'It's the start of something' – Mick Schumacher follows in Dad's sports car footsteps

Mick Schumacher's career stalled after two difficult years – now he's set to complete a circle started by his father by making his Le Mans Hypercar debut this weekend

Almost 33 years ago, a young Michael Schumacher found himself indignantly stranded just outside the Silverstone pit exit when his Mercedes C11 Group C car’s gear linkage crumbled during qualifying for the British Empire Trophy, as the ex-WEC round was known then. After the Silver Arrows junior driver’s mechanics came to his rescue – legging it down the pitlane to fix the car – the incident was deemed 'outside assistance' and the German hotshot was promptly excluded from the event, along with his Le Mans-winning team-mate Jochen Mass. Over three decades later, his son Mick is now getting to grips with what he calls "the basics" of a fast and furious, 40-car strong sports car field as he prepares to make his World Endurance Championship debut this weekend for Alpine in Qatar. Father and son have an uncanny reverse symmetry to their careers – while Michael had a couple of years of sports car appearances before famously launching into F1, son Mick is now embarking on an endurance racing journey after a couple of years in the grand prix world. Speaking to Motor Sport, the former F2 and F3 champion is clearly keen to put recent unsatisfying years behind him when he was either stuck at the back of the F1 grid with Haas or on the bench as a reserve driver for Mercedes – and describes how glad he is to be back behind the wheel.

"It's amazing," he enthuses. "It was my first season [in 2023] not racing in over 15 years, so it felt quite weird and I didn’t like it, so I'm happy that I'm back in the racing seat. Also, I feel like that working aspect of trying to prove yourself, trying to get after it, is something so special and unique to sports in general, and if you just sit on the bench, you don’t really get to do that. “I think it's definitely a start of something, which hopefully is a good season, a good project. Who knows what the future holds?" With limited testing in WEC, over the course of the Prologue and practice sessions Schumacher has just been trying to acclimatise to what is a congested Losail track at the best of times; a tight circuit originally designed for MotoGP bikes. "It's been my first experience with every car on track," he says, slightly wide-eyed. "I think it was good to have that with the GT cars, and see how [a number of] Hypercars behave on track – it's out of the ordinary to me [after] racing in open wheels. But it’s been positive, I got to do my laps. I think we learned a lot." Having only driven featherlight karts and single seaters up to this point, Schumacher admits that Alpine A424 has come as a bit of a shock to the system. Its Mecachrome V6 and rear-axle MGU might pump out a combined 670bhp, but compared to his Haas F1 car the French car still feels like a bit of an electric blue tank. "It's a very heavy car, low downforce, low power compared to what I’m used to," he says. "But there's still this racing aspect, there's still this aspect of trying to improve every single bit. And at the end, [while] not everybody has the same [cars], we're all pretty much in the same boat." Schumacher said that he was still adjusting to driving within a team of three, sharing the same car, rather than as an individual. "It's a very different approach to F1. Sometimes I still catch myself trying to be the fastest. It's just about learning to take the information, process it and be able to use it right away, counter-checking with the experiences of my teammates so I don't go in blind. We're trying to position ourselves with a car where we know we can last around ten hours."

With the Qatar race stretching out so long, Schumacher says that he has to be ready for anything that might be thrown his way, clearly relishing the challenge of this new discipline. That said, the young German makes no bones about where he’s trying to get back to. WEC is quite simply a springboard. "The closeness to Europe and the ability to merge it with my reserve driver role in F1 are for me the main aspects," he says when asked as to the reason behind the WEC move. "It's important to just go racing again, to stay race fit, sharp in my head so that whenever the opportunity arises in F1 I'm ready to switch over to that. But I think that there's a big future in Hypercar at the moment, with so many manufacturers coming in,and more races coming into the calendar, I hope, at some points. I think there's loads of great things to come in both championships." When asked 'Why Alpine?,' a similar response is forthcoming. "The closeness to F1 is definitely a big aspect," he admits. "But also just the fact to see how committed Alpine was as a brand to push this project – it's also a big factor. The combination was just difficult to resist." Part of the excitement around WEC this season is that in a 19-strong Hypercar line-up, no one is quite sure what the competitive order will be. Heavyweights Ferrari and Toyota will likely be near the sharp end, but this season Porsche and Cadillac look like serious threats to their supremacy. Meanwhile, new kids on the Hypercar block Alpine and Lamborghini are the dark horses. Even Schumacher himself isn't sure. "Honestly, I don't think anybody knows, really, where we are," he says. "I think we're just very excited to see how it's going to go for the ten hours here. It's a great track, it's a great place, great venue to come to, and it'll be exciting to get the first experience in race trim and try to contextualise every little detail and see where we end up."

Steve looks at his friends in the quinjet.

Natasha sits flying the plane, concentrating on the way ahead, Clint sitting next to her.

True partners, he thinks, and he feels a pang for Bucky, wanting what they have in someone to always fall back on. Sam shifts in his chair and nudges Steve.

“Are you okay?” he asks gently.

Tony sits across from him, his arm in plaster, and bruises still visible, though his eyes are closed he knows he’s not asleep.

“I’m fine,” he answers.

Bruce sits on the other side of him, and he can feel his nervousness.

It feels hard to believe it had been less than a week since the infiltration.

Christmas was fast approaching.

So was the wedding… if there was going to be one.

Happiness had felt just around the corner.

Until it wasn’t.

He wants this to be over.

“How long?” he calls.

“Thirty minutes,” Natasha replies immediately.

There’s a castle in the middle of the forest.

It’s picturesque and Tony thinks that it’s probably a place he’d like to buy if it wasn’t swarming with Hydra operatives.

He grins to himself, sends the address and cloaking codes and tells Pepper to buy it.

Jarvis guides Tony, and he flies high over the others.

The Iron Legion flies around, two either side of him.

Natasha drives, towards the base, Clint in tow; whilst Steve circles around on his bike. Bruce remains in the jet, ready to go if needed.

He’d apologised but they’d all reassured him that this was for the best.

Tony hoped that they wouldn’t need him.

He saw the toll it took on Bruce, the pain of the aftermath. He felt oddly protective of his friend and shielding him from the pain of his life.

He shoots the first missile at the tower, the deflection hitting; as Jarvis tells him that there’s a shield over it.

“Thanks Captain Obvious,” he says sarcastically, sending the other four suits to provide back up for the others as Natasha and Clint meet a small resistance.

They surge forward, with no regard for safety.

He watches Natasha smile.

Flying back to Steve, he has Jarvis scan the building again.

“Basement floor,” he confirms.

Relaying the information to the others, he finds the building junction box and sets his own directional EMP.

“See how you like it,” he mutters.

Sam flies overhead, seeing all the electricity leave the castle and the panic of a couple of soldiers below. Tony sends the coordinates to his HUD display and he smiles, flies low to Steve and yells.

“Basement! He’s in the basement!”

Tony lands and Sam nods.

“There’s not as many as I thought,” Sam says, heading through the entrance door.

“No,” Tony thinks, “there’s not.”

Steve, Natasha and Clint catch up.

“It seems quiet,” Natasha observes.

Even more-so, as they traverse into the castle.

They come up against one more, that Steve throws his shield at, knocking him out.

The head down; Tony heading their formation, as there’s… no one.

No one comes to greet them and as they move further down, the sense of unease deepens.

Natasha’s grip on her gun tightens.

Clint’s arrow raises higher and Steve stands side by side with Tony, shield in front of him and Sam.

They reach the door, Jarvis confirming that someone is inside and communicate non verbally with each other.

Tony blows the door.

The dust clears and reveals… nothing.

“Jarvis?” he says, a warning tone.

Steve steps forward and stands on a plate, much like the ones at the base of the Avengers Tower.

“Shit,” he says, stepping off and protecting the others from an inevitable blast; only it doesn’t come.

“What was that?” Sam laughs, as he heads into the room behind Steve and Tony, seeing the hallway leading further down.

When they’re all in the room, the door slams behind them, and Tony rolls his eyes.

“It’s not like we can’t blow a hole in the wall,” he smirks inside the suit.

Jarvis assures again that the only heat signature is from below.

“You’re sure it’s Pogodin?”

Jarvis confirms and Natasha doesn’t feel good about the inevitable trap that lays ahead.

Steve takes the lead.

Pogodin stands ahead of them, arms up and large smile on his face.

“Hello Avengers.”

He puts on a gas mask, his face transforming into one of nightmares.

Tony steps forward.

“Do you know what The Raft is?” he says, threatening.

“Tony—“ Clint starts.

But it’s too late, smoke and gas fill the room and Pogodin laughs manically.

“Do you know what you fear?” he asks, “I know what I fear. It’s certainly not you. I know that whilst you are here, then there’s another team after the sceptre, no one protecting it.”

Tony reaches him, pulling him up with one hand, ripping off the mask.

“It’ll be on a submarine and no way to get it,” he laughs, as Tony throws him against the wall.

“All the want for revenge, and you’ve failed to protect… anything, and it will be your downfall.”

Sam drops first, coughing heavily.

“You didn’t think we knew you would come?”

Sam’s vision blurs and he tries to pull himself to stand, holding onto the wall. Clint is next, and Natasha rushes to him.

He looks at her like she’s a ghost and he touches her face.

“Nat?”

Breathing becomes difficult for all of them except Tony and Steve as more smoke and gas heavily sits in the room.

Tony blows the wall, only to be met with more bedrock.

Pogodin laughs.

“We are in the lower recesses of a castle, where do you think you’re going?”

Tony punches him, his anger rising, again and again with his one good arm and swinging fist, until he’s held back by Steve.

“We need to go,” he says urgently, gesturing to the others.

Natasha points weakly upwards, then raises her gun and shoots Pogodin in the head.

Tony holds Clint and Natasha under his arms, depositing them into the quinjet with Bruce.

Both unconscious.

Both sweating.

“Help them,” he says, before flying off to help Steve and Sam.

Urgently, he tries to reach Shield.

Jarvis confirms with Fury that the sceptre is in fact gone and anger curls around him.

He returns with Sam and Steve drives in, all of them back together.

“What happened?” Bruce asks, taking their vitals, as the jet takes off.

“Gas,” Steve says glumly.

“Are you okay?” Bruce asks, checking over Sam.

He sits heavily on the seat next to Tony, and rests his head in his hands.

OHHHH OKAY SO UM I'M NOT THE BEST AT EXPLAINING SHIT BUT

MotoGP, the beloved, is different to the other series on this list as it is motorcycle based and fundamentally more dangerous (or adrenaline pumping, your choice).

MotoGP has it's own feeder series, MotoE (Electric bikes) Moto2 and Moto3 (actual children), there is so much happening in all three series, it's crazy.

I recommend races like Sepang 2015 (DIVORCE RACE), India 2023 (Bez Podium heheheh), Argentina 2018 (BATSHIT) and Phillip Island (always gives interesting races.)

Yang Xiao Long vs. Akihiko Sanada (RWBY vs. Persona)

RWBY's heavy hitter and Persona's bruising boxer duke it out!

(I wanted to use "electric emperor", but Kanji Tatsumi can also be called that)

Fighter 1: Yang Xiao Long, the blazing dragon from RWBY.

Fighter 2: Akihiko Sanada, the specialist boxer of Persona's SEES.

Wiz: We may lose our loved ones to events out of our control, but that only leads us down a path to finding a new family to look after and care for.

Boomstick: And the best way to do it is by saving the world through punching! He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick.

Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor, and skills to find out who would win... a Death Battle.

PREFACE:

We had Weiss vs. Mitsuru as an actual episode and Yates did a commission for Penny Polendina vs. Aegis, so why not our hard-hitting punching people? P.S., Don't think I hate RWBY. I just love the idea of certain RWBY characters fighting, nay, interacting with other fictional characters that are similar to them, especially if they have some sort of connection through crossovers.

WHY:

Connections:

1. Both fight via boxing and punching.

2. Both lost family members that served as motivation for their actions. Yang lost her stepmom and was abandoned by her birth mother, which led to a rough childhood for Yang, resulting in her thrill-seeking lifestyle (essentially living her childhood later on as she couldn't do it as a kid). Akihiko's sister died when they were both young and his best friend Shinjiro died, but he steeled his resolve which led to his Persona's growth. You can also add in Blake leaving Yang.

3. Both have a specific trait that they don't exhibit much but are now seen as the chore trait of their personalities due to side material. Those are their passions for puns and protein respectively.

4. Funnily enough, both have powerful connections to a younger sister (Ruby and Miki respectively).

Personal reasons: I'll be blunt, I want this to be another Balrog vs. TJ Combo. I think it could work, but the only other way I see this match starting would be an encounter similar to those of Tartarus, the Yellow Trailer, or Yang's interactions with Shay. What I want the most from the fight is for them to compliment each other's physical strength, treating the fight first like a friendly spar and then turning up the heat (like All Might vs. Might Guy). The encounter could happen in the open since both have a history of wandering in search of something (Yang would be on her bike, and she has searched for info on her mom and Akihiko traveled the world, searching to become stronger), which would come into play in the Notable Events. If Akihiko is shown in his P4A model, I'd want him to use his knife, but it'll likely not happen. I also want some lighting and hothead puns, and I think the golden colors of Yang's Blaze and golden colors will complement Caesar's blue and violet lighting as well as Aki's scarlet and black clothes.

THE FIGHT:

Art and animation: This one will either be 3D like Weiss vs. Mitsuru. It could also be a 2D fight like a potential BBCTB fight, but I think they'll go with the former because all RWBY fights (as of me writing this) have been in 3D so they could distinguish themselves from BBCTB. I think the animation from All Might vs. Might Guy or even Blake vs. Mikasa could work with the CQC involved, but the former is the better option.

Possible setup:

OPTION A: They're part of a tournament like the Yang vs. Bakugo DBX (Yang would look like she did in Vol. 1-3 and Aki would look like he did in P3 for some reason) or a boxing match a la Balrog and TJ Combo, or even Heihachi vs Geese. The prize is cash, which Yang wants for her bike and Aki wants for equipment, be it for boxing or the Tartarus quests. Or ramen.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! Introducing our fighters! In one corner, you have the blazing sunny dragon from Beacon, the fiery and explosive Yang Xiao Long! On the other, Gekkougan High's boxing captain, the shocking protein junky, Akihiko Sanada!" The announcer mumbles, asking someone near him whether or not this is the chick that broke a kid's leg even after she won a tournament match, but quickly gets back into the job.

Yang: "You better not go easy on me."

Akihiko: "Same to you, blondie."

They walk back to their corners and prepare themselves.

OPTION B: They encounter out in the open, likely in an urban scene like the Kingdom of Vale or Tatsumi Port Island. Yang is riding her bike, searching for something, be it info or thrills. However, a screaming man falls in front of her and she swerves out of the way, only to find more people falling out of the sky. She hopes to find the source of the commotion and see Aki punching out thugs. She speeds in, excited and ready for a fight.

LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!/FIGHT! :

1. If the fight starts with Option B, then Yang enters like in Vol. 6's fight against Adam, so away goes her bike! Aki notices, and either punches away the vehicle or dodges out of the way. Yang skydives in, reeling in a punch. Aki prepares his own strike, and BOOM!

2. They both relish the combat. Their competitive natures lead them to be ever so slightly boastful, but they'll complement each other's power.

3. Akihiko summons Caesar and lightning is launched. Yang makes puns as a result: "Well, that was shocking."

4. Yang uses Ember Celica and Aki dodges.

5. Combos from BBCTB and P4A/U.

6. Yang takes advantage of both their up-close approaches and uses her bombs. The explosives catch Aki off guard.

7. Eventually, a strand of Yang's hair falls, and she notices. She thusly activates Blaze, and Aki is in awe of the increase in firepower (ba-dum-tss), even if momentarily, but he then embraces the challenge and rises to the occasion. "Bring it on!".

8. The ending is a clash of fists like in the cover of Brandon Yates's Blazing Fury, and it would pay homage to the Yellow Trailer and Akihiko's one-hit KO from the Arena games. If it's option A, then the arena, the spectators, and the announcer are blown away (ba-dum-tss) by the impact, and the winner is left standing, panting, and tired. However, they thank the loser for the fun and challenge. I want the winner to take one of the loser's weapons as a memorandum, but I don't think it'd be in character.

RESULT:

+ Blaze allows for strength increase

+ Has ranged weaponry

≥ Has slight versatility due to her kicks and weapons

≥ Likely has longer experience due to her training under Taiyang

I wanted to use "got beaten to the punch" but Roshi vs. Jiraya had that as a punch line. Dio vs. Alucard used the "owned" punch line like Mario vs. Sonic 2018 but then added to it.

MUSIC:

Name: "Beat You To The Punch"

The title makes reference to Yang's love of puns and both their primary methods of fighting.

Art: The art would depict the two arm wrestling, Yang's arm blazing and Aki's having lightning coursing about it. There could be a Strawberry Sunrise with Caesar's sword in it in the background.

Sound: I Burn + Mass Destruction. The beginning is MD but with a rock vibe, and the climax has I Burn, like in Yang vs. Mercury.

Another fascinating idea, but sadly, one I can't really give my opinion on. First, I'm not familiar with Persona (Saw bits of 4 and 5 and that's it). Second, after the last Death Battle, I'm hesitant to pit RWBY against them, since Persona characters seem a bit... OP compared to RWBY.

Still, I will honor your submission with at least this...

Your phone buzzed. Then Reggie’s phone rang several times before dropping off. Both of you were too occupied to notice the ringing or flashing. Eventually, whoever wanted you both stopped calling.

Reggie moaned as you kissed him. His hands holding you steady as you leaned down over him kissing deeply. Your clothes were tossed to the floor as you rolled your hip grinding against him and sighing softly at the satisfaction. “Touching you feels like I have electricity at my fingertips.” Reggie groaned out as he ran his hands up your sides and you leaned in to kiss a hickey onto his collarbone. He moved underneath you and let out a breathy sigh before using a hand on your shoulder to pull you up to straddle his lap so he could look up at you. He grinned until his phone vibrated across the bed and slid across to you.

“You have over sixty missed calls.” You muttered and Reggie groaned. He fumbled around for his phone, managing to grab yours.

“So do you… wonder what's going on.” He said quietly. He went to unlock your phone and you snatched it from his hand.

“If you look we’re going to get dragged into some stupid stuff. We could just say here and say we didn’t hear or see anything.” You said quickly as you dumped the phone down on the bed. A crashing noise made you both jump and Reggie sat up, his hand carefully keeping you steady on his lap.

“I think the stupid may have found us.” Reggie muttered as he grabbed his phone and checked it. “Yeah. Urm… so… We need to get out.” 

“Is it bad?” You asked. He hurried to grab your clothes and tossed them at you before he hurried to open his bedroom window as quietly as he could.

“I promise you. If it wasn’t serious there would be nothing that could get me out of here right now. Trust me I would rather be here with you.” He said as he helped you out of the window and onto the roof. As he climbed out he pointed to the trellis near the wall. You saw people pushing bikes up the road as he helped you down and the two of you tried to quietly hurry towards the road.

“Trust some crazy killer to be a total cock block.” You grumbled. Reggie tried his best not to laugh as you met up with the group who hurried to get you away from Reggie’s house.
