Cashless society or not?

In 1966, World Future Society magazine forecast that “credit cards will virtually eliminate currency by 1986.”

A Sept. 26 Professional Numismatic Guild online post was quick to point out that “the recent hurricanes that hit Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico showed what happens when electrical power is knocked out to ATM machines and there are widespread mobile phone and wifi service outages leaving storm victims with no quick access to cash or cyber currency.”

And, what about former U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Allen Greenspan’s statement, “If in the words of British economist John Maynard Keynes, gold were a ‘barbarous relic?’ Central bankers around the world would not have so much of an asset whose rate of return, including storage costs, is negative.”

Are we heading for a time when coins and bank notes will be archaeological curiosities? A 2013 MasterCard survey indicated that about 90 percent of consumer payments value in Canada were transacted using non-cash instruments.

A May 2017 study of 20 of the world’s top economies conducted by the global travel site Forex indicates that Canada leads the world in embracing cashless technology. About half of all Canadians are “ready to get rid of bank notes and coins.”

According to the Forex study, right behind Canada in adapting a cashless economy is Sweden, followed by the United Kingdom, France and the United States, in that order. About 900 of Sweden’s 1,600 banks no longer accept or allow the withdrawal of cash. There was an increase of about £7.75 billion (about US$10.27 billion) in cashless financial transactions in the United Kingdom between the first half of 2015 and the same period during 2016.

According to the Federal Reserve, the average American owns three credit cards, with only about 32 percent of all retail transactions involving cash during 2015.

At the same time, the Internet research company YouGov.com found that about 56 percent of American adults fear that electronic payments increase the chances of fraud or theft.

The argument against high denomination bank notes is also part of the argument. Peter Sands, former Standard Chartered Bank PLC president, said in an Oct. 14 The Guardian newspaper article that such notes should be scrapped because they are more likely to be used in crime. Bitcoin, which is a virtually untraceable electronic cryptocurrency, was not addressed.

It is true that in recent years Canada dumped its $1,000 bank note, while the European Union has considered dropping its 500-euro, sometimes dubbed “Bin Laden,” notes due to a suggestion these notes fund terrorism. It also appears to be true that shredded 500-euro notes were for some yet unknown reason found in a UBS bank sewer system in Switzerland in early September.

The world may or may not be ready for a totally cashless economy, but we know there are a substantial number of electronic payment systems already in existence. While perhaps the best known among them is Bitcoin, which bypasses traditional payment processes, there are many others.

Ethereum is the second largest cryptocurrency. As with Bitcoin, Ethereum uses blockchain technology.

While governments lament over large denomination bank notes being a way to avoid detection, they should be looking more closely at Digital Wallet, where money can be “parked” outside the banking system and for that reason becomes non-detectable.

Another challenge to physical currency is Apple Pay and Android Pay, each being forms of contactless payment that uses smartphones for financial transactions.

In March 2007 Safaricom, an associate of Vodafone in Kenya, introduced the mobile phone-based money transfer system M-Pesa. M-Pesa has been particularly successful in Afghanistan, Albania, Egypt, Kenya and Tanzania, all being places where traditional banking services are limited. In this case, the electronic payment systems fill a genuine need.

If you can’t beat them, join them goes an old phrase. The latest entry appears to be CrypotRuble, an electronic national currency system being considered by Russia’s central bank. If Russia follows through, they will follow Japan, the Philippines and others that are also considering electronic national currency systems.

Where does this put coins and bank notes? There is no way to predict, but if it is any indicator the U.S. Mint produced more business strike coins in 2015 than in any other year since 2001, backing off a modest six percent during 2016. World Future Society didn’t appear to get it right, but the debate goes on.

Design wise, Tecno mobile didn’t disappoint at all with the unibody full aluminium metal material used on the Phantom 8. Its front panel featured a 2.5D glass to give its Full HD display screen premium and stunning look. Tecno mobile said it uses Diamond Fire Design crafted with 8 processes and said it is Fashionable, unique, luxurious, comfortable. What do you say about that folks?Though as at the time of first publishing this article (October 21 2017), it is still unclear how many security measures is in place to protect the user’s privacy and their position. Last year’s Tecno Phantom 6 has Finger print sensor at the rear just below the back camera while its Plus variant features both Finger print scanner and Iris scanner.

October 22 2017 Update: The new Phantom came with only Finger Print scanner as its security measure and it is placed behind its rear camera as it is in Phantom 6.

Phantom 8 is a 5.7-inch IPS touchscreen display smartphone with 1080 x 1920 pixels (Full HD) screen resolution device.

Processor & Operating System.

There is currently no news on the type of processor used on the 8th iteration of the Tecno Phantoms but they are expected to feature the latest Mediatek Helio P25 Deca-Core processor with clocked speed at 2.6 GHz. Since Google 8.0 Orea is still available for few phone companies, the soon to be release phantoms are expected to come with Android 7.1.1 Nougat on board.

October 22 2017 Update: The new Phantom eight is powered by an Octa-Core Mediatek processor with clocked speed at 2.6GHz. It runs on HiOS 3.0 based on Android 7.0 Nougat out the box upgradable to Android 8.0 Orea.

Camera, Battery & Storage.

Tecno mobile has confirmed the phantom 8 and Tecno phantom 8 plus will be featuring a dual rear camera in one of their latest teasing. One of the trending features of many recently launched smartphones. Though we don’t have the details of the camera.

Launch Event Update: OMG! Tecno Phantom 8 features a whooping 20MP front facing camera with Led Flash and capabilities to take very quality pictures even in a low light condition. The front camera has smooth and brighten mode. The rear camera on the other hand is a Sony IMX386 ultra pixel lens 12MP + 13MP dual camera.

Few among the features of the rear camera are Auto-refocus, 2X optical Zoom on the 12MP and 10X super digital zoom on the 13MP.

We actually still don’t have the full details on the size of the battery, but Tecno mobile did say that it will get fully charge within 70 minutes (1 hour : 10 minutes) with the USB Type-C light speed charging port and connector.

The newly launched Tecno Phantom 8 came with  6GB RAM / 64GB internal memory with support for SD card up to 2TB. Also it came with hybrid SIM set up meaning you can either use one micro sim and one nano sim or a micro sim and an SD card.

If you’ve attended Abundance 360 or Singularity University, or followed my blogs, you’ll probably agree with me that the way our children will learn is going to fundamentally transform over the next decade.

Here’s an overview of the top five technologies that will reshape the future of education:

Tech 1: Virtual Reality (VR) can make learning truly immersive. Research has shown that we remember 20% of what we hear, 30% of what we see, and up to 90% of what we do or simulate. Virtual reality yields the latter scenario impeccably. VR enables students to simulate flying through the bloodstream while learning about different cells they encounter, or travel to Mars to inspect the surface for life. To make this a reality, Google Cardboard just launched its Pioneer Expeditions product. Under this program, thousands of schools around the world have gotten a kit containing everything a teacher needs to take his or her class on a virtual trip. While data on VR use in K-12 schools and colleges have yet to be gathered, the steady growth of the market is reflected in the surge of companies (including zSpace, Alchemy VR and Immersive VR Education) solely dedicated to providing schools with packaged education curriculum and content.

Add to VR a related technology called augmented reality (AR), and experiential education really comes alive. Imagine wearing an AR headset that is able to superimpose educational lessons on top of real-world experiences. Interested in botany? As you walk through a garden, the AR headset superimposes the name and details of every plant you see.

Tech 2: 3D Printing is allowing students to bring their ideas to life. Never mind the computer on every desktop (or a tablet for every student), that’s a given. In the near future, teachers and students will want or have a 3D printer on the desk to help them learn core science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) principles. Bre Pettis, of MakerBot Industries, in a grand but practical vision, sees a 3D printer on every school desk in America. “Imagine if you had a 3D printer instead of a LEGO set when you were a kid; what would life be like now?” asks Mr. Pettis. You could print your own mini-figures, your own blocks, and you could iterate on new designs as quickly as your imagination would allow. MakerBots are now in over 5,000 K-12 schools across the United States. Taking this one step further, you could imagine having a 3D file for most entries in Wikipedia, allowing you to print out and study an object you can only read about or visualize in VR.

Tech 3: Sensors & Networks. An explosion of sensors and networks are going to connect everyone at gigabit speeds, making access to rich video available at all times. At the same time, sensors continue to miniaturize and reduce in power, becoming embedded in everything. One benefit will be the connection of sensor data with machine learning and AI (below), such that knowledge of a child’s attention drifting, or confusion, can be easily measured and communicated. The result would be a representation of the information through an alternate modality or at a different speed.

Tech 4: Machine Learning is making learning adaptive and personalized. No two students are identical — they have different modes of learning (by reading, seeing, hearing, doing), come from different educational backgrounds, and have different intellectual capabilities and attention spans. Advances in machine learning and the surging adaptive learning movement are seeking to solve this problem. Companies like Knewton and Dreambox have over 15 million students on their respective adaptive learning platforms. Soon, every education application will be adaptive, learning how to personalize the lesson for a specific student. There will be adaptive quizzing apps, flashcard apps, textbook apps, simulation apps and many more.

Tech 5: Artificial Intelligence or “An AI Teaching Companion.” Neil Stephenson's book "The Diamond Age" presents a fascinating piece of educational technology called "A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer."

As described by Beat Schwendimann, “The primer is an interactive book that can answer a learner's questions (spoken in natural language), teach through allegories that incorporate elements of the learner's environment, and presents contextual just-in-time information.

“The primer includes sensors that monitor the learner's actions and provide feedback. The learner is in a cognitive apprenticeship with the book: The primer models a certain skill (through allegorical fairy tale characters), which the learner then imitates in real life.

“The primer follows a learning progression with increasingly more complex tasks. The educational goals of the primer are humanist: To support the learner to become a strong and independently thinking person.”

The primer, an individualized AI teaching companion is the result of technological convergence and is beautifully described by YouTuber CGP Grey in his video: Digital Aristotle: Thoughts on the Future of Education.

Your AI companion will have unlimited access to information on the cloud and will deliver it at the optimal speed to each student in an engaging, fun way. This AI will demonetize and democratize education, be available to everyone for free (just like Google), and offering the best education to the wealthiest and poorest children on the planet equally.

This AI companion is not a tutor who spouts facts, figures and answers, but a player on the side of the student, there to help him or her learn, and in so doing, learn how to learn better. The AI is always alert, watching for signs of frustration and boredom that may precede quitting, for signs of curiosity or interest that tend to indicate active exploration, and for signs of enjoyment and mastery, which might indicate a successful learning experience.

Ultimately, we’re heading towards a vastly more educated world. We are truly living during the most exciting time to be alive.
