Ok so for all my windows using friends. We all know that new windows photos is dreadful and extra slow and bloaty on slower computers. There is a better solution for photo viewing on your PC, and as an added bonus this comes with a photo managing app that does many of the same things as adobe bridge. Oh and it's free.

What is this stunning software you ask?

Great question! Back in 2002, Google created a nifty piece of software known as Picasa Photos. They eventually killed this software in 2016 to focus on the infinitely more spying Google Photos (I'm not kidding about Google photos having privacy issues. They literally got sued over this in my home state of IL for violating our biometric privacy laws. I got paid $500 from Google for this btw). Moving on, Picasa slapped and that's why they killed it. Fortunately I am not the only Picasa Photo Viewer 3 enthusiast on the internet and there are others who saved the installation exe files. That said, I have helpfully found one that works which you can now download from my google drive here. Note that you cannot use the Google Photos/Google Account related options in the software anymore as Google has discontinued support for it.

Decontaminate Colors:– This option is used to de-fringe colors. Replacing the colors of edge tiles with their nearest neighbors. This is for when you see a little halo around the hair after your selection.

Select the area you want to output as a New Layer with a Layer Mask, once you are satisfied. You can use it to do this without modifying the original image.

Complex Backgrounds Techniques

Hair Selection with Channels

When your images have complex backgrounds, you might want to consider using channels for a better selection. To begin with, head to the Channels panel. Seek out the channel which provides the most contrast between hair and environment. Duplicate this channel. Followed by Image > Adjustments> Levels. This will only make the contrast higher. Afterwards, use this channel as input. Ctrl+click (Windows) or Cmd+click the channel thumbnail.

Painting Over Specific Areas with the Brush Tool

Once you select this, the Brush Tool can be used for any manual touch-ups. Paint out where the selection may miss finer details using a soft round brush (B). This is super helpful for adding back in lost strands or taking out unwanted background elements.

This book was chosen because it fulfills the category “Informational or Biography.” To date, This Is How We Do It has received four awards: the 2017 Booklist Editors’ Choice Best Book of the Year, the 2017 Amazon Best Book of the Year, the 2017 Parents’ Choice Award Winner, and was a Junior Library Guild Selection. It was also the recipient of many glowing reviews from across different literary review publications,which have praised its ability to showcase the concept of mirrors and windows, which allow readers to see themselves and others represented, which is important for emotional and social development. For this review, I will be evaluating illustrations, design and layout, and style, and accuracy.

Although their purpose is to provide information to the reader that is comprehensive and easy to digest, informational books can be fun! This Is How We Do It creates a learning environment for the reader that is both fun and playful through various illustrations that are maintained in a single style, though the illustrations themselves do not sacrifice the informational integrity of the writing. The illustrations are simple, yet have an incredible attention to detail which help to flesh out texture and other colors (i.e. a bruised banana). The color is also plentiful, though most of the colors used are muted and do not strain the eye. The illustrations of the children and their families are based on real people, too, who can be seen in photographs towards the end of the book.

Design and Layout

This book follows the lives of seven different children, which could pose a problem when it comes to formatting and keeping each story separate. However, the layout of the book is clean and creates sections where each child is able to exist freely in the space provided. Typically, these spaces are evenly-sized boxes that show a variety of images, such as a child’s portrait, their home, or a spread of clothing or food. What child and their country is represented in each box also varies and tends to change from page to page, which allows the reader’s eye to wander and take in more information without feeling locked into a pattern.

Accuracy

Accuracy is important for an informational book like This Is How We Do It, because it tells the story of seven children. It also includes seven countries and seven cultures. This can be daunting for any writer on any single subject dealing with humanity, much less seven. The author, Matt Lamothe, states that he gathered his information from seven real children and their families around the world, which was facilitated through email and messaging apps. A guide with detailed instructions on what information Lamothe needed was created, which included personal narratives and photos. The photos were used as references.
