just realised that the first media we consumed that made us REALLY sympathetic for the monster was that fucking point and click Mystery Case Files Ravenhearst game. bc that entire game i was legitimately fucking TERRIFIED of the ghost lady in that game but the second i found out her husband was abusive i doubled down on trying to help her escape. and the ending of that game Did make me cry out of fear but hey at least i did in fact help her escape
#i think that was the first game we ever like. completed. as well#NO it was hidden expedition amazon bc that one was less scary so it was easier to beat LMAO#we had both of those games on a single disc as a kid#one o those like. buy 2 for cheap game discs at like. best buy. i love those cheap bargain bin point and click games#hidden object games were my entire thing from the age of like. 8 to 12#we also had like. three ispy game discs one of which had FOUR separate worlds to go to#which upon my recent googling was like. multiple ispy games packaged into one which i cannot find any record of??#i know for a fact it had a space section the fantasy one and the school days one#and then we had treasure hunt and spooky mansion as separate discs#I FUCKING MISS SPOOKY MANSION i have a download of it but i CAN'T PLAY IT bc it was made for computers older than windows 7#it fucks up the aspect ratio of the screen and the mouse like. shows the cursor being about an inch to the left of where it Actually Is#its weird#anyway complete non sequitur here but I GOT THE STUPID ASS MULTIPLAYER ITEMS IN TERRARIA#i forgot i could just. make a multiplayer world. and not invite anyone to it. and get the items that way#so this can still be a purely singleplayer challenge i just have to click on a different menu to get these items#NOW I JUST HAVE TO FUCKING PAINTING HUNT. If you're looking for some indie novels to get you into the Halloween mood, let me recommend the works of my friend Ren Montgomery. She's self-published over on Amazon, and I want to get the word out for her three books.
Horror
Tumblr media
Haunt is a period piece set in the late 1970s. It tells the story of the Stewarts, a dysfunctional family who are looking for a fresh start in a brand new housing development, but the trauma they bring with them feeds into something sinister within the house itself. Pete is an abusive alcoholic, Mae is a lapsing fundamentalist at her wits' end, and their three young girls Kelly, Robin, and Lori are just trying to get through the new school year without slitting each others' throats.
Ren explores what it means to have faith when your views don't line up with what your Church dictates, and when those in power don't have your best interest at heart. Haunt is about the ties that bind a struggling family together, for better, or more often for worse, and the pain they face while trying to break the cycle of abuse. The presence which darkens the doorstep of the Stewarts' new haunt heightens their worst impulses and brings each and every one of them to their personal breaking point.
Haunt is both terrifying and gripping, and the 70s setting permeates every aspect of the plot; it doesn't feel like a modern story with a nostalgic 1970s coat of paint over it, it feels like something straight out of the dingy, smoke-filled, no-seatbelts-or-airbags era, an oft forgotten aspect of the decade that so many authors struggle to capture on page.
Contemporary fantasy

Monsters Are We is a story about burning bridges, both accidentally and on purpose. With some relationships, when the passion is gone, you can cut your losses and go your separate ways, but Penelope Draven doesn't have that option. Her old life with Leo the soul-sucking cheater needs to come to an end so her new life can begin.
She's danced this dance before, but this time around is going to be much more difficult for two very important reasons. First, she finally has something that makes her hesitate before throwing it all away, something she wants desperately to take with her when she goes; her teenage daughter, Clementine. Second, Leo knows what she is, what she's done, and what she's capable of, and he's not going to let either of them go so easily.
Ren explores the relationship between a mother and daughter from two very different generations, but who are more like one another than either realize. Monsters Are We is about figuring out who you are and choosing who you want to be. It's about being allowed to make irreparable mistakes so you can learn from them. The Draven girls find themselves on a road trip to hell and back which puts their lives and the lives of their closest friends into Leo's crosshairs. When they find themselves down on their luck, Penelope knows how to make her own, but it comes with a price.
Psychological thriller

Drawn to You is the story of the one that got away and one woman's twisted machinations to try and get it back. Ruby Deardon never got over her college crush, Sean Chaplin. They could have had something beautiful, Ruby tells herself, if only they had had anything at all. The timing was never right, the dominoes never fell the way she needed them to, so she lost her chance at her fairy tale happy ending.
Well, after nearly a decade of pining from a distance she decides to take matters into her own hands and insert herself back into Sean's life so they can finally have the life she's always wanted. He wants it too, she's sure of it, he just doesn't know it yet.
But just as she's about to zero in on Sean, she learns that Jeremy is zeroing in on her. She's was his one that got away, and while most women would be wary of his level of obsession, Ruby sees him as nothing but an obstacle standing between her and the future she's set her mind on. Jeremy is an unexpected dog in Ruby's game of cat and mouse, but cats have claws, and he has no idea what she's willing to do to make sure the mouse gets got.

✩🥀🧵Review:
A bewitching young adult romantasy that I couldn’t tear myself away from!
“Heartless Hunter” follows Rune Winters—a witch vigilante known as the Crimson Moth—as she courts Gideon Sharpe—a notorious and unforgiving witch hunter—to gain the intel she desperately needs to rescue her kind from being purged. Gideon loathes Rune, but when he learns she might be connected to the Crimson Moth, he pretends to court her right back. They are each other’s deadliest enemies, but what if they can’t help falling in love?
This was one of the easiest five star ratings I have ever given. It checked every box for me. Ciccarelli brilliantly crafts a captivating game of cat and mouse between witch and witch hunter, their intense chemistry slowly unfolding against the backdrop of a magical, regency era inspired world. The high stakes surrounding their situation only heightened the tension, leaving me completely enamored!
Rune is a crafty, selfless, and courageous fmc. She meets her match in Gideon, who is equally cunning and determined. His character is definitely more closed off at the start. I loved watching Rune get him to open up, thereby blurring the lines of the game they are playing with each other. Both characters are equally compelling and I enjoyed alternating between their perspectives. The short chapters really quicken the pace and further invested me in the story.
The romance in this book was everything I wanted it to be a more! Ciccarelli weaves all the best tropes—including fake dating and enemies-to-lovers—into her storyline. I am a huge fan of romantic gestures and this book has so many, all of which made my heart pound. The minimal spice hit just right for me as a person who gravitates more towards closed door romance! I would definitely categorize this book as upper ya.
I really enjoyed Ciccarelli’s world-building. It isn’t too dense and is modeled after the regency era, so I felt like I could orient myself fairly quickly. Her magic system is simple at the outset, but gets more complex as the story progresses.
The mystery subplot added another layer of intrigue that kept me hooked. Though I started to catch on closer to the end, some elements still caught me by surprise. I NEED to know what happens next and cannot wait to get my hands on “Rebel Witch” when it hits shelves!

TAG GAME TUESDAY!!
Thank you, as always, to the incomparable @celestialmickey for providing the Tuesday fun!
Thanks for the tag @gardenerian, @tanktopgallavich, @energievie, @deedala
And thanks @deedala for providing the easy copy & paste version of this for my silly mobile only using self
Name: Michelle
Age: Why do I have to stop and do the maths every single time?? Memory loss age, clearly!
Favourite Colour: Rainbow 🌈 (also anything in the berry family)
Beverage of Choice: Water, Chai Latte (hot or cold), Hot Chocolate, Dark Spiced Rum (attach suitable occasion to each at your own leisure)
Do you have push notifications turned on for tumblr? I have certain people and account on flag alerts. I have a lot of things on flag alerts. I live with constant FOMO.
Opinion on Fireworks? Pretty in theory. Practically a massive waste of money, bad for the environment, endanger and scare wildlife and pets, so it’s a no from me.
Favourite Childhood Toy? I had this stuffed mouse toy that had rainbow coloured ears and a music box inside it. When you pulled its tail all the way out it would play a song while slowly winding the tail back in. I loved it and thought the tail was so fun and I would wrap it around my arm and let it run over my arm as it wound back in. And then I’d put it around my leg and let it run over my leg as it wound back in. And then I wrapped the tail around my neck and nearly died… luckily my mother turned away from her phone call to check on me, finding me blue in the face and close to unconscious, and managed to get a pair of scissors and cut the tail just in time… so that’s that story lol
The store you shop at the most: I hate to say it but these days it’s Amazon. Urgh. I’m the worst.
Do you swear a lot? I feel like I’ve spent the last two days discussing the finer science behind swearing!! lol Yes and no? I use swear words in casual conversation, because English swearing doesn’t mean anything, since no one ever taught me those words are bad… but I don’t swear in anger.
Favourite Trope: Slooooooow burn. Especially for good reasons, not just hilarious high-jinx type misunderstandings.
An album with no skips: PULP - Different Class
If you could play any instrument, what would you choose? Fiddle. I love watch bands that have a fiddler, it’s the best!! I would also get a kick out of being really good at playing the spoons!!
Your biggest pet peeve: Oh, I have so many! Like, I love people, but I also really hate people, y’know? lol Getting to the bottom of an escalator and stopping!! In rush hour!!! With no regard to the pile up that’s about to happen behind you!!!!! Yeah, that’s a huge one. Get the duck out of the way people! Move to the side, then stop and chat!!
Favourite time of day: I’m naturally a morning person! But also the closer it gets to noon the more I start to think of the day as being ‘basically over’ and then I start to fret over all the things I was going to do today that I’ve now failed to achieve, and then I waste some time hating myself for sucking… did I mention that I’m very neurotic, also? 🤦
And finally, did you drink water today? Yeah. It’s summer time which means there are half full bottles of water in my freezer at all times, so I grab one in the morning, top it up with water all day long, and my water is always cool 😎
Also, I’m a water goblin. I hoard bottles of water in every room I ever spend time in. And then when I go to the kitchen to get myself or snack or something I think ‘Oh! Do I have water??’ And because I’m not sure I bring a pint of water just in case… to add to my other 5 pints of water already in the room LOL
It me 👇

@yapurplegirl The breakdown is here. Now.
Because I will break it down for you in this post.
Glossy and semi glossy surfaces are some of the toughest things to deal with in product photography.
And pure mirrored surfaces, well... those can ruin your day.
I think people thought I was using mirrors to do this effect (and sometimes mirrors are used to reflect light), but I meant the glasses had mirrored lenses. So I was basically taking a photo of two mirrors—which is a huge pain in the patoot.
And my double mirrors were curved, so they were reflecting nearly half of my studio.
Which is exactly why I chose them. I wanted to learn how to do it.
Photographing mirrors is most frustrating when they are directly reflecting into your camera lens. But we product photographers try to use angles when possible to avoid having to Photoshop our heads and cameras out of the shot (though sometimes that is unavoidable).
And if you can't shop yourself out of the mirror shot, then you have to get creative...
Tumblr media
If you aren't a product photographer and you need to take a picture of a mirror, people have come up with some fun solutions (as seen on r/peoplesellingmirrors )
You can try to be sneaky...
Tumblr media
You can try to be artistic...
Tumblr media
Ah! A ghost!
Tumblr media
Some will recruit their pets and kids...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And some will just say, "Fuck it."
Tumblr media
And then you have the Amazon solution, which is to just use Photoshop to create a blank "reflection."
Tumblr media
Or they hired a vampire. Not sure.
The product photographer solution for glossy/mirrored surfaces is to use "gradient lighting."
Tumblr media
You need to have a pretty solid understanding of light, including angles of incidence and angles of reflectance. And you are going to need some special equipment, but thankfully some of it you can DIY if you need to. And the bigger or more curvy the glossy surface, the more space you are going to need.
The basic idea comes down to creating an "image forming reflection" of your light source. Meaning you position your light source in such a way that it forms an actual image of itself on the glossy surface. And since we want to reflect a gradient onto our glossy surface, the first thing we need to do is create a light with a gradient.
First you need diffusion material. This is specially made plastic or paper that scatters light with a falloff when you shine through it.
A regular softbox tries to scatter light evenly. It wants the entire surface area to be outputting the same intensity of light.
Tumblr media
From corner to corner, the light is the same brightness. It is homogenous and creates a big single light source. Which is great for people and bad for glossy products.
So we need something where the light gradually falls off.
Most will build something called a "scrim" which is just special diffusion material stretched out over a rectangular frame.
The most popular diffusion material for this purpose is Savage Translum or Lee 216 White Diffusion. And if you are on a budget, you can also use tracing paper (usually two layers works best). You'll need to attach it to a homemade frame or hang it from a boom arm on a light stand.
Note: Not all diffusion material will create the needed effect. You need to make sure it is made for this purpose.
Once you have hung your scrim, you need to place your light in the proper position behind it.
Tumblr media
If you move the light close, you get a small sharp gradient.
Tumblr media
And if you move the light farther away, the gradient becomes larger and softer.
Tumblr media
And that is the "image" that you want to reflect onto your glossy item. You want that gradient to be infused with the surface of your object.
Just remember he still has all of his regular ambient lighting turned on so you can see things. In the final image you would only see the circle of light falling off into blackness.
There are two main gradients you might want to create—a ball or a tall strip.
For subjects that would most efficiently fit inside an imaginary sphere, you create a ball gradient.
Tumblr media
So jewelry, a gaming mouse, a disco ball. It's not a perfect rule of thumb, but I just imagine stuff inside a ball and if I feel like I could reflect a good gradient onto that ball, I use a ball gradient.
The ball is created with either a standard reflector on your light or you can even just use the strobe's "bare bulb."
Tumblr media
And if you are trying to do this on a budget, you can use a desk lamp or a flash. For the flash you will need one with a round head or you can buy a cheap "snoot" attachment.
Now if you are shooting a glossy surface that would fit better into an imaginary cylinder, you would use something like a strip softbox behind the diffusion material.
Tumblr media
The idea is to make a vertical gradient that is taller than the subject you are shooting. So the image created on your glossy surface looks more like this.
Tumblr media
And when all of the ambient light is cut out of the final photo, the vertical gradient will look something like this.
Tumblr media
And that is useful for tall or cylindrical things like bottles and jars where it can wrap around the sides and span the entire length of the subject from top to bottom.
This is a Fitz's bottle I shot...
Tumblr media
And some of my hair gel that I never use...
Tumblr media
I put a strip softbox shining through diffusion on either side and the gradients wrapped around.
So, I'm afraid I am about to disappoint some of you.
Because my original sunglasses photo did not look like my original post.
I wanted to play with an 80s color pallette so I changed some of the colors.
Tumblr media
It was not purple and blue originally.
No, that doesn't make it fake and I didn't trick you. I did nothing that could not be achieved in real life.
I could easily get sunglasses with blue lenses and some magenta card and create that exact image.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And if anyone is still not convinced, I will recreate my 80s version all in-camera once I get my studio set up.
Actually, that sounds like fun.
Second, sunglasses cannot actually float in mid-air, so I did have to attach them to a bendy arm and paint that out.
Tumblr media
*gasp*
I hope you can forgive my subterfuge.
There seems to be this notion that using Photoshop is cheating or less authentic. And people also seem to be saying my photo looks like a render and thus "fake." But this style of gradient lighting has been around long before Photoshop and CGI. So if anything, CGI looks like product photography, not the other way around.
I promise that is the extent of my Photoshop trickery and everything else was done practically. Okay?
I decided the best gradient for the glasses was a ball. But getting everything in position was very tedious. I moved things a millimeter at a time until they lined up perfectly. That took a frustratingly long time because the lenses reflected a very wide field of view. Which meant using a very large piece of diffusion material that was very close to the glasses. My old studio was tiny so I was in very tight circumstances and my belly kept bumping things and I'd have to start over.
My ball gradient essentially created an image of itself in the lenses about like this...
Tumblr media
I placed it so it would reflect in both lenses.
So... to review.
Let me try to break this down in the simplest way possible.
If you wanted to take a picture of a flat mirror. And in that mirror you wanted to reflect an image of Spider-Man holding a pug in a baby bjorn.
The simplest thing to do is put Spider-Man holding a pug in a baby bjorn in front of that mirror.
Tumblr media
And if you wanted a ball gradient to reflect in that mirror instead of Spider-Man holding a pug in a baby bjorn, then you'd just hang a sheet of diffusion, stick a light behind it, and Bob's your uncle...
Tumblr media
(At this angle you would need to cut a hole in the diffusion material and stick a lens through and then clone it out later.)
What I'm doing is no different.
The tricky part is when you have to do this on things that are irregular shapes. Getting all of the angles right takes a lot of trial and error and practice.
Sometimes you have to build giant scrims and mount them in very awkward positions.
Tumblr media
And sometimes, you need to use 3 or 4 scrims at the same time.
It's a lot of very precise work and I think that is why I enjoy it so much. You get amazing results and it isn't something just anyone can to do. It is a skill you have to develop over time.
That is my breakdown.
I hope it was interesting.
And I hope to be shooting some more cool stuff soon. My new studio is coming along. I'm really hoping within the next month or so.
Tumblr media
1980s Aviators
Taking a photo of something with two mirrors is not easy. And this was my first success at shooting a mirrored subject like this. And then the 80s color palette is just for vibes.

The web has been abuzz with excitement this week as fans were treated to their first true look at the long anticipated comeback of Ben Affleck's calculating and lethal alter ego, Christian Wolff, in The Accountant 2. Fans were itching to learn how the follow-up to the 2016 thriller would pan out, and now they finally can. Amazon and Warner Bros. have finally released the first full-length trailer, giving an exciting preview of what's to come. The movie is the comeback of director Gavin O'Connor, as well as screenwriter Bill Dubuque, who wrote the original film's intense story. The trailer features Affleck with Jon Bernthal, reprising his role as Christian's brother, Brax. With the figures counted, this sequel seems to be in the process of bringing an action-filled experience, upping the stakes by a lot. Gage Skidmore from Peoria, AZ, United States of America, CC BY-SA 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons For fans of the original movie, this trailer promises what everyone has been clamoring for. Christian Wolff is back, as mysterious and calculating as before. A big twist is revealed—J.K. Simmons' character, Treasury agent Ray King, is murdered, and a cryptic message is written on his arm: "Find the accountant." This leads to a high-octane mission where Christian and Brax are reunited. The pair sets out on a determined quest for the truth, with the help of Treasury Agent Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), who helps guide them through the treacherous journey that lies before them. The movie draws heavily on the hallmarks of what made the original succeed—accuracy-driven fight choreography, psychologically intense tension, and an assassin lead that walks the thin line between killer efficiency and adamant moral conviction. The trailer is a preview of the chemistry between Christian and Brax, imbuing the action with an added emotional gravity. Their relationship is rife with unresolved tensions and prior trauma as it plays against the background of high-level money politics and harsh fight scenes. Where the first film delved into Christian's singular perspective on life—his mathematical brilliance and his calculating, almost robotic method of doing violence—this sequel doubles down on that formula, with increased violence and deeper personal investment. It's a thinking person's thriller and a rollercoaster ride of adrenaline-fueled action that made the first film a sleeper success when it became available on streaming services. The official synopsis also gives more details about the movie's plot: "When her old boss is murdered by unseen assassins, Treasury Agent Marybeth Medina (Addai-Robinson) is compelled to call on Christian Wolff (Affleck) to crack the homicide. With his estranged but extremely deadly brother Brax (Bernthal), Chris uses his genius-level mind and less-than-legal strategies to reconstruct the unsolved equation. As they close in on the truth, the trio catch the attention of some of the deadliest killers alive — all of whom are determined to shut down their investigation." This set-up promises an intense cat-and-mouse game, with Christian's unmatched brilliance contrasted against powerful enemies. It's not merely about cracking a case; it's about staying alive in a world where even the best agents are fair game. Blending high-octane action and psychological depth guarantees that this sequel will appeal to fans of the first installment while enticing new readers who enjoy high-stakes thrill rides. The most interesting thing about the trailer is the tone, which is distinctly dark humor set against tightly choreographed action. Christian's deadpan, machine-like delivery creates a contrast between him and the mayhem all around him, and it's an interesting thing to watch. The rapport between Affleck and Bernthal continues to be just as charged, with their sibling relationship bringing added depth to the narrative. Though their relationship is founded on violence and survival, there's a subtext of redemption and reconciliation that gives emotional depth to their journey. Visually, the movie continues with the sleek, high-contrast look that characterized its prequel. The action scenes are well-choreographed, prioritizing precision over sheer spectacle. Every step, every cut, and every choice feels deliberate, echoing the calculating attitude of its protagonist. From graphic hand-to-hand combat to car chases, the movie will have spectators at the edge of their seats. The release of the sequel is timely, as audiences are hungry for smart action movies that are both exciting and meaningful. The Accountant 2 appears to be delivering on both counts. O'Connor's direction keeps the story grounded while embracing the high-octane thrills that audiences expect from a movie of this quality. With its April 25 release date, the question is still out there—can The Accountant 2 live up to or even exceed its original? The original film's success was based largely on word of mouth and its strong performance on streaming sites following a small theatrical run. This time, however, expectations are higher, and the movie has the potential to make a big niche for itself at the box office. Whether it's a blockbuster success or a cult classic, The Accountant 2 is looking to be a thrilling ride packed with hard-hitting action, smart storytelling, and a lead character who continues to be one of the most intriguing figures in contemporary action films. Fans won't have to wait much longer to find out how the math adds up when the film finally opens in theaters. Read the full article

Haunting Adeline By H.D. Carlton
My thoughts
Haunting Adeline is a very controversial book that is either loved or hated.
So let's talk about it. Quick disclaimer I do not mean to offend or make fun of anyone or their opinions. I genuinely love reading and talking about books and would like to talk about this one with you all. This book however is very dark in nature and covers some very dark things that would disturb anyone. Especially those who have gone through or seen similar things. I will list the trigger warnings from the official website and link it as well so you can fact check me if you so choose.
Child sex trafficking
Rape
Sexual Assault
Dubious consent scenarios
Blood and gore depiction
Murder
Torture
Kidnapping
Stalking
the trigger list
(This one isn’t listed but there is also a scene where a gun is used inappropriately against someone's will)
As you can see this book has some very sensitive and taboo topics and it will be damn near impossible to talk about it without offending someone but I will try my absolute best. I apologize in advance for anything I say that seems insensitive. I do not mean to upset anyone. I just want to share my thoughts and opinions on this book. Please proceed with caution and remember your mental health matters.
Haunting Adeline is the first book in the “Cat and Mouse” duet and was published in 2021. A fitting name for a book about stalking and hunting the girl who is perceived as prey in his twisted game. Obviously the big hulking scarred man with a god complex is the cat who stalks through the night to hunt and claim his prey. Its sounds fucked up because it is. It's supposed to be. Haunting Adeline is listed as a horror dark romance. It was intended for adults with darker tastes when it comes to fictional romance.
H.D. Carlton has said that she recommends that the readers be older than 18 before reading as it covers some dark topics. I do think that suppliers should make it harder for minors to find and read inappropriate material.  That, however, is very unlikely as it is not up to amazon and walmart to make sure the children don’t go behind their parents backs and read things not meant for their eyes. Just like it is not the authors of adult books to parent your kids. I strongly suggest the parents pay attention and look into what their kids are reading. A goodreads account is free and would help the parents find all the necessary information needed to protect their child's innocence.
For context reasons here is what you would find on the back of the book along with a summary of what happens throughout the book. Here is your spoiler warning.
The Manipulator
I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me.
I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh.
But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave.
He's always there, watching and waiting.
And I can never look away.
Not when I want him to come closer.
The Shadow
I didn't mean to fall in love.
But now that I have, I can't stay away.
I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves.
The way she undresses...
I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine.
And once she is, I'll never let her go.
Not even when she begs me to.
The book begins with Adeline moving into her grandmother's house that was left to her in the will. Adeline’s mother disapproves of this and tries to talk her out of this. Adeline does not have a good relationship with her mother and decides to disregard her wishes and stay there anyway. Adeline was very close to her grandmother and misses her a lot. This house is an uncomfy reminder of things lost and also a safe haven. Adeline is an author and worked mostly abroad and this house is the only place that felt like home to her.
As Adeline settles into living in Parsons manor she decides to get drinks with her best friend Daya.
Daya sets her up with an acquaintance named Grayson to hookup. Adeline doesn't like Grayson at all but decides to go through with it as it apparently has been awhile. However back at Parsons Manor, Grayson and Adeline are suddenly interrupted by a loud and sudden banging at the door right before they could “do the deed.” After investigating and finding nothing, Adeline calls it off as she is thoroughly spooked and no longer in the mood. Grayson throws a tantrum punching his fist through the wall and leaving in nothing but a singler sock all while cursing out Adeline. While inspecting the new hole in the wall Adeline discovered some diaries from her great grandmother, Gigi.
We then learn that our stalker is a man named Zade.
Zade is a vigilante of sorts who hunts down sex traffickers and pedophiles to torture and kill them after rescuing the women and children. He also happens to be a super famous hacker and the head of an organization called “Z.” He saw Adeline at a book signing and fell in love at first sight. He then proceeded to use his unique set of skills to effectively learn everything about her and continue to stalk her. When finds out about Grayson he gets really jealous and bangs on the door. We later learn that he kidnapped Grayson, cut out his tongue and threatened him into never contacting Adeline again. He makes a habit leaving her roses with the thorns cut off in and around the house effectively scaring the crap out of her. As well as leaving cryptic notes like “I’ll be seeing you soon little mouse.” and standing outside her window smoking in the middle of the night.
Adeline has Daya help her set up security cameras around her house and files a few police reports.
After reading Gigi's diaries she learns that Gigi had a stalker that she fell in love with. Her mom stops by and as a last ditch effort to talk her out of living in that house she informs Adeline that Gigi had been murdered in her own bed while living here. Adelive still refuses to move and decides that she will solve the 75 year cold case of Gigi’s murder.
Adeline and Daya go out one night to a club meeting some attractive wealthy men. Adeline gets texts from an unknown phone number warning her not to let anyone touch her or she would get their hands delivered to her in her mailbox the next morning. Adeline ignores this and goes home with one of the men. Zade bangs on the door interrupting once again. The man Adeline brought home goes outside to investigate and is never seen again. Adeline calls the police and finds out that all of her police reports are missing and are not in the system. She also finds out that the man she brought home is from a well known crime family. She finds his hands on her doorstep the next day and does not call the cops because she was told that if anyone knew she was connected to him then she would be targeted by his family and friends. She instead hides his hands and denies knowing anything when his friends question her and Daya later in the book.
Zade later breaks in and plays “hide and seek” with her.
The catch is that if he catches her he fucks her. He catches her. She says no. He inserts his gun into her kitty cat against her will. She doesn't like it at first and then gives in later. She then feels really guilty and full of shame after it happened.
(I will further elaborate later)
Time goes on and instances like this continue to happen throughout the book and they grow closer as she gets more accepting of Zade and what he does. They work together to follow their own cases and grow together as a couple. Near the end Adeline accepts and trusts Zade and also finds out the truth behind Gigi’s murder. Zade leaves to wrap up his case when something goes wrong and he finds out that he had been betrayed. During this time Adeline is kidnapped leaving us with this cliffhanger into the next book.
Let me start by sharing some things about myself. One, I love dark romance books. It is not the only genre I read but I do enjoy reading it nonetheless. Two, I personally like this book but I can see the issues with it and would not recommend it to anyone unless I KNEW they would like it. Three, I personally have not had the misfortune of living through some of these things but I watched my step father abuse my mother in every way imaginable for 14 years. That last fact is relevant because I have seen first hand how this type of love can destroy someone and break them down until it's all they know. My mother is no longer with that vile man and my siblings and I are all safe. She is in therapy and I am proud of her progress.
First let's talk about Stockholm syndrome. Stockholm syndrome is a coping mechanism to a captive or abusive situation. People develop positive feelings toward their captors or abusers over time. I watched this happen to my mother and I thoroughly believe that is what happened to Adeline. After what happened with the gun Adeline felt guilt and shame. She continues to feel this after every time they have intercourse. She slowly starts to accept it and how it makes her feel over time. Before she accepts it she feels shame and as if there is no other option than to accept him. She felt as if there was no choice and no one would be able to help her get away from him.
Second, let's talk about the effect these books have on the people who read them.
I think these books help the people who read them. It helps them overcome and accept the things that happened to them as it gives them the strength to move forward with their lives because now they don't feel so alone in their suffering. I also know that this is not the case for everyone. To some people these books hit a little close to home and trigger ptsd and panic attacks. To those people it hurts them to think that there are people who could be romanticizing their trauma. As though what they went through wasn’t life changing and requiring years of therapy to get even close to recovering. I do not believe that it was the Author's intent to make those people feel that way. I think she meant it to help the first group of people feel seen. And for many it has. I do however think that she should've done more research before writing this book as I don”t think dub-con means what she thinks it means
DUb-con is a fanfiction term that refers to sex that is not explicitly consented to, but is wanted by both parties.
A fanfiction term ONLY. Sex that is not explicitly consented to in real life is just RAPE. Anyone with an AO3 account knows what it is and has decided if they like it or not. I first read this when I was 17. To clarify, my mom had no idea. I snuck it behind her back because I was curious after hearing about the infamous “gun scene” off of tik tok and decided to read it. At the time I thought it was hot. Not something I would have liked to be a part of in real life, but in that little paper world it seemed like since they got together in the end it was fine. After rereading as an adult my view on that scene has changed as I know more about dub-con in general. Dub-con is an abbreviation for “dubious consent.” As in you were not really sure if she consented or not. It’s along the same lines as cnc, just slightly different. She said no. She said no multiple times. There was no doubt. That scene romanticised rape 100%. Reading that scene makes me sick. I have read another one of her books and from what I remember everything was consensual. I don’t think she did enough research, but I also don’t think she meant to cause harm. I’m not excusing it, just asking that people understand that it was a stupid mistake and let her learn from it.
I do like this book. I don’t like certain aspects to it, but I do like it. I enjoyed the overall story. Adeline is funny and witty, and Zade thinks he's batman. Before I piss people off I would like to remind people that Game of Thrones exists. Game of Thrones has far worse stuff in it and has a much larger audience. It made it on screen and everytime it releases a new season everyone freaks out and gets excited. That doesn’t mean the people who read or watch it condone or promote sibling romance and rape. Before that there was 50 Shades of Gray. Also fucked up and morally wrong, but it has an audience. Haunting Adeline is meant for a very targeted audience and it’s ok if you don’t like it. It’s also ok if you do like it. Just please do some research before you read anything and don’t go around shitting on people on the internet because they like something you don’t. If they are not actually gonna cause harm, leave them be and read your own books.
Happy reading, and remember your mental health matters.

Cupid's Shot by Serena Pier is now live!
Since when does Aaron Olson have abs like that? I haven't seen him since high school, but now I find myself desperate to see much more of him.
Sarah Anderson's plan for the Cupid's Crush event at the local bar, High Five, is straightforward: enjoy some playful banter and score a free drink. After a decade on the West Coast, Sarah's still adjusting to life back in her small Wisconsin hometown, surrounded by familiar faces--until one of them completely catches her off guard. Aaron Olson, the once scrawny high school wrestler, is now tending bar shirtless with fluffy angel wings strapped to his back, revealing a physique that is distracting in the best way.
What starts as light-hearted banter turns into a flirtatious game of cat and mouse, where Sarah learns that you shouldn't judge someone by who they were in high school--because they might just surprise you in the most irresistible ways.
In this flirty and steamy Valentine's themed novella, discover the thrill of seeing an old friend in a whole new light, and watch sparks fly as past perceptions are shattered and new attractions take hold.
(This is Book #2 in an interconnected series. It is encouraged, but not essential, to read Santa's Coming before reading Cupid's Shot.)

Dolo Flicks: Strange Darling Review and Initial Thoughts: JT Mollner Delivers an Immersive Horror Thriller Experience

Published: August 26, 2024
I wish I could say more about STRANGE DARLING, but it's one of those films that's too clever to spoil, so best to say nothing.
— Stephen King (@StephenKing) July 31, 2024
Only a handful of films can captivate and immediately engage an audience. It's a delicate balance of narrative and style. Strange Darling, with its unique nonlinear structure presented in six chapters and an epilogue, emerges as the standout horror thriller of 2024.
In his second directorial film, JT Mollner tells the story of a serial killer in the final encounter of their life. Exposition into the characters' backgrounds is minimal, keeping the plot focused on just one event. Strange Darling stars Willa Fitzgerald as the Lady, Kyle Garner as the Demon, Barbara Hershey, Ed Begley, Madison Beaty, and Steven Michael Quezada.
The film's storytelling is as unique as its structure, with out-of-order chapters that immediately plunge the viewer into a gripping cat-and-mouse game. As each chapter unfolds, the story gradually reveals more about the plot. Strange Darling skillfully manipulates societal norms and assumed gender roles to lead the audience into believing one character is the victim and the other the perpetrator.
The two leads, Fitzgerald and Garner, shoulder the film's weight with their stellar performances. Their scenes are among the film's most memorable, both in terms of the writing and cinematography. Giovanni Ribisi, known for his roles in Sneaky Pete and Ted, served as the film's cinematographer, shooting the entire project on 35mm film.
Over the last few years, Garner has shed the gothic introvert typecasting that enveloped the first half of his career. He now takes on the role of menacing characters who take deliberate actions, choosing scripts that give him nuance and not falling into another action-star or villain stereotype. Fitzgerald is best known for television shows such as Amazon Prime's Reacher and Netflix's The Fall of the House of Usher. Strange Darling is her breakout performance as she steals the show. Once the film's twist or subversion is revealed, it provides more context to the previous chapters, adding a new layer to what the viewer has witnessed.
Mollner's script has an intensity from the start, but knowing when to slow down and pick things back up is where it shines. While the Lady and the Demon are the prominent figures in Strange Darling, some characters featured are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, adding to the sheer insanity of the film's events. Genevieve (Barbara Hershey) and Frederick (Ed Begley Jr.), a couple enjoying an intriguing and odd Sunday breakfast, live in a home near where the Lady is attempting to escape. Through no fault of their own, they become victims of the main characters' actions. The addition of these characters may have been influenced by Mollner's background as an avid reader of Stephen King's stories, which featured antagonists and those along the unfortunate ride of their story.
"Even though I was way too young, the first novel I read was Carrie, and it took me months and months to get through it," Mollner told Forbes. "In second grade, I got sent to the principal's office for reading it, and when they called my mom, she said, 'Hey, I'm not going to discourage my kid from reading!
"Because I couldn't watch horror movies, I'd still see the covers for them at the video store, and my brain started creating things that were far worse and far more theatrical than you would ever see in the movies. That must have something that had a little bit to do with the imagination I ended up with. Since then, when stories come to me, I have to write them and have to make them."
2024 has been a mixed year for horror. There have been prequels that over-achieved, such as The First Omen, trilogies concluding with MaXXXine, genius marketing and word of mouth with Longlegs, and your standard studio low-tier horror with Imaginary and Night Swim. Strange Darling sets itself apart even from the best of the year with its story and characters keeping you engaged from start to finish. As word of mouth travels, Strange Darling will earn recognition for being one of the truly unique experiences of 2024 that delivers in terms of story, character, and execution.
