Globalization: Friend to Advertisers but Foe to Consumers?

The continuing globalization in the media illustrates an intersection between both cultural and economical aspects of our world both physically and virtually. Globalization has changed the way we form communities by being able to communicate and interact with others on a global level through numerous platforms. It has not only promoted growth of companies but created new economies for these business to thrive. From a broad perspective, globalization has created endless opportunities for the emergence of new communities and expanding businesses but there comes the question of if globalization is just a way for the media to control the way we think and even act.

New genres of social media have surfaced from globalization while advertisers and marketers continue to benefit from the increasing platforms that companies can use to reach out to their consumers. Some genres of social media that advertisers have utilized to promote their service or products are "blogs, wikis, media sharing sites, social networking sites, social bookmarking, virtual worlds, microblogging, etc" (Boyd, 2009). As these platforms increased popularity, the effects of globalization allowed us to "constantly iterate the technology people interacted with and learned from what they were doing" (Boyd, 2009). There was a major demand for these platforms and the popularity of these platforms attracted advertisers to invest in using them as well.

One of the most successful outcomes of the globalization of technology through the media was the emergence of user-generated content. User generated content is probably one of advertisers best friends because it simply is free marketing that the consumer makes for their product or service. An example of a successful user generated content is Starbuck's "White Cup Contest." This was an smart marketing tool by Starbucks by creating a simple and fun campaign for their customers to take part in. Starbucks is an international company so they were able to reach out and encourage consumers from all over the world to participate in this campaign while ultimately promoting the Starbucks brand. "Starbucks associates its brand with a creative, innovative, and artistic space and customer base...they observed what their customers were doing...and ran with a concept inspired by their customers." This is a quote defining how Starbucks view themselves as a brand; this "White Cup Contest" reinforced those values by encouraging their costumers to take part in this challenge. They were able to take this tool (generated user content) and use it to create a community that connected strangers together with the shared interest of Starbucks.

In this case of user generated content, both the producer and the consumer benefitted from the experience but it does not always play out that way. Danah Boyd believes that we are living in a culture of fear where, "fear is employed by marketers, politicians, technology designers and the media to regulate the public and shape their world views." Focusing on advertising, advertisers use fear as a tool of control over consumers and many times the consumers are oblivious to this mechanism or get trapped into it. Globalization in the media created more regulations on media and who and how it is distributed to. There are endless communities online and advertisers cater to these specific audiences by only putting forth ads or information that these communities will find beneficial to their own beliefs and values therefore increasing the chance that these communities will buy their products or participate in their services. In these communities fear is created by showing the value of their product. In the society we live in, people are are attracted to products that are adopted by others. Advertisers try to reel us in with flashy headlines or creative images to gain our attention. This all relates to the idea of the attention economy, the value of something is determined by how much attention it receives (Boyd, 2012). "The importance of advertisements is predicated on the notion that getting people to pay attention to something has value" (Boyd, 2012).

From a similar standpoint, Marwick believes that, "social media is a neoliberal technology of subjectivity that produces social status as the ultimate commodity" (MacAulay, 2015). We are "hyper-vigilant" about how other view us online which gives individuals a sense of value. Through marketing and advertising, we can relate to ourselves and to others by comparison (MacAulay, 2015). The globalization of the media allowed for these status affordances to occur which generates fear of not fitting in ultimately leading those to consume that certain product or service all for the profit of those businesses.

Advertisers are appealing to our desire for community, intimacy and social connection while promoting these commodities as emotional nourishment. From a globalization standpoint, "since the media has become commodified, and the purpose of a commodity is to extract as much profit as possible, the media can no longer be considered the guardian of the public good" (Boyle, Chandan, Hardenbergh, Hedley, Rio, 2008). We are living in a filter bubble where search engines are controlling what we view by only showing information that cater to our interests. For advertising this is monumental but in terms of the democracy and the global village we are reinforced of our values and controlled of what we view.
