My wife Linda and I have been blessed with three amazing children. Right from birth, children go through massive changes – physically, socially, mentally and more. As a chiropractor my role is to support a child during these formative years by monitoring normal spinal growth and development.
Children have been part of the regular practice of chiropractic since before 1910(1), and today, more and more parents are using chiropractors as part of their family's health care team than ever before.(1,2,3, 4,5,6, 7, 8)
Our goal here at The Healthstyle Centre in Robina is to check your child's spine and nervous system for subluxation (areas of their spine with altered function), gently adjust them if necessary (this is not always needed, especially with kids!), and to inspire them to make healthier lifestyle choices.
Outdoors activity, lots of play, plenty of fresh fruit and veg, healthy meats, chicken and fish, good quality fats, and lots more play!
Is chiropractic care of children safe? In the grand scheme of things, when compared to many other healthcare interventions for children, yes chiropractic is considered a low risk intervention.
In 2011 my good friend and chiropractor, Dr. Matthew Doyle had a paper published in the peer reviewed journal Clinical Chiropractic on this topic. The paper reported that approximately 1 per 100 children who visit a chiropractor will get some mild adverse effects – this means some increases in irritability or soreness which last less than 24 hours before resolving.(9)
No serious adverse events have been reported in the literature since 1992 = over 30 years!
Over the years an increasing number of review articles and original research has been published on the safety of chiropractic care for babies, infants, and children.(10,11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17). In one of those reviews, the authors concluded the relative risk of having a minor or moderate adverse event after high velocity thrust spinal manipulation was significantly less than taking the medication often prescribed for these conditions.
The techniques we use for infants and children are very gentle and do not include high velocity thrust techniques. Common techniques are cranio-sacral work, touch and hold, myofascial release, and low impulse thrust techniques. These techniques have been refined from the good basis taught within internationally accredited chiropractic university programs, and expanded with many post graduate technique and science seminars.
