead vocals on original songs like “The Rain Song” and “I Want to Learn to Waltz with You” and their trademark covers of Gram Parsons’ “A Song For You,” Michael Nesmith’s “Some of Shelly’s Blues,” Alive and Kicking’s “Tighter and Tighter” and a mindblowing rampage through Richard Thompson’s “You’re Going to Need Somebody.”
Tumblr media
7. Blunt Bangs at The Green Jay (Athens, GA) - This high octane power pop band fronted by  former Black Kids leader Reggie Youngblood became a late must-see curiosity after I spent the 4 hour drive to Austin hitting the repeat button on the ultra-catchy “She’s Gone." And to emphasize their good taste, they covered Teenage Fanclub’s crunchy “Everything Flows,” an obscure track from 1990’s A Catholic Education.
Tumblr media
8. Cassandra Jenkins at St. David’s Episcopal Church (Brooklyn NY) - My quietest show was also one of the most emotional, with Jenkins and a two-saxophone quartet recreating songs from her stunning 2021 breakthrough An Overview on Phenomenal Nature. “Hailey” and the Laurie Anderson-like “Hard Drive” rocked harder live than on record, while her comforting voice found the perfect balance of being both meditative and moving.
Tumblr media
9. Pom Pom Squad (Brooklyn, NY) at The Pershing - Bandleader Mia Berrin takes no prisoners as she defies all eras, celebrating her affection for everything from girl-group pop to grunge. “Drunk Voicemail” is the only song in history to melodically tap into “Smells Like Teen Spirit” while quoting Melanie’s “Brand New Key,” a move as brazen as it is brilliant.
Tumblr media
10. Horsegirl at Hotel San Jose (Chicago, IL) - Newly signed to Matador Records, the teenage trio, with two guitarists and a drummer, were already generating a buzz before the festival. But on stage, they came across unfazed and unrivaled as they casually churned out a droning, fuzz-fueled racket that drew inspiration from Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine. But within the slow building urgency of “Billy” and “Sea Life Sandwich Boy,” melodies peeked out, proving they can make songs as well as noise. And pretty good ones at that.
Tumblr media
11. Tayla Parx (Los Angeles, CA) at Container Bar - The Dallas native who has been nominated for Grammys as co-writer of hits for Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber is also a dazzling performer who swirls elements of R&B, disco, hip-hop and pop. Between such solo hits as “Dance Alone” and “Fixerupper,” she tested out a few new songs destined for her forthcoming third album, zigzagged octaves and made even her snarky songs sound poignant.
Tumblr media
12. Geese at the Pershing (Brooklyn NY) -  Not to be confused with Goose, Geese is a former teenage basement band that mixes up a volatile blend of classic rock, The Strokes and early ‘80s post punk that unspools into an indescribable but riveting style. Lead singer Cameron Winter prowls and paces the stage, seemingly unsure of what to do when he’s not at the mike but knowing exactly what to do when he is.
Tumblr media
13. Katie Toupin at The Pershing (Louisville, KY) - Celebrating 4 years of sobriety and her uplifting “Astronaut” being adopted by NASA, Toupin brought an undeniable charm and an enrapturing  positivity to a crowd that didn’t seem to know of her previous career as being “formerly of Houndmouth.” Her 2019 album Magnetic Moves cemented her strengths as a solo artist and she clearly enjoyed giving songs like “Someone Like Me” and the title track the post-pandemic showcase they deserved. She reclaimed the Houndmouth hit “Sedona” toward the end of her set, but most of the crowd thought it was a cover. “That’s my song,” she said with a grin, avoiding putting emphasis on the second word and sounding proud, not bitter.
Tumblr media
14. Neal Francis at The Mohawk (Chicago IL) - Armed with a Clavinet customized with a whammy bar, Francis unleashed a flurry of groovy, ‘70s-soaked originals that were expanded into funky, sometimes bluesy jams reminiscent of The Meters and even the Allman Brothers.
Tumblr media
15. The Heavy Hours (Cincinnati, OH) at Geraldine’s - This quartet could be the poster boys for the power of pure pop simplicity - sunny melodies and romantic lyrics delivered with an effortless groove that sits somewhere between Americana and folk. ”Don’t Walk Away,” co-written with Dan Auerbach, was the most instantly irresistible song I’ve heard at SXSW since 2012 when the then-unknown Lumineers wandered into the crowd and unveiled “Ho Hey.”
I also saw: Penelope Isles, Creamer, Jon Dee Graham, Blue Mountain, Flower, The Wild Seeds, Jon Langford, Sun Room, Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard, Merex, Near Beer. Teenage Halloween, Wish Kit, No Ice, Ritt Momney, Ber, +/-, Couch Prints, Grace Cummings, Ural Thomas and the Pain, Roller Derby, Ezra Furman, Yard Act, Self Esteem, Le Ren, Sasami, Night Moves, Baby Queen, Little Quirks, Malen Peterssen, SUSTO, Madison McFerrin, Pillow Queens, Sir Woman, Circuit Des Yeux, Ayoni, Melts, Seratones, Mamalarky, Cuffed Up, and Alex Chilton tribute with English Teeth and guest singers Steve Wynn, John Doe, Chuck Prophet and others  - DO

KneikeVeke
Mandag.
10 kom!!
Fredag va eg ikkje innom kontoret ein gong.
Med ein gong du nevne at noe ikkje er heilt bra så får du bare «you will be fine»
Nærmeste eg kommer er Jolina, men no er ho reist vekk i tre veker og ho vurdere å reise heim før oppholdet er over på grunn av lignende problemer. Det hjelper å møtes for å snakke, samtidig som me drar kvarandre litt ned fordi me sliter.
Alle lyge. Heile tide. Alle er for seine. Dame blir seksuelt trakassert og sett ned på konstant. «She is lady she cant do anything»
Alle stirre på meg daglig SJØL OM EG HAR BUDD HER I OVER FEM MND NO!!!!
Hehe. Glede meg til å knuse de.
Så ja. No sitte eg på sykkelen og reflektere over livet.

Travel at home
I have always been a passionate traveler, with an insatiable curiosity for new experiences, cultures and sensations.  But what also comes with all the titillation is a fair dose of unfamiliar, unsettling, and often challenging new circumstances every traveler must agily welcome if they are to thrive.  When you are served dinner with no cutlery in Kalkata, scooping sloppy curry with your hands has to do.  When you’re penniless and lose your companion, hours from home in Bangkok’s busy streets, you must ingratitate yourself to the kindness of strangers for bus fare to your hotel.  It strikes me that this same flexibility can serve us well as we navigate the unchartered territories of this new nation we all inhabit, called COVID.
Tumblr media
But what moves me most as I wander the world is the way in which constant new sensory input elevates my present-minded attention so intensely.  My ears delight in a particularly evocative call to prayer in Morocco.  My mouth savors the sour sweetness of a Colombian maracuya (passionfruit).  And my nose even appreciates the cow dung furnaces on the side of the road in India. It is like meditation in motion.  After each journey, when I return home, I set the earnest intention to sustain such sensory focus at home.  But as the days pass, this consistently becomes increasingly difficult.  However now, with little opportunity to venture much more than metres from our door, we need new strategies to remain sane and stimulated.  So, I think we can all benefit from living like tourists at home. I believe there is a science to this. I’ve even coined a term for it. It came from a time when I heard education expert Ken Robinson define the word aesthetics.  Associated with beauty, most think of the definition as subjective.  But he simplified this by pointing out that the opposite of aesthetics is anaesthetics (that which numbs our senses).  So, aesthetics are those things which make us feel.  Since this revelation, I have come to call myself an aesthesiologist because I believe that all artists are in the business of making people feel.  And this is why I feel that sharing artistic resources on this blog is the best medicine I can offer as we all ride out this crisis together.
So, maybe today you can consiciously pay attention to some subtle new observation each of your senses notice in your environment.  The way the light hits your tea kettle at dawn.  The call of a returning bird at spring time.  The crunch of the potato chips that you’re binging on right now.  Lately, I’ve certainly learned to feel extra fortunate that I can taste or smell at all, because my husband completely lost his sense of smell 3 weeks ago.  Most have probably heard that this is an alarming and bizarre potential sign of COVID, particularly in people with no other symptoms.  So, having come thru full incubation period, we’re at least past the scare that it could have become worse or that he might have infected myself or others with whom he’d had contact prior to quarantine.  But he never thought he’d look so forward to the day he could smell my farts again.  (Meanwhile, I’m indulging in all the beans and garlic I want)
At any rate, if home sensations don’t tickle you enough, there is always virtual travel.  And while that certainly risks inspiring a vicarious longing that may not serve you, for others, it can elicit some of the same wonders as adventures themselves.  So, if you’re craving sensory immersion into other worlds, New York Times can help you do this with their 13 recommended travel podcasts.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/09/travel/travel-podcasts.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage&contentCollection=AtHome
Tumblr media
I know I have certainly spent many days in quarantine wallowing over my screensaver trip photos, longing for a time when I could journey further afield once more.  But I have also been swept away by the photographic brilliance of some of the work that the New York Times is featuring weekly, in their World Through a Lens column.  Marcus Westerberg’s shots of Zambian wildlife (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/31/travel/zambia-safari.html) were particularly emotional for me, having just had one of the most meaningful travel experiences of my life there, last year, when I served as resident visiting artist at a music school in Lusaka.  In fact, I arrived exactly one year ago, today, and can’t wait to return to those magical people.  A girl has to dream, after all...

Creativity at Home
If any of you are variety-mongers like me, seeing only the same person or people, day in and day out, can have you dressing up your spouse in wigs or Hawaian skirts or bear costumes just to mix things up a bit.    But largely, I’ve been hearing that many parents and siblings are embracing ways to capitalize on their excessive togetherness. I think it’s why the show Survivor has been so successful all these years. Forced into small spaces and “tribes”, we tend to do whatever it takes to get along with our fellow captives.  Cooped up together for days on end, there is no limit to the clever activities some families have created to keep themselves occupied.
This crew took a simple tube and board of wood to create some exercise apparatus that has kept them busy for hours:  https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.5518064
Others are taking vicarious travel to the next level with some Photoshop fun - https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/07/travel/coronavirus-fake-travel.html
And the most impressive might be this 5-person brood, each with operatic quality voices, who belt out their rendition of One More Day, from Les Miserable.
https://www.bbc.com/news/av/uk-52106893/coronavirus-family-goes-viral-with-lockdown-les-mis-song-adaptation
Tumblr media
But, if you happen to be stumped for ideas yourselves, here are a few ways you can kickstart your family’s creativity.  A bunch of resourceful theatre company’s have been commissioning playwrights to create short Plays at Home, designed for actors and amateurs alike to perform in their own living rooms.  Most are staged for 1-7 humans, with joyful themes, and participants are welcome to share video recordings of their readings.

And right here in Vancouver, my friend Vanessa Richards is finding thoughtful ways to engage community in collaborative singing, by sustaining her weekly free choir sessions, now in Livestream, every Wednesday, from 6-7:30.  You can check out Van Van Song Society here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/togethersinging/

Quarantine Living - Al Yankovic style Some of you may be too young to recognize this reference to our favorite weasly moustached 80’s bard, who humorously bastardized everything from Queen’s Another One Rides the Bus to Michael Jakcson’s Eat It, with his own comic lyrics.  But lately, like our Les Miserable family, Weird Al Yancovic’s “wordsquatting” trend is spreading more virally than corona.
This original take on the Beatles, I gotta wash my hands is a classic.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxOJ7hh3H-I
Tumblr media
For more potty humor, I adore this Philipino artists’ no-toilet paper campaign, I love tabo- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vzb98tQp53I
And certainly, the most high tech example has come from Vancouver’s own Phoenix Chamber Choir, in their rendition of the hugely popular Queen song, Coronavirus Rhapsody- https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/1720158275935?fbclid=IwAR3gEdqv95oX4KT_W4F4_naJyASRhUaGpr-T56Aux9k4tCStGvow9xgHIQw

Reading Respite Endless screentime has probably left many of us fatigued and squinting, with a need for stronger reading glass prescriptions that we can’t fill, because all the optometry shops have shut down.  So, these next suggestions are offered with that caveat. However, for me, the tactile experience of a book in my hand can still be a nourishing antidote to digital overload. Often just a page is capable of transporting my body, mind and soul away from news feeds, virus counts, and press conferences.
Never a fan of e-readers, I have always passionately supported my local bookshops.  And thankfully, there is a current intiative intended to do the same, at a time when the threat of a certain Capital A behometh taking over global commerce is greater than ever.  So, you can actually feed your spirit and your neighborhood bookseller by purchasing any literary craving here. Thanks to the new site, bookshop.org, you can order what you’d like from the local bookstore of your choice, while this company acts as liason.  And the fair split allows your local vendor to keep 30% of total profit, when direct sales that are no longer possible for them may have only been slightly more (40-45%).
As far as what to stories to consume at a time like this, it has amazed me how much films like Contagion and Outbreak have had huge resurgences. This tells me that relevance and resonance are key factors in people’s entertainment choices.  However, if you’re looking for something that relates to your current circumstances, but leaves you not with more fear, but with actual hope, inspiration, or tools for survival, here are a few better options:
Tumblr media
Emily St. Mandel’s Station Eleven is, in fact, a post-apocalyptic tale.  But her narrative’s most clever survivors form a travelling Shakespeare troupe, demonstrating the power of art to heal in dire times.
For some existential musing reaped in self-isolation, Thoreau’s Life in the Woods always still provides.
And if the new stressors arising from this crisis find you busier than ever, but you long to slow down, travel journalist, Pico Iyer, in his prophetic 2014 book, The Art of Stillness, makes a strong case for the fact that “in our madly accelerating world, our lives are crowded, chaotic and noisy. So, there’s never been a greater need to slow down, tune out and give ourselves permission to be still.”

How Might We Fill This Space?
Never before have Memes, Tik tok or Cat Videos provided such many needed lifelines for people all over the world.  But the video that most stirred me to action was this stunning dance collaboration that popped up in my Facebook feed, during the early days of self-isolation, before my first Zoom conference, before I’d seen my first collaborative musical Quarantine Song spoof. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3pFxsYPLgU
This global initiative to weave together dance gestures, while performers were entirely physically separate, seeded the idea for a community art and writing project that I have recently started with a few friends.
In an effort to connect artists during this physically distant time, we have launched Spool of Thought.  And all artistic contributions are welcome to the thread.
https://www.instagram.com/spoolofthought2020/
On this page, we invite people to respond to the question, “How might we fill this space?”as we adjust to different rhythms of being. The idea is to weave together our thoughts, through the fluid form of cursive writing, in a non-linear narrative documenting this unique time on our planet.
The full instructions are below, for those interested and eager to participate:
1.Using Notes (iPhone) or Evernote (Android) and the digital pen, draw a continuous cursive line from the left to right side of the note (arranged horizontally) and write a word, phrase or sentence that responds to the prompt: How Might We Fill This Space?
2. Save it to your photos.
