Where to Eat the Tastiest Street Food in London
London is often associated with high-end restaurants and posh eateries helmed by celebrity chefs. However, the English capital also has an exciting culture of street food through its long-stay markets and pop-up food courts. Furthermore, London has an exciting food scene that encompasses British, European and international cuisine. Find out what and where to experience the best of street food close to Central London hotels.
Southbank Centre Food Market
Open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the Southbank Centre Food Market is a convenient choice for tourists. It’s moments from the London Eye and Royal Festival Hall.
Stalls represent British classics such as scotch eggs, sausage rolls, and Cornish pasties. However, there is an excellent variety of global fare including Japanese-style poke bowls, Korean barbecue, Polish sausages, Dutch pancakes, Greek souvlaki, North American sandwiches, and Portuguese custard tarts.
The drinks offering is equally broad, with options ranging from bubble tea and hot chocolate to West Country cider and European craft beers.
Mercato Mayfair Food Hall
Convenient for those staying at hotels near Paddington Station, Mercato Mayfair Food Hall is one of the most unusual places to go for street food in London.
Housed inside a deconsecrated church, the building is appointed with original stained glass windows, vaulted ceilings, and an altar. Spread over two floors, the venue has stalls serving worldwide cuisine, a rooftop terrace, and an atmospheric wine cellar in the crypt.
Food on sale includes pad Thai, lobsters, homemade pasta, ramen, grilled meat, and Malaysian street food with an emphasis on sustainable practices.
Vinegar Yard
Next to London Bridge Station, Vinegar Yard brings together food, drinks, art, and a weekend flea market.
Food is available daily with the offering changing seasonally. In general, you can anticipate such options as Asian street food, burgers inspired by Indian recipes, and Neo-Neapolitan pizzas.
Draught beer sourced from local breweries is rotated frequently while cocktails reflect the season.
Pergola Paddington
Guests staying at hotels near Paddington Station should pay a visit to Pergola. This is a rooftop bar with a street market atmosphere.
Food on the menu includes ciabatta sandwiches, hot chicken, loaded fries, duck pancakes, bao, and dumplings. The offering includes main plates and platters, perfect for sharing or experimenting with different flavours. The popular venue has scores of tables making it a wonderful option if you plan on making an afternoon or evening of it.
Tipples inspired by the seasons include classic cocktails and spritzes with plenty of options for those who do not drink alcohol.
Borough Market
Borough Market is the most famous spot for street food in London. This Thameside market springs to life early each morning with vendors selling fresh produce, pantry items, regional cheese, artisan coffee, and street bites.
Typical dishes cooked at the covered market include Spanish paella, rock oysters from Essex, gourmet sausage rolls, curries from South Asia and Southeast Asia, and traditional apple crumble.
There are several bars where you can sit down with an ale or glass of wine. In fact, these are the perfect destination for a date night while staying at Central London hotels.

The Best Day Trips from London
Tumblr media
London is the place where you will find endless cultural clashes and mixed cuisines, family friendly and more adult attractions, museums, galleries, and a whole host of experiences which range from the traditional to the unique and memorable.
But when it comes to planning the best London visit, sometimes it pays to look at experiences which take you further afield than the London West End hotel deals, restaurants across the West End of London, and the famous attractions in the centre of the city.
In this blog, we spotlight just some of the best day trips from London, starting from The Piccadilly London West End and taking you across the UK in all directions.
A Beach Day
Some of the best beaches in England can be enjoyed as part of a day trip from London, ranging from the coast of Kent to the Essex marshes, Southend-on-Sea with its pier attractions, and even the South Coast from Brighton to Eastbourne and across to the New Forest.
To reach these beaches, you can hop on a train from one of London’s many stations, or you can hire a car and drive yourself there. And if you decide to extend your trip, all of the top coastal locations house a number of hotels and B&Bs.
Traditional Britain
Britain is synonymous with rolling countryside, with quaint cottages, with the Royal Family, and with dining experiences which range from cream tea to afternoon tea and picnics in the parks. While in London you can find all manner of variations on these British classics, including an Indian infused afternoon tea in London and afternoon tea on the go atop an open top bus, when you visit sleepy English villages, you can immerse yourself in British tradition.
A great way to enjoy this is through visiting a National Trust site and café, by heading to the classic seaside locations of Brighton and Eastbourne, and by booking lunch or dinner in a British pub.
Theme Parks
What better way to spend a day outside of London than by visiting one of the UK’s leading theme parks – and in this category, there really is something for everyone. Paultons Park down on the South Coast is the ideal site for families with younger children, while Thorpe Park and Alton Towers are both known for these thrilling rides and looping roller coasters.
Harry Potter Studios
One of the most famous fictional characters of all time, for those who love Harry Potter a quick train ride from central London will bring you to the Harry Potter studios site in Watford – where you can wander the sets and find out more about the movies and how they were brought to life.
Stately Homes and Gardens
You don’t have to travel far from London to find yourself in the surroundings of a beautiful country village – with a wide selection of stately homes and formal gardens all open for day visitors to enjoy as you wish. Simply research an area of the country that you want to visit and you’ll find a site to visit and spend a day outside.

Chapter 1 : I'm fallin' so I'm takin' my time on my ride
“Vicky you shouldn’t drive home so late.”
Victoria sighs as she climbs down the few stairs from her parents’ house down to the garden, her mother following her close. It’s dark and the motion detector activates the outdoor light, making the little path leading to where she parked her car more visible.
“Stay for the night at least, you can leave early.” Her mother insists, arms crossed upon her chest to protect herself from the cold.
“I can’t mom.” She unlocks her car, throwing her bag on the passenger seat before turning around and leaning against the door. “I have to open the shop tomorrow and I don’t want to be late if there’s too many people on the road.”
“That’s not safe, Vicky.”
“Come on, mom, it’s not the first time I’m driving during the night.” She exhales, sitting in the car and starting it. “I’ll text you when I’m home.” She smiles, ignoring her mother’s eye roll and closing the door.
She slowly drives away from her parents' house, an old house lost in the middle of Essex. Her mother wasn't wrong about the risk of driving during the night on country roads, but Vicky took this road so many times, she's not really worried. She turns on the radio and turns the sound up when she recognizes the melody of Ride by Twenty one Pilots. Her fingers tap the steering wheel in rhythm with the drum, her head nodding regularly. She knows that song by heart and can't resist singing the lyrics as she drives in the direction of London.
After half an hour of driving, a heavy rain is now falling, Vicky starts to regret not having listened to her mother. She woke up early this morning to be in time for the family lunch her parents have been harassing her about for a month. She yawns, her hand passing through her blond hair as she drives on a small quite deserted road. She tries to turn up the music louder to not fall asleep, but inevitably, her head starts to nod and her eyelids grow heavier. She closes her eyes, just one second, but when she opens them again, she’s blinded by the headlights of another car in front of her. Panicked, she hits the brake with all her strength, a slew of insults escaping her lips. The person in the vehicle in front seems to do the same and swerves. But inevitably, the two cars meet and the shock makes Vicky’s head hit the steering wheel violently.
For a long moment, it’s just darkness and silence and Victoria finds it awkwardly peaceful. She feels weak and out of her body, the strangest feeling she has ever felt. She can’t tell how long she’s been that way but suddenly it vanishes. She’s overwhelmed by all her senses who awaken at the same time. She panics, the feeling of her heart beating resounding in her whole body and the air painfully filling her lungs. She abruptly opens her eyes, straightening until the back of her head hits the car seat.
It takes her a few minutes to calm her breath and to realize where she is, morning’s light blinding her. She’s still in her car, the windshield broken in a million pieces dispersed everywhere. She quickly notices the blood on the steering wheel and her clothes and immediately she brings her fingers to her forehead and indeed she finds fresh blood, but no wound. It should have reassured her, however it horrifies her. She tries to open the door and has to force it to finally leave the car. In the process, she falls on the floor and crawls to move away from the vehicle. The sleeves of her shirt are torn and stained with blood, but again, she’s perfectly healthy. Her confusion makes her sick and she leans on a side to throw up, her whole body shaking with a long thrill.
Once her stomach is emptied she starts to look around her, now that there’s daylight she is able to see the fields that expand as far as the eye can see. She’s alone on this road, with her car with smoke coming out of the hood and absolutely no sign of the other vehicle. She stands on her feet, her legs shaking, and walks a little further to see if there’s anyone.
“They fucking left me alone.” She grumbles as she realizes she really was utterly alone.
She walks back to her car and grabs her bag and jacket before searching her phone. When she finally has a hand on it, she sighs of relief. Though it doesn’t last long as she discovers how the screen is cracked.
“New car and new phone it is, then.” Victoria speaks to herself, more to try to stay calm than anything. Fortunately, it’s still working but she realises right after that there's no signal. “Obviously.”
She looks around her one last time before facing the facts, she has to walk back home. She fills her bag with the important papers stacked in her car before walking away. After a quarter hour of walking, she starts to recognize where she is and estimates she should arrive in a village in another quarter hour. This time alone gives her the occasion to try to understand what happened last night. She obviously got into a car accident and the other person involved let her on her own, didn't even try to search for help, it is morning now, in six hours at least, if they left to find help, they should have already been back. No, they left her on her own as if she was dead.
Victoria stops, the thought troubling her. She can't explain what she felt after the accident, she has already fainted a few times in her life, and it has never been like this before. But what is even more troubling, is that she's perfectly healthy, not even a scratch despite the blood she found on her clothes and in the car. Nothing is making sense.
She covers her face with both of her hands, then rubs her eyes as waking up from a bad dream. But she's still in the middle of a road, in the middle of nowhere.
“What the hell?!” She shouts, frustrated by so much incomprehension.
She continues to walk, she wipes the blood from her face before she reaches the village and puts her jacket on to hide the state of her clothes. She has no idea of what happened and she definitely doesn't want to have to explain it to anyone. She finishes her way home with public transports, and it's past midday when she arrives in London. She gets a few messages, from her boss and even more from her mother. She sends excuses to her boss with a lie and another lie to her mother, saying she fell asleep and forgot to text her before.
Once she's in her small flat, she rushes to the shower after throwing her clothes in the washer. She stays at least an hour under the water, her mind playing the past events over and over until she's upset again. When she steps out of the shower, she’s starving. So she grabs the first thing she finds in her fridge, which happens to be the leftovers of her lunch from two days ago. She tries to remain distracted, turning on the TV and starting an episode of Game of Thrones, her best friend Rebecca has been harassing for a month to start watching the show. And for a brief hour, she’s captivated by the Battle of Bastards, and by how good looking Kit Harrington is in armor.
The rest of the day is uneventful and when Rebecca visits her later in the afternoon Victoria hesitates to talk to her about her accident. But she’s pretty sure she’d simply think her completely crazy.
“Are you alright, Vicky?” Rebecca eventually asks when she hands her a cup of tea.
Victoria smiles kindly. “Yes.” She’s not used to lying to her best friend. They have known each other since middle school and she could count the number of times she lied to her on one hand, one being for her surprise birthday for her 18th birthday. “Why are you asking?”
She sits next to her friend on the couch, bringing her own cup of tea to her lips to blow on it. “I don’t know you’re very silent. And you said you weren’t feeling good this morning.”
“Oh… Well it was nothing, just felt nauseous.”
Rebecca narrows her dark eyes but doesn't push further. “How were your parents?” She asks, changing the subject, much to Vicky's pleasure.
“They were fine.” She takes a long sip of her tea. “They wondered if you'd like to come for dinner one day.”
Rebecca grins, her parents have always been pretty fond of her, even proposing her to join family events. It never bothered Victoria who was happy to have a friend with her. “Of course, I'll come. I just need a date.”
“I'll text you.”
Rebecca leaves after dinner and as soon as the door is closed Vicky falls into her bed, exhausted. She doesn't have time to overthink as usually when she tries to find sleep, she finds Morpheus' arms the moment she closes her eyes. But her sleep is far from being peaceful, her dreams bringing her sometime in the Middle Age, judging by the clothes of the men surrounding her. She's in the middle of a fight opposing warriors with long hair and tattooed faces and others with more modest appearance, only a fire alighting the area. She looks around her, trying to understand the scene, but her vision is almost constantly brought back to one of the warriors. It's a tall man, wearing leather armor above a greenish tunic, with dark hair and beard. He is using his sword with such ability, his movements swift and precise, Vicky can't help but be impressed. From the corner of her eyes she can see men falling and how trees seem to delimit a clearing. She looks up to the sky and can see the stars shining in the sky, never before she has seen them so clearly. Then, a sound catches her attention and she's staring at the warrior again. He is not fighting anymore, frozen and his face twisting into a grimace. She looks down to his abdomen in sync with him and she gasps as she sees the sword coming out of his belly. And it's like she can feel all his pain as the sword leaves his body, her guts tearing apart. The man coughs blood, falling on his knees, his hands pressed on the gaping hole in his abdomen. He finishes his fall, head first in the mud and Victoria can feel the life leaving his body as the man takes his last breaths, his brown eyes looking into the void.
Victoria wakes up abruptly, sweating and panting. She presses a hand on her chest, desperately trying to calm her breath. Once she's calmed she pours herself a cup of water, still haunted by the sensation of her dream or maybe nightmare. She doesn't find sleep after that, so she just lies on her couch, watching TV, until morning comes and the hour she has to leave for work.
It's only the first night of a dozen as sleepless. Most of the time, she finds herself in the Middle Age, in various places, some faces regularly appearing. Sometimes she's in other periods, even in modern days. But the common point to all her dreams is this man. Each time she can see him more clearly, his thick hair is most of the time cut short around his ears, a scar slashing his forehead while two small others are ornamenting his left cheekbone. One day, she decides to draw him, she spends the afternoon on it, but she's determined to make it as realistic as possible. As the lines darken the paper, she realizes how the man reminds her of someone. She sends the drawing to Rebecca without much explanation and she immediately replies to her that he reminds her of the guy from the conspiracy theory video they watched one late night.
Victoria takes the time to search the video in her browser history, and indeed, Rebecca was right. The man is the spitting portrait of the one called the “time traveler”. She watches the video with probably much more interest than the first time, desperate to understand why he is haunting her nights. That's clearly the least credible story she has ever heard: a man, the same man, captured in pictures at different places and at different periods of time. A guy talented with photoshop could perfectly create this whole theory. She sighs, closing her laptop and just comes to the conclusion that her brain registered the man's face when she watched the video with Rebecca and simply has a fixation on it since.
Curious to know the origins of the other faces she can see in her dreams, she draws them as well and she finds herself with three other men. The younger looking is blond with a bowl cut, a long face and an endearing smile. The two others look much more like warriors, one has long hair tied and shaved on the sides, his eyes a piercing blue, the other has different colour eyes and a tattoo covering the side of his neck. Once again, she sends her drawings to Rebecca but this time she has no idea of where she could have seen them.
Days pass, the dreams don't fade but Victoria forgets about her accident and all the strange things that happened, until the police call her. Obviously, her car had to be found as she didn't call anyone to take care of it, she just wanted to forget what happened. She tries to give the best explanation to the police, telling them she's alright and shock made her forget to deal with her broken vehicle. After an hour on the phone they finally let her alone, adding that if she wanted to file a complaint there would probably not be a lot of results. She just replies that she will think of it, when in fact she won't at all.
As things couldn’t get weirder, one afternoon she meets an odd customer at the bookshop she’s been working for years now. She doesn’t notice him particularly, until she feels like he is staring at her behind his sunglasses. She tries to ignore him, but can’t resist staring back. He is wearing a grey sweatshirt, the hood covering his hair, but at the color of his beard she guesses it’s as dark. There’s something familiar to him and decided to understand what his problem with her is, she fully turns to face him.
“Can I help you?”
The man seems to freeze, his hands sinking in the pockets of his trousers. He lowers his head and reads the badge with Victoria’s name on her jacket. He looks back to her and this time she raises an eyebrow, her arms crossing over her chest.
“No that’s alright.” He mutters with an accent she doesn’t get in the moment. “Sorry for botherin’ ya.”
He steps back and leaves the bookshop without another word. She doesn’t move for a moment, frowning and still staring at the shop’s door. She has dealt with a thousand customers in five years of working here, sometimes extremely weird, even more than this one, however it’s him who remains stuck in her head even a few days after his visit.
But the culmination of this month filled by weird events happens a week after the man came to the bookshop. It’s a friday, and as usual, Vicky has her free afternoon and spends it at her flat, watching the last episode of Game of Thrones while drawing. But she’s interrupted by a knock on her door. She frowns, pretty sure she expected no one to come today. The person knocks again and she gets up from her desk chair. She unlocks the door, opens it, and before she can even say “hello”, she gasps in surprise at the sight of the man standing in front of her.
Victoria has no doubts. It’s the man from her dreams or the one theorists call the “time traveler”, standing in the corridor of her floor with a tight, uncomfortable.
A/N : A first chapter full of misteries ahah ! Don’t hesitate to comment, express your ideas regarding what could happen or whatever could happen, I’m really curious to know ahah! See you next week for some answers ;)

Happy new year, my mates wanted a Joe and Dianne fic but I wrote this instead cos 7 years on and I still can’t give up Carolly fic, yipes.
As easy as breathing, carolly rpf
It was strange really, like going back in a time warp. She was good friends with Dee so she saw Dermot more often than she would have otherwise. She had got used to Dermot. But now Gary was here, Gary who she hadn’t seen since Xtra. He hadn’t been there for half of it, he had no idea. And yet here he was, singing in Dee and Dermot’s lounge, women screaming at him, the memories flooding back, and all she could think about was Olly.
Gary finishes up ‘Greatest Day’, beaming around at the assembled audience, always happy to be in front of a crowd, and starts to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ as Dermot wobbles out of the kitchen with a candle loaded cake.
After the singing and the applause dies down to a chatter filled hum, Gary makes his way over to Caroline and bundles her up in a hug. He smells the same and only then does she realise she’s remembered how Gary Barlow smells this entire time. Olly had joked about getting the same aftershave as him to get all the ladies swooning but Caroline had protested, having got used to Olly’s scent and the comfort and allure it brought her.
‘Long time no see Caroline’
‘Indeed it is Captain’
Gary grins at the nickname
‘How have you been?’ he enquires
‘I’ve been fine’ she nods to herself, staring at the ground
‘How have you really been?’ Gary says gently and she wants to start crying there and then, at her friend’s birthday with her childhood crush asking after her. She should be happy.
And yet, she was still recovering from her broken heart. Andrew had burrowed deep, set up camp, made her think it was forever and then he had shattered her into a million pieces. She had thought he was different, she had thought so wrong.
Even without Andrew, there is Olly. Olly, who without contest, remained the love of her life. She had loved Andrew, she knows she had, she still did but it was nothing compared to how she felt for Olly, still did.
And with Gary and Dermot and Dee surrounding her, it was hard to fight against the wave of feelings currently brewing up inside her, the onslaught of memories that she couldn’t escape. They had only just started talking again. They were making tentative steps forward, they wanted to be back to where they were before X Factor.
But what did that even mean? He was still with Francesca before X. She was still in turmoil over Jack. Their lives had been upended during the whole thing and they had fought solace in each other. And then it had all exploded, far too much damage to repair. So they had run, the pair of them. They had ignored each other and acted like it had never happened. But of course it had, if it hadn’t happened, they would still speak, catch up every now and then, tweet each other, follow each other on social media, talk to each other at events. But no, there was none of that, there was nothing for two years, almost three.
It was the letter, she knows that. If she had known before, that writing a not so secret love letter to him in a publication, maybe she would have done it sooner. Hired a skywriter to fly over his Essex manor ‘Being with you was as easy as breathing’. And it had been, so easy. Being around him, sleeping with him, falling into kisses, falling into bed, into oblivion. Everything else felt like walking through fog, through criticism and hate and a world screaming nothing but negativity at them. But then they’d be in bed, just them, just bliss and the rest of it would all fall away.  They stuck their heads in the sand, it felt worth it. It was so good, it was euphoria between cotton sheets, ecstasy beyond anything she had known before.
Of course, all good things had to come to an end. And come to an end they did, gradually, bit by bit before it all exploded. She had thought he had loved her too. She had thought it was forever, he didn’t know how to do forever. They didn’t know how to stop after X, the sex was that good. But after that argument, he had left her house and never come back. And after that, nothing was said at all. The new precedent was set, they weren’t to talk about it and neither of them had any idea how to repair it at all, so they didn’t even try.
The letter had been a white flag calling out to him. ‘Being with you was as easy as breathing’. She wanted it back, she wanted her air back, her lungs and heart to fill to full capacity. And now that Andrew had gone, her hopes had started fluttering again. Could they repair it? Could they try again? Could they make it work this time?
Coming back to reality, Caroline smiles at Gary
‘I’ll be ok, I know I will’
‘Course you will’ he says with affirmation ‘so how’s Olly, seen him lately?’
‘No I haven’t actually, it’s been a while’
‘What happened there? I always thought you two were soulmates, the real thing’ Gary smiles ‘you reminded me of me and Dawn’
Caroline gives him a watery smile back
‘I remember you saying before’
He had, during the very early days of 2011, she knew Gary wanted them together just as everyone else did, he said it often.
‘Stuff happened, life happened’ she takes a breath ‘a lot happened’
Gary reaches over and gives her arm a reassuring squeeze
‘You’ll figure it out, you’re meant to be you two, that always figures itself out’
----
They haven’t properly met up yet. It had mostly been texts and calls. She didn’t know if his reasoning was the same as hers, that they knew what would happen if they ended up alone together again. She didn’t really see how that could be a bad thing.
Beyond that, they both knew whatever they wanted to say would be harder face to face, they hadn’t properly discussed any of it yet. What happened during X, what happened after X. How being with him was as easy as breathing. ‘Hope you don’t mind that I admitted to being in love with you in Cosmo’
She calls him in the taxi home from Dee’s
‘Hey Caz’
‘Hey Ols’
Even that made her heart glow. Caz and Ols, how they’d been from the start.
‘Everything alright? I thought you were at Dee’s birthday?’
‘Yeah I was, I’m heading home now’ she pauses, summoning up the bravery she needs ‘so are you free soon? To like meet up?’
‘Anything for you Caz’
She inhales some courage
‘Are you free tomorrow?’
----
She spends the afternoon hoovering. She isn’t really sure why, she has a thought in the back of her mind that they can’t have sex on a dirty floor. They’d had to deal with a few carpet burns during X and that was from the Hilton which had perfectly luxurious carpet. She didn’t think they had any chance on her wooden floors and assorted rugs.
She had left Ruby with Jo, she didn’t need disruptions for this, her nerves could barely handle it as it was. They had to talk, had to really talk and the thought alone of that terrified her.
‘So, you know you broke my heart right? Utterly beyond repair. And I ended up with some dickhead instead of you. Who also broke my heart. But now I want you back because my god I miss you, I miss the sex, I miss it all being as easy as breathing. So don’t break my heart again ok?’
The doorbell rings.
---
She can feel her heart jump out of her chest the moment she opens the door. He is starting there looking at the ground, scuffing his shoes, a sheepish look on his face. He turns to face her as the door opens and she can’t quite read his expression.
‘Hey Ols’ she smiles shyly, acting far calmer than she feels ‘come on in’
‘Y’alright Caz?’ he smiles at her, follows her in and closes the door ‘nice place you have here’
‘Thanks’ she twists her hands between her, staring at his shoes, unable to meet his eye ‘you’ve not been here have you? I forgot’
‘No, no I haven’t, you moved after we…’ he trails off, swinging his arms like a pair of pendulums at his side, an awkward and heavy silence descending
‘After we had that raging fight at my old place after having sex for the last time and then you left and we didn’t speak for two years’ she wants to say. She can’t.
She clears her throat, her heart thudding and she offers tea, unable to think of anything else to do in this uncomfortable situation of her own making.
They sit on her sofa and hold their mugs in their hands, a warm comfort to ward off the bad feelings hanging over them.
After a few sips, Olly puts his down on her coffee table and turns to face her, she meets his eye this time, feeling the air charge
‘It was my fault, you know, why we fell out, I’ve always felt guilty about it’
She wants to be petty and question what he has to be guilty for, what exactly, the minute details. The argument of how he didn’t want a relationship, not turning up at the NTAs, how she got blasted in the press for being fired whereas he ‘left’, how he made her fall completely in love with him and then broke her heart, how he took away her air.
‘I saw Gary the other day you know’ she says and he looks confused at the abrupt change of topic
‘Barlow?’
‘Yes Barlow, he was singing at Dee’s birthday, it felt like 2011 all over again’
‘During Xtra, back when it was easy’
‘It wasn’t that easy Ols, god knows we had enough drama in 2011. We used to fight all the time’
‘It was the all the sexual tension’ he says with an inflection of joking but they both know it is true
‘Well it was, we never acted on it, all that tension flying around had to go somewhere. So we fought and we became best friends’ she lets out a sad sigh ‘we really were, you know, especially back in 2015. Even when everything was going on…’
‘When we were screwing each other senseless you mean?’
Caroline rolls her eyes at him
‘Yes that but I mean everything else, we went through such shit during X and you were the only one who really truly understood what it was like. Even without the sex, you were my best friend during those crazy months’
‘Caz…’
‘Don’t Ols, you always used to do that too, say Caz all soft and sad’
It had been like that the first time. They had been drinking at the Hilton, it was late and everyone else had gone to bed. He had broken up with Francesca only a couple of weeks previous. He looked at her, whispered her name, staring through her like he could see her soul. He had been so close and she couldn’t remember who had leaned forward but they were kissing and it felt like coming up for air.
They had gone to her room and after four years of waiting, they couldn’t get naked fast enough. They might as well as been shouting ‘finally’ along with their moans of pleasure. They had more than made up for the long wait that night. And so many times after.
Caroline didn’t even love the sex the most. It was the little things, the stolen kisses in dressing rooms, the waking up beside him, the constant text messages and phone calls, having coffee together during rehearsals, hugging him close at the end of each weekend, one more week checked off.
She had known she loved him near the start of X Factor but she didn’t fully realise it until they were together, in all the ways, all the time. Kissing him, sleeping with him, talking to him constantly, collectively it wound her heart up in such knots until she could barely handle it.
And then after X, when they really should have stopped. She kept telling herself, her heart kept tugging at him, that it would work out. That a couple of drunken snogs with random girls meant nothing. That and the times they kept hooking up, but never going on actual dates should have set alarm bells ringing, alas.
She had been so mad after his no show at the NTAs as well, she had gone to his and they had argued but they ended up just having mind blowing make up sex.
It had been mid March, at hers. He was in town for work and asked if he could pop by after. She wasn’t busy and she knew what it was for so she’d said yes. But after he had got up to go home and she couldn’t take it anymore. She wanted answers, she wanted more than just casual hook ups with the love of her life.
And he had given her answers, answers she soon realised she didn’t want at all. He didn’t want this, a relationship, more press invasion, commitment. He wanted fun and sex and he wanted her. But her tangled heart couldn’t fathom having only a part of him. She wanted it all, he wanted a part. There was no compromise, and the fallout had been catastrophic.
He had stormed out, they deleted each other off all the social media and communication ceased. Caroline felt like a part of her heart had been scooped out, a cold hole right in the centre of her that she couldn’t rid of, her air stolen from her. He had left one of his jumpers at hers and she had slept in it for weeks after. She lost count of how many times she picked up the phone to call him, or text him, or to stalk him on all the social media she had unfollowed him on.
Time was a healer they said, she moved on, she told herself she was over him, and the pain did lessen as the months and years went by. But it never truly went away. And now sitting here, on her sofa with Olly, making her angry and sad and filled with love as he says her name softly, her emotions churn and curdle within her, firing in every direction. She puts her tea down, takes a giant breath and slides into his lap. His arms come around her, like a jigsaw fitting into place. He smells exactly the same.
She leans back to look at him and she doesn’t know who leans in, but they are kissing. Kissing like they haven’t kissed since the very first time. She wants him so badly, she feels like she could crawl right into his skin, nothing is close enough. Being with him is as easy as breathing.
She hears something fall over as he chucks his shirt across the room, she doesn’t care. She flings her bra in the same direction, as he kisses here and she scrunches into him, gripping his hair with all her might. She undoes the button and fly on his jeans before her own and realises they will have to part to get out of their trousers. Such a dilemma, to move apart to be closer together.
She reluctantly rises off him and he hops up beside her to drag down his own too tight jeans. Sans trousers and pants, Olly kneels before her and thumbs her underwear down, his mouth at her navel.
‘God I’ve missed this’ he says softly as he kisses there
He grabs behind her knees, pulling her towards the floor, and as she hits the floor with a slight thud it flits across her mind that she is glad she hoovered.
‘Are you still on-?’
‘Yeah, yeah’
He is still between her legs, kissing the inside of her thighs but for once, she is too impatient.
‘Come here’ she beckons and he puts his arms either side of her, hovering above her as she kisses him, her arms around his neck, her hands bundled in his hair, her heart exploding with love for him.
He moves within her, his face burying into and kissing her neck, and it feels like the future and the past all at once.
Caroline wraps her legs around his back and they twist and turn as she ends up above him
‘My favourite view’ he smirks as she laughs with ecstasy and joy
They convene upstairs afterwards, a replay all over again of the first time, making up for lost moments, lost could have been memories. Only in the late evening after they’ve eaten and crawled back into bed, do they properly talk again. She lies on his chest, his fingers playing on her back, the other arm stretched behind his head. It felt easier like this, like the way it was before, rather than stifled and fully clothed conversations on her couch.
‘You broke my heart you know’
‘Yeah, I’m sorry, I do know that’ he sighs and kisses her head
‘It was just so much Caz. And I handled it completely wrong, I know I did. But as much as I wanted to be with you, I didn’t know how. I had just ended the most serious relationship of my life and then within no time at all, you and me were fucking, all while X Factor was going on. By the end, it felt like we’d been on a rollercoaster and when we got off, I was so dizzy I could barely get my thoughts straight. All I knew was that I couldn’t do it. All of it. You wanting marriage and babies when my mind was in turmoil was too much to handle. So I fucked it up, I didn’t know what else to do’
Caroline feels her mind clear a fraction, muddled up things finally starting to make sense. They were both broken after X Factor, Caroline wanted to move on, move on with him. Olly didn’t know how.
‘When did you figure all this out Ols?’
‘In therapy’
‘Was it good, did it help?’
‘It did, yeah. It makes you realise things that sometimes are staring you right in the face but your mind is just too messed up to see. It puts things in order a bit’
‘Yeah I get that, it helps.’
‘And of course I wanted to make things right with you. But I didn’t know how. We hadn’t spoken in such a long time. And then you were with Andrew. But then that letter’ he sighs ‘it made me realise that you still loved me’
‘So you messaged me’
‘So I messaged you’
‘We broke up that day you know, I mean we broke up a lot of times, I was so stupid, it was all so stupid, but he knew I still loved you. He saw my face when I got that text. He felt like second choice and Andrew never liked being second’
‘Don’t I know it’ Olly laughs
‘Oh shush’ she pokes him in the ribs ‘you came second on a talent show once, you’ve had plenty of number ones since to make up for it’ she pauses ‘you’re the love of my life, first forever and always’
She looks up to him and he kisses her, a soft smooch, the kind you’d have in the morning before you’d depart for the day. An ‘I’ll see you later’ kiss, not the all consuming ferocious kind they had leading to sex.
‘You’re the love of my life too Caz, forever and always’ he smiles, kisses her again ‘so what do you reckon? Do you think we can make this work?’
‘What do you think? Do you think we can make this work? The way we should have back then?’
‘Yeah Caz, I think we can’
‘We’re going to have to talk, properly, do this thing right’
‘Caz, darling, we can talk as much as you like, whatever you need, I’m your man’
‘Yes’ she grins ‘yes you are’
Caroline takes a breath, her lungs full of air, her heart happy. As easy as breathing.

15-28 June 2020
It’s been a busy two weeks. Ann, Kitty and Chipette drove to France and Ann and Chipette will be staying until autumn. Kitty will be back for work in early July. The night they left I also had the absolute most excruciating bout of food poisoning of my life. I wanted to die. It was a bean salad I was finishing off after eating it twice earlier in the week, and it tasted perfect; however, by the time I finished washing the dishes, the pain started and only worsened over the next eight hours until I was able to vomit it all up and start to feel better. It wiped me out Friday, when, thankfully, I was working from home. I also worked that weekend, 20/21 June, which meant I had a short working week and a four-day birthday weekend! Saturday night I went to see Maarten, Mark and Mike in Kingston for dinner, the first meal I’d eaten since Thursday night, and it was delicious.
We’re making good headway in the garden and things are being brought back into order. I finally had my week in the glasshouses with Jess. I worked all week in the tropical corridor. I did a lot of planting, pruning, and pest eradication (mostly mealy bugs and aphids). We’ve been enjoying perfect summer weather too.
This week, I spent Monday and Tuesday cutting hedges which resulted in my back screaming and threatening to cramp. I cut the Elaeagnus × submacrophylla hedge with electric hedge cutters. It was the 400mm high Buxus sempervirens hedges that I cut back with sheers that hurt my back.

Thursday night I went to Elizabeth and Rob’s and we had a very nice evening which of course included some time in the jacuzzi. Dinner was duck with a sauce of grilled cherries and nectarines - delicious. I was still there at midnight so my first birthday toast! Friday evening I headed to Denis and André’s and we ate a succulent pot-roasted chicken and enjoyed a bottle of Jacquesson, my favourite Champagne. I blew out the candles with a hair-drier in light of the current precautions not to blow on food.
Tumblr media
Saturday I made my way across London to visit Alexander and Stefan for our first catch up this year. Alexander made a delicious fish pie, one of my favourite meals. Sunday Susie and Louis came over and we enjoyed Negroni fizz and a leisurely afternoon of eating and drinking. Susie made one of her infamous risottos and a roast chicken. She also made Negroni cupcakes!

I’m very excited because I also received my invitation to Bruno et Stéphane’s wedding in December. I’m going to be Stéphane’s witness. I almost died laughing when I saw the photo...

Captain Britain Joining The MCU. Give Me Fucking Strength - Quill’s Scribbles
You know there are some points in my life where a person or a movie studio does something so stupid and moronic that my only response is... what the fuck are you doing?
Tumblr media
DC, what the fuck are you doing?
Tumblr media
Marvel, what the fuck are you doing?
Tumblr media
Kevin Feige... what the fuck are you doing?!
Yes, apparently Marvel Studios are considering putting Captain Britain into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Something I’m sure every comic book fan in the land has been crying out for. Now I’m sure you’re wondering what I, a British person, may think of this. Do I feel patriotic? Proud that such a ‘beloved’ British icon is going to be part of the MCU?
youtube
Yeah, I can’t say I’m excited about the prospect and the reason is because... um... how do I put this?... Captain Britain is quite possibly the dumbest thing to ever come out of Marvel (and I’m including Howard The Duck).
Captain Britain was created by Chris Claremont and Herb Trimpe to be the British equivalent of Captain America. But whereas Captain America took off and became a relatively integral part of the American comics industry, Captain Britain never had quite the same impact with us Brits. In fact in contrast with Captain America, he’s actually a very obscure character. While he does have his fans (very few fans), most people have either never heard of him or, like me, can’t stand the fucking sight of him, finding the character to be more patronising than patriotic.
There’s a number of reasons why Captain Britain never took off, but first let’s quickly sum up his backstory. Brian Braddock (smirk) was born into an aristocratic family in Essex and educated at Fettes College In Edinburgh. Because his family were no longer rich enough to fraternise with their academic peers, Brian was a quiet and lonely child because he was too proud to fraternise with the lower classes (and I’m sure we in the lower classes were eternally grateful for that, you stuck up git). After his parents, Sir James and Lady Elizabeth (oh I do beg your pardon) die in a laboratory accident, Brian gets a job at a nuclear facility at Darkmoor. When this facility is attacked by a terrorist, Brian gets on his motorcycle (a motorcycle? Oh come now! Surely that’s far too lower class for him. Shouldn’t he be riding a horse and cart? Pip, pip! Tally ho chaps! We’ll give the ruffians what for!) and goes looking for help only to then crash and get seriously injured (you had one job! That’s you off the Queen’s Christmas card list). He is then saved by Merlyn (yes, that Merlin) and is offered the chance to become Captain Britain. He’s asked to choose between the Amulet of Right (pffft) and the Sword of Might (tee hee). Brian chooses the amulet and he transforms into the champion of Great Britain, fighting for Queen and country and all that is pre-shrunk and cottony... Oh no, wait. That’s from Captain Underpants. Have you ever read Captain Underpants? It’s a brilliant series of books. Very funny. Did you know that DreamWorks are doing a movie adaptation? I’m very excited! :D
Now you may have noticed that I wasn’t really taking this seriously. And really, how could I? It sounds more like a parody of Captain America. But no. Apparently we’re supposed to be taking this very seriously. So come on. Let’s be serious about this for a moment. No! Stop sniggering! Control yourselves, please! This could very well be the next big thing in the MCU.
Tumblr media
As I said, there are many reasons why Captain Britain never really took off. The most glaring example being how stereotypical it is. He comes from an aristocratic family. He went to a boarding school. It’s incredibly painful. He’s one step away from spending Sunday afternoons playing croquet in the grounds and sipping tea in the gazebo before retiring to his four poster bedroom where his butler will give him a glass of port as a nightcap and remind him to get up early in the morning so he won’t be late for a spot of fox hunting with the chaps from Grantham House. I mean Jesus Christ!
Another big reason why Captain Britain doesn’t work is because we don’t really have the same relationship to our flag and our country as the Americans do. Oh sure we can be patriotic on occasion, such as on remembrance days or royal events, but America takes it to a whole other level. Americans love their country. They love their flag. They’re proud to be Americans. To the point where they even have laws dictating how you should take care of your flag. You can actually get punished for not cleaning your flag properly. In some states it’s illegal to wash your flag in a washing machine because it’s disrespectful. That’s insane! Like... it’s just a piece of cloth! Calm down! Brits, generally speaking, don’t have that kind of relationship. In fact kind of the opposite. We often mock our country and view it with a certain amount of disdain. The only people who feel truly patriotic about Britain are the royalists and other such nutters. People who passionately believe that Britain is the best country in the world, who love the Royal family and harken back to the UK’s glorious yesteryears (which never actually existed). While both Captain America and Captain Britain are both equally dumb ideas, I can see why Americans would be drawn to Captain America. An American patriot who stands for American ideals and wears the American flag across his chest with pride. Captain Britain on the other hand, with his Union Jack and his Amulet of Right, is more likely to produce snorts of laughter from us Brits.
But I’ll say one thing for Captain America. It may be a stupid idea and he may talk as though he has the Declaration of Independence shoved firmly up his arse, but at least he doesn’t act all high and mighty or try to lord it over everyone else. No. He fights for the common man and that’s largely because he was a common man himself. A wimpy kid off the streets of Brooklyn determined to become a soldier and fight the Nazis, wanting to protect his country from injustice. His inner strength, good will and patriotism is what made him a prime candidate for the Vita-Ray experiment and he represents an aspirational figure that kids can look up to. Captain Britain is precisely not that. In fact he represents what the majority of Brits actually hate. An overly privileged, upper class prick who has great power bestowed onto him despite the fact that he’s done very little to actually deserve it.
And that’s by far the biggest problem with Captain Britain. As a character, he just doesn’t appeal to us Brits. He’s above us and he sees himself as above us. We don’t want to see that. If we wanted to see that, we’d just watch BBC Parliament. Let me give you an idea of the kind of characters we in the UK love:
Tumblr media
Derek Trotter, more commonly known as Del Boy, was the main protagonist of the hugely successful sitcom Only Fools & Horses and is arguably one of the most beloved characters in British culture today. A market trader and con man who sells hooky gear on the streets of Peckham and often gets into trouble due to his get rich quick schemes.
Tumblr media
Dave Lister, a vending machine repair man from the sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf. This lager drinking, curry loving slob ends up becoming the last surviving member of the human race and a Godlike figure to a new race of people that evolved from his pet cat. As the series progressed, he helped his robot Kryten break his programming and become fully independent, and it’s this that helps him to grow and mature to become the space hero he is now in the current series.
Tumblr media
Victor Meldrew, from the sitcom One Foot In The Grave. A middle aged man forced into early retirement and having to find ways to pass the time, be it through peculiar hobbies or shouting at the weird events happening around him, much to the dismay of his wife Margaret.
Tumblr media
Basil Fawlty, from the beloved sitcom Fawlty Towers, has become one of the most iconic characters in British culture. A traditionalist, right wing hotelier desperately seeking to raise his social status and to become successful, but is forced to work with people he absolutely despises, including his incompetent Spanish waiter Manuel.
Tumblr media
Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced Bouquet) is the main character of the sitcom Keeping Up Appearances. Housewife to her eternally suffering husband Richard, she’s a pompous snob desperately seeking to maintain the illusion that she’s wealthier and more socially important than she actually is. However her attempts to climb the social ladder are often ruined by her working class sisters or her senile father.
And finally, just to bring this back into the realm of comic books there’s:
Tumblr media
John Constantine. The chain smoking, working class magician from Liverpool who fights dark supernatural forces on a regular basis and frequently has to make morally dubious choices, often resulting in the deaths of his friends and loved ones.
Now what do all of these characters have in common? They’re all underdogs. Working class. Losers. Idiots. Failures. Those are the types of characters we’re drawn to as a culture. The reason why I included so many sitcom characters is because I feel they perfectly demonstrate the difference between British and American culture. America is brimming with idealism and aspiration. The idea that anyone can become greater than their humble origins, and this is reflected in their culture. In most American movies and TV shows and comic books, the main character is often smarter, wittier, tougher and/or funnier than the audience, representing someone they can aspire to be like. Here in Britain, where our rigid class system is permanently ingrained into us at an early age, we mostly accept the fact we’re likely going to stay where we’re at for the rest of our lives and so our media reflects that by giving us characters that are in similar situations to us. The reason we identify with the likes of Constantine and Lister and Del Boy is because they operate on our level and share our problems and worries. They’re one of us. When Basil Fawlty and Hyacinth Bucket arrogantly disregard their working class roots and try to raise their social status, it’s funny when they fail because serve them right for looking down on us. But when Del Boy eventually becomes a millionaire at the end, we’re legitimately happy for him because we like the character, we want to see him succeed and we’re glad he managed to succeed without compromising who he is. And that’s why Captain Britain will never be accepted by us. He is above us and has power over us and we don’t like that. People with power and authority are to be mocked and shamed, not to be celebrated or aspired to be like.
The idea that Kevin Feige is even considering putting Captain Britain into the MCU for me proves what I’ve been saying about Marvel all along. That they don’t care about creating a coherent or entertaining universe, that they’re adding characters and storylines just for the sake of adding characters and storylines, and that Kevin Feige clearly doesn’t have the slightest fucking idea of what he’s doing. If he did, he honestly wouldn’t think Captain Britain would be a profitable or worthwhile project to pursue. I also feel extremely annoyed by all of this. Remember when Feige said we were definitely going to see an LGBT+ superhero appear in the MCU at some point in the next ten years? Or just recently when he said we were totes going to see Miles Morales’ Spider-Man show up in the MCU at some point in the future? All of these vague half-promises constantly pushed back to make way for more ‘important’ projects like an Ant-Man sequel, an Inhumans TV series or Captain fucking Britain.
Regardless of what your thoughts are on the state of the MCU right now, I think we can all agree that when you get to the stage when you’re seriously considering Captain Britain as a legitimately good idea... maybe it’s time to take a break and reevaluate just what the fuck it is you’re actually doing.

Felicity Cloake: my week as a vegan
Can a meat writer subsist on dairy-free mylk, substitute sausages and tofu cheese? We asked our correspondent to save a journal of her meat-free week, from the high-priceds( vegan pizza) to the lows( a vegan barbecue)
Tumblr media
When I say Im omnivorous, I intend Im the various kinds of person who once snacked an eyeball for a dare. The riling vacation attendant who wants to try the crispy silkworms in a Vietnamese sell, and that sucker who will paying off sizable augment for a plateful of smelly cheese. But even I cant ignore the mounting evidence that most of us need to cut down our meat uptake if the world is to avoid environmental disaster research published in March suggests that widespread adoption of a vegan nutrition could cut world food-related emissions by about 70%.

And, although veganism has certainly improved its persona in the last couple of years, it is still a largely unknown quantity so when my editor asks me to cut out swine commodities for a few weeks, I virtually bite her hand off. Im interested to find out how Ill cope, particularly without my daily dose of dairy. Will I feel better without butter? Will my surface incandescence like a ripe apricot? Will the dog still desire me after seven days of meat-free leftovers?
Sunday
Mylk taste test. Photo: Felicity Cloake for the Guardian
Fresh off the plane from Tipperary, Ireland, my blood 80% full-cream milk, I kick off vegan week with a range, while Ive still got the forte.( On the way, I listen to a podcast about super-successful ultramarathon runners who thrive on a nutrition of bean burritos. Returns out Ill be fine .) Back home, I make a bowl of coffee and inspection my sparkling display of mylks. Almond milk and coffee seems a joyous smell compounding, but I return to my beaker after smoothing off avocado on toast and find it no longer resembles anything I want to made near my mouth. This turns out to be one of the most severe various aspects of veganism: relearning how to attain respectable coffee( and, even harder, tea ). On a side-by-side measure of coconut, brown rice, hemp, soy, almond and two different types of oat milk, the last, with its similar fat material to semi-skimmed kine milk and somewhat neutral smell, testifies the best alternative, with hemp a surprising runner-up. But I suppose, like all things related to the perfect cuppa, this is a very personal advantage, so experiment and if its prone to curdling( Im looking at you, soya ), heat it gently before contributing slowly.

Im genuinely looking forward to pigging out on south Indian curries and Middle Eastern veggies for the week, but it seems fair to give the vegan makes on the market a whirl as well, given that in the real world, few of us have time to concoct every single dinner from scratch. There is no shame in to purchase a sausage, whether it is made from flesh or wheat, such as the Swiss vegan banger laced with red pepper I cook for dinner with olive-oil mash and peas. After working out rather too late that the glistening casing isnt edible, I am pleased to find the inside is. It savor well, it savor like something from my childhood I cant put my finger on, but which, though not distasteful, certainly isnt a sausage. At least I dont have to worry about how it has been treated, though, and I can always smother it with mustard.

I head out with sidekicks for a bank holiday tread and take an emergency packet of almonds, in case Im unable to find anything to eat in rural Essex. This supports a comfort when someone causes homemade flapjacks, though the dog elections with its paws and shun me for the rest of the afternoon. Come lunchtime, the smell of charred meat from the pub barbecue prepares my mouth ocean, unlike my lamentable cooked potato with beans( oh, for cheese or butter ). My friend Ian, countenancing beside me at the bar as I quiz the staff, is puzzled by my embarrassment. I was brought up not to make a fuss requesting busy barmen to check whether their beer is stabilised exploiting egg whites or milk proteins is surely the working definition of this. Thank God a speedy internet search on someones telephone exposes I can booze the cider, which is a succor, because I sure as hell cant have any pudding.

I go home, make a big jackpot of luscious peanut and dill dal and a inventive take on sag paneer with tofu cheese from Jackie Kearneys superb Vegan Street Food book, and breath the lot.
Tuesday

Back to work and the early-morning pup step, today with the added bonus of a bowl of curdled coffee. You miss more soya milk? the barista enquires , find my look. Her second struggle is better, but it still feelings bitter. I dont typically take sugar in my coffee, but this trash needs all the help it can get. Lunch concerns more make researching today, vegan charcuterie and cheese. Though Im curious to find out what these replaces delicacy like, ironically, I find Im ingesting less fresh fruits and veg this week than ordinary frequently Id have a salad , not a part of heavily seasoned wheat gluten. If I moved vegan long-term, Id establish the majority of members of my nutrient from scratch, rather than relying on these highly processed replacements, many of which taste worryingly salty. It is a reminder that vegan doesnt ever intend healthy.
Funky, unfiltered vegan wine-colored. Photograph: Felicity Cloake for the Guardian
Tonight Ive been invited to dinner and the hosts are large-scale natural wine-coloured followers, so Im delighted to get a bottle of funky, unfiltered fizz to myself. Emma has really gone to city on the menu very, gratifying for me by cooking a deeply savoury ramen with three types of miso, and homemade coconut ice-cream. Tip of the day: if youre considering becoming vegan, elect your friends carefully.
Wednesday
Scrambled tofu on toast. Photograph: Felicity Cloake for the Guardian
People are genuinely interested in the challenge. Last nights crowd were particularly concerned about my protein intake something I dont frequently hold much expect. Perturbed I might waste away, I swap my usual breakfast fruit and yoghurt for clambered silken tofu( not bad at all when you add tomatoes and herbs) and toast. Dry toast because, although vegan spreads are widely available, I was scarred by margarine as small children, so I attempt my own coconut butter and fail miserably.
Vegan cauliflower-based pizza. Photo: Felicity Cloake for the Guardian
Ive got appointments in city today a good excuse to treat myself to lunch out. One thing Im speedily learning about being vegan is that it pays to plan ahead. This being London, a speedy pursuit reveals a vegan-friendly cafe only round the area, where I eat something claiming to be a pizza with a cauliflower basi. Although it doesnt prompt me much of a pizza, its pretty delectable( but so heavy I can just speak in either meeting ). Afterwards, I foreman to a vegan ice-cream joint in Soho where I can make a pig of myself in the name of research. I gobble so much of Yoricas refreshingly light coconut and rice-based soft help that I dont need dinner. It strikes me that Im unlikely to lose much heavines on this regiman at the least until I get a handle on sensible parcel control for these new foodstuffs.

Thursday
I pop into the neighbourhood vegan patronize( naturally, there is a vegan shop within mung-bean-spitting distance of the Guardian) and a fellow client recommends the powdered eggs, made from nutrient-dense microalgae. They surely ogle the proportion, clowning several people on social media, and even have a certain, somewhat off-putting, sulphurous smell, but they savor of absolutely nothing better for an omelette, perhaps, than plain clambering. Ill attracts a veil over the maple-smoke bacon that accompanies them at breakfast, except to say that its edible, but there its similarity to bacon ends.
Homemade vegan pizza. Photograph: Felicity Cloake for the Guardian
Later, I have friends round for my own vegan pizza. It is better than I expect, given that all vegan salami seems to flavor primarily of celery seeds and salt, and most of the cheese has challenging top greenbacks of newborn puking. That said, they do melt well, demonstrating the pizzas a satisfyingly familiar look and a bland creaminess that offsets the wealth of my homemade tomato sauce delicately. Not everyone is so impressed, though: the fact one of them travels for a curry on the way residence hints I may be going native.
Friday
Oat milk porridge. Photograph: Felicity Cloake for the Guardian
Discovery of the day: oat milk realise utterly ravishing porridge.( Duh .) I go for Campari spritzes with a acquaintance after make and we substance our faces with olives, hummus and other vegan-friendly bounty from the Turkish grocers round the reces. I decide to presume a hurriedly acquired bottle of prosecco is vegan-friendly. Knowledge, though no defence, is emphatically bliss on a sunny evening.

Saturday
A morning market trip virtually stimulates a descent at the last impediment, as we happen upon “the worlds largest” delicious-looking doughnuts Ive ever seen, right next to a man casually grilling cheese sandwiches with insufficient involve for my vegan nostrils. Person offers me a test of wine-coloured, and Im so grateful its vegan that I buy an entire carton. This evenings dinner with sidekicks revives my hearts: a veritable Ottolenghi feast, followed by a Campari and orange sorbet. For the second time in 2 day, I thank God the vivid crimson Italian aperitif is no longer coloured with beetle extract.

Sunday
My editor rings before Ive had time to buy any semi-skimmed in fete at the end: she has got a final few vegan produces to experiment, and recommends a barbecue on her ship. Still high on last nights dinner, I agree only to find myself ruminating miserably on a light-green spelt and hazelnut cutlet while other clients abandon their bean burgers along with their flimsy principles and grab chorizo rotations instead. When a seagull swoops down and snatches a duckling from the water next to us, I cant help learning it as a signaling. Its a dog-eat-dog nature and Im emphatically no duckling.

The aftermath
The challenge hasnt been as hard-handed as Id horror; I anticipate I could go a good few weeks, if perhaps not a lifetime, cooking vegan without missing animal produces. I experienced just fine neither feeble nor positively glowing with health. Perhaps most astonishingly, a week later, Im still dining a largely vegan diet at home. But, Im sorry Ive gone back to a proper cuppa. Some things are just very sacred to mess with.

Top tips
1 Think onward if youre ingesting out do your research( most targets have menus online these days) and always parcel snacks, just in case.
2 You can find a inventory of vegan-friendly concoctions on most supermarket websites( and if you dont have time to check ahead, the Co-op is especially good at vegan labelling, particularly for own-brand wine .)
3 Dont assume that something is healthy simply because its vegan; check the label, as with any other food.

4 Make sure youre not just eating carbs, fruit and veg; you need fat and protein, very. Nuts and lubricants are a good root of the former, while the top vegan-friendly proteins are seitan mock-meat, made from wheat gluten, tofu and tempeh.
5 Dont find you can only gobbles special vegan foods or concoct from vegan-specific volumes, although there are some good ones out there, such as Kirsten Rodgers V is for Vegan, Aine Carlins The New Vegan and Marie Laforts Vegan Bible. I still have lots of recipes Im dying to try from popular mainstream volumes, too: Italian, Middle Eastern and Indian ones should all have a good selection.

Joe Clarke outshines Joe Root with unbeaten century in front of England selector James Taylor
Joe Clarke shines over Joe Root with undefeated century for England selector James Taylor on opening day of County Championship
[194590109] Published: 21:30 BST, April 5, 2019 | It is inevitable that some of the two thousand and one thousand who gathered at Trent Bridge for the opening day of the Trent Bridge Friday's County Championship season had braved the cold to see a number four that Joe Bat was baptized.
The privilege of Yorkshire to invite Nottinghamshire to hit meant that the involvement of Joe & # 39; s captain was limited to multiple spells from his off-spin, however, making Joe Clarke central to England selector James Taylor.
Clarke, who could be called another witness in the new trial of his former Worcestershire team mate and close friend Alex Hepburn over two charges of rape when they appear at the Crown Court next Monday, sets off field diversion to one side with the first hundred of the competition – an unbeaten 109 in a total of 324 for five.

Joe Clarke is an undefeated century on the opening day of the County Championship, the 22-year-old stopping New Road for a new challenge last September and excelling in the debut at a time when Ashes places are far too messy , and successfully achieving his 14th three-digit score in first-class cricket,
There was a time when the beginning of the championship season was a picturesque side issue before the big things started, but the eternal battle of top order England I have given this a very different feeling.
Clarke is not a bat in the problem top three po sities, but the weight of runs at a bowler-friendly time of the year will be a big explanation and he was on the periphery of test selection during recent years in Worcestershire.
There was some of Root's elegance about his battles here, especially after the departure of Ben Slater – the other batter from Nottinghamshire to pass 50 – into a trademark of Duanne Olivier.

Because he had failed to open his account in his first morning of three-year-olds, he had great hope for the honor of England, the South African the fast bowler bounced the left-handed Slater mid-afternoon the way I represented several Pakistan's. opponents in the winter.
Elsewhere in Division One, Sam Northeast hit an unbeaten 94 before bad light prematurely approached the Hampshire home game against the 2017 Essex champions. Olivier, 26, also bit Notts captain Steven Mullaney after tea in a more conventional manner. The James Vince team resumes on Saturday night at 303 for four.
Bowling honor went to Leicestershire Bucket Tom Taylor, who claimed the five-wicket run of the season – a career-best six for 47 Sussex was carried in Hove for 173.
Durham made the perfect start when Chris Rushworth took two wickets from the first three balls of the match in Derby. Derbyshire recovered but fell three points short of a hit.

On Wantage Road, Toby Roland-Jones of Middlesex, who missed the entire summer due to an injury, was one of the wickets that passed the Northamptonshire after being asked to hit
More great news from the recent throwback from England came to form in the return of Haseeb Hameed, after a nasty 2018 season in which I had some figures in Division One.
Batting by number three for Lancashire in a league that has no first-class status due to the fact that Loughborough MCCU has already played two games this season, the 22-year-old hit a double hundred, his highest score for the club's first XI.
* Ross Taylor, the most productive one-day international batsman in the history of New Zealand, has joined the Middlesex season white-ball deal early in which he will play five group games and be available for the semi-finals.

Ecclesbourne Railway: Progress Report Saturday 23rd June 2018
Dear All,
The Ecclesbourne Valley basked in glorious sunshine today and our visitors were out in force. Firstly a group of heritage railway enthusiasts arrived from Bristol. With notebooks and pens to the ready they departed on a very comprehensive yard tour facilitated by Richard. I believe every item of rolling stock/ motive power was suitably photographed and catalogued before they enjoyed a trip to Ravenstor then Shottle for some further stock identification and recording. The second service of the day required our catering team to provide some ad hoc afternoon teas as visitors had seen the carriage laid out ready for a booked service which had stimulated their appetites. Thanks to Helen for organising this at very short notice.
Shortly after departure of the 13.20 Duffield service, a coach party from Essex pulled into the car park. This was scheduled to arrive for the 15.15 return service to Duffield but the driver felt his passengers would enjoy a longer visit to our railway. So a coach load of 40+ descended on the station cafe for refreshments. The team were already busy serving customers and preparing sandwiches for the last train service of a party from Rotary who were joining the train for afternoon tea so one can imagine the challenge the catering team faced. Thankfully, they rose to that challenge and were able to cater for the unexpected rush. My grateful thanks to the catering team who were very busy throughout the day and a special mention to our youngest volunteer, Kyle Tait who prepared and laid the compartment tables for the afternoon tea service. We achieved consistency high passenger numbers on all trains today and it was great to see the stations so busy.
Down the yard over running maintenance on 'Brian Harrison' meant 'Iris' undertook the Ravenstor service. It is hoped that we will be back to steam on the incline for Sunday. There was much banging and clattering coming from the maintenance facility and I will leave it to Tim Oakes to brief you on progress. Between passenger trips on the miniature railway Ron could be found preparing the ground for the next extension to the line and I'm sure he would appreciate any help anyone can offer with this project.
Today's service was supported by the booking office staff, EVRA shop, catering team and miniature railway.
A most enjoyable and commercially rewarding day.
All the best, Tom

Getting to Know – That Amazing Place
This post Getting to Know – That Amazing Place first appeared on The Wedding Community Blog
Venue Name: That Amazing Place
Location: Old Harlow, Essex
What type of venue is That Amazing Place and how old is the building?
That Amazing Place is a beautiful country house that dates back to the 15th Century, but has been beautifully modernised. It’s Essex’s newest premier wedding venue and is ideally suited to couples seeking a blank canvas on which to create their dream wedding.
Tell us a little about the history of this beautiful venue.
Nestled in the Essex countryside, That Amazing Place (also known as ‘Hubbards Hall’) was originally built in the 15th century as a monastery. For many years this grade II listed hidden gem was occupied as a residential property, until its current owners decided to renovate and re-open it as the beautifully elegant venue that it is today. It has been a wedding venue for two years now, hosting 50 to 70 weddings a year on average.
Is That Amazing Place licensed for wedding ceremonies and how many guests can you accommodate?
Yes. That Amazing Place can accommodate 100 guests for civil ceremonies, with the capacity for up to 180 guests for a wedding reception.
Can couples just use the manor house or are there other areas available for weddings?
Outdoor ceremonies can take place under our beautiful gazebo next to the lake and, available in 2018, couples can host their wedding breakfast in our marquee.
Is catering provided for weddings or can couples bring in their own caterers?
Couples can enjoy fantastic food from one of our carefully selected preferred caterers. They can choose a three-course wedding breakfast, including tea, coffee and petit fours. We also have many alternatives such as barbecue, paella, hog roast etc, as well as many different cuisines. You can even select an afternoon tea for a less formal day.
Does That Amazing Place have a set price for weddings or is there a tiered pricing structure? What packages do you offer?
We have two packages, the more traditional ‘Classic Wedding Package’ and a later, less formal ‘Twilight Wedding Package’. The price depends on the month and day of the week required.
Does That Amazing Place have a wedding co-ordinator on site, are they available on the day of the wedding?
Yes, Angie and Hannah. The team at That Amazing Place are here to help you!
Does That Amazing Place have rooms for guest to stay?
Yes, our beautiful Manor House has 12 rooms and accommodates 25 people, and there also are several nearby hotels.
What can a couple expect from having their wedding at That Amazing Place?
A seamless wedding day, run with a personal touch. That Amazing Place will be exclusively yours for the day and night of your wedding. Not only does this give you complete privacy on your special day, your family and friends can also relax and enjoy themselves without the hassle of having to worry about transport.
What is the best thing about having your wedding at That Amazing Place?
Having your nearest and dearest all in one place for the day and night sharing your special day.
Describe That Amazing Place in three words.
Amazing, memorable, stunning.
What’s your top tip for choosing the perfect wedding venue?
When you know, you know, so stop looking.

We’d made a couple of bookings to cover the half-term holidays.  The 1st of these brought us to the village of Tolleshunt D’arcy, just to the east of Maldon, and the D’Arcy Equestrian Camping & Caravanning certificated site. (See my review here).
On Saturday afternoon (the day after we arrived) we headed back to Maldon just to have a little look around. We parked outside of town and walked in along the river.  Once on the main street we found a little café down a side street – if we’d waited we would have found a far nicer (but busier) one a little further on down a quaint little lane.  (Mrs ….. Famous Tea Rooms…. sorry, I should have taken more notice 😦 )
A little further along we came across ‘The Moot Hall’ a narrow building steeped in history, but originally built as a family home in the 15th century.  We were a little too early for the tour, which started at 3.30pm, so we missed out on that one, but the leaflet we were given looked very interesting and the lady manning the hall gave us a fair bit of information.
We then passed the church and found ‘The Blue Boar’ , a 14th Century inn currently undergoing much refurbishment.  We stopped for a quick drink in the public bar.  I asked about ghosts, naturally, and although the barman was clearly a non-believer he told us that apparently there is meant to be a little girl in 1 of the rooms over the bar.  He also told us that once while a local ghost tour guide was doing his spiel outside the pub, the owner’s daughter popped up at one of the windows completely by chance!
On the way home we headed down towards Tollesbury marina, signposted out of the village where we were staying.  It was miles down the road and in the middle of nowhere!  The village we drove through on our way to the marina was much bigger than I was expecting.
This is mudflat country!  With the tide out there were boats standing in numerous channels in the mud; we found it difficult to imagine how they could ever get in or out (notwithstanding that many of the boats were clearly never going anywhere again!)  We found an outdoor pool that was being very well used by the locals, and from here we saw lads racing across the road and through the mud (see the main picture!)  This took Calv back through the years because as a youngster he regularly used to go ‘mud-larking’ in the mud of Portsmouth Harbour 🙂
From here we wandered back towards the old ‘saltings’ that we’d driven past on our way in.  We bought an ice-cream and then found our way onto a path out to the old lightship.  This was a pleasant afternoon out (and we did enjoy watching the lads trying to run across the mud – they were sinking up to their knees at times, but clearly knew what they were doing 🙂 )
Tollesbury mudflats
The pool at Tollesbury
On Sunday we headed towards Mersea Island, firstly to West Mersea and then to East Mersea.  West Mersea was very, very busy and we struggled to park.  We turned round when we came up to road signs telling us that both options were dead-ends and managed to park on the side of the road eventually (in a tiny little spot).
The tide was out when we arrived and we walked over a wooden causeway towards the beach, seeing people crabbing, sitting enjoying the sun and even in the water!  We walked a fair way up the beach, eventually coming up a path into the village, where there were a number of tearooms open.
Making our way back towards the car we saw that the causeway we’d crossed to get to the bridge was now underwater.  However people were still happily walking across it!
When we made it back to the car we found that the water was also lapping at our tyres – we got back just in time it would appear!
We thought that we’d head up towards ‘The Old City’ as we’d seen it on a map on an information board in the town.  However, this too was cut off by the tide!
We then headed towards East Mersea where there is a lovely walk along the estuary.  We’re pretty confident that you could walk, perhaps even cycle, from here back to West Mersea.
On our final day we headed towards Burnham on Crouch, as usual with no idea what to expect!  As it happens this is a lovely waterside town with a good degree of history, and a lovely quayside hosting a good few sailing clubs.  There are several, very well kept, houseboats moored and a lovely big old boat being restored.  There is also, sadly, a rather nice old boat on it’s side.  It looks as though it will probably never float again.
We wandered along the quayside, had some lunch at the Quayside Café/Restaurant, eating it whilst sat outside watching a couple of sailing races.  Calv just had a crab salad and I had a prawn jacket – probably the best lunch we’ve had out since we’ve been away.  The prawns were something special, and the chips were, quite possibly, the best I’ve ever had 🙂

Looking back from the water’s edge at East Mersea
On Bank Holiday Monday we headed the other way to Burnham on Crouch and Bradwell on Sea (to visit St Peters Chapel).  Burnham on Crouch is a delightful waterside town with several sailing clubs and some lovely boats moored.
After a wander along the quay we had a lovely lunch at the Quayside Restaurant watching a couple of sailing races.  This place has a really lovely feel to it as well as our favourite historic buildings!
Leaving Burnham we were headed towards Bradwell on Sea to find St Peters Chapel.  On the way we stopped to have a quick look at the church in Southminster.  Here we could see clearly the meld of ancient and modern, such as the ancient tower and gatehouse and the modern gates (keeping us out…)
Arriving in Bradwell we found out there was more to the little town than the chapel by the sea.  There was a WWII airfield here, which is still evident, and a memorial to the airmen.  Turning by the current church you eventually find parking for the old chapel (still used on occasion), although it is a bit of a walk to visit.  It’s worth it though 🙂
We had had a lovely, and rather unexpected, day out.  The next day we moved out of Essex and into Suffolk 🙂 (And I’m now only 3 days behind!)
A few days near Maldon, Essex We'd made a couple of bookings to cover the half-term holidays.  The 1st of these brought us to the village of Tolleshunt D'arcy, just to the east of Maldon, and the…
