Scholarship/Orphanage Day 2 (7/9) | Jessie Huang (UCI)

Our third day of mission trip was spent going to an all boys orphanage called Long Hoa. I was very excited to go to this orphanage since I heard from 14gers that the kids were very good at soccer. We arrived at the orphanage with boxes of goodies such as toys, backpacks, and stuffed animals to hand out. After handing out the toys, we broke off into small groups and played with the children. Some groups jumped rope, others played with their toys, and my group was very invested in bubbles. We figured out that we could place our hand fans in front of the bubble wand and it will blow air into the wand creating more bubbles. It was very entertaining seeing the kids play with the bubbles while eating Nerds candy. While I couldn’t speak Vietnamese to the kids, I was able to interact with them indirectly and realized they were all bright kids. All the kids were affectionate and appreciative of us spending time with them. After about 30 minutes of indoor playing time, it was now time to bring out the water guns and soccer. One group played with water guns assembled from used water bottles while another group played soccer. You know I had to join the group that played soccer. We couldn’t lose a second year in a row. *long story short* we lost. The kids were so good, we were no competition to them. That being said, we gave it our best especially with Dr. Quach as our MVP in goal. There was one little boy that was a natural at soccer. He was definitely the smallest of the bunch but the mightiest. Overall, we all had a great time either as players or on the sideline cheering for both teams. In the end, we took a group photo and said our goodbyes. The students were all so nice and it was sad leaving but if MEMO comes back next year, we will have a rematch. We then began our drive back to the hotel and got ready for the opening night’s dinner. The welcoming party was lively and that is where we met most of the providers who will be coming with us to clinic days. The night was filled with food, music, karaoke, and more. It was a very successful and rewarding day!

It’s been such a fun week for me!

My brother and I went to the Panic! at the Disco concert on Wednesday (seriously was the best concert I’ve ever been to) and then last night I had a fun karaoke night with some friends and the hubs.

Anyway, that is kind of my reason for not posting this yesterday as I originally intended. 😛 Pretty good reason, right?

I am angry that I am so incapable of helping others. I know I need to get out of that mindset that I need to be there for others, but what can I do?? I can't just stand there and watch my loved ones suffer in pain. I just lost one of my best friends and I had to help fucking BURY her, I had to bury a third friend because I wasn't there for them. She and I were so close. I miss her so much. And I am so full of anger at myself and at the world. I am so angry. I am so full of this negative feeling inside of me and I feel like I'm screaming from the inside-out because of how frustrated I am. And currently a few friends of mine are not in a good place and I CANT FUCKING DO ANYTHING. I feel so helpless. I hate that word because that's one of the worse feelings ever. I know there's stuff going on, and maybe even sometimes I know what that stuff is, but I can't do anything, and everything I try to do doesn't matter because I keep getting pushed away. My loved ones are pushing me away and it hurts so much, not only because I'm being shut out, but because I don't know how to help them. I don't know how to get help for them if I can't help them. I know I need to grow out of that mindset, I really do, but how?? I've been told that I'm too good for my own self, because I prioritize others before myself. It keeps me going, but I know that's unhealthy, and although I want to try to grow out of it, I haven't been able to for years and years on end. It takes time, but I'm not progressing as much as I had hoped. If anything, I seem to be getting worse, and I'm seeking help, I am, but I think it's getting worse because I'm being too hard on myself but it's just so fucking hard. It's been so fucking hard lately. I feel guilty for not being able to be there for my friend and I think it's made that mindset even worse.

Isabelle, wherever you are, I want you to know that I'm so, so sorry I couldn't do more than I had. The Viet community has been so supportive of your family, for the most part, and it's amazing to see everyone helping each other out. I've been going to your house constantly with others to cheer your family up and provide support. Hell I was there past midnight many school nights singing karaoke or talking with your parents. There were some conservative people who looked down on your family because of the suicide, but that was expected since we go to a Vietnamese and Catholic Church. I think the one good thing that came out of your death was that it exposed the more traditional adults to suicide and mental health awareness. It forced them to have to speak about it and learn for themselves what it is and how it affects the entire community. But I wish your death had never happened. YPCO's rehearsals every Monday aren't the same anymore, and we were all crying when our conductor brought in a professional counselor for us. Mass every Sunday won't be the same either. Our tight-knit friend group has been there for each other, and we even sang Hallelujah while surrounding your casket as they put you down in the ground. Do you remember that memory? It was the last song we sang together on the day there was no Sunday school. A few of us snuck into one of the classes that had a badly tuned piano, and we sang and sang while Duong and I played piano, even if the notes sounded so bad from wearing over time. You were the main angel for the Christmas play every year as we grew up, and truthfully, you carried the WHOLE team. You were such a wonderful singer, and violin player, and overall person honestly and I was jealous of that a lot while growing up. Jealous in a friendly competition way though. We had this joke that you were Bunny #1 and I was Bunny #2, and then there was Doan...the naked mole rat. Good times, right? I'm going to miss seeing you Sunday's, saying hi by yelling that nickname...There's so many memories we shared, and I wish so badly that I could have done more. We're not doing very well, but when all your church buddies get together, aka the Asian mafia, we do okay, I believe. Your mom can now say your name without breaking down, and your dad and sister are doing alright too, although I know they're putting up a strong front, especially your dad. And Sean...seeing him cry is really one of the worst things because he's always so smiley. I'm glad Rachel has Sean to watch over her. He's been so helpful to your family, helping out with the memorial and the funeral, as well as keeping things under control. I can tell he's such a good boyfriend to Rachel, I mean come on, 4-5 years together and high school sweethearts? It's adorable. He's part of the Asian mafia now too, even though he's the only white guy haha. But anyways, we're not doing so well, but we're also doing ok, if that makes sense. I miss you so much, and I know nothing I can do will change what already happened, so me, along with the others, will try to move on and take your death as a lesson learned for our Vietnamese community. We're trying to be more progressive with the older adults who are extremely black and white in their beliefs. Believe me, we're trying. I love you so much, Bunny #1, and I promise you, I didn't cope well at first and I made a few mistakes after Ytien told me what happened that night, but I'm trying to get out of that negative outlook and the bad coping mechanisms. It's been nearly 2 weeks since your death, and it's going to be many many more before we're doing better, but we'll get there, so don't worry about us, wherever you are, yeah? I'm not sure why I wrote this, but it feels so much better after I got all this out. I tried not to write about my anger and what had happened too much, and focused on the good things. I know that's what we all need right now. I won't let your legacy stop here. You'll be remembered, in YPCO, at the church, at your school, in my life. I miss my Bunny #1...
