Danny F. Long

Danny F. Long, 75, of Carpenter Road, Harvey’s Lake, died on July 2, 2024, at his home.

Dan was born in Kingston and was the son of the late Fred and Pauline Franklin Long. He graduated from Northwest Area H.S. in 1967. After graduation he attended Drexel University.

He enjoyed sharing his children and grandchildren’s accomplishments including; sailing, service, education, flying, cooking, smoking meats, sports, gaming, art, dance, travel, technology, and home improvement (which he happily assisted). Spending time with and helping family was always a priority.

Dan was a very handy man and avid tinkerer, fixing everything around the house and yard (even if it wasn’t broken). He was very proud of the 3-D electric deer fence he installed around their property to keep critters out of his wife’s lovely flower gardens. He was Evelyn’s biggest fan. Everything in and around the house was created by him, for her. Every songbird, hummingbird, squirrel, and chipmunk found treats at his custom-made animal feeders. He enjoyed the occasional visits of the local bears to the yard and laughed as he repaired the damage they caused to his eclectic collection of bird feeders.

Dan enjoyed Garden Railroading and riding steam trains; many of his photos were published in Garden Railroad Magazine. Dan was a cowboy at heart, his moniker was “RR Dawg.” He loved shooting his own self-loaded black powder ammunition and dressing in authentic Old West costumes for shoots. He loved listening to Roger Miller. Dan enjoyed hunting with extended family and organic gardening. He provided home-grown produce, canned vegetables from his gardens, and fresh game to his family for many years. He was a loyal fan of Strawberry Jam Duo, and until recently, could be found “Every Thursday night, 6-9, rain or shine” at The Grotto listening to them. He loved his many dogs over the years, especially Cleo, Lucy, and Gusto. He bred and raised Portuguese Water Dogs for a number of years.

In March of 1969, Dan was drafted and trained for combat at Fort Dix, New Jersey. In September of 1969, he flew out of Fort Lewis Washington Processing Center for arrival in Vietnam. He was assigned to the Army Americal Division and sent to Alpha Company, 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment at LZ Gator. He was assigned bunker duty and shipped to the field where he learned to work with explosives. On May 8, 1970, he was wounded in an ambush. Despite being severely wounded, he held his position, suppressed enemy fire, and subdued the enemy with precision until reinforcements arrived. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Army Commendation Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1970 at the rank of Sergeant.

Before he was drafted for service in Vietnam, Dan worked at Berwick Shell Plant making 8” artillery shells. After leaving the Army, he worked in home construction and logging. When injury forced an exit from forestry, he joined the Department of Corrections, Dallas where he retired after 23 years as Sergeant.

He was a member of the Harvey’s Lake American Legion, Post 967, Harvey’s Lake Rod and Gun Club, Americal Division Veterans Association, and a proud lifetime member of the NRA. He was a former Boy Scout Leader with Troops 17, 1 and 3. He was also a member of PSCOA and SASS. He was the recipient of a Quilt of Honor pieced by Jennie Valick-Kopacz and quilted by Diane Levandoski.

Dan is survived by his children, Daniel, Carl, and Susan Long (Rob), Lindsey Valentine (Alex), Alexis Smith (Justin) and Courtney Smith. His grandchildren Alexia Long, Kathryn and Liam Valentine. Siblings Cindy Jennings and Drew Long (Susan). Nephews Nicholas and Steven Long. Former wife Kay and brother in law Tom Andreas. Cousins Richard Long (Elre), Bonnie Evans (Barry) and Eric Long (Joan). Best friend and co-conspirator Dave Jumper and his wife Lisa who was like a sister to Dan. His beloved dachshund, Finnegan. He lived at Harvey’s Lake with his wife and love of his life, Evelyn Sgarlat Smith.

As someone who suffered from the impacts of combat on his mind and body, Dan sought to help other veterans receive their due benefits. He guided many veterans through the complicated paperwork of Compensation, Pension and Disability. He often quoted “You don’t stop fighting for your rights until the day you die.” Part of his legacy of helping other veterans suffering from PTSD included donating his brain for study to the Department of Veterans Affairs Biorepository Brain Bank. Dan was also a lifelong blood and plasma donor to the American Red Cross.

A private graveside service with Military Honors will be held at Fern Knoll Burial Park, Dallas.

Ronald Ellis Canada (born May 3, 1949) is an actor with a specialty in portraying judges and detectives. He is known for One on One, The Shield, and Lone Star.

Following completion of the Michele Clark broadcast journalism program at Columbia University, he began his career as a television news reporter in 1971 at WBAL-TV. In 1974, he began his three-year tenure at WJLA-TV in DC. He was nominated twice for Regional Emmy Awards, receiving the award in 1977. The following year he received an AP Award for Outstanding Reporting.

He began his acting career in 1978. While making the career transition he worked part-time as a broadcaster for The Voice of America. He studied acting at The Folger Theatre Group. He moved to New York in 1985. He became the second actor to play the role of Troy Maxson in Fences at The GeVa Theatre in Rochester.

He has had a long career in both television and film, known for his work in Cinderella Man, Wedding Crashers, and his recurring role as Under Secretary of State Ted Barrow on The West Wing. In 1996, he received the Dallas Film Critics Award and significant national attention for his performance as “Otis Payne” in Lone Star.

He played the role of Iago in a “photo negative” version of Othello at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in D.C. The moon shone its dull glow on the earth as it was nearing its peak height, filling the dark places between street lamps down the stretch of road. Dally was walking ahead of her, close enough to protect her if something happened, but not close enough to have any sort of physical contact. He was angry, as was she. They were both having a good time at the Curtis house. The gang all gathered together as they did every so often, mostly playing cards or just simply enjoying the company of one another while the tv filled the background behind their conversations. This particular night, things ended up going sour. It was petty. Something not even worth getting angry about. Steve had gotten just a little bit too close to (y/n), and Dally lost it. His anger was dull in the beginning, taking small shots at her here and there, but when she started firing back harder, that’s when he got even more angry. He left promptly after a screaming match, slamming the screen door behind him. She hurried after him because, for one she was mortified that she and Dally just had a huge, heated argument in front of every one. And two, Dally got out of control when his anger took over. She didn’t want him getting into any trouble. Now here they were, walking down the sidewalk not saying a word to one another. “I’m takin’ you home.” Her heart lurched. That was different. He’d usually offer to let her sleep at Bucks. They’d make up and everything would be okay. It was a cycle, a vicious one, but everything would always be okay in the end. This time was different though. “Okay.” She said quietly. He noticed her change in tone but didn’t say anything. They remained silent for the rest of the walk to her house. She was too caught up in her own thoughts. The relationship had been going downhill for some time now. He’d been less attentive, more aloof. She found she was fighting to get his attention sometimes. She was also tired of the constant arguing and bickering between them. It was quite frequent, too frequent to be healthy. He was wearing her down, and maybe it was time to cut him loose.It hurt her to think about it, but maybe it was in both of their best interests. It was weighing both of them down and it didn’t seem to be progressing in any positive direction. They finally approached her house. Dally stopped beside the gate as she went to open it. She slowly swung it open and walked inside. Dally began to walk away without saying anything, but she stopped him. “Dal, wait.” He stopped and turned around, his hands stuffed in his jacket pockets as he tried to look as nonchalant as possible. “What.” She sighed deeply before looking him in the eyes. “I can’t do this anymore.” His expression changed as the words fell from her mouth. “The arguing, the anger, it’s just too much for me now.” Tears brimmed her eyes as she tried her hardest not to cry. Dally didn’t say anything, he just stood there looking everywhere but her. A tear escaped from her eye and rolled down her face. She quickly wiped it up before speaking. “You ain’t gonna say anything?” He wiped his mouth before talking. He looked irritated. “Yeah. You’re right. I’ll see you around.” He turned on his heels and started down the sidewalk again. She watched him walk away, escaping into the darkness. She turned around and sulked to her house. As she placed her hand on the doorknob, she heard Dally shout loudly before hearing smashing sound, followed by a car alarm. She quickly went into her house and went right to bed, wondering if she made the right decision. A few weeks had gone by and she was feeling much better. She was spending more time doing the things she loved, hanging out with friends and picking up some hobbies she had forgotten about. And she was happy. But a part of her missed him. She felt that they could have worked it out, and feelings of remorse crowded her mind whenever she thought about it. Maybe she had made the wrong decision. They didn’t even discuss it, he just left angrily. But then that’s when her mind went the opposite direction. He just left without saying anything. No discussion, no apology. He just walked away in a fit of rage. It was disheartening, and it was why a part of her thought she made the right decision. She and Pony decided to hang out that day. It was too nice to stay inside. The sun was shining brightly in the sky. Only a few white clouds lingered and the slight breeze that came every so often was just enough to cool them down from the Oaklahoma heat. They had walked around the neighbourhood and ended up at the park, laying down in the grass while they were discussing books they had just finished reading. Pony had just finished beaming about his most recent reading adventure when there was a sudden silence between the two of them. “Can I tell ya somethin’ (y/n)?” Pony said, changing his tone. “Yeah, what’s up?” She asked nervously, wondering what his question could have been. He sat up and crossed his legs, keeping them close to his chest with his arms wrapped around. “Dally misses you. A lot.” He looked back down at her, but she sat up beside him. We haven’t heard from you in a while but we see Dal almost everyday.” “I miss you guys.” She sighed, ripping bits of grass from the ground and letting them fly out of her hands into the breeze. Pony stood up and held his hand out to her. “C’mon.” He said. She grasped his hand and he helped her up. “Let’s to back to my house, I’m sure everyone will be happy to see you.” He started off towards his house “What if Dally’s there?” She asked, following close behind. “I don’t think he will be. But if he is, who cares? Everyone there is still friends with you.” He said reassuringly. It eased her a bit but she was still worried. She didn’t want to see him, because if she did, all the old feelings would erupt back out of her heart, and she didn’t want that. They arrived at the Curtis house. The noise of the tv could be heard from the porch. Pony opened the door and and to her surprise only two of the boys were there. Two-bit was on the floor, Johnny was on the couch. They were watching Mickey Mouse cartoons. Pony walked in, (y/n) followed after. “Hey Pony, we was wonderin’ where you were.” Johnny said. “Hey, (y/n).” He said after. “Hi, Johnny.” She smiled. “Two-bit?” Pony questioned forcefully. “Oh, yeah, hi.” Two-bit replied, not taking his eyes away from the screen. “You invite yourself into our house, least you could do is greet us when we come home. She was still trying to wriggle out of his grasp as they continued walking. He stopped when he figured they were far enough away from the boys that they wouldn’t be able to hear them. Dally let go of her arm. She pushed him, but he barely moved an inch. “Dallas Winston, don’t you ever grab me like that again! You hear me?” She threatened. He laughed in response. “Why are you laughing?” “I know you ain’t mad at me.” She stopped immediately at those words. Dally was right, but she wouldn’t give him the satisfaction. “I am. Now leave me alone. I don’t wanna see you anymore.” He took a step closer, ignoring her request. “Dally, don’t.” She put a hand on his chest to keep him away. She faltered a bit when she felt how solid he was under her hand, but she wouldn’t let herself become weak by affection to him anymore. But he kept inching closer, and her emotions were knocking at the wall she had put up and barricaded, which was about to completely crumble at any second. She gasped slightly when she was halted by the tall wooden fence behind her. There was nowhere else for her to go. He put his hands beside her head and lowered himself to meet her eyes. There was something different about him, he didn’t seem as cold. He looked at her with remorse, his blue eyes radiating the emotion to her clearly. “I’m sorry, (Y/N). I ain’t been treatin’ you right.” The words rolled off his tongue like honey, and that was the final blow. The wall crumbled. Emotion flooded over her and she wanted to cry, tears of relief, but she stopped herself as he continued talking. “I promise, it’ll be different now. I ain’t gonna do no wrong to you no more. Ever.” He stood up straight, reaching into his jacket pocket. “I’d been saving up to buy you this.” He held up a small gold ring with a small ruby decorated in the centre. It glittered beautifully in the light. “Dal,” she said, He gently grabbed her hand and slipped the ring on. “W-why?” She looked up at him. Dally was a different man. He was being kinder to her, kinder than he’d ever been before. “Well, I’d been plannin’ to give it to you before, but we got into that big fight so I couldn’t. But I still wanted you to have it.” She gazed back at her hand, unsure of what to say. Dally sighed. “Listen, if this don’t change anything it’s fine. I just thought I should apologize for everythin’.” “Why did you just walk away that night?” She asked abruptly. “I was angry.” He said. “Man, I love you, (y/n). I never felt this way ‘bout anyone before. I was angry you just wanted to give up.” “Dal,” she began. “The constant arguing and fighting was taking a huge toll on me. I wasn’t happy anymore. We never talked about it either, just swept it under the rug and acted like it never happened, until it happened again.” she explained. “What changed, Dal?” “I dunno,” He said, his guard starting to build up again. She was entering sensitive territory and Dally still didn’t want to let her in. “If there’s something wrong you need’a tell me.” She pleaded, taking a step forward. “It don’t matter, (y/n)-” “Yes, it does! It does, Dal,” “I’m scared, alright?” He snapped. His eyes looked elsewhere, avoiding her. ‘I’m scared about where I’m gonna be five, ten years down the line.” He struggled with his words but he continued. “I want a life with you, (y/n), but I ain’t good at nothin’. How am I supposed to take care of you when we’re older?” “Dal, we don’t have to worry about that now, we got plenty of time,” She assured. “I needa figure it out soon.” he said flatly. “You’re not alone,” she said, embracing him. He was taken by surprise, but he hugged her back, tightly. “I’m here for you. Anything we gotta go through, we’ll go through it together.” Dally kept thinking about how he was the luckiest man in the world. He held her tight, promising to himself that he’d treat her like gold, and that he’d never let her slip through his fingers so easily ever again. “I don’t wanna fight anymore.” She said quietly. “We won’t, darlin’. He said, pulling her closer. “We won’t.”

Chapter One: All Art is Quite Useless

“Let’s fall in love for the summer.”

Mikey chokes on his spit and goes into a fit of coughs managing to squeak out a measly “What?” in between coughs.

Pete hands Mikey a can of Coke before responding, “Stop loving me in September.” Pete looks around before he pats and rubs Mikey’s back to ease the coughing a bit.

Mikey nods, taking a sip from Pete’s soda. His coughing calmed, he sucks in a deep breathe before saying, “I know what you said.” He stops for a moment to think, looking through the fence that separated the bands and the rest of Warped Tour. Admiring the orange and pink hue the sunset paints the field they’re in. He forgot which town they’re in and it’s only the fourth day.

He looks back at Pete who was picking at his lip while staring off into the distance. It’s a bad habit, they both know this, but they have worse habits to deal with.

Mikey sighs, grabbing Pete’s hand, “Hey, stop that.” Pushing his hand away from his mouth, his fingers quickly wrapping around Pete’s palm. Pete scans the area, giving Mikey’s hand a quick squeeze before placing a small peck to his lips. Mikey smiles, looking at the ground before back at Pete again.

“Yeah. Sure, I’m down,” His smile falters, looking away from Pete for a moment, “Only for the summer?” His eyes are back on Pete who’s now smiling, “Of course!” Pete pulls Mikey in a bit closer, indulging in Mikey and drinking in his scent of sweat and a hint of cologne before asking, “Why would it be longer?” He inspects the area once more before he uses his free hand to push Mikey’s hair out of his face, cupping his cheek and pulling Mikey in for a kiss.

Later that night, Mikey was deep in thought in his bunk on the My Chem tour bus, skimming through the pages of an old book he brought with him. He fingers the small tears at the corners of the hardcover book, the maroon cover with gold lettering was all too familiar yet the contents inside remained unread. He turns the book and reads the cover, his fingers feeling the golden indents on the leather.

The Picture of Dorian Gray.

He stole the book from his old job at Barnes and Noble. They weren’t fond of him asking for weeks off when performing across the East Coast with his band and their friends from Midtown. Fired after two years but at least he has this and their band name as a memory.

Not that he read the book or anything. He worked in the music section; books weren’t really his thing but something about this one caught his attention. Gerard had an Oscar Wilde phase during his last year of high school after reading The Canterville Ghost, so Mikey is somewhat familiar with the author.

He opens a random page and reads briefly before stopping and setting the book aside, letting out a long sigh. He curls up in himself, hugging his knees and staring at the page before his train of thought was interrupted by a light tapping on the wall outside his bunk beyond the thin, navy blue curtain.

He remains silent before a small voice spoke out, “Hey, Mikes? Are you there?”

It’s Gerard.

Mikey leans forward and pulls open the curtain, revealing his brother behind the navy shield.

“Can I come in?” Gerard asks and before Mikey could answer, he crawled in, making himself at home. Sitting against the wall next to Mikey, mimicking his position.

“Sure.” Mikey responds faintly in hopes of filling the silence that plagued the bunk and that part of the bus. The rest of the guys were probably out goofing off with Cortez or maybe at the front of the bus playing video games. Mikey didn’t know and frankly, didn’t care either.

The pair sit there for a while, simply enjoying each other’s company before Mikey notices Gerard’s gaze, silently cursing himself upon the realization that he’s reading the page that Mikey left off.

Gerard would constantly pester him to read the book and he never got around to it, ultimately convincing himself that at the age of 23 Oscar Wilde isn’t worth reading.

“Live. Live the wonderful life that is in you.” Gerard reads out loud, seemingly towards Mikey. Mikey just holds himself tighter, looking away from Gerard and the book.

He remains silent as Gerard reads him the rest of the passage.

“Be afraid of nothing,” Gerard finishes. Gerard grabs the book and closes it, looking over at Mikey. “What are you afraid of, Mikes?”

Mikey is suddenly filled with annoyance. He knows his brother means well but he really doesn’t want to answer, and he knows if he doesn’t Gerard will start asking questions. Ask him about where he was all day, why he’s so quiet, why is he finally reading Oscar Wilde after officially declaring his personal beef with the dead author while drunk after one of their shows a couple of years ago.

“The water and cutesy animated films.” Mikey answers and Gerard replies with an annoyed sigh. Mikey rolls his eyes, turning to meet the eyes of his brother for the first time since he got into the bunk.

“Where were you all day?” Gerard asks, “I know you’re old enough to watch over yourself, but I haven’t seen you since after our set.” Mikey looks away, he knows what’s coming next.

“Is it a girl?” Gerard asks his brother, gingerly placing a hand on Mikey’s shoulder.

Mikey frowned.

He knew his brother was the feminist type, often advocating for women’s rights on stage and in person. He always admired that about his brother, his courage. Just like how he wore makeup for the first time when him and his parents left to go to blockbuster when Gerard was 16, or how he would wear drag to school just for the hell of it or how Gerard would kiss Bert for the Taste of Chaos tour. That was a riot. Pissed off a lot of dudes from the scene but Gerard didn’t care.

He always knew his brother was brave like that, kissing and hugging dudes and holding them close and not being weird about it. He wishes he didn’t spend his first two years sleeping with every girl he could find to make up for the fact that he was questioning his sexuality.

The way he dressed and carried himself didn’t help either.

After the few incidents he was faced while on the bus, he decided that it’d be best if Gerard was his personal chauffeur rather than being asked by some older dude if he’d like to have a “good time” with him and some of his buddies at some shady club.

But that’s beside the point.

“No.” He answered coldly.

He was close with Gerard, yes, but he hadn’t talked to Gerard about his sexuality crisis. He knew that Gerard would understand but he’s not sure if he’s comfortable enough to talk about it himself. He didn’t want to push the responsibility on Gerard for him to deal with and then run off to whatever new problem or crisis is in his life.

“Then what is it?” Gerard’s voice was tight, and he was closer now.

Here goes nothing.

“It’s not a girl.”

Gerard was about to ask another question before Mikey cut him off.

“I was spending the day with Pete.” He started to stammer, “And uhm, He uh, he asked me if I could… uh.” Mikey was having some second thoughts, unsure if he could finish his sentence then Bob interrupted their conversation and Mikey thanked the God that he no longer believes in.

“Hey, Toro and Frank are wondering if you guys wanna stop at a 7/11 for some slurpees. We have the entire day tomorrow before we need to be at Dallas.” He asked the pair, his hands occupied with poker chips in one and Ray’s blue DS in another.

Mikey was quick to answer, “Sure.” Quickly getting up and out of the bunk, leaving Gerard behind with Bob.

“Tell me something, Frank,” Gerard asks his best friend who’s occupied with stuffing candy bars in a slurpee cup.

“Mmm, something.”

Gerard grumbles and Frank snickers at his annoyance.

“Ugh, no. I was talking to Mikey earlier and he was talking to me about Pete and how he asked him to do something, but Bob interrupted us before he could say anything.” Gerard crossed his arms, carefully watching his brother and the other bassist fuck with the nacho cheese machine, laughing amongst themselves and Gerard swore that there was a moment between them. He knew he had to get to the bottom of it.

“Well, I mean, do you think it’s anything important?” Frank asked as he attempted to shove another bag of skittles in the cup, completely oblivious to the pair that Gerard is watching.

“I think so. He was stressed earlier, and I didn’t think we wanted to tell me anything in the first place.” His eyes were off Mikey and Pete now as he didn’t want to be accused of anything later.

“Then don’t bother him.” Frank says bluntly, grabbing another cup for an actual slurpee while Gerard follows him to the machine.

“Why? He obviously seems bothered. Do you think Pete’s bothering him?” Gerard looks back at the pair who were now in the chip aisle, Pete picking for them both it seems.

Frank turns to look at Gerard, “Dude, he’s not 19 anymore and even if he was, you have to stop treating him like a child. Him and Pete seem perfectly fine. Maybe Pete asked him to play a show for them or something and was nervous to ask you if he could practice with them instead? And even if it wasn’t that. It’s totally fine. You know Mikey, he doesn’t get hurt easily.”

Gerard was a bit stunned by Frank’s response and just stared at Frank as he filled his cup with cherry-flavored slurpee. He knows he’s right, but he can’t help but worry about Mikey sometimes. He is a bit reckless but an adult. If he needs help, he’ll ask.

The two bands meet up at the cash register, their bassists in the back of the group while the others talk. Their chatter filling a mostly empty 7/11 while Pete and Mikey stand close together, their pinkies locked as they drink their slurpees feeling like the only people in the world.
