Tonight the English government has announced a full national lockdown from Thursday. I was reading all of your posts before and you said there would be a possibility of another lockdown from 20th of November and maybe another one end of December going into a new year. My question is how long are we keep going through this. We are rather fatigued of all of this. Thank you.
Tumblr media
I did see that last night when I saw the front pages of the UK tabs on tumblr.
I haven’t been following when the uptick of cases in the UK began to get bad recently, so I might not be 100% right on this but I’ll just type out my thoughts on it anyway.
Tumblr media
04 October 2020: Mars retrograded back into Pisces. This would be significant for the UK’s chart because with Saturn in Capricorn, the UK’s 6th house becomes hemmed in by malefics. Essentially a papa kartari yoga by transit is happening, which makes it more difficult for the house that is hemmed in. In this instance the 6th house of the UK is affected. The 6th house is the house of health; hence, the health of the nation is affected. [All of these positions are sidereal zodiac by the way, not tropical/western zodiac.] Think of papa kartari yoga as being stuck between a rock and a hard place. Also, Mars is aspecting the UK's natal Moon via it's 4th/square aspect from now until the end of December. Mars is a tough planet for Virgo ascendants since it rules the 8th house.
13 October 2020 to 03 November 2020: Mercury goes retrograde in Libra. Mercury is indicative of respiratory diseases; Libra is an air sign. Mercury has retrograde in air signs this year (Aquarius, Gemini, Libra). I’ve noticed the US has started to have an uptick in cases--okay, biggest uptick this year--since Mercury has gone retrograde.
The UK’s 4th house (Sagittarius) and 4th lord (Jupiter) are also in a papa kartari yoga, but that will continue for longer. Although, that does get nullified for about a month from 10 December to 03 January 2021 when Venus is in Scorpio and Jupiter is in Capricorn. The 4th house represents what some people would refer to as “the homeland” for a country’s chart. There is plenty of other astrological action happening in December, so I still expect things to be crazy that month anyway.
Tumblr media
13 November 2020: Mars goes stationary direct. Mars finishes its retrograde that started in September. Mars being the planet associated with violence always triggers something when it stations and goes direct (at 21:05 Pisces/Revati nakshatra). Mars will be stationing very close to the UK’s natal Rahu/north node of the Moon. Given that the UK is running a Rahu maha dasha/time period, it could be significant in some way. Pisces is the 7th house of partnerships, so this just may be indicating that Brexit is close to happening. Anyhow, always do your best to stay calm and not get into unnecessary fights when Mars is close to the earth, which would be now and until a couple days after the 13th when Mars moves at a more normal pace.
20 November 2020: Jupiter moves into Capricorn, where it is debilitated. Jupiter will have its conjunction with Saturn in Capricorn on the winter solstice, 21 December. I expect further cratering of the US economy when Jupiter moves into Capricorn about this time.
16 November 2020 to 28 December 2020: Eclipse season. Remember when George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police in the USA and then massive protests broke out? That happened shortly after the eclipse "season" started around late May of this year. Eclipse "season" is two weeks before and after any eclipse. There is a lunar eclipse in Taurus on 30 November, and a total solar eclipse on 14 December. This eclipse season is going to be worse than the one we had this summer. Hard to say exactly how bad it will be, but I do expect various degrees of upheaval and fear all over due to societal collapse induced by the pandemic.
21 December 2020: The Jupiter-Saturn conjunction at 06:21 Capricorn/Uttara Ashadha nakshatra. One of the biggest drivers of the year. The Jupiter-Saturn conjunction happens approximately every 19 to 21 years. What makes this one so significant is that it is happening very close to Jupiter's maximum debilitation point. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer but debilitated in Capricorn. Jupiter's maximum exaltation at 5 degrees of Cancer, and its maximum debilitation is at 5 degrees of Capricorn. Exaltation means that the planet is at its highest & best qualities at that point. When debilitated it means that the planet is deficient of its higher qualities.
So what are Jupiter's highest qualities? Jupiter is the planet associated with wisdom, spiritual knowledge, philosophy, law, religion, and dharma. Saturn is the planet of time, longevity, the common man, isolation, adversity, limitations, delay, setbacks, and karma. Saturn is also associated with fear. Dharma is often interpreted as "rightful purpose," but you can also think of it as consciousness. The type of consciousness that Yoda would describe as when you are calm and at peace. As we get closer to the conjunction on 21 December, this means that the calm and peace of dharma is gradually diminishing until the conjunction. It'll start getting better after the conjunction, slowly.
And as I'm sure you've already noticed, this conjunction with the decrease in dharma is happening during an eclipse season, which tends toward craziness in general. Calm and peace will be in short supply while fear will be running rampant, regardless of whether or not it is warranted or not. I've had in my mind that from at least now until the beginning of January is "The Long Night" period. Kind of cheesy to phrase it like that since it is a Game of Thrones reference, but I think it helps clarify that it's just a crazy time period we're all going to have to get through in some way or form. It sucks but this too shall pass. Just not as quickly as we all would like.
Tumblr media
24 December 2020: Mars moves out of Pisces into Aries. This ends the papa kartari yoga on Aquarius and the UK's 6th house. Things should start getting better after that. We will all still be stuck in the crazy eclipse season until after 28 December. New Years will likely be better than Christmas. This also ends the Mars aspect to the UK's natal Moon. Moon represents the public, so I would think people would begin feeling better at this point. Maybe everything isn't perfectly 100% okay by that point, but things would begin looking better.
As I mentioned previously, there is a version of Kal Sarpa yoga happening with the planets from January until early April 2021. Hopefully things won't be as bad at that point, like, hopefully only half crazy instead of full crazy. Also, Jupiter & Rahu will be casting their trine aspect to the same (earth) signs from November until April 2021--Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo. This Jupiter & Rahu trine aspect tends to be expansive--since they are both planets that tend to indicate large & expansiveness--and generally is considered positive. For the UK, this would affect the 1st, 5th, and 9th houses, aka all the dharma houses.
Personally, I'm looking forward to 05 April 2021 when Jupiter moves into Aquarius. I think that'll be the point in time when we'll all finally breathe a sigh of relief about this mess. Things will get better in 2021 in general. Next year won’t be as terrible as this year.

Author Interview with Junauda Petrus
There are two Black queer girls from two different Black cultures in this book falling in love.  What was it like writing a Caribbean and Black American protagonist?
As a first generation Caribbean-American author, I got to connect with the spectrum and multitudes of Blackness that shaped me through writing this book. Audre and Mabel represent aspects of who I am as a Black women who was raised in multiple Black cultures. My mother is Trinidadian and my father is from St. Croix, and I was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I loved writing these girls, because they represented parts of me and the Black diaspora in a way that was eclectic, vibrant and healing.
In writing Audre and Mabel, I wanted to show them falling in love with a Black girl, that was a reflection of them, but also unique and magical in a way all her own. Their love is one that I longed to read as a young person. One that centered weird Black girls in a romantic love.
You traveled to Trinidad and Tobago to interview folks who are LGBTQIA on these islands. How did that research affect the story?
I wanted to depict with love, curiosity and expansiveness the experience of being queer in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T). There are a lot of assumptions in the mainstream about the backwardness of attitudes towards LGBTQIA folks in the Caribbean region, and this isn’t the only truth. There is also the notion that folks in the U.S. are inherently more progressive and this is not the case. I learned from activists in T&T, that colonialism and religious evangelism from the west has fostered a lot of the homophobic sentiments that persist in the region.
I traveled to T&T to interview artists, students, activists, government employees, queer party organizers, etc to get their perspective on queer life in T&T. It was a true gift to hear Trinibagoans talk about their queerness and speak to the ways that they live out loud despite bigotry and ignorance about who they are. There were stories of people being exiled from family, as well as others who were embraced and accepted for their queerness. On a personal note, I traveled there with my wife, and was grateful for how we were embraced by my Trinidadian relatives in ways that was affirming and healing.
Tumblr media
Ancestral spirituality, astrology and natural healing are all themes in this book. Why were these themes important for you to include in this book?
With Audre and Mabel, I wanted them to explore relationships with the divine and the sacred that helped them navigate the world and challenges they were up against. As a young person, I loved anything that was mystical and otherworldly, things that seemed connected to intuition and spirit. I wanted these Black girls to be spiritual seekers in a way that empowered and blossomed them. They have to deal with some heavy and difficult realities that required spiritual skill sets that were ancestral, organic and cosmic. I have always loved astrology and love the ways that it has helped me see other realities within myself. The character of Queenie, Audre’s grandmother, represents how Black people can be spiritual in a way that is shaped out of intuition and deep listening.
Who are the authors who inspired you in writing this book?
As an 11 year-old, I found a book called The Friends, written by Rosa Guy and it was the first book that centered a Black Caribbean girl as the protagonist, and I felt I could relate to. I had always been an avid reader but reading Black women authors in my teen years is what made me want to write and process who I was on the page. I read a lot of Maya Angelou, Octavia Butler and Jamaica Kincaid. I am deeply influenced by poeticism and lyricism from writers like Ntozake Shange and Nikki Giovanni. I fell in love with Alice Walker and the way she wrote Black women’s interiors in a way that was beautiful, sensual, and complex. Toni Morrison, who has just passed and is a literary goddess AND genius, taught me how to be unapologetically experimental and otherworldly. She showed how you could write Black life, while making it accessible in its mundane and honesty of who we are. I have discovered, Alexis DeVeaux and Sharon Bridgforth, in my later years who are mentors of mine and have helped me feel affirmed in writing Black queer stories.
The relationship between Whitney Houston and her best friend Robyn Crawford is a major theme in this book. What inspired that theme?
In this book Whitney Houston represents invisible queerness within Black memory as well as the greater culture. A couple months into writing the book, her legacy unlocked a dimension of the book that was needed for me to understand the erasure of queerness within Black life and memory.
When I was growing up in the 1980s I idolized Whitney Houston. She was beautiful, elegant and had a voice and presence that was bewitching. She was one of the Black celebrity icons that took the grit and gospel of Black life, and made it into an expansive and tender world for the mainstream. I didn’t learn until 2006 when I was in my twenties living in New York City about Whitney and her long-time best friend, Robyn and how central a figure she was to Houston’s life and career. Learning about this bond that was deep and most likely romantic, made Whitney make more sense to me. I loved re-imagining them in ways for this book that wasn’t tinged with stigma and controversy, but instead love and sweetness.

YA Book Review: The Stars and the Blackness between Them
Tumblr media
Title: The Stars and the Blackness between Them
Author: Junauda Petrus
Genre: YA magical realism
Publisher: Dutton Books for Young Readers
Release date: 9/17/19
From the publisher: Trinidad. Sixteen-year-old Audre is despondent, having just found out she’s going to be sent to live in America with her father because her strictly religious mother caught her with her secret girlfriend, the pastor’s daughter. Audre’s grandmother Queenie (a former dancer who drives a white convertible Cadillac and who has a few secrets of her own) tries to reassure her granddaughter that she won’t lose her roots, not even in some place called Minneapolis. “America have dey spirits too, believe me,” she tells Audre. Minneapolis. Sixteen-year-old Mabel is lying on her bed, staring at the ceiling and trying to figure out why she feels the way she feels–about her ex Terrell, about her girl Jada and that moment they had in the woods, and about the vague feeling of illness that’s plagued her all summer. Mabel’s reverie is cut short when her father announces that his best friend and his just-arrived-from-Trinidad daughter are coming for dinner. Mabel quickly falls hard for Audre and is determined to take care of her as she tries to navigate an American high school. But their romance takes a turn when test results reveal exactly why Mabel has been feeling low-key sick all summer and suddenly it’s Audre who is caring for Mabel as she faces a deeply uncertain future.
Review: This is, hands down, one of the most interesting, original YA books I’ve ever read. I’m incredibly glad I got the chance to read it, and I’m a bit at a loss as to how to describe it. There are a lot of different threads here, all of them working together to illustrate interconnectedness, the link between people, between the past and the present, between the body and the spirit. It’s a spiritual book, rooted in both New Age and historical Black sensibilities. This spirituality is so deeply felt that you don’t have to believe in things like astrology (which features heavily) in order to be moved.
The story is mainly character- and theme-focused, and it moves with the zodiac seasons, jumping from Aries to Taurus to Gemini and so forth. Occasionally, these gaps in time feel a bit like a stutter; sometimes characters will forge relationships “off-screen,” so to speak, and I found myself wishing that I could’ve seen more of their interactions, especially when it came to Audre and her father. But Mabel and Audre’s voices and inner lives develop so steadily and realistically that it’s easy to forgive the book’s minor flaws. The larger time jumps - or time mergings, perhaps, the weaving together of the protagonists’, Queenie’s, and Aufa’s youths - are handled deftly and were perhaps my favorite part of the book. So many threads, all of them coming together in a way that reinforces a theme of solidarity and transcendence.
One thing that I really appreciate about a lot of children’s/YA books I’ve read this year is the kindness that permeates them. This is a book about love, and it’s a book that loves. It loves its characters and treats them with the respect they deserve. The narrative never punishes them for forging strong bonds with one another or for standing up for what they believe - their love, hope, and spirituality are portrayed as powerful rather than naive. They struggle, but they ultimately maintain their dignity. Please, please read this book.
Final verdict: highly recommended

Meet the New Class!
It is our pleasure to announce the 17 writers who will join our UNLV community this coming Fall 2019 semester! Congratulations to everyone, and welcome to Vegas!
PHD/BLACK MOUNTAIN INSTITUTE FELLOWS
Tumblr media
Robert Ren is a writer and teacher in New York. He has a BA from the University of Chicago and an MFA from Columbia University. Having escaped a corporate career, he currently tutors kids in standardized test prep. He managed to avoid the whole college admissions scandal, but that's only because his photoshop skills are terrible.
Dorothy Solomon (not pictured)
MFA Fiction
Tumblr media
Bronwyn Scott-McCharen was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi and graduated from Hendrix College in 2014 with a degree in Sociology and Anthropology. She then lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina for three years, where she immersed herself in the country's vibrant political culture under the guise of academic research. Her interests outside of writing fiction include travel, photography, international politics and history (especially Cold War history). She is currently hard at work on two novels in distinct stages of development--one completed manuscript in need of polish and another in the earliest phase of drafting and intensive research. She speaks Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese and hopes to soon add Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian to her budding repertoire of languages.
Tumblr media
Mir Arif developed the idea of storytelling at an early age from strangers—astrologers, street magicians, herbal medicine sellers and other con-artists—frequenting the quiet alleys of his childhood neighborhood in Comilla, a small town in southern Bangladesh. He graduated from University of Dhaka with a degree in International Relations and worked as a staff writer for Arts & Letters. His short stories have appeared in various magazines and e-zines in the US, Singapore, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. One of his short stories was longlisted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2019. He likes to hike and spend time with parakeets.
Tumblr media
Karen Gu's fiction has appeared in Paper Darts and The Margins and is forthcoming in McSweeney's Quarterly. She has been awarded fellowships from Kundiman, the Jack Jones Literary Arts Retreat, and the Loft Literary Center. After five years in Chicago and four years in Minneapolis, she is looking forward to the desert.
Tumblr media
Mohammed Jahama often introduces himself as Mo. He likes to write about those kinds of borderland identities and to talk about words. And is excited and grateful for the opportunity to do such things at UNLV.
Tumblr media
Sylvia Fox has too many interests and a wandering soul, which is why she writes fiction. Most recently, she spent the last two years in Baltimore, MD, surrounded and inspired by artists. So many aspects of her identity have led her to believe in the subversive power of showing up, taking up space, and creating space for others. She looks forward to continuing to explore this in writing and in community with others.
MFA Poetry
Tumblr media
Nick Barnette, an Alabama native, attended Texas Christian University where he received a BA in English and BS in Film-Television-and-Digital Media. Upon graduation, Nick received a Fulbright Fellowship to Greece where he taught ESL in an elementary school in Athens.
Tumblr media
Sarah Spaulding is a Tennessee native and a lover of the mountains that raised her. She graduated summa cum laude with her BA in psychology and English with an emphasis in creative writing from Carson-Newman University. There she discovered her penchant for digging around in people’s heads. She often writes poems to dig herself out of her own head. Her work appears in Tennessee’s Best Emerging Poets, Aletheia, Ampersand, The Sigma Tau Delta Rectangle, and soon-to-be a guide to Southwestern Iceland. When she’s not busy exploring the mire of humanity, Sarah enjoys dancing in the sunshine, petting other people’s dogs, and helping her father type his memoir.
Tumblr media
Jo O’Lone-Hahn is from rural Pennsylvania, and is now on her way to Las Vegas, continuing on her lifelong mission to see the world. She has a B.A. in poetry, studio art, and religious studies from Hampshire College. She writes poems that focus on misunderstood people, naiveté, and the imagination inherent in remembering. Jo has held jobs such as: social worker, tattoo-shop-front-desk-chick, archivist, and tarot-reader-on-the-streets. She is also a member of the Departure Collective, a literary group which conducts workshops, organizes poetry readings, and creates chapbooks. When she’s not writing, she makes mixed-media artworks, wanders around, and befriends grumpy old men.
Tumblr media
Nicholas Gruber is a native of Wisconsin, where he earned a BA in Economics from UW-Milwaukee. He is an emerging poet, and--hand to God--a human.
Tumblr media
Kathryn McKenzie is a Las Vegas native with a BA in English. She drinks enough tea to match the annual consumption of the entire country of Ireland, and prefers snuggling up in her reading chair with a book, toast, and tea to almost anything in the world. Beyond her deep love of poetry and literature, her passions include: asking to pet every dog she sees, cracking her back after standing up in the movie theater, planning Halloween costumes years in advance, and talking about all the parties she is going to throw, but never actually throwing them. Her poetry has appeared in Neon Dreams and Unincorporated, and her interest in publishing has led her to work with Interim, Witness, and Helen: a literary magazine.
MFA Nonfiction
Tumblr media
Christina Berke is a Libra and a teacher from Los Angeles.
Tumblr media
Jordon Smith, raised among the Tetons in Wyoming, is a nonfiction writer who enjoys the pleasures and curiosities of the natural world. She completed her undergraduate degree at Utah State University where she met her husband. After graduating, she and her husband moved to Oklahoma where they welcomed a baby boy. Jordon discovered a love of distance running during her time in Oklahoma and is currently training for a marathon in July. When she is not running, she is working in the public library, taking long car rides, or watching children's television shows.
Tumblr media
At first look, Soni Brown's life is a series of parodies. She is an immigrant who planned and spent her first vacation in Dubuque, Iowa in January; a former flight attendant afraid of heights and a classically trained chef who prefers Stouffer's frozen meals. As a nonfiction writer, Soni uses her journalism training to write about women, immigrants, and the vagaries of life. A wife and mom since 2016, she is constantly trying to have it all especially a partner who picks up after himself. At the end of the world, you will find Soni nursing a tumbler of herby gin while recounting the year she spent in Brooklyn with Jay-Z. So what if he doesn't know her.
Tumblr media
Alyse Burnside: I am a writer and educator currently living in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I received by B.A in English and Gender Studies from the University of Iowa. While I consider myself primarily an essayist, I am interested in working between the confines of genre, combining poetry, narrative, and speculative nonfiction. I am currently working on a collage project of interviews with spiritualists, metaphysical myth, and the neuroscience behind how one creates their own reality. When I’m not writing or working, I am reading, traveling, or watching reality T.V. I am thrilled to be attending UNLV in the fall and am excited to meet the desert for the very first time.

Tag Game
Rules: Tag 20 people you’d like to get to know better.
@just-add-butter tagged me. I was super late to do this. Sorry, love.
Nickname: Em from friends and family. Ryan calls me a million different things but kitten is the sweetest. Goofiest is probably “Salt Pig” and most obscure is “Soulful Wonder Lady”
Gender: Female
Astrological sign: Gemini
Height: 5′ 3′’
Sexuality: Bisexual and still working out the details.
Hogwarts House: Last time I checked was Gryffindor
Favorite Animals: I’m a huge dog fav. But honestly if something is fluffy and can make cute faces, I'm probably on board.
Number of Blankets: I’m one of those people who needs AT LEAST a sheet even if it’s sweltering. Currently we have a sheet and our duvet cause it’s still chilly in Chicago.
Where I am From: Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, currently live in the city of Chicago, previously lived in Minneapolis for 5 years
Dream Trip: Currently craving Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge. But I’m dying to go to Japan to see @bumbercrotch, Canada to see @supersoldiersruined-me, plus I wanna go back to Spain or to Italy.
When I Created This Account: Sometime in 2011 I believe. It was my senior year of high school and I’m about to turn 26.
Why I Created This Account: one of my best friends (who I'm still friends with) had one and told me to try it out. I remember hating it the first month cause I didn’t understand how to work it and I had zero html skills. Now I'll be on this hell site until I die.
Followers: 1,018...which is shocking to me. I just hit 1K a week ago and had to do a double take.
Tagging: half asleep now...will tag in the morning.

90: One night you wake up because you heard a noise. You turn on the light to find that you are surrounded by MUMMIES. The mummies aren’t really doing anything, they’re just standing around your bed. What do you do? Ask if they can talk. If they can’t and are just looming, try to get back to sleep.
91: You accidentally eat some radioactive vegetables. They were good, and what’s even cooler is that they endow you with the super-power of your choice! What is that power? Control time
92: You can re-live any point of time in your life. The time-span can only be a half-hour, though. What half-hour of your past would you like to experience again? Oh this is a good question. That last 30 minutes of the Jan. 2012 BronyCon where I modded the stream and heard “You Only Got One Life to Live”

97: Have you ever thrown up in the car? Nah
98: Ever been on a plane? Yep
99: If the whole world were listening to you right now, what would you say? It’s...it’s not easy anymore. And I know I make a lot of mistakes and whine a lot and am in no position to hate who I am or what I’ve done and I know that I don’t deserve everything I’ve gotten, but...it’s hard to want to live life and enjoy little things when you’ve been told that you’re great at a lot of things and end up never getting there because you didn’t put enough work in or you weren’t lucky enough to get it. And then you’ve got this great big old dream looming over you that you can escape in because it’s so much to imagine what it would be like. But you know that deep down you’ll end up back home working at Menards and ending up just like your father. Well guess what? If I’ll never be shit, duck? Than I’d least like to fucking know if I ever had a chance in the first place.
